hot take but chara had more in common with asgore while asriel had more in common with toriel. like asgore and chara both hold themselves on a pedestal and will distance their emotional needs in order to do what they think is right while asriel and toriel were more pragmatic.i feel like people try to assign the reverse out of some arbitrary "boy must be like his father and nb people are basically like girls"

I can absolutely see that. You can definitely read a lot of parallels between Asgore and Chara putting extreme burdens on themselves to do something difficult or even reprehensible. I’m not sure if I’d call Toriel and Asriel ‘pragmatic’ per se. If anything, I’d say they’re both very principled. Asriel refused to fight back against the humans, while Toriel refused to take part in the gathering of Souls. They were both committed to the fact that they don’t want to hurt people. And it takes an apathy born of both soullessness and countless time loops to make Asriel abandon that.

By contrast, Chara’s traits that resemble Toriel are mostly limited to mannerisms and speech pattern, (mimicking her use of ‘greetings’ and her not using contractions, for instance). Fairly surface level stuff. Asriel’s a bit more complicated because I think you can see a bit of both in him (in part he cause he has more screentime, kind of). He has his father’s gentle yet jolly demeanour, and his mother’s tough resolve.

Though, I do feel the temptation to compare Asgore to Asriel also partly has to do with them both being the primary antagonists and their storylines ending in much the same way. They both caused a lot of harm, but both accept responsibility for their actions and are trying to do better, in one way or another.

I fear there’s some truth to your thoughts that arbitrary gender assumptions can restrain people’s view of the characters. Especially since even referring to Frisk and Chara as nonbinary still kind of gets push-back in certain sectors which is naturally pretty depressing. Fandoms are pretty big places and sadly you’re gonna find some people who are more regressive.

Regardless, thanks for your ask. That was an interesting point to reflect on.
