Ah yes, Freddie. Though he's a little annoying in the beginning, he's redeemable. He's a huge geek, though he'd never admit it. A prime example is his love for all things hero comics. He has projects on them and just about every available issue under the sun. They actually feature in a short story I've posted here! But he really is as smart as he thinks he is. He's been pushed ahead 3 grades and is at a school for gifted kids. However, this doesn't make him above everyone as he thinks it does, which is a fatal flaw of his

While he's not technically an antagonist in my main story, he definitely hinders the trio significantly with some extremely selfish actions. Though I haven't finished writing it by a long shot, his stubbornness will annoy his "teammates" a lot, though the banter will be cute.

And the alternate universes!! (is it even a post about my characters if they're not hinted at?) In many many crossover AUs he has parentalish figures, in the form of Aster and Violetta. They really help him grow as a person, and to see perspectives beyond his own. Also! His awesome and fun aunt, Dawn who are very soft for each other, but they'd both rather die than admit it.

Zach: Before her character arc, he struggles to be nice around her. Her attitude reminds him of every kid that bullied him in elementary school - aloof and hateful. The only redeemable thing about her is her family situation. Since she was raised by her uncle, she doesn't know much better, which gives him a little hope for her future if she spends more time around kinder people. Unfortunately, he probably won't be those people, at least in the beginning; eventually, they might bond, but she has to become a more empathetic person first.

Bella: Like Zach, before her character arc, Dawn is on thin ice with Bella. She'll treat Dawn coolly and won't be outright rude, but it'll take a lot for Dawn to redeem herself. However, her social skills are impressive to Bella, who has to work painfully hard to stay afloat in high school politics. Though in saying that, she's often confused by Dawn's chameleon-esque personality when seeing her interact with different people.

Freddie: Dawn is his favorite person in the entire group. She has good taste, understands that some people are just inferior. However, she is a little cold, and he's intimidated by her age and temperament - he'd like to befriend an ally, but she also has social experience he doesn't. But any fear he has in regards to her comes from a place of respect, which is more than can be said of anyone else of either group.

day seven: dawn

last, but certainly not least, is dawn! although she keeps herself apart from the main group, she is connected to them through nyx, her cousin. dawn is the daughter of aunt jetta, but is closer to her uncle, nero, who treated her as his heir- until nyx showed up. then, dawn felt like an afterthought in her own family, as everyone’s attention seemed focused on nyx. the Institute of Briarwood gives her a chance to prove herself, and she’s determined to take it.

morning routines

nyx and juni wake up relatively early every day (usually, nyx wakes up first and just cuddles with juni for a bit to wake her up,, couple goals) and they make a Healthy breakfast together. nyx is pretty hopeless at cooking in the beginning, but juni is a very good teacher

lynn also wakes up early, but she does not love social interaction first thing in the morning, so she usually just reads while eating a piece of toast or something simple

violetta would wake up slightly early, but it’s still too late for her to eat breakfast since she spends a lot of time finding a cute outfit and putting on makeup. so usually, she just makes herself an iced coffee that she drinks during her first class (“all part of a complete breakfast!”)

aster goes to sleep very late and would like to sleep in. unfortunately, she is a light sleeper and shares a room with dawn (who wakes up early). as a result, aster is forced awake pretty early as well. she eats a simple breakfast (she doesn’t like to skip meals as a general rule) and makes herself a hot coffee which she drinks during school

violetta and aster would argue with each other about the merits of iced coffee versus hot coffee. every morning. it becomes a tradition, and the argument eventually becomes very flirtatious

tora wakes up Just before school and rushes to get dressed and look somewhat presentable. if she doesn’t have any time to spare, she’ll just grab a single heavily caffeinated energy drink (tora’s not allowed to have more than one after the Incident that ended up with her staying up for a solid four days and sleeping for five). if she does have time, tora makes herself a cup of tea (her brother taught her how to make tea and she always thinks about him while making it) and eats some type of dessert or chips

dawn wakes up very early and has a very sophisticated breakfast of toast and jam. she makes herself a cup of coffee (using her expensive coffee maker, of course), and she makes patterns in the foam. yes, dawn is extra and, yes, she’s upset that she doesn’t have a chef to make her breakfast anymore, but she will persevere somehow

family au: in this chaotic au, half of our cast of characters have graduated college while the other half are toddlers! when the adorable kids are fostered by the adults, guess what ensues? pure fluff! (well. nothing I write is Completely sans of Angst, so expect a tiny bit of that, but mostly pure fluff!)

