I always liked the idea of Gerry somehow knowing Gertrude's plan but not being able to tell Michael for whatever reason. Perhaps the eye in a sick joke granting him a vision of exactly what would happen when Michael and Gertrude arrived in Russia, but simply making it impossible for him to say it.
I imagine Gerry downright desperate, begging Michael not to follow Gertrude into this, but as we all know it...He trusted her.
And just one time. Just this once... Gerry wished he'd trusted him instead.
How unfortunate.

Headcanon that Gerry was a really picky eater when he was a kid and always put the parts of the food he didn't like on Eric's plate.
