âWould you be able to send this letter to the address written on it? Personally?â
The girl you saved is named Ester, and without fail, people whose lives have been saved often feel indebted to their savior, so you know it would be right to have a little faith in her when you give her this task.
And as expected, sheâs nodding without question and goes on her merry way.
It was the first thing you asked of her after all, because when you told her you had no need for the help she wanted to offer you with the injuries you sustained at the party along with wanting to help you feel comfortable in Alexanderâs mansion, you could tell she was immediately angsty and in need of wanting to do anything you asked of her.
Nice girls like her often get taken advantage of.
Well, thatâs none of your problem.
You take care of yourself with the treatment Ester provided for you, treating the cuts from where the bullets managed to wheeze past you, and bandaging yourself up before leaving the room provided for you.
Little Kiwi comes barking at your feet before you even reach the grand living room and despite not one to give or show affection, you pick the little thing up albeit reluctantly.
âKid, isnât it about time you head to sleep? And donât lick me again, please, thatâs quite rude.â
You hear a gentle chuckle from a familiar deep voice and finally walk into the living room to find both Alexander and Asher already there.
âDogs donât necessarily understand rudeness, though he listens to you quite well,â Alexander notes at the obedient puppy in your arms. He doesnât wiggle around or bark and remains nestled where you hold him. When you take your seat on the sofa with a small space between you and Asher, the old man speaks again. âI heard you refused treatment from my people.â
You clear your throat awkwardly. âForgive me, Iâm not used to foreign touches.â
He knows you donât mean âforeignersâ per se and narrows his gaze slightly, possibly out of curiosity. âYou have quite the skills, young lady, for having an unknown name.â
âMy name is Y/N,â you tell him, sitting up. âI am a Reaper, the Grim Reaper of South Korea. My father passed away about a year ago, he was a good friend of your son Karl.â
âKarl.â He rubs his chin thinking about it. âSo why have you come to Norway? To meet up with Karl?â
âKarl and I have never been that close, sir.â Of course not, you hate that man. Seeing his face alone will make you want to punch him but you know better than that. So keeping yourself calm, you look away to the side where the windows are, covered by pretty rose gold curtains. âI came here because I quite like the way the sun never sets during this time. It brings me peace.â
âYouâre on vacation?â He raises a brow, doubtful, and looks toward Asher for confirmation but the man just shrugs without giving him an answer.
âYou could say that,â you reply, and the old man clears his throat.
âIt takes someone special to dodge all those bullets without managing any fatal injuries,â he returns to the topic of the matter as he leans back into his seat, an ankle propped onto a knee. âMy son never mentioned someone like you, or his good friend.â
âThe skills I acquired were not from my father, sir.â
âSo you had a different master?â
âI was trained by a Yakuza master. He goes by the name Kitagawa Daisuke.â
Kitagawa Daisuke. Anyone who lives in the darkness knows the name. Itâs almost like saying Shakespeare and an immediate ding pops into one's head. Your master is that famous in the underground world.
âNo wonder..â Alexander looks at you with fascination now, a small crooked smile curling along his lips, eyes brightening. He knows not just anyone can call themself a disciple of Kitagawa Daisuke and it just further proves a point as to how dangerous the mission will be when you finally go up against your master. That is, if time will allow it. Who knows if youâll even survive this mission.
Youâre just dancing around with death at this point and heâs leading the moves.
âNow that you mention it, you have a sort of aura that you exude in the way Iâve seen with Master Kita. You live up to his name, no disciple of his would have let the enemiesâ move confuse her.â
He must be talking about how you managed to recognize the motives of the enemies when you realize the focus was not on Alexander himself but his grandson, Asher Larsen.Â
You give the man a small glance before looking down at the puppy whoâs now slowly dozing off in your lap. You give him a small scratch behind the ear, doting on him a bit. Who would have thought even the enemies knew the life of a dog mattered more to Alexander than his own grandson.
So Asher was right when he said Alexander doesnât have favorites, which means that if someone does manage to gain his favor, it wouldnât just be in your favor but youâd have more eyes on your back more than before.
Sounds like a headache.
But itâs the only way you can get rid of Karl. Because if you gain Alexanderâs favor, itâll mean he wonât blink an eye when you tell him you want his own son dead.
âMaster told me to always keep my senses heightened no matter the situation.â
He hums at the answer and in a way, you hope this little attention youâve gained from Alexander is enough to gain a bit of his favor. They say Alexander doesnât like people who deliberately kiss up someoneâs shoes to get to where they want. Heâs probably had enough of those people. He also likes people who have a backbone and knows how to protect themselves.
âHow would you like to be my new caretaker for Kiwi?â The proposal Alexander gives has your head perked up his way, feeling a bit dumbfounded and surprised, but he continues before you can reject or accept the offer. âYouâre here on vacation, arenât you? Iâm sure Kiwi would love to continue seeing you until itâs time for you to return home.â
Perhaps he knows a bit of your plan. Perhaps he doesnât. Either way, heâs giving you a great opportunity to remain seen by his side.
âI know it may sound a lot asking a mafia boss but I quite like you, Miss Y/N.â
âNo, itâs quite alright,â you shake your head lightly and look down at the now sleeping puppy in your lap before giving Alexander the answer. âIâd gladly accept.â
He smiles, satisfied, and when he leaves after taking the sleeping puppy from you, youâre left alone with Asher who had been silent the whole exchange between you and Alexander.
âIâm impressed, that was quite the feat. No oneâs ever gotten this far this fast.â When you look at the man whoâs finally speaking up, thereâs a small curl up his lips when he looks your way, and you guess this man is usually stoic for the most part. How great youâre earning a bit of favor from both the grandfather and the grandson.
âI guess itâs just in my nature to have people join my side.â You give him a simple reply, one he does not refute, and the day ends with that.
You donât get a wink of sleep at all staying there in that mansion and you know itâs because youâre in an unfamiliar place. Youâve never been good at adapting to something new. It took some time for you to settle into the Bangtan manor when you first moved there years ago, but unlike how it was there and back at your own manor, Alexanderâs mansion gives you some sort of comfort youâve never had before.
Itâs probably the fact that night never comes. Your room has windows placed at a good spot, where the sun seems to shine through even though there are clouds blocking part of it. It isnât as bright as it was when you first arrived at the airport but when it still lights up the sky around three am, youâre grateful for being here, in Norway.
Norway is pretty in a way Korea has never been and being here, despite the mission youâre on, gives you a sense of peace and calmness Korea has never given you. Itâs a foreign country and yet something about it, something about the sun not being allowed to set and give way to the stars and moon, to the darkness, you have the urge to stay here if you could. Forever if possible.
But peace can never truly stay forever as long as you live this life.
You have people to go after, a revenge plot youâre on. Maybe when everything is over, if you manage to survive in the end and meet your last victim without dying, maybe then you can return here.
But first comes earning Alexanderâs favor.
âYouâre going to be in charge of taking care of his dog?â Hoseokâs face is a bit comical when you relay them the news once morning comes and you arrive back at the place Namjoon has provided for you. âJust what do you know about taking care of dogs?â
âNot much,â you admit as you scroll through your phone in hopes of learning, âbut Alexanderâs given me a bit of trust so I might as well take the opportunity. Ah, speaking of,â you put your phone down for a second, looking between the two Bangtan men, âdonât the two of you have some experience in taking care of dogs? Youâll teach me, then.â
Itâs a request that comes out of nowhere, especially after just dropping the bomb on them, but itâs not like thereâs anything else they can really do.
Namjoon sent them here in support for you and despite the awkward air around each of you, youâre one to ignore all signs and pretend everything is and has always been alright.
âWell an important part of a dogâs routine is taking walks,â Jungkook speaks up after being quiet for a while. His brows are slightly furrowed, thinking. âMr. Larsen has actually given you quite the task.â
Heâs right.
Taking a dog out on walks means being out in the open air where enemy eyes are everywhere. If last night proves that Kiwi serves more purpose to Alexander than his own grandson â and the enemies know that â then being the dog sitter isnât just any mere maidâs job.
They have to be smart, agile, quick, and strong because theyâre looking after what equals an heir.
Youâre basically Kiwiâs bodyguard.
âMaybe this is his way of testing me.â It has to be. He couldnât just have trusted a random stranger to take care of something that clearly means a lot to him. Though that begs the question as to why.
Is it because you mentioned Kitagawa as your master? Heâs quite well known after all, and well respected at that.
Still, somethingâs a little weird.
But if youâre trying to get close to the old man, you might as well take advantage of this while not forgetting to remain cautious.
No one can ever be trusted fully. There is always an ulterior motive behind oneâs action.
âI have a question, sir.â When you return to the manor a little later that day, the first person you go to is Alexander, who easily allows you into his proximity just minutes after you asked for his time. You thought initially itâd be a while until you get your reply, after all, heâs a Godfather whoâs probably busy with all sorts of things, which is why itâs surprising the reply came so soon and was received well.
His butler didnât lead you to an office, rather, you found yourself walking into a pretty greenhouse that sort of reminds you of the one back at home.
Itâs massive in size though, thatâs a difference, but you can clearly tell itâs being taken care of well in the way your Reapers takes care of your greenhouse.
âOne moment, Miss Y/N.â
Alexander has his back turned to you when you find him towards a corner, with a water can in hand as he personally feeds the plants the amount of water needed with a serene expression on his face.
Kiwi, who had followed you when you were led by the butler, walks over to respectfully nuzzle against his masterâs foot.
âPretty, arenât they?â The old man comments with a smile once heâs done watering the plants and places the can back in its place.
âItâs a surprise youâre able to keep them alive here,â you utter as you take another look around at the greens all around you. âI have one back in Korea, though my Reapers take care of them.â
Alexander takes a seat on a bench and Kiwi jumps over to lay on his lap. âTaking care of things personally brings me peace.â
â...Does it, now?â In a world where things are always chaotic, you suppose having somewhere to go to for peace is ideal. âI donât have a greenhouse for personal taste though.â
âDo you grow poison?â He asks and thereâs really no use lying.
âAmongst other things.â
He falls silent for a moment, a serene silence, and itâs strange the way he looks at you in a way no oneâs ever done before. Youâve seen creepy old men before, met a couple of them personally against your will, but Alexander doesnât remind you much of them. He stands out further, but in a way that isnât bad at all and for some reason that brings you another sort of uncomfortable feeling you donât think youâve ever felt before.Â
Itâs strange and foreign, and perhaps he understands the effect heâs made on you because he lets out a light chuckle.
âI used to be just like you, little one.â
Your brows furrow at his words, confused. âIâm not sure I know what you mean, sir.â
âAlways in a rush, never stopping to revel in the scenery.â
Because thereâs no time for that. Time doesnât wait for anyone and the enemies certainly don't. Youâve finally gained some sort of peace after your fatherâs death but even then, letting yourself go in order to be free from the chains isnât exactly as easy as one may think.
Youâre rushing because you want to reach peace, because you want a moment in time when things finally slows down and youâre okay with it, with the clocks existing, with the time ticking.
Peace doesnât come to just anyone willingly.
âYouâre anxious,â Alexander notes and perhaps youâre uncomfortable because he sees through a part of you that only people you allow in sees.
This is why you hate old people.
They can tell so easily because theyâve been through things.
âIf I let time catch up on me, there will be nothing left in front of me.â
âIs that what you believe?â He asks, a hand running through Kiwiâs fur as the little dog begins to fall asleep. âWhat if what you want is already in front of you? Perhaps you just donât want to face it because youâre afraid.â
Afraid?
Afraid of what?
But maybe heâs right. Maybe you know exactly what heâs talking about.
âYouâre running away.â
Yes.
This man certainly does make you uncomfortable.
Not like the creeps, not like Leehyun, but not like Mister Butler either. Though in a way, thereâs something familiar that you sense in him in the way youâve felt with Mister Butler. As if he has a window to see through your soul.
But youâre sure not all old people know everything. They can only guess from what theyâve been given and seen.
You decide to keep your guard up.
âThe question you wanted to ask,â perhaps he felt you trying to run from him so he changes the subject, âWhat was it?â
Right.
âWhen I take Kiwi out on walks, Iâm sure you realize there may be people out there who will take advantage of those times. I donât know the streets well and I donât know who means well and who wants Kiwi dead. So I wanted to ask; the people that decide to come after me during Kiwiâs walk time, do you want them dead or alive when I bring them to you?â
So blunt and straight to the point, Alexander chuckles at that, amused.
âIâm sure a disciple of Master Kita will come to understand who poses a threat and who doesn't. I donât care about the lives of those who want my little puppy dead. It doesnât matter who they are, if they come after him, kill them. After all,â his eyes are gentle when he looks down at the puppy, though thereâs a glint of danger that flashes in the light of his eyes, âonly people with evil hearts will want to hurt an innocent puppy.â
Evil hearts. What a strange way to put it that way.
You get too curious not to ask; âDo you believe we arenât evil? A little kid might subject us to the same category as them. We all kill after all. It doesnât matter what, it doesnât matter who. Killers are all evil in the eyes of some.â
He doesnât think much on it when he answers your question. âIn my eyes, many of us, like you and I, kill only for survival.â You and I, he says. âIf an apocalypse were to happen, youâd kill a zombie for survival, wouldnât you? You wouldnât just it bite you and you certainly wouldnât let them bite someone you care for. Youâd kill them. For survival.â
He looks up, eyes as clear as day. âThis business weâre inâŠweâre in the same boat.â
Killing to survive.
Killing because there is no other choice.
You donât think youâve ever met a man like him who seems so sentimental on life as if a part of him is satisfied with what heâs gone through but he also holds some regret, things he knows beyond you, years heâs lived more than you, and has gained wisdom from all the experience.
No one from this business has ever looked in the same lens as he does on life and you hate it.
You hate how it makes you feel.
So you drop the subject and leave the greenhouse, feeling that creepy sense of goosebumps on your body as you go.
When Kiwi wakes from his nap a little after, he comes to find you and you take him out on the walk you promised him before that meeting with Alexander.
The walk is nice, the scenery different from that of Seoul, and the breath of fresh air it allows you to intake with a piece of mind helps you remain calm and collected. Kiwi walks beside you without a leash, his little feet taking you down the paths as if heâs done this a thousand times before, with his little nose curious at every little thing around him.
He doesnât ever stray away and you guess perhaps even the little one understands the dangers of what it means to be himself. In all honesty, you prefer cats over dogs but you have to admit this isnât so bad â well, being in Norway helps, you guess.
In Seoul, the streets wouldnât forgive you for taking a walk so carefreely like this.
But of course, Norway has its own dangers. You are taking care of a prominent figure of a powerful mafia after all.
For the most part, you had been following Kiwi and letting him guide you where his nose leads him, but when the two of you come towards a lake where lies a bridge at the center, the little puppy suddenly stops in his tracks, sniffs the air, before retracing back to you.
Your brows furrow slightly when he steps up to your feet, hiding in between them, and when you hear a small noise out of the ordinary and look up with a calm gaze at the sudden new presence that has now surround the both of you, an exasperated sigh leaves you.
So much for peace and quiet.
âHey lady, whatâre you doing with that dog?â A man asks in Norwegian.
âDog sitting,â you reply in English.
They look amongst one another, confusion plastered on their faces probably because theyâve never seen you around before and when Kiwi grinds his teeth and growls lowly at them, you put a foot closer to him, trying to ease the little puppy.
âWhat happened to the old sitter? Dead?â He speaks up again, a brow raised your way. Perhaps heâs testing your ability to understand him so when he speaks in his language, you continue replying in English with perfect understanding of one another.
âNot dead. Iâm just a temporary sitter.â
âAnd who are you? Iâve never seen you around Alexander before.â
âJust a common girl.â You take a small step back seeing the way he reaches for something in his pockets.
âYou should know that the streets are dangerous.â
A little chuckle leaves you. âI wouldnât be trusted with Alexanderâs dog if I didnât know that, now would I? Still, thatâs a very bad idea,â you beckon at the gun he pulls out. âYou wouldnât want to do that.â
The corner of his lip curls upwards as he brings his gun forward to his face, playing with it just as his friends start to close in on you. âAnd why not? Are you afraid, little common girl?â
âAfraid?â You tilt your head back, laughing. âNo, no, itâs not me who should be afraid.â He sends you a furrow in his brows at the way you look so relaxed and so you go on. âAlexander has already given me permission to eliminate anyone who poses a threat, which means I donât have to go easy on you or spare your lives.â
âReally?â He scoffs, taunting you. âOne against seven, you really think a little girl like you can take us?â
âOh no, Iâm not talking about me, though youâd be surprised I can totally take you.â
âWhat?â
âYou should learn to heighten your senses, old man, maybe then youâd realize we arenât the only ones here.â With that signal, someone from the group has their neck slashed from behind and another one gets shot right in the head.Â
One by one, they fall as you calmly pick up the scared little dog and stroke along his head to calm him down. He leans into your touch as the two of you ignore whatâs happening around you, and once he finally seems alright again, you turn back to where Jungkook and Hoseok are standing, the enemies all dead on the ground.
You take one glance down at the dead bodies before checking the time on your watch. âIâll inform Alexander and have his people clean this up,â you say as you reach for your phone. âMeanwhile, would one of you like to accompany me back to his mansion? Take on the role Taehyung took back at London?â
Jungkook comes along while Hoseok stays back and the walk back for the most part lies in silence.
Drama only occurs once you return to the mansion, hearing the sound of a familiar voice you havenât heard in some time now. He shouts angrily you hear it through the halls and when you walk into the living room, you find Karl Larsen with three of his men behind him, reprimanding poor little Ester with Asher standing off to the side, looking bored and exasperated of his uncle.
No one stops him.
âAre you that incompetent? Just how useless are you that my father has to choose a stranger to take over your job? I told you to keep an eye on that mutt and you canât even do that?â
Huh. Who would have thought Ester was actually Karlâs servant who had been assigned to look over Kiwi before you came in to take over temporarily? Though from the looks of it, when she cowers in fear under his demands, her head lowered, eyes tightly shut, shoulders trembling slightly, she doesnât like this man so much.
Who does after all?
But she did look a lot more carefree living in this manor, looking after Kiwi under Alexanderâs commands. Alexander isnât known to bring just anyone in to work for him, which means Ester managed to gain his trust. Heâs good at knowing who to trust, he wouldnât just be easily swayed by his own bloodâs opinions, so if given the chance, you believe that Ester wouldnât hesitate to betray Karl.
Sheâs a sweet girl, you donât doubt that.
Asher on the other hand, you arenât too sure if a man like him deserves the benefit of the doubt.
He senses your presence though, unlike Karl and his men, and when he looks up to meet your eyes from the entryway of the living room, he stands up a little more straight, a small curl turning upwards upon the corner of his lips.
Maybe heâs just bored with petty family affairs and has no say in what his uncle wants or does. Family positions are important in the mafia after all.
âWhere is she? The new girl?â Karlâs voice snaps back, his eyes bulging and you step towards them despite Jungkookâs caution, knowing the signs of that man. âBring her to me now, you uselessââ
His hand raises in the air and before it can come down at the young girlâs head, you grab his wrist mid-air with your left hand, stopping him successfully. âIf youâre really that upset about the change, why donât you bring it up to your father, spoiled old man?â
His brows furrow tightly when he looks your way initially, before his expression begins to cool and soften when he realizes just who it is that dared to stop him from punishing his subordinate. The strength of his arm weakens and he brings it back to his side, fixing the cuff of his suit, while a smirk plays on his lips as he keeps his gaze on you.
âY/N,â the way he says your name makes you want to vomit and though for a second looking at that familiar, disgusting smirk on his face causes your mind to want to resurface the memories of all the things heâs done, you keep them back in, focusing on other things to not trigger it. âLook at you, youâve grown so much since the last time I saw you. What are you doing here in Norway? Came to pay me a visit?â
He doesnât know what happened to your father, you realize through those words, which is a bit surprising because of how close the two of them were, but then again, after the wipe of your father and his people, it kind of makes sense Karl never got word of your fatherâs death.
Both Asher and Jungkook are confused about the way Karl is acting so friendly and close to you, as well as the way he just naturally turns his attention from being angry at Ester to invite you to take a seat.
You follow him and settle Kiwi in your lap and see the way he glances at the puppy, a slight bitterness contouring his features before it disappears all too quickly.
He doesnât like Kiwi, that much is clear, and with the way he addresses you, you can tell this man still thinks you of the naive little girl who would submit to just anyone without fighting back.
âYour words are a lot sharper than they used to be,â he notes, remembering the way you spoke to him. âSeems youâre finally growing into the woman that your father trained you to be.â
With a hand stroking the fur of Kiwiâs, you take a look at his three men. One of them is someone you recognize, the other two are completely new faces.
âTell me then, how have you been since I left Seoul?â
One year, he came and left â not even one year but a summer, four months â and that was all it took for him to do all the things heâd done.
âI have news to give you, sir,â you say and he tsks at you.
âCome on now, call me what you used to call me. We were close, werenât we? Donât treat me like a stranger now, Y/N.â
He puts a hand on your shoulder and you bite your tongue back, resisting the urge to run from his touch. So with a tight grin, you give him the news heâs been needing to catch up on. âI am the Grim Reaper now..uncle.â
That amused expression on his face falls slightly, masked with surprise and confusion, and he takes one look at Jungkook who stands guard behind you, before returning his gaze back on you, flabbergasted.
âYour fatherâs dead?â He breathes, not believing it. âWhy didnât anyone tell me? Howâd he die?â
Telling him the truth now would lead to an outburst from him and you canât have Jungkook seeing that. Karl is a madman and if he knows of the truth here before strangers outside his and your people, he will definitely forget about the way your true relationship with your father is supposed to be kept a secret from the public.
âI apologize, uncle, preparations for his funeral and my succession took longer than expected.â Jungkook knows those words arenât true but thankfully he knows to keep quiet.
âI could have helped,â Karl insists and you give him a pressed smile.
Itâs strange the way he canât comprehend just why the daughter of his friend whom heâs hurt many times did not want him involved in her family affairs, but you guess the minds of psychopaths are just like that. They can understand human emotions but they cannot feel them, and so they cannot emphasize with others.
âDo you not remember all the things youâve done to me?â You want to ask him. âDo you not recall what you and father had done? Why would I want your help?â But you bite your tongue back just as Kiwi stirs from your touch, probably sensing a change in you.
The more you face the people who have done you wrong, the harder it is to keep the facade, you realize. Namjoon once said to stop before it all breaks you and you told him broken things cannot be broken even more but perhaps they can.
They can.
Youâve reached your breaking point before, not just once or twice, and yet it seems the world has just proven to you that glass can keep shattering and shattering until there is nothing left but dust.
Are you prepared to turn into dust?
You are. Youâve said it before.
âA broken glass can never mend itself to the way it used to be, the only thing it can do is break even more.â
You were prepared, your body was, but is your mind prepared? Will your mind ever be prepared?
No one is ever prepared to be broken, even if they think they are, and breaking again and again does not make you numb to the pain.
Kiwi whimpers on your lap, his head nuzzling into the palm of your hand when you stop stroking him. They say that dogs can smell human emotions and in turn, adopt them as their own, and hearing the distress whimpers, you try to return to Karl and give him a reply and yet nothing happens. You canât even open your mouth to speak. You feel frozen on the spot.
Why now? Why now, whynow, whynow, whynowwhynow?
Footsteps are heard upon the silence of the room. âWhatâs making my Kiwi sound like that?â A low rumble demands an answer but you remain still, unable to move.
You feel paralyzed.
Kiwi looks up at his masterâs voice for a second before going back to nuzzle against you and lend you his warmth, and while the people in the room stand up straight at his presence, Karl even going up to greet his father, you remain planted on the sofa.
Alexander ignores Karl to walk over to where his puppy is. He takes a glance your way, with Asher confused and Jungkook concerned and a little panicked because of the state youâre in, but rather than making this a big deal and reprimanding you for causing his puppy to sound the way he does, Alexander instead remains calm.
âCome here, Kiwi,â he calls, and though the pup hesitates at first, looking between you and his master, he eventually jumps up and into Alexanderâs arms. âKarl, Iâll deal with you later. Right now Iâm too busy to entertain guests.â
Though Karl looks like he wants to protest at first, he nods in reply, knowing he cannot talk back to his father. You were hoping heâd just leave it at that and go ahead with his men but for some reason, he just has to turn to you.
âMy deepest condolences, Y/N. Letâs have tea to catch up next time, yeah?â Unable to grasp the situation, he reaches out to place a hand on your cheek, a smile on his face, before he arches his back straight again to bid Alexander goodbye.
In that moment, you stand, though itâs only because staying on that couch feels disgusting now having to sit still and do nothing when he reached out to touch you. You hate the touch, it burns you, but you remain silent when you stand a little behind Alexander, nodding Karl goodbye, and only once he leaves does the room feel a little easier to breathe in.
Just a little.
.
.
.
âShould I call Mingyu?â Jungkook asks when you return to the room Alexander prepared for you that first night you met him. He watches you with keen eyes and observance as you walk further into the room, away from the door, eyes still refusing to look anyone in the eyes, silent with a blank expression. âOr..should I leave the room?â
You donât give him an answer but youâre thinking.
How far is it from here to the manor Namjoon prepared for you? A couple of minutes away by vehicle, which means it wouldnât be that difficult for him to come here. But him coming here would mean a hassle because then youâd have to let the people here know that Mingyuâs one of yours and you donât feel like interacting with anyone right now. A letter in your handwriting wouldnât suffice either because they donât know your handwriting.
You could honestly call Ester and describe Mingyuâs face to tell her heâs with you but that would mean interacting.
Jungkook could leave the room and yet the thought of him leaving gives a small dread in the pits of your stomach because you hate being alone and left in an unfamiliar place and right now heâs the only thing thatâs familiar to you.
Familiar.
How funny that this familiar person left you to fend for yourself and gave you his cold shoulders when you needed him most.
And yet thereâs no other choice.
So just like back in London when you familiarized yourself with Seokjinâs warmth and kindness for that split second, you turn around to face Jungkook.
He stands far from you, having not moved from the door since the two of you walked in, and a part of you hates that despite what heâs done to you, you know Jungkook is a man with natural kindness and would never do anything that would harm you on purpose. You see it in the way he keeps his distance, in the two questions he asked, how he doesnât try to approach you, that unlike Karl who doesnât know how to take a hint, he understands your fear of being touched by men even though you did allow Yoongi to hold you and poked Seokjin slightly on the shoulder.
He respects your boundaries. He always had, he always did.
So why did it have to end with him giving you the cold shoulders and pretending he hated you? Why did things have to turn out the way it did?
Youâre so tired. Tired of everything.
âCome here,â you call for him, and you hate how even when you give him permission to come close, he still hesitates, concerned for the state of your mind.
When he approaches, his steps are slow, and once heâs inches away from you, you hold out the palm of your hand.
âI want you to help me with something,â you say, âyou donât have to do much, just..stay still andâŠand give me your hand.â
His brows are knitted, eyes staring down at your palm as if this isnât a good idea. âIâm sorry,â he tells you, feeling conflicted. âHoseok should have been here, we should have switched places. He wouldâve been a better choice inââ
âI know Hoseok would have been the better choice but we canât turn back time now can we?!â Your patience is starting to wear thin and when he flinches a little at the way you raise your voice, your own eyes widen at what youâd just done. Shocked at how easy it was to lose control, and when you begin to spiral out of fear for raising your voice at him, you put your hands in your hair, trembling.
âIâm sorry, please justâŠjust help me, Jungkook. You have to replace what he did. I hate it, I hate his touch, and right now Iâd rather feel your touch than his so pleaseâŠplease?â You look up at him, not caring that youâre pleading and looking desperate.
When he sees it, sees the way your eyes gloss over with a glaze of water, at your panicked tone and your begging for his help, he gives you his hand.
You take it and press his palm onto your cheek, over that burning feeling from where Karl touched you, and the peace that you yearned for doesnât come right away. You struggle for a bit and your legs almost give in from the weakness but Jungkookâs right there to hold you up and bring you over to the bed so that you donât have to rely on your legs.Â
He remains standing before you, watching as you rest your eyes while keeping his hand pressed to your skin.
It takes some time for the storm to wash away and for the calm to walk over but it comes, eventually, and when it does come, it isnât in the way it is with Mingyu. Jungkook doesnât give you the sort of calm that your second in command gives you, though you expected it because no one can replace Mingyuâs warmth.
The sort of calm Jungkook gives you follows with pain and grief over what had been lost all those years ago.
His warmth, his presence, his puppy-like self following you around, willing to do anything and everything for you. Heâd always been such a quiet man who follows the rules well, who does everything with great effort, who is sometimes too naive and gets roped up in Jiminâs antics and gets scolded for things he didnât do.
Always there to lend you his jacket when you shivered in the slightest way, always there to protect you from anyone that bothered you, noticing the smallest things, and though you relied on him for a lot of things, he relied on you in turn as well.
You understood him in ways the others couldnât, the two of you in love like those two innocent little kids who were finding out what it meant to love someone for the first time. Soft and gentle, a bit awkward and clumsy.
âThey didnât have the drink that you like but I got youâŠâ He walks back with a hand holding onto a glass of something for you to drink, but in the middle of his sentence, Jungkookâs expression falls. â...Something happened.â
Immediately, heâs shifting his head around to try and find who it was that approached you tonight but before he can get too far, youâre grabbing ahold of his arm and pulling his attention back on you.Â
âItâŠnothing happened,â you insist with a bit of panic on your expression, afraid of what Jungkook might do out in public like this, all the while trying to see if you can catch of glimpse of Namjoon anywhere on the floor. Thankfully he isnât around, otherwise heâd be able to also tell something was wrong with one look your way.
There are days when hiding your emotions are easy and there are other days when itâs a little more difficult. Like on the days when people make you uncomfortable and you just canât seem to hide it well. Those days are hard.
And Jungkook, who looks back at you, clearly doesnât buy your little protest. âY/N, I need you to just point outââ
âPlease.â You squeeze his biceps, holding yourself close to him, pleading with your eyes as you look up at him, and Jungkook immediately recognizes just what those eyes are trying to tell him;
âDonât leave me alone.â
Youâre frightened, he realizes, and after a small look around the room to check his surrounding, he brings you in close to him and keeps you by his side as he takes your hand and brings you around to an empty space where the two of you can be left alone together.
âIs there anything you need?â Is the first thing he asks you as he sits you down on a seat in the empty room, but you simply shake your head and squeeze his hand tight.
âJust you,â you say in a quiet voice, and Jungkook stays with you that night without ever leaving your side, all the while you simply hold onto the touch of his hand, the feel of it a comfort unlike any other.
His touch reminds you of those memories, of the past and the tears and the smiles, and though you hate the pain that it resurfaces, youâd rather revel in this pain than the pain of remembering the memories with Karl.

