Everything About It - Tumblr Posts

This post is excellent.

I have literally nothing of value to add to the post aside from a personal anecdote, and while those are usually reserved for tags, this is too long for that, and I don’t wanna clutter my tags.

Important backstory - I’m not into Marvel, like, at all. I’ve watched the iron man movies, the hulk movies, and some of the avengers movies, but I never adored them, and I *especially* wasn’t into spiderman. He just wasn’t my kinda superhero. When ITSV came out, I considered watching it for the pretty animation, but it was spiderman, and I don’t know spiderman, so I skipped it. But then when ATSV was coming out, I heard that spiderpunk was going to be in it. And while I didn’t know anything about spiderman, I *loved* spiderpunk, so I literally watched ITSV and ATSV just for him.

Also, I consider myself a baby punk. I’m more philosophically/politically inclined punk than musically, but I can’t do everything all at once. I’m slowly getting there though!

When Hobie appeared on screen for the first time, and he said his punk quips, I can’t lie, I was extremely put off. My non-punk friends loved him, but I found him too... showy. Too “stereotypical”, and too “out-there” with his ideals. To me, all of his ideas, everything he said, was a given. The moment I knew he was punk, I assumed all of the ideals he presented would be his ideals, and that they would explain his behavior. So when he started outright stating punk ideals, I felt like spiderpunk was an attempt by a big corporation to try and be “politically correct” with an ideology that has been touted as being extremist many times.

But the more I watched, I picked up the subtle community/brotherhood-driven behaviors of his. I clocked it immediately, and I really appreciated it. I loved how he didn’t outright state his community-minded ideas, and he didn’t make a big show out of it. Eventually, most of his quips became more similar to the way *I* talk, or the ways I’ve heard other punk (or just alt for that matter!) people talk. So I excused the first half that put me off and allowed myself to adore Hobie.

And then this post came in. This post perfectly explains this behavior, in conjunction with the plot, without trivializing any concern, and while making total narrative sense. I originally thought that Hobie might be playing up the punk lifestyle, but I couldn’t rationalize why. But after this post, it makes total sense. I can see all of this be intentional very easily, and I find it difficult to see how this could now be accidental.

Again, excellent post, OP.

Here’s the thing about Hobie

And I say this from a place of love.

Hobie is a dork.

Is he the coolest Spiderperson in the movie? Yes, by 1000%. Am I obsessed with him? Also 1000%. But he’s very, very Spider-dork.

Punk is an extremely flexible identity/philosopohy/belief system, and living it out is very different from being perceived as “punk.” To convince others you are “punk” you have to perform it effectively. Hobie’s world is a post capitalist hellscape, an anarchist dystopia, like the garbage strike in the 1970s that birthed punk in the first place, and he’s a punk because that’s an important and necessary way to be resiliant in his own universe.

But when he’s with the other spiders? He’s just playing. He’s funny. He’s inconsistant. He’s a goofball. He goes for obvious punchlines about Mayday. He’s just as much of a science nerd as any of them, but he lets them underestimate his scientific abilities so that he can rip shit off the wall and repurpose it while they all ignore the disruptor because that’s just Hobie, wrecking the place.

He realizes Miguel is dangerously full of rage before anyone else in HQ and as he watches what Miles goes through he is creating and evolving his escape plan. He uses the persona to convince everyone that he’s just obstinate and stupid, but his smart little spider mind is humming away under that fabulous head of hair, breaking everything down.

He’s also extremely community minded, which isn’t part of what outsiders see as punk but is absolutely what being an effective Spider is all about. (it’s also what real world punks are like but nvm.) Even though he seems like he’s not interested in being part of the squad, he shows up to help. He gives Gwen a place to crash (and i think it was platonically). His first words to Miles are advice to empower him (”use the whole hand”) because he’s the friendly neighbourhood Spider Man still. He’s got his cool jacket and his cool guitar and his cool hair and he uses all of those to hide. He watches all of them carefully and decides in advance who is worthy of his loyalty, and then he’s all in.

Like all the Spiders, he’s going to save everyone and he’s going to do both and he’s going to think of something no one has ever done before. Because that’s punk rock, bb.

Pairings: Eddie Munson x fem!reader

Warnings: Angst, enemies to lovers, slow burn, mentions of trauma

Summary: Eddie convinced himself that he hates the girl that took over his mind the moment he laid eyes on her. The girl that he saved without even knowing it.

-

His gaze was burning into your skin, making you shift in discomfort. He was on the other side of the room and yet he managed to make you uncomfortable, even from a distance.

Clenching your jaw, you put your sandwich down and lift your head to look at him, huffing in annoyance.

Sitting at his usual table, Eddie ignores the little banter between his friends, instead he looks at you with narrowed eyes, his gaze burns with hatred as he sizes you up from the other side of the room, he doesn’t turn away even when your eyes find his, he just continues to stare at you.

“I was born as someone named Jung Hoseok, this is how my mom gave birth to me.  I’ve been dancing since elementary school, I went for the audition, entered the label, and met these guys.  Then our debut was confirmed.  We got to perform, and get our first wins on music shows.  We went on to receive the Grand Prize Awards, and even received music awards abroad.  If you lay them all out, so many things have happened.  They’ve become important people whom I can’t forget in my life.” - Hoseok in Break the Silence: The Movie (cr. qdeoks)
