English isn't my first language so please spare me for any grammar mistakes🙈

Breathing hard, deep as I could, I racked my brain, looking for a way to get Jake to talk about his past. Where should I start? From this Mark Willow?

I was scared. Scared to know what stories his past held. Jake himself stated that Mark Willow was a man who’d do anything to get his work done. And obviously, he was an evil man.

How in the world did someone like that become Jake’s mentor? Does that mean Jake himself was working with him in the past? Doing evil stuff?

I took a deep breath, calming my heart, thumping anxiously. ‘Let’s trust him. Jake is the man I love. If I don’t trust him…who else will?’ I chanted in my head, taking his rough, wounded hands into mine.

“Jake. I…really didn’t want to pry into your past….” It was harder than I thought; how could I get him to talk without hurting his feelings?

I was too naive. For Jake, his past was painful, whether Jake himself was good or bad. ‘Let’s do this quickly. Let’s not get emotional. Be rational. Rational…’

“I tried my best not to. But I can’t, not anymore.” His eyes trembling, Jake stared right into my eyes. He knew.

He knew for sure what I was going to ask next.

“MC-I-I’m sorr-” I held my finger on his lips, interrupting him. An apology was the last thing I wanted to hear from Jake. My heart ached whenever Jake would apologize or look at me apologetically. Besides, they couldn’t bring us anywhere.

“Jake. Stop saying sorry and tell me. Please, I think I deserve to know that much.” As my grip on his hands strengthened, his head fell further. Jake was unable to look me in the eye.

This was something I had noticed in the past as well. Jake tends to declare his opinion and leave without giving me a chance to argue. Well, not anymore.

“How did you meet him? How did he become your mentor? What sort of work did you do together? I have tons of questions for you.” Hearing him sigh heavily, I cupped his cheeks in my palms, gently raising his head to face me. “You told me that you were one of the good guys. I could tell that as I worked with you to find Hannah too.” I kissed his forehead, to which he stiffened up, “And I believe everything you said. Jake, I believe you.”

--------------------

“Jake, I believe you.”

Those words were the words he desperately wished to hear four years ago. He wanted someone to believe him, that he never had any ill will. That everything he did, was for a good reason.

But why was he hearing those words from this woman? She didn’t even know him at that time. She knew nothing about what kind of a person he was before they met.

Yet this woman convinced him.

He had to tell her everything. For once, he ‘wanted’ to share his part of the story.

Licking his dried-up lips, Jake cleared his throat. “I first met master while I was in the final year in the uni. My friend Kyle and I used to develop programs for fun. We sometimes entered competitions as well. Kyle nor I had great financial situations. So we used to split up the prize money. That year, we won an international competition.”

She nodded lightly to let him know that she was listening. “Many well-known companies offered us jobs after that. So we chose the best one out of them. Just as we graduated, we were hired, and the paycheck was also high. We thought…” A lump in his throat swallowed his voice. Remembering the past…was much harder than he imagined, especially with all the tragedies that fell upon them afterward. "-that all our misfortunes was over." After a pause, he continued.

“Master was our supervisor at the company. He was a great man who was very skilled as well. I always respected him, though he eventually became my hero.”

--------------------

Jake’s eyes kept reddening as he continued. “Maybe I considered him a father figure. You know…” He said, a faint smile on his haggard face, “For kids, their father is their hero. But for me…I grew up never knowing who my father was. I only found out by chance.”

My heart sank. Though he was Hannah’s and Lily’s father, Jake’s father had never seemed to have considered Jake as his son. I wanted to go to Duskwood at once and kick him, at least once.

But this was not the time to get emotional. Be rational.

“One day, master told us a secret, me and Kyle. He was a vigilante. He would hack into government officials’ computers and reveal their corruptions. Even some well-known companies were shut because of his work. I believed he was like a modern-time Robin Hood.”

"Kyle didn’t want to get involved, but I did. Unlike Kyle, I didn’t have a family to protect, so it felt alright for me to take a little risk.”

“So you worked together with him as a vigilante as well?” I asked, to which he nodded, confirming.

“We meddled in many things, especially in government affairs. Corruption was everywhere. I was disgusted with people while my respect towards master only increased day by day. Then one day, Kyle called me in the middle of the night. He seemed to be in a hurry. He told me, ‘Master was not the man you believe him to be. He is deceiving you so he can use you.’ He hung up and disappeared since that day.”

“Disappeared?!” I exclaimed. Jake nodded. He seemed to have gotten more calm and collected.

“Soon, I found out what Kyle meant. Master’s real job was to work for other organizations to bring down the power of the other companies. A gap in the hierarchy will appear whenever high officials or powerful companies are brought down. Those people would fill them. Master even worked for foreign governments, sometimes even leaking the national security data.”

Why Jake was so persistent in not trusting anyone was clear now. His father figure betrayed him; of course, he wouldn’t want to be betrayed again.

“I tried to expose him then. But before I could, the FBI suddenly came to arrest me. I managed to run away, then found out later that master had exposed me. After that, for four years, I tried my best to find Kyle. He seemed to know something. But there were no traces of him at all. Apparently, he had moved out with his mother and sister. His trail was cut off from there.”

Jake leaned forward, tightly gripping my hands. His eyes seemed to plead. “Master always sees one step ahead. MC, even now, he must be planning to kill us and I-” His lips trembled, Jake was stressed, and he looked so helpless. Helpless for me. “I am honestly not confident in protecting you. So please-”

Jake’s plea was cut off by a loud sound in the living room. Jake immediately moved in front of me, guarding me against any harm.

Chapter 8 - One step closer to ‘our’ life…

“What are they talking about?” Oshi looked up as Jessy was staring at the counter, “Who?”

“My brother and Jake.”

“Huh?” She turned abruptly to see Jake having a conversation with Phil over a drink. “What could they be talking about?”

Jessy was silent for a moment before carefully choosing words, “Um...You know, Oshi, I think-It’s just a thought, okay? I could be wrong! Like ninety percent wrong!”

She tilted her head towards the side, asking Jessy, “What is it, Jessy?”

“Uh..So, I think Phil maybe …really maybe..like you?”

Oshi laughed hard, “What? No way! He just enjoys flirting around! He isn’t serious.” Jessy rolled her eyes, “Oh well. If you think so.”

***

Jake was changing clothes after the shower while she sat on the bed, ready to sleep. She noticed the tattoo on his back, starting from the back of his right shoulder. Though she did notice it several times before, Oshi never got a chance to take a closer look.

“That tattoo…”

He turned around to her voice, “Hm?”

“You have a tattoo on your back.”

He blinked, unable to understand shortly before getting it, “Ah. Yes.”

She waved a hand, kneeling on the bed. “ Come closer.” Obliging, he sat on the corner of the bed. A snake wrapped around a bunch of spider lilies. The snake reached the end of his right clavicle through the numerous spider lilies. It suits him and doesn’t at the same time, she thought.

As her fingertips touched his bare back, Jake stiffened, akin to a stone statue. Leaning forward, she pressed her lips on his back, causing a sigh to escape his lips.

“When did you get it?”

She was still pressing her palms on his back; thus, he couldn’t turn to face her, albeit wanting to stop her from tormenting him this way. She would never know how hard it is for him to restrain his inner beast burning with passion. He sighed as he answered, “Around six or seven years ago. I can’t remember exactly.”

“I’m curious. How were you in the past? Before you had to hide, I mean.”

Jake turned around, taking her hands in his. “I’m also curious about you. Oshi, I want to know everything about you.”

She smiled while sitting on his lap, stroking the short black hair. “You go first.”

He was about to answer when his phone rang, interrupting them. He looked at the phone before telling her that he had to answer the call. As she nodded, he went ahead, still stroking her back as she leaned on his chest.

“Hello.”

She could see his eyes lighting up as he said with a smile, “Thank you very much. Yes. I will move in as soon as possible.” Tilting her head, she waited for him to end the call. Was he moving out? Where was he going? It would be great if it was somewhere near her home. They could see each other often that way.

Jake stroked her back, smiling, “Oshi, actually, I have a request for you.”

“Request?”

“Yes. You can refuse if you want to. No need to feel pressured.”

Oshi straightened her back, facing him, “What is it, Jake?”

Before continuing, albeit a little awkwardly, he was quiet in thought, “So, I am moving out to a permanent residence. It is near your workplace.”

Her lips curved up, “Really! Great! We can see each other often then!”

He licked his lips before stating his actual request. “So I was wondering if you’d like to…move out with me?”

Her eyes widened to his request.

She currently lived in a studio apartment near her workplace, which she shared with her best friend Sarah, So of course, him moving there was out of the question. He mentioned that the place was near her workplace, which probably meant he wanted to move in with her from the very beginning, even before he came to see her.

How could she say no? Someone could criticize her for being too reckless and even too trusting. How could she follow a guy whose background was so unclear and secretive, so blindly?

But Jake was not just ‘a guy’. For her, Jake was Jake. Whatever his past was, the present is, how his future would turn out. She just wanted to be there for him. Become his home, where he could return to when life is hard.

“I’ll have to inform my parents first.” Then she meekly tugged the waistband of his trousers, causing him to flinch. “You’ll need to talk to them as well. Will you?”

His lips curved up, and all the tension built up on his face relaxed. “Of course. I am no longer a shady hacker wanted by the government. I can face your parents without shame.”

She chuckled, “Jake. You aren’t going to a battle. You just have to…answer a few questions, I guess?”

“Alright.”

The night had just started, and so was their life together.

-To be Continued.

