I'd like to say that when I first met you I fell for you instantly and I knew. But I didn't know. And it wasn't even a meet. I saw you at orientation first, trying your damnedest to put out the fire breathed out by the stupid mage cat that had tried to steal my spot as a student, not that I really knew what was going on at the time, that had somehow spread to your Housewarden's robes.
I didn't have much time to look at you then, frantically trying to avoid the chaos and near frozen by fear and confusion. But even in that you looked gorgeous. I blamed it on the lighting at the time, running to catch up with the grey and blue creature.
The second time I saw you was after I'd been enrolled for a while, chaos seemed to follow me as I adjusted to everything. By then I'd had to replace my glasses, not that I think the headmage intended to replace them until I had begged Riddle to bring it up with him, as I could hardly see any board or far from me and using my phone camera only did so much. I must've looked weird to you. I was staring, I know, but I could not help it, even if I was supposed to ask about your, albeit not as severe but incredibly inconvenient, injury that would keep you from participating in the spelldrive tournament.
I couldn't tear my eyes away from you then, unable to find any excuse for such behaviour even now. Only then did I learn your name, Jamil Viper. Had I known that name would haunt my every waking thought, I would not have asked it. Your hair looked so lovely that day. And the accessories you wore, I wondered if they'd look good on me, if I could watch you do your hair up.
I saw you play basketball the other day. I was sent to the school Gym to help do maintenance on the equipment. You had your club activities supervised by coach Vargas at the time, seeing as I was also there. Unbeknownst to you, the band on your uniform that you wear around your arm had fallen in the cafeteria in the lunch period before. I noticed and picked it up, sure enough that I would see you and return it eventually.
When I actually saw you there I stared again, as one with a crush does, I guess. You take my breath away. Coach Vargas yelled in my ear on accident, which embarrassingly made me flinch and cower. I have not gotten over loud noises, but I don't think I need to. God I still hope you didn't see that. But you might've.
Somehow I actually managed to talk to you and return the armband. Told you I liked the way your hair was up, that you looked cool playing basketball. I wish I could've kept talking but really, I probably only would have embarrassed myself. If you knew how red my cheeks were, how hot they felt after I'd gone out of sight. I'm sure you'd laugh at me. But I can't help myself, not when my heart threatens to break my ribcage when I so much as think about you. Your eyes are gorgeous too. Can't believe I never noticed them, but I don't look people in the eyes when speaking all that much.
Your eyes though, your eyes I adore. They are endlessly beautiful to me. They ensnare me, hold my attention, I can't look waya no matter how much I try, not that I want to though.
Not that you're ever going to read this. I'm going to hide this away later. I just had to get my thoughts out. But I, Inky, do adore you. Moreso than I have anyone before. But I won't call it love. I don't think I'd be worth that yet. Maybe one day, Jamil, maybe one day I will be worthy of calling you my love. Until then, I do hope you don't think I'm too weird.
I've got to leave it here though, the damned bird is calling me in again, for no reason I bet. My allowance better get higher, lest I go nuts here.

Jamil Viper. I wish I had the courage to speak to you. Even now my words falter and I stutter when you're the topic of discussion. I haven't very many friends but Ace and Deuce unfortunately do tease me about just how obvious I seem to be when it's about you. I can't help it. You take my breath away in the best way possible, make me feel happy.
I'll be the first to admit though that I wish you would never see my more pathetic side. The one that cowers, that freezes in fear, flinches at every little thing. I wish that if you did see me, not that you ever would, I'm not sure I'm quite special enough to be noticed by someone like you, you saw me through rose tinted glasses. As someone who was smart, sweet and whatever else I'm sure you and your darling silver tongue could come up with.
I've hidden away my first.. well I don't want to call it a letter to you, but that's what it is, I suppose. I've seen you around more often recently. I've unfortunately been busy. Recently I've been having a few nightmares and have been hoping to sleep in the afternoons rather than doing as many things as I previously had been. I'm writing this sitting in Savanaclaw.
Somehow I feel like you may know what I've done. I.. was talked into giving up the dorm should I fail to fulfill a contract. But I didn't want to agree to it. I don't like it. It's loud in Savanaclaw. I'm glad Leona is willing to share his room. I'm currently set up on his floor with an extra mattress and Grim, little weasel he is, got a nice cat bed. But even now you keep me awake.
I wonder what it would be like if I could lay next to you instead, run my hand along your back, hold you close and listen to your heart. Those are delusions but they are what has been getting me through. I'm tired and I'm anxious all the time, I just can't seem to relax. That's all I have for now. I wish my dreams were real.
Jamil, recently I saw you when it was raining. I was stuck under a small roof, trying to escape the downpour. I saw you running towards Sam's shop with your hood up. Has anyone told you you look like a snake from the side with your hood up? Your hair makes your Sideprofile look like it has a little fang. It's cute. I don't believe I'll ever say it to you. I did call out to you, saying Sam was in the cafeteria. He was organizing an ingredient bulk buy for the cafeteria ghosts. You thanked me and came over for a moment, ducking under the little roof as well. We were so close. And most importantly, I spoke to you. I saw your pretty eyes again.
My heart was beating out of my chest the entire time, I'm sure you saw how flushed I was. All I can do is hope I did not embarrass myself by saying something weird. I was so happy you were there, hiding from the rain with me. You asked me why I never look people in the eye when they speak. I told you it scared me. And then I told you your eyes were pretty. That you didn't scare me. And I meant it. I can't lie to you. Not when you hold my heart in your skilled hands. I'm glad I found this paper again.

It's been a while since I wrote a letter, I misplaced the last paper and cannot find it, so I'm starting a new one. I wish I had very much more to say but I haven't been seeing you and I've been so exhausted I've reached my breaking point. Heck. I almost drowned, simply because the water breathing potion wore off early. I guess being out of this world does that. But it hasn't stopped me from panicking. I'm recovering fine but it's very lonely in ramshackle. I already mentioned I have barely any friends and the ones I do have are very busy. Jack comes from time to time and Leona sends Ruggie to check on me. Winter holidays are starting soon. Will you be leaving? I hope I'll see you before you do. I want to look at you again, see those pretty eyes one more time before you're gone for a while.
I'm not sure it's a crush that I feel for you. I'm not saying I would see you as a friend or anything, I definitely feel romantic feelings for you, but my concern is they feel.. stronger than a simple crush should. I long to kiss you, hold you. I want you to love me as I do you. Jamil Viper, you have my heart.
I've made up my mind to visit Scarabia today. I heard the dorm is staying here. I want to see you. I need to see you. I'm so happy to see you.
The housewarden Kalim had something floating around his eyes when he was acting up. A spell. But I haven't seen it before. It was odd, pretty even. It reminded me of you but I've hardly a clue what spell it is, when I get back to ramshackle, I'll be researching, surely that spell is the cause of your woes. And I will find out what it is, if only to slightly lighten the burden placed on you. You who is like a walking dream, the most wonderful of desert mirages. I wish I could tell you to your face.
The paper was crumpled and slightly ripped at the edges. Ink had somewhat covered a large portion of the paper that held scribbles about theories of what was going on, and further ramblings about just how beautiful the writer thought he was, how they longed for him, loved him even. And it was not Inky that held it. Dark eyes skimmed the text that grew more and more unreadable. Drip. Drip. Drip. Drip. Blast it all. Hissing filled his ears. Hissing that was not there. His mind played tricks, not yet recovered from the heavy strain his body had been under. He hated it all, hated how he had accidentally blinded himself. How he'd overlooked something so obvious, she did always wear her heart on her sleeve.
He wished he could read more, but he'd dripped it full of ink. He'd crumpled it. He'd thrown it aside. By coincidence it wound up in his grasp again when he had returned to Scarabia, sitting down to rest his aching and unrecovered legs.
Jamil messed up. He really did. He felt blind and stupid and most of all he felt crushed, he was sure that the prefect no longer felt that way about him. He was sure she hated him now. How else would anyone feel if they'd have done to them what he'd done to her? For the first time he deeply regretted lashing out at someone. His anger wasn't even directed at her. He felt his eyes glaze over, blinking away his tears. It was his fault. But maybe. Maybe he could express himself, his sorrow and his apologies. He would have to. If only to selfishly soothe the painful feeling in his chest.

Have I ever told you your hair looked pretty the way you wear it? The way you tie that beaten up black bandana around your dark hair that only barely differs in colour enough to differentiate? The blue in it makes it easier perhaps, but it's a recent change, from what I'd seen. Has the headmage decided to pay for a visit to the local hairdresser? I can't help but think you look nice, though your messy hair from before had its charm.
I digress. Your hair is not why I'm writing this, though I could go on about yours. I wanted to apologize to you. I want you to know that I regret nothing more than treating you the way I did. I took advantage of the way it seemed you could look only me in the eyes when speaking to someone. I betrayed Kalim. But that didn't hurt me as much as it did to betray you.
I found one of them, your letters. I wonder how many more there are. I wonder if any of them describe how much I'd hurt you. When I read it my heart ached and cracked and broke. It bled. I wish I'd known sooner. I wish I'd known about the incident with Azul. I wish I hadn't turned your dream, your desert mirage into a walking nightmare.
No, that wouldn't do. It didn't feel right. It felt.. Jamil didn't know what it felt like. He crumpled this paper too, throwing it way towards a trash can. He'd set up in his room, ducking away from prying eyes. But no matter how many papers he wrote, nothing felt right, felt good. It just wouldn't compare to the words she'd written about him. For once in his life he was at a loss. He had no plan, he didn't know what to do.
To make matters worse a knock sounded. Kalim. He was asking for tea once Jamil was free, but really, Jamil needed a break. He sighed a frustrated sigh and opened the door. He told Kalim he'd make him the tea, not noticing he'd kicked a ball of paper into the hallway. The most recent letter he'd thrown away. Kalim noticed it only after Jamil had left it. Picked it up and read it too. Kalim was a lot of things, though he acted carefree, dense and yes, kind of stupid, he was observant. He knew people. He knew Jamil. And he knew who this letter was addressed to. Even if it has been weeks since then, almost a month even. Sure, Jamil had thrown this letter out, but it was something Jamil had been doing for those weeks. Shutting himself in his room for at least an hour and especially at night the light from there would keep burning. And Kalim had had enough. He decided to help.