â PART 24 / previous post / masterpost
Itâs about one in the morning when you sneak out of the room with gentle steps, making sure to not wake the one who sleeps on the armchair beside the bed, his soft little snores still heard until his presence disappears with the closed door.
The hallways are as silent as it was back in the room, the only thing heard is the sounds of your footsteps echoing through, and as you close your shawl closer to your body, you look around to make your way to the familiar steps that lead outside where the greenhouse stands.
The doors are left unlocked so you let yourself in and step through the glass doors, closing your eyes for a moment to breathe in the scent of the greens all around you.
Itâs during lonely moments like this you feel your heart craving for some sort of familiarity. Not just the presence of your Reapers but for the presence of your manor itself.
For years you spent hating that place more than anything because that was where everything happened; where you were born, where you grew up, watching your mother hating you with every fiber left in her, chasing after your fatherâs attention, shedding tears on top of gentle shoulders, trapped behind the steel door of a white room, training, meeting good people, meeting bad people, everything.
Everything.
You canât recall when the feeling of dread and disdain turned to eyes seeking for it, feet yearning to step back into it. Maybe it was the moment your father died, when the dynasty he worked so hard to build broke down into pieces like a house of cards, when you took over and made it into the home that it is now starting to feel like.
You returned to it after Leehyun, locking yourself in the comfort of your room, knowing that if you were to step outside, your Reapers would be right there with the smallest calling of their names. It served as your escape when it used to be the very reason you hated your existence.
The manor has become home and perhaps the only reason itâs able to be such a thing is because of what youâve built it to be.
You want to escape, to return to it and simply hide in it and have no one bother you until youâre ready to step out yourself.
On the bench where Alexander sat this morning, you take your seat and close your eyes, trying to manipulate your mind into thinking you arenât in Norway, that youâre back in Seoul, back at the manor, and not somewhere far, far away.
Itâs exhausting doing this, your revenge plan. Itâs exhausting having to put up a front, exhausting having to freeze up and recall unwanted memories that you wish could bury forever in the back of your mind.
But buried memories canât always stay buried. They return, eventually, in time, whether youâre prepared or not.
You canât tell how much time has passed but when you feel something against your feet accompanied by small little pants, you open your eyes to find the little puppy that accepted you from the moment he laid eyes on you.
You look down at him and he returns your gaze with a tilt in his head, tail wagging, and swirls about in a circle once before using his nose to poke at your leg again. He reminds you of the children at The Academy, how theyâve never been scared of you despite wanting to always push them away with your cold demeanor. Itâs like Kiwi sees right through you, just like them, and in your silence, you pick up the small little thing to bring him onto your lap.
His tail wags a little more and when you run your hand through his fur, he gets a little more excited and affectionate.
Besides the children, thereâs someone else you see in him.
âYou remind me of someone,â you say as he nuzzles into the feeling of your palm. âThough unlike you, he wasnât too fond of me in the beginning. It took some time for him to warm up but once he got to that point, he wouldnât stop following me around.â
You fall silent again, thinking, remembering, reminiscing, and your fingers stop playing around with the little puppy on your lap.
The memories arenât as hazy as they used to be, theyâre a little clearer, a little closer to home. You can feel it in your heart when something feels like itâs just stabbed it, and in your stomach when you feel a little drop.
âIâm sorry for being selfish,â a voice whispers into your ear. âIâm sorry for only ever thinking about myself.â
But the thing about that is, you cannot be sorry for something that is within your nature, you cannot be sorry for wanting to put yourself first in a cruel, cruel world. When everything feels wrong, when the world feels like itâs always against you, when you do not know who to put your trust in.
If you were a little more mature and a little more brave, would you have been able to tell him the things you want to say now?
Things like; it wasnât your fault. Things like; itâs alright, and youâre okay, and rest well.
Rest well, rest well, rest well.
You lean your head forward to the sky, gaze closed, as if hoping the things you spoke within your heart could be heard from him wherever he stays.
And as the silence continues, you feel your consciousness eventually slip away as your shoulders loosen their tensions with the feel of the little puppy resting well in your lap.
You didnât realize it, that you had fallen asleep, but you know yourself waking when you feel a presence closing in and immediately opening your eyes to meet the old man who has a blanket hovered before you, his eyes falling a little surprised because he hadnât expected you to wake up so easily.
âItâs good to put your guard down a little, you know,â Alexander says with a small chuckle as you accept the blanket to drape it behind you.
âIâve learned my lesson with that,â you answer him and scoot over to the edge of the bench in order to make room for him.
He takes his seat beside you though leaves enough space in between and youâre thankful this man is observant. Kiwiâs awake but remains quiet and still, head resting against his paws with his tail swaying side to side.
âDo you have anyone you can trust in this world?â Alexander crosses a leg over the other and you look at your watch to see that itâs about four in the morning.
You managed to sleep in an unfamiliar place while knowing there werenât any Reapers that could come to you at any second. How odd.
âThere are always chances someone can stab you in the back.â Maybe the presence of Kiwi helped you. âItâs never a good idea to put your full trust in anyone.â
âYou say that but one day you might come to know it feels rather nice putting unconditional faith in someone.â
You shake your head, brows furrowing. âEven if that someone has a good heart and good intentions, it doesnât mean it hurts any less.â
Thereâs only been one person you know you can truly trust but heâs gone from this world, only ever being able to see him again when he wishes to visit you in your dreams. Heâs the only person youâd ever allow to hurt you over and over again, even if it isnât the real version of him.
Mister Butler can hate you and betray you but youâd let him do it again and again and maybe thatâs because in your heart, you know those versions that the nightmares give you are simply from your own imagination and that heâd never truly come to hate you. Heâs incapable of betraying your trust. Someone like him, who stayed by your side when he didnât have to, isnât a man who can have his heart easily swayed into hating you.
âAre you tired of betrayal?â
âIâm tired of everything,â you admit and he looks at you up and down, eyes narrowing slightly.
âAnd yet here you are, out in Norway.â Alexander knows a thing or two, he isnât dumb, and you arenât someone to think otherwise. He wouldnât be in the position he is now if he was, and you donât deny what he implies in his words. âYou run straight into the very things that make you tired.â
âBecause it is the only way I can feel alive.â You look on straight ahead before you, watching the pretty sky that pokes out from behind the plants of the greenhouse. âOtherwise Iâd be in my room, rotting away. There is no purpose in running away, there is no purpose in leaving things be. My father did not leave this world for me to simply carry on as if he never existed.â
Some may take that as you carrying on your fatherâs legacy and whatever Alexander is thinking, you donât care too much for it because all it matters is what you know. You didnât kill your father just to stay silent for the rest of your life. His death was the beginning of everything.
Your turning point.
âAnd no one can stop a mind thatâs already been made up.â Alexander nods, understanding, and doesnât push for answers, but perhaps in the back of his mind, heâs a little curious about you and your goals and aspirations in this life. What drives you, what made you into the sort of person you are today, but Alexander is wise unlike many old men youâve met throughout your life, so he doesnât question things beyond your boundary.
And so he diverts the subject once again, turning it to the puppy in your lap.
âPerhaps you should adopt a pet of your own, to help you ease your mind a little,â he tells you with a fond gaze at Kiwi. âHumans can be quite disappointing, but a loyal pet will stay loyal for the rest of its life. Not to mention theyâre the greatest comfort when someone needs it.â
Maybe thatâs true. Maybe you should turn to a dog rather than humans in your time of need. Humans are disappointing creatures after all. But, âItâs too much of a hassle,â you say. âI canât even take care of my own self properly, itâd be unwise of me to try and take care of another being.â
â...Is that so?â
It becomes a daily occurrence; the talks in the greenhouse, and soon you come to realize that Alexander isnât one to let just anyone into his greenhouse. The doors that are usually locked during hours when one should be asleep are kept open, and perhaps thatâs because heâs come to realize that you donât sleep a lot, at least not in the house of a stranger, so he leaves them open for you to visit when you need your space.
And in the morning, around four or five AM when he awakens, heâll come along and strike up a conversation and the two of you will speak about the things he brings up. Things like Seoul and of the Reaper gang, sometimes heâll ask of Master Kitagawa, other times heâll ask how far your skills go.
You speak to him in vague terms, careful not to tell him everything, but he comes to know that you were an only child, married once in an arranged marriage, but divorced. He doesnât seem too surprised by that fact probably because everyone knows this happens all the time.
And in him knowing a little more about you, you come to know a little more about him as well.
Like when Kiwi came into his life and the fact that heâs had other pets throughout his lifetimes before but theyâve all died and left him.
You asked him why he continues adopting pets when he knows they donât live as long as humans do, why he hurts himself over and over again, but he simply smiles and says that sometimes being able to love is better than being lonely. That it doesnât matter how many times he has to watch them die and that heâd never regret loving them.
Alexander believes in reincarnation, that the souls of his first puppy dies and returns in the form of the other pets heâs had, so heâs never truly lonely, and something about that, believing in such a thing, though it sounds a bit absurd, is a little bit beautiful in its own way.
If you could believe Mister Butler died and returned through someone else, itâd be a nice delusion to live in, and despite the fact that there have been one or two guys that have reminded you of him, the truth is, no one can ever be Mister Butler.
Not Hoseok. Not Mingyu.
Because Mister Butler is like family. He was.Â
Through your marriage with Namjoon, he was your older brother, but he always felt closer to a father figure to you, and perhaps thatâs because your father was never there for you. Mingyu is closer to an older brother. A companion. A friend.
And Hoseok?
The one that got away.
The right person at the wrong time.
And because of that fact, you donât allow yourself to be near him for too long, hence denying his companionship when Jungkook told you itâd probably be better if Hoseok were standing guard at your side rather than him.
Itâs true, Hoseok would be better. You wouldnât be as cautious towards him as you are of Jungkook, but itâs that exact reason that you cannot let him near.
You cannot let him shake your core, so you endure what you can and let Jungkook stay near you despite the constant reminder of what he did all those years ago.
Itâs not entirely his fault but as youâve said, it doesnât hurt any less.
In your time getting closer to Alexander, heâs refused the appearance of Karl several times. Asher says if he has to, his grandfather will meet him elsewhere. Just not in the house. The guy has come to guess that youâre here because of Karl, and if heâs guessed it, maybe Alexander has too.
Though the old man never brings it up despite the plenty of chances during your greenhouse talks.
âAny progress?â
Dawn remains in the sky as ever and while Jungkook sleeps, you sit on the windowsill to take a call from the other side of the world. Itâs a bit chilly to head out today so you stay indoors this time, making sure to keep your voice low.
âPlenty. Itâs been quite peaceful these days, it feels a bit out of place.â Alexanderâs kindness wasnât something you expected the first day you walked into Norway. You expected things to be harder after meeting Asher but surprisingly, things are quiteâŠeasy, to say the least. âI have a feeling it wonât last too long.â
âNo?â Namjoon sounds a little confused on his end. âWhy do you say that? Should we come over earlier than planned?â
âNo, donât do that. Come as scheduled,â you say and look away from the window to the man whoâs moved from sleeping on the armchair to the bed. It took some time to convince him initially but eventually Jungkook agreed to take the bed since you donât really sleep anyway.
âYou have something planned, donât you?â Thereâs some suspicion in his voice and you want to laugh a little at how things are right now.
Who would have thought youâd be back on speaking terms with the man you thought youâd push away for good? But here he is, back and ready to give you his trust. You donât know if heâs smart or stupid or both. Maybe thereâs a bit of both, but it probably took some time for him to consider it, being as the whole thing was about his brother whom he loves very dearly.
Namjoonâs finally using his head.
Though you arenât too sure if you like it so much.
âMaybe I do, maybe I donât.â
âY/N.â
âItâs nothing bad.â
âI donât know if I can trust those words so easily. The last time you left the country, you disregarded your life just for that plan of yours.â
âListen.â You roll your eyes. âIâll be fine.â
Thereâs a pause on his end before he speaks again. âYou didnât assure me that you wonât do something reckless,â he notes and you internally click your tongue, âwhich means that feeling of the peace not lasting for long is you actively causing that to happen.â When you donât respond, he goes on. âWill you stop being so secretive and let me know what youâre thinking? Maybe then you wonât be in the same position you were with Leehyun, and me and my boys and the Reapers will know how to help you.â
Well.
âYou canât keep hiding, Y/N. Stop being so reckless, youâre too reckless.â
âWatch me.â
He lets out a heavy sigh. âThat wasnât a challenge.â
âNo?â
Another sigh and he knows he canât win. âJustâŠif you decide itâs better for me to go over sooner rather than later, let me know. Iâll be waiting. Right here, just a phone call away.â
â...Sure.â
You donât think too much about it. You donât want to think too much about it.Â
So when the cloud gives way to the sun and it shines higher in the sky, you finally take up Karlâs request to have tea and catch up, deciding you shouldnât keep running away from what youâre trying to face.
You have Yeonjun stay by your side this time, rather than Jungkook, in case Karl says something out of line and Jungkook will hear more things than you want him to. You stay in the garden of Alexanderâs mansion, keeping a little distance away from the building itself, and with the feel of eyes from a window behind you, the conversation begins.
âI remember him,â Karl points at your escort when he takes his first sip of the tea. âJun? Joon?â Yeonjun doesnât make an effort to fix him and simply remains quiet. âRight, never one to talk but always by your side.â His eyes settle back on you, a small glint of mirth in them. âYou have quite the loyal companion.â
âYes..I do.â You ignore his gaze to take a sip of your own tea, keeping your replies short.
âIâm still a bit hurt you didnât reach out to me about your fatherâs death. We were good friends, you knew that.â
Of course you did. âI apologize, it slipped my mind.â
âSlipped your mind?â He raises a brow, unconvinced. âHmmâŠand here I thought, I left a good impression in those four months I stayed in Seoul.â
You did.Â
You did indeed leave an impression that will last a lifetime.
âMaybe I should have tried harder?â
That mirth in his eyes. Again.
You want to punch him.
âHow did he die though? The man I knew isnât someone who would have easily died and he would have updated me about his health had he fallen ill.â
âHe was betrayed,â you say, not batting an eye, and Karl puts his cup down after hearing that.
His eyes are blown out. âYour father? Betrayed? And he didnât see that coming?â
âThey were smart.â
âEven still..â He canât believe it, though you donât blame him too much. The father you both know is not someone whoâs easily trusting of others, therefore heâs always right there to pick out someone who will betray him before they can execute their plan.Â
Thatâs why it took so long to manipulate him into believing you were a daughter full on worshiping his ground without an ounce of betrayal in your veins. Thatâs why your masterful plan took so long. You had to convince your father into believing he had won in manipulating you to his side when all along, you had been waiting to stab him in the back. Facing a man like him, smart, calculating, a manipulating gaslighter who thinks the world centers around him requires more than just simple brains and planning.
It took years to execute your plans and even then you feel like you could have done better with everything. For one, not letting anyone see what had happened, aka Bangtan. But whatâs done is done. Dwelling on past mistakes is just stupid and a waste of time.
âAnd what about you?â When Karl points the finger at you, his gaze narrows, brows slightly furrowed. âYouâre his daughter, his perfect little doll. You didnât see that someone was plotting your fatherâs death? Is it not your job to protect him?â
âThatâs right,â you give him nothing to fight against, just simply accepting the accusations placed upon you. âI failed in protecting him. I am an incompetent daughter who should have done better.â
Karl stands up, running a hand through his hair. âYour father did all that he could for you and still, youââÂ
When he looks at you again and meets the gaze you send him, his word stops mid-sentence. Your stare isnât threatening, it isnât a glare, nor one that is meant to scare him off, yet something in them lies a hidden threat either way, were he to continue speaking. Karl, seeing that, lets out a chuckle and he closes in on you, patting you on the shoulder before simply leaving his hand there.
You look at it for a second before giving him the attention he wants as he leans in, nose inches away from you.
âYour father created you into the weapon that you are today, my dear little Y/N, and youâve even been trained under Kitagawa, so why is it that you failed to protect him? Huh? Tell me.â
From the corner of your eye, Yeonjun moves slightly closer, though he keeps his distance and doesnât dare to make a move unless you instruct him otherwise.
The breath against your face, the touch of skin burning through the thin cloth of your dress, the sides of your knees meeting one another, back straightening up, heels rising from the ground, fingers intertwined into each other, sitting on your lap.
You keep your eyes open, meeting his gaze, but internally youâre counting in your head and holding your breath, hearing the beat of your heart that might as well rip through your rib cages and past the barrier of your skin to physically beat widely before Karl himself.
Maybe he hears it, maybe he can feel it, but whether he does or not, he has no will to move away from you and you know Karl, he isnât dumb. He knows exactly the effect he has on you right now. He saw it, knows just how you felt all those weeks ago when you were in the living room and he touched you.
He knows and doesnât care one bit.
Just as he was all those years ago.
They never change.
âWhat is it that you want from me, Karl?â He doesnât fix you into calling him uncle this time. âDo you want me to repent on my knees and beg for forgiveness? My fatherâs already six feet underground, itâs not as if heâll hear me now, but as his close friend, if you wish for me to do just that, I will. Just for you.â
Thereâs malice in his eyes, a scoff that leaves him when he watches you, and finally, he moves back. Just a little. âYouâve gotten quite bold, havenât you? Now that your father isnât here to teach you a lesson.â
âAnd if I have? What will you do about it?â You push back, leaning forward, challenging him despite your body screaming at you to run away. âGo ahead and do whatever youâd like with me, thereâs no one here right now that can stop you. I can tell Yeonjun to pluck his eyes out right now and heâll do just that. He wonât say a word and he wonât move unless I tell him otherwise.â
At the mention of the boy, Karl looks over between you and him, and then something in him lights up slightly as if heâd just remembered something. As if heâd just realized something.
âThatâs right...what loyal companionsâŠâ He steps back, releasing your shoulder, and tilts his head back as he laughs obnoxiously. âIs this all about that little boy I messed with? Him?â The laugh rings a little louder, a little more crazed. âYou pretend youâre so cold and have no feelings and yet here you are, chasing after me all the way from Seoul, just for a boy, the second you got the chance. If your father were still here, he wouldnât have let that happen, but now that heâs goneâŠ-â
He pauses again, and after hurling over laughing, stands back up straight again as the laugh dies all too abruptly. So you stand up from your seat, the corner of your lip curling over as you notice just why heâs gone silent.
By now the tea is slowly getting cold but you donât care much for it as you stand tall, hands held together before you in a formal manner.
âThe person who betrayed himâŠâ His eyes narrow. âWho was it?â
âOh uncle,â you mock that title, mirth in your eyes, âI think you know exactly where that answer lies.â
Danger.
Something screams danger when his gaze darkens in realization.
And yet you seem to only be attracted to danger as it is the only thing youâve ever gotten used to seeing every day. The danger of being born as a mafia heir, married to a mafia powerhouse, spiraled into a hellhole you cannot ever seem to escape so you run towards it.
Directly into the fire.
Into the danger.
Provoking your enemies, knowing exactly just what their reactions will be, because danger seems to be the one thing in your life that will never leave and abandon you out of nowhere. The only thing you can forever trust to catch you were you to fall blindly into it.
And blindly you fall, trusting it to come.
And comes it goes, directly your way.
Never disappointing.
Never disappointing.
Namjoon called you reckless and for the first time in forever, you might have to agree with him. Because being reckless means not caring for the consequences to come after committing a rash action. The reckless ones do not care what happens to them, they live off adrenaline, they run towards the fire when everyone else runs away.
Towards the danger despite knowing there will always be a chance they may not survive. Unheeding, stubborn, thoughtless, careless, negligent, imprudent. Unwise, unwary, incautious, hasty.
A fool.
A fool.
A fool.
But misguided and left on their own. Lonely, abandoned, hurt, isolated, rejected, forsaken. An outcast and unloved, a disappointment and broken.
Broken.
A broken little soul whose heart lies empty with a hole pierced through the middle.
You are reckless. You are broken.
And broken things do not know how to save themselves, they only know the warmth of the fire. That is the only thing they can rely on.
So you stay within his vicinity, within Karlâs reach, watching, simply standing there, keeping still, as if keeping vigil. Like youâre just waiting, just expecting for something, anything, the inevitable, to happen. And when it comes in the form of a harsh, harsh slap across the face that has your body turning over to the side and having to hold onto the table to keep your balance, you canât even say that you are surprised.
It feels like being in the presence of your father all over again, in the face of danger, of a manipulator, of a gaslighter, of an abuser.
He returns hard and so vividly in the form of anger, in the form of a ghost, a spirit whom you see standing right behind Karl. He stands as still as ever, hands held behind his back, simply watching.
Watching.
While you stand before him in front of a man heâs using to command orders over him. Using violence through others because father never raises his hands, father never puts in the effort or strength or power into physical forms. He does it through others, he commands through others, he hurts through others.
Watching until heâs satisfied.
But heâs never satisfied. Heâs never satisfied.
And on your end, you can do nothing but accept it all willingly.
There is nothing else you can do, there is nothing else that can be done. It is like being in his presence all over again. Yeonjun, the Reapers behind you, standing still, told to not do a thing, to not move an inch, and your father behind the violence, keeping silent with a deadly gaze.
You return to the past.
You see him.
Heâs right there.
And Karl raises his hand again.