I swear what Jake talked with Phil at the Aurora will come up in a future chapter ;) ><

Chapter 3 - Distant Feelings.

[Faye! Richy!]

Jessy’s voice got swallowed by a sob. Faye waited patiently for Jessy to collect herself. Trembling lips as well as the lump blocking her throat never allowed a word out anyway. Moments passed; Jessy only wept. Without a word from her, Faye could speculate. What horrible thing happened to Richy?

Faye clenched her jaw. Waiting was useless. She didn’t want to get involved in Duskwood any further. Every time she tried to, she somehow failed.

Even now, despite the urge to turn away, Faye ended up consoling Jessy. Listening as she wept while taking a taxi to Duskwood was her way of doing so. She sighed. One month and five days had passed since the Pine Glade festival. Richy’s condition was serious even when he was found that day.

Maybe he would pay for his sins that way, Faye closed her eyes. She had to make sure she wouldn’t get overwhelmed. Faye was too carefree with the group. How could she even imagine finding a kidnapped girl she never knew or heard of at the very least? How unnerved she was to actually work together with a government-wanted hacker? The most ridiculous of all, how could she fall for someone whose face she did not know?

Looking back at her own foolishness, a scoff slipped her tightly closed mouth. Faye lit up the screen of her phone, in a daze. Contrary to her stubbornness, Faye was still waiting for Jake. At least one text, telling her that everything was okay. That one text was all she wished for.

Getting off the taxi, Faye adjusted her distorted face into an indifferent one. Clenching her fists tightly, she stepped towards the hospital.

***

As she expected, Richy was dead.

Jessy was crying endlessly; the shoulder of her dark green dress was drenched in Jessy’s tears. Faye patted her red hair continuously, with no word. No words could soothe her. Faye knew this from experience. Unless she could bring back Richy, she should not ask Jessy to stop the tears.

No one told Hannah. At least for now, they wished not to let her know. Dan was the most upset, though he never admitted to it. Cleo, Lily and Thomas were still shocked.

Will this turn out to be a nightmare?

It won’t.

Faye knew this better than anyone. Faye, throughout her childhood, wished that the horrible accident was a nightmare. That she would wake up, that her mother would hug her tightly, muttering that it’s alright. That her father would pat her head with a worried face and ask, “Did you have a nightmare, sweetheart?”

She stood there with blank eyes.

It was overbearing. Faye wanted to shrug off Jessy, who was still crying profusely. But she couldn’t. Faye always bore a soft spot for Jessy. She sighed involuntarily and checked her phone.

Still nothing.

At this point, Faye hated herself, who waited for him. Hated Jake, who did not reach her at all. Faye hated everything right now.

If there really was a god or whatever out there, Faye wanted to tell them one thing.

“You seem to hate me a lot.”

***

Was it her imagination that was weird?

Faye could swear that Jake would be drowning in guilt by now. That their first meeting would be full of melancholia.

Her lips curved up slightly.

She had been wrong from the very beginning.

The man spoke in a deep voice, his cornflower blue eyes seemed unable to hold her gaze. At least he seemed to have some guilt.

Faye quietly sat down in front of the man. At this point, she did not expect him to pull out the chair, not that it was necessary anyway. The man sat down as well, awkward, as she expected. But it was not adorable. Her heart did not flutter, not even once.

It was not surprising at all. It had been nearly three years after all. Her love for Jake had died down over time.

“Hello, Jake.”

***

Faye carried a calm demeanor. Too calm that he was ill at ease. To be honest, he expected her to be a more expressive woman.

Or maybe she was just too angry?

That’s understandable. First, he hadn’t contacted her for almost three years. Not even a simple text, informing her that he escaped safely. He was at fault.

Just how foolish was Jake?

“Hello, Jake.” The woman uttered in an unenthusiastic voice. Faye was angry at him, after all.

A faint spark of excitement was born somewhere within him. How far would her wrath go? He wondered.

“Hello, Faye. It’s nice to see you, finally.” His heart raced, anticipating her reaction.

“Me too.” staring at him with still eyes, she leaned forward a little. “By the way, I’m hungry.”

His eyes widened. Clearing his throat, “Oh. Where are my manners?” he turned to call a waiter, embarrassed.

After placing their order, she asked indifferently. “Why a French restaurant? Do you like French food?”

Raising one brow, he contemplated, “That’s not it…I had to choose a scarcely populated area. This was the only decent place here.” To which she nodded briefly, agreeing with his words.

A waitress placed the dishes politely. Soon they started eating. He stole a glance once in a while. Turned out Faye was not an emotional person. Yet she was an attractive woman with a mysterious aura. Did she still love him?

Either way, Jake was an idiot who left her alone for so long.

“By the way, Jake?” She leaned forward, “You are Jake, right? I’m not mistaken, I hope?”

Chapter 10 - A hint of selfishness in my heart…

Jessy - Oshi, are you going back today?

Oshi- Yep. In the evening.

Jessy- I was busy earlier. Sorry I couldn’t text you back.😬

Oshi- It’s okay, Jessy.😊

Jessy- But what’s this about moving in with Jake?

Oshi- Jake has rented an apartment near my workplace. He asked me to move in together!😄

Jessy- Wow! Really?

Oshi- That was just the beginning! You know, my parents worry easily, right? So I told him I have to inform them first.

Jessy- Don’t keep me waiting!🤩

Oshi- He talked to them! 😍 I was so surprised! And he did so without any hesitation. My parents seemed to like him too!😄

Jessy-Wow! Oshi, congratulations! Jake must be serious about you!❤️️

Oshi- I know, right! I just had to brag about it to someone! 😂

Jessy- 🤣

Oshi- The only thing I’m worried is about Sarah☹️She’ll be alone there

Jessy- ☹️Aren’t you close with the neighbors?

Oshi- Of course! Most of us know each other, as we all mostly went to the same uni. That’s why I can move out without worrying too much.

Jessy- That’s a relief then. 🙃

“Oshi? Why haven’t you eaten yet?”

She turned back to find Jake, who had just finished his work. “I was waiting for you.”

He frowned, “I told you it’d be way past the time for lunch when I’d be done. You should have your meals on time.”

She scoffed, “Then what about you? I’ve only been living with you for two nights and a day, but you always skip meals and never sleep until dawn.”

“I always went to sleep with you, don’t you remember?” He said, avoiding her eyes. It seemed that Jake couldn’t lie to her.

“Yes. I remember you ‘going to’ sleep with me, ONLY to get back to work after I fall asleep.”

The dark blue eyes seemed to panic at first, and doubt fell on them. “How would you know that? You were asleep.”

“I know because I usually wake up in the middle of the night. Didn’t you know? I’m an insomniac.”

He sulked as she mentioned insomnia, hurrying her to add, “Jake, now don’t be like you’re the cause of my insomnia. I have suffered from that forever. It only worsened a little.” She hugged him, pecking a kiss on his lips as he looked down.

“We should hurry. Otherwise, we won’t have time to see Richy.”

Handing her the plate, Jake asked, curious, “I heard that it was you who convinced the group to forgive Richy.”

“You heard?”

“Yes. From Lily.”

She sat down, a bitter smile on her face. “Well. I can sort of understand where Richy was coming from, you know? Guilt can be such a strong emotion at times.”

He took a bite and waited for her to continue, “Think about it. Jennifer’s death was indeed an accident, but abandoning her body in the forest and feigning ignorance for ten years is…not something anybody can do. Hannah was depressed, Richy was led to do such a horrible thing, and there’s Amy, who took her own life in vain. All because they were cowards.”

“Cowards?”

“There’s something I believe firmly as I go on. You should always atone for your sins. Only that way can you move on and live your life. That’s what they should’ve done. They should’ve admitted to their faults and paid for their crimes. Though it couldn’t have brought Jennifer back to life, at least those three would have already moved on.”

She dropped the fork, biting her lips, “Do you know what Richy told me that day in the mine? They have to pay for their sins, only that way, the monster or whatever would disappear. Also, if you and I never got involved, nobody would’ve known what he did, you know? Everything could’ve gone according to his plan. Richy somehow untied himself and saved Hannah. While Micheal Hanson would’ve died that day.”

Jake placed a hand on her trembling hands. “Do you think that would’ve been better?”

“No. It would be too unfair for the real Micheal Hanson. He did nothing to be called a kidnapper and a murderer even. But still, I’m so selfish to think it would’ve been a better result.”

As soon as Jake opened his mouth to say something, she spoke again. “Above everything, if Richy did nothing, or if they turned in eleven years ago, we would’ve never crossed paths. Especially you and me. It’s as if we achieved our happiness through their miseries.”

“Please don’t think that way, Oshi. You know you did your best for your friends. I know that, and they know that. I’m sure none of them regret meeting you.”

She smiled faintly as he held her hand, consoling her. The warmth of his hand spread across her entire body, warming up her desolate heart.

***

Richy grinned widely as she entered the hospital room. “Oshi! I didn’t expect to see you again so soon!”

“Hospital life must be boring.”

“Ha…Don’t even start-” Richy stopped as he spotted the stranger standing behind his friend. “Who is this gentlemen?”

Oshi giggled, “Four guesses?”

His eyes widened in surprise, “Jake?!” She applauded, grinning as she explained. “Yes. So somehow this guy decided to come back again, finally.”

“Wow! That’s great! I’m happy for you, Oshi.”

“Hehe! Thanks.” Turning back to Jake, who silently watched the two, she tugged his arm. “Say hi, Jake.”

“Hello.”

