Fablehaven Head canons
Yes, it’s short. Literally two head canons. But I’m running out!
-Warrenessa’s first kid would be a boy (Idk why, but I always thought he’d be called Jack, too)
-If Brackendra ever had a kid, it’d be a girl
Brackendra Head canons
-Imagine Kendra being sick one day, and Bracken just popping over to say hi and managing to burn hot chocolate for her, while Kendra becomes a fluffball, cinnamon roll, koala mixture. (btw, don’t hold a koala. They have sharp claws.)
-Bracken meeting Verl and dying from social awkwardness.
-One of Kendra’s LONG debates with Bracken about letting her paint his nails. She normally wins.
-Another long debate about swimming in the naiad lake. Kendra still isn’t brave enough, and she’s stubborn enough to win every single time.
-Kendra trying to dye Bracken’s hair pink as a joke, but his hair doesn’t hold colour and the dye washes straight off onto her hands, which are stained for ages.
-Kendra trying to dance with Bracken, who makes it look effortless, but ends up nearly killing herself trying.
That’s it for today, but I’ll think of more tomorrow- if anyone has any suggestions please message me :)
Bracken and Verl Meeting
Hi everyone! Sadly, I cannot write as well as Bandon Mull, so it will be in my own writing style. If anyone has any ideas on what I should do next, please say so! I love listening to them. This one is a credit to @candlemouse!
Kendra was reading on the porch while Bracken collected sandwiches from Grandma and Vanessa, who had decided that a picnic was non-negotiable. As the tall unicorn came out, struggling to carry a basket filled with food and a stereotypical blanket, she laughed at how flustered he looked.
“I had to listen to the two of them talking about us the entire time!” he complained. “Apparently they forgot unicorns can hear better than humans.”
“But you’re in a human form. Wouldn’t you be the same as one of us?”
“No. I merely appear like a person. It doesn’t mean I am one.”
“Oh. But how does that work then?”
“Powerful magic and illusions, mostly.”
The conversation carried them all the way to outside the Naiad’s lake, and Kendra was relieved to see that Bracken seemed to have forgotten his earlier embarrassment. As the two walked through the entrance, they were greeted by Satyrs running around wildly, shouting as they played a game of tackle tag.
“Kendra!” a voice called. She groaned, frantically trying to tell Bracken to turn around and go back to the house, while he looked down at her, confused.
“But we just got here?”
“Yes, I know, but we should leave now!” she finished speaking just as Verl arrived, and, ignoring Bracken completely, he proceeded to bend down and kiss Kendra’s hand, not noticing how quickly she wiped it on her jeans, or how awkward Bracken looked.
“Ah, my beautiful fair maiden! How glorious it is to see you again! I am afraid that I did not know you were coming today, or I would have brought you another token of my love to you!” By the time the Satyr have finished speaking, Bracken was looking incredibly uncomfortable, and Kendra was trying hard not to die of embarrassment.
“Umm... yeah. Great. Nice to see you too, Verl. Er, we were just... leaving now... so, if you could please excuse us?”
“Oh, but why would you go now? You just got here! Come, I am certain that the others would allow me to leave the game to spend time with a maiden as lovely as you.” Bracken was looking more and more awkward with each word, and as he shifted slightly, Verl seemed to notice him for the first time.
“Oh. Yes. Hello. My name is Verl. Who are you?” The tone of voice dropped by about ten degrees. Bracken, face scarlet with embarrassment, looked about ready to die.
“I’m Bracken. Kendra and I were going on a picnic together.” He seemed to regret the words almost immediately.
“I see.” Another twenty degrees dropped from Verl’s tone.
“Er, yes, come on now Bracken! Um... I think Grandpa wanted us to check on Nero!” Kendra was almost as red as Bracken.
“Yes! Nero! Bye Verl. Nice seeing you?” The two of them rushed away from the pond, leaving before Verl had time to figure out what had happened.
“Sorry about that. Verl doesn’t seem to get the hint that I don’t like him back at all. He even carved me a statue!” Kendra groaned.
“Don’t worry. Before I got captured, this Hamadryad was practically handing off my arm. I was about ready to cut her tree down.” Kendra laughed, and as they walked, the embarrassment seemed to slowly fade away.
Eventually, they ate their sandwiched on top of Nero’s cliff, laughing together, Verl completely forgotten.
Fablehaven Characters as Parents
-Bracken would actually be awesome- that fun dad who’s really chill, plays games with their kids, and everyone just loves
-Kendra would get stressed sometimes, but then Bracken would calm her down. She’s a fairy strict, but fun mum
-Vanessa would be heard screaming from the other side of the preserve, but when she’s not mad, or decking her kids out in armour and weapons, she’d actually be great
-Warren would be the worst by far- “VANESSA! WHAT DO I DO HE’S LOOKING AT MEEEEEEE” but the kids like him anyway
Tess’s Birthday
SET BEFORE DRAGONWATCH
I had this idea randomly, and even though she can’t and I don’t think that it would be a good idea for her, just imagine that Kendra can turn other people into animals. This once. For the story to work. :)
‘Absolutely not.’
‘Please Bracken! Just this once?’