And that he did. He took the letter and headed straight for Ramshackle. It was pouring rain on campus. Ramshackle wasn't much better, seeing as it was an old building. Heck, he'd met the prefect a while back and they looked exhausted and slightly injured.
Kalim knew the dorm needed renovations but.. when he got there it was worse than he expected. Sure some areas were fixed up but the stairs had holes and the roof leaked, judging by the bowls and buckets all over the floor. The old couch was a bit uncomfortable but it was better than the creaky floor. It was cold too, so much so that the prefect wore a jacket. But with a broken window, courtesy of some Savanaclaw students who had been ostracized and punished well enough by Leona according to the prefect, everyone would be cold. The prefect wrapped a blanket around kalim, seemingly the only nice one. The one from their room which they'd struggled to move down the stairs that were obviously breaking more and more under anyone's step, no matter how light.
The prefect, or, as he knew her better, Inky, had gotten injured fighting Jamil. A bandage around their arm indicated that. Their shirt had a sleeve lifted to accommodate. One of the snakes in Jamil's hair had bitten her there, ripping out a bit of skin. But that was the only injury she'd really gotten. The other bandages and bandaids were from the poor condition of their living quarters. She twisted her ankle going up stairs as one of the boards gave way, the floorboards made her trip and bruise, the large shards of the broken window had cut her hands. And still Crowley was running this girl dry. He'd talk to Crowley afterwards. He finished drying his hair off with one of the few nice towels the prefect did have. he'd gotten it before the blanket.
No more time should be wasted. He spoke. "Jamil is upset. Stressed. He shuts himself in his room for an hour at least almost every day. His light burns into the night. I wanted to know what he's doing. I found this in the hallway and it's.. addressed to you as far as I know. I don't think he wanted you to see this. But if he keeps this up he'll never say what he wants." Kalim was worried. More than. The prefect skimmed the letter. She sighed, her lips pressing together. She should tell Kalim.. and she did. Because her letters couldn't stay hidden anymore. Jamil mentioned them in his writing.
"I write letters to Jamil about my encounters or thoughts of him. I didn't think he knew. But I must've dropped the one I was writing at the time in Scarabia.", she explained, her gaze pointed at the letter in her hands, tears welling up in her eyes now as she continued, her voice breaking as she spoke as steady as she could,
"I miss him. I thought he hated me. I'm.. I'm not good at reading people. I can't look people in the eyes but it was so easy with him. I'm scared to try again. But- But I want to. I've just been.. far too busy. The storm that's been plaguing the island has been causing trouble. The other students have been causing trouble. Everything is loud all the time and I can't take it..! I want to see Jamil. But I can't. I have too much to do. This dorm is falling apart. Someone needs to fix it and Crowley sure as hell isn't doing it. I can't leave here right now."
Kalim nodded his white haired head. He sighed. This was harder than he thought. So Jamil wants to apologize but cannot bring himself to do it in person in fear of Inky being.. scared of him. And Inky.. is way too busy to do much of anything and the storm outside is destroying the old dorm she lives in. No wonder she's hardly been seen, she's constantly repairing her home here. And she could barely keep up much of anything. Everything costs way too much for the little amount of money she gets.
That was an hour ago. Kalim was sitting in the common room, drying off and being oddly quiet. He was thinking. He should.. oh.. he doesn't know what he should do. He should tell Jamil though. Tell Jamil the prefect wants to see him again, but is struggling to make time for anything. When he passed Kalim, the latter called out to him.
"Jamil..! I visited Inky..! Apparently she's really busy.. and she looked hurt all over! I'm worried about her..!" He said in a slightly overdramatic tone. Jamil's face held a look of concern, genuine worry even for only a split second.
"What's happened to the prefect? Why were you visiting her in this storm anyway?", the long haired desert dweller asked.
"Well..! We haven't heard from her at all and I got worried..! You won't believe the condition she's living in, it's terrible Jamil..! She's freezing because of broken windows and the creaky floor is made of tripping hazards..! She almost fell so many times..! And the stairs too, they're so old they have holes and they almost break when anything with any weight lands on it..! The roof is leaking too! It's terrible Jamil!" Kalim had to take a short breather after that. There was no way he could keep talking out of breath. Even all that was enough to send dread to the pit of Jamil's stomach. Was it really that terrible in ramshackle?
"Their roof is leaking too! They can barely keep up with replacing the buckets and bowls and her ankle twisted funny the other day..! She looked so tired.. I want to cheer her up.. but I don't know what to do..! Even I can tell how unsafe it is in there..!"
Now that had Jamil actually shocked. The prefect had been living in that the whole time? How could anyone even- he couldn't believe it. His mouth spoke before his head could react. "Put her up in Scarabia. Get her to stay here-"
And that was what Kalim was hoping for. He may not be good in school or anything like that and rely on Jamil a lot. But. He could think for himself. He could make his own plan. And he did. And it worked.
"You know what Jamil? That's a great idea! I should have my parents donate some money to renovate Ramshackle.. can you tell the principal to tell the prefect?"
Who would've thought Kalim would manipulate someone, and so well too. Not that it was big. But it went very well. Jamil didn't protest. He left. He went to go see the headmage to tell him what happened. What would happen. And while he did that Kalim called his parents. He told them the same thing. Told them about the living condition of the prefect. Ramshackle would most definitely get renovated, even if it would take quite some time. Funds were no issue after all.

When the call came in through the more than slightly old wall mounted landline that the Ramshackle prefect and Grim were to pack their clothing as well as other essentials and report to the headmage's office immediately, Inky was left confused and Grim, well, he was worried that they were getting thrown out after all. "Because the prefect wasn't pulling their weight" he said, knowing that he caused more messes than she did. So they both sat in the office silently.
They had been soaked and shivered from the raging storm, which had rolled in from the sea around the island and due to its nature, as it was a magical storm, would not stop for a few days, maybe even the rest of the week, but that was unlikely according to the headmage. Also according to the headmage, they would be temporarily residing in Scarabia. Reason being that the Al Asim family had agreed to donate funds for the renovation of Ramshackle. Why they donated? The headmage would not say, but it was absolutely because of the absolute garbage living conditions of having to stay in a building that was falling apart around Inky and grim.
"Thanks to my endless generosity, and a hefty donation by the Al Asims, Ramshackle will be renovated! Professor Tonyxx will be overseeing the process as they insisted..!" Were his words. At this point this was dragging in entirely too long and the prefect was somewhat struggling with the feeling of the wet fabric against their skin. Inky had always hated the feeling. Sensory issues are what that feeling was referred to. Usually Inky would manage, sure, a little wet clothing was fine, but this time she was soaked and she hated it. It was getting more and more overwhelming when their thought process got interrupted with a knock from the door.
"Headmage, is the prefect in yet? Kalim sent me to pick them up" A familiar, albeit muffled voice sounded through the door. It was Jamil.
"Come in Viper, they're here..!" The headmage answered and the old mahogany door opened to reveal Jamil Viper, clad in his dorm uniform, hood pulled up, the one that made him look like a snake from the side, as Inky had remarked in a letter. Even if Jamil had no clue about that. She looked at him, all dry and still so pretty. He was recovering, well, to her, he should have already been fully recovered despite a slight pain still surprising Jamil every now and then.
Inky nodded up at Jamil in greeting, which he returned, puzzled on the inside on why she was still wet and hadn't been offered a towel at the very least. "Take her and Grim to Scarabia and ensure she feels welcome there viper..!" The headmage said, mumbling something about how he was generous enough to allow this.
Outside of the slightly dark office Jamil used his magic pen to summon a towel each for both grim and Inky, though while Grim had his towel flopped down onto him by magic, Jamil was nice enough to actually hand over the towel meant for the prefect. "Here, you're still soaking wet.. the headmage didn't offer you anything to dry off with I see..?" He said, to which the prefect shook her head. They weren't even speaking to him apparently. Not like Jamil would know but the prefect had simply gone nonverbal.. Grim however communicated just fine and thanked Jamil for both of them.
Generously enough Jamil carried the one slightly large bag the prefect did have while the prefect in question carried a smaller bag with Grim's essentials. Jamil noticeably slowed his pace when he realised the prefect was limping a bit, the fact that he still saw the bandage on their arm, he regretted hurting her. It would most definitely leave a scar, aside from that all the other more minor injuries did still worry him. Crowley was running this girl more ragged than Kalim ran him at times. Jamil felt guilty for what he did, adding to her woes instead of lightening the load like everyone else should have done ages ago. He felt sick to his stomach when he remembered he'd sent her to die out in the desert after she'd nearly drowned barely a few weeks before. And now they weren't even speaking to him.
At least they'd reached Scarabia in little time despite going slower than usual. Kalim was there to greet them both, waving at the prefect. He dragged them off to their new room, Jamil and Grim in tow, so that Inky could put her things away and shower so they could heat up their cold body. Kalim gave them the whole excited spiel of them making themselves at home with Grim and that there was a small party later that had been planned in advance. The prefect was welcome to join them, according to Kalim. While she showered and changed Jamil was busy in the kitchens preparing some finger foods for the party that would be in a few hours, two maybe.
If he was really honest he wasn't even actually thinking about the food, but Inky instead. Something was up. Something about her felt a bit more off. They were struggling to keep their eyes open earlier. And she hadn't said a word since.. well, since he had come to pick her up. Maybe even before, he didn't know. He wished he did. He wished he knew.
Apparently the prefect spent a long time in the extra bathroom, that was according to grim, who had joined Kalim in the lounge. Him and the housewarden were talking.
"Inky's overwhelmed today. She has been for a while.. don't tell her I told you this though, she'll get upset because she'll 'dampen the mood' or whatever.. can you give me more of that tuna?" The cat thing said, nodding along when Kalim handed the delicious canned food over.