“It’s nice to see you, Jake.” Richy’s face turned bitter as he spoke, “Though it might not be so to you. I’m sorry I caused you so much trouble.”

“Aw. Richy. You’re at it again. It’s good to atone, but don’t be like that every time you see us. Even Dan feels awkward because of that, you know?”

Jake finally let out a word, “Yes. Many bad things indeed happened, but it’s nice to see you around.”

That wasn’t the nicest way to say it, but that was Jake being considerate. Her lips twitched as she forcefully stopped he lips from curving up.

Richy awkwardly laughed, not knowing what to say. Soon, he turned serious.

The Heist - Chapter 20

You can read the previous chapters here :)

Previous chapter

Warnings: Mention of death, Gore, Swearing and a little spice(?) Kissing only though

From the previous chapter:

“NOOOO! JAKE!!!!!”, I scream my lungs out on not seeing him anywhere. He didn’t jump with the car right? “No no no, this can’t happen. “And I start running towards the ditch to figure shit out when suddenly…

Continuing from there :

Suddenly a hand grabs my arm, pulling me to a hard chest. I struggle, twisting my body but shit, this guy is too strong. Jake can’t go like that. I must save him.

I struggle harder, then bite his arm till I taste blood. Shit. Is this guy even human? He just wouldn’t budge. I spit the blood to get rid of the disgusting metallic taste in my mouth when I feel the guy's breath. He pulls me closer and whispers, “Shh. You have to move to a safer place first.”

What bullshit is this guy spewing?

I struggle harder when I hear his faint voice again, “I’m sorry. But we have to move. Immediately.” I am about to turn my head and ask what the fuck is he talking about when his hand hit my neck. Somewhere between my nape and collarbone? Shit.

I’ve seen this in movies.

The surroundings turn black. I have to move before I lose it. I am struggling to move, basically crawling on the floor. But damn. This guy just won’t let me move an inch.

Through fading consciousness, I think I mutter something. I can’t hear. What am I talking about?

Ah, I can guess.

Jake…please don’t die.

***

I feel my face rubbing on wood. Hardwood? Damp smell? Shit. Fuck that damn carotid chop or whatever it is called. I don’t have time for this bullshit. I have to see what happened to Jake.

I dropped the damn burner phone too. At this point, the only thing I have is the revolver Jake handed me…

Fuck. There’s no way the guy who kidnapped me would let me keep it.

I shouldn’t open my eyes immediately, I think to myself. Making no move as much as possible, I slowly open my eyes. Only enough to gain my vision a little. The room is dark, I am lying on a wooden bed? Confirming there’s no one in the room beside me, I open my eyes completely. I notice another thing as well.

Damn. Is this guy crazy?

My hands nor legs were tied at all. What kind of a kidnapper would be this stupid? Wait.

The revolver is with me too?

What the fuck? Could it be James? Maybe he sent someone?

I immediately rise as I hear footsteps. I take the revolver in my hands and hide behind the door. Whoever opens the damn door won’t be able to see me right away. I can have the advantage of surprise. Of course, it’s more likely there will be other men too.

Still, I’ll go as far as I can. And Jake, you will have to fucking face my wrath when I find you. How dare you scare me like this?

It will do no good to shoot this guy. If only I can just knock him out.

Soon, the door opens. I knock his head with the handle of the revolver.

Fuck. He only hurt his head. A black-haired man with dark green eyes turns to me, his face is distorted. It must be quite painful there. That’s what you get for kidnapping me, dude.

I point the revolver in his direction. Should I say ‘hands in the air? Well, before I say anything he raises his hands over his head. Right under the wrist of his right arm, there’s a bite mark. Yes. I only believe that it was done by a human because I did it. But there’s no way anyone is gonna believe that. The damn metal taste is still burning in my throat.

Exhaling loudly, he rolls his eyes. Is he annoyed? How dare you, bastard? Am I not the one who should be annoyed here? I was the one who got kidnapped?

I open my mouth to curse but he beats me to it. “Fuck! Where did you even find this woman? Is she a dog or what?”

Do you dare say that you fucking asshole?! I am even considering pulling the damn trigger. I hear a voice, ‘the voice’.

“Don’t underestimate my girl.”

My hands lose their grip but I soon give strength. I still don’t know Jake’s condition. What if he has been caught too?

Wait, he left me the damn revolver. Did he take out the bullets?

“MC, it’s okay now.” Jake walks in, pushing the other guy aside. He is still in one piece. His blue eyes curving pleasantly. I feel my entire body finally cooling down.

How dare he smile like that?

He is caught off guard, so my slap successfully lands on its destination. The blue irises widen, and Jake is now rubbing his cheeks. “W-why?”

I take a step forward. Grab him by the shoulders, bending him to my face level. I whisper in his ear, intentionally exhaling a hot breath. “Your punishment for scaring the shit out of me earlier.” Licking his earlobe, I smirk as I feel him shudder. “Of course, there will be more.”

Jake visibly gulps, then I grab him again and put my lips on his. I don’t give a fuck about the guy before us. We are already in a room, so how about he fuck off?

Jake seems to think the same as his tongue soon slips through my open lips. Damn. How dare he always make me forgive him so easily? The nerve of him.

As we part to catch our breath, Jake reluctantly loosens the grip on my waist. “MC, this is Kyle.” My eyes widen as mine meet the dark green ones. He has a hint of redness on his cheeks. With an awkward smile, Kyle greets me, nodding.

Of course, he is embarrassed after witnessing our reunion kiss. Sorry but I don’t feel sorry at all.

***

“Why are you suddenly helping us?”

I ask, crossing my arms. Apparently, Kyle has now changed his mind not to stay silent anymore. He wants to help us bring Mark Willow down. Why suddenly?

Who knows if Mark himself sent Kyle to us?

Kyle chuckles under his breath, before sighing. “Of course. If it’s Jake’s lover she has to be this much at the very least.”

I frown. Yes, I’m happy that he called me ‘Jake’s lover’ but this is not the time for that. “What?”

Shaking his head lightly, Kyle lets his head down. “Master…That bastard killed my mother. My sister is all I have now but she’s in a coma. If I am to protect her, I must bring him down.”

This is all too complicated. Kyle is dishevelled as well, he looks like he needs some time to pull himself. Not to mention, treat the wounds I caused, if possible. I sigh, kneading my brows. Turning to Jake, “Let’s take a break. Can we afford that?”

Jake nods, “Yes. We can’t move out until it’s dark anyway. Also, I suppose they’re probably looking for our bodies by now.”

My heart aches as the car invaded my mind again, “How could you do that to such a beauty? To kill her like that? You’re heartless.” He chuckles, “Since I’ve got a beauty far beyond her,” pecking his lips on my nose playfully, he smirks. “Couldn’t help it.” I can feel my cheeks heating up.

Yes. By now Kyle has already left the room. It’s better that way, isn’t it? I was about to kick him out if not.

His lips crash on mine, this time more powerfully yet desperately. He runs a hand through my back while the other clutches my waist, gently but strongly. He licks my lower lip gently, asking me for access. I open my lips in a daze. His tongue invades my mouth, gently grazing over my teeth, then the cheeks. Soon, Jake presses his tongue on mine, inviting me to join him. I wrap my arms around his neck, pulling him closer.

Soon, we part as my lungs couldn’t take it anymore. Panting, I look into his hazy blue eyes. Eyes filled with desire.

Fuck. If only that Mark Willow bastard didn’t exist. We could’ve continued for sure right?

“Seriously,” I ask, still gasping for air. “How the hell did you escape there? I thought you fell with the car for sure.”

Chapter 11 - Unknown hearts…

Richy awkwardly laughed, not knowing what to say. Soon, he turned serious.

“This might even be the last time we meet at the hospital.”

“Hannah said she’d do her best to drop the case. But the police are saying they can proceed with it even if the victim doesn’t want it or something.” She got up, sighing. “Let’s wait and see. Richy, never give up your hopes for a new life. Be it now or in the future. Okay?”

Richy smiled, “Yes, ma’am.”

“Then we’re going back. Adios, Richy!”

He chuckled, “Adios!”

On their way back, Oshi suddenly remembered seeing Jake and Phil together last night. She turned to him, holding his hand as they got in the taxi.

“Jake.”

“Hm?”

“What did you talk with Phil yesterday?”

He turned away to look out from the window, “Nothing much. Just small talk.”

She was amused to hear the word ‘small talk’ from Jake. Tilting her body to his side, she spoke in an entertained voice, “Really? My Jake had a small talk with Phil? Someone you met and talked to for the first time?”

Noticing him blush when she said ‘my Jake,’ Oshi giggled.

“Well. Because a certain someone often mentioned how Phil lifted their mood and offered free drinks every time she visited Duskwood. Not to mention how he texted occasionally. I just feel like I’ve known Phil for some time already.”

“No way! Are you jealous?” She giggled, squeezing his cheek.

He removed her hand grumpily, “No. I don’t dwell on such useless emotions.”

“Ha ha! You ARE jealous!”

“He just thanked me for clearing his name. Jessica had told him that I worked with you.” He finally gave up grumpily.

“Oh.Okay then.” She playfully tapped his shoulder, “You should’ve told me earlier, you know?”

***

Phil stood by the counter when Jake walked back in after a phone call. Phil greeted Jake with a smile, to which Jake politely greeted him back.

“Hello, Jake. I’ve heard a lot about you. It’s nice to meet you finally.”

“Hello. Same here, Phil Hawkins. I’ve heard a lot about you too.”