Previous Chapter - Masterlist

Namjoon sleeps for the next 10 hours.
Heâs been awake for almost twice that long by the time his body finally relaxes against the nest. Sour clothes changed and his pack watching nervously trying to guess at how far along he is into pre-rut.
The blankets in the nest are fluffy but not at all right and it makes namjoon want to cry. Thereâs something about it that sets an itch down his neck. The discomfort eased by kisses pressed to his sleepy form, his shoulders aching from being in one position for nearly 20 hours. Sweet nuzzles against his throat relax his body, substantially soothed.
The wrongness is something for future Namjoon to handle. This one just needs to rest. The pinch to the back of his neck takes the edge off, that and Jinâs command of sleep. sleep alpha- weâll be here when you wake has Namjoon melting into the covers.
While he rests his body grows sorer. Nose itching more sensitive by the moment. His blood and heart pumping quicker, adrenaline readying itself for the hunt.Â
His nose twitches in his sleep and his scent spikes gradually; first itâs warm coffee like normal, then like a heady wave that fills the nest room and then the house. Pushing out all other scents until itâs all you can smell.
You wonder if by the time his rut hits, youâll feel like youâre drowning in it.

(Ache)
Namjoonâs rut lasts for 3 nights and 4 days.
Itâs quiet like drowning when you stir in the living room nest. A thick blanket of rut hormones sticking and burning in your mouth and nose. The milder smell of slick bright. Jungkookâs and Jinâs. Both. You have no idea when exactly Namjoonâs pre-rut broke only that youâre in the thick of it now.
You feel oddly cold. A strip of skin around your middle where your shirts pulled up vaguely bereft. Almost like there had been someone wrapped around you in the night.Â
You donât know what woke you until you hear it- the fast wet sound of two bodies thumping against one another.

â PART 25 / previous post / masterpost
One.
Two.
Three.
The seconds will pass. The minutes will fly. The hours will go.
Youâre alright.
Endure it. Endure it.
It will pass.
Everything will pass just as everything has always passed.
In time, father will raise his hand to indicate them to stop. A stop signal. He may leave the room out of boredom but he will return just as he always does in order to demand them to leave you alone. He will never be satisfied but there is always a limit to everything and father sometimes gets too bored to keep seeing it, to keep hearing it, so heâs always there to stop it.
Eventually.
Eventually.
You just have to endure it for now until the signal comes, untilâ
âWhat are you doing?!â
You didnât realize it and perhaps thatâs because you blacked out, your mind keeping you from feeling it all completely, trying to protect you, but youâre sitting on the ground when a call demands out an answer in a loud, commanding voice, and a rushing of a pair of feet running over to push Karl off you.
Asher punches Karl right in the face, throwing him off you, before demanding the guards he has with him to hold the man back.
âShe provoked me!â Karl argues like a child in a kidâs play.
Heâs never been abruptly stopped before. Always angry, never satisfied.
Nothing is ever enough when it comes to the two of them.Â
Karl landing hurt through his fists and weapons and anything he can get a hand on. Your father landing hurt through his commands, watching and watching and watching.
And you, their victim, who has to stay down and accept it all until there is a small amount of satisfaction that calls at them to stop.
You always wait on that call, no matter how much endurance it takes.
âThat doesnât make it right to lay your hand on a woman!â Asher retorts with anger laced in his tone, and this anger, despite how different it is from that of Karlâs, still shakes you violently though you keep as still as ever, paralyzed.
Paralyzed.
Even when the anger does not fall on you, even when he does not turn to you but towards the companion who stands behind you, who had stood still this whole time. âAnd what are you doing? Your boss was getting hit and you just stood there?â
Yeonjun, with a snap on cue, kneels over to your side and looks down at you with widened eyes and a frozen expression. He doesnât touch you right away, cautious, but you see what those eyes mean, you know exactly what that expression is telling you.
That he, too, had reverted back to the past.
When your father still lived, when he had to stand by and watch everything without moving a muscle.
He reverted back just as you had.
Two little kids, who're still affected by the traumas of the past.
Two little kids.
You take Yeonjunâs hand, giving him the permission to touch you, so he helps you back onto your feet and the two of you remain in silence as you walk off with his help, not daring to look Karl in the eyes, not caring to reply to Asher.
But you feel yourself trembling with the presence of a pair of eyes boring right into your back. Not from Asher or Karl or the two guards but from someone else.
The ghost of him.
Of that man.
That man named father.
.
.
.
âY/N?â Thereâs concern in Jungkookâs voice when you walk into the room and you guess thatâs probably because of the state youâre in, but right now you canât entertain him so you simply hold a hand up, asking him to stay back, and Jungkook, though worried, leaves the room on your behalf.
When youâre left alone with Yeonjun, you let your legs give in to sit on the floor rather than finding a chair or taking a seat on the bed.
The floor is comfortable. Itâs always been more comfortable.
The boy takes your heels off, along with your jacket, and despite the sting of the pain that aches over your body, the only thing on your mind is the fact that you let it happen so easily, that you allowed yourself to walk back into that state of being an obedient and perfect little doll.
You reverted back to the damages just when you thought after fatherâs death, you wouldnât let anyone walk over you anymore.
But it isnât easy.
It isnât easy.
And it will never be easy.
Father still lives in your head rent free and thereâs nothing you can do about it. No matter how much time has passed, nothing will change. Itâs already been a little over a year since his death but heâs still here, still thriving, mocking you, taunting you, controlling everything that you are.
Youâre shaking, trembling, not just out of fear but out of anger. Angry at yourself. For being so weak, for reverting back, for thinking things could get better.
And with Yeonjun the only one here with you at the moment, you lean into his touch and let yourself into his arms to allow the sort of warmth only your Reapers can provide you.
Yeonjunâs heartbeat wonât be the same as Mingyuâs, itâs probably even beating rapidly right now, so you donât let your ear rest against his chest and instead wrap your arms over his neck and climb into his lap to lay your cheek against his shoulder.
Yeonjun brings his hand over to rub down your back but heâs a little awkward and unsure because heâs never really had to do this; comforting you. Itâs always been Mingyu, and if Mingyu wasnât there, itâd be Yuna, and if Yuna couldnât do it, itâd be Dasom, or someone else.
Anyone else.
Heâs only a kid after all, just eighteen years old, the youngest of your Reapers, but because no one else is here, he does his best to pick up the role thatâs been given unto him.
Yet you feel him tremble slightly himself and you guess that in some way, he must be afraid as well.
âIâm sorry,â he whispers to you. âI didnâtâŠIâŠâ
You know what heâs trying to say, that he failed you, that he couldnât protect you. But can you really blame him? Because just as youâve been trained to endure through the pains and take everything thatâs given unto you, Yeonjun, the Reapers, were trained to stand by and watch.
Habits are scary.
Frightening.
And because you donât know how to console him and he doesnât know how to console you, the two of you remain in silence simply holding onto one another.
Just two little kids having to rely on each other.
Just two little kids.
And after a little while, when things have settled a little more, when he starts shaking a little less, Yeonjun gathers himself and forces himself out of the state heâs in.
He stands up and you watch him leave for a second, not too long, because he rushes, and returns with materials in hand to begin tending to you. It remains as quiet as ever between the two of you, but you see the way his brows furrow in concentration and he stops himself from staying in the mindset of a teenager.
Of a child.
He becomes an adult, a reliable adult. For you. Applying whatâs needed on the bruises that have swelled up, wrapping your arm with bandages, and when you frown with disgust at the sight of the white wrapping on you, wanting it off, complaining, he doesnât fall into your trap and stands his ground just as heâs seen Mingyu do plenty of times.
Yeonjun gets frightened of you at times but he always listens to your every command and does all that you ask him within a heartbeat, but today he grows a pair of wings and knocks you lightly on the head with his knuckles when you try to push him away, when you get stubborn with him.
âDo you want to die?â You glare at him but he doesnât give in.
âYou can kill me after I treat you,â he says and continues his ministrations.
âI hate it,â you tell him. âI donât like it, thisâŠthis white.â You try to scratch at yourself but he grabs your hand before you can and your face scrunches up with anguish. âGet it off me.âÂ
You tug the pearls on your neck and it scatters onto the floor but you donât care and move on to the white dress, yet Yeonjun stops you once more.
âYouâll hurt yourself.â
âIâm not weak.â
âI never said you were.â And because he knows the signs, because heâs seen it plenty of times in you, he grabs the sleeve, rips it, then the hem of the dress, and tears that as well without doing too much. âSee? Look. Imperfect.â You hate perfect things and seeing that, the tears of the dress, alleviate a bit of your drumming heartbeat, so Yeonjun grabs a pair of scissors to start cutting off bits of your dress.
All your life youâve been told to be perfect, that everything you do must be under the command of your father. He made you into his perfect little doll, his perfect little weapon, prepared you for the battlefield, prepared you for war.
For the war that he brought, for the war that was his.
Or rather, he was the war itself.
You are a weapon, and weapons do not weep. Weapons are used and weapons do not run off on their own. Weapons are perfect, they fire at the command of their owner, theyâre silent when told, and left to waste if they do not do their job.
Youâve never wanted to be left to waste, youâve never wanted to be dropped back into an empty room, the White Room, and never picked up again.
âI look broken,â you utter a whisper as if shocked at the image of yourself when you look down at the mess of your dress and the white bandages on your body. Your brows are knitted, teeth grinding on each other, fingers dug into the skin of your palm, eyes red but as always, they refuse to cry.
Because weapons do not weep.
And Yeonjun, for a second, almost panics, thinking he did something wrong, but in Mingyuâs wise words, âJust because it looks like I know what Iâm doing when it comes to boss does not mean that is the truth. It is far from the truth. There are times when it feels like Iâve messed up, times when Iâm about to panic because she responds differently from what I imagined, but you cannot ever show her that you do not know what youâre doing. Ever. Just pretend when youâre in that position, and if youâre good at pretending, she wonât know a thing,â Yeonjun quickly pulls himself back up.
âYou donât look broken,â he puts the scissors down and takes your two trembling fists. âYou look imperfect.â
You look imperfect.
Imperfect.
It does the trick.
He sees the way the crease between your brows starts to soften, how your clenched jaw loosens, the way you let him help your fingers unravel from the strength they held digging into yourself, and how your shoulders fall a bit from being so hunched up.
âI look imperfect?â You ask him, eyes wide and puppy-like, darting right to him and though they shake slightly, they look towards him for an answer, for reassurance, to detect any lie, to seek for the truth. But also pleading, also begging for him to say just that.
Even if the lie must disguise itself as the truth.
âYou do,â so Yeonjun lies skillfully. âYou look imperfect, boss.â
Thereâs a breath of relief, quiet and subtle, and it comes in a whisper just barely there. Yeonjun keeps you close and presses a palm to your chest, just where your heartbeat strums.
âNow count,â he tells you. âMingyu says counting is good, right? Count until he gets here.â
âIs he coming?â You ask when he takes both your hands to take over where his palm once lay.
âYes,â he lies again. He hasnât made the call yet. âSoon.â
âYou have to stay here.â
âI will.â
âNo one can come in.â
âI know.â
âDonât talk to him, donât let Karl anywhere near me.â
âI wouldnât dare.â
âIâm tired.â
âAlright, come here.â He pulls you in carefully into his lap, in his arms, and you let yourself be warmed and comforted in his arms once more, this time with your back pressed to his chest.
âI donât want to sleep,â you tell him. âThe nightmaresâŠtheyâll come. Heâll come. Heâll visit. And heâll try to make me perfect all over again.â
He. Your father.
âI donât want to be perfect.â It isnât a command, itâs a plea. A desperate cry for help.
âThen donât sleep. But count the heartbeats, yeah? Count.â The soft lure of his voice, gentle, encouraging.
With hands still pressed against your chest, you let your ear tune out everything else in order to hear the beat of your heart so that you can start counting them.
One. Two. ThreeâŠ
Itâs fast and you know that you canât completely count every individual one of them but you try your best to simply concentrate on only that while your eyes stare out at the window a few feet away. The sun shines brightly from the opened curtains and thereâs a small little bird perched on the closest tree.
It jumps onto a branch and rests there with its head moving about in different directions.
There are pretty white clouds up above and one of the bigger ones shapes like a castle and you imagine fairies up there, hiding.
Thereâs another cloud that looks like a cat and another one shaped like a ghost.
The wind blows and your eyes turn back to the bird that flies off.
Thirty-three, thirty-four, thirty-fiveâŠ
Itâs slowing down, just slightly.
.
.
.
âI heard what happened this afternoon.â
Kiwi keeps you distracted as he nibbles with your finger. You canât recall when heâs decided to hang around you rather than his own master whenever youâre around but at least it gives you a reason to not look someone in the eyes.
âWould you like to tell me what happened from your perspective?â
Thirty-something years old. You canât even remember just how old you are but lately, it hasnât mattered in the slightest because you feel much younger than what you actually are. Like youâre twenty-something. Even a teen. It doesnât feel like youâve aged much.
Your birthday hasnât been celebrated since your time at the Bangtan manor but it doesnât really matter. Nothing really matters.
Because you feel like a kid back under the control of your father, having to do what youâre told, obeying his every command like someone who canât do anything on her own.
Under scrutiny.
âWhat did Karl tell you?â You pop a question of your own, eyes still unfocused, mind still trying to pretend youâre fine, that youâre okay in a room full of strangers.
Thereâs only one stranger but a stranger nonetheless.
âHe said you provoked him.â
âThatâs right.â You donât deny it and instead nod, expression blank so that Alexander cannot tell whatâs going on inside your head. And maybe he does, maybe all of this faking is futile because heâs so wise, but you donât care. You keep still, you keep vague, and you remain cold.
âIs that soâŠ?â He trails off, perhaps thinking, and you can feel his eyes never leaving you. âAnd what was it that you did to have provoked him?â
âI told him something he didnât like.â
âAnd whatâs that?â
âThat I killed his best friend.â
âAnd did you?â
âI did.â
âAnd who was that?â
âMy father.â
He pauses, perhaps because he hadnât expected that answer but youâre sure heâs thinking back on the moment when you first mentioned your father to him. The âstoryâ you gave him was that your father passed away and was a good friend of Karlâs, though you never mentioned anything else about it.Â
And now hereâs the answer; you killed him yourself.
âIs that why you let Karl do what he did?â He asks you. âBecause you thought you deserved the punishment for what you did? Some people may not regret their actions but theyâll let the person most affected do something against them. Was that how it was?â
No.
No, not at all.
You didnât let Karl hurt you because you knew heâd be hurt by what you did. You didnât let him hurt you because you thought he at least deserved to lash his anger out on you. Or that you felt bad. Or that you wanted some sort of punishment. Or that you were repenting.
You let Karl hurt you because youâd always let him hurt you, just as youâd always let everyone hurt you.
Because that was how it always was.
A habit.
Being the weaker one, being the one who would chant the words endure, endure because that was what was instilled in you from the moment Mister Butler died. You cannot get out of your habits that easily, you do not just get stronger because you vow to yourself you will.
You donât just get stronger and you certainly donât just decide âI wonât let anyone step over me anymoreâ and succeed on the first try.
Or the second try.
Or the third.
Even the tenth or hundredth time.
You let Karl hurt you because you were used to it and your body, remembering how it always was before your father died, returned to those habits.
The habits of staying still, the habits of enduring all that came at you.
âYes.â But you lie because what else is there to say? You lie because there is nothing else to say. Because you donât want to tell the truth. Because the truth means explaining and explaining means opening up and opening up means trusting and trusting never ends well.
You lie because you have to.
âThat is all there is to it.â You put Kiwi down onto the floor and stand up straight, making sure to look in the old manâs direction with your hands held together in a formal stance. âKarlâs story is the whole truth. I deserved what he did, for killing his best friend, for killing my father.â
His brows are furrowed and you sense doubt in his eyes but because he has no proof and because youâre not willing to share anything else with him, he canât push you too hard about the matter. âWhether that is the truth or not, do you really think a man much older and bigger has the right to hurt a woman younger and smaller in stature? Noââ he fixes his sentence, âdo you think a man is in his right to hurt a woman?â
âA man is capable of hurting anything that he wishes to hurt. He is in the power to do so.â
âYou are strong, Y/N.â He stands to meet your eyes, serious, calm, and collected, but thereâs a little twitch in his brows to indicate that he feels a bit frustrated by the situation. âYou are capable of dodging his attacks. Even if a man were much bigger and stronger than you, you have the brains to outsmart them. You donât look like someone who will easily let someone else step all over you.â
No. You are exactly just that. You are still the little girl you thought had changed. Youâre still weak.
âSo Iâll ask you again, Y/N; why did you let Karl hurt you?â
You hate feeling caged in and right now, despite the fact that only Alexander stands in this room, you feel eyes from all over. And maybe thatâs just you being paranoid, maybe youâre just making it all up in your head, but you hate every bit of it.Â
Every bit of this.
âI gave you my answer, take it with a grain of salt. Do not pretend to be on my side.â And with that, you turn your back to him and walk off without another word.
Alexander doesnât chase after you but you feel his eyes.
Itâs ironic the way youâre supposed to be the one trying to gain his favor and yet this happens; you pushing him away and putting up your walls. And Asher makes sure to remind you of that.
âIsnât the whole point of you being here to gain his favor?â
He stops you in the middle of the hall when youâre heading back to the guest room.
âWhy?â He asks, genuinely curious, maybe even with a bit of genuine concern in that tone.
âMaybe Iâm tired,â you say in a quiet voice.
âOf?â
âOf trying to be likable.â
He hums, considering the answer with his arms crossed over his chest and leaning against the wall. âAnd that young bodyguard of yours,â he brings up Yeonjun, âhe may be a kid but donât you think he deserves punishment for failing you?â
âNo.â You reply easily and Asher raises a brow.
âYou wonât punish him?â
âI donât blame him.â
He watches you as if you were a strange being, like you werenât making sense, though thereâs a bit of unease that marks his features, some sort of disturbance that troubles his thoughts and you realize that youâve said too much so you start walking again.
âMy people arenât allowed to act unless I tell them to.â
But Asher doesnât want to leave it with just that. âYou wanted my uncle to hurt you?â
âNobody wants to get hurt willingly, Asher.â
âThen what is it?â
Youâre talking too much.
âIt is none of your concern, thatâs what it is.â With that, you pick up your steps and walk into the room before he can push you any further.
Jungkook is in there when you walk in, and although being left in a room with just him should trigger some sort of response, surprisingly you donât tremble that easily and perhaps thatâs due to the fact that somehow, in some way, your body just knows that Jungkook doesnât pose any threat to you. Perhaps because somehow, in some way, youâve learned to put some trust in him in just the slightest way through the times heâs spent acting as your guard.
Itâs been a little over a month.
Mingyu came here prior to your meeting with Alexander and surprisingly you didnât need him as much as you thought you did. You think thatâs because Yeonjun managed to calm you down well, despite his perpetual fear in the beginning. He picked himself up in time, after all, and was there for you by mirroring what Mingyu would have done.
Maybe in some ways, your right hand man has trained all the Reapers in how to respond to you when he isnât around.
He took Yeonjun away for something, though right now you arenât too concerned about it.
â..Kook.â
You feel tired, you feel drained, and thatâs why youâve managed to only call Jungkook by a shortened name.
Heâs responsive at the first call, despite how quiet your voice is, and when he sees that youâve given him permission to come in close contact with you, he doesnât hesitate to walk over to you.
âDo you need something?â
Itâs odd the way you feel some sort of relief heâs as responsive as he used to be all those years ago. Maybe because a part of Jungkook will always remain the way that he always was, maybe thatâs why youâve learned to associate him with a figure that you can put a bit of trust in.
âWhen are they coming?â
âThey?â He tilts his head and when you reach a hand out towards him, he takes it in order to help you because you feel your legs are weak in the knees.
âNamjoon. Them.â He takes you to the bed so that you can lie down.
âIn a month or so,â he replies. âYou said as much time as you need to gain Alexanderâs favor but the latest would be in a month.â
Youâre already winning so whatâs the point in waiting?Â
Itâs been a month, over a month.
You just want to go home already.
âCan you call him?â
Jungkook looks for his phone. âWhat for?â
âTell him to come earlier,â you say, body turned over towards him, cheek against the pillow, eyes drowsy. âIn a week. I donâtâŠKarl hasâŠI want him dead.â
For a second his thumb hovers over his phone to look back over at you and there he finds, the little girl heâs seen holding her walls up so high not even a plane can cross over, beginning to crumble in just the slightest way.
You look exhausted.
The makeup does not hide the bags under your eyes, it doesnât hide the exhaustion, how drained you are over all of this. And maybe a part of that is due to your insisting to stay awake when you needed sleep but a big part of it is the mission itself.
Every mission is a little different from the other, but Jungkook has come to know that every one of them involves someone who has sucked all that sweet girl energy out of you. Theyâve all done you wrong and it canât be easy. It canât be easy having to face all of them one by one, trying to deal with it all, trying to rid of them, and ultimately as a result, hurting yourself in the process.
âKook?â Your eyes went closed for a second but upon his silence, you open them up again in order to look up at him, and due to your exhaustion, he finds the pretty girl he once loved all those years ago with the smallest voice as if calling out for him in a sense of help.
âI-Iâll call.â Heâs flustered, slightly, but hits the call button with his thumb and walks towards the bathroom. âStay awake, alright? I wonât be away for too long.â
He closes the door behind him to start looking around for something just as Namjoon picks up on the other end.
âJungkook?â
âY/N wanted me to tell you to come earlier.â
âEarlier?â Itâs surprising on his end because just the night before, you told him to stick to the original plan. âDid something happen?â Of course something mustâve happened for you to change your mind so quickly.
In some ways youâre just as stubborn as he is, so he knows you arenât someone who will change your mind that easily.
âThis afternoon, uhâŠâ Jungkook hesitates, not sure if itâs okay to relay him the news but something tells him you probably expect Jungkook to not stay silent about it to the boys. They share everything with each other after all, and if you really cared, you wouldnât have let him anywhere near you after what happened. âKarl, you know, after touching her when she felt uncomfortable?â He did mention the incident a few weeks ago to Namjoon already. âWell, Y/N took up his invitation to tea in order to catch up and stuff and I assume she pissed him off.â
Somehow, Namjoon expected that. After all, you hinted at doing something reckless during your call with him.Â
âIâm not sure what happened exactly because I wasnât there but Karl hit her.â
âWhat?â Thereâs some shuffling on the other end. âWhat do you mean hit her?â
âNot just once. She has bruises as a result.â
âBruises?â
âI should get back to her, she might fall asleep but Iâll catch up with you later.â He doesnât wait for Namjoonâs reply before cutting the call off and returning to your side out of worry that leaving you alone for too long wonât be good, and the fact that you might have actually fallen asleep on him.
Surprisingly youâre still awake, though your eyes are as droopy as they were when he left you.
âCan you turn over on your back?â Is the first thing he asks of you and you obey, turning over. The bed dips a little when he takes a seat beside you and thatâs when you feel he begins to take your lashes off.
âYou know thereâs a lot of processes that go into taking off makeup, right?â You tell him when he takes the other one off.
âI know, bub, Iâve done it before.â
Right.
Heâs helped you before.
âSo just stay still, yeah? You donât have to do anything.â
You listen to the lure of his voice, as soft as the way he used to speak to you all those years ago, and let your eyes close as he begins to swipe the makeup wipe over your face. Itâs gentle the way he does it, almost as gentle as Dasom, and although heâs a little clumsy and isnât as fast as she is, he does his best during it all.
When the makeup wipe is done, you feel your hair pushed back and a band coming over to keep it out of the way, then some sort of cloth on your chest and tied behind your neck.
Warm water walks over your face. Bits of it, not too much, not too little, so that you donât get too wet anywhere else, and then the feel of soapy foam begins to rub in circles all over your face. The massage feels nice and you almost feel your consciousness slipping away but you keep awake to the touch of Jungkookâs hands.
About a minute later, he soaks a washcloth into water and starts to wipe the cleanser off you so that you donât have to sit up and wash it off with water yourself.
It takes a moment but eventually, he gets it done, and then you feel a wet cotton pad swipe over next.
Something about all of this, the steps he memorized either for you from the past or the fact that he now does it himself regularly, feels rather domestic and justâŠsoft.
And in your sleepy and tired state, you feel anything but uncomfortable, lured in with the feeling of basking on top of clouds with your head bathing under the warm sun with light little pitter patters of rain sprinkling over you.
You donât know why you enjoy this so much despite how different it feels from when Dasom does it for you, but knowing that your trust is beginning to leak outside of Reapers somehow brings a sort of comfort you never thought youâd feel.
Itâs a little frightening because trusting is always scary, especially for people that had once broken it, but for some reason, it justâŠfeels right.
Somehow.
And maybe thatâs because you know they were never at fault in the first place, that they were just forced into making an unwanted decision.Â
Jung Hoseok would probably be in the same position as they were were he to realize the truth all those years ago. If he hadnât gotten hurt on that mission. If he hadnât been forced to lay on the infirmary bed in order to recover. If he hadnât stood away from the six of them.
Even still, as youâve said it plenty of times before, just because someone doesnât mean them doesnât mean it wouldnât hurt.
In the safe space that they provided you, you were kicked out of your own comfort and forced to return to the hell you thought you had escaped.
âWhy do you not cry?â His voice keeps you awake and when you look up at him through your lashes, eyes feeling quite dreary and heavy, he finds himself pausing in his ministrations as he stares down at you whoâs looking up directly at him.
âWhy do you ask that?â You return a question, voice just as soft.
Jungkookâs eyes trail down your face. âKarlâŠheâŠâ he didnât see what happened but the aftermath of it is right before his eyes. âAnd Leehyun andâŠ..â He presses his lips together. âYou have..so much to cry for.â
â...Do I now?â
âIs there nothing left?â He asks, a hand brushing back small strands of hair that tries to block your eyes.
You donât nod because youâre too tired to move so you nod through a blink. âItâs all dried up.â
From the water that he used to clean your face, a drop falls from your lash and trails down your cheek, mirroring what a teardrop looks like, and then you say, âButâŠif I knew how to cryâŠâŠdo you think you deserve to see them?â
He doesnât reply but you have your answer.
He doesnât feel worthy.
This Jungkook and the Jungkook you once knew long ago are the same in the way they always feel unworthy of something. No matter how many times you can assure him, he will always think there is something he can do better, that he is undeserving, that he can never be enough.
But unlike idiots who simply say âI donât deserve youâ and go about their days after breaking your heart, Jungkook says it and steps up to do what he can to try and prove to himself that he can be someone deserving.
He always did all that he could and when there came a point when he looked as if he could finally come to terms with being at peace with his love for you, it was ripped away from him all too soon and now heâs back to square one, trying to prove himself.
Even if it isnât in the form of love.
Jungkook will always care.
But even still,
âI still hate you.â
It comes out soft, it comes out quiet, and a little timid and a little brave, but you hadnât meant for it to come out.
If you were wide awake, if you werenât in such a vulnerable state, you would have never spoken those words to him. But because your consciousness is on the verge of slipping away, you speak them out loud for him to hear.
âI know.â And he replies in the same voice, the same softness, quiet, and timid, and brave.
He doesnât leave your side even after those exchanges uttered unto each other and you fall asleep next to his presence, next to his comfort, next to his warmth.
.
.
.
Jungkook wasnât there when Taehyung said he witnessed you sleepwalking but he said that it wasnât the sort of sleepwalking youâd see in a normal person. He said you looked like a ghost more than anything, and that at times, youâd just stand still in the middle of the room and not move an inch.
No, not a ghost. A corpse.
And now here he is, after endless refusal to sleep and finally allowing your eyes to stay closed, he witnesses what Taehyung had meant.
A corpse standing still in the middle of the room, blanket over her shoulders, eyes staring up at the dim sky outside the window, blank and without any hint of life in them.
He watches you from a distance, a furrow in his brows, with his tongue bitten back and his fists clenched by his side.
Subtle anger lies in his heart, brewing, not at you but towards the world that has made you into the sort of person you are today. Or maybe it had always been this way, maybe you had always been hurting and he just never noticed, maybe it was always like this all along and maybe, perhaps, they made it worse when they left you all alone to fend for your own self.
Feeding you to the wolves.
Heâs angry not just at the world but at himself and Jungkook knows that if the truth were to ever leave your lips about what actually happened to you, about all the things that youâve gone through, he knows that this hatred he feels right now is only but a small fraction waiting to build up before it all breaks into the tiniest little pieces.
Shattering in the way he had broken you.
Shattered.
The world can only do so much but he encouraged it by standing by, by letting it all fall down onto you, by letting himself be convinced that youâd be fine, that everything would be alright.
But nothing turned out alright.
In the days and months and years that followed your absence, they returned to how things were, returned to loving one another, accepting one another, forgiving one another. But in those days and months and years, he can only imagine what sort of events you had to face.
While they had each other, while they always had each other to lean on, did you have anyone by your side?
The Reapers may be one thing, supporting you and giving you their utmost loyalty, but did they ever hold power over the things that happened to you in the way Namjoon could have handled it? In the way he would have handled it?
âY/N?â You donât answer him when he calls out to you but he expected that so he walks on over to where youâre standing.
Youâre as still as ever, and he approaches with a careful, watchful gaze, hesitant when he reaches a finger over to you.Â
A small touch to the blanket, just over your shoulder, and when you donât freak out or move away from him, he puts two fingers.Â
Then another.
Then another.
And when you donât react to his hand, he proceeds to place a hand on your head and press it towards his chest.
You donât resist.
âCome on, letâs head back to bed, yeah?â And understanding that youâre okay with him even in this lifeless state of yours, because he knows your body is capable of telling the people you trust and donât trust apart, he puts his other hand under your knees and picks you up to carry you over back to the bed.
You comply well with him despite your unresponsive self, and when he tucks you back in with the blanket pulled over your chest, he looks back to see your eyes staring straight toward him. Empty yet lonely.
Vacant.
Not at him but through him, and his heart aches a little at the sight.
âYouâre alright now,â Jungkook whispers. âYouâre alright.â
If Hoseok had been here, would he have been able to do a better job looking after you?
Jungkook wishes he could have been better.

