As someone who did played RDR1 way back in 2014, long before there was even a RDR2 i do care about John, but i do care much more about Jack also.
At that time we know little about him and the rest of the gang, the only informations that we had was spoken by John, Dutch, Javier and Bill and it all seems that the gang pretty much hated John, Bill and Dutch being the prime examples and we also cared about John as a character because he was forced to do something that he clearly had no say in it, as it was forced by the BoI (Bureau of Investigation) into capturing his former members, the ending of RDR1 at that time was far more emotional and far more devastating for a lot of people, because it wasn't expected that John would have died.
Also Red Dead Redemption 1 was a game that it had more impact and more technological achievements then RDR2, for it's era it was the cutting edge of videogame media and the first time that western become a massive appeal in decades and outside of the movie industry.
So question for rdr1 fans
Are yāall attached to John?
Cause idk if me playing rdr2 first messed with my ability to care about John.
Like going off the ham ignore the rdr2 John done bad things. Hunts down Dutch and gang. Like Javier mission felt the longest ngl. Then we finally see Jack and Abgial expect thatās very short getting to know them. I wouldnāt care about them tbh. John died being gun down by government whom he helped.
Hm maybe Iām being too hard on game that came out and writing wasnāt there. But again ignoring the second game I feel there couldāve been more emotional wise š¤·š½āāļø

Just finished the Epilogue. I love this game so much. Micah... that ending was very satisfying. I love that its showing all the characters lives in the after credits. So much of it was spoiled, but its an almost 6 year game,, gonna expect major spoilers. Despite that, it was still lovely.
The story was beautiful, all the music and soundtrack is beautiful. Most of it wasn't my kind of music before but I love all thats in the game. I wish I could play it for the first time again.
I still love how it was Roger who did Mary's motion capture in the credits.
AND THE EAGLE THAT FLIES OVER RAINS FALL??
I've also grown to love John and Abigail a lot š«¶. Excited to see more of them in RDR1. Jack too! I love seeing John and Jack's relationship. (Saw major spoilers for that too :/)

crying thinking about how john and abigail should have grown old on beechers hope sending letters to jack who wanted to leave the ranch and go his own way with their blessing then crying harder at the fact jack likely would have gone to war or ended up on the run for not going.
then if he did go, heād either die anyway or be absolutely traumatised for the rest of his life so is there really anything nice about this vision good grief.
and if he didnāt, heād go to prison for a long time, or be shot, or end up on the run just like john was until he was eventually caught, going no contact with his parents the whole time.