Phil was genuinely curious about this stranger. The mysterious hacker helped the group to find Hannah, along with Oshi. Not to mention it was thanks to him that Phil could get himself out. According to Oshi, Jake was a warm person who was a bit awkward with strangers. Albeit Jessy and the group bore a completely different idea. To them, Jake was a cold, heartless guy who they did not want to get involved with if it wasn’t for Oshi. However, Lily seemed to be very fond of him, unexpectedly.

However, things could be seen in a different light at the moment. Somehow, Jake seemed to get along well with the group in his own way. The group welcomed him initially, maybe because they did not want to hurt Oshi. And he didn’t appear to be as antisocial as he was described; instead, he was very introverted.

‘So this is the kind of man Oshi likes.’, Phil thought to himself.

“I actually wanted to thank you, personally. I heard from Jessy that you and Oshi worked together.”

Jake sat on a bar chair, holding the cocktail glass Phil handed him. “No need to thank me. Your name was only cleared in the process of finding Hannah.” taking a sip, he added. ”And it was Oshi who wanted to help you.”

Hearing her name in the voice of her beloved boyfriend left him with a bitter heart. Somehow it seemed that he shouldn’t approach her as easily as he did in the past. Somehow it was as if the distance between him and her suddenly escalated.

Phil could not defeat the bitter smile invading his face, “I see. Oshi and I…are good friends.”

“I know.” was what immediately left Jake’s lips, causing a sting deep down in his heart.

“Oshi really likes you. A lot. You were all she talked about whenever she got drunk.”

Sorrow and guilt were evident in the dark blue eyes as he muttered, almost inaudible, “…I see. I apologize if she caused you trouble.”

At least this boy was sincere about her. Phil had a feeling that he could let go of her if it was for this man.

But what was wrong with his thought process today?

Just until then, Phil was so sure that his feelings for Oshi were never more than a mere infatuation. Also, to add to that, it was not even that deep.

Then what caused him a bitter and pricking heart?

He wondered, did he actually love her? Not even realizing his feelings, did he really waste an entire year maintaining the boundaries?

No. That was not the case. He did know. He clearly knew the extent of his feelings for her. But he ignored it all.

Why?

It was simple. He wanted to be around her for a long time, look at her bright smile and sparkling eyes with a warm heart for as long as he could. Simple as that.

And now, her eyes were sparkling more than they ever did. That was enough for him. She was genuinely happy, not just pretending as she did in the past. And the cause of that tremendous happiness was the man sitting in front of him right now.

That was more than enough for him to let go of her. After all, the Oshi in his heart was always free, akin to a bird. She had to spread her wings and fly as much as she wanted to.

Someone might say he was foolish to let go of her in vain, or he was simply a coward who feared rejection. However, for him, that didn’t matter at all.

“I will let go of her. Now that I've seen you, I’m sure it won’t be in vain.” a huge grin was evident on his face as he let out his deepest secret. And who would’ve thought he would say this to the last person he thought he would?

The man who was loved by the girl he loved, by the same girl who had no clue of his feelings towards her.

Chapter 5 - The Deceiver and The Deceived

“It will be alright! Just stay still!”

“M-mom?” The little boy trembled under the devil’s grasp. His tiny hands were handcuffed. His wrists burned, full of bruises. Fresh blood dried over dried, darkened stains. They did not appear akin to an ordinary five-year-old child’s hands.

Clapping the calloused, tiny hands together, he begged. “Mom pl-please! I was wrong! I-I’m so-”

“SHUT UP!” a slender-looking hand flumped across the boy’s swollen cheeks. The nearly closed crack on chapped lips tore apart yet again. The boy cried in pain, though muffled his tiny mouth with desperate hands, belatedly.

It was too late.

Another slap caused his ears to ring. Thrown over the floor, the ruffled black hair grazed on the cold ground before his head.

“SHUT UP! I SAID SHUT UP!” The woman grabbed the boy by the back of his head, grabbing him closer. “You monster!” She uttered, in a daze. Was she even talking to him? “You are the problem! You MONSTER! YOU CURSED MONSTER!” she yelled, roughly throwing him on the floor once again.

The little boy hit his head on the wall. Why didn’t he die? Maybe he had to suffer even more.

A blurry image of his furious mother was engraved inside his heart that day. She was wearing thick make-up. Black stains of eyeliner under her bloodshot eyes, droplets of blood over the bright red lipstick, and the sunken cheeks did not scare him anymore.

Ha…how he wished to get out of that hell.

That his mother would look at him with loving eyes and call his name affectionately.

The woman suddenly smiled at him. Honestly, the little boy’s heart thumped with hope. The long fingernails grazed over the cornflower-coloured eyes as the woman gently wiped the tears away.

“My child. I always knew you were innocent.” She bent over and kissed his forehead. The boy’s heart lightened. The heavily bruised tiny lips curved up.

Oh. Finally. Mother loves me, finally.

A warm tear flowed through the cornflower blue eye, stinging the skin beneath.

The woman deepened her smile, “However,” clenching the tiny chin in her wicked hand. Nails dug into the pale skin, drawing out droplets of blood.

The little boy clenched his petite jaw, not letting a moan flow out. “These eyes! These eyes are the problem!”

Her thumb stabbed the left eye. If he hadn’t closed his eyes at the moment…

“OPEN YOUR EYES! YOU DEVIL! I HAVE TO DIG OUT THOSE EYES!” Continuously slapping his cheeks, the woman screamed. “GIVE MY SON BACK! GIVE MY HUSBAND BACK! YOU DEVIL!”

Fighting hard to keep his eyes closed, the little boy scratched the woman’s slender arms unconsciously. Feel of a sharp pain, caused the woman to push him hard. The petite body of the boy fell hard on the cold floor, his bones crushed painfully.

Yet again, the boy survived.

He definitely owned more sufferings.

He couldn’t die yet.

Not yet.

…

An unfamiliar ceiling welcomed him as he opened his eyes. His eyes stung, burning hot as he rubbed a hand over them roughly. Warm tear drops were wiped away, staining the cold hand.

Right. I moved places.

The man exhaled loudly.

3.12 am

Noticing a text, he unlocked the phone.

-How did things go? Did the target take the bait?

Target. Bait.

The man scoffed. To be honest, he was tired. Too tired to even lift a finger. Yet he had no choice but to do this. A job is a job after all.

-Call me as soon as you can. Doesn’t matter what time.

Licking his dry lips, the man placed the phone on his ear. Still lying on the bed, he listened to the ringing sounds in a daze.

[...]

“She wants to cut ties.”

[That’s not possible. Do whatever you need to.]

“...”

[This is our only chance. Do you know that three foreign countries are in search of him as well? We can’t let him off the hook this time. Use the girl to lure him out.]

“Why does it have to be me? I’m not an undercover agent, Maddie.” He asked, resentment mixed in the cold voice.

[Why are you mentioning this again? I thought we were done on this topic.]

Clenching his jaw, the man uttered no word. The woman sighed loudly, audible through the call.

[Choosing the wrong side. That was your mistake. Anyway, do whatever. We only care for the end result. We can’t make another mistake.]

“That’s why you should’ve used a pro.” the man hissed.

[You were his beloved friend. You know him better than anyone. Not to mention your looks. Even your aura. You’re the best person for this job.]

He scoffed, bewildered at her brazenness.

[Did she get fooled?]

“...think so.”

[Then that’s better. Just stay near her at all times. Wag your tail or something, if she has a soft spot for him, she’d definitely open up.]

He tossed the phone away without another word.

“By the way, your eyes are beautiful. Really.”

His frozen heart thumped. The eyes that received so much hatred, she called them beautiful.

She must have a weird taste.

Kyle scoffed.

He was supposed to use this woman to capture that guy. A government wanted hacker, who had been a headache to them for such a long time.

Jake.

Chapter 6 - Disquiet minds.

“I’m going to set off now.” The man wearing a black hooded figure took her in his. His hands were affectionate, holding hers as if they were made of glass.

Faye didn’t need another moment to know who this man was. Her eyes widened; her chest tightened.

Jake! Don’t go! The FBI will show up!

No matter how hard she tried moving her mouth, she failed. Soon, her lips moved on their own accord, “You don’t have to do this… I can still go.”

“I told you, I cannot allow you to put yourself in danger.”

Richy is our culprit! Please, Jake! Richy won’t harm me! You’re in worse danger!

Tears escaped her eyes, unable to convey her words to him. Again, Faye spoke, raising her voice as she did. “But I have to allow you to do so? Why don’t the same rules apply for the both of us?”

It was then.

Faye realized. This conversation occurred before Jake left for the Iron-splinter mine instead of her.

It was useless. This isn’t the reality. Yet, Faye looked at his face attentively. She had to see his face. At least for a split second, Faye wanted to lock eyes with his. This could be their first and last meeting.

But she couldn’t.

No matter how hard she looked, his face was blurred.

“Because I have made the decision to protect you.” He declared. Gently taking her hands to his lips. The warm lips touched her skin, spreading warmth to her heart.

“At any cost.”

Don’t! Jake!

Please don’t go!

Extending a hand, Faye ran towards the distancing hooded figure. She screamed his name.

Jake!

Yet he didn’t seem to notice her voice at all. Faye ran harder.

However, he was always faster.

Always…

Faye stopped for a second to catch her breath. Suddenly, a gunshot ran through her ears. Faye looked up; her tired eyes widened.

She was at the Iron-splinter mine.

Jake’s lifeless body fell before her feet.

Faye gasped for air. She felt as if she was being choked. Clutching her neck with both hands, Faye ran to get the pills out of her handbag. Tripping over her legs several times, she finally succeeded. Roughly shoving the pills into her mouth, Faye gulped down the water, spilling almost half of it.