royal au: a world of romance and betrayal comes to life in the court of two neighboring kingdoms. there are princesses, witches, knights in shining armor, and a rebellion brewing beneath it all. what will become of our beloved characters?

survival au: mystery and danger collide as our characters are forced into an arena and told to fight by someone unknown. together, they escape, but they find themselves lost in a freezing forest. will they make it home, or will they die trying?

fusion au: elements of our separate novels combine as our characters go through their lives with either elemental powers or the rarer vigilante powers. although they are just in high school, our characters battle angst and tragedy, while making some new friendships and new love as well!

game show au: in this reality tv show, our characters battle it out for the chance to take home the final prize! but money isn’t the only motivation driving some of them forward, which leads to alliances and friendships and romances- but also heartbreaks and betrayals. who will win in the end?

hogwarts au: the aesthetic of a world of magic is a fascinating one, although I would like to personally fight J.K. Rowling, so putting our characters into hogwarts was simple. they all come from different backgrounds and different houses, but the found family is as strong as ever.

the perfect family (tpf) au: violetta and aster adopt freddie, becoming a loving family once and for all. is there fluff? of course! is there angst? well, duh! is there found family? yes! is there a beautifully domestic sapphic relationship? YES! what more could anyone need? this alternative universe feels like the definition of hurt/comfort to me, and I love it.

these following aus only involve my cof(fee) characters! <3

pirate au: set in the thrilling world of pirates, a princess is torn from the cushy life she’s always known, and she finds herself becoming fond of the beautifully rugged pirate captain. meanwhile, a former pirate captain is betrayed by someone close, and now she’ll stop at nothing to take back her inheritance. there is adventure and mermaids on the horizon, but pirate hunters are hot on everyone’s trail, and one wrong step might be their last.

college au: what it says on the tin! my characters, but in a modern day college setting. when I write scenes out of the setting of my novel, this is the situation I usually place everyone in. there is sweet romance and many chaotic events take place as the year wears on.

board game night: clue edition

nyx and juni throw a game night monthly. it was juni’s idea, of course. they make dinner for everyone, and sometimes they watch movies after the board game! nyx is the one who picks clue because she Loves clue. they invite everyone, even dawn

this takes place in what I imagine is a modern day college au, as they wouldn’t know what clue was in canon. in this, nyx and juni have a little apartment together, and violetta and aster have been dating for a few months. for the purpose of this scenario, nyx and dawn have reached a peace, but aren’t extremely close (I did this because I wanted to include dawn, so don’t read into anything-)

tora is So Pumped although she’s never played the game or watched the movie; she just loves board game night despite rarely winning. 

lynn hasn’t seen the movie but clue was one of the few board games at her orphanage and she played it often, so she’s very good. 

dawn agrees with nyx on one thing and one thing only- clue is both the best movie and the best board game to ever exist. she doesn’t always show up to game night, but she’s determined to Beat nyx this time (and she also is there to have fun, but that’s lower on the list of priorities)

they start the game before dinner and the movie

only six people can play the game, so lynn suggests that one of the couples can team up. she doesn’t even finish her sentence before violetta and aster immediately stop holding hands, and they both say “not it!” at the same time

nyx and juni are obviously happy to be a team because it gives them more time together, but vi and aster are just too competitive. they love the playful rivalry that breaks out during games (“how can one of us win if we’re on the same team?” “exactly, aster!”) 

lynn has to explain the rules for close to fifteen minutes because nyx and dawn keep jumping in to elaborate about the game and to say random trivia. lynn is explaining Directly to tora since she’s the only one who’s never played, but she keeps getting distracted and zoning out

lynn: okay, tora, do you understand now?