‘No. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. It is embarrassing, humiliating, improper, and there is no way known I will do it!’
Kendra looked up at Bracken pleadingly, pulling the puppy dog eyes card.
‘It’s only for an hour!
‘Whyyyy Kendra? I am an actual Unicorn. Can’t you just tell her that and not have me do something stupid?’ He was being silly, putting it off, and they both knew it. Eventually he caved. ‘Fine.’
Kendra squealed in excitement.
Half an hour later, an extremely grumpy white pony with a sparkly fake unicorn horn was being led to the house to show Grandma and Grandpa. And if Seth, Vanessa, Dale and Warren were there for a conference too, that was just an added bonus.
When they saw Bracken, everyone burst out laughing. Vanessa even took a photo for blackmail, grinning madly as she did. Kendra was doubled over laughing, before she finally turned Bracken back into human form, and everyone piled into the car to go to Tess’s birthday party.
Their younger cousin’s house was decorated with fairy lights, and covered in pink fairy decorations. After Bracken had gotten out of the car, he and Kendra walked around the back, where Kendra turned him back into a pony, redecorated him, and walked over to the birthday girl alone.
‘Kendra!’
‘Hey, Tess! I can’t believe that you’re turning nine already! We have a surprise for you.’ The little girl jumped up and down, holding Kendra’s hands, and followed her to where Bracken was.
The shriek of excitement that followed was ear-shattering.
‘PONY! A UNICORN PONY!’
‘He belongs to one of our... friends. But we asked if we could borrow him for today for you. His name is Bracken.’ Tess rushed over to him, and squeezed his neck tightly, almost toppling him over.
Bracken shot Kendra a pleading look, where she returned it with a glare, mouthing out that if he had better behave or he was dead. He sighed, and gently butted Tess, simultaneously making her give him some space, and making her happier, squealing that the ‘Unicorn had hugged her back.’
By the end of the party, Tess had barely left Bracken’s side. She had even managed to persuade her parents to let her lead him around the garden, on the deck where the celebrations were. She had become so attached, that she cried when they had to go, so Kendra reassured Tess that they’d try and visit with Bracken again soon, to which the girl immediately brightened up.
‘So. Was that really so bad?’ Kendra asked. Bracken sighed.
‘No, it wasn’t.’ he admitted.
The rest of the drive home, Kendra was wearing an extremely satisfied smile.
Fablehaven- Brackendra adopting a Kitten
They need a kitten. (No, I don’t think that they should be dating at this point in the book, but it works best with this idea. Also, it is set between Dragonwatch and Keys of the Demon Prison.)
Please adopt, don’t shop. :)
Kendra looked up at Bracken, who was standing behind the couch she was sitting on, looking pleased with himself and holding a silvery blue-wrapped box with a large bow on top.
He was such a chronic gift-giver, it was adorable.
‘Hey Bracken!’
‘Hi, Kendra- I have something for you!’ He handed Kendra the box, which she promptly tore apart. Lifting the lid, she saw a box filled with chocolates, and a printout of a cat silhouette taped to the bottom. Her squeal was ear-splitting.
‘WE’RE GETTING A CAT!?!?’ Bracken grinned at her shyly.
‘I thought it might be a good idea- I have already talked to Mother and your Grandparents about it. We’re going to the shelter this afternoon to adopt a kitten for the two of us.’ He thought for a moment. ‘Seth is getting a puppy, too, but that one is separate.’
Kendra continued jumping up and down in her seat, squealing excitedly and grinning like a maniac.
Two hours later, Bracken and Kendra were standing outside the shelter, with Kendra hanging on to Bracken’s arm in excitement. She hadn’t calmed down at all.
Walking inside, they were greeted by a lovely receptionist, who took them to the kitten room, before leaving them to their own devices choosing a kitten.
It took a while to circle the room, and Kendra was getting more and more disappointed as she didn’t find the ‘right one’ that they both loved.
Until they saw a tiny little silver tabby kitten with the brightest blue eyes that reminded her of Bracken. And fell instantly in love with her. And named her.
Reading her thoughts, Bracken smiled at her.
‘I was wondering when you’d see her. I agree- Mizelle is a pretty cute name, and my sister loves kittens enough that she’s be honoured to be this kitten’s namesake.’ Kendra just grinned wider, and half an hour later, the two of them were walking towards their cat, holding Mizelle in their arms.
One hour, and five different stops at pet stores later, Mizelle was home and practically showered in toys and gifts, with everything she could want and more.
And the fact that Seth’s new Irish Setter’s name was Mitzy wasn’t confusing at all.

It was a miserable day- the sky couldn’t seem to decide it it wanted to rain, be cloudy, or just be both at once. Which, of course, was why the Centaurs insisted on meeting outside to discuss Vanessa’s punishment.
‘Honestly- it isn’t even that bad! Bracken can just sever the hold, Greymane!’ Kendra was tired of all the polite compromises, and the outburst took her by surprise. Bracken winced beside her.
The tall Centaur pulled himself up, trying to look as intimidating as possible. Which really wasn’t all that hard.