Trained in waking up early and pulling all-nighters because of filming, you were used to witnessing the sun rise. Usually, you didnât pay it much attention. The sun rose every day and you had other more important things to do than watch it go through the same motions. You were rushing to leave, making coffee and answering texts on your phone or you were too tired to do anything other than go straight to bed and close the blinds.
You had forgotten how beautiful it was, how the quiet of the early morning glowed in soft orange. Only you and Seokjin were awake, snuggled up on the large white couch on the balcony on the main floor. Your feet were laying on his lap and his arm was wrapped around your waist.
You had woken up early, fading images of the red ballroom and empty eyes haunted your sleep as much as you tried to bury them during the day. Thankfully, Jimin hadnât been there when you had woken up, drenched in sweat and grasping wildly at the sheets to remind yourself that you were at the Castle. That it had been more than a week since you had been in that ballroom.
It would go away. It had to. It was over. Nothing happened to you. You would get over it.
You got up, stretched your sore muscles from all the walking the previous day and put on some music to take your mind off the long green dress and paddle numbers, and started your day. No one else was supposed to be awake so early in the morning but when you went to the kitchen to make yourself a cup of coffee, Seokjin was already there, mixing pancake batter with a large wooden spoon.Â
Putting your arms around him, you had watched him work until he sent you away, claiming that you were distracting him. It wasnât your fault that his neck looked in desperate need of kissing and that your mouth had trailed downwards subconsciously. Since you werenât wanted in the kitchen, you went outside to the balcony to savor the sharp air before the sun appeared on the horizon.
Seokjin joined you soon with two cups of coffee. âIt feels like a mug of hot coffee would be more appropriate, but the weatherâs too hot,â you had joked.
He had made your favorite iced coffee in the way too-expensive coffee machine you had purchased when you first got the house. Another one of your impulsive purchases. But it was worth it. It made some of the best coffee you had ever tasted. The only coffee above that was made by a small coffee shop nestled in a quiet alleyway in Paris. The perfect amount of milk and sugar, not too sweet and not too bitter.Â
You were both a little tired from your little trip to the lake. A sweet kind of pull in your chest, not easily noticeable. You had returned as the sky grew darker and had ordered takeout for dinner, which you enjoyed spread around the garden. Surprisingly, almost everything in the baskets had been devoured during your time at the lake. Alice had been reluctant to leave but you had promised her that she was welcome to visit you again soon. She had hugged each of you tightlyâeven Yoongi, who didnât seem to mind at allâand promised that she would be back to play more.
âSheâs a little hurricane,â Seokjin said. He was glowing with the sunrise stroking his face. âShe reminds me of you a little. Was that what you were like when you were little?â
âI was never that cute,â you joked. Your aunt would argue but while Alice was a hurricane, sweeping up everyone in her way and winning them over, you had been a nightmare, difficult to handle, not listening to anyone, and independent to a fault. âOr that social. I would like to believe that I contributed a little to the shaping of her personality but honestly, her parents are both amazing. They raised her really well and she was already incredible to begin with. She will become a much better person than me.â
He looked down at your legs resting on his lap. âThat will be hard. You are probably the best person I know.â He shrugged as if what he said didnât matter, as if it didnât make flowers bloom in your chest.
You caressed his cheek, prompting him to look at you. âThat might be a little worrying but thank you. You are one of the best people I know too. Shhhh,â you quieted down his protests. âIf you can say that about me, I can say that about you.â
âI havenât done anything special. Nothing like you. You-â
âStop that.â You laid two fingers on his lips and he obediently stilled them under your touch. âFirst, you donât have to do anything special. Who defines special either way? Some of the kindest, most loyal, amazing people I know show these qualities in small ways, that doesnât make them any less special. Second, who says you didnât do anything special? Who was there for Jungkook when he distanced himself from everyone else? Who cooks for us every day and takes care of us? Who is always trying to cheer us up when someone is feeling down? Who-?â
âEnough, enough,â he interrupted you, shaking his head. His human ear and cheeks were stark red at all the praise. âI know Iâm amazing, thatâs enough.â
You laughed and captured his lips in a kiss. Warmth, more comforting than what the sun could provide, filled your insides as you tangled your fingers in his soft hair. He opened his lips for you and you slowly explored the inside of his mouth. You had always enjoyed kissing but nothing compared to the kisses you had shared with your hybrids the past few months.
Lazy mornings were rare for you. There was always one reason or another to be running around the house in a hurry to leave or lock yourself in your office. You were hostage to an endless need to always be productive. Thatâs what mornings were for. Maybe you had been completely wrong because this one was one of the best mornings you had ever experienced.
Seokjin heard the footsteps on the stairs before you did, turning his head around to watch Jungkook, Jimin, and Namjoon climb up. You called for them and Jungkook and Jimin ran to you, squeezing themselves between you. Namjoon followed laughing and sat down next to Seokjin, throwing an arm around his shoulders.
Hoseok, Yoongi, and Taehyung appeared soon and Seokjin left to go plate the breakfast and bring it to the balcony. You didnât eat on the balcony often, mostly because of the low table that made it a little uncomfortable, but no one wanted to move. Jungkook and Namjoon went with Seokjin inside to help but when you moved to do the same, Jimin wrapped his arms around your waist tightly and wouldnât let you go.
âNo, you are staying with me!â he exclaimed and proceeded to bury his face in your belly, purring.
Hoseok looked at you in amusement and you shrugged your shoulders, used to Jiminâs antics by now. The three of them took one of the other two couches while the five of you remained squeezed in one. Yoongi looked adorably rumpled from sleep, messy hair and heavy eyes, the stark opposite of Hoseok, who was wide awake and energetic as usual. Taehyung wasnât the statue he was the first few days but he remained perfectly kept and quiet.
You filled your plate with three pancakes and your favorite toppings and dug in. The conversation returned to your trip to the lake.
âWhen can we go again?â Jungkook asked, chewing his pancakes with passion.
You cut another piece of your pancakes. âYou can go whenever you want, it isnât that far from the house.â
He pouted. âI meant all of us together.â
âThatâs⊠a little harder,â you said. âIâm back at work next week and I have a full schedule. You can go together though. John and Alice could join you even if Iâm not there.â
Jungkookâs bottom lip stuck out even further. âIt isnât the same without you.â
âIf there is a day I finish work early, I might join you.â You could barely drag your feet back home most days after work and the trek to the lake would feel like hell, but you would try for them.
Namjoon seemed to know exactly what you were thinking. âYou are too tired after work for that. After working for so many hours we canât expect you to trek down to the lake. You come back after the sun has set or just as itâs setting, it would be exhausting for you to walk for half an hour down to the lake in the dark and then in an hour or so walk back again.â
You wanted to protest but you knew he was right. Although your work wasnât physically demanding, you spent long hours on your feet, instructing the actors and the crew and checking in with different departments. By the time you were home even dragging your feet to the garden for dinner was a struggle.
You reached for Jungkookâs hand, rubbing your thumb in circles to soothe him. âWeâll figure something out, yeah? If I take a day offâWhen I take a day off,â you corrected yourself, âwe can do something fun. We could go to the lake or we could do something else. Los Angeles is full of places to visit and activities to try.â
Jungkook seemed to think about it for a few seconds before perking up and asking if you could visit a gallery he had seen on the internet. You were quick to agree as Jimin joined as well, asking you about all the places he wanted to visit. You had told them before that they were free to go out without you anywhere they liked, you had printed their papers just in case so they could have them in case the Hybrid Services asked any questions, but they had yet to step further than the Castle grounds and the forest alone. John could also accompany them but no one had taken you up to your offer.
As you were finishing breakfast your phone started ringing. One of the producers of Six of Crows was calling.
âSorry, I have to take this one,â you said, answering the call.
You ended up having to go down to your office to look up some files on your computer. As the premiere date approached, you would be getting more calls like this. Post-production was finished by now and the movie was nearly ready to be shown on the big screen but there were still a few tiny details that needed fine-tuning.
Ending the call, you checked your emails since you were already in front of your computer. You would probably go to the studios later in the day to speak with a few members of your team on the Raven Cycle project. You wouldnât stay long but it meant that you had to schedule your day around it. Your break hadnât ended yet you were already overwhelmed with work. Your to-do list stretched on and on, seemingly endless.
Your back and neck were getting stiff because of all the sitting and lounging around. You should start doing some exercises again. During your break, you had only been to the gym once and it was only two floors down. You should get back into the habit but you were great at finding excuses not to go. You were too busy, too tired, too preoccupied.
There was a knock on the door. You looked at the time at the bottom right corner of your computer screen and realized it was four hours later.
âCome in,â you called. You rolled your neck and heard the little pops. You desperately needed some exercise. And a massage. And an improved posture probably.
Hoseok opened the door with his elbow as he carried a tray inside your office. âI come bearing gifts,â he said with a wide heart-shaped smile. It was like the room instantly brightened. If the sun was personified, it would be Hoseok.
âWhat have you brought me?â you asked, making space on your desk for the tray. You had to look through some of your old files and they covered most of the surface. You stacked them into piles quickly, to be organized properly at a later time.
âJin made fruit salad and we have some leftover muffins from yesterday. Jungkook made the juice, itâs banana and cherry!â
The fruit salad was a mix of mango, strawberries, watermelon, blackberries, peaches, and berries. A vanilla muffin was next to it and a tall glass of juice. âEverything looks delicious. Thank you.â
You moved to grab the fork and winced when you pulled on your stiff muscles. Hoseokâs smile faded. âAre you okay?â
âYeah, yeah, donât worry,â you were quick to say. âIâve just been sitting in this chair a lot these past few days and my back is complaining. Really, thatâs on me.â
âIâŠâ He hesitated for a moment. âI could give you a massage if youâd like. Iâm not a professional but I⊠I used to give massages to my past owner often. He was an idol so he danced and performed a lot and I had learned from masseurs how to do it. I could do that for you if you liked.â
âYou donât have to. Itâs just a stiff back, itâll go away when I stop sitting all day.â
A massage sounded like heaven at that moment but you could do without it. Giving massages could be tiring and Hoseok didnât have to do that just because you had bad posture and had stopped going regularly to the gym. If you really needed it, you could pay a masseur to come to your house. It seemed silly so you never did, but you could.
âI want to,â he said eagerly, his tail standing at attention. âI can make you feel better, I promise. If youâre comfortable with that, of course.â
You searched his face for any sign that he didnât actually want to do it but you found nothing. âOkay, then. I would love a massage right now.â
âYay! I will do my best,â Hoseok promised. âLetâs attack those muscle knots! Gently of course.â You giggled as he came to stand behind you. He pretended to crack his fingers before settling them on your shoulders. You were wearing a shirt with spaghetti straps and his hands were warm on your bare skin, which buzzed in anticipation. âLean forward a little. Yeah, thatâs perfect.â
He dug his fingers on either side of your neck and you had to bite your lip to stop a very embarrassing sound from slipping out. It sent a current through your whole body like you went numb to everything except the feeling of his hands on you. He kneaded your muscles, progressively adding more pressure. You closed your eyes, your body relaxing, losing some of the tension.
âThat feels good,â you said, trying to keep your voice steady.
âI told you.â You could hear the satisfied smile on his face even though you kept your eyes closed.
One by one, your strings unraveled and your body felt lighter, as if you could float away if he pulled his hands away. He worked on the knots on the back of your neck and around it before he moved on to your shoulders and shoulder blades. You had received massages beforeâyou had visited spas with friends on several occasionsâbut this felt different. You forgot about work and all the things you had to do, all the million little things that were hanging over your head, and for a moment you let yourself relax.

The forest was still, bracketed by the almost black of the night. There were no lights that Yoongi could see coming from inside, even though you said there were multiple holiday homes around the lake. The Castle stood alone, like a real castle guarding the forest.
Hoseok was humming along to a pop song that was playing on his phone, it was at a low volume so his humming was almost as loud as the music. It was late into the night, everyone in the house having already retreated to their rooms. Yoongi didnât care much about the song, it was generic at best. The vocals werenât great and the beat was the same beat that every song used this summer with a little tweaking. But Hoseok liked it so he didnât say anything.
The fox hybrid was sprawled on his bed, his eyes half closed as he moved his head to the music. His silk nightshirt had ridden up to expose a sliver of smooth tanned skin and Yoongiâs eyes kept being drawn to it.
âAnything interesting out there?â Hoseok asked. Yoongi shrugged. âYou have been standing there for half an hour. Donât look at me like that, you have.â
He raised his eyebrows, doubting that it had been that long, but moved away from the balcony door, sitting down on his bed. âItâs the same every night.â
âAnd you still look every night.â Hoseok turned off the music and stretched. His shirt rode up higher.
Yoongi looked down at his hands. âItâs calming. There is something about the trees and the lake, being away from the city. Itâs quiet.â
His ears picked up the soft shuffling before a weight dipped into the bed next to him. âItâs nice, isnât it? Has it really been only five months since weâve been here? Less than that? I canât imagine living in the city again, too much noise.â
Yoongi had lived his whole life in cities, he was used to their noise and the way it never went away. The sound of cars and motorbikes, people talking and shouting. It was never quiet. Not the way it was out here.
He wanted to tell Hoseok that he would never have to live in the city again but he couldnât. On one hand, your job could lead you anywhere and Yoongi had a feeling that wherever you went, they would follow you, just like Virginia. On the other hand, although some part of him insisted that this was permanent, that this life they had built here wouldnât be taken from them, he knew that the world wasnât so kind. Sometimes, he stayed up at night thinking about it while Hoseok dreamed. He gazed at the forest to remind himself that they were still here, in this small paradise on earth, and then contemplated all the ways this could end. His mind wasnât kind to him on those nights.
âVirginia was like this too,â Hoseok continued. âI miss it a little. The countryside was pretty and the house too. Almost like a fairytale. Do you think weâll go back again?â
Hoseokâs hand was fidgeting on his thigh and Yoongi grabbed it to still it. âMaybe. She will have to film another season after this one. If this show is as successful as they say, there will be a few more seasons to come. They built sets and everything there.â
âI hadnât thought of that.â Hoseok scooted closer to him and laid his head on his shoulder, their hands intertwined. âDo you think she will rent the same house? I want to go back there. It felt like home.â
Yoongi refrained from telling him that wherever he was, it felt like home. It was something someone more expressive than Yoongi would say, instead he said, âWe can ask her. I donât think sheâll mind. If it isnât booked at the time, we could stay there again.â
âIâll recruit Jiminie, she canât say no to him,â he said, nuzzling closer to Yoongiâs neck, almost scenting him.
âShe canât say no to any of you.â
Hoseok hummed, his breath warming Yoongiâs skin and the scent of cinnamon tickling his lungs. âShe wouldnât say no to you either. If you ever asked her for anything.â
Yoongi didnât know what to think about that. If he believed it. Yoongi had been trying to do better, trying to be a better person than he had been at the beginning. He would hate himself if he ever put you through what he had before. He would be making it up to you for his whole life. He wasnât the same as the other hybrids, the same courtesy shouldnât be extended to him.
Hoseokâs lips brushed his neck, light as a feather, and Yoongi shivered at the touch. Scenting each other wasnât something new, they had been doing that since they escaped the ring. Before that, they would brush their wrists together through the bars of their cages, longing for the small comfort of each otherâs scent. After Yoongi had disappeared, Hoseok had been touching and scenting him more as if he was afraid that he would slip through his fingers.
Some nights, Hoseok would crawl into his bed in the middle of the night and cling on to him. âStay,â Hoseok would say. He didnât tell him what his nightmares were about, he didnât have to.
Yoongi vowed to himself to never leave him again. He would bite, scratch, and kick his way to him if he ever had to.
He had a lot to regret about that first month. He hadnât only hurt you, he had hurt everyone else too. His own nightmares persisted, leaving him clutching the sheets, with his back to Hoseok, staying deadly still so he wouldnât wake him up. So no one would know that those days still haunted him even though he wasnât the one who had suffered.
In some of his dreams, the hybrid ring got to him before you did and punished him for escaping, before stabbing an injection in his neck and hauling him to the ring for one last fight. In others, it was Hoseok that they took and those were worse. They found him when he was looking for him and Yoongi could do nothing to stop them, voiceless with his feet rooted to the floor.
In some rare ones, he never made it out of the house. Namjoon threw him against the wall and held him there, looking more like a vengeful god than the real Namjoon. His sharp teeth gleamed viciously as he sunk them into Yoongiâs neck, breaking the skin and ripping out everything that was keeping him alive.
Hoseok pulled back, his eyes searching Yoongiâs face. âAre you okay?â
âIâm fine. Thinking.â Of course, Hoseok would notice his thoughts spiraling. Yoongi had mastered hiding all emotions from his face but Hoseok could see right through any masks he crafted.
âYou looked a little lost there for a moment,â he said, drawing closer to him again. âYou can talk to me, you know.â He spoke almost jokingly but he couldnât hide the tendrils of hurt in his voice. âI know you like to keep some things to yourself⊠But Iâm here for you. I would never judge you, I swear.â
Yoongi was a coward. After his talk with Jimin, he had been planning to tell him everything but he kept putting it off. It was never the right moment, it could wait.
âI know,â Yoongi said quietly, squeezing Hoseokâs hand. âI want to tell you. I think you deserve that after everything.â
Hoseok frowned. âIt isnât about what I deserve. I just want to know so I can help. So I can understand you better. Nothing you say can ever change the way I see you. Nothing. You were there for me when I thought my life was over, that everything was over. You saved me, Yoongi. I would have died in there if it hadnât been for you. I would trust you with my life. But sometimes, when you donât tell me thingsâimportant thingsâit makes me feel like you donât trust me at all.â
Yoongiâs heart gave a terrible bang. âThat isnât true. I trust you. I trust you more than anyone. I trust you more than I trust myself. Itâs just⊠Itâs hard to tell you when I want to forget.â
âI understand,â Hoseok said, his gaze falling on their joined hands on Yoongiâs lap. âBut I donât think you can forget either way.â
âYouâre right, I canât. And I never will.â It was too big, too cruel. For worse or for better, it had changed who he was to his core. He was who he was because of what had happened to him and Jimin. He had met both Jimin and Hoseok because of that monster. âBut I want you to know now.â
So he told him everything. He detached himself from his words and numbed his feelings, because he was afraid that if he didnât, he wouldnât be able to sleep. He started from the beginning, from his first owner to the terrible end. He couldnât look at him as he spoke, focusing on their connected hands. Hoseokâs scent soured until Yoongi could barely recognize it. But he had to power on.
When he was finished, Hoseok shot up, wrapping his arms around him impossibly hard and buried his face in Yoongiâs neck. There was wetness brushing against his throat and Yoongi only hugged him tighter.
âIâm sorry.â Hoseokâs voice was breaking and Yoongi hated that he was the cause for it, even though it was better this way. âIt wasnât your fault. It wasnât. Iâm so sorry.â
âYou donât have to apologize.â He brought his wrist to Hoseokâs neck, gently scenting him. They both needed it. âYou saved me too. You saved me, Hobi.â
And sleep claimed them like that, wrapped up in each other with dried tears on their cheeks.

