In the woods at daytime, a man in a blue sweater and a man in a brown and white striped button-up, both wearing brown coats, look down and offscreen. There are two other men in the background, one taking photos of what the other men are looking at.
The man in the blue sweater turns to look at the man in the brown and white striped button-up, who continues to look sadly down and offscreen.
The man in the brown and white striped button-up turns to look at the man in the blue sweater, clearly upset.
The man in the blue sweater has his arm around the man in the brown and white striped button-up, pulling him in for a side-hug. They have both returned to looking down and offscreen.

this scene makes me need to lay down. goddddd.

sometimes i get the sense that reid is more attached to gideon than gideon is to reid. obviously they both serve as surrogates for the family member each is estranged from (gideon is estranged from his son and reid is estranged from his dad) but.

you know. reid clings to gideon, not physically but emotionally, and i think a lot of his wellbeing at the start of the series relies on gideon's presence. gideon almost certainly knows the most about reid out of anyone on the team—i don't think canon ever says that reid has told gideon about diana, but i would imagine he has—and i think reid feels understood by him in a way he doesn't by other people, even compared to the rest of the team who (mostly) try their best. i think he also tends to try to be as good and deserving as possible of gideon's presence, since he definitely at least partially feels like his father left because he wasn't good enough.

on the flipside, while gideon definitely sees reid as a son, he's...not the best dad. i think we see him repeating a lot of the mistakes that drove a wedge between him and stephen with reid, and i think that had mandy patinkin stayed on, we would have gotten a larger parallel there. he holds him at arms length, trying not to get too close, although he definitely cares about him more than he lets on and the mask slips sometimes, like this moment and on the plane after ldsk.

just noticed that gideon pronounces nevada as nev-AD-a in no way out and im choosing to believe he pronounced it as nev-AH-da until he met reid and nearly got murdered by him for pronouncing it WRONG!!!

Outdoors during the day, a man in a dark shirt cradles the face and head of a brunette laying on the ground, only part of his head visible. He is smiling. The subtitle at the bottom of the image reads: "It's okay."

having Thoughts about gideon comforting johnny mulford while he dies, mostly "why him?" neither of the mulfords are what i would consider to be among the ranks of the "sympathetic" unsubs, although johnny is definitely more sympathetic and they're not among the least sympathetic either—there's a definite "never had a chance" feeling about them both (particularly johnny)

it might just be that at the moment, all gideon is seeing is a kid who's afraid to die, because johnny is only twenty-two. i wonder a little bit if it's partially because there are some very slight similarities to reid. (both have abandonment issues, both had a severely mentally ill person as their primary caregiver, and johnny specifically shares some (again, very slight) physical similarities with reid. this is also only six episodes after gideon watched reid (temporarily) die and could do nothing about it, so maybe he's projecting reid onto somebody he can comfort. but i'll be honest im not super confident about that analysis lmao. i think it's largely just that johnny is super young and afraid and all gideon is seeing at the moment is a frightened kid, with his relationship with reid possibly contributing. regardless i just think it's an interesting action for gideon to take.

thinking about this line from gideon's letter:

Outdoors during the day, a woman walks down a residential street. The subtitle at the bottom of the image reads: "but I've realised I can't look at anyone, without seeing their death."

yes, he's speaking broadly here—immediately after we see this woman walking, it cuts to zoomed in images of bodies. that's obvious.

but i think he's also talking about reid, especially because the letter is addressed to him. reid, whose death he literally did see. he means "i cant look at strangers without picturing their death and that's why i cant do this job anymore" but he also means "i cant look at you without picturing you seizing on a filthy floor and thats why i cant work with you anymore"

words are futile devices

855 words

read on ao3

‘It was a hard couple of days, Spencer.’ Mostly, the team calls him Reid. Gideon has made himself the exception and that fact usually burrows and settles itself warmly in Spencer's heart. ‘How are you feeling?’

‘I’m fine,’ he responds, automatically, hearing his voice come out too soft, whilst the contrasting undercurrent of a string fit to snap strikes roughly unto his ears. ‘I just... it was intense.’

Gideon nods at this with consideration not befitting such a withholding answer. ‘Yes, it was. These murders, these... poor women, not knowing what to do. And it was hard cooperating with the police there at times, I found.’

Yes, Gideon had made that clear.

GAHHHH I PUBLISHED A FIC AND I AM SO NERVOUS ABT IT !!! ... gideon and reid have a very autism to autism communication moment where gideon tries to help reid along in their gender identity journey. in a roundabout way. in his way. so<33

the 3x2 au i said i was writing here is coming along angstily :) oh the irony

Spencer was starting to wonder if he’d tripped and fallen into a parallel universe, as unlikely as that was. Or, more likely, he was still asleep and dreaming. Except like most people, he couldn’t read in dreams, which meant this was reality. A very weird reality, where Strauss was on the case with them because Hotch had requested a transfer, and Emily was quitting the FBI entirely just as he was starting to get along with her again and Gideon was…somewhere.

He hoped he was okay, feared he wasn’t. Less than 40% of people hospitalized for strokes were younger than sixty-five, but fifty-two wasn’t impossible, and one of the most common cause of strokes was hypertension which could be caused by stress, and Gideon had certainly been stressed, and, and, and…

And Gideon knew how much it had hurt him when his father had left with a goodbye and a letter. He would never leave Spencer with nothing unless something was very, very wrong.