‘You dare side with the Narcoblix? Even after all the has done to you, and, worse, you dare insult ME? I am the leader of the Centaurs! No puny mortal shall get away with such blasphemy in my presence!’
He began to take a threatening step towards Kendra, and just as he was about to take another, Bracken was suddenly there in front of him. Greymane blinked in surprise, and before he could say anything more, Bracken’s fist smashed into his face. The old Centaur staggered backwards, his nose bleeding slightly, and glared at Bracken in shock.
‘And, more importantly, nobody gets away with threatening Kendra in my presence. Vanessa will be pardoned, and we will take away her pizza privileges for a month. No exceptions. And no compromises. That is my final offer, Greymane.’ Kendra gaped at her boyfriend, before the Centaur glowered in assent, trotting away in humiliation.
It would have been a fight that they all knew Bracken would win anyways.
‘Hey, I try to be a peaceful being!’ Bracken argued.
‘You punched a Centaur in the face! Greymane, no les!’ Kendra retaliated.
‘He threatened me.’
‘No, he threatened ME.’
‘When someone threatens you, they threaten me, because you are my life.’
‘...That was incredibly smooth and beautiful...’
‘You still punched a Centaur in the face, though.’
‘Wait. You punched Greymane in the face!? And I wasn’t even there!?’ Seth was upset to say the least. Although perhaps for all the wrong reasons. Kendra hadn’t even noticed him sneaking up on her.
Bracken blushed slightly, looking down in embarrassment.
‘He threatened Kendra.’
‘NOW you admit it!’ Kendra grinned. Suddenly Bracken seemed to realize something.
‘Oh no. Mother’s going to kill me.’
Not that Kendra pt 2
Hello! This is adopted and continued from @fairyprincessofthedragons, and all credit goes to them. You can find pt 1 here: https://fairyprincessofthedragons.tumblr.com/post/616946763056726016/not-that-kendra.
After the coffee shop incident, the day went smoothly for Bracken and Kendra. They visited the gardens like they had planned, and ended up saving a small dragonfly fairy who had flown too close to a spiders web and been caught up, too flustered to use magic.
After a million and one thank-yous, she eventually flew off, presumably to brag to her friends that the Queen’s son and handmaiden had freed her.
Kendra watched the fairy fly off, and wondered where her fairy guards had gone when Bracken had dismissed them for the day. They had ended up becoming quite close, and taken to having ‘girl evenings’ every night when they could.
“Kendra, there’s something else I want you to see!” Bracken grinned at her.
“And what would that be?”
“A picnic!” he looked so excited Kendra couldn’t help but laugh. Sometimes her boyfriend acted like such a little kid.
“All right! Show me where it is, Your Majesty!” Kendra pretended to bow down, stopping in a shriek as Bracken tickled her mercilessly. In the end, an all-out tickle war made Kendra not only forget about the picnic, but also about Alyssa and her old friends. Bracken smiled. His plan had worked.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“All right girls. I finally got the information we needed! Kendra is in room 12, on the 8th floor.” Brittany sat down.
“How did you do it!? I’ve been trying for months!” Alyssa shrieked.
“I told the old lady who tidies the dorms that I was a late entry, and was trying to find where a friend was staying.” Alyssa only huffed, looking disgruntled.
“Anyways, Lyss, do you have a plan yet?” Trina interrupted the brewing argument. Bad feelings forgotten, Alyssa stood up, nodding enthusiastically.
“Yes! I finally do! What if we sneak in there tonight, and take her to my house! We all know she could sleep through a bomb going off next to her head.”
“Wouldn’t that be kidnapping?”
“Not if she’s our friend. Besides, it’s totally worth it!” the other two girls looked at each other and shrugged.
“Sure.”
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“Thanks Bracken, I really enjoyed our date today.”
“It was no problem.”
“How are you going to get home again? It’s a three hour drive, one if you go at Vanessa-speed. But you don’t even have a car.” Bracken hugged her.
“Raxtus dropped me off. He’s waiting for me in the parking lot now. See you later, Princess.”
“Bye!” Kendra’s fairy guards flew off the top of her wardrobe when Bracken left.
“You should get some sleep. You have classes tomorrow, and you need to study for that Calc test next week.” Kendra smiled at them gratefully.
“Thanks, girls.”
She was snoring within minutes.
“Perfect.” Alyssa grinned at Trina and Brittany. “I think she’s asleep.”
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Kendra woke up being jostled around in the back seat of a slightly old and beaten up-looking car, head resting next to Trina, one of her old friends.
“She’s awake!”
“Yes, I am, and WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU DOING!?” Trina winced and covered her ears. Kendra felt no remorse.
“DID YOU SERIOUSLY JUST KIDNAP ME?”
“It’s not kidnapping if it’s our friend.” Alyssa maintained. Kendra glared daggers at her.
“I beg your pardon, you have literally duct-taped by hands together, and chucked me in this car. That is kidnapping in my books!”
“Then the books you’ve been reading are too cliché. It’s more... taking someone against their will or knowledge, but definitely not kidnapping. Also, I child-locked the doors.”