Taehyung lay still in his bed, not making a sound. Phantom pains spread over his body, squeezing and squeezing until nothing was left of him. His head was loud but the sounds were muffled as if he was submerged underwater.
The room was illuminated by the soft light from the lamp next to his bed. He left it on every night. It was the same pattern, his nightmares not allowing him to rest more than a few hours at a time. There were new ones now. Ones of the red ballroom, the people in the chairs turning into monsters and dragging their claws all over his skin. You stood among them in your green dress, watching as it happened, your face empty.
Taehyung opened his eyes. He could see the forest from his room. He had never been to a forest before coming to the Castle, had never even seen one. It was majestic, the dark greens and browns, the way the branches reached towards the sky. Upwards and upwards.
He closed his eyes again. His tears had long dried when sleep swept him away again.
âŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ©
Your heartbeat rattled your chest as if being chased by an invisible force with no escape. You swallowed down the bitterness in your mouth and willed the sharp images of your nightmare away. They were so clear, the red curtains and the shiny floors. The taste of the expensive champagne and the hors dâ oeuvre on your tongue. Long dresses swayed at your vision's edge, silk, velvet, and satin. Steady hands held guns aimed at you, they went off with a terrible scream. You woke up.
You were awake. You were in your room in the Castle. You were safe.
You tried to calm down your erratic breathing. Jimin was sleeping next to you and the last thing you wanted was to wake him up in the middle of the night and worry him. Clenching your teeth, you silently counted each breath. Were your hands shaking? They felt like they were shaking.
One, two, three.
Slower. Try slower.
Did your hands stop shaking? You gripped the fabric of your nightgown.
One, twoâ
A sleepy voice calling your name disturbed the murky waters of your mind. âAre you okay?â
You closed your eyes and took a deep breath. It was over. You were in Los Angeles. You were fine. Nothing had happened to you, no one had questioned you. You had gotten out. You were fine.
âDid I wake you up?â you asked. Your voice sounded weak even to your ears.
You heard the sheets rustle as Jimin moved closer. âCan I hug you?â
In the darkness of the room, you couldnât see him well, only the shape of his body. âYou donât have to ask.â
âYou are shaking.â
Were you? So it wasnât just your hands. Another deep breath. Force your muscles to relax like the pieces of a machine.
âI am okay now, donât worry. Come here.â You opened your arms and Jimin crawled into them, hugging your waist and laying his head on your collarbones. âGo back to sleep, kitten.â
Jimin shook his head. âNot if you donât. What happened?â
âJust a bad dream, it was nothing.â The lies tasted bitter on your tongue. Were they lies though? It should be nothing, it shouldnât be haunting you like that. Nothing had happened to you, you reminded yourself as if you repeated it enough times maybe the nightmares would go away. âI just need a few minutes to forget it.â
âDo you want to talk about it? Maybe that could be better than forgetting,â Jimin said.
But forgetting was the goal. Or at least getting rid of the nightmares that shouldnât still be happening. It was over and you were okay. You were okay. There was no reason to worry Jimin, not when you werenât the one who had suffered. You got dressed up, drank some champagne and made small talk. It wasnât the end of the world.
âYou donât have to worry about this, itâll go away on its own.â You run a hand up his back to comfort him. âMy brain is just playing tricks on me.â
Jiminâs hand sought out your own and intertwined your fingers. He was quiet for a few moments before speaking, âIs this about the auction?â
You stilled. He couldnât have known. You hadnât mentioned it to anyone. And what right did you have to complain about it? You composed yourself. âHow did you guess?â
âYou have been⊠different since you came back. You have been lost in your head. I know you are tired and itâs hard with Taehyung now but you can talk to us if you want to. It must have been really scary.â He drew closer to you, gripping your hand tighter.
âI wasnât alone. I had John there with me.â
âThat doesnât mean it wasnât scary,â he whispered. âWe were scared for you. We thoughtâ We trusted you but we were scared.â
Your fingers tangled in his hair and rubbed behind his cat ears which you knew would relax him. âIâm sorry I scared you.â
âItâs okay. Taehyung is here now.â
Regardless of how many nightmares you had and the tightening in your chest whenever you saw the color of blood. Regardless of the constant fear of being discovered that would never go away. You could never regret what you had done. Not for a moment. Just thinking of Taehyung in that manâs hands evaporated any doubts you had about your decision.
Jimin nosed softly at your collarbones. âWe love you. Itâs okay to be scared, you can share it with us. You can share it with me.â
âIâm not scared,â you said. It didnât matter that it sounded like you were lying to yourself. âItâs over. Itâs been more than a week since it happened. Iâm the last person who should be having nightmares over it.â
âWhy are you saying that? It must have been terrifying.â
You took a deep breath, the red bleeding into the darkness. âIt was easy to blend in. It was like so many of the parties and galas I have attended. I was the guest of honor, no one suspected anything. I wasnât the oneââ
You cut yourself off before you uttered the words but both of you knew. Silence fell between you. You wished you could fall asleep again but sleep was so far away.
âDo you feel guilty?â he asked quietly.
âFor what?â You were confused. Why would you feel guilty? You had done your best, probably more than anyone in their right mind would do.
Jimin gave a small shrug, bringing your joined hands to your chest. âYou just sounded like it. Like you felt guilty for having nightmares about it. You donât have to be. You are here and you are okay butâ But you could have not been.â There was fear in his voice and it hurt.
You held him closer and squeezed his hand. You were there now and you wouldnât be going anywhere. His breath warmed your bare skin. You werenât alone anymore, you had seven people to think about when you made decisions. You had a home and you would fight to get back to it every time.
âLetâs go to sleep, kitten. Weâll dream better together.â
âŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ©
After your short break, your return to work was uneventful. A few more days would have been nice but time was moving fast and there were a lot of things to do. On your first day back, before you had left the house Jimin and Jungkook got teary-eyed saying goodbye to you. Going back to work was hard for you too after being used to staying at home with them, but you would fall into your usual routine soon enough.
Your work was a big part of who you were, returning to the studios was like returning home in a way. The cast and the crew greeted you warmly with hugs and pats on the back. Will handed you a pack of papers and you made your way together to the reading room. You would be doing a few read-throughs to get the actors familiar with the characters again and work through a few knots in the script.
It was the same way it had been, waking up at the crack of dawn and returning when the sun was descending in the sky. The hybrids clung to you in any way they could while you were home. At breakfast and dinner, there was always someone touching you, Jimin sitting on your lap or Namjoon holding your hand or Jungkook hugging you from behind. They missed you and you missed them too but there was little you could do.
In the quiet of the night when most of the hybrids had retired, you asked Hoseok how Taehyung was adjusting. The answer was always the same. Hopeful but disappointing as wellâguilt ate at you for feeling disappointed when you knew Taehyung was doing his best.
The story of the Raven Boys unraveled during the days and the nights. Your copy of the script was overflowing with red ink, underlined lines, and writing in the margins. It was shaping up to become everything you had envisioned and more. And you were happy. But you also missed spending more than a few hours at the Castle.
You could invite them to join you for filming and spend a little more time with them. However, you had a one-track mind while you were working and you couldnât provide the attention they deserved. Often, you got too lost in your work. You could feel it now, clouding your mind and blending the days into a string of numbered scenes and takes.
It was a blessing that one week into filming, you finished early, just a couple of hours after lunch, and instead of staying and obsessing over the smallest details like you were prone to doing, you packed your backpack and returned home. John drove you back with instructions to relax and not think about work until the next morning. You didnât mind listening to him.
âIâm home,â you shouted after opening the door. Due to their sensitive hearing any hybrid on the top two floors would hear the door opening, you liked to let them know it was you so they wouldnât worry. You had wanted to surprise them so you hadnât texted that you were coming back.
Jimin and Hoseok were the first ones to rush to the living room. Jimin fell into your arms with practiced ease and buried his face in your neck.
âSurprise,â you said, ruffling his blond hair.
He purred in contentment. Hoseok also joined the hug, his fluffy tail wrapping around your legs.
âAre you staying?â Jimin asked, his eyes shining with hope.
âI am. We finished early today so Iâm all yours for the rest of the day.â
Jimin cheered and held onto your hand, following you into the kitchen where you poured yourself a glass of homemade lemonade from the fridge. A book and a few notebooks were spread over the kitchen island and you took a closer look at them. You recognized the textbook as one you had bought a few years ago during your first visit to Seoul for the press tour of one of your Oscar-winning films. You had read through the first few pages on the plane back to LA and when you had arrived you had placed it on the shelf that housed all your language-learning books and never picked it up again.
âAre you learning Korean?â you asked Jimin, scanning the awkward handwritten Korean letters in the pages of the notebook.
Flustered, Jimin didnât look at you as he replied, âHoseok is helping me. I thought I could communicate better with Taehyung if I knew a bit of Korean but itâs really hard.â
âHeâs doing really well though,â Hoseok interjected with pride. âHe is getting good at reading Hangul and he knows a few basic phrases too. He is learning very quickly.â
Jimin shrugged, his cheeks getting adorably rosy. âI have a great teacher.â
Hoseok cooed at the younger hybrid while you flipped through the pages of the textbook. You recognized your handwriting on the first few, you had written down a few questions you had so you could look them up later, which didnât happen. Now, the answers were written underneath your questions in blue ink. The next pages were marked in both Jiminâs and Hoseokâs handwriting, there were notes in the margins and between lines and little doodles of flowers and butterflies.
Footsteps climbing up the stairs prompted you to let go of the notebook. Jungkook came running through the kitchen door and threw himself at you, nuzzling into your neck. You planted your feet on the ground and caught him just in time before you both went flying back.
âYouâre back,â he whispered. He was bouncing on his feet, his excitement contagious.
âWe finished early so I packed everything up and rushed back,â you said. âHas it been that long since I was back at a normal hour?â
Jungkook nodded resolutely and you couldnât help but giggle. The truth was that it was the first time you were finishing early since filming had started again. The first week back was the busiest since you had to review everything, redraw most of the plans, check in with every department, and generally when you werenât actively filming you spent them running around the studios like a headless chicken.
You should get a day off as soon as you could. For a workaholic, you missed being at home with them too much.
Namjoon and Seokjin were the next ones to appear at the kitchen door. Jungkook still hadnât let go of you so they were content to leave twin kisses on your cheeks while teasing the bunny hybrid.
âIs Yoongi with Taehyung?â you asked, noting the absence of the two hybrids.
âThey are in the garden,â Namjoon said, a fond smile playing on his lips. âYoongi has been lounging in the sunlight since we finished lunch.â
âHeâs starting to gain some color, he looks less like a ghost these days,â Seokjin joked. âSometimes I think he is more cat than Jimin is.â
You laughed with them before your attention was drawn back to the textbook. It was hard learning a new language, you knew that very well. It could take years to reach a decent level depending on your dedication and the language itself. You remembered Alice suggesting you should learn Korean to communicate better with Taehyung. Jimin was doing just that without anyone asking him to and by the handwriting on a good chunk of the textbook, he had been doing it for some time.
Namjoon also took an interest in the textbook but he already seemed to know that Jimin had been studying the language.
âI would like to learn to,â he said. âI didnât have to chance to learn another language in the past and it would be beneficial if we could communicate with Taehyung in his mother tongue. Maybe it would get him to open up more.â
Seokjin nodded. âI think itâs a good idea. I would like to learn a bit of Korean too.â
âI could teach you a few things,â Hoseok offered. âBut Iâm not a teacher, I donât know what Iâm doing most of the time. I can teach you a few words or phrases butâ, he glanced at Jimin with a guilty look, âwe are having some trouble with grammar.â
âThat makes sense,â you reassured him. âIt is very different speaking a language, especially when itâs your mother tongue, and teaching it to someone else. Thatâs why there are university courses for it. Itâs a difficult job. But if you really want to learn Korean, I could find you a teacher who specializes in it. That way Hobi would have less on his plate as well.â
Jiminâs eyes widened. âReally? Can you do that?â
âOf course, I can,â you said. âI can find the best Korean teacher in Los Angeles and I can ask them to come here so you wonât have to go to the city. Iâll have to provide transportation of course. How does that sound?â
âAmazing,â Jimin cheered and hugged you again. âThank you, thank you.â
âItâs the least I could do.â
The least because you couldnât do the same. You didnât have the time or the energy to learn another language when most of your day was taken up by your work. During the days you were at the studios and at nights often you had to retire to your office to answer emails and revise scripts before going to sleep. The best you could manage would be to learn a few basic phrases but that wouldnât be helping anyone.
The arrangements for the teacher were easy. You didnât have to look long on the internet and after a few calls you had found the perfect candidate who was more than happy to make the trip to the Castle three times a week and stay for three hours to teach the hybrids. You added a very generous bonus for her trouble.
Before finalizing the contract, you talked with Hoseok about an idea you had.
âShe could help Taehyung with his English as well. A couple of hours a week could help a lot,â you suggested.
Hoseok was on washing duty after dinner and Taehyung had gone to his room for the night so it was the perfect opportunity to talk to him about this.
âItâs a great idea, if he wants to. I do my best but⊠I donât think Iâm helping on this,â Hoseok said, scrubbing a plate with the sponge. Foam was everywhere.
You rubbed his arm soothingly. âYouâre doing amazing. Much better than I could have hoped for. But I know itâs hard for you and I wish there was a way to help you. Iâm sorry I canât do much.â
Hoseok shrugged, bubbles rising above the dishes. âYou are doing the best you can, given the situation. You have already done more than anyone would have expected of you.â
Laughter floated in from the living room. You smiled through your exhaustion.
âAsk Taehyung about the teacher, okay? And tell him itâs your idea, not mine. I donât want him to accept because I am the one asking.â
âŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ©
Jimin ran down the stairs, laughing wildly. Energy coursed through his veins and urgency pushed his legs to run faster and faster. He felt like a nymph in Land of the Gods, running through their trees, their hair flowing like an enchantment and laughing and laughing. He didnât look at his pursuer, he knew who he was and it only filled him with delight.
The rooms blurred as he passed by, never losing his footing. He emerged in the garden and the sun kissed his skin, the fire inside him burning hotter in the heat. The green stretched around him and for a moment, he got the crazy desire to go into the forest and get lost there, underneath the shade of the tall trees. He wanted to dance and drink and eat juicy fruits between the trees like the fae in the stories you told them yesterday night.
Maybe one day.
Instead, he rushed to the stairs that led down to their room. The footsteps behind him were getting closer and he pushed himself to go faster, flying down the stairs.
There was nowhere else to go now and he paused in front of their bed. It was enough time for two hands to wrap around his waist and tackle him on the mattress. He resisted a little, just for show, before wrapping his own arms around broad shoulders and laughing some more. He felt like a child, in a way he couldnât remember ever feeling before.
âYou canât escape from me,â Jungkook said, hovering above him.
âI didnât try,â Jimin replied, running his hands over his shoulders and up the sides of his neck. âBunnies are supposed to be fast, arenât they? But you only caught me when I had nowhere else to go.â
Jungkook leaned into his touch. âI would have caught you anyway. You couldnât run forever. Now youâre mine.â
He lowered himself until their bodies were merged together. He sniffed at Jiminâs neck, taking in his scent like he had done so many times, before rubbing his nose and his cheek over his scent gland. Jimin couldnât stop the purrs that escaped him as his body melted. His hands tangled in Jungkookâs hair, who made an appreciative sound.
The scent of pears and gardenias was everywhere, it was deliciously overwhelming. He could almost taste the sweetness and tanginess of the pears on his tongue.
He tugged on Jungkookâs hair before he could lose his mind. âMy turn.â
Jungkook arched his neck back to allow Jimin to scent him. He quickly found his scent gland and buried his face there. He closed his eyes and a garden bloomed behind his eyelids.
Jungkookâs scent was so sweet and it was mouth-watering combined with the packâs scents. He could smell his own scent there and Namjoonâs scent of summer rain and pine trees was enveloping everything. The aroma of honey buns and sweet milk glazed over them like sugar and notes of cinnamon and sandalwood pushed through. If he looked for it, he could detect your scent, naturally fainter than hybridsâ. Greedily, he searched for two more scents but he could only get the impression of dark chocolate. He might have imagined it.
âIâm happy,â Jmin whispered like it was a secret. There was the irrational fear that if he said it any louder, he would tempt fate to take it back.
âIâm happy too,â Jungkook said, laying his head on Jiminâs chest.
Jimin tangled his hands in his hair and massaged his scalp, he was rewarded with a pleased sigh. âItâs like everything has finally fallen into place. Iâm not sad anymore. I didnât realize how sad I was until I wasnât. Even when I was happy, I was sad too. I donât know how to explain it.â
âYou donât have to.â Jungkook caught his hand in his and brought it to his mouth, placing kisses on the back of it. Jiminâs heart fluttered with the wings of thousands of butterflies. âAll that matters to me is that you arenât anymore. I only want you to be happy. I know it isnât possible to be happy all the time but I want us all to be happy. Together and happy.â
âTogether and happy,â Jimin repeated quietly.
Every time he was was with Jungkook like that, his mind strayed. It went to all the possibilities, all the could-have-beens and the what-ifs. What would have happened if Jimin wasnât a coward, if he hadnât run away? If he had told you what had happened before, would he have been braver? Did Jungkook feel the same after everything that happened? Did he still want to kiss him?
His bunny was so beautiful, his soft dark brown ears that flopped against his hair, his cute nose and large eyes that held the galaxy inside them. Everything about him was beautiful and Jimin loved him so much he could burst. He wasnât sure if it was right to love him like this, to want to kiss him and hold him like lovers did but he trusted you when you said that it was okay.
Lost in his thoughts, he tugged lightly on Jungkookâs hair, who let out a sound that lit a fire inside him. It was a moan, Jungkook had moaned.
His cheeks growing red, he looked at Jimin like a deer caught in headlines. âIâm sorry! I didnât- I shouldnât-â
âJungkookie, itâs okay.â
âNo, no. Iâm sorry,â he continued quickly. âI donât know why I did that. Iâm-â
âJungkook,â Jimin said more firmly. âItâs okay. Really. I didnât mind. You⊠sounded good.â
âGood?â Jungkook asked confused. And his eyes, how could his eyes hold so many stars inside them?
Slowly, Jimin tugged at his hair again. âYeah, good. I liked it.â
âOh.â
They looked at each other and the world faded around them. There was only them, them and the heat brewing between them.
âDo you-â Jimin looked away. He couldnât just ask him like that. But what else could he say? âI love you, I love you so much. I never want you to forget. Anything that may happen, Iâll still love you.â
âI love you too, you know I do. You are my Jiminie. I would do anything for you.â He bit his bottom lip and Jimin wished he was the one doing it instead. âDid something happen?â
âNo, I just wanted you to know,â he said, cupping Jungkookâs face. His skin was the highest quality of silk and satin under his hand. âIâm sorry. Iâm sorry Iâm so difficult, so⊠scarred.â
Jungkookâs hand covered his and his gaze was unyielding, it didnât allow him to look away. âNever apologize for that. Never. You arenât difficult, you are incredible. You are strong, stronger than I could ever hope to be. Your scars donât define you. I met you with your scars and I love you with them all the same. I donât care if I have to be a little more careful or if I have to hold you a little closer sometimes. Just being close to you is all I need.â
There was a stinging behind Jiminâs eyes. âMy baby,â he said like a prayer. An invisible thread pulled him closer to Jungkook until only a breath separated them. âCan I kiss you?â
âKiss me?â
Jimin hated the doubt and the fear in his voice, he grieved that he had been the one to put it there. âI want to, I promise. Itâs okay, I talked with Y/N. Iâve been so stupid. I want to kiss you so much, baby.â
âPlease. Please, kiss me,â he said, voice breaking.
Their lips came together softly. There was no rush, no harshness, only love and patience. He was warm, warmer than he had ever felt. He was safe in Jungkookâs arms, hidden away in the Castle, in their home. Sweetness coated his lips. He might not deserve this, might be too broken for this but he never wanted to let go.
Two tears rolled down his cheeks. Catharsis.
Jungkook pulled back in panicked haste. âDid I hurt you? Did-â
Jimin let his tears run their course down to his neck in favor of cupping Jungkookâs face. âYou could never hurt me. Theyâre happy tears. Iâm very happy.â
The tension in Jungkookâs face eased and Jimin pulled him closer again. As he kissed him, he tasted love and freedom. He tasted of healing.

The grand piano stood by the glass wall in the living room, polished until the black surface reflected the light like a mirror. It was a thing of beauty, a gem dipped in luxury to decorate a rich household. For Yoongi, it was so much more.
It was a few hours until you would be back home and the sun was setting behind the forest. The lights were off in the living room and it was painted in the red, gold and pink of the sunset. You would be back later than usual, the filming schedule was packed for the day and after that was done you would visit the headquarters of the production company. You had told them to eat dinner without you.
Yoongiâs fingers flew over the black and white keys. He closed his eyes and focused on the music. Each note was a bright light in the darkness behind his eyelids. It was easy to get lost in the music, in the feelings it evoked and in the pictures it weaved.
He heard it when Taehyung arrived. He didnât speak, gave him space to go away if he wanted or simply listen in silence. The melody grew more tender.
Taehyung didnât go away, he drew closer. He hesitated before sitting on the bench next to him, leaving a small space between them. The song blended into the next one and the next one until the familiar stiffness spread over Yoongiâs fingers and he stopped.
Outside, the reds and golds had turned into purples and deep blues. Yoongi would have to turn on the lights soon.
âDo you want to try?â Yoongi asked when the silence stretched and Taehyung didnât seem to find the words he was looking for.
Taehyung looked at the piano in quiet wonder. âCan I?â
He was so young and it made Yoongi furious that some bastards had carved the innocence and joy out of him. He wanted to find the monsters who had done this to him and tear them apart limb by limb.
His long fingers hovered over the keys. âHow?â
âJust do whatever feels right.â
Taehyung pressed the keys one by one at first, the faint lines of a smile appearing on his face at every new sound. Progressively he got braver, pressing keys together and creating disjointed melodies.
âTogether?â Taehyung asked shyly.
Yoongi couldnât say no.

It was the second time Taehyung was in Jungkookâs atelierâonly recently had Jungkook started thinking of it like that, before it was the atelierâbut he was looking around him like it was a fairytale and everything was made of magic. Jungkook guessed he must have looked a little like that as well the first time you had shown him the room and told him it was his to do as he pleased. Athens and the Parthenon stretching on the wall never failed to inspire wonder and a deep respect in him, regardless of how long it had been since the first time he walked inside.
Everything else in the room was quite different from that first day. The once pristine and unused room was now splattered in paint. It was everywhere, on the floor and the cabinets and on the many newspapers that he used to cover everything. The first time he had stained the floor with paint, he had gone to you with teary eyes, lowered ears, and a hundred apologies on the tip of his tongue. You had simply laughed and told him that the room was his and he could paint the whole floor if he wanted to. The only thing you asked of him was to be careful of the wall painting. Jungkook would have never touched it in the first place.
Finished canvases were leaning against the cabinets and the walls. Most of them were of places Jungkook found beautiful, the Eiffel Tower, the Parthenon, a neighborhood in Amsterdam he had seen in one of your photos. There were also a few paintings of the pack, you and Seokjin cooking in the kitchen, Yoongi playing the piano, Namjoon and Hoseok under the large tree in the garden, Taehyung with Alice at the lake, and Jimin smiling so wide his eyes turned into crescent moons.
Jungkook longed for Jimin with an insatiable hunger. Now that he had gotten a taste of him once and Jimin told him he wanted it, now that there was no guilt and anguish, he couldnât get enough of him. He wanted to always be touching him, holding him, and scenting him. His scent was like an aphrodisiac to him and he was addicted.
However, when Taehyung had shyly asked about his atelier, he was compelled to show it to him. It wasnât often that Taehyung asked for anything and although he hadnât specifically asked to see the room, Jungkook knew he would like it. Taehyungâs smile was also addicting and rare like a precious gem. So, he had left Jimin with Seokjin to cook in the kitchen and had taken Taehyungâs hand and climbed down the stairs. His hand was soft and he could still feel its ghost on his palm.
He was right, Taehyungâs smile was worth it. It was a tiny one, a small curve of his lips, but it was stunning.
His tiger ears twitched when his eyes landed on the painting of him. He approached slowly, taking it in. A hand reached out but he drew it back before it could touch the canvas.
In the painting, Alice was grinning brightly at Taehyung, one of her rainbow butterfly hair-clips clipped on his dark hair. But what Jungkook loved the most about it was Taehyungâs smile. For the first time, with Alice, Taehyung looked genuinely happy. The painting didnât do the moment justice, he hadnât managed to capture the tiger hybrid perfectly. He had taken a picture of the two of them and used it as reference but it was difficult, almost impossible, to immortalize Taehyungâs beauty in that moment.
âDo you like it?â Jungkook asked gently.
Taehyung startled as if the painting had enchanted him and Jungkookâs voice broke the spell. He hugged himself with one hand, almost like he wanted to stop himself from touching the painting. âItâs⊠beautiful.â
âIt was a beautiful moment,â Jungkook agreed. âAlice is incredible, right?â
Taehyung nodded slowly. âI⊠have it. The butterfly. She doesnât want back⊠it.â
They both looked at the painting. Jungkook wasnât sure if they were seeing the same thing but maybe they were.
âDo you want to paint again?â he asked, breaking the silence. He took down the half-finished canvas of a beach from the easel and replaced it with a blank canvas.
Taehyung didnât hesitate to agree this time. They picked up different brushes, chose a few tubes of oil paint and set themselves to work. Jungkook showed him how to paint a sunsetâhe had perfected the skill through a lot of observation and many YouTube videos. Taehyung seemed to have fun blending the colors and drawing the shapes of semi-transparent clouds.
They stayed in the atelier for a few hours until they were called for dinner by Hoseok, whose heart-shaped smile at seeing them together in their paint-splattered clothes rivaled the beauty of the sunset. After the meal, Jungkook asked if Taehyung would like to take the painting of him and Alice to his room. They hung it on the wall with Yoongiâs help and went back to the garden together.