"Thank you.. anyway. She likes Jamil a whole lot, read her.. well it's not a diary but whatever. Have him watch over her a bit tonight. There's gonna be a few really loud people here today from what you've said about this party." Grim finished as Kalim agreed to what grim was saying.
"Yeah.. I'll host less parties while she's here, this one's just been planned for a really long time, or I'd be calling it off at any moment" the white haired housewarden laughed to himself, if only to make the topic feel less heavy. "He'll be there to watch over her, no worries..!"
When it was time and the party was in full swing it was a lot of things all at once, people chatting, music playing, lights that flashed and pulsed along the walls and decorations. The prefect Inky stood in the corner farthest away from the loud music in a t-shirt and sweatpants courtesy of Kalim, she'd refunded anything else as she wasn't really in the mood to wear something that could pay for her living expenses for months. Unfortunately some Pomefiore students had thought she'd be rather fun to mock because of this. They witnessed her orientation, they witnessed how the mirror had told her she was not wanted at this school. And they didn't like the way she looked that night, it was a party, not her living room, so why should she show up in sweatpants and a t-shirt? A cute little party dress was the right way to go, but she wouldn't fit into one. That's what they were whispering about at least. Not that it was true but at the moment Inky had little will to fight back.
Fact is she was really only barely keeping it together. The party was too loud for right now, she was exhausted and people were making fun of her. So as tears started forming in her eyes she sank to the floor, covering her ears as they started falling. Her body shook as she sat there crying at the back of the lounge as the Pomefiore students continued to mock her, but they were quickly silenced when Jamil approached them, and he glared at them.
"What joke must you be telling that it's got all of you laughing? Please, do tell me so I can tell the housewarden, I'm sure he'd love to hear it as well" He said, venom lacing his words, which seemed to send them spluttering for an excuse before dispersing. All of them avoided his gaze in fear of getting hypnotised. Good. He might've. But instead of focusing on that he went over to Inky, who had been trying her best to be quiet and to block out the song blasting through the speakers at the moment. He knelt down to her, tapping one of her knees gently. It got her attention, she flinched slightly in surprise in response before lifting her head quickly and looking at Jamil with wide, tear filled eyes. She looked so frightened, Jamil's heart sank. He hoped with every fiber of his being he wasn't the cause, but at least.. she looked at him, in his eyes. He nodded towards a door. That one led to a corridor, where the way to Kalim and his rooms were. It would be quiet there, his room was somewhat soundproof after all. He held out his hands and quickly, along with a sound that indicated she wanted out, Inky gripped them. Jamil recognised the simptoms, a meltdown. The way she was covering her ears before he intervened, she was pulling at her hair.
She wanted out. So he would take her out. She was breathing heavier than normal, heaving slightly even, as if a boa constrictor was wrapped around her neck. And if he could alleviate whatever else she felt, he would. It wasn't enough to make up for the scar that was forming on her arm.. but it was a start to him.
Luckily the walk wasn't long. And once there he guided her to sit on his bed, so that he could close the door fully and lock it too, they didn't need any disturbance right now. Who knows what that would do. So now he stood across from her, from Inky. She clutched her legs to her chest as she cried a little more, so Jamil gave her a glass of water. She didn't like the taste, he knew because she'd mentioned it over lunch, but it was all he had at the moment and he didn't want her to have a headache.
They sat in silence. They sat across from each other until she was done. She was looking at the bed Inky sat on most of that time while Jamil's eyes were on her and her only. Yes Jamil was worried for her since she wouldn't speak, couldn't speak, but he still found her pretty, even now when she looked so disheveled. How come he never noticed just how pretty he thought she was? But then she was done. And he placed the glass on his nightstand. What now? He didn't know what to do, but he should think of something, right? Why was it that now of all situations when he needed his brain to work as normal, it wouldn't? What was it that really made his mind blank so much?
Jamil was in his own head at the moment, maybe even a little too far for once, since he hadn't even noticed Inky uncurl herself slightly to come closer, closer and closer yet, only to somewhat throw herself at him to hug him. And she just cried. That's what brought Jamil back from his almost chronic habit of overthinking so that he could find a good solution. But now instead of thinking about what he could do to help her, he landed on his bed, Inky half way on top of him and laying there holding onto him for comfort as she let out an actual sob.. and a sniffle and another and another.
It took him a second but he realised all he had to do.. was hold her there for a bit until she didn't cry anymore, until she felt comforted enough. Not that Inky did move after she stopped crying. She was too tired and it was warm and comfortable where she was. So she fell asleep, right there, resting her head on Jamil's chest. And Jamil stayed there. The dark haired young man had no intention of waking her for once, because right now? He was crying himself. He didn't even notice. But he knew she didn't hate him now. That she trusted him enough to not attack her again. That she felt safe around him. And so for once, he too slept. Because he could, once at least, not bother with the party or the cleaning. This was more important. This felt better.

With the ring of his Alarm Jamil came to, he tried to ignore the alarm for a moment, slightly clinging to the comfortable, soft and warm weight on his chest. Though he did crack his eyes open at that, turning off his alarm with one of his hands. He raised his head a little to look at his chest, where Inky still laid, still slightly asleep, lightly clutching a fistful of his shirt in one hand and holding him close with the other. She was slightly snoring too, how cute. At least she wasn't wearing her glasses, that'd be uncomfortable. She must've taken those off yesterday when Jamil wasn't looking, or something.
Either way, the way the sun was peeking through his windows, through his curtains, the way the light hit her? She looked beyond gorgeous despite her slightly messy curly hair, despite the clothing that didn't quite fit her. It took his breath away for a moment. She laid so still he could count the freckles on her face, so lovely. And she was so soft. Jamil's hand traced along her back, reaching a patch of warm soft skin where the shirt Kalim had lent her lifted up over night. His heartbeat quickened. Did she feel like this when she looked at him? Because she looked like a dream right now.
Jamil just stared at her for a while, he knew he should wake up, that he had to start on breakfast or whatever duties else he had, but he couldn't bring himself to.
Eventually, but not too long after he had thought about having to read away but being absolutely incapable, she stirred. Inky grumbled, using Jamil's chest to hide from the sun that had woken her with its light. It was too cute, Jamil couldn't help but smile to himself for a moment, lifting his hand to stroke her hair. Now that made her let out a pleased sound. Maybe she wasn't quite aware yet but that was good, it meant Jamil could keep staring a little. Even though it was only a little, it still felt nice. He'd hurry with breakfast in a bit, but for now he got to watch Inky wake up. She opened her eyes slightly, blinking away her sleep and trying her best to look Jamil in the eyes with the light being just slightly too bright still. She smiled too, couldn't help it, a happy smile, a smile of a lovestruck idiot perhaps too, but Jamil didn't know that was what the latter looked like, what he did know is that he liked it, he liked it a lot when she looked at him like that. Onto his eyes when she was clearly at their most vulnerable.. how sweet, how wonderful.
After a few minutes Inky did actually move to get up, stretching her upper body as Jamil sat up and did the same, though he moved to get off his bed. Alani searched around for her glasses, they'd landed on the other side of the bed overnight but at least they were fine. She put them on when Jamil had approached her with some clothing spares he had. A fresh pair of sweatpants, courtesy of himself this time, and a spare basketball jersey.
"You can change into these.. they should fit you well and I don't mind if the jersey gets sweaty, grim mentioned you aren't as heat resilient last.. last time you were.. here" Jamil said, pressing his lips into a line and reminding himself that he'd done something terrible the last time. But before he could think himself into more of a pessimistic view Inky took the clothing from his hands with a sweet smile, to ease his nerves. It worked a bit, until Jamil spoke up again.
"I'm.. sorry. Truly sorry. I did terrible things to you and I even tried to kill you. I hurt you. I hurt you so badly you still wear a bandage. Let me make it up to you, please..?" He somewhat ranted on, he couldn't even look at her for a moment until she tugged at his shirt, for him to see that she was looking at him, right into his eyes. Wasn't she scared at all? Most everyone else certainly was.
"Jamil.. it's okay. You may have hurt me.. but I'm not scared of you. I could never be. I've been wanting to visit you for weeks, but I couldn't because I was preoccupied. Now that I am here, I will stay." Inky said, surprising herself with how steady her voice was. "Thank you by the way.. for the clothing and especially last night.. sorry you had to see that, I never really wanted you to, it's kinda pathetic"
Jamil blinked at her for a moment. She thought that? Really?
"Of course I helped you last night.. it was the least I could do, besides, you looked more than distraught." He said, taking a breath before uttering his next few words. "After you changed.. would you like to.. join me in the kitchen to make breakfast? I remember you being a good cook"
Inky would love to do that, she nodded and told him so. She changed in the bathroom adjacent to Jamil's room, he had the luxury of having a room with one of those as the vice housewarden, and Jamil changed in his room, waiting for her to finish. She knocked on the bathroom door just to make sure Jamil was dressed before entering, now wearing his sweatpants and *his* jersey. Jamil stared for a second. Her hair was so poofy and the jersey looked good on her too. She was smiling at him, was she blushing? He could swear she was.
They moved to the kitchen but even then Jamil couldn't help but sneak glanced over as they prepared breakfast. Inky had been helping him cut and prepare some requested dishes that he had the recipe for all while he freestyled a little. This domestic moment felt nice, calming, healing, good. And Inky looked so happy to be around him in a calm, appreciating, loving way. Good god. By the sevens. Jamil couldn't also be falling could he? No way. Sure this had likely been brewing unnoticed for a while but absolutely not, he couldn't be, could he?

Breakfast in Scarabia that morning ranged from traditional foods of Arabic and Indian origin as well as other requested dishes, that had been asked for by several students in the dorm. Of course there were the usual breakfast items as well for those who liked cornflakes and the like for breakfast, a few fruits too. Scarabia was incredibly lucky to have Jamil as well as the few helpers that were there. Jamil did most of the prep work this morning with Inky, a few other students had joined them later, helping them in the kitchen.
