Dear Hades,
Through you, I’ve found an escape. From my overbearing mother, Who thinks that I’m a mere child, Her precious flower, Who she believes will wilt without her. Demeter is mistaken, Without her, I’ve grown only stronger. You’re nothing like they’d told me you’d be. You’re too warm to be the God of the Underworld, Too caring, Too happy. You’ve helped me realize, That I’m more than capable of being independent. My fondness for you wasn’t imminent, Your sullen demeanor at first made me question, Why had I ever run away in the first place? From my mother’s loving embrace? From the ambrosia and nectar, My very home. And all that I had ever known? Why would I, Goddess of Spring, Of Life, Run away to the Underworld? And leave behind my life as Kore? You welcomed me into your not-so-humble abode. With the glimmering riches of Earth, Diamonds, Rubies, Sapphires, And emeralds, Decorating each and every room. You told me, That you were lonely in your wealth, And wealth meant nothing if you were alone. You introduced me to Cerberus, Who is man’s worst nightmare, And who became my best friend. You showed me how to conduct business, Taught me the dualities of man. The worst were sent to the pits of Tarturus, The best to the Elysian lands. You were startled to see, That in the darkest of depths, That I could make anything grow.
You showed me, The only living thing in the Underworld, It was a pomegranate tree. From the fruit, I ate six seeds. A seed for each month, For six months, Throughout winter and fall, I’d rule alongside you, As Queen. The other six, I’d spend with my mother, Tending to spring and summer. Humanity now calls me, “Persephone”. Bringer of destruction, Of winter, Of illness, And of death. Hades, If I were again given the choice, My choice would never be any different. Love, Persephone