Minutes later, which felt like years, Faye could finally breathe.

Faye calmly raised herself to her feet. Her body was damp in a cold sweat. Sighing, Faye walked to the bathroom.

***

Sleep and Kyle did not seem to know each other these days. He finally stood up after spending who knows how long just lying on the bed.

5:40 a.m.

Exhaling aloud, Kyle rubbed his tired eyes. After gulping down a glass of water, he sat down again. Soon, Kyle was lost in thoughts.

Jake…

Three years ago, when they finally got a hold of him, Jake escaped yet again. But they succeeded in finding his weakness.

The mysterious woman who worked together with Jake.

They found this through a public video uploaded by Lily Donfort. The first speculation was that they were partners or she was his underling.

This was soon proved wrong as Faye Evans had no initial connection to Jake. By the time they moved to investigate Faye, the incident at the Iron-splinter mine had already happened. Unfortunately, they were too late.

They should’ve targeted Faye Evans from the beginning.

Soon, Jake cut off his every relation with everyone in Duskwood as well as with Faye. With such circumstances, they lost the chance to seize him once again.

The relationship between Faye and Jake could not be cleared as well.

However, there was one thing out of the ordinary. Jake protected Faye’s phone for the past three years. Like a maniac.

Thus, their focus turned towards Faye once again. By collecting information through the phones of those around her, they could find their relationship.

Lovers.

Jake? Love?

Honestly, those two words didn’t go together. The Jake Kyle knew was nothing of that sort. He was not in a position to object anyway. Kyle was almost forced for this task.

Impersonating Jake.

Kyle was chosen for the job for two reasons, the similarities in their overall appearances, and their relationship. Jake and Kyle were close friends once. That was before Jake betrayed them and turned his back. That was almost seven years ago.

Recently, many foreign governments seemed to show a surge of interest in Jake. This raised the urgency to seize him as soon as possible.

Honestly, dragging an ordinary citizen to this matter was their last resort.

It’s too late to worry now anyway.

Either way, Faye Evans was an interesting person. Her dark emerald eyes seemed to have an immense depth. She held a tragic past from her parents' death, grew up in an orphanage, and managed to get accepted to a prestige university and even a decent job. The only thing that connected her to Jake was Duskwood. But other than that, there was nothing out of the ordinary in her life.

That means Jake is connected to Duskwood… Somehow.

But how?

The only one he could gain those answers from was Faye. If only he could get a hold of her phone, he could gain all the answers he needed.

She didn’t let go of her phone for a second.

A vibrating noise jerked him back to reality. Kyle dragged himself to unlock the phone.

-Faye Evans is at Duskwood.

Duskwood? At this time?

Chapter 7 - Silent grief

Freezing water brought her senses back. Faye stared into her image in the mirror. Exhaling, she dragged herself out, roughly pulling out an oversized T-shirt from the closet. Lighting up the screen of her phone, Faye gulped down another glass of water. The dry feeling in her throat did not seem to leave no matter how much water she drank.

3:22 a.m.

Noticing a text, Faye unlocked the phone while sitting on the bed.

Jessy - Faye! You’re coming tomorrow, right? 😄

- You promised!

-Our shopping date! Yay!😍

-Why are you not reading?🙁

-Don’t tell me something urgent came up again😑

Faye sighed aloud. At this point what she needed was not a shopping date but some strong liquor. Strong enough for her to pass out.

Grabbing her phone in both hands, Faye typed.

-Shall we have some fun at Aurora instead?

Jessy won’t reply at this time. After waiting motionlessly for a few minutes, her fingers moved again.

-Never mind. I’ll go there.

-See you soon, Jessy.

Yanking the closet door, she pulled out a few pairs of tops and trousers as well as a black dress. Shoving them inside her backpack, Faye looked around in case she missed something.

Fortunately or unfortunately, Duskwood was not far from her place. She could arrive there within three hours at most. Considering the time, it would probably take less than two hours if she left right away.

Faye wanted to grab a taxi. Yet she was not courageous enough to. Sitting in the back seat would give her a panic attack for sure.

It’s okay. It’s not like I’m in a hurry.

She calmly got into the bus; sat down in a window seat. Faye stared at the passing buildings in a daze. None of the scenes outside seemed to capture her attention. Honestly, Faye was trembling; distressed.

She had to check.

Check that Jake wasn’t at the Grim Rock waterfall, where he was killed in her dream.

How foolish.

It happened years ago.

I didn’t go to him when I was needed anyway.

Faye gasped, taking note of her inner voice. Her heart seemed to beat so fast and powerful, that she expected it to burst in the nearing second. Faye gulped, trying to clear the burning, dry throat. Hastily grabbing the water bottle out of her backpack, she gulped down the water as well.

None of it worked.

What her inner mind said…

You didn’t go to him when he needed you! How dare you act all pitiful now?

Biting her trembling lips hard, Faye tried to breathe deeper.

You always do that, Faye…

Why are you the one in pain?

When they all died because of you!

Gasping for air, she clutched her neck, scratching it painfully. A nearby passenger asked her if she was okay, which led her to gather herself up again.

Fortunately, the next stop was where she wanted to get down. As soon as she got off the bus, Faye walked the fastest she could. Towards the Grim Rock waterfall; then the Iron-Splinter mine.

The chilly wind scratched her dry skin painfully.

Your mother, father.

Jake as well.

They all died instead of you!

They died because of you, Faye…

You KILLED them, FAYE!

Unconsciously, screaming sharply, Faye dropped to her knees. Clutching her hair tightly, she screamed. If it wasn’t a deserted forest area, people would’ve come running to her.

But now that she was inside the Duskwood forest, nobody could hear her.

Faye sobbed out loud.

Louder than she ever did.

***

“What do you mean Faye went to Duskwood?”

[“It’s just as I said. Faye Evans arrived at Duskwood a little while ago. She is in the forest, to be exact.”]

“What? Why would she go to the forest at this hour?”

[“I’m not sure if I am supposed to know that.”]

Clenching his jaw, Kyle contemplated. He met up with Faye pretending to be Jake yesterday. And now she suddenly went to Duskwood?

What did I miss?

Maybe Jake was in contact with her after all.

I can’t leave out that possibility yet.

Suddenly, a memory struck him, “Hey! If it’s the Duskwood forest…Is it the place where Jake was finally located?”

[“Let me see…Aha! Yes. She’s at the Grim Rock waterfall. There’s an opening to the mine from there.”]

Exhaling a deep sigh, Kyle cussed, “D*mn it! Sh*t! I have to go there! Right now!”

[“Then go!”]

“Shut the f*ck up! You don’t have to tell me what to do!”

Roughly shoving his phone in his pocket, Kyle grabbed his backpack which was lying on his bed. Soon, the door was shut with a loud noise.

***

The sound of the waterfall deafened her ears. Faye had looked down at the flowing waterfall continuously for hours by now.

What happened to Jake that day?

Did he really die?

Just like in her dream, did they kill him?

Faye kicked a stone to fall with an emotionless face. She could feel nothing at this point. Her entire mind and body were numb.

Sighing, she took out her phone.

Faye wanted to read their chat once more.

Once more before her end comes.

This time, however, it was another text which grabbed her attention.

Unknown- Faye! Where are you?

Is this guy really Jake?

Faye tapped on the keyboard with weak fingers, trembling from both the cold air as well as her mentality.

-Where did you want to take me out?

-Jake

-What food did you say you’d buy me?

There was no response. A weak scoff escaped her dried-up lips.

What did I expect?

Just as she was about to take the last step towards the steep, her phone vibrated.

-A Chinese restaurant.

-You said you like Chinese food.

Chapter 8 - A desperate outcry

His arms were scratched. Running through the forest ‘till he ran out of breath, Kyle bent down. Still gasping for air, he looked around again.

Faye was somewhere around this area. The tracking bug they placed in her bag indicated so. Though he failed to grab her phone, he made someone place that on her.

No matter how hard he looked, Faye was nowhere to be seen.

Why in the world?

A sudden thought stopped Kyle from taking another step. He stiffened, frowning.

Could this…be a trap, perhaps?

Sh*t! When did I become this careless?

Rubbing his temples, Kyle tried to be more alert. He was not trained for these situations, to be honest. Kyle felt as if being trapped between two walls. The walls would move and crush him to death, eventually.

He was nearing the Grimrock. The loud noise made his situation more vulnerable. Why didn’t he think of the possibility that Jake would attack him? Irritated at the sound of the falling water, Kyle clicked his tongue. His lips letting out a cuss under his breath, Kyle looked up.

His knees seemed to have turned jelly.

What the hell?!

Kyle climbed the hill at once, not caring about breathing difficulties. He was scared. His body trembling, Kyle was unable to call out to Faye.

If he called her name, she would jump.

***

“M-mom?”

The woman turned her head. The long, black hair ruffled and randomly cut, the messed up make-up with cheeks stained in black along with the tears. The bright red dress was crumpled and now was oversized as the woman kept starving herself for days.

This was no alien scenery for him. What panicked him was where she was standing.

Kyle who just arrived home from middle school, looked around to find his mother. He preferred not to greet her but it would be even more bothersome if she finds him later.

“You ungrateful brat! You are just like your father!”

Or she would have another episode.

“You monster! Give me my family back! My husband! My son! Give them back!”

“I’m going to kill you!”

“Monster! I have to dig those eyes out!”

Such words didn’t manage to bring out an ounce of emotions from him by now. He had heard them forever.