tora, snapping back from thinking about how much chocolate she could eat in thirty seconds: understand what

and then they all have to pick what game pieces to be, which is an ordeal, of course,

miss scarlet: aster chooses this one because of the color and because miss scarlet is the only part of the movie she remembers (aster watched half of it when she was five and then got kicked out of the movie theatre)

mrs white: nyx and dawn almost Fight to the Death over this one. sorry to anyone who believes otherwise, but mrs white is the absolute best character, and nyx and dawn agree with me on this. the crisis is averted because juni suggests that she and nyx can be the yellow piece

mrs peacock: lynn likes the color blue (“female peacocks are actually called peahens, and they camouflage with nature so they are mostly brown- none of this bright blue color-”)

mr green: tora likes the color :D she also really didn’t want to be the colonel because of military associations (I haven’t discussed this part of her past yet) 

colonel mustard: juni and nyx take this piece (see above) 

professor plum: violetta’s never seen the movie and loves purple, so she chooses this guy (“can I name her lady lavender instead?” “no”)

once the game finally starts, they quickly find out who’s a good player and who is… terrible. 

tora is absolutely awful, but she is having a lot of fun! she’s horrible at hiding the truth, so everyone knows all of her cards almost immediately. she also forgot that she had to take notes in order to find out the details of the murder. tora eventually realizes that she hasn’t been playing the game right when dawn mentions something about how she has a superior way of organizing her notes. (“…organizing what?” *collective sigh*) oh well, she’s not going to win, but she absolutely loves the game. 

nyx and juni are sitting close to each other. nyx is taking notes while juni is in charge of the cards. they decide on their moves by whispering to each other. nyx has a very good system for taking notes, but she only shares the system with juni, who is almost drops the cards a few times because she’s excited during the entire game.

violetta and aster sit at opposite ends of the table, but they end up bantering so much that nyx and dawn put aside their differences to rearrange the seating so that the Rivals can sit next to each other. this results in cuddling as they play the game- but, make no mistake, they are still Locked in Combat. 

dawn is good at the game. she and nyx are just about evenly matched, since clue used to be the only game they could agree on, so they played often. she’s very proud of a new technique she’s using to take notes, and so dawn boasts about it for a bit. (not too much though; she knows that she’s on Slightly Shaky ground with the group because of her past, so she doesn’t want to push it) 

lynn is also a very good player. she takes diligent notes and watches both the board and people’s facial expressions like a hawk. 

aster and violetta became too distracted by flirting with each other, so they fall behind in the actual game. so it comes down to nyx/juni, dawn, or lynn.

nyx can see in her cousin’s eyes that she figured out the answer, but she and juni have their turn before dawn. they have the weapon and the room figured out and narrowed it down to two options for the person. nyx tells juni to pick randomly, so they go with mr green. mr green with the candlestick in the library is their final answer, and it is correct! 

nyx and juni triumphantly kiss and then hug each other

dawn comes very close to flipping the board

tora, confused: I was mr green, but I didn’t murder anyone, I swear! 

dawn, deadpans a quote from the movie: you didn’t do it

violetta and aster are somehow disappointed that neither of them won and at the same time relived. they just want to cuddle for the rest of the night. and, luckily for them, they can do that while watching the movie!

Her heart pounded like a drum in her chest, the rhythm like music to her ears as Juni lay wide awake in the hospital room. Darkness surrounded her, pressing in on all sides, almost suffocating in its completeness. The only light came from the ancient face of the pale moon as it streamed in through the parted curtains, battling against the dark shadows of the room in a losing battle. Unlike a few hours before, her heartbeat felt strong, the blood rushing through her veins normally once again. 

If Juni closed her eyes, she could almost imagine the room around her was her bedroom. That is, if it weren’t for the beeping of machines, and the tube in her arm, and the soft snoring of her dads from the chairs at the foot of the bed. She breathed in, trying to focus on something- anything- to block her mind from drifting to dark places full of fear and dread and-

April Prompts Day 7 - river

Featuring Bella and Nyx @pagesofcursive character

What are you doing?” The words were slow and cold. Bella jumped out of her skin, shoving the half-finished gadget into a pocket. It tinkled as it bumped against loose screws.

    Trying to cover her surprise, she asked, “I’m assuming you used your powers to sneak up on me.” Her brain teased her with just-out-of-reach knowledge; she knew this girl, knew she was somehow related to someone she was acquainted with, but her tired mind couldn’t quite make the connection. The only thing that clicked was that she had dark powers.