It was nice to have the help but Jamil liked the quiet of that morning before the other students showed up. By now he'd woken up Kalim too so that he wasn't missing breakfast. Scarabia's dining hall was, at least, still clean and the lounge, where the party had been, wasn't too bad for once. It seems like kalim had gotten help and tidied up a little after the party with a few others. It was the least he could do, he knew Jamil was taking a break and perhaps asleep and that the prefect Inky was with him.
For now however they all ate together, talked and made plans, just enjoyed each other's company in the morning while the magical storm raged outside on nightraven's campus. It was strange how different the weather was but it was a nice change to always being cold. That's what Inky thought at least. Her room at home was always nice and warm, but she was always lonely there. Here she wasn't. She had good friends here and Jamil was here too. Good god she knew how smitten she was over Jamil. She'd really been charmed by the snake and didn't care to do anything about it.
Over breakfast it was Jamil that sat across from her, next to Kalim who sat at the table head. Inky was sitting on Kalim's other side, grim having been squeezed in between her and another student. And right then Jamil was stealing glances at her. How could he not? There was just something about her in his jersey. Though it didn't take long for the dorm leader to speak up though.
"Hey Inky, no offense but I noticed your clothes seem really beat up these days.. do you have any nicer clothes? If not we could go and have some nice ones made!" He offered, which actually would be pretty.. pretty great, but Inky still shook her head.
"I couldn't afford that, I've been living off a few thrifted clothes Sam had so they're not gonna be the nicest.. no offence taken though, I get what you mean."
"Did I say you'd be paying? I thought I could get you some nice clothes since you've been doing so much for the school and I think it's more than unfair you don't get recognised for that..!"
Kalim laughed slightly and smiled at her, which made Inky gawk a little.
"I won't say no to gifts but I'll feel like I need to give something back.. so maybe let's not make it too extravagant" Inky said, agreeing but asking for only sensible amounts of money spent.. because she really did feel like she had to give something back if Kalim went through with that idea but something that she also thought, yet didn't say, was that she felt expensive things would be a waste on her.
After calling ahead at home for a car, or rather a limousine, which was standard for kalim, and informing the headmage that they would be using the mirror to take an impromptu trip to the scalding sands. Inky had also changed into some simple jeans and a t-shirt by that point, using a hair clip that had been a gift from Ace and Deuce to put back their curly hair. When they arrived it was already quite hot and Inky was happy for the well working AC in the car, even though the t-shirt did help.
A little drive through the city with a pair of cheap headphones in one ear later and they had arrived at a tailor's, though they also had ready made clothing as well there.
The music Inky was playing during the ride was playing from an old music gadget, a Hamelin-piper which was similar to an iPod from back home, that saved music via something like a USB cable. It was a bit girlish and had the name Gertrude in its casing, it had been the little gadget's nickname apparently. That was from Cater, who had found it but had no real need for it anymore since he had a phone and better tastes nowadays. She was glad he was willing to give it to her even if she had to get used to the music, not that it was a weird genre to her though.
Back to the topic, the Tailor that Inky had been semi dragged into by Kalim and that Jamil followed them both into was quite high end, so a little overwhelming in the first moments. Kalim asked Jamil to step out and talk to one of the people in charge about readying a consultation for custom garments as well as picking out some nice fabrics, since Jamil did have quite good taste. You know, to get him out of the room so that Inky and Kalim could pick outfits and surprise Jamil when the occasion came to wear them. Smart move there, bud.
So he asked for Inky's preferences, so she would feel comfortable in the clothes he suggested. Now, he was not Vil, but he did know his way around the store and even enlisted an employee to help pick things out. Inky picked things out too. Of course she wasn't actually planning to ask Kalim to buy all of those, that would be crazy and she'd feel bad because of the sheer amount of money. But they did get outfits that were quite nice, you know, a skirt or two, some shirts, a good sweatshirt, and a thin jacket, a couple of pairs of shorts, about three.. oh and a hoodie. Inky actually asked for a hoodie since she felt they were comfortable. As well as a singular outfit set consisting of a dark blue cropped wrap top with bishop sleeves and a maxi skirt she could wear at both hip height and at her natural waist, both had small white and sometimes tiny yellow flowers all over it. It was clear that Inky really liked the way it looked, it seemed to be a favourite. But that was all she'd pick and she was sure it was all kalim was going to be allowed to pay for, by her own standards.
Due to that she was surprised when Kalim nudged her towards a fitting room. She needed.. a dorm uniform! Grim had mentioned that Inky admired the other dorm's uniforms, Scarabia included, when she first saw them and Kalim decided that Inky deserved one! Because Grim also let slip that the prefect felt sort of left out, without that special uniform. So after a lot of measuring, talking about preferences and finally choosing fabrics, the seamstress said she'd be in touch, especially with designs and suggestions she would personally have.
After they were done and outside Kalim looked at his phone and waved Jamil down. Apparently his parents wanted to talk to Kalim, so how about they go back to the Al Asim estate and Jamil could show Inky around the park at the front? Surely the animals would be a lovely sight and Jamil was so knowledgeable about them and the two would have fun together! Inky agreed, on the condition that Jamil also had to wholeheartedly agree and want to show her around. Surprisingly, Jamil did agree to do that, show her around and spend time with her. The ride to Kalim's family's home was quiet and nice. Kalim and Inky shared the headphones this time, because kalim was curious what Inky listened to on her little 'Gertrude', other than that everything seemed normal until they halted.

The Asim family estate was.. absolutely gigantic. Overwhelming almost. Almost. It was fine because it was quiet, but Inky was sort of glad she didn't live in a place as grand when she couldn't find her way around. But she didn't have to. She had Jamil, ever reliable, the desert mirage refusing to fade before her. Kalim had left for his parents when they arrived so now Jamil was walking around and showing them around the lavish and honestly a bit excessive home of the Asim family.
It was nice at first and Inky and Jamil did enjoy it until Jamil sped up a little and that made Inky call out to him. It wasn't the first time, and since they were heading out to the garden, well.. park, right now, Inky decided to be brave. She decided to reach for a bit of his hand, he let her. His fingers were calloused from all his work but Inky didn't mind. His hand was warm. Or at least the bit that she held was. Jamil noted how her hands had bandaids in a lot of places, who knows from what, but it wasn't all that great. Still, it would be fine because she would heal quickly.
They walked and Jamil told her about the animals they'd kept at the park here, how they roamed freely and why, that they were all peaceful and trained, had been raised by humans since they were young in most cases, even though it went against their very nature usually. But still there were peaceful tigers roaming and living amongst elephants and peacocks. And that made Inky stop, which in turn stopped Jamil.
"You have tigers here?" She blinked, her eyes gathering light as she seemed to animate more, come a little more to life.
"Yes, we do.. they are used to humans and seem to like them. I'm guessing you'd like to see?" Jamil asked her, to which they nodded furiously. Alright then, to the tigers they went.. well not directly to them, but they walked around to find one. Seeing a tiger was certainly a wish Jamil could fulfill right then. They did find one, one of the older tigers and a very sweet lady. Slowly they approached, Jamil leading her and helping Inky navigate the carnivorous creature.
Jamil deemed it safe, so after a bit of getting used to Inky's presence and some light getting to know eachother, the old tigress did allow Inky to softly stroke her fur, just a little. And Inky was amazed, the look she gave Jamil, with the stars of the desert night sky seeming to reflect in them although it was midday, his heart skipped. He could feel it again, that sensation of falling. He was falling for her. But he wouldn't say anything. He wouldn't admit it to himself. There was no way after all. Even when she pulled him in next to her to sit under a tree in the semi shade a little while later he wouldn't admit it.
She expressed her wish to spend time with him again in the city, just him and her. She wasn't quite looking at him when she said that, a little too nervous to do so, but Jamil agreed. A little while passed in which Jamil thought about something.
"why aren't you afraid of me? Why is it that you look me in the eyes so carelessly when I could easily take advantage?"
"Because you feel safe to me, you feel like my room at home, only less lonely. I spent a lot of time in my room at home because it was my safe space. Sure you hurt me but your anger wasn't directed at me. Besides, how could I be scared after last night? I liked that. Being held by you. It was probably the best comfort I've received in a while" Inky said, which made Jamil stare a little in slight disbelief. Inky moved closer, as did he. They both did until a tiny rock fell on Jamil's head.
One of the monkeys had decided to wreak havoc and thigh he usually would've been upset, he couldn't be, not when Inky was laughing about it and it just sounded amazing. Maybe he was talking after all.. and maybe that was okay, just this once.

When Kalim had returned and was wandering through the park to find both Jamil and Inky sitting with one of his tigresses he beamed. They were getting along so well! Inky seemed to be laughing about something and Jamil had a little grin on his face, how lovely!
"Jamil! Inky! Guess what! Al'ab Nayira! The Yasamina River Fireworks Fest! We're hosting this year! And my family says I'll be in charge of making rounds and greeting guests this year!" Kalim said, excitement clearly evident in the tone and slightly higher volume. It startled Inky a little. She blinked, trying to make heads and tails of what Kalim, who came over as well to pet the tigress and love on the old girl a little, had just said before turning to Jamil.
"What festival is that? Is it famous here?"
"Yes, it's a big firework festival and a rather popular tourist attraction, it's held annually and every year the wealthy families of Silk city rotate and someone else hosts, it seems it's the Asims' turn this year."
"Fireworks? Really? Are they pretty? I want to see them one day!" There they were again, the little stars in her eyes that Jamil thought were pretty. He wished in that moment to spend the festival with her, even if he was still in denial about his feelings.
"Very! Oh I know! Inky! Why don't you join us? My family said I can invite guests, so what about you and Grim? I'm sure he'd like it here too, considering there'd be a lot of tasty food and stuff!" Kalim suggested, not a bad idea, but Jamil would have to deal with Grim, though he'd noticeably become milder recently.
Unfortunately for Jamil, Kalim had managed to invite four more people to the festival, technically two, those being Cater and Lilia, but they had received a plus one each. On the day of, Jamil had learned that Cater had invited Trey and that the Malleus Draconia would also be attending, not to mention that apparently Lilia had come down with something after his last meal the night before. He swore under his breath he'd grow grey early, if Kalim hadn't already managed to make it happen and he'd somehow deluded himself into not noticing.