Kendra growled, glaring at each and every one of her friends. She would have to wait for escape.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Bracken was halfway home on Raxtus when he got the distress signal. Two of Kendra’s fairies were flying towards him at top speed. When fairies flew, they could go FAST.
“My lord! We are so sorry! We have failed in our duty!” The two girls were clearly in distress, frantic and worried.
“Okay. Raxtus, can you please take us down? Thanks. When we touch down, can you please explain what happened?”
The second the dragon’s claws thumped down on the grass somewhere in the wilderness of Connecticut, the fairies swarmed Bracken again. How they managed to swarm him when there were only tow, he didn’t know, but they managed.
“It’s those girls- the ones that think Kendra is dead. They’ve kidnapped her!”
Bracken began muttering some very unprince-like things under his breath. It was a good thing the fairies had never learned to curse.
“Thank you girls. Do you know where they’re going?”
“They mentioned something about the leader, Alyssa. I think they were talking about going to her house.” Bracken whipped out his first horn. Its added power would help him reach out to Seth’s coin, even if the boy hadn’t begun the conversation.
“Seth, if, hypothetically, Kendra’s old friends had kidnapped her, where exactly is Alyssa’s house?” Seth’s groan reached the long distance.
“Seriously!? You do realize that you are TERRIBLE at keeping secrets, right Bracken?” The unicorn winced.
“Oops.” as Seth rattled off an address, Bracken was already rummaging through his bag. Thank goodness he had brought some walrus butter.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Kendra was locked in the laundry as her friends whispered what to do with her on the other side of the door. Apparently they’d forgotten that she could hear every word.
“We can’t just keep her here!”
“Well, it’s not like we can take her back now, either.”
As the hurried conversation reached the hundreds in decibels, Kendra sighed and retreated to the tiny window.
And looked straight into one of her fairies’ eyes. Biting off a startled scream, Kendra took a few deep breaths.
“What are you doing here? You do realize that Brittany is terrified of bees, right? If she see you, you’re doomed.”
“Backup is coming. Prince Bracken says to tell you that he’s on his way. Make sure that you don’t leave, and try yo not be locked up. It’ll make his job easier that way. He says he brought butter. He lands in two minutes.” Kendra nodded her understanding, and walked to the door again.
“SHUT UP!” There was a startled silence, as Kendra broke up her friends’ argument. “Let me out of here, and let’s go sit down. I will make you some hot chocolate, and you can talk to me like civilized human beings, not imps.” The hot chocolate part must have worked, because soon Kendra was standing in the middle of the living room, her friends on couches, looking guilty.
Right on time, the doorbell rung, and Kendra strolled over to open it for Bracken. Raxtus was an invisible indent on the lawn. As she reached up to kiss her boyfriend, she heard Alyssa muttering to Brittany.
“What’s HE doing here?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did he follow us?”
“I didn’t see anything.”
Kendra grinned at him. “Come in. I was about to make some hot chocolate. Do you want to help?”
“Sure.”
They walked into the kitchen, and began to make five cups, plus a little saucer for the Fairies and a bowl for Raxtus. Bracken winked at Kendra, slipping out the door to deliver the bowl and saucer, before strolling back in to sit next to Kendra on the only available couch.
“Well? Drink up. It’s the truth you wanted, so it’s the truth you’ll get.” Kendra glanced at Bracken, who had his arm around her. “Did you tell Raxtus??
“He’s out there, fully visible, right now.” Trina shot a suspicious look at them.
“Who’s Raxtus?”
“A... friend. Have you had any hot chocolate yet?” Three nods. Kendra grinned evilly. “Well, go look outside the window.” The girls looked at each other curiously, and went to look. Brittany shrieked.
“THERE IS A DRAGON ON YOUR LAWN, LYSSA! A DRAGON! AND FIVE FAIRIES!” They turned to look at Kendra, who was laughing her head off on the couch.
“That was an even better reaction than I was expecting. Now, do you want to hear about why you all believed I was dead, buried a fruit, and what I’ve been up to the last few years?”
Their chat reached well into the morning, but Kendra was just glad that she didn’t have to hide from her friends anymore.
That is it! Hope you enjoyed it! Thanks again to @fairyprincessofthedragons!
