EXCUSE ME???

The lyrics to the song:
Goodnight sweetheart, well, it's time to go
Goodnight sweetheart, well, it's time to go
I hate to leave you, but I really must say
Oh, goodnight sweetheart, goodnight
Goodnight sweetheart, well, it's time to go
Goodnight sweetheart, well, it's time to go
I hate to leave you, but I really must say
Oh, goodnight sweetheart, goodnight
Well, it's three o'clock in the morning
Baby, I just can't treat you right
Well, I hate to leave you, baby
Don't mean maybe, because I love you so
Goodnight sweetheart, well, it's time to go
Goodnight sweetheart, well, it's time to go
I hate to leave you, but I really must say
Oh, goodnight, sweetheart, goodnight
Mother, oh, and your father
Won't like it if I stay here too long
One kiss in the dark
And I'll be going
You know I hate to go
Goodnight sweetheart, well, it's time to go
Goodnight sweetheart, well, it's time to go
I hate to leave you, but I really must say
Oh, goodnight, sweetheart, goodnight

Subtle headcanon that when Jim or Oswald are talking to anybody else about Gotham they call it “My city”
Except when they’re talking to each other it’s suddenly “Our city” like they’re talking about their baby
The average argument over what’s best for Gotham sounds like a custody battle
Gotham's actually just a very long game of 'how close can Jim and Oswald be'

While doing this gifs yesterday i thought, this hesitation in Jim’s eyes, this question “What are you playing at? Is this a trap?” about open benevolence in Oswald went away later, starting with season 3.
I think he got it. He understood that it wasn’t a ploy - after Oswald went to Arkham for him, after Oswald didn’t try to get revenge for the fact that Jim left him on Dr.Strange’s mercy. They distanced from each other in s3a, but that scene in 3x18, i think it was different from their previous contacts. New understanding, maybe. New level of unspoken communication.
Well. it was stated in Jim’s guilty hallucination, with ‘Never leave your unit behind’. Eerie scene, and interesting - Jim tells Oswald that he has to find Bruce and goes away, subtextually - leaves Oswald because it’s Bruce who guides him. And earlier it was like my previous ramblings in a nutshell. Oswald speaks in backwards (i think?) Twin Peaks manner, and Jim can’t understand him, but then - he does. Metaphors on this show sometimes were strong.
Got curious after seeing @atcnm 's amazing post mentionning how Oswald speaks backwards in the Red Queen dream sequence so wanted to check and omg
Never leave your unit behind!
Something I really like, rewatching this episode, is the fact (if it is a fact, maybe I'm completely wrong) that not only does it bring out your biggest fears and make you hallucinate, it uses your environment. People who get infected with the toxin see devils in the people right in front of them, like the guy at the bank seeing Merton as a demon, or Oswald standing in front of Ed (well, Iceberg Ed) when he hallucinates him. So you'd think that anywhere he looks, he'd just see evil monsters or Ed bullying him but he does seem to actually see Jim and recognize that he can go to him for help

He actually looks at him before leaning against him
I’m going to say something controversial
I don’t think Oswald would call Jim “James” while they’re in a relationship.
Not as a replacement for Jim, not with any fondness. The only times Oswald ever calls him “James” is when he’s being passive aggressive as fuck to put distance between them and feign politeness/professionalism. Not everyone was strictly calling him “Jim” in the early days of Gotham and Oswald distinctly chose to call him “Jim” to go along with his old friend act. He continues to call him “Jim” because by acting like they’re friends he hoped to become friends and a shortened name indicates closeness. So why would he take a step back and start calling him “James” if he became his boyfriend? He’s more likely to be the type to say darling and dear and other pet names but mostly dear. How was your day, dear? Relax, Jim dear. I’ll take care of it, my dear.
“You are my boy
Baby can’t you see the look in my eyes
Look at my eyes that are in sorrow o-oh
Hotter than the red sun
You loved me, don’t make me cry
Ah ah let’s go”

Just doing an actual post of this because I felt like it and this scene was gold.
All Oswald wants here is to get revenge for his mother’s murder and kill Galavan. It would be the easiest thing in the world for Oswald to pull the trigger and just write Jim off as collateral damage, but he won’t do it. All Jim wants here is to allow Galavan to think he’s still onside and thus save the city. It would be the easiest thing in the world for Jim to pull the trigger and and just write Oswald off as collateral damage, but he won’t do it.
Oswald breaks down in front of Jim because he trusts him. Jim gives up his advantage over Theo because - in that moment - it was more important to him to comfort Oswald by acknowledging his grief and the truth of what he said.
All the later stuff about Jim being a dark killer at heart and Oswald not understanding what unselfishness and love actually meant was really the laziest bullshit.