It wasn't that terrible at least, but Grim fell into a Canal among arriving and a small history lesson about the building of Silk City and its economy by Kalim and Jamil ensued. Cater was already snapping pictures as well. Everyone else seemed stunned as well as the conversation drifted to the fact you could see the Asim family's house from where they were.
"Woah! That place is.. totes huge! That's your house Kalim?" Cater asked, more than stunned, which the Asim heir confirmed and Jamil added that it was a landmark of the city and that any taxi driver would know where to go when you told them that the Asim estate was your destination.
"It's kind of unbelievable.. hey prefect, you don't seem all that phased by this, why's that?" Trey said in a low voice, then questioning that Inky, who had been quietly listening, someone not of this world, was so unsurprised.
"Oh that's because I was here last week for an afternoon, Kalim was nice enough to get me some nicer clothes since mine were thrifted and after frequent use.. kinda busted" She answered honestly. "We weren't inside though, I was outside with Jamil when Kalim was talking to his parents"
And that was even more surprising but not dwelt on for long as the cars came to pick them up. Well, it wasn't cars, it was a car, a 15 meter long custom made limousine with massage chairs and fridges apparently.
"Jamil, can I sit next to you during the ride..?" The prefect semi-whispered to the Silk City boy.
"Hm? Oh yes.. sure, if you would really like to, I don't mind.", was his reply, though he sounded more enthusiastic than his quiet wording may suggest. So for their ride they did sit next to each other. Inky, in her comfortably listening to music fashion, slightly leaned on Jamil when the car went around a roundabout and didn't realise she was still leaning his way. And Jamil didn't care to move her since the slight weight didn't bother and she seemed comfortable, kind of like a sliver of that morning last week.
When they arrived at a park, the one with the tigress from, again, the other week, the others were even more impressed. At first it was by the beauty and then it was because it belonged to the Asims. They walked a while until they reached the Asim residence itself. Again, Cater and Trey, as well as Grim and somehow Malleus as well were sort of astonished. Though they did compare the roofs to turnips, onions and pumpkins, and Inky guessed it made enough sense. It was then suggested they go inside and Kalim dropped the bomb on them that he'd had traditional Scalding Sands clothing prepared for everyone in advance. That was a welcome surprise and now everyone was very excited, even Inky was. It showed in the pitch of her voice, as she did speak a little more. She may be on the quiet side but she had a lot of thoughts that she voiced when comfortable and appropriate.
Upon actually going in to change they were greeted by a huge ballroom and Cater immediately took Trey for a spin, though Trey was more just getting flung around slightly they both had fun. Malleus had a grand time watching but left to change first out of them all. Kalim was just outside keeping Grim company as Grim and him had no outfit to change into, as grim was too small and Kalim was to wear his dorm uniform. Back in the little ballroom Inky was watching Trey and Cater and she wanted to twirl around too, though she wasn't all that good at dancing as she'd never done it before. She didn't want to mess up in front of people she liked and thought were cool so she stood and watched with a very obvious expression on her face. After Trey and Cater left to change it was Jamil that cleared his throat next to her, which made her look over. He was holding out his hand for her to take.
She hesitated, "What if I step on your toes or fall?" But Jamil only shook his head at that.
"I don't mind. You.. do want to dance a little.. yes?" He attempted to reconfirm, wondering if he'd read her wrong and his offer was ridiculous, but his thoughts were interrupted when she did take his hand. He pulled her close, beginning to guide her slightly with light squeezes from his hands and vocal cues like which way to step. She was clumsy, but it was nice, and they were so close. She really enjoyed it all. So Inky smiled, right up at him when she had slightly gotten the hang of it enough to not have to look at her feet, only to find he was already looking at her with a small smile, a fond look. And that only made her smile more as they stilled and drew a little closer, blush spreading on Inky's cheeks. She couldn't hide it from Jamil. She didn't need to. Jamil drew closer, they were so very close until the steps of servants approaching echoed and Jamil withdrew, taking a step back but not letting go of her hand yet.
"We should.. we should change" he said in a quiet voice. He didn't want to, not yet when they had been so close. They were so close he could've- no, no he shouldn't think about that right now! He had to change!
"Y-yeah.. we should.." Inky responded, in a sort of disappointed tone. Was she hoping Jamil actually would..? No, can't be, not him. Sure she may still care for him and wasn't scared of him, but love him? After his Overblot? Absolutely not. No way. So begrudgingly they both separated to change into their respective new clothing.
The first to go back outside were Trey and Cater, followed by Malleus who all had only positive things to say about the outfits and their intricate patterning.
Next was Jamil, who had said he felt like he was truly feeling like he was home now that he could wear traditional clothing and he looked incredibly handsome. And then finally Inky emerged in her new attire, silently opening the door and slipping out, clearing her throat gently. "I'm done changing..!"
Inky came out in a more feminine version of what the others wore, silk and fabrics colored in deep blues and purples adorning her body, tied and wrapped to resemble a dress. The silken belt adorned with charms, tassels and bells drew attention to the natural waist, which was a nice detail as her usual clothing hid her more curvy figure. Another fabric was tied around her hips, small coins dangling from it, an intricate firework pattern weaved into the silk made it all the more beautiful. She wore the same type of petal-sleeve vests the guys wore, only smaller and slightly looser. If only to show off the silken tube-top she'd been given to wear underneath, also a deep blue. Under her skirt she was given a similar type of legging to the guys as well, only hers ended slightly higher, around mid-calf. Her shoes were slightly different, they had an actual t-strap to keep them in place and a small, comfortable heel. Anklets adorned her ankles much like the jewels adorning her golden wrist guards and hands. Her hair had been braided and put up nicely in a half up, half down do with the silk head wrap braided into it partly. Her makeup was done too, her eyelids shimmered and her lips were glossed, she looked stunning.
Jamil's eyes widened, this time he stared at her. He couldn't believe that she looked this gorgeous right now. Not that he didn't think she was pretty before but this, this was a whole new level. He was convinced the beautiful princess from the old tale of the Sorcerer of the sands had walked out of the estate. His heart beat out of his chest as the slightest hints of red rose to his cheeks as he absolutely struggled to keep his composure. He swallowed thickly, picking his jaw up off the floor when he noticed she was looking at him with a slightly flushed expression. To the untrained eye she was looking at the whole group but no, she was sort of.. staring at Jamil as well.
"Woah! Prefect! You look, like, totally gorge in that! It looks like it was made for you!" Cater commented, totally wowed by how much she looked like she belonged in those clothes.
"I was under the impression that they *were* made for us.. was I mistaken?" Malleus asked, to which Trey shook his head.
"What Cater means is that there was a lot of care and attention to detail on what would suit her was put into putting that outfit together. It's a compliment to the one who picked it and the one wearing it" He explained, to which Malleus nodded. And Kalim agreed, fangirling over how she looked right at home in those clothes.
"Right Jamil?" Kalim said at the end of his little rant, turning to Jamil who had not said a word. In truth the words were hardly registering in his head but he nodded, still taking in the sight in front of him.
Thanks to the others he was able to actually regain his composure and explain a few things like the history behind the bells on the clothing and how he'd feel more comfortable if he'd had to wear less bits and bobs but he was Kalim's staff and thus had to dress up a bit more.
Eventually they decided to take a photograph together, to give it to Lilia afterwards. Inky moved in with the others, taking her spot next to Jamil. Surprisingly their two outfits went rather well together, it looked like it was almost intended. They all looked wonderful together though.
After that came idle chatter and more surprised classmates as the Asim family had apparently over 10 treasuries, which was quite impressive. Turns out that was where Kalim had gotten his magic carpet, something that was about as valuable as a national treasure. A little later they separated from Kalim, going on their way so Jamil could play tour guide for the day.
The first thing they did was visit the venue for the festival, where Jamil told the legend of the festival. Apparently the princess had fallen in love with a, well, street rat, and that a genie had flooded the skies with lights that flickered and sparkled and burst into colours. The onlookers were so very impressed that they commemorated the day in a festival. In that moment Inky thought. She thought if the fireworks celebrated love between two people, would she have a shot at attending this festival as Jamil's lover one day? Such would be a wonderful dream, to kiss beneath the colourful night sky. She got so caught up in imagining that, she didn't realise Jamil was continuing to speak, or even that they were setting out to leave. It was only when Grim had run back quickly after the group had advanced in their walk slightly she was made aware that they were leaving.
"What was that about prefect?" Cater asked when they were together again. While the prefect did answer, Inky looked sort of flustered about it.
"I have ADD-Daydreaming-Syndrome, sometimes I just fade out and daydream, it can be triggered by a train of thought or just happen randomly. The issue is I can't snap myself out of it and I only know it happened after the fact. Sorry.. it's weird I know." She explained, slightly looking at the floor with pink cheeks.
"No no! It's totally cool! Just didn't know you had it, prefect! Thought something was wrong there for a second..!" Cater said. It was then that they arrived at Camel bazaar, a market full of food stalls and beautiful objects and clothing, it was colourful and it all looked very amazing. Apparently it was busier than usual, so there'd be a high chance to find many nice yet unusual things that day.

At the Camel Bazaar Grim managed to sniff out a Shawarma stall and also managed to convince everyone to order. Six different orders, all accustomed to everyone's preferences and still Jamil could remember them and give them to the stall owner. Both Cater and Inky found that absolutely amazing, but Inky found Jamil amazing on a different level than Cater.
When their food arrived however, one seemed to be missing. Jamil's. Everyone accused Grim at first but he was obviously not it, because somehow his counter argument made enough sense. "I could have stolen the whole spit of meat if I was going to steal anything!" Or something like that, at least.
