When pressed up (down)

They sing sweetly

I am little (tall)

I am small (grown)

I live cast in light

(shadows grow beneath me)

Everything is insignificant (does that mean I am too)

Who is looking down (do I want to know)

Are they watching us, glad (disappointed)

Do they love us (or is it indifference, now)

Do we deserve it (can I earn it)

Look, they say

What do you see?

(A great expanse of nothing)

Listen, they say

What do you hear

(The drumbeat echo of my heart in a void, peddling silence)

Isn’t it beautiful, they say

In the way of sun-warmed faces and optimistic smiles