    “Yes, and no,” the reply still echoed from one of the far corners of the room. “You wouldn’t have been able to see me if you tried, but I didn’t try to conceal my footsteps - you were very involved with whatever it is you’re doing. Also, you didn’t answer my question. What. Are. You. Doing.”

    “I, uh, practicing my powers?” She cursed silently to herself. It was important to make these kinds of statements actually sound like statements. Allowing nervousness to turn defenses into questions allowed for weaknesses to be exploited, arguments to be deconstructed, and her entire facade could come crumbling down. She rubbed the bridge of her nose, unseen by the girl behind her. She needed sleep, her thoughts were turning to an unhealthy place faster than normal. Practicing with her ice during the day and pushing herself to her limits, creating new but simple inventions, at night took a toll on her.

    The girl drawled, “So the glint I saw from across the room was ice, then?”

    Bella swallowed the lump in her throat, trying to steady her voice. “Yes.”

    “Can I see?” Footsteps approached and Bella glanced up to see a flash of blonde in the faint strip of moonlight. Her eyes widened in realization. Nyx, her dormmate’s cousin.

    Hastily, Bella’s fingers twitched as she tried to summon so much as a flake. Frost covered her fingers, and the dew on the windowsill froze into delicate shapes. Her breath solidified into a mist as the temperature in the immediate vicinity of her plummeted. Biting her tongue, she tried to gain enough control to slow the unpredictable spread. Employing a psychological tactic she’d read about, she attempted to redirect her focus instead of simply taking it away from her nervousness. She took her bottle from between her legs and poured a bead of water into her hand. Concentrating, she formed it into a simple gear, finer than paper and almost as big as her palm. It wasn’t difficult, nor was it functional, but it was better than nothing. Footsteps stopped by her right side. Discreetly, Bella shifted the cup of washers and screws so it was concealed by her legs.

    “So let's see?”

    Her fluctuating emotions caused her to snap, “Why do you even care? What about my business concerns you?”

    “Touchy. You know, from my experience, people who are this defensive have something to hide.” Nyx crossed behind Bella. Noticing too late, Bella cringed inside as Nyx’s foot knocked the cup, letting out a stream of metal. “That doesn’t look like ice.”

    Rage and frustration simmered. “Maybe it’s not, but how would you know that I wasn’t using those for other things. You’ve seen my tracks? I need something to base it on. I was… studying them.”

    “That seems like a pretty poor imitation,” Nyx pointed out, tilting her head toward the gear that sat unmelted on Bella’s cold leg. “Have you got anything else you’re ‘studying’?” Nyx’s hands didn’t move from her sides. She strode over to a cupboard, and Bella scrambled up to shadow her. “You wouldn’t mind if I look in here, would you.”

    “Sure,” Bella ground her teeth together, “why not?”

    A disorganized river of miniature screws, linchpins, circuit boards, and old tech - phones, tablets, laptops, and everything in-between - streamed out. Bella flinched minutely.

    “You know this isn’t allowed?” Nyx was unreadable.

    Bella rolled her eyes, knowing her fate was set no matter what she said. “Obviously. Why do you think I lied? I was working on this.” She pulled out the gadget, its sides loose and wires sticking out.

    Nyx stood and walked over. She took it from Bella’s open palm, examining it. “You know,” she said, dropping it back into Bella’s waiting hand, “If you want to continue to do this, you’d have to get better at hiding your little… hobby. Do you know what would happen if someone found out about this?”

    Bella raised her eyebrows in response. Duh.

    “Here,” Nyx knelt on the ground and patted beside her. “I’ve done my share of dirty work. You’re going to need some pointers.”

As you can see, I seek only to cause chaos. To confuse and disrupt what is expected from these two couples

love?? you must be mistaken. these two are in a rivalry?? where did you get the idea of romance aha. anyway, to answer your question- 

violetta gets a very stubborn and competitive look on her face when someone (usually aster) challenges her. (aster almost gets this... warm feeling in her chest when she sees it? but it must be just because it’s. fun to be in a rivalry, right?) that look means that violetta is very determined about something, and that she’s willing to work hard (or even fight) to win.  

when violetta says something that draws a genuine laugh or smile out of aster, she gets very proud. (happy? no way. just feelings of pride here.) because, after all, that means that violetta is one of the only people able to get a real reaction from aster, and isn’t that a triumph in itself? (it has nothing to do with how violetta’s heart leaps at the way aster lets down her guard and trusts her with a moment of happiness.)