A mother who’d call the child she gave birth to, “a monster” while asking for that very son. A father who left him with a mentally ill woman. Kyle knew that his father didn’t want to cope with his mother. She would look for him while in his embrace. Additionally, Kyle’s father had several women; it was easy for him to walk out with one of them.

A few years ago, that woman tried to dig out his eyes again. She cuffed his hands, grabbing the kitchen knife. The five-year-old Kyle could do nothing, but the thirteen-year-old Kyle could. He pushed her hard, forcefully as he could. The woman hit her head on the floor and fainted.

Confirming she was still breathing; Kyle left that hell. He wandered in the streets and sometimes would pickpocket. Sometimes got hit by gangs, and sometimes were ordered to work for them. Either way, his priority was filling his empty stomach.

That did not last long though. He was caught by the police and was sent to his mother again. The same thing happened several times. The woman who wanted to kill him, would belatedly come back to her senses and report to the police. Then he would be dragged home again.

Honestly, he wanted to tell the authorities about the abuse he went through. But his mother’s pleading face won’t let him. He was putting himself in hell, again and again.

He genuinely believed that he deserved all that hurt and pain.

Kyle was born to burn in that hell.

That same woman was now…

Standing on the railing at the balcony. The balcony of the 31st floor.

His body froze. A faint voice left his mouth, “Mom? Why?”

The woman only stared at him. She stared into his eyes, the eyes she hated so much. Then she burst into laughter. Laughing hysterically, her thin body waved giving him a heart attack.

Suddenly, she stopped. Then smiled sweetly.

Whenever she did so, the blood left his face.

“Monster…Are you happy now?”

Kyle could only stare. To call out to the emergency service and ask for help was nowhere near his now blank head.

“I curse you, the monster that ruined my family. You will never be happy, Kyle. Until the day you die.”

With the last of her words, the woman let her body fall. Her body was crushed in the middle of a pool of blood.

***

A gentle movement from Faye jerked him back to reality.

Faye slowly turned around. His mind went blank, body stiffening.

What if she jumps when she sees me?

Kyle wanted to hide. But his feet were fixed. Faye looked right through him. She didn’t seem to have noticed him at all. Clutching her phone, Faye slowly stepped out of the hill.

As she was about ten feet away from him, Faye fell to the floor. Kyle ran towards her at once.

Out of impulse, he grabbed her shaking body to his chest, hugging her tightly.

***

Ah…

He came to save me after all…

Jake.

I missed you so much…

Faye decided, at that moment.

She would never run away from that feeling again.

I...still love you, Jake.

I love you.

Okay here I am continuing this story since forever -_-

In case you've already forgotten what this story is about, I'll give you a little summary T-T

Jake & Oshi(mc) are reunited exactly one year later, on the day of the Pine Glade Festival.

Oshi learns that Jake has made a deal with the FBI & now is working with them.

Jake is introduced to the group at the Aurora.

Jake asks if she would like to move in with him, of course Oshi says yes!

Before leaving Duskwood, they go to see Richy, who is still in the hospital. Richy will soon get his sentence.

Chapter 12 - Moving in

“I will let go of her. Now that I saw you, I’m sure it won’t be in vain.”

Surprise was evident in the pair of blue irises as Jake heard Phil’s confession. Of course he would be. Even he himself was.

Phil chuckled, “Don’t worry. I can bet this bar itself that Oshi has no clue.”

Oshi was indeed a smart girl. She was good at reading people as well. But she never seemed to consider the possibility of someone being interested in her, romantically. He would say she was being too humble.

A little smile appeared on Jake’s face, “She really doesn’t know. And I don’t think she would ever know, unless you tell her yourself that is.”

“Then she would never know.” Phil gulped down the last of the cocktail, “I am content being good friends with her you know. But of course, if she ever turn to me, I wouldn’t hesitate. So take good care of her.”

“Such a thing would never happen.”

.....

Phil chuckled softly, remembering the little conversation he had last week.

Oshi and Jake were moving in together today it seemed. They were progressing rather quickly. Oshi really was quite reckless and daring at times.

Was getting over this woman even possible?

***

Jessy- Oshi, when are you moving in?

Oshi - We are already on the way.

Jessy- The furniture and other things?

Oshi- Hired professionals of course.😊

Jessy- Did you go see your parents? Last time you only called them right?

- How did it go?🤩

Oshi- Yeah. We went there yesterday.

- Jake was really nervous! You had to see him!😂

- My parents really liked him!

Jessy- Congratulations on both😍 Tell Jake I wished him too.

Oshi- Thanks Jessy😄 I’ll tell him.

“Jessy told me to congratulate you.”

Jake turned his head a little, still focusing on the road. “For what?”

“For moving on. And…for getting thumbs up from my parents?”

His lips curved up, causing her heart to skip a beat. “Tell Jessica, I thanked her.”

“Right! I was gonna ask you. Why do you call her Jessica?”

He tilted his head as if to ask what’s the problem with that, “Obviously, because that’s her name.”

“But we all call her Jessy.”

“Um...We were never close enough to go on a nick name basis.”

Oshi chuckled to his serious answer, “Ha ha! Yeah, it’s true, indeed. But that makes her feel awkward. So just call her Jessy.” She added, “Do you know what she feels when you call her ‘Jessica’? That you’re expressing your dislike towards her.”

He turned his head abruptly, surprised. “What? No. I never disliked Jessica. I never had any reason to. If anything, she helped us a lot by being on our side every time.”

“I know that. But others don’t know you that well.”

“It’s fine as long as you know.”

“No. It’s not. And I don’t want Jessy to get hurt. So call her Jessy from now on.”

“Alright. If you want me to. It’s not even that hard.”

“Right?”

“Yes. But I should say, I’ve noticed that you’re especially considerate of her.”

“Of course! Is there anyone who can dislike Jessy? Um..how to say it?” She continued, turning to his side excitedly, “Jessy is like a cute little puppy you can’t help but love. She awakens my protective instincts.”

Jake chuckled, looking at her excited face, amusement not hidden in his voice, “I see. Then I shall definitely use the nickname to call her, so that you won’t be upset.”

Surprisingly, Jake tend to play around with her time to time, on the contrary to her prior impressions. Her heart ached thinking how sad his life had been so far for him to have habitually concealed his playful nature. Ironically, she even felt proud that it was her, who could bring out the ludic boy in him.

“Oh? Wait this!”

“What is it?”

She held the phone in front for him when he stopped due to the traffic. The news article went on,

Emily Hudson’s tragic death. Who is the perpetrator?

Emily Hudson, a twenty five years old female office worker was reported missing on Saturday morning by Bill Roberts, the fiance. The police of Q city immediately dispatched several search parties only to find her handbag and a pair of heels dumped in a garbage pit. Emily had been missing for nearly a week, until Yesterday night, around 11pm, a homeless person had found a dead body behind the H&C department store car park and reported it to the police. The identity of the dead woman was found to be the missing girl, Emily Hudson. The cause of death is to be revealed after the autopsy. As of the culprit behind this brutal kidnapping and murder is yet to be found. Not to mention, this was the second murder happened in the same area in a span of one week.

“My apartment is also behind the H&C. The rent is cheap there and it’s near the university so many students live in that apartment complex. Not to mention many office workers who work in the area.”

Jake frowned, before focusing on the road again, “The alley behind the H&Q is the road that leads to the apartment complex. It is well lit and all the CCTV cameras are working, there was no possibility someone could drop a corpse there without noticing.”

Oshi blinked, confused and surprised, “How would you know all that?”

He answered nonchalantly, “Of course I looked into it. You lived there after all. I had to check if it was safe enough.”

Bewildered, Oshi stared at him for a moment before asking, “Safe enough?”

“I checked it for the first time because of the man without a face. For my peace of mind, I usually checked it at least once a week.” Then turning to her with a serious face, he added, “Oshi, I promise I did not look into your phone or computer at least once after the case was solved, neither did I looked into your personal life. I do not want you to think of me as a creepy person.”

As she continued to keep silent, he went on, hesitantly, “I only looked into your workplace and your home. I had to make sure you were not in danger by any means.”

She was dumbfounded. To be honest she didn’t know if she was supposed to be angry for looking into her work without permission, or praise him for trying his best not to pry too much into her life. After all, she told him a lot about her workplace and the day to day life via texts.

In the end she decided to let it slide for once.

“Well. I would be moving out anyway. I’d let it slide this once, but don’t do it again. Okay?”

He nodded. “I promise I won’t. Unless it’s an emergency, that is.” to which she chuckled.

A person cannot be changed that easily after all.

Chapter 3

I was a tad late in arriving at the square, where I am supposed to pick MC up. I am surprised to see that she’s still not here, for MC was always precise on time. I still decide to wait for a little, for I have heard that women take much longer for dressing up.

It may take her more time today, for today is our first anniversary. I have made quite the effort as well, I am wearing these fancy clothes today. I prefer dark clothes on a usual day since it helps me conceal my presence. But for this day, for the love of my life, I have dressed in this navy blue coat, a light blue waistcoat donned with silver thread along with matching breeches. I am to swear to god, I would never have worn such a fancy dress, never in a million years, if it was not for this woman.

I tap my cane on the ground repeatedly, as I grow uneasy with the passing minutes. No matter how important of a day today is, MC being this tardy was unusual. I turn to signal Luke, a boy in my information guild, to get closer.