It was then discovered that a young woman, slightly younger than Jamil, maybe by a year or two, had swiped it. Her appearance sent Jamil into a sputter as it came to light she was his younger sister, Najma. The group was theorising over what was causing Jamil to loose his composure but really it wasn't because he was embarrassed, he just didn't want his younger sister to find him with.. well, his crush, NOT THAT THAT'S WHAT INKY WAS TO HIM!! Absolutely not! He just didn't know another word for it! Yeah that's it! And to top it off Najma inserted herself into the group via Cater suggesting she join them after hearing how her plans got cancelled after Mr Viper had sent her out to tell Jamil about the change in seating, though this was because their father did not quite understand phones and technology all too well. Of course, that made Cater give Najma the rundown of the group after Jamil had been unwillingly coerced into letting his sister join. Everyone else got a turn and then it was time to introduce the prefect.
"And this lovely lady is the prefect, Inky! She's super sweet and the school would probably go up in flames without her! Get this: she's actually real cammable! And her outfit today is an easy 100/10!" He said, and of course, that flattered Inky, although she didn't really fully believe that. Actually the part about the school was probably true but the rest was a little odd to her. She did try to be sweet though. It was then that Najma noticed her as Jamil had sort of stood in the way, which was totally on purpose. Najma inspected Inky a bit, noticing her brother was looking at her as well, trying to keep a stoic expression. But there was just something in his eyes that felt different, new, more.. affectionate even. And then she realised. The pretty little lady had stolen her big brother's heart and he was more than slightly in absolute denial.
"And that's the short n sweet on our little group!" Cater finished.
"Wow, honestly I'm surprised my brother has this many friends! He never mentions anyone when he comes home over the holidays!" Najma said, which made Jamil respond in a slightly agitated manner.
"They're not my friends, they are schoolmates, that's all." To which Najma ghasped in exaggerated shock, worming herself through the group to behind Inky, gripping her shoulders. Which, Inky seemed slightly hurt by what Jamil had said, though he didn't intend to make her feel that way.
"You can't tell me this little cutie of a girl you brought is *just a schoolmate*" Najma said, continuing to feign shock to tease her brother.
"Well- no, she's not just a schoolmate. She's.. a close friend. Had I the time to say anything I would have but for today I am busy." He answered, trying once again to avoid the truth. It was then Najma had a sort of lightbulb moment. She had never been more glad to be his sister and to understand what he meant by that.
"Jamil Viper..! تم اس کے ساتھ چھپ کر چھیڑ چھاڑ کرنا چاہتے تھے..!"
She said, a smug grin now plastered on her face. Her brother was making googly eyes at a girl and was trying *so hard* to hide it that it was almost hilarious!
"No! آپ چیزوں کا تصور کر رہے ہیں!"
Jamil said, almost a little too quickly. He felt immensely glad that his friends did not understand a lick of Urdu right then. Even if the little sad look on Inky's face earlier did kind of plague him. But it's not like she was his crush! He just didn't have another word! Sure she was absolutely breathtaking in her current attire, not just that, anything really and she was so sweet and- you know what? Nevermind! What mattered was that Jamil was most definitely not crushing on her and his sister was just trying to tease him!
His sister gave one last and incredibly unconvinced "yeah sure Jamil, whatever you say...~", before everyone had finished their food, save Inky, who was still holding half of hers. Odd but maybe she wasn't all that hungry yet.
One way or another the conversation drifted to a fruit vendor who was selling many high quality fruits. The group then learned that fruit grown here was high quality due to a special irrigation method since water was scarce back in the day. Malleus also learned what a dragon fruit was and Najma bought some and drizzled it with honey for the group to try.
Another mentionable fruit was the so-called silky melon, a Silk City specialty known for its taste and texture.
"It's said that sharing these with someone will make your friendship or romance last forever." Jamil explained. He couldn't help the way his eyes wandered over to her, to Inky. Would she share a melon with him? He hoped she would. He bought some for the group, himself included. Though he was surprised when Inky refused a portion. Did she not want to be tied to the group, or even him? Was it him? He had to know, so he asked her why she wouldn't take her portion, then again she didn't finish her shawarma either.
"I don't like melons much. In my home they are popular too, a summer treat but I just find it tastes.. weird. So while I would try a piece.. a whole portion would likely be wasted on me." Was her reasoning. She was eyeing Jamil's portion though. He waited until everyone was distracted with their melon bits until he turned to her again, holding out to her one of the smallest pieces from his little pile. And she did take it. Despite what she said about not liking melons she ate it. Jamil didn't know why, but she knew. It was because it was Jamil that offered, ever considerate a small piece. But they shared. And that's what mattered to them both. Cater wanted to take another picture.. but no one except Inky was down for it and she didn't have a melon so no pic for poor Cater.
They tried bread next, which made a story of little Jamil come to light. Apparently he loved to make bread when he was younger and his sister tried it once. That one didn't go so well so Jamil made Hamburger steak out of what was left. After that they saw some urns and vases at a stall, where Grim did, in fact, fall into one. Najma chose that moment to reveal that Jamil had hidden in one as a kid and scared the daylights out of his sister as her tried to leave with it in a very Link hiding in a barrel fashion. It embarrassed Jamil to no end but Inky was giggling at least.
Since it had gotten hot now they settled on going to get some coconut water. Turns out that Kalim drank it by the truckload and the Malleus Draconia cracked the empty coco-fruits for everyone to enjoy. You know, like a glorified nutcracker. No one was gonna believe that. After that, they wandered and found a stall that sold, among other things, dates! The vendor recognised Jamil and began to coerce a story out of him. The one that explained his seething hatred and fear of bugs. He'd burnt down an entire awning of the stall trying to get the bug away, but he was a child and the control he had over his magic at the time was most definitely not that great. Apparently he was crying too, according to the stall owner. But that didn't matter much because right in the next moment it was Inky that shrieked and jumped at Jamil, seemingly out of nowhere. It happened quickly enough that Jamil barely managed to stay standing and it alerted the whole group. But still, Jamil held her up as she clung to him, not daring to put her feet on the floor. Unfortunately no one in the group could tell what happened until about half a minute later when Inky lifted her head to sniffle as she slowly put her feet back on the floor.
"S-sorry..!" She stuttered out, drying her tears as best she could before she actually started to cry. "a big s-spider was crawling up my leg and I p-panicked..!"
The prefect was not scared of a lot of things, but spiders, specifically large ones? That did her in. It had the whole group scanning the floor but at least nothing was on fire. Jamil was trying to calm her down a little too, offered her a date, which she gladly took, no matter how much Jamil disliked the fruit. After that whole mess Inky held on to Jamil's sleeve for a bit. But they walked past a toy stall, so upon Grim's request Inky did actually buy a game.
Najma left shortly after to meet with her friends, not before giving Jamil another teasing look about the girl that he was absolutely head over heels for. Unfortunately that was suddenly unimportant as Malleus had somehow managed to disappear right then and there. Somehow Jamil seemed a bit too calm as he led the group to Zahab Market. Turns out those neat little bells on everyone's outfit, right? Those cute things? GPS trackers. Not only that but Kalim showed up, since he'd finished early and wanted to join the group a while, with permission of course. A bit of conversing later and it was decided that they would all go look for souvenirs to bring home from the trip, though it was likely that Inky would really only look rather than buy.
After everyone finished and they moved on Grim had somehow gotten his heart set on coffee divination. Turns out Jamil knew the basics as Najma was into it, this Grim could happily try. And for once, Inky wanted to as well, if only to try the coffee. Grim had swallowed the grounds, unfortunately, however Inky had been careful not to, so Jamil could read her fortune. He took a few looks and blinked.
"A J, which refers to love as well as a 1, the start of something new, a romantic relationship perhaps.. as well as.." he leaned in slightly closer "a 6.. for.. intimacy" he said to her, hoping he'd made his point come across and by the looks of those slightly rosy cheeks, he did. He said a few more minor things but that was about it. Those first 3 were the most important to Inky, for obvious reasons.
They kept walking and a little while later as everyone dispersed for a few more moments Inky was looking at jewelry. Waist beads to be specific. She'd always been fond of them and wanted to try them, too bad they were just slightly out of their tight budget, so they turned to the others to learn what they'd gotten instead. And while that went on, Jamil disappeared for only a moment, only to come back with seemingly nothing. But who knows how true that was.
More time passed as the sun set and they ran into the chief pyrotechnician, who struck up a friendly conversation, only to realise he'd been stolen from! Not only that, someone tried to snag Inky's poor old phone! Well, not someone, a monkey they'd seen earlier, that performed tricks. Malleus suggested using magic to stop the creature but that was quickly passed up on in favour of Jamil's plan, which, although it ended in Jamil fighting the man who owned the monkey, went well. Considering it was a great way for Jamil to blow off steam, of course it went swimmingly. Gently brushing the dirt off him, Inky congratulated him with a smile as the police went and took care of the crook, who regretted his life choices. The show was on!
Once they reached the venue and everyone had gotten a mint lemonade, which was very tasty, they waited. It was then that the pyrotechnician from earlier had come back, offering Jamil the chance to set off the firework festival's finale. He needed a lot of convincing but eventually agreed to do so, perhaps it was everyone's encouragement or their smiles.
Kalim was the one that asked everyone their opinions of the day, and they all had lovely things to say. "I loved it, I can't believe there's a place this amazing out here. Makes me wish I'd lived here all my life, maybe I would've met you guys sooner..!" Inky chuckled to herself, being the last one to say anything. The fireworks started and music played as everyone got roped into dancing, though Inky simply swayed a little to the beat, not far from Jamil, who took the chance and danced with her, once again for a little while, instructing and guiding her along the way, not taking his eyes off her and her bright smile for even a moment. When it came time however he gave the cue for the final fireworks. His heart raced as he looked at all his friends and then at Inky, who was standing there amazed and wide eyed, the biggest smile on her face. He stepped closer, slightly out of breath.