You were filming at Monmouth Manufacturing for the day. They were the last couple of scenes you would be filming there for Season 1. Hopefullyâand most probablyâ, you would see it again next year, or the year after that, filming for Season 2. First, you would have to finish Crooked Kingdom and then towards the end of the year, maybe you could work on the Raven Cycle. Your schedule was already crazy and you were troubled about what that meant for the next year.
A headache was brewing behind your temples and you were trying very hard to ignore it. You had been at the studios since 6 oâclock in the morning and you were going crazy. It would be one of those 15-16 hour days. You could see it coming. The executive producer of Paper Hearts had called to tell you that you were desperately needed for a board meeting for the next season. They had changed the time of the meeting to later in the afternoon to fit your schedule, which proved that it was important. You dreaded the drive to the other side of Los Angeles and what was sure to be a very long discussion.
During your lunch break, you texted Namjoon that you would be late again. He didnât say anything but you knew he was disappointed. He had to be. You had barely spent any time with them in the past few days. There were also matters you still had to discuss. You hadnât told the other hybrids about the thing between the three of you and they deserved to know. Your headache got worse just thinking about it.
You flipped through the script during a small break, sipping on your third cup of coffee of the day. It was making you jittery but the other option was falling asleep in your chair.
âOkay, I think we are good to move on to the next scene,â you told Will. âAnd then weâre done for the day.â
âShould I get someone to call the actors?â
âYeah, see if they are done with makeup and send them in.â You rolled your neck and let out a heavy sigh. âAll things considered itâs going pretty well.â
Will chuckled as he motioned for someone from the staff to come closer. âFor someone whoâs been here since six, youâre doing remarkably well.â
You waited for him to send the man to fetch the actors before speaking again. âWeâll see about that when weâre done with this scene. If Iâm on my feet and awake by then, I deserve an award.â
Will shrugged, leaning back on his chair. âIâve seen you do worse. Do you remember when we were filming âThe Grand Masqueradeâ in Prague? You were running on three hours of sleep a night for a week. I thought you would fall asleep during filming and wouldnât wake up for a couple of days.â
âI was younger then,â you shrugged it off. You eyed the script again, focusing on your notes. â I donât have the same energy.â
âIt was three years ago.â
âThree years can be a long time.â
You could understand that better than anyone, considering that this year sometimes seemed like a decade to you. In a year, your whole life had changed. You were different, everything was different from last year. Three years could be a very long time, indeed. But also the blink of an eye.
One of the actors arrived and you both greeted him. Soon, he was swept away by the movement director.
âI think you need another break,â Will declared in all of his dramatic glory.
You tapped your long nails on your plastic cup, the action was strangely soothing. âI think I need another coffee.â
âYou certainly need a break,â Will insisted. âAnd you certainly donât need another coffee.â
He had noticed your restlessness, then. âWe just came back from a break. And there is no time for another one. After we are done here, promotions for Six of Crows begin then there is the premiere and the tour and they are getting everything ready to begin filming for Season 6 of Paper Hearts. And Crooked Kingdom is next year and I am very behind on that.â
Willâs face did that thing he did whenever he was done with you, his features slacking like he was bored and a little irritated. âYou canât be behind on something that hasnât even started yet. Be serious.â
âI am. Deadly.â
Will rolled his eyes. âBreak. You need a break.â
The rest of the actors arrived then and the subject was dropped in favor of going over the details of the scene with them. They took their places and filming began. There was a place where the scene kept being snagged and you had to go over it four times to get it right and five more to perfect it.
By the end, you were running like you were being hunted to find John and drive to the company building. The meeting as you had expected was long and tiring. At least, it was a productive one. You discussed the script, the new additions, and the schedule. You shared a few worries and disagreements you had and you mostly managed to find the middle ground. Another meeting would be held in a week before filming would officially start in a few weeks.
It was past eleven when you opened the door of the Castle. No one was in the living room, which was to be expected.
âIâm back!â you shouted, even though no one would hear you if they were in the garden. The night was warm and your skin felt stifling. Sweat dotted your forehead and the change of temperature, when you walked inside the air-conditioned Castle, sent a shock through your system. Your legs had turned to stones and you struggled to take off your shoes.
All you wanted was to fall asleep. You opened the balcony door and shouted again that you were back and that you would be in your room. You closed it before you could hear any replies.
In your room, you had to force yourself to change into your pajamas instead of falling face-first onto your bed in your dirty clothes. You didnât have the energy to take a shower like you usually did at the end of the day. Your appetite had also disappeared. You hadnât eaten dinner but you werenât hungry. You were taking off your makeup in the bathroom when there was a knock on your door.
For a moment, you debated not answering but you dismissed the thought instantly.
âCome in,â you called. âIâm in the bathroom.â
You heard the door open and close again. You dragged the cotton pad roughly across your face, you didnât have the patience to be gentle and it left your skin red. Some days it was just too sensitive.
âAre you alright?â The care in Seokjinâs voice tugged at the tight knot in your chest, loosened it. You glanced at the door but he wasnât there.
Most of the makeup was gone from your face and you looked like a mess. You threw the cotton pads in the bin and washed your face quickly to get rid of the mascara under your eyes and any stubborn residues of makeup.
Seokjin was standing by your vanity, waiting for you. It wasnât often that he came to your room. You werenât used to seeing him there but it felt right.
âFor someone who has been running around for more than sixteen hours, I am peachy,â you tried to joke but the delivery was lacking. It was confirmed by Seokjinâs frown.
âThatâs too much, even for you. That isnât healthy.â
âIt is what it is,â you said, trying not to sound defensive. âIt isnât something I havenât done before. And tomorrowâs schedule is easier so itâs alright.â
That didnât seem to do anything to ease his mind. âBecause you did it before, it doesnât mean you should keep doing that.â
You rubbed your temples, your headache was getting worse. âThere are things that need to get done. I canât just stop because Iâm tired. I get calls all day and my inbox is full of emails I havenât answered yet. I have a million things on my plate, I canât ignore them.â
âI know,â Seokjin said, his tone softer. He came closer to you and took your hand in his. The touch was grounding. You hadnât realized you were spiraling until your feet were planted on the earth again. âWe know how important your work is and how much effort you have put in to be where we are. Itâs admirable and itâs incredible that youâve managed to do all this. But your health is important too. You canât keep running with an empty tank. You need to rest too.â
You heaved a sigh and let your head fall forward to rest on his chest. Your nose wasnât as sensitive as a hybridâs but breathing in the familiar sweetness calmed you. He hugged you and drew you closer to him, his hand kneading the tense muscles of your shoulders and the back of your neck.
âWe missed you,â he said almost in a whisper.
âYou always miss me.â
Seokjin stayed quiet but you both knew. They always missed you because you were always gone.
âYou should eat something before you fall asleep. Yoongi and I made gnocchi with prosciutto and parmesan and garlic bread with mozzarella. I can bring it here but I think it would be best if you ate in the kitchen. Everyone wants to see you but they donât want to bother you.â
The simple act of going to the kitchen sounded like climbing a mountain. Your bed looked too attractive, only a meter away and very very soft. Your eyelids were heavy with the need to sleep and yetâŠ
âIâll come to the kitchen,â you said. Having woken up at five, you hadnât seen anyone before leaving. The thought of not seeing them at all today left a sour taste in your mouth. âBut can we stay here? For a bit?â
Seokjin placed a tender kiss on the crown of your head. âOf course. For as long as you want.â
You lost track of time in his arms but no more than five minutes must have passed by the time you pulled back with a heavy heart. A temporary balm had been applied to the ailments of the day. You could hold yourself up for a few more minutes to eat a little, you had been doing it all day.
Your legs were as heavy as concrete walking to the kitchen. You had to concentrate on putting one foot in front of the other, otherwise, you might just collapse. There was noise coming from the kitchen but your tired mind couldnât register what they were saying.
You were surprised to see that everyone was there waiting for you, even Taehyung. Yoongi placed the plates in front of your seat and Jimin added the cutlery. Everyone else was sitting around the table in their usual stools.
Their greetings were quieter than usual and you guessed that they were conscious of how tired you were. You gave them the warmest smile you could master and patted Hoseokâs hair as you passed by to take your seat. The aroma of the food made your stomach growl, you hadnât realized how hungry you had been before. Your appetite was back. Everything looked incredible as always and you couldnât wait to dig in.
âAre you all just going to look at me while I eat?â you asked, picking up your fork.
The hybrids looked sheepish at your question.
âWe just wanted to see you,â Jungkook said. âYou left too early in the morning.â
You had to compose yourself to pierce a couple of gnocchi with your fork and not sigh out loud. Yoongiâs eyes were heavy on you, they were the ones you could detect with the most ease. You were the most aware of him.
âI had too much to do today. They have been bugging me from the studios for days. If I didnât start early, I would have never finished. And I prefer an early morning to a late night. I tend to work better in the morning.â
You forced the fork to your mouth. You were ravenous but the conversation stalled your appetite.
âI would think that this was considered a late night,â Namjoon pointed out.
The taste, as expected, was heavenly. The creaminess of the parmesan sauce was tied perfectly with the savory crispy prosciutto. In your condition, you felt like it was wasted on you. As hungry as you were, you just wanted to put your fork down and go to sleep. But you couldnât do that. You were better than that, you could eat something and then you could go to sleep. You could do that, you had done this before. Hadnât you?
âThis isnât a late night,â you said after you swallowed the delicious bite. You had to eat another one. And another one. âLate nights can be anything from three a.m. to the next morning. This doesnât happen often but I really had too many things to do. This is just for a few weeks because weâre moving very fast with the Raven Boys and filming for Season 6 of Paper Hearts will start soon. There are a lot of meetings and things they need my opinion on, it will actually be better once filming starts. They donât need me as much then.â
You pushed the gnocchi around and you could tell they didnât believe you without looking at them. It was true that your workload was heavier these days but you couldnât exactly guarantee that it would get better soon. Filming for the Raven Cycle had been going exceptionally well and it was moving faster than you had originally planned. It would be wrapping up by the end of September or by early October at the latest. Wrapping up was a lot of work, the beginning and the end were the busiest parts.
The rest of autumn was going to be very difficult too. There was the premier as well, which added to your workload greatly. It would take up all of November and the work for it would start from October. Maybe December would be calmer. Maybe.
You ate the rest of your meal in relative silence. They didnât talk more about you leaving early and coming back late although you knew they wanted to. Their voices were quiet as they talked about anything from witches in cartoons to color theory. You let their words play in the background like the sound from a TV as you tried to eat as much as you could.
The result was a half-finished plate of gnocchi and one less garlic bread with mozzarella. Your eyes were closing involuntarily by then, staying closed for longer periods each time. If you didnât go to sleep now, you would fall face-first into the gnocchi.
You slid off your seat and balanced yourself on numb legs. âThank you for this, it was delicious. But I really need to go to sleep now.â
âItâs okay,â Seokjin said, glancing at half of the food still on the plate. âYou should rest.â
âAt what time do you start work tomorrow?â Yoongi asked. He had been silent during your dinner and his voice rang louder than the rest to your ears.
It must have taken a few seconds to navigate the fog in your mind before you could answer. âFilming starts around nine, so I should be there by eight. Half past eight at most.â
âThatâs still too early,â Hoseok said, frowning.
You waved their worries off. They had better things to worry about than the job you had been doing for half of your life. âIt isnât too early. I can sleep for a decent number of hours before I have to get ready. Itâs alright, really. Goodnight, everyone. Sweet dreams.â
With effort, you dragged your body to your bedroom. You didnât bother turning on the lights and stumbled to your bed guided only by the moonlight. There wasnât a point in closing the blinds when you would wake up around the time the sun was rising. The light of your phone was too bright in the darkness and it made your eyes sting as you set an alarm.
A few messages caught your attention but a knock stopped you before you could open them.
âCome in,â you called, setting your phone aside. The door opened and the light from the hallway slipped in, outlining the silhouettes of the two hybrids. âIs everything okay?â
They both nodded and Jimin took a few steps into the room. âCan we sleep here tonight?â
âBoth of you?â you asked, half-suppressing a yawn. Unlike Jimin, Jungkook hadnât slept in your room before and the only time you had shared a bed was in Virginia.
Jungkookâs bunny ears drooped. âI can go, I donât mind. I just missed you.â
âSorry, that isnât how I meant it.â Your surroundings were a bit blurry, the minutes stretched but were also impossibly short. It felt a little like life was a dream when you were tired like this. âCome in, both of you. And close the door behind you. It is blinding me a bit.â
They hurried inside and did as you told them. You couldnât see them well as they moved through the darkness. They surrounded you, lying on different sides. Jimin didnât hesitate to draw closer, throwing an arm over your stomach. Jungkook was a little stiffer on your left like he didnât know how to situate himself. You found his hand, intertwining your fingers, and a quiet sigh escaped his lips.
It felt right, lying between them. Like that was how it was meant to be. But maybe that was the exhaustion talking, the dream realm slipping into the waking world.
âI missed you too,â you whispered. âNow sleep. I have an alarm set for the morning.â

Summer bled seamlessly into autumn. The change wasnât apparent in the Castle, autumn had only arrived in name. The heat was still there and would remain for some time. During the days, it still made sweat drip down your temples the few times you filmed outside the studios but the nights were comfortable and moon-bright.
You had a couple of hours free between takes and nothing to do so you got into your car (John had taken the day off to spend some time with Alice) and started the engine. âNothing to doâ was a relative term of course. There were many things you could be doing, countless extra little tasks that crowded your thoughts, but you disregarded all of them. You had been spending whole days away from home and you were beginning to feel guilty about it.
On your way back, you stopped by your favorite homemade gelato shop. In San Diego, you had gone for gelato the first day and the hybrids had loved it. You had made it a habit to get gelato at the beginning of each day during ComicCon, it was your little ritual. You had ordered gelato a couple of times to the Castle as well but with eight people, it didnât last more than a day.
There were dozens of flavors behind the display case, all of them looking delectable. You got a wide variety, remembering the flavors they liked the most. You picked hazelnut, tiramisu, chocolate chip cookie, almond, caramel, coconut, cream and sour cherry, nutella, and vanilla and asked for 1 kilo of each to be delivered to your house. It was too hot and your house was too far to transport them in your car.
You didnât have to wait more than a few minutes outside the gate before the delivery boy arrived. You got the bags full of gelato containers from him and sent him off with a hefty tip. The Castle was a long way from the heart of the city and anyone willing to make deliveries there deserved a nice tip.
Unlocking and opening the door was a struggle but you managed. You shouted you were back and fast-walked down the stairs, the plastic bags digging into your hands. On the second level, you were faced with Jungkook, who was also climbing the stairs to reach you. He looked as if he was ready to attack you with a hug before noticing the bags.
âA little help?â you asked, raising the bags a little higher. Your arms protested loudly.
Jungkook quickly took most of the bags from you and if you hadnât been the one carrying them before, you would have believed they were light as a feather with the way he was holding them. âWhat are all these?â he asked, peeking into the bags. His eyes sparkled and his smile widened in realization when he spotted the containers. âIs thatâ?â
âGelato,â you said, a little proud of yourself for thinking of making the stop on your way back.
Jungkookâs steps turned into little hops. âYou are the best! How much did you get? Are these all different flavors?â
âYou will seeâŠâ
Jungkook made a sound close to a petulant whine. âCome on,â he said, dragging the vowels. âWhat are they? Did you get hazelnut?â
âWeâre almost there. Youâll see in a minute.â The garden was coming into view as you climbed down to the last level but Jungkook still turned back to pout at you. âDramatic bunny,â you muttered lowly but not low enough for his enhanced hearing not to pick it up. You didnât mind, his giggles were cute.
At the bottom of the stairs, Namjoon and Seokjin were waiting for you.
Seokjin squeezed your wrist in greeting before saying, âHe is a very dramatic bunny.â
âHey! You should be on my side!â
Seokjin raised his eyebrows. âAnd why is that?â And that set off a round of bickering as they walked to the table to set down the bags.
Despite your protests, Namjoon took the last bags from you. âYou should accept a little help from time to time,â he said firmly. You knew that he meant it for more than this. You decided to ignore it for now, you would overthink this later.
âEveryone, gather around! I brought gelato!â you called.
In a few minutes, everyone was gathered around the table. Hoseok, upon seeing the many containers of gelato, had done a happy dance, kissed your cheek and ran upstairs with Seokjin to get bowls and spoons. Jimin had wrapped himself around your back and was licking his lips, which was highly distracting. You shouldnât be thinking about this.
Taehyung was the quietest one, as he usually was. He was sitting next to Yoongi, looking at all the containers with parted lips.
âI got gelato for us,â you told him. âIt is really good. I got a lot of flavors so you can try as many as you want.â
âGelato,â Taehyung repeated softly, gazing at the containers spread over the table.
Hoseok and Seokjin arrived with eight bowls, too many spoons and three ice cream scoopsâyou didnât even know you had that manyâand set them down around the table. You busied yourself with opening all the containers. You already knew which flavors you wanted so you grabbed one of the scoops and served yourself three scoops of ice cream.
Jimin had hooked his chin over your shoulder and wasnât making any move to serve himself. That was up to you then.
âWhich flavor do you want?â you asked him, dipping the scoop into the cup of water.
He rubbed his cheek against your shoulder lazily. âHmmm, I think I want to try a few before I decide.â
You decided to indulge him, you liked it when he got playful and joked with you. You preferred when he was confident and asked for what he wanted. It was beautiful to witness how much he had changed through the months. You dipped a spoon into the flavors in your bowl first and brought them to his mouth. He savored each spoonful, humming and licking his full lips. He was so close to you, if you turned completely your noses would touch. How did you always end up in these situations lately?
âI want that too,â Jungkook said, pouting and pointing at your spoon. He was sitting at the bench and he had his own bowl in front of him, filled with four scoops of gelato.
âYou want almond?â you asked.
âNo, I want to be fed too.â
âYou really are a baby,â Seokjin said. âIs that whatâs going to be happening now? Whatever one has the other wants too?â
Jungkook looked away, taking his spoon again disappointed. âNo, it just looked nice. It felt nice to be cared for when we were at the lake. If you donât want to, thatâs okay. I just wanted to ask.â
At the lake, you had been feeding them strawberries dipped in chocolate and your mind had run too wild. You should stop thinking about that. âI want to, you are just a little far. I canât really reach.â
Jimin was about to say something, probably offer a solution but before he could, Seokjin had picked up Jungkook and plopped him down in his lap.
âHere, I will feed you, you big baby. Is this alright?â he asked, ever caring.
Jungkook squirmed a little but seemed pleased, a light flush settling on his cheeks. âYes, of course.â He was as tall as Seokjin but in his lap, he looked much smaller. He opened his mouth obediently when Seokjin brought the spoon to his lips.
Your eyes strayed to Taehyung, you were hyper-aware of him whenever you were in the same place. His eyes had that look that you couldnât understand, it was there every time you interacted with the other hybrids lately. They were telling you that he was opening up more these days but to you, he remained a mystery.
In the end, Jimin ate most of your gelato and you scooped some chocolate chip cookie into your bowl because you knew how much he liked it. Hoseok and Namjoon closed the containers and carried them upstairs, they returned and went to sit by the pool. Yoongi finished quickly and lied down under the shade of the tree closest to them. Jungkook grew sleepy and turned to the side, laying his head on Seokjinâs shoulder. Jimin joined them, hugging Jungkook from the side.
Taehyung stayed at the bench like he wasnât sure where he should go, his empty bowl in front of him.
âDid you like it?â you asked, gesturing to his bowl. Another reminder of your shortcomings, you didnât even know how much he had progressed in English.
âYes, thank you,â he replied. The low timbre of his voice surprised you each time. You heard it so rarely that you didnât get the chance to get used to it.
You should make an effort to talk to him, avoiding him would only make matters worse. But you couldnât find anything to say. What exactly could you say to him, who had lived most of his life like a caged animal, who you had bought at an illegal auction?
Suddenly, you had the equivalent of a light bulb lighting up next to your head in a cartoon.
âHobi told me you liked the painting of the pomegranate in the gallery,â you said then realized that pomegranate was probably a word he couldnât understand and proceeded to explain the painting. âIt has glass around it and a hand is holding it. Am I making sense?â
Seokjin looked at you amused but Taehyung nodded in understanding. âIt is beautiful.â
âRight, it is,â you agreed. âThe artist, the one who made it, is holding an exhibition in LA. We could go if you would like.â
You had bought the painting from her long before her fame had grown and spread. There was a magic to the way Eliana Velasco painted, everything came alive under her brush strokes. The painting of the pomegranate had enchanted you and given your history, you had to have it.
âGo?â he repeated, clearly confused.
âYeah, to a place that has many of her paintings. You can see them there. Would you like that?â Talking to him, you were more nervous than at any of the award shows you had attended the past few years, more nervous than during any contract negotiations.
Taehyungâs eyes widened a fraction before he nodded. âCan I⊠see them?â
âOf course,â you said.
Jungkook stirred against Seokjinâs shoulder. âAre we going to an exhibition?â
âIf you want to.â
âAre you going to be there too?â he asked and that was harder to answer. Your schedule was the busiest it had been in months and you were drowning in deadlines and responsibilities. You were saved from answering him by a notification on your phone. The numbers displaying the time showed that you were late to leave. You pocketed your phone and with quick goodbyes, you disappeared.
You were so stupid. You had offered to take Taehyung to an exhibition when work was wrapped around you like a noose. But you had panicked. Eliana had sent you an invitation for the opening night, promising there would be French champagne and hors dâ oeuvres. You had attended plenty of her exhibitions and had many conversations about art and life and their inter-connected philosophy while drinking champagne or wine and staring at paintings.
Although Taehyungâs situation was solved and Amelia had let you know some time ago that legally you were safe, going to the opening night didnât sound like a good idea. There would be many journalists there who would love to write a piece about you and your sudden decision to adopt so many hybrids. They could go without you another day, that wouldnât be too bad. Taehyung looked so hopeful and now that you had said it, you couldnât take it back. You could text Eliana and ask her if she could meet you there one day so you could introduce her to them.
You should try and get some time off.

It was like a curse, to not be able to sleep in the very few hours you could afford to. Your bed was empty and cold and you couldnât get comfortable regardless of how much you twisted and turned. Your limbs were too long and awkward and nothing felt right. All the wild thoughts you couldnât be bothered with during the day showed up one after the other to be examined from every angle and set aside to pick up the next one. It was a losing battle and yet you insisted on fighting it every time before giving in, getting up and popping a pill into your mouth.
You returned the bottle to the cabinet and closed it. After Seoul, for some time it had returned to your bedside table but after a couple of weeks had passed it felt like you were admitting defeat by keeping it there. The image in the mirror was a far cry from the celebrity you were supposed to be. The darkness under your eyes formed bruises, getting worse by the day. Your skin had grown pale and your hair was a mess, you hadnât had enough strength to braid it before attempting to fall asleep.
You considered going back to bed but the pills could take up to an hour to work when your insomnia reached its peak and you were craving a snack. Something small and sweet sounded nice.
Once again, you had returned late and eaten dinner alone. Your appetite was lacking although the food was delicious. Sometimes, it got like that when you were too tired. You had promised yourself to limit early mornings and late nights but that had changed when you had texted Eliana about the exhibition. She had offered to accompany you to the exhibition on one of the days it was closed to the public and you were more than thankful to her but that also meant that you would have to take half the day off.
The TV was on in the living room, subtitles displayed at the bottom of the screen with no sound. Namjoon was sitting on the couch, arms crossed and watching with distracted eyes. Everyone else had departed to their rooms for the night. His ears twitched as you took a few more steps and he turned to look at you.
You waved your hand, trying to offer him a smile. âHey.â
He sat up straighter. âHi. Why are you still awake? Do you need something?â
âJust some water. Maybe a snack.â
âYou were really tired when you went to bed. Did you not fall asleep?â he asked, frowning.
You shrugged. âI couldnât. Itâs one of those nights. If I eat something, maybe I will fall asleep easier. A full stomach and all that.â You didnât mention the pill, it was awkward to do that. âDonât let me disturb you. Iâll just grab something and go back to bed.â
Namjoon got up and in a few strides, he was standing in front of you. He caressed your cheek, searching for something in your eyes. You werenât sure what he could see there. âIâll join you. Letâs sit together for a bit. I havenât seen you properly in a few days.â
âBut you must have stayed back to watch that,â you said. A documentary was playing on the TV, something about Egyptian history.
âIt doesnât matter. I would rather spend my time with you. Unless you donât want to, then Iâll go back to the couch and be very quiet.â
You slid your hand in his, the touch grounding you in a night that felt both like you were wide awake and caught in a blurry dream. âI would like some company. Iâve missed you too. Iâmââ
âDonât say youâre sorry. There is no need for that.â
He leaned down, placing a sweet kiss on your forehead. His lips lingered for a few moments, warmth spreading inside you. You raised your head and captured his lips in a kiss. The worst part was that you couldnât remember how long it had been since you had last shared a kiss. His lips were velvet as you remembered them. This was home. Running back and forth, you had forgotten what it felt like.
You pulled back and grabbed his hand. âLetâs go.â
In the kitchen, Namjoon stood next to you as you rummaged through the cupboards for something that looked appetizing to you. The cupboards were full and yet nothing was calling to you until Namjoon remembered that Seokjin had made ice cream sandwiches with the gelato you had bought and various kinds of cookies. That sounded like heaven so you opened the freezer and chose two of them.
You leaned against the counter, shoulder to shoulder with Namjoon, while you devoured them. Gelato might not have been the best idea to put you to sleep but they tasted heavenly. The pill would start working sooner or later.
âIs it worse today?â he asked. He didnât elaborate further, he didnât have to.
The ice cream sandwiches were gone and you were left holding the plate. You licked your fingers and placed it in the sink. âI have a lot of things on my mind. I should be too tired to think but apparently, Iâm never too tired for that.â
âAnything in particular?â
âEverything, more or less.â You turned to the side, facing him. âThereâs too much to think about and not enough time. Never enough time,â you muttered the last sentence to yourself. If you had all the time in the world it would still not be enough, you would find a way to fill it. âIâve been putting everything off. Everything I donât want to deal with or I donât know how to deal with. And the longer I put it off, the worse it gets.â
He was quiet for a few seconds, taking in what you said and pondering how to reply. It was beautiful, how his mind worked and how attentive he was. âIf there is any way we can help you, anything Iâwe can do, we will. Whatever you want to do, we will support you. Sometimes, in our head, we can make things look bigger, more scary than they are. Do you want to talk about them? Maybe if you talk about what you have to do or what youâre worried about, it will be easier to work out the best way to approach them.â
That was something your therapist used to tell you, that while things festered in your head, they would only get more tangled and more daunting. She had suggested writing them down or talking to her about them. She was right, you knew she was right and that it helped and yet you hadnât stopped to do that.
You took a deep breath, debating if it would be better to find a notebook and figure out your mess on paper instead of dragging Namjoon into it. But there was a part of you that itched to confide in him and give in to the way you felt safe when you were together.Â
âI donât even know where to start,â you confessed.
You started slowly, with your usual worries about Taehyung, how he was adjusting and how little time you were spending with him and if that was for the best. It was the same old spiralling, you had poked and prodded at it so many times and Namjoon must have been bored of listening to the same rehashed concerns, yet he didnât interrupt you. You unravelled steadily, once you started speaking, you couldnât stop. There was the filming for the Raven Cycle, the final touches of Six of Crows, the premiere and the weeks of promotions and the anticipation for the reviews of the critics and the audiences. The book you hadnât finished and the deadline you couldnât meet.
You rubbed your hands over your face. It had been so long since most of those problems had surfaced and you were ashamed that you hadnât faced them yet. âAnd we havenât told anyone about us. We said we would and I know youâre waiting for me but Iâm never here. And I donât know how.â
Namjoon caught your hand and brought it to his lips. Lowering it, his thumb rubbed soothing circles on your skin. âIt doesnât have to be complicated. They will understand and they will be happy for us. You shouldnât let this keep you awake, everything will be alright. They are our pack, this wonât change anything.â
âButâŠâ The anxiety that persisted. âYoongi. What if his reaction is⊠bad. You know what he said.â
âThat was before.â He sounded sure but there was a tightness at his jaw. âIt is different now. He is different, you can see it. He is softer around the edges, he even helps Jin in the kitchen. Heâs settling in.â
âBecause he doesnât know,â you said. âYou remember what he said, right? That night? That I adopted you so I could take my pick and now there is Jin and itâs just too much like that, canât you see it?â
âItâs nothing like that. We bothââ Namjoon stiffened, his gaze locking somewhere towards the entrance. âYoongi?â
Your heart rate sped up, a knot forming in your chest. Yoongi walked in, his socked feet not making a sound. How much had he heard? The last minutes of the conversation replayed in your mind in a panicked mess. What had you said? How long had he been there, listening to you, before Namjoon noticed him? What conclusions would he reach?
Instinctively, you tried to get away from Namjoon but his hold on your hand kept you there.
The pantherâs face didnât give anything away. You couldnât read him regardless of how much you studied him. You didnât know his tells, if he had any. His expression was a carefully curated mask of apathy and you couldnât see past it. Or you didnât dare to try. Maybe you were too afraid of what you would find.
âHow did you know it was me?â he asked, voice missing some of its smoothness.
Namjoon held your hand tighter. âYou are the only one who can sneak up on me.â
You swallowed down your anxiety and tried to think of him the way he was the past few months, when he helped you with rearranging your office, him playing the piano in the afternoons, your walk at the lake, the vague memory of him helping you up to your room when you were drunk in Virginia. But they were all pushed back by the memory of his snarl and his sharp teeth that night.
âHow much did you hear?â you asked, forcing your voice to be steady. He was going to learn of it at some point and as scared as you were, you had to face this.
âEnough.â His tail curled behind him and stilled. âYou are afraid of my reaction to something. Is that it?â
Your eyes locked with Namjoonâs and he nodded. This time you werenât going to run. This time would be different. âYes, there is something we wanted to tell you. Something we wanted to tell everyone. I didnât know how to tell you, thatâs all.â
âYou can tell me now,â he said and it sounded almost like a dare. You werenât sure if you were walking into a trap.
Namjoon spoke up before you could. âYou remember that the two of us are⊠We are together, as humans would say, romantically.â Yoongi nodded. You couldnât imagine how he could forget. âThat extends to Jin now. We love him and he loves us.â It was almost like he was challenging him to say anything but Yoongi was quiet.
âWe didnât know how to tell everyone. And youâŠâ You didnât know how to finish.
He scoffed. âI was an asshole.â One side of his lips was twisted up but something about it hurt. âYou didnât want to tell me because I was an asshole when I found out about you two. Worse than an asshole.â He dropped his gaze to the floor, his shoulders were slumped as if in defeat. For a moment, you wished to reassure him but what he was saying was the truth. âI understand. Iâm notâ Iâm happy for you. And Iâm sorry.â
He turned to leave but, through your confusion, you knew you didnât want him to go.
âWait,â you called. He stopped but didnât turn around. âLetâs talk. We need to talk.â
Yoongi looked at you over his shoulder. This time, you studied him without your heavy-duty lenses, without the fear of discovery. Like the expression of an actor, you picked apart the tiniest details to paint a picture. When your own barriers were gone, it was easier to see.
âWhat is there to talk about?â he asked.
âA lot. Things we should have talked about sooner.â Communication was a golden rule in your handbook and you used to be good at it, you tried to be good at it. The misunderstanding trope was overused and useless when the issue could be resolved with a simple conversation.
It was about time you stopped walking on eggshells.
âWe never truly talked about it,â you started. âAnd I didnât really want to because things were going so well. They are going well. But you are my family now.â His lips parted, only slightly but you caught it. âI canât know how all of you see it, if itâs the same for you, but thatâs the way I feel. And I want to be honest with you. I still think about what you said in the garden and sometimes it affects me more than I would like. However, I would like to put it behind us but I want to know what you think.â
His eyes were sharp but you werenât fooled this time. âCan we? Can we really put it behind us?â
Namjoon was silent next to you, he was letting you handle it.
âI think we are already beginning to.â You took a deep breath in preparation. There was a question that could make or break this peace between you and you were both dreading and dying to ask. âDo you think that Iâm taking advantage of them because I love them romantically?â
His eyes widened. âNo,â he denied sharply. âNo, of course I donât.â
It was like a knot unravelling in your heart. Although there was a part of you that had known, the relief was still there. âThen we can move past it. We can try again. We are already trying again.â
âHow?â Yoongi asked and he sounded smaller, much smaller than you were used to.
The pills were beginning to act, it was a light drowsiness at first. You had to do this quickly before you fell asleep and crumbled down on the floor.
âThe same way we are doing now. By doing our best.â
âI am tryingâ His hands clenched into fists and loosened again. âIâm sorry. For everything.â
âYou donât need to be. Not anymore. As long as I know that we are fine.â Your eyes were growing heavier and the fog was slipping in. âI think we should go to bed now,â you said. It was getting more and more difficult to open your eyes.
You must have stumbled or something because you heard Yoongi ask, âAre you alright?â at the same time as Namjoonâs âDo you want help?â
You waved them both off. âIâm fine. Itâs the pills.â It was easier to admit when you were almost asleep. One moment your feet were on the floor and the next you were up in the air. âJoon?â
âIâm taking you to your room. Itâs time for sleep.â One of his arms was under your knees and the other was holding you close to his body.
âNamjoon, I can walk,â you protested weakly. Namjoon shushed you and you let it go. You were so incredibly sleepy and you were safe there. You relaxed in his arms and finally closed your eyes.