Amazing
Truth or Dare
“Truth or Dare?” The Question can put of nowhere and caused Bracken to look over at the young shadow charmer chained next to him. “ We’re in a dungeon. ” He replied slightly confused as to what possessed his friend to start this game now. “ Yes, very observant of you. That still doesn’t change my question, Truth or Dare. ” Seth pushed again. Bracken sighed knowing he wouldn’t stop until he got his way and he was in no mood to deal with Lawyer Seth. “Truth.” He replied not even sure what date you could do with you wrists chained to a wall. Though knowing Seth, he’d find a way. “ What are your intentions with my sister. ” “Dare.” Bracken immediately replied, willing to do anything else than have this conversation with Seth. “I dare you to tell me what your intentions with my sister are.” Seth shot back with a massive eye roll. “ you want to talk about this now? ” “ Yeah because now you can’t run away as you’ve been not so subtly doing every time I mention it. Besides what else are we supposed to talk about? ” “Oh I don’t know, escape plans? ” Bracken replied sarcastically, desperately trying to get out of having this conversation. He loved Seth, he was like the little brother he never had but that didn’t make any of it any less awkward. “Just answer the question.” Seth said with yet another eye roll. “ I don’t know what to say Seth. Kendra is amazing, I love her with all of my heart and I can’t imagine life without her. ” “That’s super sappy.” Now it was Bracken’s turn to roll his eyes at the reply. “ Now I do believe it’s my turn, Truth or Dare? ” “Oh so now you want to play? You didn’t seem so eager two minutes ago.” “ Just answer the question. ” Bracken mocked earning a chuckle from the Shadow charmer. “ Dare. ” “ I dare you to tell me why your so invested in your sisters love life. ” Bracken replied turning the boys own trick against him. Seth sighed heavily and looked away, the chains jingling as he attempted to run his hand through his hair out of habit. “I just, really don’t want Kendra to get hurt.” He replied after several minutes of silence, " She’s been hurt before and it took her a really long time to trust people again, to open up and talk to people. “ I guess I just want to make sure you know this isn’t a game. Kendra loves you and I don’t want anyone to play with her heart. I don’t want anyone to take advantage of that again. ” “ Seth, I will never ever take advantage of Kendra. She means the world to me, she is my world. And yeah I know sappy but it’s true. I promise you the very last thing in the entire world that I want to do is hurt Kendra. ” Bracken perfectly understood where Seth was coming from, having been there himself on several occasions, but he couldn’t find a way to make sure Seth believed him anymore that he had when he first head similar words. “ I hope for your sake that’s true, because I promise you if you ever hurt her I will make Zzyzx look like the best place on earth. ” “ I believe you, but you won’t have to” Bracken told him and he could help the shiver that shook him at the boys words, the temperature in the room seeming to drop as he made the threat. “I hope not. Now Truth or Dare?” Seth asked again returning to his usual lighthearted and mischievous tone. “ You know what Seth, Dare. Just because I’m curious. ” “ I dare you to make a high pitched scream and act like your scared of a spider. ” “What? Why?” Bracken questioned wondering where the idea had even come from. “ I want to see what the guards do. ” Seth replied with a shrug as if it was the most logical answer in the world. Yeah this was going to be interesting .

Fablehaven Secret Santa
Hello! It is finally the 19th, so I can release my gift for @imasorenson! Hope you like it.
While the line would normally snake from the entrance all the way back to the end of the carefully placed markers and beyond, today there were only about twenty people in front of Kendra and Bracken, who were waiting to be admitted into the amusement park.
Kendra had insisted they they come, seeing as Bracken had never been to one, and the fact that Christmas was only a few days away was just an added bonus. Warren had pounced on the two of them earlier in the week, practically holding them at sword point after Kendra had mentioned they were planning to visit the park, telling the two that they should go while school was still in to avoid the madness. It had taken a day or two of planning, but they had finally arrived.
Warren had been right. Since there were so few people, it only took about ten minutes for the couple to be admitted.
“What do you want to do first, Bracken?” Kendra grinned at him, already bouncing up and down, even if she wasn’t on a sugar high. Yet.
“What is there?” Bracken asked.
“More like what isn’t there! We could go on a rollercoaster, or another ride, eat food, go to the arcade-style games, or one of the stalls like throwing darts.”
“What is a rollercoaster?” Bracken’s confusion was all it took. He eyed Kendra’s evil smile nervously, as she took his hand and practically dragged him to the ride. Once again, the few people around made for a short queue, and the safety bar was being lowered in no time.
“Oh, before I forget, when we go down, you need to scream.” Bracken looked at his girlfriend, horrified.
“Do you know what happened the last time I screamed!? Seth and I were in a tickle fight, and the fairies and Astrids thought I was in trouble! It took ages to turn Seth back into something vaguely recognizable, and that was only a tiny whinny! And don’t even get me started how they managed to fit inside the house, because I don’t know, there were that many of th-AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!”
The last part was because, while Bracken was rambling, the rollercoaster had made it up to the top of the ‘hill,’ and gone over. He had begun screaming in shock, while Kendra laughed so had she could barely breathe. As they began climbing the next ‘hill,’ Kendra leaned over and kissed Bracken.
“It’s a good thing I cleared it with your mother first, then.” Her giggles made a comeback when she saw Bracken’s shell-shocked face.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The rest of the day was amazing. Bracken and Kendra went around to everything, and soon Bracken redeemed himself with a prefect aim, and a large fluffy Unicorn toy. (Insert Despicable Me ‘It’s so fluffy I’m going to die scene’ here, lol.)
Lunch was spent sitting down at a picnic table with a tub of hot chips, churros, and soft drinks, after which Kendra took Bracken to get his face painted as a rainbow.
By the time the two made it home, the sky was dark and the house’s lights were all on, waiting for them. Seth, Vanessa, Tanu, Grandma and Grandpa, Dale, and Warren were all sitting around the table, phones and cameras at the ready. After Kendra had told the Fairy Queen about the park the previous day, she’d told everyone else about it. In the end, Kendra had agreed to make sure Bracken got his face painted, and everyone else would be there to take pictures.