Oh that's so good! Dawn deserves some fluff. And some coffee

september prompt #1: coffee smell

genre: slice of life, friendship growth, fluff

The darkness of the hallway pressed in around Aster, her senses sluggish but the feeling of urgency still drumming through her veins, her pulse racing as she stumbled through the dorm room in the early hours of the morning. A strange whirring noise of some sort of machine grew through the air, building in intensity as she drew closer to the kitchen. Light poured through the ajar door, a sharp contrast to the complete darkness that Aster preferred. 

Just moments before, Aster had startled awake because of that incessant and unsettling noise. A pang of panic settled in her chest when she realized that her roommate, Dawn, and a strange smell floated through the air, causing her to crave something she couldn’t quite put her finger on, since it was early in the morning, and Aster could barely think, let alone recognize smells. 

After what seemed like endless wandering in the long hallway, Aster found herself directly in front of the kitchen door, swinging it open in one fluid motion while immediately bringing up her other arm to shield her eyes from the blindingly bright lights. “Wha-” 

“Oh,” said the familiar voice of the person she was looking for. “I didn’t mean to wake you.” 

When she pulled her arm away, letting her eyes adjust to the light, she took in the sight of Dawn perched on the kitchen counter, tapping her fingernails against the marble as the machine next to her filled up a pastel mug with coffee. 

Oh. Coffee. 

With that obvious relevation, the tension drained from Aster’s body, and she yawned as she leaned against the doorway. “It’s alright,” she said, sleep still clouding her voice. “What time is it?”

Dawn shrugged, a gesture that seemed intended to be nonchalant but came off as stiff. “Around 5:30, I’d say.” 

A groan escaped Aster’s mouth before she could stop herself. “It’s way too early.” . 

The coffee machine suddenly stopped, and the silence that filled the air in the wake of the buzzing noise felt empty, almost eerie. Aster looked around the kitchen with a new perspective, noting how there were still stars hanging in the indigo sky outside the window. The entire situation felt like a dream, like time had stopped and dropped her in a moment that didn’t feel real. But then Dawn broke the silence by pulling her mug off of the coffee machine. “Do you want some coffee?” she asked, reaching for the fancy bottle of cream resting on the counter next to her. “Or are you going back to bed?” 

She weighed her options as she felt Dawn’s eyes resting upon her, awaiting an answer. “I might as well stay up,” Aster finally said. “I mean, I don’t know if I could fall asleep again, not with the smell of coffee taunting me.” 

Dawn winced. “I’m sorry-” 

Aster waved off her apology, a smile coming to her face. “No, it’s no big deal, honest. Now, how do you work this thing?” 

“I’ll show you.” Dawn hopped off the counter and grabbed a mug from the cabinet. “People do a lot for me back home,” she said, as she showed Aster the different buttons one pressed to program the machine, “but I’m in charge of my coffee. No one else ever makes it right.” A note of pride crept into Dawn’s voice as she talked, but it wasn’t the kind of aloof pride that Aster was so used to seeing in her, but something more genuine. Something more real, in a way. 

As the whirring noise filled the air once again, Dawn started working on finishing her coffee, pouring just the right amount of cream and a kind of syrup that filled the air with a sugary sweet smell. She topped it off with a bit of whipped cream and a dusting of powdered cinnamon. 

“Yours is complex,” Aster remarked, keeping one hand on her mug so it didn’t fall out of the machine. “You come up with it yourself?” 

A slight blush climbed Dawn’s cheeks, and she glanced away. “It’s nothing, really,” she said. “But it’s one of my favorite luxuries, you know?” 

“Yeah,” Aster said, a smile growing on her face. “I think I do.” 

They smiled at each other, sharing a peaceful moment together in the early morning, the smell of fresh coffee swirling in the air between them.