Most of the flowers were drooping in the garden of the Castle. Namjoon and Jimin were attempting to keep them alive for as long as possible before fall swept them away. They cut off the dead leaves, watered the plants and applied the appropriate fertilisers. There were also varieties that lasted all year and the gardener had taught them how to take care of them too.
âThese wonât last much longer,â Jimin said, running his fingers gently over the petals of a slowly wilting flower.
âThey will bloom again in spring,â Namjoon reassured him. âEach season has its beauty and these belong to spring and summer. Autumn has its own colors too but they are different.â
Jimin pulled his hand back and grabbed the watering can. âI know, but I will miss them.â
Namjoon patted his head and Jimin preened under his touch, chasing his hand. He was too cute sometimes and Namjoon adored him. âItâs okay to miss it but you can also be happy about the new things that are coming. Miss Roberts said she will bring sunflowers and hydrangeas to plant next week, it will add some color. When something ends, something else begins.â
Jimin giggled, watering the flowers although they would be dead next week. âNora has told you many times to call her by her name.â
Namjoon rubbed the back of his head. âI forgot. Iâm trying.â
Yoongi came out of the house, a book in his hand. He had been visiting the library more lately. Namjoon had been wondering where he had been. The rest of the pack had holed up in the cinema room to watch a comedy and, like the two of them, Yoongi had opted out but they hadnât seen him since.
âYoongi!â Jimin called, waving with the hand that wasnât holding the watering can. âCome here. Sit with us, we are almost done.â
Yoongi paused, glancing at the table and benches on the other side of the garden.
âCome on,â Namjoon called for him as well. That was enough to sway Yoongiâs decision, who made his way to them.
Jimin bounced up to him, grabbing his hand and dragging him to the flower bushes they were tending to. Yoongi grumbled about the rough treatment but Namjoon wasnât fooled, the upturn of his lips was small but unmistakable.
Jimin explained to him what they had been doing so far and Yoongi listened to him attentively.
âThey are beautiful. You have been doing a really good job. Both of you,â he said, his eyes darting to Namjoon.
He was tense, it wasnât obvious but Namjoon could pick it up. He gave him a smile, hoping he would relax. Yoongi confused him but he thought he could understand him a little better now. âThank you. What are you reading?â
âOh, this?â Yoongi raised the book a little and shrugged. âI saw it and I thought it was interesting.â
âI havenât seen that before,â Namjoon said.
The cover was painted in shades of yellow and orange, framing two pyramids. Without saying anything, Yoongi handed him the book. It was called The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and it was a relatively short book. He turned it around to look at the synopsis and Jimin peeked at it over his shoulder. Namjoon wondered if you had read it or if it had been sitting there unread on your shelves for years. There were so many books in your library and you had admitted that you hadnât read most of them, but you had also told them that once upon a time you used to read a hundred books a year.
âIt does sound interesting,â Namjoon commented, passing back the book. âYou should tell me if it is any good when you finish it.â
Yoongi looked down at the bookâs cover. âI will.â
Jimin declared that they were done with gardening for the day and grabbed both of their hands, pulling them to the shade underneath one of the trees. They sat down and he situated himself with his head in Namjoonâs lap and his legs in Yoongiâs. Yoongi cracked open his book and began to read while Jimin talked about flowers.
âŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ©
âAnd⊠CUT!â you called. It was repeated again by Will and the actors relaxed, the expressions of their characters wiped clean. âThat will be it for today. Thank you everyone!â
The crew buzzed as the cameras and the sound systems were turned off. People were talking to their earpieces and others were giving pats on the back to each other for another successful day on set. Crew members passed by and offered their congratulations to you.
âWhat are you rushing for?â Will asked.
You continued throwing everything carelessly into your backpack. âIâm visiting the gallery today, remember?â
âRight, thatâs today,â he said, snapping his fingers. Some things stuck with you in entertainment. For example, the overexaggerated gestures. âI thought you had a company meeting dressed like this. A very important one.â
In the morning, you had put more thought into your outfit compared to a simple filming day. You were wearing tan trousers and a form-fitting black top embellished by a crossover belt that wrapped around the body and was tied together with a golden Medusa head emblem. The heels, the golden earrings, bracelets, and rings confirmed that filming wasnât the only thing on your schedule.
You slung your backpack over your shoulder (you would switch it later with a black Dior bag you had in your car). âNo meetings for me today. I really have to go. Iâll catch up with you tomorrow.â
âHave a good time, boss!â
You greeted any familiar faces on your way to your car and sent a quick message to Namjoon that you would be picking them up soon. The 8-seater car was an impulse purchase at a time when you had a larger friend group. You hadnât used it much, only for a couple of short trips to private beaches.
You checked your appearance in the visor mirror and reapplied some powder and lipstick. You looked good enough, there wasnât much more you could do.
The hybrids were waiting by the fountain. They had dressed nicely for the occasion, wearing some of the more formal outfits you had bought for them. You could feel the excitement in the air as they climbed into the car. It had been a long time since you had gone to the city like this. Jimin was quick to slide into the passenger seat, followed by a little happy dance at his success.
The exhibition was taking place in Central Los Angeles, housed in a tall and wide building that appeared to be made up of several cubes that jutted out of the main structure. Jungkook and Hoseok had their phones out, taking photos of the strange building. Distantly, you remembered coming here before but you couldnât place when or why.
Eliana was waiting for you inside wearing a simple flowing blue dress and a large smile. You greeted each other with a hug and proceeded to introduce the boys to her. She shook their hands enthusiastically and in a few seconds she had already engaged them in a conversation about art. Usually, she talked quickly like she was rushing to get everything out before she forgot but she was talking slowly now, using simpler words and waiting for Hoseok to translate whenever he deemed he should.
She guided you through the gallery, floating ahead of you. She gave explanations of some of her works while she let others speak for themselves. Taehyungâs eyes were sparkling while she talked, in a way you had never seen before. His smile stayed on during your whole visit, big and boxy, and you finally felt like you were doing something right.
The other hybrids seemed to be enjoying themselves as well. Namjoon was asking plenty of questions about the meaning behind the paintings and her inspiration and Jungkook was very interested in the more technical aspect of her work. She readily answered all of their questions and when you pointed out that Jungkook spent a lot of his time painting, she encouraged him to show her some of his work. Although he was shy, hiding behind his floppy ears at first, Eliana managed to convince him to show her a few of the paintings he had on his phone. She was stunned when you told her he had only been painting for a few months and Jungkook grew even shier when she showered him in compliments.
At the end of the tour, she let you wander the gallery by yourselves for some time and then suggested going to the galleryâs gardens to hang out. The gardens were of considerable size, about as large as the inside of the gallery. Neatly trimmed flower bushes lined the pathways and plenty of modern sculptures decorated the space. A large fountain stood proudly in the middle and there was an artfully made gazebo raised on a platform at a far corner, overlooking the gardens.
You offered to go get some coffee and some baked goods from a nearby bakery/coffee shop you had found on the internet. Eliana protested at first but she gave in quickly at the promise of an iced Spanish latte and muffins. Namjoon volunteered to accompany you, although what surprised you was Yoongi offering to come along.
âYou need more than two people to carry everything,â was the only explanation you got. You couldnât deny that he was right.
He hadnât been acting any different towards you since you had let him know about the nature of your relationship with Seokjin, so you acted the same way you always did too. His quiet acceptance was more than enough for you and it was a great weight off your shoulders.
You were talking about the exhibition, not surprised that Yoongi had been paying close attention to the paintings as he recalled his favorites, when a call of your name surprised you. The voice was familiar and, for a few seconds, you couldnât place it. Until you could. And the peace froze over.
You turned around to find Jacob waving at you in the quiet street. His hair was cut much shorter than the last time you had seen him and his white loose pants and half-unbuttoned shirt made him look like he had just stepped off a yacht party. Maybe he had. His thousand-watt smile, reminiscent of a politician, was fixed firmly on his face.
âHey, I knew it was you,â he said when he caught up with you, like he had won a prize. He pulled you into a quick hug and you didnât know what to do with your hands until he let you go. âHavenât seen you in ages.â
You wiped invisible dust from your trousers. âYeah, Iâve been very busy.â
âYou were never one for rest, right? The woman always running, always working, never has time for anything else,â he joked and it shouldnât bother you the way it did. He gestured to Yoongi and Namjoon, âArenât you going to introduce us?â
Namjoon looked politely curious and Yoongi downright uninterested.
âRight,â you said. âThis is Yoongi and Namjoon. And this is Jacob.â
Their eyes sharpened the moment you uttered the name.
âIâm just Jacob now?â he asked, eyebrows raised. âAfter three years? Not even a friend?â
âI donât know. It isnât like weâve spoken since last year.â
Initially after your breakup, you used to imagine how your next meeting would go and how the two of you would act around each other. Three years was a long time to share your life with someone to then go back to being strangers. You hadnât entertained the idea much since then, you had found yourself thinking about him less and less. Still, whenever you thought about meeting him, you hadnât anticipated the bitterness that grazed your insides.
Jacob chuckled awkwardly. âWell, you said you were busy. I have been busy as well, Iâm working with a few very big names, you know. I got my hands on some of the best songs of the year.â
âIâm sure theyâre great.â
âHavenât you listened to any of them? You must have heard a few of them. They were everywhere.â Jacob was talented enough and well-connected and he sure liked to brag about it. âI asked Zayn and he said you were doing well, working of course. And you got yourself some company too.â
You clenched your jaw to bite back the harshness burning on the tip of your tongue. You hated the way he said it and the way it reminded you of your mother.
âIt was a bit of a surprise, Iâll admit. I donât remember you ever talking about adopting, you didnât seem a big fan of the idea. No offense of course,â he directed the last part to Namjoon and Yoongi.
âThings change,â you said dismissively. âWe have to go. There are people waiting for us.â
Jacobâs smile didnât falter but his eyes narrowed a fraction for only a second. He may only be part of your past but you could still read him well. Was it the same for him? Had he ever been able to read you in the first place?
âOf course,â he said. âIâll see you around.â
âSure.â
You turned around and started walking, Namjoon and Yoongi following you. Last year you loved him enough to move in with him and this year you couldnât stand to be in his presence. You thought you would feel nothing when youâd see him again but the truth was that everything about him irritated you. His poised smile, his bragging, his nonchalance.
Why was he able to get under your skin like this? You were over him, you didnât want anything to do with him. But you were supposed to be civil, uninterested like the heroines who didnât raise more than an eyebrow in the direction of their exes. It irked you and the way he looked at Namjoon and Yoongi irked you more. You had defended him to everyone, he wasnât a bad guy, he didnât treat you badly but as time passed you were starting to realize some things you couldnât see clearly before.
Yoongi was the first one to speak up when you had almost reached the coffee shop, âWhat an asshole.â
âHe isnâtââ You stopped yourself and laughed. âYou know what? He is, a little bit.â
âA little bit?â he repeated, doubtfully.
âI donât want to judge butâŠâ The way Namjoon paused told you everything you needed to know. âI had to try very hard to stop myself from growling at him.â
Yoongi smirked. âDown, wolf.â Namjoon ignored him.
âThank you for not doing that, that wouldnât have ended well. Please, donât growl at people.â
âI donât know if I can promise that.â
Well, you couldnât say that you minded that much. You could admit to yourself that Namjoon growling was kind of hot. And if the situation called for itâŠ
âI didnât like the way he spoke to you,â Namjoon said. âIt was weird. There was something about it that was wrong, almost demeaning.â
âHe can be like that sometimes. Like he is above almost everyone else, like some things are beneath him. He would make those stupid comments and I would always try to ignore them,â He was always supportive of your career and proud of your success but he had never shown interest in any of your other hobbies and likes. Reading was boring, paintings were overrated and overpriced, drinking tea was pretentious. âI never thought I would be one of those shit-talking their exes unless they did something really bad.â
âI support this shit-talking,â Namjoon said.
âI do too,â Yoongi agreed.
It made a strangely pleasant feeling run up your spine. âWeâre here,â you said, instead of continuing the conversation. According to Google Maps, you had arrived at the coffee shop.
As you walked inside, you might have heard Yoongi saying lowly to Namjoon, âI kind of wanted to punch him.â
âŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ© â©âȘâ©âŹâŹâ©âȘâ©
You were sitting on the chair in front of your vanity, braiding your hair and stuck thinking of the same scene. Before going to his room for the night, Taehyung had approached you and thanked you for taking him to the exhibition. His expression was sincere and you finally felt like you were moving in the right direction.Â
When there was a knock at your door, you already knew who it was before you called for them to come in.
âCan we sleep here tonight?â Jimin asked, Jungkook draped over his back.
âWhen have I ever told you no?â you asked, finishing your braid and securing it in place with a silky scrunchy. âGo on.â
They both hopped on the bed, bouncing a little and sharing delightful smiles. You watched them through the mirror as they rolled around, holding each other.
Jimin looked up from where he was tangled with Jungkook, holding your gaze through his reflection. âAre you coming?â
âI am, I am,â you said, putting your brush back in the drawer.
You joined them on the bed, their hands quickly reaching for you and situating you between them like the last time. Jimin purred in contentment, rubbing his face in your collarbones. Jungkook held onto your arm and you could feel his breath caressing your neck with how close he was lying.Â
An unwanted echo of what Jacob had said entered your mind. Always working, never having time for anything else or anyone else, even the ones most important to you. You were gone most of the days and it made sense that they wanted to be close to you at least at night.
âDid you have fun today?â you asked them to distract yourself.Â
âI loved it! Eliana was so nice and her paintings were incredible,â Jimin said. âI took so many photos, my phone must be full of them.â
Jungkook nuzzled up closer to you. âI took many photos too. Can we print the one we took of us all together? I want to put it in our room.â
âYes, please,â Jimin added cutely.
âOf course. You should print a couple more too, if you want, and choose some pretty frames for them. There is a lot of free space in your room.â
They cheered a little. You lied there in comfortable silence but you could detect a nervous energy in the air. It was in the way Jimin was fidgeting with the hem of your silk night shirt and how tightly Jungkook was gripping your arm. You waited until they were ready.
âWe actually⊠we have something to tell you,â Jimin said.
âAnything you want, kitten,â you said, running your fingers through his hair. You could see how the use of the nickname affected him, squirming a little as his smile grew sweeter. âYou know you can tell me anything.â
âI justââ He looked at Jungkook, who gave him an encouraging nod. âI kissed him, we kissed. And⊠it makes me very happy.â
Jungkook caught Jiminâs hand that was pulling at your shirt and intertwined their fingers, laying their joint hands on your stomach. âHe makes me very happy too,â he said in a small voice.
The new knowledge was like a puzzle piece sliding into place. It felt natural to you that their relationship would progress like that. The way they looked at each other, the way they touched each other, was evidence of a deeply intimate connection. If the image your mind conjured of them kissing lit a spark in your chest, you hid it even from yourself.
âThank you for telling me. If it makes you happy, then I am happy too. All I want for you is to be happy and know how loved you are. Come here.â You pulled them closer and placed lingering kisses on their foreheads. âI will always support you. Always.â You took a decision then. You couldnât put it off any longer. âI have something to tell you too. Jimin already knows but Jungkook, I would like for you to know too. I donât know how to say this exactly and Iâm sorry weâve kept this from you but I, Namjoon and Jin have been romantically involved. All of us. We have been kissing too.â
âOh.â Jungkook paused. âThat makes sense.â You couldnât help but laugh at that, Jimin joining you. âI mean youâre very close and it just makes sense. Weâre pack and I think that most packs are a little in love with each other, in one way or another,â he said. His cheeks felt hot against your shoulder.
In one way or another. He was right, it was such a special bond and you could imagine that for hybrids who felt the sense of pack deeper, the lines were easily blurred. A door opened in your mind but you closed it again forcefully.
Jimin fit his face in the crook of your neck. âI love you. I love you so much, all of you. Our pack. I donât know how I got so lucky to have you. I donât know if I deserve this.â His voice was wet.
âYou do,â you stated. âYou deserve everything and more. And we love you so much. So much.â
Jungkook squeezed his hand. âWe love you, Jiminie. Our pack wouldnât be complete without you. We need you to be whole. We need everyone.â
Their hands remained linked over your abdomen as you fell asleep.

When you finally pulled away, Jungkook leaned forward, trying to follow your lips. You were sat on his lap, his hands resting on your waist. You didnât say anything, just stared at one another, trying to breathe and grasp what just happened. Â After a couple of seconds, you break out into a large grin, moving forward and hiding your head in his chest.
Jungkook laughs at your reaction, wrapping his arms around your back and holding you close. He wears the biggest grin on his lips as he hears your laughter spilling from you. Your soul was warm, body filling with unrestrained happiness. It felt as though one hole in your heart had been filled, filled by the man you were laying with, laughing as if someone told a good joke. Â
This laughter was different though.
It was pure happiness.