Bracken didn’t speak to anyone else for a week after he found out the photoshoot was planned, though he secretly kept a picture to remember the day by.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
And that’s the end! Hope you liked it, and Merry Christmas, @imasorenson and anyone else reading!
Brackendra is life
Brackendra Day 2k20
Reminder - Brackendra day will be upon us shortly! :)
Winter solstice: December 21, 2020
Words: Inspire, Gondola, Dance, Statuesque
Colors: Pink, Sky Blue, Silver, Mint Green
“What have I told you about listening to your instincts more? It’s smart. Do it.”
“How have you possibly survived this long?”
“I won’t stay long. I just had to see you.”
Have fun! As always, let me know if you have any questions! :)
YES! I can totally see this happening, THIS IS AMAZING
Headcannon that when Bracken gets overwhelmed or anxious or just having a rough time, Kendra will let him draw on her arms to calm him down.
-Bracken loves nature and drawing leaves and fairy wings helps him calm down.
-Kendra bought a bunch of different colored pens just for him.
-The first time was an accident.
-Bracken was really tired and fidgety, tapping his pen against his fingers.
-He was really good at acting like nothing was wrong, so no one noticed he was off.
-Until he drew on Kendra’s hand.
-Bracken wasn’t thinking when he drew a leaf on her and when he realized, he was super embarrassed.
-”I’m so sorry Kendra! I wasn’t thinking! I just– Let me get a paper towel! I’m so sorry!”
-Kendra just looked at it smiling and quietly asked if he could draw a flower too.
-Kendra loves it. Sometimes she’s self conscious about her various scars and how she can see her veins and how she’s not as muscular as Mara or Vanessa.
-Whenever she feels inadequate she can look at her hands and see faded pen with beautiful doodles curling around scars and making made up constellations out of her few freckles and she feels so much better.
-Bracken was super worried she’d be mad at first, so the next few times he would only do a little, but it really DID help. And then he noticed that Kendra wouldn’t wash it off right away. Maybe she really does like it?
-So its a bit of a habit.
-It’s not all the time, and it’s normally small. It’s hardly noticeable.
-But it makes helps them both.
I just need more of my anxious adorable children.
Reasons why Brackendra is amazing
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS JUST MY OPINION!
-Bracken just completes Kendra- they get along almost instantly, and work well with each other
-Bracken never assumed anything, or tried to stop Kendra, but supported her. (In book 3, Gavin tried to get Kendra to stay behind)
-Brackendra sounds better than Gavendra or Kenderl ever could.
-To the people annoyed about age differences- BM has basically said that Bracken is essentially a teenager in everything but official age.
-SPOILER ALERT FOR BOOK 4 BELOW!!!-
-Dragons age similarly to Unicorns- or at least, they can live as long. Gavin would have been at least several thousand years old, too. People seem to forget that when shipping Gavendra.
Loving this!
Brakendra :)
Credit for the Brackendra art goes to @fairykam
Why do people hate on Brackendra’s age difference? Gavin/Navarog and Verl all have THE SAME AGE DIFFERNCE! So why is a problem with Bracken, and not anyone else?
Cabinet
Hello! I’m going to try to start writing short Fablehaven stories, using a single word as my prompt from a random word generator- this one’s word was ‘cabinet.’ Hope you like it! (If anyone has any prompts or ideas, I’d be more than happy to write them!)
It was too tall.
She didn’t have a step.
And everyone else was sleeping.
Kendra didn’t quite understand why the brownies had installed a ‘secret’ cabinet sticking out halfway up the wall in the middle of the hallway, but Grandma Sorenson had quickly taken advantage and hidden cookies in it.
The cabinet was one of those heavy, old-fashioned wooden ones, with legs so tiny, they look like they shouldn’t be able to hold that much weight. How the brownies had managed to suspend it so high up without the wall or cabinet falling down was the biggest mystery on the preserve.
And Kendra was too short to reach it.
When she had woken up in the middle of the night after a nightmare craving chocolate chip cookies, the natural answer was to come to the cabinet. The cabinet she couldn’t reach. The cabinet that was too isolated to drag a chair over to. The cabinet that would probably feature in every other dream Kendra would have for the next million years while she tried to open it.
Looking at the stupid thing again, Kendra tipped her head to the side to think, before trying to jump up to open the door. She missed by a good few inches, and landed loudly. She winced, hoping she didn’t wake anyone up. Vanessa’s room was right next to it.
After deciding that everyone was still asleep, Kendra tried again, thumping down slightly quieter this time, although not by much. Abandoning the jumping effort, she tried to go on her tiptoes again, bouncing slightly with each failed attempt to even touch the cabinet.
It took everything Kendra had not to scream at the annoying thing, and the cookies just out of reach- by a long way. Whenever she was tired, Kendra had always acted slightly more childlike, as if her brain just couldn’t handle being mature when she was so tired, so it just shut down.
A pair of arms wrapped around the bouncing girl, and Kendra nearly screamed, cutting it off as she recognized Bracken behind her. He held her close for a few more seconds, before letting go with one arm and effortlessly taking the cookies out of the cabinet, understanding what she wanted without having to talk.
~
When Vanessa got up the next morning for breakfast duty, she couldn’t help but smile at Kendra and Bracken sitting on the floor underneath the open cabinet, cookie jar next to them, curled up fast asleep. Kendra had a peaceful smile of her face, and was resting her head on Bracken’s shoulder, snoring quietly.
Maybe the Unicorn wasn’t so bad after all.
Dash
Part 2 of creating a short Fablehaven story using a single word prompt from a random word generator... I got ‘dash,’ hope you like it!
“’Thank you’ does not have a dash in it, Seth!” Kendra glared at her younger brother. She didn’t have to wait long for Seth to respond.
“Yes it does!”
“No, it doesn’t! And even if it did, blank tiles aren’t used for punctuation!” The small-but-fierce scrabble game in front of them only had a few words on it, and Seth had added a blank tile and the word ‘you’ onto ‘thank’ which Kendra had placed earlier.
“Fine, I’ll make the blank tile a space mark!” Seth snapped. “But either way I’m getting my triple word!”
“A space would be considered punctuation, too!” Kendra threw her hands into the air in annoyance. “Do you not understand how to play this game!?”
“I do, actually.”
“Prove it!” Kendra jabbed her finger at him, as Seth cleared his throat.
“Scrabble is a board game, where the aim is to create words using tiles, and getting points by placing certain tiles or getting certain bonuses. A player is only allowed to have seven tiles at a time, and must replace any tiles that they place. You can only build off an already existing word, and wherever the tiles are touching, a legitimate word must exist.” Seth bowed.
“That is an explanation of how to play, Seth! Not proving anything except that you know the basic rules! Everyone knows those rules, and its the ones you didn’t cover that you need to understand!” Kendra reached over to the couch behind her, grabbed a pillow, and screamed into it.
“You asked me if I knew how to play. I demonstrated that I know the rules. Therefore, I have proven myself!”
“Did you swallow a dictionary? Ugh, I hate lawyer Seth mode.”
“Don’t we all?” Kendra jumped in surprise, turning around to look the the doorway where Bracken was leaning, grinning.
“Bracken! Can you please help to settle this?” Kendra went and explained what was happening to the Unicorn, who came over and sat next to Kendra with his arm around her.
“Sorry, Kens, but I think that Seth wins the do-you-know-how-to-play argument here. But Seth, your sister is correct about the blank tile. It can’t be used as punctuation.” Bracken thought for a moment. “Do you have the letters ‘I’ ‘N’ ‘G’ instead? Put them at the end, and you can still get your bonus.”
“Yes! Thanks horse-man!” Seth shouted, pumping his fists into the air.
“Horse-man?” Poor Bracken looked so confused, Kendra couldn’t help but laugh. Soon, Seth joined in, and even Bracken managed a slightly confused smile.
“I think it’s Seth’s new nickname for you.” Kendra explained. Bracken nodded in understanding.
“I got that much, I just don’t understand where it come from. Seth, you deeply confuse me sometimes.”
“Hey!” Seth grinned and picked up the pillow he was sitting on, flinging it at Bracken.
“This means war!” Kendra jumped to her boyfriend’s defense. Half an hour later, the biggest pillow fight in Sorenson living room history was still going strong, and the scrabble game lay forgotten on the floor.
Horses
Okay, so if Fablehaven has horses, why don’t they ever really ride them? This is how I imagine it would go if Warren had to teach Seth and Kendra how to ride... and of course, Bracken tagged along.
“Hey, Kens. You busy right now?” Warren poked his head around the door to the attic, where Kendra was busy reading with Bracken.
“I’m fine, as long as Bracken can come, too.”
“Great! See you downstairs in five! …Wait did you say Bracken?” Warren’s eyes widened as he finally took in the Unicorn sitting next to his cousin.
“Yes. Bracken. Why would that be a problem?” Kendra asked suspiciously. The Unicorn in question still had his head buried in his book, not noticing that people were talking about him. He had a gift of tuning everyone and everything out when he read- a skill Kendra was often jealous of, given the hectic-ness of the preserve.
“Um, no reason. Just... never mind. He can tag along if he wants.” Warren couldn’t run away fast enough.
Kendra just shook her head and nudged Bracken. When he finally noticed, he looked at Kendra is surprise, as if he’d forgotten she was there.
“Hey, Unicorn. Warren wants us for something. Want to come along?” Kendra asked.
“Sure. I was getting near the end anyway.”
Five minutes later, Kendra and Bracken were waiting in the living room with Seth and Warren, who was explaining the plan.
“Okay, so it came to our attention yesterday that we have stables and horses on the preserve, and yet neither of you knows how to ride.” Warren stated. “So, Stan asked if I could teach you!”
“Wow. Grandpa really trusted you around horses? Do you have any idea how many ways you could hurt yourself, Warr? I mean, even for a regular person there’s risk. But for you?” Seth whistled in appreciation, and Kendra giggled.
“What’s that supposed to mean, Seth?” Warren pouted.