Luke is a boy, age around fifteen, who gathers hints at the square. The shop owners around have good relationships with the boy, who takes note of the little gossip they blabber. If a wealthy man is drifting from his usual path for a moment, a dignified woman seems to have a dirty affair with a new rising businessman and the list goes on.

I am the leader of the country’s largest information guild, I have thousands of men and women working under me. People would say we collect and hide secrets, but that is not all for it, I swear.

This is the truth that I have been hiding from her for such a long time.

That day, two years ago, when I saw you at a flower shop…You who were arguing with your fiance for your favourite flower gave off such a unique aura. Forgive me for not having known your name, for you are such a brave, truly dignified, wise woman.

From that moment to this day, I have always worked hard to have you, to make you my woman. Even hiding who I am and what I do for a living. Still, I couldn’t bring myself to lie about my name, so I revealed my real name to you, only for you. I have never been grateful that I did not choose to use a pseudonym for myself. Even so, since you are a smart woman, you realized I was quite enigmatic, early on.

This truth I intend to hide from you for another day, another day, one more day.

Even if I am to lie in front of the god himself, I’d do anything to hide it from you.

When I said I’d tell you when the right time comes…

Forgive me for having no such time.

There is no right day for you to know the truth. For your safety and my greed, you shall never learn anything. I intend to deceive you till death makes us apart.

I ask in a quiet voice, almost a whisper, “Did MC not arrive yet?”

The chestnut-haired lad ruffles his hair, perplexed. “What? The lady never arrived here.”

I frown. Depending on the circumstances, I’d have dragged him by the collar. “What do you mean never arrived?”

“Did you not change the rendezvous?”

Pray to tell, what the hell is this guy blabbering on? “What nonsense are you talking about? Have I done such an inconvenient thing ever?!”

Blinking, Luke states, “I know right? I told him that leader wouldn’t do so, but Mark said to mind my business.” Now shrugging, he continued. “The lady got on a carriage and asked to drop her at the fair.”

“Fair?”

Something is off.

“Who informed her of the changed rendezvous?”

Luke tilted his head, “Hm? The new guy did. The guy leader introduced to the lady the other day, one that came from a countryside branch. She had dropped the bracelet, the one leader gifted her. He gave it and said you told him to give it.”

“...Rogers?”

“Yes.” Nodding, Luke confirmed.

Just what is that guy plotting?

Richy Rogers.

That man was hired only to work for the face of the guild, which was a trading business to the oblivious. This man was never let inside the guild even though it has been nearly three years since he joined.

My hunch was right in the end.

For some reason, I couldn’t bring myself to trust that guy. I should’ve snapped his head the moment he appeared in front of me.

A spy. Let’s see where this is going…

But first, MC was the priority.

“Send a pigeon. Let everyone know, Richy Rogers and MC. If one of them is located, they’d receive ten-thousand pounds. Anything unusual as well. Each will gain ten thousand if they’re to work in a group, so no need for competition.” I stop a little, contemplating. “Rogers has to be found with his life intact, doesn’t matter how beaten as long as his mouth works. MC, of course, shouldn’t be touched. Anyone who did, will not see the sun another day, whether they work under me or not.”

“Understood.”

The lad swiftly disappeared among the crowd. I am headed to the fair first.

I wanted to hide this from you…forever. Even if I had to blind you, put you in a cage, I wanted to hide the truth from you…

Who knew this is how things would proceed? I was careless.

I am burning with rage. For every soul involved in this, I shall show them what living hell means.

-To be Continued.

Owkay, but I had to drag Richy in somehow >< He didn't suffer enough. He should suffer more, at least in this au...

Chapter 13 - Our new home :)

Previous Chapter - Next chapter

***

Their new home was a neat apartment on the seventh floor in a complex of fifteen stories. Not to say, expensive. Jake really must be earning a lot, she thought as she looked around. The packages were all around the living room. The apartment consisted of three bedrooms, two bathrooms, the kitchen and the dining area other than the living room. The gym and the swimming pool was accessible for the residents, and there was also a park. The name of the complex was ‘Eden’, whereas she thought the name did it’s job.

Now it was up to them to arrange everything.

Noticing his study desk and the computer, she pointed a finger, turning to him. “Don’t put that in the study.”

He blinked, confused, “Why?”

“You’d spend most of the day there, not to mention you don’t even sleep for that long.” This was her biggest fear when she heard he’d be forking from home mostly, unless he’s required to be at a particular place.

“Where am I supposed to work then?”

“Bedroom. It’s spacious enough. Isn’t it?”

He scratched the back of his head, befuddled, “Well, it is. But why?”

“Otherwise I won’t be able to see you. I can’t just barge into your study, but I definitely can, into the bedroom. I won’t make a sound, I promise. Hm?”

His lips curved up, “It’s fine. Let’s do that.”

She grinned, akin to a child, hanging onto his arm, “Thanks! But we can keep the study, of course. I will also need it time to time.” As he nodded a thought crossed her mind.

Jake always let her have her way. But was he really comfortable with that? Or was he putting up with her requests?

“Actually I have trouble focusing on anywhere. That’s why I need the study to be efficient. Jake?”

“Yes?”

“Do you also have such problems?”

She was not sure. Especially because she did not know what sort of work he did. He did not tell her. She did not ask him. As if an unspoken rule existed between them. She assumed two reasons for this, either he was prohibited to talk about his work outside or he would put her in some sort of danger if he did tell her. Either way, she was sure that Jake did not love his job. He was doing this so they could be together. And she was guilty for it.

He shook his head, looking ahead. “No. In fact, for the past years I had to work under extreme conditions like really noisy or cramped places at times. Thus, I’m fine with anywhere.”

“I see. Alright, then.”

Just what kind of a life did he live until now? She could only leave it to her imagination. For some reason, Jake doesn’t seem to want to talk about his past. Thus, she did not want to pry into it anymore.

While she was deep in such thoughts, Jake snaked his arms round her neck from behind. Oshi looked back, surprised. He simply smiled, pointing something with his chin. She looked at her neck and gasped.

A silver necklace was around her neck! The pendant was…

One blue iris…

“I learned that Iris flower means hope. I actually made this while I was clearing my name.” Scratching the back of his neck, Jake avoided her eyes. “Because you’re m hope…I thought it’d match you. I hope you like it.” With a hint of a red hue on his cheeks, he looked adorably nervous.

Honestly. How could I not like this?

That day, a piece of his enormous was gifted for her to keep.

***

“Jake, should we hold a housewarming party?”

They had finally managed to arrange everything orderly in their new home and now, were lying on their cozy bed, together.

“Hm? Okay.”

“Do you have anyone you want to invite? Other than Hannah and Lily, I mean.”

She was curious. Jake must have at least had a few friends before he had to hide, or so she thought. After all, Jake wasn’t as antisocial as he pretended to be.

Contrary to her thoughts, he shook his head. “Not really.”

“Really?” He nodded again, confirming. Maybe he felt detached to his old friends, she thought.

Oshi, herself could relate to it. She herself had only a very small circle of friends. Jake was even more reserved than her, so of course he wouldn’t open up to anyone that easily.

“Okay then. We can invite our friends from Duskwood, and two of my closest friends. Is that fine with you?” He only nodded, thus she continued, “When should we hold it?”

“Next weekend?”

“Yeah! I’ll invite them right away!” She jumped up, akin to an excited child, a chuckle escaping his mouth as he watched her.

She had a very mysterious, at times a confusing personality. She would spend hours without a word yet become so talkative that she would talk to him for an entire night. She would not look for him for hours yet would refuse to leave his cuddle at times. Albeit openly showing off her affection, at times making him embarrassed, she would get very shy the next moment.

To Jake, Oshi was like a puzzle. A perplexing one at that. It would take him a lifetime to solve, yet he was sure he would never get bored of it.

Every time he witnessed a new side of his beloved, he would feel very proud of himself.

He never knew human affection could be so lovely, heartwarming and pure.

It was the first time.

Someone loved him without expecting anything in return.

Without ever trying to change him into something else.

Someone who wholeheartedly accepted him, without a single complain.

She was such a great woman.

And he did not deserve her.

Yet he could never let go of her.

For her, this house will be their home. But for him, she was his home.

***

“Oshi! The house is really great!”

“I know right!”

Sarah was looking around the apartment with Noah and Oshi.

Sarah Edevane and Noah Walker were her beloved friends. Oshi’s friendship with Sarah run to their high school days while Noah joined them in the university. Noah was also her colleague, though they work in different departments.

Sarah was an optimistic young lady, who reminded her of Jessy. Bright blond hair and amber eyes, Sarah was, akin to a little sun. Including her personality. While Noah, an ebony haired guy who possessed bluish gray eyes, was a happy go lucky lad who immediately clicked with her on the first time they met.

Jake had heard so much about these people in the past few days. Oshi was especially close with the duo than with her other friends and colleagues. As always, it was quite unpredictable. The three friends had completely different personalities, yet they somehow blended well. Maybe that was her charm.

The bell rang, Jake stepped up not to disturb his beloved, who was having fun with her pals. They were expecting their friends from Duskwood, yet two completely unexpected people stood at the doorstep.

Chapter 13

Just as I am about to storm out, a beggar blocks my path. No. The way he stares directly into my eyes, despite wearing rags and being covered in dirt, how his dark eyes are still carrying a fighting spirit…I can tell at a glance. This is no ordinary beggar.

"Tony?" Phil comes forth, his voice evident of surprise and confusion. "Who?" I ask. Even though I want to kick the lad and leave, my gut feeling tells me to stay. "He belongs to the whispers." Passing by me, Phil stands before the boy. " What brings you here at this time?"