Jimin yawned as he sat up from the awkward angle that he fell asleep in. It had been another night of working for him. In his drunken stupor, he had gotten rid of his jacket and fell asleep in his shirt and pants.
âHey, you.â Jimin said, sticking his head out the window to a maid that was cleaning the backyard.
âYoung master Jimin.â She immediately stood up straight and bowed.
âBring my breakfast to my room and an iced black coffee. Iâll be in the shower, leave it on my desk.â Jimin pulled his head back in and went to take a nice, hot shower. The smell of old alcohol and blood dissipated and was replaced with the smell of fresh soap.
âExactly what I needed.â Jimin came out, a towel over his shoulder to prevent his dripping hair from wetting his shirt. He saw the tray of hot food and sat down to dig in.
âChim? Youâre up?â Taehyung poked his head into the room.
âOh, Tae. Yeah... I just woke up. I didnât get in until this morning.â Jimin blinked as he took a sip of the hot soup. That settled his churning stomach.
âI heard. Namjoon hyung said to expect that we will be more busy but we still have to try to lay low.â Taehyung groaned in annoyance, falling onto the back of Jiminâs bed, arms spread as he stared at the ceiling.
âYour informant is dead, by the way.â
âWhat happened?â Taehyung hoisted himself up onto his elbows to look at the back of his best friendâs head.
âNot sure. I went to the meeting point like you said. His body was already cold, waiting for me to find. He was probably ratted out by someone. The injuries look like a mafiaâs execution style. His jaw was broken from someone stomping on the back of his head and a single gunshot wound right through the skull.â Jimin described.
âDamn, itâs getting harder to find good informants nowadays. Ones that actually stay hidden and anonymous. No biggie, Iâll just try to scout another person.â Taehyung clicked his tongue in annoyance.
âThatâs what you get for having lackeys as your informants. Do they even get you anything useful?â
âThey get me what I need underground, I guess. Plus, lackeys are easier to convert than long time workers.â Taehyung shrugged.
âOh yeah. Apparently, there was a visitor to one of my clubs. They canât describe the guy but someone handed my bartender this in the stack of bills during payment.â Jimin went to retrieve something from his jacket pocket.
âHmmm.â Taehyung held the card.
âWhat does it mean?â Jimin asked as he sat back down to continue his meal. There was no reply, making him turn to his best friend. Taehyung was deep in thought, a slight frown on his face.
âTae?â
âThis card... Itâs the Judgement card. The angel, sent by God, to judge who is eligible to enter heaven. Someone is going to declare a war soon and judgement will be upon us all, to decide who lives and who dies.â Taehyung spoke stoicly as he stood up.
âIf Namjoon hyung asks, donât tell him about the card yet. Until I can find out more.â He said to Jimin, who nodded his head.
âThis message was meant for me. I donât know why but to send a message in the form of a card...â Taehyung trailed off at the end of his sentence. Without another word, he left the room.
âIâm done with my food. You can clear my room now.â Jimin informed the butler when he emerged from his room.
âYes, young master.â The butler bowed.
âDo you guys know where Namjoon hyung is?â Jimin asked Jungkook and Hoseok, who were engrossed on their video game, too busy trying to kill the other personâs character.
âHeâs at the lab. Has some big meeting with the guys in the defense department of the government to work on some prototype or something.â Jungkook said.
âOh.â
âHe hasnât been to the lab in forever things are all backed up there. Theyâre asking Namjoon hyung to consuilt and invest in their new chemical weapon testing.â He explained.
âHe had a message for you. He said âgive the note to Yoongi hyungâ, whatever that means.â Hoseok added. Jimin hummed as an acknowledgement and went to find the second oldest. Yoongi was squinting at his piano book, trying to read the sheet music to play on his piano. He reached over to grab his crystal whiskey glass to take a sip.
âYoongi hyung? Itâs Jimin, I have something for you.â Jimin knocked on the door. Yoongiâs fingers stopped, resting on the black and white keys. He knew why Jimin was here, Namjoon had informed him prior.
âCome in.â He replied.
âHere. Namjoon hyung said to hand this to you.â Jimin took the folded paper out of his pocket and placed it on the piano.
âThanks.â Yoongi took the paper and unfolded it, his eyes scanning the contents. Jimin tilted his head, he didnât know what the names and numbers on the paper meant.
âWhatâs it for?â
âItâs a hit list. Weâre not sure whose hit list it is but since the names are members of the same political faction, itâs obvious that there is some sort of political motive to get rid of them.â Yoongi explained.
âSo what are we going to do?â Jimin asked.
âProtect the bigger names, kill the smaller ones before the actual hitman can get to them. Create confusion for the actual person that ordered the hit. You, Jungkook and I will be mobilised when the plan is in action.â Yoongi informed and Jimin nodded his head, understanding.
The three of them were the hitmen of the group. Of course, everyone knew how to wield a weapon but the three of them were usually responsible for the more violent missions.
âI wonât disturb you further. Bye.â Jimin waved and left. Yoongi watched the younger leave and shut the door.
âI got the list from Jimin. Itâs a big one. - Yoongiâ
Namjoon looked at the text on his phone. He let out a sigh of relief, grateful for Jiminâs skills in retrieving the list. He put the device away and turned back to the defence minister.
âOf course, I trust that all this will be kept under wraps?â The minister turned to Namjoon.
âYouâre the one that sought us out to invest in your little project, Mr Park. I should be the one concerned with the secrecy, not you. Donât you think?â Namjoon chuckled. At the slight taunt in his voice, the defence ministerâs guards stepped up but the old man held his hand up to stop him. He nodded in agreement with Namjoon.
âDefinitely. Your investment and expertise will be a big help to the development and testing of our new prototype. The outsourced labs weâve partnered with just isnât cutting it.â The minister clicked his tongue.
âI wouldnât be so quick to put them down. They do have the backing of the government and they know how to keep a good image in front of the public.â
âThatâs true. But I know you will get me the results I want, Mr Kim.â The minister gave Namjoon a knowing smile.
âI look forward to working with you then.â He held his hand out.
âNot so fast.â Namjoon raised his eyebrow at the outstretched hand. The minister withdrew his hand, waiting for Namjoon to continue speaking. No way will Namjoon strike a deal that easily.
âI want the profiles of those working the team and prototype. Background checks. Canât be too careless with potential moles working with other people.â Namjoon explained.
âUnderstandable. I will get my secretary to send them over to you.â
âYouâll get your contract signature after those profiles are looked over.â Namjoon said. The same guard from before stepped up.
âSomeoneâs a little on edge, isnât heâ Namjoon smirked with a slight tilt of the head.
âForgive him, Mr Kim. Heâs new to the job and doesnât know how these things work. Thereâs no intention to disrespect.â The defence minister said. He turned to the guard, nodding over to Namjoon. That was the signal for him to bow and apologise to Namjoon.
âIf thatâs all, I look forward to the next time we speak. Maybe then, youâll be a bit more accustomed to this.â Namjoon patted the guardâs shoulder, who stiffened up.
âThank you for your time in seeing us. Hopefully, we get a good partnership out of this.â The defence minister shook hands with Namjoon.
âWeâll see.â Namjoon raised his eyebrows.
The car came to a stop and the worker jogged out, opening the car door for Taehyung. He sighed and came out, entering the shop. The receptionist stood up from her post and bowed deeply to him.
âBoss.â Two of Taehyungâs men stood up and bowed as Taehyung walked deeper into the store.
âWe lost another informant yesterday. So either theyâre not very good secret keepers or there is a mole amongst us, leaking out information on who the informants are.â Taehyung said, sitting down on his throne-like chair. All this was covered by the curtain separating the store front and the usual âconsultationâ area of the shop.
âI want you all to find the mole. Go!â Taehyung barked. The two men nodded fearfully, bowing and running out of there.
âTch.â Taehyung kicked his feet up onto the table, resting them on the purple velvet tablecloth. He took out the card that Jimin gave him earlier, spinning it between his fingers.
âJudgement day is coming.â He said quietly to himself.
RINGGGGGGG
âVâs Fortune Telling and Tarot Reading. How can I help you?... Do you have an appointment?... I understand, please hold.â Taehyung heard the receptionist answer the phone at the front of the shop. The receptionist poked her head behind to curtain, making Taehyung sit up.
âBoss. Itâs for you.â She handed the phone over to Taehyung. It must have been a notable person for her to not handle the call herself like she usually does. He looked at the number and recognised it immediately.
âMr President. I wasnât expecting a call from you. How can I help?â Taehyung smirked as he spoke into the phone.
After passing the phone over, the receptionist immediately bowed out of the curtained area and walked to the front, turning the âopenâ sign to âclosedâ and drawing the privacy curtains.
âHi, (y/n)! Iâm apparently the only one with your number so I was asked to send you a message. Would you like to join my brothers and I for dinner tomorrow night? - Taehyungâ
You drummed your fingers on your desk as you thought about what to reply, how were you supposed to craft your reply and you didnât know if you wanted to say that you would go or not. Of course, your schedule was free, your plan was to just do university work. But did you want to go?
âHey. You okay?â Wonwoo waved his hand in front of your face when he noticed you spacing out.
âDid you just run a marathon? Youâre panting so heavily.â You chuckled, acting completely normal as you turned your phone screen to hide the message pop up from Taehyung.
âThe dance teacher let us go late. I thought I wouldnât have time to shower before coming.â He shook his head with a tired sigh.
âBecause your performance evaluations are coming up?â
âYeah. But Iâm confident my team and I can do it. Theyâre all really talented and hardworking.â Wonwoo said.
âIâm sure youâre just as talented as they are, Woo. I havenât seen you all perform before but I am sure you are all very good.â You smiled. You have seen Wonwoo rap, dance and play instruments before, he was really talented.
âActually, tomorrow weâre having this small performance in the studio and students are welcomed to come watch. Sort of like rehearsal for us too. Itâll be after school at about 4pm. Are you free to come?â He asked. You thought back to the dinner plans that Taehyung just invited you for. Maybe you could go after watching Wonwoo.
âSure. Save me a seat.â You nodded your head. Wonwoo smiled excitedly and gave you a thumbs up. The professor came in and began the class.
After class, you made sure to remember to text Taehyung back with your reply for tomorrowâs dinner plans. The plan was for you to be picked up from the university then get ready at their place before going for dinner.
âWhere will we be going for dinner? - (y/n)â
âItâs a surprise so I canât tell you. If you need the dress code, hmm⊠I would say dress smart casual. It isnât too fancy. - Taehyungâ
âThat doesnât help at all.â You sighed. Not because of the vague dress code but you wanted to do some research before the dinner. You wanted to know what to expect, in terms of behaviour and type of food.
âDonât worry too much. Itâs just a casual dinner :) See you tomorrow! - Taehyungâ
It was as if he knew exactly what you were fretting about. You were supposed to go home with Wonwoo but when you arrived at the front of the university, there were girls surrounding him, giggling and chatting about how excited they were to see him perform tomorrow.
âThe bus it is.â You didnât hold it against him. Even in high school, Wonwoo was very popular with the girls. There was no doubt that he was handsome and girls were always jealous of you being friends with him.
âHey, (y/n). Iâm at the front of the university. Where are you?â
âOh, hey Wonwoo! I saw that you were busy so I decided to just take the bus home. I didnât want to take you away from your friends.â You said as you tapped your card.
âIâm sorry, (y/n)... I promised to drop you home but those people just surrounded me. Where are you now?â
âNo need to apologise, itâs fine. Really. Iâm already on the way home.â You assured him.
âAlright. Iâll see you tomorrow.â
You and Wonwoo bid each other goodbye before hanging up. While on the bus, you decided to look at the promotional announcements for your nearby supermarket. With everything youâve been doing, the house was in serious need of some restocking. So instead of going home, you got off at the stop near the supermarket.
âGood evening.â You grabbed a cart and greeted the staff that were out restocking. You followed your list in picking up what you needed, both food and household items.
âPasta.â You looked at all the shapes available on the shelf. Going to the shelf, you tiptoed to try and get the box down.
âLet me help.â Someone appeared behind you, reaching up to get the box.
âThank you.â You received the box with a bow of your head. After he saved you the other night, you havenât really spoken to him. You didnât really know how he felt about you. Plus, you were a little awkward.
âWhat brings you here, Hoseok sshi?â You blinked.
âI was in the area for work. Stopped by to get our youngest some snacks.â He explained, gesturing to his basket of snacks.
âAnd (y/n)? Just call me Hoseok.â He smiled. You nodded your head, clearing your throat while looking away. You continued walking and Hoseok walked beside you.
âDo you mind me tagging along?â He asked. You shook your head.
âDo you usually end university at this time?â He tilted his head.
"No, it differs depending on the class and meetings after.â You replied. Hoseok grabbed what he needed and waited patiently for you, helping you carry the heavy stuff to load into your shopping cart. He didnât really make an effort to force a conversation, which you were grateful for.
âIâm done.â You informed him. He nodded and you both headed for the cash register to pay for your items. Like the gentleman he was, Hoseok let you go first, even if you had more things.
âHere-â
âNo. Please, these are my household stuff. I can pay for them myself.â You stopped him from giving his credit card over.
âHere you go. Thank you.â You handed your own card over to the cashier, who bagged everything up for you. As she bagged, you put the stuff bag into your cart to wheel out. Hoseok helped you while the cashier scanned his items.
âIâll drop you home. Itâll be too heavy to carry everything and take the bus.â Hoseok offered.
âThank you.â You shot him a small smile.
âDone. Letâs go.â Hoseok got his bags and you pushed the cart, following him to his car. Fortunately, Hoseok decided to drive a bigger car to work rather than one of the two seater sportscars.
Once everything was loaded, Hoseok began to drive back to your home. Unlike Taehyung, he listened to soft rap music in the car. You looked out the window at the setting sun and noticed people rushing after getting off work. Luckily Hoseok had bumped into you and was able to send you back. Or else you would have to carry everything in a crowded bus.
âLet me help you off load the items.â Hoseok said as he put the car in park outside your house.
âThereâs no need! Youâve helped me more than enough. Even saving me from having to ride in a crowded bus with my things. Really, I appreciate it.â You shook your hands.
âItâs alright. Jungkook can afford to wait for his snacks. He wonât starve.â Hoseok laughed, grabbing the bags and walking up to your house. You quickly ran forward to unlock the door for him.
âYou can just leave them here.â You pointed to the kitchen table.
âThank you again, Hoseok sshi.â You bowed repeatedly once everything was brought into the house.
âDonât keep thanking me, (y/n). Itâs really no big deal. Also, I said to just call me Hoseok. Drop the formalities.â He smiled. His smile was rather infectious, making you smile too.
âIâm glad youâre not feeling awkward or uncomfortable with me after what happened last time. Because I want to assure you that I wonât judge or anything. It was a moment of vulnerability for you and I would never tease you over it.â Hoseok said.
âO-Oh... right... I was just feeling embarrassed by my reaction to it.â You rubbed the back of your neck.
âNothing to be embarrassed about. Itâs normal to be scared. And Iâm glad you could count on us, or at least Taehyung, to help you.â He said.
âIt was the only person I could think of at that time. And I donât even want to think of what would have happened if you guys didnât come in time.â You shivered, wrapping your arms around yourself.
âDonât scare yourself.â He patted your shoulder and you nodded, relaxing immediately.
âIâll see you tomorrow at dinner?â
âYes. I look forward to it.â You giggled. You walked Hoseok to the door, awkwardly waving and watching him drive off before heading back into the house to unpack the groceries.

âI shouldnât turn up early when you guys are not ready, right?â You asked with a giggle as you walked beside Wonwoo.
âDonât worry, if weâre not ready at this point, I donât think weâll ever be ready. Besides, I want to introduce you to my team.â Wonwoo smiled. You nodded with a hum. As you stood outside the studio, you heard music and chatter coming from the inside.
âHey guys. Iâm here.â Wonwoo knocked before entering. He held the door open for you to go in. There were so many people in Wonwooâs team, 13 of them in total.
âEveryone, this is my best friend, (y/n). (y/n), this is my team.â Wonwoo smiled brightly as he introduced you, his hands resting on your shoulders.
âNice to meet you all.â You bowed shyly.
âAny friend of Wonwooâs is a friend of ours. Please, make yourself comfortable.â The boys all introduced themselves to you. It was a lot of names to take in at once but they were patient and kind.
âBetter start warming up, Wonwoo.â One of them reminded. You waved Wonwoo off and took a seat at the corner.
âJihoon hyung, is this the new track?â Chan held up a CD.
âIt should be.â The shorter male nodded his head. You tilted your head as you looked at him. His complexion and features reminded you of Yoongi, you wouldnât be surprised if they were related in some way.
âYes?â Jihoon turned to you, having noticed you staring at him. Your eyes widened before you shook your head.
âSorry, I didnât mean to stare. You just look like someone I know.â You explained. He chuckled and nodded his head, turning back to talk to another team member. You watched as Wonwoo warmed up, completely focused on what Mingyu was saying to him. At least you werenât distracting him with your presence there.
This wasnât an ordinary evaluation. Wonwoo had described it has having to plan a concert on their own, which not only tested their talents but also their stage management skills and teamwork ability.
âWhich ever team is ready can warm up first.â Seungcheol announced to the others.
âIs there something I can help with? I can like play the music or something.â You volunteered, seeing the boys run back and forth to the music system.
âNo need. Youâre our audience!â Joshua smiled.
âI know how busy you guys are warming up and rehearsing. I donât mind helping, I can still be the audience from where I am seated anyway. This way, you guys donât have to take turns.â You giggled.
âOkay then. Thank you!â He patted your shoulder.
âDonât worry about it.â You replied in English, guessing he could speak the language since he had an English name. Joshuaâs eyes widened.
âYou speak English?â He asked. You nodded your head, rubbing the back of your neck shyly.
âThatâs cool. You speak well!â Joshua laughed. He explained that only him and Vernon could speak English in the team. And you told him how your mother wanted you to be a polyglot, thinking that it would help you in your future career.
Wonwoo watched you laugh and chat with Joshua in English. He hadnât seen you open up so easily to a stranger you have just met before and it made him feel weird.
â(y/n).â Wonwoo called. His team was done warming up and were going to run their rehearsal first.
âI better get to my job.â You turned back to go to the music system.
âOf course. So this is play and pause, this is to go back to the start and this is to skip to the next song. Easy.â Joshua told you how to work the system and it was relatively simple. You nodded your head and sat down.
âGo.â Wonwoo gave you a thumbs up and you played the music. You watched Wonwoo and his team rap. They were all very charismatic and powerful with their raps.
âPause. Sorry, I missed the beat. Can we start again?â Vernon said. You stopped the music and scrolled back to the start to play again.
âThanks, (y/n).â Vernon said into the mic. You gave him two thumbs up and a smile. While they rehearsed diligently, the others made sure to keep their voices down to avoid distracting those that were practicing. You took your phone out to order some drinks from the school cafe to be delivered to the studio for Wonwoo and his friends.
*KNOCK KNOCK*
âOh. Hang on.â You stood up and went to the door. Wonwoo momentarily looked away, eyes following your figure. Were you already leaving before the performance even started?
âSorry about that.â You jogged back and stopped the music as the next song was going to play.
âIâm not sure what everyone likes so I bought iced americanos for everyone. Please help yourselves.â You told everyone with a bow as you carried in the coffee carriers. Wonwoo went over to help you take them.
âNo worries!â
âYou didnât need to but thank you, (y/n)!â The boys all chorused as they handed out the coffees to one another.
âThis is yours. Your regular order.â You took a specific cup out and handed it to Wonwoo. Of course you would know what his regular order was. He received the cup, taking a sip.
âThank you, (y/n).â Wonwoo smiled softly, patting your head.
After that little coffee break, you helped the others run their unit routines. You made sure to clap for each of them. They were all so talented in their own way. Wonwoo sat beside you as he took his break, waiting for them to finish so they could all do the main performance together.
âDo you want to take a break?â Wonwoo asked, nudging your shoulder playfully. You shook your head.
âIâm good. Itâs just pushing a button.â You laughed. Wonwoo was soon called and all 13 of them prepared to do their performance as a team. You were in awe, it was so mesmerising to see them all come together.
âLetâs do it sharper and cleaner.â Soonyoung said as they all panted at the end.
âOkay. Take a sip of water and weâll run it one last time.â Seungcheol said to everyone. You scrolled the song back for them to rehearse again.
âThank you for your help, (y/n). See you!â The boys all waved to you as you parted ways with them. They were going backstage while you were heading to where the audience sits.
âGood luck.â You wished them.
âYouâve been a great help. Thanks again.â Wonwoo smiled, placing a hand on your head as he looked at you.
âNo need to thank, Wonwoo. Your friends are all really nice. All the best for your performances, I know you can do it. Donât doubt yourself and your talent.â You encouraged him. Wonwoo laughed, nodding his head.
âIâll see you in the audience?â He tilted his head. You gave him a thumbs up and walked away from him. Wonwoo had saved you a seat in the front row of the small auditorium. Down the row, you could see the professors and instructors there, ready to grade and evaluate all 13 boys. You hoped they could see how hard all of them worked on this.
âAlright, everyone. Iâm sure you know that these performances will be evaluated so letâs not draw attention away from the performers.â One of the professors spoke to the audience.
âBegin!â One said into the mic and the lights dimmed.
âGo, Wonwoo!â You cheered along with the rest of the audience that was there, awaiting the boys to come out.
The performance began, it wasnât a long show. There were two entire group performances, unit performances and some members played extra instruments. Like Wonwoo playing the guitar while Jihoon played the piano.
âThank you all for making it tonight. Weâre really grateful and hope you enjoyed the performance.â The 13 of them stood in a line and bowed.
âThank you!â The boys all waved. Wonwoo looked down and saw your retreating back heading for the auditorium exit. He ran backstage to get his bag to try and catch you.
â(y/n)!â He was going to ask if you wanted to have dinner together to celebrate a successful performance. But you didnât seem to hear him as you walked to the exit of the university. He jogged after you, smiling to those that congratulated him on a good show.
âWow, look at him!â
âWho is he?â
Wonwoo saw you rush towards a buff guy, leaning against his Lamborghini. His sleeves were folded up, revealing the tattoo sleeve he had on one arm.
âSorry for the wait.â You bowed your head as you approached. The guy shook his head, opening the door for you to enter the passenger seat. After that, he went to the driverâs seat and sped off, leaving the students to gossip.
âThe show just ended. Did you wait long...? Uh...â You didnât know his name.
âJungkook. And no, I didnât wait long. Itâs alright, I was earlier than the time Taehyung hyung told me to come anyway.â He spoke without much emotion.
âSorry I had to rush off for a dinner appointment, Woo! But congratulations on having a great performance, you were amazing! Letâs have a meal soon to celebrate! On me. - (y/n)â
*read*
You assumed that Wonwoo was probably busy, which is why he didnât reply despite having read your message. The show was good and you had no doubt that Wonwoo would receive a good grade. But at the same time, you could be biased. You tucked your phone away, looking out at the view as Jungkook sped through the streets and cars.
âWeâre here.â Jungkook said as he parked the car in the basement. You came out, slinging your bag over your shoulder.
âThanks for coming to get me.â You bowed your head. He hummed, walking in front of you. You followed him into the house, vaguely remembering the way to the guest bedroom you used.
âAgashi, the bathroom has been restocked for your use.â The butler informed.
âThank you. Iâm glad I still remember how to get there. This place is like a maze.â You chuckled. The butler nodded with a laugh.
âIâll leave you to it then. If you need anything, just let us know.â He bowed deeply before exiting the room. You took out the outfit you planned and hung it up, not wanting it to crease any further.
âIâve got an hour to get ready.â You checked your phone before hopping into the bathroom.
âCalm down.â You told yourself with your hand over your racing heart, knowing that your time was running out. After a nice shower, you played some music as you dried your hair, trying to style it with the hairdryer that was in the bathroom, and did some light makeup.
The outfit you chose was a black turtle neck with a plaid skirt and a dark brown blazer draped over your shoulders. For shoes, you went with black suede chelsea boots that had a small heel.
âYouâre here.â As you were exiting the room, you bumped into Yoongi. He nodded, adjusting the collar of his shirt.
âYes.â You bowed your head.
âCome on. We can wait for the others in the living room.â He nodded his head over to the stairwell. You slung your bag over your shoulder and followed him down to the living room area.
âWant a drink?â Yoongi offered, going to the bar area as you settled on the couch. You watched him pour some whiskey into a crystal glass.
âNo, thanks.â You declined. He sat in the arm chair, quietly sipping his drink. You couldnât help but think back to Jihoon earlier and how he looked so much like Yoongi.
âSomething on my face?â Yoongi teased.
âDo you ever think you have a long lost brother out there?â You blurted out. Yoongi blinked, taken aback by your sudden question.
âWell, I never thought about that considering I can barely remember what my parents look like. That is really a question to think about. Do you think you have any long lost siblings out there?â Yoongi asked back. He obviously thought your question was more rhetorical and reflective rather than a direct one that had âyesâ or ânoâ to answer.
âSorry. I just... I just met someone that looked like you, thatâs all. So I just blurted it out.â You rubbed the back of your neck in embarrassment. Yoongi burst out laughing.
âYouâre peculiar.â He snorted.
âI didnât mean it as a joke.â You face palmed. One by one, the other 6 streamed into the living room. They were all very handsome and well dressed.
âYou look great.â Taehyung smiled, as if he heard your internal worry of being underdressed compared to them.
âThank you. All of you too.â You used your hand to gesture to all of them. Namjoon stood next to you, holding his arm out to you. You blinked for a few minutes before you registered what his intentions were.
âThank you.â You said meekly with a bow of your head as he walked you to the front. There were 3 big vans waiting with drivers.
âUh...â You werenât sure which van to go in as the boys naturally split into their usual seating arrangement. Seeing that Jimin and Jungkook went into the last van, you decided to go to one of the ones in front. You had a feeling the two didnât like you very much.
âAre you just gonna stand there?â Yoongi tilted his head.
âYah, Yoongi ah. Donât speak like that. Come, (y/n), ride with us.â Jin smiled as he held his hand out to you.
âO-Okay.â You slipped your hand into his and stepped into the van. Yoongi wasnât going to move to the back so you just squeezed between their two single seats to the third row.
âAre you nervous?â Jin suddenly turned around to face you.
âN-No?â
âIs that a question?â Yoongi voiced out, not looking up from his phone screen. At this point, you knew his was teasing and flattened.
âStop being a bully. Sheâs already a wreck.â Jin slapped his arm. Being the oldest meant that Jin could do anything to Yoongi and Yoongi would think twice before retaliating.
âIf youâre worried about Jimin, donât worry about him. At most, you guys can just avoid one another for now and wait for another time to talk things out. Plus, the rest of us are there, he wonât do much.â Jin assured with a kind smile.
âBut heâs right though. Everything heâs said, I agree with. Itâs a hard pill to swallow but the truth, nonetheless.â You forced a smile.
âDoesnât mean itâs the truth means he gets an excuse for acting the way he is now and the way he did before. A lot of people can tell the truth without the screaming, yelling and guilt tripping.â Yoongi spoke and Jin actually nodded his head in agreement. You chewed on your bottom lip as you fell back onto the seat to look out the window.
âSir.â The van came to a stop and someone opened the van door. It was one of the doormen of the place you were going to for dinner. Jin and Yoongi came down. They held their hands out to you to help you down.
âMy apologies for not noticing you, maâam.â The doorman bowed deeply.
âItâs alright. Thank you.â You turned to Yoongi and Jin, pulling your hands away from theirs.
âI thought you said it wasnât going to be a fancy place?â You asked Taehyung who came to walk beside you. The building sure looked fancy.
âIt isnât. Serious.â Taehyung held his hands up.
âIt sure does look fancy...â You mumbled. You followed them in quietly, kind of walking between them so you wouldnât feel like all the attention was on you. The 7 seemed used to it as people stared and whispered about them.
âMr Kim. Right this way.â The hostess smiled and bowed to Namjoon. She was posh and pretty, even her posture as she walked was something admirable in those high heels.
âPlease let us know if you need anything.â She said as she closed the doors to the private room, sealing you all in, away from the rest of the restaurant patrons. Hoseok handed you a menu and you flipped through it. Some of the items, you recognised because of the research you did prior.
âAre you alright, (y/n)?â Namjoon asked.
âHuh? Yes, I am.â You nodded. You were so focused on the menu that you hadnât noticed the serious look on your face.
âWe usually come for their dinner menu. The chef decides what to recommend, DĂ©gustation in other words.â  Jin helped you, flipping the menu to the back to show you.
âOkay. Iâll have that.â You decided. Most of the courses were fixed but for the appetiser, meat and the dessert, there were options to choose from.
âDo you have any food allergies?â Taehyung asked. You shook your head.
When the manager was called in, you listened and watched the 7 of them place their orders, all of them having their own combination of food based on their own preferences. Then it came to you.
âFor the appetiser, Iâll have the dashi-poached crabmeat angel hair pasta. And for my meat, the 20-day dry aged hanwoo sirloin.â You ordered, learning from the boysâ order that dessert was ordered later after the rest of the meal.
âOf course, miss.â The manager bowed. Yoongi and Namjoon decided on a bottle of wine to order and share.
âYou know your food.â Hoseok noted, impressed with you knowing what to order.
âNo... I was really just guessing based on what sounded and looked good. I hope I ordered the right thingsâ You lied, not wanting to reveal that you research common expensive foods prior to this.
âYou chose good options.â Yoongi replied, assuring you. You let out a small sigh of relief. There wasnât much conversation going on at the table as you waited for your food. They talked in smaller groups, like Jimin and Jungkook, who were seated opposite each other at the end of the table. You were at the other end, opposite Namjoon with Jin on your left.
âDid you pick a major yet?â Yoongi asked.
âNo... I havenât really thought about it actually. Every time I try to narrow down my options, it just ends up being more confusing for me.â You rubbed the back of your neck.
âYour father mentioned that youâre a polyglot. Why donât you go into linguistics?â Namjoon pointed out.
âThat is probably one of my top options. But I was wondering what I can do with a linguistics degree... Career wise.â You sighed.
âThe demands of the industry is always changing. And in my opinion, a linguistics degree is less narrowed than a specific science degree, for example.â He shrugged. You nodded your head, he did make sense.
âAnd in our company, we do deal with foreign partners so having someone like you on hand would be useful.â Hoseok added on. Maybe now, there was a purpose for you to pick a major.
âBut of course, that shouldnât be your reason to pick the major.â Taehyung said, as if he knew what you were thinking.
