Day 14 of posting cute creatures we found on our field trip:

Green lizard (Lacerta viridis) is a medium sized lizard that mostly feeds on insects. In our experience there are three genders of this lizard.

The first gender is nice female. All females of this species are nice. They don’t bite, they nicely pose, they aren’t too shy, just overall 10/10 lizards. This nice girl was also full of eggs, just look at the momma:

The second gender is angry male. This is a male that will bite and he will constantly keep his mouth open and ready. Very pissy. Males have bright blue throats.

He is seething. In fact he was so bitey that we had to put him in timeout. (Which means that we lifted him up high):

What a majestic beast. His mouth was still kinda open and ready to bite.

The third gender is confused male. This male gets super confused when you catch him. He stiffens up, doesn’t bite and stares at you:

Confused males are ideal to turn upside down so that we can see their beautiful blue throat.

Oh, but they aren’t always this gorgeous blue and green. Juveniles look nothing like adults:

This is a juvenile green lizard. It literally looks like it’s a different species. Juveniles are almost all nice, just like females, so males become angry or confused when they grow up.

(Btw, this is all just in our experience, there are probably angry and confused females as well as nice males, it’s just that we haven’t found any!)

Mediterranean green lizard (Lacerta trilineata) is one of my favorite lizards in the world. Both males and females have bright green body and bright yellow belly. The one up there is a girl. Males have a small speck of blue behind their ear:

This species is found all over Balkan Mediterranean (so Greece and Greek islands, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia and Turkey) and on Balkan side of Black sea (Romania and Bulgaria). There are several subspecies. These lizards were found in Montenegro.

Both males and females are very gentle and friendly. They pose very nicely and in some angles, they look like tiny angry dragons:
