Heroquest - Tumblr Posts

In 1992 after returning from the Gulf War my tank commander picked up a game called Heroquest. It was much like D&D but was played with miniatures on a board. My character was the Elf. We would play that game with some of the guys from the platoon starting Friday night and right on through Sunday. Drinking pot after pot if coffee until we were loopy. Those were some great days. I purchased this character from the PX out of a crystal and pewter case. This was early on in the figure market. There wasn't much available at the time. The pewter figs were very well done. This was my character and 30 years later the game has been revised and I still have my character, though it's not me playing it this time. This time we are painting every miniature. Speed painting for the most part but they will look good.

Playing through it right now… 🗡️🏹🧝♀️🧙
The latest version, anyhow (somehow I missed out on it the first time round) - I feel this is one of those foundational things in the hobby, like Fighting Fantasy/Choose Your Own Adventure books (and Space Crusade, that was very much my on-ramp into this kind of nerdery)
I do still distinctly remember the TV adverts, though…
(As an aside, I feel like the newest edition has done a much better job in terms of adding a modicum of diversity to the world than the original ever did… the advert is funny though 😆)
Edit: I’m now learning that the original North American run in the 90s did feature a couple of female PC models in expansions, not just the recent edition!
Have you played HEROQUEST ?
By Stephen Baker

HeroQuest is Milton Bradley's approach to a Dungeons & Dragons-style adventure game. One player acts as game master, revealing the maze-like dungeon piecemeal as the players wander. Up to four other players take on a character (wizard, elf, dwarf, or barbarian) and venture forth into dungeons on fantasy quests. Plastic miniatures and 3-D furniture make this game very approachable. Expansions were also released for this system.
The HeroQuest series consists of the main game and a number of expansions.
This game was made in cooperation with Games Workshop who designed the miniatures and helped in many of the production details including background world and art in the rule book and scenario book.

The art I produced so far is starting to take the shape of a game now that is being exported to Unity, but that is not all. We are working on the mechanics, so we need an enemy. I started working on a simple one, so I went for a goblin first. Why?
It's because I had a drawing of it already. As all my other characters, it comes from way back when. And also because I started reading Goblin Slayer.
The animated one was very much inspired by the ones from the board game HeroQuest. I played a lot when I was younger and I like the simplicity of it.
