Do you think that seeing a successful world dominating Jack in Time After Time affected how Omi sees Jack? Has it made him more wary of being around/befriending Jack, having seen how ruthless he has the potential to become, or will Omi double down in the hopes that turning Jack good will prevent that? Or whatever take you have on it, of course.

Those deaths were extremely graphic, more than anything Omi had ever seen.

Omi watched Clay be cook and eviscerated by lasers, watched Kimiko be ripped apart by blade-like appendages, and watched Raimundo be crushed underfoot. All on Jack's orders. It filled him with enough hopelessness and guilt for this whole turn of events that Omi was prepared to just stand there and die himself, too.

Initially, I think Omi was just trying to suppress this as a future that, as long as he succeeded in his mission with Chase, everything would be fixed and everyone would be good and safe and happy, he could essentially compartmentalize the bad future as a bad dream. (And he definitely has nightmares of it often.) It was too visceral for him to think about too directly without just flaring up his urge to let himself die again.

But I think, after the mission is over and they're back in their timeline, and Omi comes to terms with everything he really just witnessed and experienced, Dojo and Chase's words help Omi turn that pain into the sort of resolve you mention.

"The future can always be changed."

Just as all this has made Omi more determined than ever to carve out a future for himself and Chase to be together through any means necessary, Omi will also take that philosophy and want to carve out a future where Jack doesn't grow into that.

He's wanted to be something of a mentor for Jack for a while, but after he gets back from that future, I think Omi will take that self-appointed role even more seriously.

After all, Omi also saw a timeline where Jack lives with the monks and sacrificed himself to let them get away and fix things. The world is a complex place, and sometimes destiny is out of one's own control. After all this, Omi's more than determined to see if he can be the one to place destiny in his hands, then.

He certainly wouldn't give up on wanting to reach Jack or on believing in the goodness in him, just like he didn't give up on wanting to be with Chase after watching what Chase made of the world in Finding Omi.

The nightmares of that dark future Jack will persist, but Omi's actually pretty good at suppressing what he wants to suppress.

(writerkat) In all flashback scenes and storytelling about Chase Young before he became evil, it's interesting that he always looks the same as he does in the present. Just Nicer. Same armor, same hair, even his complexion is the same in flashbacks, even though he gets visibly pallor after drinking the soup compared to when we actually see him.

I almost wonder if it might not be the recollections of the individual person that colors how Chase was seen and how his story was told.

Guan, who told Chase's tale through a stylized storybook, didn't even mention Hannibal Roy Bean. Just said that Chase used to be on the side of good, before he betrayed the forces of good for power when he became evil. Who or what made the offer didn't matter. To Guan the heavier part was the betrayal. He probably Knew who gave Chase the soup, but the fact of the matter is that Chase sold his soul and betrayed Guan and Dashi. So that heavily colors Guan's recollection of events. Chase Young sold his soul and then he hurt Guan and Dashi. That's it, end of story. The fact it's in a book might even be a personal way to distance himself from that part of the past. The only memories he wants to hold onto now are those where Chase Young is an enemy, Chase Young once being on the side of good was just a thing that happened a long time ago and is no longer.

Dojo's later retelling, on the other hand, is kind of interesting. He includes the detail of Hannibal Roy Bean and his offering the soup to Chase. Though his recollection still paints Chase as clad in armor and looking the same as he does in present. (Guan looks the same too, so maybe that's a bit of a limitation of the medium, but his looks still didn't go through as massive a change as Chase's.) Dojo is sympathetic enough that he may remember Chase's better qualities even through his fear of him, though. Because the flashback over his telling of the story shows a Chase Young that's hesitant and unsure of accepting the soup and listening to Bean, and the implied pain of the transformation after drinking it.

Who knows. Maybe, in the end, it's a little easier on those who knew him back then to think that Chase was always the way he is and there was nothing that could have been done to prevent it. That there was always the Prince Of Darkness lurking under the surface of Chase Young the Xiaolin Dragon, so the betrayal feels a bit more like it had more of a Reason than him so viciously turning on them for seemingly no reason, even after they considered him a friend.

Good catch!

image

It seems like, even for the people who were around before Chase’s transformation, they remember him back then as he is now, with spikey green hair, pointed ears, slitted eyes, dark armor, and pale skin. We didn’t see the original Chase’s true appearance until Omi went back to see for himself.

image

In the case of Dojo’s flashback, it’s possible that this is just what the kids are imagining based on what Dojo is telling them, or it’s possible that Dojo’s memory is just being a little fallible, as it often is. But still, forgetting that Guan used to have a braid is a much smaller detail than forgetting that Chase used to look completely different. Guan mostly looks the same as back then, but this isn’t the Chase Young that Dojo grew up with at all.

Maybe it’s because Dojo’s view of Chase changed so dramatically after Chase almost cooked him into soup. So perhaps Dojo’s mental image of Chase is the more monstrous version that probably haunts some of Dojo’s nightmares. But like you said, the weird thing is, despite the fact that this is visually the same as the current Chase, his mannerisms really are kinder. He smiles genuinely at Guan, he looks nervous and anxious about the deal, he frowns and shies away from Hannibal. It looks a little odd to see this personality in that body. He’s so wary and scared of Hannibal, way more so than actual good Chase was back then, when he was willing to talk back and snap at Hannibal and doubt him, argue with him, etc.

image

So Dojo still remembers a friendly, heroic Chase who would be hesitant to give away his soul like this and enjoyed his friendship with Guan. In fact, he remembers Chase as someone even kinder and more timid than he was back then.

Like you said, Dojo’s memory is still ultimately sympathetic towards Chase. His more positive traits from back then are still intact in Dojo’s memory. There’s just some part of him that’s still… othered, in a way that he wasn’t at the time.

Whatever discrepancies are in Dojo’s recollections, I feel like they’re subconscious.

Guan, however, is very conscious and deliberate in the things he misrepresents about Chase’s past.

image

Guan has this whole book draw to tell the backstory of Chase. Not to spread the legend for knowledge sake, because this isn’t common knowledge. Omi is very bookish and didn’t know about this, so this isn’t a published book or one that’s widespread. So Guan apparently keeps this on his person in case he has to personally talk about Chase. He might have even made it by himself.

Or maybe Guan just made the book as his way of giving himself closure about Chase’s betrayal and making it make sense in a way that suits his current legacy.

Chase is already in his armor, already has his spiked hair. And even in the part of the book where Chase was a good guy who fought against the forces of evil, in Guan’s version of the events, Chase fought alone.

image

In Guan’s version of events, Hannibal Roy Bean doesn’t exist, or at least isn’t mentioned as he is. Chase Young traded his soul to a standardly designed Satanic goat figure, and he did it for immortality and nothing else. It’s very unsympathetic and straightforward.

It’s very stylized, simplified, purposely inaccurate. It’s either how Guan is choosing to remember the events or how Guan has decided he’s going to pretend to remember them.

But either way, both Dojo and Guan seem to either purposely or subconscious distance themselves from the real Chase that they both knew growing up. Neither Guan nor Dojo described Chase as a ā€œformer friendā€ in either of their stories, even though that’s what he was. I guess it hurts less after all this time to simply pretend otherwise.

I see this, and I'm left thinking. Because as far as I know, Dashi never abandoned Dojo. But if you're talking about Dashi dying. Well. That's a different story isn't it?

Because dragons are clearly an extremely long lived race, possibly timeless. And in a scenario where people can choose immortality, such as Guan and good!Chase, without becoming villains (like Chase did), well.

Choosing a good but finite life could be seen as abandoning your immortal friend, couldn't it?

(Which of course could also apply to Omi and Chase, shhh.)

It’s being played for comedy, but Dojo clearly has serious abandonment issues because of his last master.

So I just finished xiaolin showdown: I wanna talk about it. Spoilers.

I really liked the show! I knew I would thanks to childhood memories of it but I think it holds up alright even today! Imma break it down in what I Did like and what I Didn't like (I think Imma make a different post talking about the Wu). This is longer than I thought it would be. I'm sorry.

What I liked

The Wu themselves, love me magic shit even if they get repetitive at times(fr there are like 4 that just give the power to fly).

I fucking love Jack Spicer and Clay Bailey. They are my boys do you hear me! Love how Jack just won't quit and how Clay is just so painfully Texas. My bois

Love the magic in general! How all die of the main characters get to master their element and get special weapons and gear to help. Wish there was more time to flush all of it out tho ,but hey what can you do(other than post head canons).

Dojo Kanojo Cho

Just his name is fucking amazing, and I did like some of his jokes

And his powers were cool! I wish we could have seen the limits of his shapeshifting powers.

I did like wuya and wish we could have seen her do more witchy things.

Chase Young was also very cool.

I also like panda bubba's design and I kinda wish there was more of him. I wanna do things to him DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT

I already said this BUT I just love how all of them got individual weapons that I don't think were Shen Gong Wu? I think.

Master fung and dojo... Had a very odd relationship. I'm 90% sure they were at least fucking by how dojo acted when he went to a different temple and after that it was just very. Weird.nit Bad weird but still.

Wish we could have seen more of their families. kimono's dad was fucking adorable. I want to fuck her dad

Also Love le mime!!! I also wanna fuck him, I am not taking. criticism at this time

I also liked Jermaine and wish he could have been able to join fully or show up more.

Over all love this show.

What I didn't like

How they treated Jack. Idk man I just thought it was weird how the heros tournamented him so much? Like ya he's a ass but like, y'all are the heros why are you acting borderline worse than him???

I also kinda wish he could have officially joined the xiaolin side, I feel like they alluded to him switching multiple times but then he never does and I think that was a waste.

LET JACK BE THE DRAGON OF METAL.

LET JACK MAKE THEM AN AWESOME DEFENSE SYSTEM.

LET JACK DO A FAKE OUT WHERE HE PRETENDED TO GO BAD AND THEN FUCK THE BADDIES UP WITH SABOTAGE.

Idk dude he deserved betted

Also didn't like how he started out at Least semi competent but then just became a pathetic joke? And not even fuc pathetic. He's not a wet dog he's just pathetic.

I wish we could have seen Raimundo's family if not just a sibling or his parents, just something.

Fuck Clay's dad. Not in a hot way. I hate him.

Omi had such an ego. Like dude, please stop.

I really wish we could have seen more of Fung and Omi's relationship. I kinda wish it was more father and son rather than teacher and student since it seems like Omi lived there his entire life.

I also wish we saw more of Fung being badass. I feel there was a lack of that.

I'll say it again, there are a bunch of shen gong wu that kinda just repeat? And some Wu that don't seem like they should be categorize as Wu? Idk I'll make a different post about it bc there a lot to say.

Le mime was cool and I want to know more about him.

I want to know more about almost everyone honestly.

Give Me Their Backstories. Please

This is all I can think of ATM. I'll add more later probably.

Thank you if you made it down here. Let me know what's your fav and least fav about xs.
