PLEASE
*SCREAMS IN DEATH NOTE*
Okay, I really want to share this.
It is a bit unusual for me, since I like to post only about my hyperfixations, but I want to share my love of musicals.
I love musicals sm. I enjoy songs, stories and especially symbolism, that can be put in. Not only in characters designs or lyrics, but in music.
I know it's the whole point, but finding connections between characters and instruments is so rewarding.
Recently I stumbled upon Death Note the musical. I knew of it since 2020,cuz of "They're only human", but now I've listened to half of the English concept album. There are no words in any language to express how good this musical is. The songs are total bangers. And they all have something in common. Light (the main character) and L (the antagonist. FYI the antagonist≠the villain) have their assigned instruments, that usually pop up when the character starts singing: electric/bass guitar and piano respectively. I'll explain why it's such a good symbolism.
For people who don't know Death Note, Light Yagami is a high school student, who stumbled upon a note book (aka Death Note) that allows him to kill people, whose name he wrote in a book. He starts to kill criminals, in the name of his own justice, which interests the police. L is a detective who has a great detective abilities. He starts to chase Light, whose criminal name is Kira. Ofc there are more to the plot, but in short this is the plot. They are each other's antagonist.
So why do their instruments matter? Basically, it all comes down to how they work and what they represent.
At first electric/bass guitar and piano are in no way similar. Piano is a classical instrument, which is present in many different musical styles, but is mostly associated with opera, classical musicals ect. This places L on the motal high ground and differentiates them as good and bad. But honestly, it all comes to details. To play a guitar you need to strum the strings, and to play piano you need to press the keys. Still very distant, aren't they? Yet when a person presses the key, a small hammer punches the string in the instrument, thus making the sound. This little detail makes so much sense plot wise. Despite all the differences, L and Light are very similar. They both are loners, incredibly clever, and sometimes use the same methods. Both Kira and detective are no strangers to gamble on other's lives (killing innocent for getting in the way/being close to find out his personality and using an inmate as a bait to roughly locate the killer). I'm in no way, shape or form a musician. I don't play any instrument, but I find this stuff amusing. Through only instruments the directors both opposed and compared. I love theatre...
Thank you for introducing me to this amazing musical. You have no idea how many animatics I have in my head (for example: "secrets and lies", "playing his game", "mortals and fools" And ect) and just jams (all mentioned before, "there are lines", "where's the justice" my beloved, "Kira" Ect)
