Every single fic update there is an author trying frantically to find the right balance between a nonchalant aside of "leave a comment if you enjoyed =)" and clinging desperately to the coat tails of a random stranger, dragging along behind them on the street wailing "Please, please! I have to know what you thought! I'm desperate to talk to people about this! Ask me about the alliterative repetition! Ask me about the symbolism!"

Magical Theory (Pt 1 out of ?)

I am a massive nerd that analyzes and theorizes about everything. Here is a small part of my massive nerd headcanon on magic.

---

Magic is a form of energy and acts as an extension of magical folks’ bodies. Like any appendage or muscle, it needs to be used consistently or it will become weaker. As magic is constantly flowing into a ‘well’ inside their bodies, if a witch of wizard completely abandons their magic, they risk their magical energy overflowing and being subjected to complete destruction, like if a battery is overcharged (this can be seen in the formation of the Obscurus).

Spells are a way to release this energy. When a spell is cast, magical energy bursts out from the caster and becomes a new form of energy (electrical, kinetic, thermal, whatever) – and, like any energy conversion, some of the energy will be lost into the surrounding environment (usually in the form of heat). This is why, like Dumbledore said, “Magic always leaves traces.” This waste energy can hang in the surrounding environment from mere minutes to centuries and can act as an amplifier for magical energy being used in spellcasting later. If performed with precision, casting a spell will cause a minimal loss of magical energy and the spell will maintain optimal strength. If done poorly, the spell cast will be weak and a lot of magical energy will be lost into the surrounding area. However, precision of the spell casting is not the only thing that determines the amount of energy lost – the specific spell being cast and how powerful the caster is play a part in this as well.

Regarding the power of the spellcaster – some magical folk just have more magical energy flowing through them than others. It has nothing to do with blood status, unlike how likely a magical child is to be born (though some would claim otherwise), and is generally considered complete chance. Magical energy is extremely inconsistent in how strong of a flow will appear in them (though this may simply be because we have not found the proper way to measure or predict this form of energy yet). The more powerful the magical input into a person is, the more powerful their magical output will be which will, in most cases, increase the strength of the traces they leave behind.

In the case of the spell being cast – the more powerful the spell, the more energy it will require to produce and leave behind when cast. The power of spells is based on the effects it will have on the balance of nature and/or the intricacies required to evoke the necessary magic. Dark Magic is generally considered extremely powerful magic as many of the spells in this category require more than the focus and wand movements that other spells do – they require clear, volatile intention and extreme emotion. In some odd cases, however, presenting no emotion at all will have the same results. Blood sacrifices and horcruxes, some of the most powerful and dark magic known to wizardom, require rituals and tamper with someone’s very soul and being

Magical Theory (Pt 2 out of ?)

Another section of my ever-growing headcanon on magic.

---

Magic is split into three different categories: Light, Dark, and Regular

Light Magic is the most powerful form of magic on this list. It is used to cleanse and protect the soul, and consists of protection charms that can only be used against creatures of pure darkness, like the Patronus charm does with dementors, and some types of magic related to removing jinxes, hexes, and curses. This form of magic is extremely difficult to use as many spells require purity of the user and extremely delicate rituals (not unlike its dark counter-part). Unlike Dark Magic, however, Light Magic requires an intent desire to create joy, purity, and safety. Most Light Magic users are hardly ever spoken of anymore, as this type of magic is pretty much extinct except for a couple of spells, though many healers use magic that borders on being considered ‘Light’. According to legend, unicorns were the original users of light magic and passed on their magical knowledge to wizards of old (this has never been confirmed as truth however).

Note: This also may be the type of magic used by Lily Potter to protect her son right before Voldemort murdered her, though not all magic involving love can be considered ‘Light’.

Dark Magic is technically an umbrella term that covers two types of magic: unpredictable, mysterious, often dangerous magic and Black Magic. The unpredictable, mysterious magic in the section refers to magic involving things like the mind, emotion, life, and time just to name a few – all that fickle stuff you can’t mess with without risking severe consequences (like, reality-warping or life-altering consequences). Due to the lack of knowledge surrounding these topics and how dangerous manipulating these with magic can be, the use of this type of magic is prohibited without the knowledge and oversight of the Ministry of Magic. Time magic has the most relaxed oversight, as issues created can generally be fixed easily with a Time-Turner, which is why Professor McGonagall was able to keep a Time-Turner on her person and allow Hermione to use it (after some training, of course).

Black Magic is the most dangerous form of magic on this list. It is used specifically to inflict harm on others and unnaturally tamper with the soul. As stated by Adalbert Waffling, “Tamper with the deepest mysteries — the source of life, the essence of self — only if prepared for consequences of the most extreme and dangerous kind.” Each type of curse, potion, or what have you under this category has its own set of consequences, but they all corrupts its users – either just from the emotional and psychological toll of using it or through actually physically, mentally, of spiritually changing their being (which I'll talk about later).  This type of magic is strictly banned by the Ministry unless very specific circumstances arise (the most common being manhunts for dark wizards or war).

Regular magic is the daily stuff everyone can readily use – levitation charms, light-making spells, even fire-making spells. These spells require basic wand movements and some focus to perform, but anyone is technically capable of doing them without much trouble. This kind of magic can be practiced regularly and is acceptable to use at all times (except in the muggle world of course). It is considered a tool, which also means that it can be used for light of dark purposes (though this also depends on the spell or potion being used). Regular magic is also influenced by emotion – the more emotional the caster is, the stronger and more unpredictable their magic will become.