“Only that you seem to have the most unlucky track record possible for injuring yourself.” Bracken interjected. “You managed to trip over a flower and break your toe last month. And just yesterday you cut yourself on a butter knife. And don’t even get me started on that concussion you got from a pillow fight! Face it, Warren. You could hurt yourself with air.”
Kendra’s laughter proved to be contagious, and soon everyone except Warren was doubled over with tears streaming down their faces.
“Ha, ha, ha. You’re all hilarious. We’ll see how much you’re laughing when I make you ride horses!” Warren retaliated.
“Actually, I’m glad you brought that up... What exactly do you mean by riding horses?” Bracken looked nervous at Warren’s evil grin.
“This is Tango, Admiral, Storm, and General.” Warren said, gesturing at the four horses lined up in turn. He’d spent the last hour lecturing the others the basics of riding.
Tango was a tall buckskin that was shaking his mane regally, Admiral a dark red, Storm a dark grey with small white freckles, and General was a handsome bay.
“Cool! Can I ride General?”
“No.” Warren grinned as he shot Seth down, before continuing. “Kens, you have Tango. He’s tall and a bit of a handful, but you should be able to manage well enough. Seth, you have Admiral. He’s a bit cheeky, so you’ll need to keep him in check so he doesn’t do anything. General is mine, and has been for the last ten years.”
Finally, Warren looked at Bracken with an evil smile, and gestured at the remaining horse, who was prancing around daringly and tossing her head. “This is Storm. She’s our most challenging horse- never met anyone who lasted more than ten minutes on her. Since you’re a Unicorn, great around equines, and obviously ridden before even without even counting the fact you technically ARE a horse, your job will be to ride and tame her.”
Bracken gulped, but straightened and rose to the challenge.
“Good luck. You’ll need it.” Bracken wasn’t sure who had said it, but it didn’t bode well for his afternoon.
Half an hour later, they were trotting down a path with Warren and General in the lead, followed by Kendra, Seth, and finally Bracken, who was seemingly in a constant battle of wills with Storm the entire first half of the ride.
Seth and Admiral had seemed to click almost instantly- Kendra blamed it on the troublemaker genes. The two had already proven to love rushing ahead, going fast, and generally annoying everyone else, even if Seth had been a bit scared and insecure at first.
Kendra on Tango worked, although they didn’t seem to click nearly as well as the troublemakers had. It seemed to be a purely working relationship, and everyone could tell that Kendra would do better on another horse. She seemed to handle riding really well though, and Warren had been impressed.
Thanks to being a Unicorn, Bracken was doing better than anyone had thought he would. Although Storm had run off when Bracken was trying to get on, spooking Tango in the process as Bracken ran on foot behind her. But once Bracken was on, Storm had calmed down immensely, even if every few minutes for the first while she would suddenly act up, and try to run away. Whenever she did, the Unicorn was there to correct her, concentrating hard. A good distance into the ride, Storm had calmed down completely, and she and Bracken suddenly got along perfectly, making a wonderful team.
The group stopped for lunch near Dryad’s Hollow, dismounting with winces and hobbling over to the stream where they left their horses to drink.
Warren spread out a picnic blanket he’d taken with and handed out sandwiches. A bottle of water was passed around, and the four of them talked and laughed together.
“Did you see how Storm reared up?” Seth gushed. “How did you stay on, Bracken?”
“Practise, I guess.” Bracken shrugged.
“Admiral is awesome! We get along so well!” Seth continued. “And trotting was so much fun! When do we get to gallop?”
“Probably never.” Warren grinned. “Horses really don’t gallop all that much with a rider- racehorses being the exception. And it’s really hard, too. Don’t worry- when you have a little more experience and don’t look like you’re about to fall off, I’ll teach you to canter.”
“Cool!”
It happened as they were riding home. One minute, everyone was fine, and the next, Warren didn’t see a branch and was sprawled across the path with a concussion.
Dismounting, Bracken rushed over, making sure Warren was okay. Satisfied that the man wasn’t about to die or anything, Bracken picked him up and slung him over General’s saddle, before taking the reins and mounting Storm again, now leading General from horseback.
The ride home after that was uneventful. Reaching the stables, everyone dismounted and handed the horses off to Dale, who was feeding the animals, before rushing Warren off the main house and Tanu.
The Samoan took one look at Warren, before ordering Bracken to lay him down on his bed and take care of Seth and Kendra, who had been unusually quiet ever since the accident.
Bracken nodded, curling his arm around Kendra and putting his hand on Seth’s shoulder, steering the siblings towards the kitchen. They plopped down on the seats, before Bracken suddenly jumped up again, and made three cups of hot chocolate.
“I told you- Warren was bound to hurt himself.” Seth was the first to break the silence, sipping on his drink. “The poor guy wasn’t even trying.”
Kendra laughed. “I bet he wasn’t even looking for branches!”
“Nah, he probably was, but completely missed the only dangerous one!” Seth grinned.
“True. I told you, he could hurt himself on air!” Bracken added. With that, any lingering sadness disappeared, and Seth began choking on his hot chocolate from laughing too hard.
Ever since their first ride, Kendra and Seth made a point to tease Warren about low hanging branches, and the three of them plus Bracken would more often than not ride together every weekend.