"Was.. was the timing right? Did I do it? How did.. how did everything look?" He said, turning to face the night sky, lit with blooming colours and bright lights, like stars or flowers that blossomed. Everyone was enamoured by the performance of the carefully organised spectacle. Even he allowed himself a brief moment of distraction until he felt a hand on his shoulder and something soft on his cheek. he looked to his side, seeing a flushed Inky look at him from the corner of her eyes as she pretended to enjoy the fireworks rather than stare at him. He grinned, a smile on his lips as his own cheeks grew hot. He couldn't help but intertwine their fingers and hold her hand in that moment. It was pure bliss. Alright. Maybe he did have a crush on her. Maybe he loved her even. Who could say? Jamil certainly couldn't. But he could say for certain he had fallen. And maybe that was okay this time.

It had been a few days since the fireworks festival. A few days since Jamil's oh so shocking revelation. Since he realised he was crushing on the prefect, on Inky. Honestly, he never expected to fall for anyone, which was why he was slightly at a loss when speaking to her. He just doesn't know what to say to her sometimes, and he's been spacing out during his tasks. Nothing major of course, and only luckily in moments where his body had the movements down well enough that he could do them subconsciously. Even right now when he should be sleeping he was thinking about her. He really couldn't help it. But. He had to. He was not a free man. He'd surely have to surrender her to Kalim, but surely he couldn't take her, right? Well. He could, all Kalim would have to do is say the word. And Jamil was not ready to risk that, if anything he'd want her all to himself, by that he meant no risk of having to give her up and lose her to someone else.
Jamil should sleep, he really should, it's getting rather late. How much time did he spend thinking instead of sleeping? Though if he slept now he'd probably dream of her. How they'd dance together, how he'd hold her and perhaps even kiss her, from her knuckles up to her lips only to rest his head on hers and keep her by his side. The thought alone made his heart flutter, so much so that he could no longer try to sleep. Well.. it was late and no one should be awake.. alright. He picked up his phone off the charger and took his headphones with him. He pulled a hoodie over his head, he'd leave his sweatpants on. Speaking of, wasn't that the pair he'd lent Inky a while back? She must've put it in the laundry for him.
He began walking, out of the main building through the desert, it was chilly out, but warm enough. Just warm enough that he could go without a jacket or similar. A little bit away from the building he stopped, taking in his surroundings before nodding to himself and picking a song. Jamil had to get his feelings out, so dance it was.
Unsurprisingly this became a more regular occurrence, getting more frequent the more he learned about the prefect, her love for things and her dreams. Her wishes and her quirks. When he couldn't sleep because his heart ached and longed for her love, he'd go dance, if all was quiet of course. One night however, after just arriving back in his room and getting situated a knock sounded from his door again. Who was knocking? At this hour?
With more than reluctance he opened his door, pinching the bridge of his nose and sighing deeply.
"Who wants some-", he stopped speaking mid sentence as he saw who it was. Inky. And she looked shaken.. no pun intended, as she was actually shaking. She looked at Jamil with tears in her eyes, others rolling down her cheeks. She could barely croak out a sorry for him. At least that ruled out the meltdown, but still. Jamil felt his chest tighten as he let her into his room. She sniffled and sobbed, trying her best to not cry as much.
"Inky, قیمتی, what happened? Are you in pain?" Jamil asked her, not even realising what he'd just called her, precious. He'd thank the language barrier later, he was relieved that there was nothing painful making Inky cry first, as she shook her head.
"'m sor-ry..! 's stu- stupid.." She muttered weekly, before Jamil patted her head, stepping closer and taking one of her hands for a moment.
"Nothing is stupid. Not when it has you crying. Now please, tell me what brought you to tears.." He told her as she raised her head to look at him. She sniffled, taking him in her arms instead at first and squeezing very gently, listening to his heartbeat.
"I.. I had.." She started but got interrupted by her shaking breathing. "I had a dream..! A-and- and you.. I didn't save you.. you d-died in my ar-.. arms.." Inky stuttered. Jamil's eyes widened thanks to that, putting his arms around her properly, brushing a hand in circles gently on her back. She appreciated it, that she could hold him.
"Luckily it was a dream. I'm here. And I'm alive. My heart, can you hear it?" He whispered gently, a rhetorical question. He knew she could hear it, if the harsh pounding in his chest was any indication. Still she nodded against his torso, holding onto him tighter as she felt her knees buckling. He noticed and he held her up, his one hand going down to her thigh, a silent signal for her, so that he knew he'd pick her up. She understood, luckily, as he moved her to his bed and sat her down. He moved behind her after giving her a juice pack he'd started keeping in his room. While she drank and tried to calm herself, he treaded his fingers through her curly hair. It helped massively. A little while later she finally stopped crying.
"Jamil..?" Inky said, barely whispering. She was lucky it was this quiet. "Thank you.. again.. you're a wonderful guy.."
It was quiet before Jamil spoke up. He may have nodded in acknowledgement of her previous statement but as she moved to get up his hand moved quicker than his mind could process, holding onto her shirt for a moment.
"Stay," he muttered, which caused her to look back. "Stay here.. until tomorrow.. please..?" He asked her as she simply looked at him for a moment, surprised by his boldness, a bit of pink dusting her cheeks now. But she didn't say no. In fact, after putting the joice box that she emptied on the floor temporarily, she nodded.
"Can I? Because I'd like to.."
"Yes.", he confirmed one last time, "please, stay." Because for tonight he could hold her. He could keep her close as he wished. And not have to let go til morning.

Even though he slept less than usual Jamil felt strangely energetic today. Perhaps it was because he'd slept the best he had in a while or straight up because he woke up next to Inky. It was such a simple thing but he'd be lying if he didn't wish it would happen more, just because of how nice it felt. Is it bad he wished the prefect would have more nightmares only so he could hold her..? Probably. But as it stood, this was the only way he was able to act on his own feelings. Not like he didn't know Inky had feelings for him before his Overblot but he doubted it was love, now that he'd done what he did. Still he hopes and dreams as he stirred the non-proverbial pot of curry in front of him. It was one of the dishes he was making for lunch. He was making something else for Kalim, of course, as Kalim obviously didn't like curry.. but Jamil and Inky could have it, especially since the prefect did say one time she really wanted to eat something Jamil made and admitted in the same sentence that they've been looking to try more foreign food like different curries. Also in that sentence they said that anything Jamil made would be more than satisfactory though.
At the same time that day Kalim was at a housewarden meeting, simply to discuss the future event that would be held soon. The National Arcane Academy Cultural Fair. It was a yearly event mostly consisting of artistic type events like poetry slams, research presentations and, the most well known part of it all, the SDC. The SDC, or Song & Dance Championship, was a contest for singers and dancers, basically any musical talent, to go up on stage, by themselves or in a group, and show their aforementioned talent to the world to show who was the best of the participants that year. The winners would get not only a monetary prize but also a ticket to stardom. Of course that ticket to stardom wasn't exclusive to first place but they had the best chance.
Riddle, who was head of the planning committee was rambling on and on about the details but the report was necessary. Turns out both Vil Schönheit and Neige LeBlanche would be participating this year as well, which meant extra press coverage for the school. Crowley was delighted about this of course and put up audition posters through negotiation with Vil that very same day. They were plastered all over a few notice boards, especially the one in the cafeteria. By lunchtime it was surrounded by people, which had sent Ace, Deuce and Grim to check it out. Inky stayed seated with Jamil and Kalim, though the occasional glance was thrown their way, since she was pally with Kalim as well as Jamil, who had literally tried to off them over the winter holidays that ended recently. Not that Inky really cared.
Unfortunately she did have to tear herself away from the Scarabian duo as she had class duty along with Deuce for the upcoming alchemy lesson and Ace was tagging along to chat. Speaking of Kalim and Jamil, that was where the conversation drifted, though grim did most of the talking.
"Seriously, first he tries to manipulate and kill you and now you're friends? Kinda weird if you ask me" Ace commented.
"Don't call my hench-human weird! Besides, it's not like he hasn't apologized and more. He's been taking care of me and Inky very well, Kalim also..! I think my henchman and I can decide who we, mostly I as a great mage, will spend our time with!"
"Thank you Grim.. I think that gets the point across. Besides.. Jamil is really nice to me, I like him a lot" The two half-students said, one confirming the other.
"What, you're still crushing on the guy? How? He literally gave you a massive scar on your arm, he could have ended you..!" Ace once again protested.
"And again, he apologized."
"You believe that?"
"Yes and you know next to nothing about him so I won't be hearing another word out of you about this..!" The prefect said, anger lacing into her stern tone, sending ace a small glare.
"Alright alright, I'll shut up" He said, though not happy about it. Before their conversation continued though, they were promptly distracted by singing.
"Who's singing? It sounds really nice" Deuce said as they listened, right after though, the singer seemed to choke up on their own voice, which sounded less than healthy. So, with slight concern, the group closed in on where the sounds were coming from, the well in the school courtyard.
Upon approach they met another first year, his name was Epel Felmier. He had lavender hair and blue eyes, his stature was small and skinny but well balanced, his skin was pale too and he spoke in a generally soft voice, unless some sort of accent came out that Inky personally could not place. All went well until they were interrupted by the Pomefiore housewarden Vil Schönheit. He had a regal presence, something like a king or queen in a sense that he was confident and knowledgeable in a few areas. Basically a perfect upperclassman if it weren't for his temper at that moment. Vil was upset that Epel was not training so he wanted to move Epel somewhere else so he wouldn't get interrupted. This went over wrong with Ace as well as Deuce as they misinterpreted Vil's tone and words. The fight that ensued wasn't even that long as Vil was vastly better at his magic than those two unfortunate souls.
The end result was an utter defeat which gave Vil the opportunity to leave with the lavender haired boy. Though not before the latter waved goodbye to Inky as she ushered Ace and Deuce up on their feet to clean themselves up and check for scrapes. She did wave back though. They went to Professor Crewel's lab and classroom, setting up the next lesson with the instruction of the teacher. In the midst of this, another student came in.
This girl was pale as can be and her hair was back length and white. She was rather short as well.
"Hello professor Crewel! I'm here to deliver those late project papers you asked me to go get" Her voice rang through the room as she grinned in a friendly way, waving to the first year trio that was setting up.
