“When I figure out what it is that frightens me, I shall also know what I love here. Fear has always guided me toward what I desire. And because I desire, I fear. Often it was fear that took me by the hand and led me. Fear leads me to danger. And everything I love is risky.”
— Clarice Lispector, from Complete Stories; “Brasília” (via la-femme-terrible)
Why foreigners have the wrong idea about Brazil?
Maybe because the stereotypes people made, but I'll pass everything I know that is a common sense here:
1) Our capital isn't Buenos Aires, really we don't get along with Argentina and I don't know why. We speak portuguese, one very, very hard to learn language, so hard that even natives don't know it right. Our good-morning is like that "Bom dia!" and not "Buenos dias!", you can see the difference.
2) We have incredible metropolises, amazing urban centers, WE DON'T LIVE IN THE JUNGLE, BAREFOOT, EATING BANANAS AT THE MIDDLE OF THE MONKEYS (some brazilians hate bananas, like me).
3) We have more cities than Rio and São Paulo, really, you can believe that. I find some prettier than these two. The more amazing places to meet are Bonito, in Mato Grosso do Sul, Chapada Diamantina, in Bahia, Gramado, in Rio Grande do Sul, Amazonia of course, none of these have beach. But Brazil is like a continent, very diversified, in the south we have european climate and cities whose remember Germany, Switzerland and Netherlands (there is a city called Holambra, mixing of Netherlands in portuguese that is "Holanda" with Brazil). The southeast (where is São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro (both the state not the city) and Minas Gerais) is the center of development, technology is there, and the cool perfomances (artists think that Brazil is only there, but the more lively audience certainly are in Salvador-Bahia), everyone knows São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, they are beautiful, I can't deny, but what people don't show is that they have problems just like other cities, Rio for example is quite dangerous in some areas, in others less so, but it remains in less dangerous areas. In the northeast are located the most amazing beaches, and the "big cities" less developed, but they are not left behind for much. The Northeast problem is the semi-desert region, which is very dry and the population suffers from it, but the more coastal regions do not have this problem, large cities that are worth visiting in the northeast are all, each offers one thing, but the main ones are Salvador in Bahia, Fortaleza in Ceará, Natal in Rio Grande do Norte, and the amazing places you can visit are National Park of Chapada Diamantina in Bahia, Ponta do Seixas in Paraíba, Abrolhos, Itacaré, Ilhéus, Porto Seguro and Trancoso in South Bahia Coast, North Coast of Bahia, which has the longest coastline of Brazil, mainly: Praia do Forte, Massarandupió e Conde, the National Park Serra da Capivara in Piaui, Fernando de Noronha, and National Park of Lençóis Maranhenses in Maranhão. In the center and north there are incredible landscapes of forest, but the most special place is Bonito in Mato Grosso do Sul, which has sources of thermal and crystal clear water, is an obligatory stop in Brazil. Amazonia is another known, without explanation for what it offers beautiful.
4) Not required exaggerated vaccinations to come to Brazil in large cities, except those next to the forest regions such as the northern and central region. In the south, southeast and northeast do not see have a long time a incident with most diseases that foreigners are afraid when come visit Brazil.
There are a million things, but first things first.
