A Review on ‘Dracula’ by Bram Stoker

Genre: Gothic/Adventure
Rating: 3/4
Summary: An English solicitor named Jonathan Harker visits the Castle Dracula of Transylvania, Romania, where he meets the famous Count Dracula. By the day, he becomes aware of himself being held captive in the labyrinth like castle. In the meantime, Harker’s fiancée Mina Murray grows anxious of his return while noticing some great changes in her best friend, Lucy Westenra.
My Opinion: I was very excited about this book and waited till October to get the Halloween vibes. Unfortunately my exam date was set for October and I had to sneak some time to read it. Anyway, I was able to finish reading the book and liked it. The gothic environment was evident and at times it creeped me out. The environments of the castle and the graveyard were really creepy. The fact that the whole book was written in the format of letters, diaries and journals, kept me guessing. I did not particularly like any character. I didn’t feel emotionally connected to anyone. They seem too plain. A minor character of a mental patient named Renfield was the only one I found interesting. Another problem I struggled with was that the novel was too descriptive. It took a lot of my attention and will power to go through the whole book. But overall, the story was thrilling.
Quote: “How blessed are some people, whose lives have no fears, no dreads; to whom sleep is a blessing that comes nightly, and brings nothing but sweet dreams.”

So beautifully innocent, so beautifully doubtful, so exceedingly open, so sensually naive .. a journey from security to awakening to being an adult. To self-determination.... because ultimately that is not what life should be about. At the end of the great act of grace consummated out of true love.

This film is so many more..... if you can see it

Or you could be cheeky and assume that Dracula just stole the bag where he keeps his toupée.
Marzi, maybe you can help. In the newest post of Dracula Daily, Dracula (spoiler???) steals Harker’s things including his ‘rug’. Curious, I researched & literally all the info I found re: railway rugs was: they’re cited in Victorian novels, used as a blanket or hung up for privacy & some folded into ‘carpet bags’. No existing images. Do you have any more info? Were they made of rug-like materials? How did people keep their things from falling out of the rug-turned-bag without side seams? Thanks
Believe it or not, I've actually seen miniature versions from the 19th century! At least one.

(Novelty candy container in the form of a railway rug, also often called a carriage blanket. It resembles a blanket rolled up and bound with leather straps. Late 19th century. Sold as a dolls' accessory on Ruby Lane.)
As for the bag function, can't help you there, I'm afraid. This is the first I've ever heard of that (carpet bags being, usually, normal sewn bags made of leftover carpet scraps). I did find a quote from Robert Louis Stevenson, about having a railway rug "in the form of a bag," but that almost sounds more like a sleeping-bag sort of thing than Blanket Origami. (source. the blog author infers that the bag could be "opened" into a blanket, but that doesn't sound like what Stevenson is describing, to me)
Sometimes self-care is hitting Count Dracula with a shovel

I love Dracula because it really shows that the age old tradition of giving men random but identifying nicknames when you’re just talking shit with the girlies™️ dates all the way back the Victorian era
Neil Josten is a Jonathan Harker type narrator and this is a hill I will die on. They’re not unreliable narrators in any capacity because they are telling the story relatively how it is but they’re both absolute idiots who are focusing on the wrong details… that detail may or may not be a love interest
the biggest warning of the dangers of people pleasing is jonathan harker ignoring the 27,000 signs something was off with that little gay freak host of his and not leaving the castle sooner

to one thing i have made up my mind; if we find out that mina must be a vampire in the end, then she shall not go into that unknown and terrible land alone. i suppose it is thus that in old times one vampire meant many; just as their hideous bodies could only rest in sacred earth, so the holiest love was the recruiting sergeant for their ghastly ranks.

I love how quickly Mina switches up, like one moment girlys hypnotized and doing or saying some unsettling shit and then right after act like nothing ever happend.