Tony gulps. I sneer at my heart. The boy who dared to block my path moments ago is showing off his nervousness. "...T-the lady! We found the lady!"

"What?!" I grab him by the neck, baring my teeth. I tried so hard to keep up my sanity, not to take my anger out on the wrong person. But why is this guy not talking properly? “What do you mean? Lady? Where?!-”

“Whoa! Whoa! Now, now. Don’t break his neck and let him speak.” Phil stealthily managed to loosen my grasp on the boy’s neck. I take a hard, deep breath. “…Speak.”

Phil is right. I need to be calm and calculating more than at any other time right now.

“A-at the tavern. We managed to get her inside Charlotte’s room for now.” The boy stutters, trembling in fear and panic. Without bothering to hear, I leave. At this point, I don’t care if it’s a trap or not. If there is a chance…a one-in-a-million chance for me to find her, I will risk everything.

***

Where am I?

Hear a lot of voices from a distance. My sight is a blur, my head is spinning. I was kidnapped and tortured. But who was it, I can’t remember. I feel as if I’ve met them before, but where I cannot recall. I blink hard. Maybe they have taken me somewhere so they can torture me more.

What’s the point of living at this point?

Why did I even bother to hold on for so long?

How long have I been held captive?

I cannot recall…

He had blue eyes…

Black hair…

Ah…I give up.

I feel a warm sensation around me. Is it a hand? Are they going to touch me again? I wriggle, trying to get away. It seems my body is yet to give up the futile resistance.

But this time, I hear a woman’s tender voice from above my head. “Sh…It’s alright, my lady. Everything is okay now.” This is the first time I find a woman around in how long I recall. I open my heavy eyelids. A blond hair covers my eyes, and as I try to straighten up, a pair of grey eyes appear before me. “Are you up now, lady?”

My dry lips move, a voice faint enough to escape even to my ears. “…Who?”

With the word leaving my mouth, the door slams open. Oh! This is the first time I’m noticing that we are in a small bedroom. I am lying on a tiny bed with a hard mattress. The stranger woman is sitting next to me, another blond-haired woman is standing by the bed.

Through the open door, a man walks in. Even the sight of the man caused me to flinch.

Deep blue eyes…

Dark black hair…

A deep voice…

“MC! MC!” Sturdy hands wrapping around my body. I have no strength to neither shove him away nor accept his embrace. I can sense my heart calming down, relief washing over me. I hear the deep voice over my head, “I’m sorry I was late, my love.”

The voice rang once more, much lower and quieter, “Take her and treat her well. She’s our guest and a prisoner, for now.”

Is he talking about me?

Where am I going to be dragged this time?

Instead, the woman who was holding me a moment ago is taken away. As soon as she leaves the room, the hands around me strengthen their grasp. I feel sleep rushing through me…

“...Jake,” I mumble something. What is it that I am saying? I was not planning to say anything though…

Because it’s no use. Whatever I ask, they would only hear what they want to hear.

“Yes, it’s me. I’m sorry, MC. I’m sorry I’m late…”

Why is this man apologizing? He looks so familiar too…

Who is he…?

Blue eyes, black hair…

Wait.

Blue eyes, black hair?

Unknown energy rushes to my body, giving me strength. I shove away the man as hard as I can.

How could I forget?

He is the man behind all!

“Go away! Go away, you demon!” I scream, clutching my hair.

***

The doctor sighed as soon as he left the room. MC suddenly started screaming and fainting. For now, I have brought her into my mansion, in my bedroom. I dare say, she is now in the safest place in the capital. Nobody can touch her here.

“Why was she like that?” I ask, nervously. “It seems to be a defence mechanism.” The doctor sighed again, beckoning me to walk a little further away from the room. “I have seen a similar case before. A woman was raped by her neighbour continuously for half a day. The evidence was pointing towards that man, but the woman kept insisting that the man who raped her was her fiance.”

I feel my brows frowning, I cannot seem to manage my expression well at the moment. “What?”

“The woman’s fiance had a strong alibi. He was at the academy, taking an exam at that time. A clear alibi, with so many witnesses.”

“Then why?”

“The woman was traumatized. She unconsciously pushed away the memory of her rapist and replaced it with her fiance.”

“...Because the memory was too terrifying?” I feel my heart sink.

The doctor nods quietly, “Sir William, it seems the lady’s traumatized and her memory is confused. She had been drugged several times as well. There is evidence of physical torture and rape…” Sighing for the hundredth time, the doctor mumbles. “You should be grateful that she’s still alive after all this. Any human is bound to break after going through that. Especially for a lady who has mostly walked in a flowery path.” The doctor, Wilhelm, who has been working under him, was one of the few who knew my real identity. He looks around, cautiously.

“Remember this Jake. You should resent yourself for this. An innocent girl was taught what hell is, all because you couldn’t hold your greed.” Wilhelm hissed, turning away, not before murmuring in a voice full of contempt. “Her consciousness goes back and forth. She may cling to you and kick you out in a moment. Deal with her patiently.”

He is right. I feel my heart heavier than ever. Wilhelm warned me of this, even before I made an advance on MC.

“Jake. Don’t tell me that I didn’t warn you later. Leave that lady alone. You will only make her suffer by dragging her into our world.”

I exhale hard as I look at the tiny figure laying lifelessly on the large bed. Maybe the size of the bed is making her appear even smaller.

How beautiful her smile was, how lively her eyes sparkled, how enthusiastic her personality was…

I’m the one who ruined it all…

I recall the words of the woman who had apparently saved her. Amy Bell Lewis is her name.

“How did you take her away without anyone noticing?”

The woman shrugged, “I’m in charge of cooking. I simply drugged the food.”

“Why go to such lengths?”

She sighed, wiping away the corner of her right eye. “Even for me, as a prostitute, that was too much. I can only imagine how miserable the lady must have been. That bastard, Richy is a beast, no human!”

Jake clenched his jaw, “What do you know about the commander?”

“Nothing. He comes and goes. He has blue eyes and black hair,” A corner of her overly painted red lips crept up, “Much similar to yours, kind sir.”

I sigh, massaging my temples. That woman gives me a chill in the spine. An eerie vibe is what she gives off. She’s either a good actress or a seductive slut.

***

The room is nice.

The woman hums, sitting on the bed at the centre of the room. Her blond hair, flowing down her shoulders, lays on the bed. Just recalling the moments she spent with the commander, is enough to die for him.

If it’s for him, I’ll do everything.

Even if it’s helping him to get together with another bitch.

Amidst such thoughts, she remembered.

“What do you mean to let her go?”

Amy gently massaged his sturdy shoulders. The grazing of the ebony hair, just having his masculine fragrance tickling her nose is enough to climax. “Commander, you don’t understand your own heart, do you?” Gently kneeling before him, she took his large hand in hers. “You want that woman. Commander, you yearn for that woman, you want to hold her, don’t you?” Taking his hand, she rubbed her cheek into his palm.”If you keep letting that bastard Richy shove his filthy dick in her like this, she’ll come to hate you.”

At her words, he flinched. Of course, no one would’ve noticed.

‘No one but me.’

She, who has loved him for so long, would notice. Even if he would never let her sleep with him, it doesn’t matter. As long as she can see him and touch him like now, that’s all that matters.

“I’ll save the woman and take her to that man. I’ll slowly earn his trust and make conflict between the two. That way, the lady will become yours and that man will face ruins. Two birds from one stone.”

He sneered, “How confident you look.” At the clear insult, she beamed. Of course, he would never admit it. But he thinks that woman is the noblest, prettiest woman in the world. Compared to her, Amy was just a worm crawling on the dirt.

Well, not that it matters.

“I am confident. But commander, I have a favour to ask you.” She said, coyly playing with his thick, long fingers. His brow rose, “Favor? It’s not like you to ask me for anything?”

“If everything goes well, no. After you destroy Jake and make that lady yours…will you embrace me once? Just once? I’ll ask for no more.” As she asked with pleading eyes, the man took his time answering.

“...I’ll think about it.”

It makes me uncomfortable

"mc, please stop this."

"Stop what?"

"Don't you think you are kind of being flirty? Especially when I gave you my answer already ?"

'That's because I never stopped trying to get closer to you...'

"Honestly I feel uncomfortable when you do that. We have been acting like nothing happened all this time so you should not bring those kinds of topics, right?"

'That's...No matter how much I thought we can stay as just friends... I can't seem to stop loving you...'

"Please don't be angry or upset. But it's hard to stay in the friend zone when you act like that."

'I just can't stop loving you, Jake...'

I smile, as gently and carefree as possible.

"I see. I guess my jokes went too far. I'm sorry. It won't happen again."

'God, please don't let the tears flow...'

"Thanks for telling me, Jake."

So I turn back. As above all, I don't want you to be uncomfortable.

I love you enough to see you falling in love with her...

Like just imagine awkward shy flustered MC and Jake on their first date, neither of them being used to speaking to each other face to face rather than over the phone. Meanwhile MC’s phone keeps going off from all the messages the Duskwood gang are sending them to the point where MC is slightly concerned something has happened to one of the other members of the group.

But when MC checks their messages, it’s all just the group teasing them and Jake for being so shy and flustered with each other. MC is slightly confused at how the group know how their date is going until they look across the room and sees the Duskwood gang all sitting at a table in bad disguises.

Which of course leads to the Duskwood gang crashing MC and Jake’s date so they can embarrass and tease them further.

Tbh this is mostly just me projecting my need for more Jake x MC fluff along with the Duskwood gang teasing and embarrassing both of them.