"Poor guy was really under the weather, caught a stomach bug or something but he'll be fine. He's over the worst of it according to the nurse, he needs a day or two to recover properly."
"Good girl, thank you for informing me. You have a free period now, yes? Why don't you sit in on the first years and help out? I could use a helping hand to whip these bumbling pups into shape and you're on the school's student tutoring program, so you'd be a good fit." Crewel said, to which the pretty student agreed as he explained what they would be doing during the class period.
It gave Inky the ability to look at her a little more closely. She had facial piercings and some on her ears. The ones on her face were a septum and a lip ring as far as Inky could tell. She didn't wear a blazer, had her sleeves rolled up and her purple vest was open. She wore her white blouse tied up in a way that it would expose her stomach, though not in a war that was inappropriate. She wore a shorter skirt variant at her hips that ended above her knees and flip flops as her footwear. It left a lot of questions as to how she wasn't cold. Then again it wasn't too cold, simply chilly.. she dressed like it was summer though. She had jewelry too, a few rings, a choker and a necklace, an anklet, two bracelets and on her other arm she wore her Pomefiore Armband, except she had it tied more around her wrist than anything, like another bracelet.
That lesson was over quickly, and it was fairly nice. Turns out the student's name was Alani and she helped out around the classroom after having changed into appropriate gear. She was a Pomefiore third year apparently and had heard about the prefect from Leona, whom she visited during spelldrive practice after school occasionally so she could exercise with them. She was good at explaining things and this included her clothing. Apparently she was dressed the way she was because it was usually hot or at least warm here compared to her homeland, which was very far up north. In conclusion the lesson was lovely and after all the cleanup the prefect even managed to get Alani's number, for emergencies or if Inky ever really needed or wanted something.
The rest of the school day went off without a hitch as well, only really starting to pick up the pace when ace and Deuce along with grim decided they would contact this 'Rook' character to get an audition appointment.

That afternoon they unfortunately couldn’t find Rook before club activities started, mostly because Ace didn’t have the time to search all day, since there was a practice game scheduled for the basketball club that day. He invited Inky to join since they weren’t in a club and would likely only be bored out of her mind with Grim doing his own thing at Scarabia for now. They agreed of course, because they could cheer for Ace as well as watch Jamil play.
The game itself was against one of the local basketball teams, sage island had a few as it turns out, though most were simply hobby type teams, but this one was from the small college in the middle for the magicless residents of the island.
Ace hurried to the changing room so he would not be late as Inky helped set up before everyone arrived, though that was mostly clearing out the sports mat wagon as well as making sure the balls for everyone’s warmups and the game itself were all properly inflated. That and ace brought his music box with him this time.
“Heads up guys, I invited- the prefect to come watch..!” Ace said as he pulled the basketball jersey over his head, allowing a brief pause so his voice wouldn’t be muffled by fabric.
“Really? Yay, leafy sea-dragon! I’m gonna squeeze it when I get out!” Floyd grinned mischievously. Leafy sea-dragon had somehow become the prefects new nickname. Where it came from? Their underwater hair reminded him of the tendrils of, you guessed it, a leafy sea-dragon. Despite the incident in Octavinelle nearly accidentally turning the school’s ‘beloved’ prefect into past tense, it was not blamed on the octatrio. The breathing potion she had been given wound up wearing off too early due to not being of this world. Azul has generously apologised for this and has taken a few measures to show that he is actually sorry for miscalculating and not realising that the potion may work differently. You know, like providing proper lunches and a good table to study at when needed.
All that aside Floyd was now luckily excited for the basketball match, unlike before which Jamil, who’d been oddly quiet this whole time, had noted.
Why was he quiet? Because suddenly he felt.. nervous. Not like usual before any other basketball match, nervous in an energising but also almost anxious way. This wasn’t a major match, just practice. So why? Was it because.. Inky would be watching him? An image flashed across his mind of them wearing his jersey weeks back when they came to Scarabia for the first time since the winter holidays. ‘میں حیران ہوں کہ اس کا دن کیسا گزر رہا ہے۔’ he thought. ‘کیا وہ اپنی کلاسوں سے لطف اندوز ہوئی؟ کیا گریم نے اس کی پریشانی کا سبب بنایا؟’, well even if Grim did, surely she’s fine. Either way, Jamil pulled the red sleeve he wore with his jersey over his elbow. He had to focus. Perhaps if he did, he’d impress them, the object of his affection. It would surely then make him appear cooler, more desirable in their eyes. And that was what he wanted. Besides, he was looking forward to the game already anyway, who wouldn’t? There aren’t many basketball teams on the island, so getting to play against one another was a wonderful way to improve your own skill and test your team’s overall ability to work together.
They left to the court they were using after they all finished changing. The team would get there soon so for now it was warmups so they could play comfortably. After a thorough 20 minutes of ‘casual warm up exercises’ courtesy of coach Vargas (and a bone crushing hug by Floyd for Inky) the other team arrived, so Floyd, Jamil, Ace and the others could finish up. While they did Jamil noticed that the enemy captain was chatting up the prefect, and he noticed that they seemed to look mostly anywhere but that captain, more specifically his face, while the captain was trying to gently get her to do that.
Finally then the coach let him and the others off the hook so the other team could warm up. Leisurely Jamil jogged over to the prefect who had stood up to help hand out a water bottle to anyone who needed it.
“Thanks” he said to her. “Did Floyd crush you too much earlier?”
“No, it was nice, fixed an issue I had with my back, actually..” Inky answered, no longer avoiding eye contact and looking straight at him. It surprised Jamil because he never realised just how obvious the prefect was, when it came to looking at people when speaking.
“An issue with your back?”
“Yeah, my back tends to need cracking a lot because of posture and whatever else and I have difficulty doing it myself. Also my trapezoids are still swollen because of strain so my back and that area hurts easily. I’ll book a massage appointment one day, have to be able to afford it first though.” Oh yeah, Crowley still pays the prefect in air particles.. that needs to be fixed, maybe Jamil should talk to Kalim or the headmage directly. In the mean time though, he can do something else.
“If you would like, I could massage your back later, after the game.. I might have time as far as I know”
“Sure, but first I think we’ll both need a bath or something.. don’t know how long I’ll take though”
“Scarabia does have a large communal bath.. do you have a bathing suit? You could take a shower in the shower stations to rinse off and then I’ll join you.. in swim trunks of course. The warm warmer can help relax your muscles properly and the bath itself is quite pleasant.” He suggested. It took him a minute to truly register what he’d said to the prefect, to which he’d almost made a face, but it wouldn’t have been one of disgust, rather it would have been one of surprise since he’d offered that without thinking, so he wasn’t sure if Inky would say yes or if he’d overstepped by accident.
“I do, only a school issued one that Crowley ‘oh so graciously’ paid for.. but yeah that sounds amazing actually. Wait, won’t that be more work for you?” She asked, though was that just Jamil sort was she starting to blush? Then again.. he is a guy and even if they’d be wearing swim gear he did just offer to bathe with her. Wait. She agreed. So.. that means he’d actually get to be that close and enjoy Inky’s company in actual peace and quiet. Kalim would be busy later that day with his own stuff and he could luckily be left unsupervised since Jamil would be in the dorm at least.
A bit after that it was time for the game and now the ‘enemy’ team was struggling to avoid Floyd and his passes, it felt more like he was trying to shoot them with the ball rather than hoops and Jamil was really going for it today. They couldn’t get past them and even if they did, scoring was even harder to do. Even if Ace was the most approachable one, if they got past him, they had to avoid Floyd and then get around Jamil. Though she wasn’t at all interested in sports back in her home world, she didn’t mind attending games and the like for her friends. And if, this time, she got an amazing excuse to stare at her crush, why say no to that? All in all they were crushing it anyway and this game in particular was much more interesting to watch than any at home.
Naturally the club won the game but still their victory was worth cheering for. It showed they were a good team despite Floyd’s mood swings, learning to work with instead of against them. After all of that Jamil and the others bid farewell to the team and went to their changing rooms, to rinse off and the like.
“Oi sea snake, saw you chatting with leafy after warm ups, you trying to flirt?~” Floyd smirked, clearly just trying to get under Jamil’s skin.
“No.”, he denied, maybe a bit too quickly to be convincing. “I was worried you had hurt their back when you nearly crushed them in that hug of yours..”
“True, that’s always that but, like, your conversation was a liiittle too long for just that” Ace suddenly spoke up from behind them.
“Well, the prefect mentioned that their back hurts easily and that their muscles are always tense, so I offered to massage them”
“You know how to massage things too? Jeeze, what *don’t* you know how to do? You’re like.. insane or something! I mean, you can cook and clean, you’re good in school, basketball.. and now it turns out you’re a masseuse too? Man.. I thought Inky was exaggerating when it said you were that amazing..” Ace said in slight shock, not realising he’d actually blurted that out.
“One of Kalim’s siblings has chronic pain, so all servants were required to learn it. In any case.. Inky said what?”
“She said- wait uhh.. actually I’m not supposed to say anything so forget I mentioned that, yeah?? Good, great, amazing.. gotta go!” Ace sputtered, if the prefect knew he said anything at all about what it said about Jamil, it would be a lot worse than running out with his shirt half way pulled over his head. So that’s what he did. And that made Jamil look at the door with a surprised expression, the prefect didn’t want him to know what she said about him? But why? From what ace said it was positive things, so was Inky hiding something? Was this about the letters? He’d have to ask.
Back at Scarabia he was in his room fishing out his swim trunks from his closet. It had been a while so they weren’t at the front, but the back instead. He made his way over to the bathing area, knocking firmly and rather loudly on the door in case the prefect was still showering, but they told him through the door he could come in. He did, shutting the door behind himself, locking it too, so that no one could come in, even if he spread the word this place would be occupied for a while. Only then did he look at the prefect. Truth be told he was a bit surprised at their hair, it was somehow curlier now than it usually was, it looked very pretty, it suited her. She waved at him, but was that just Jamil‘s imagination, or was she.. staring at him?
Oh yeah, she most definitely was. But he was too. Even if it was a school issue, it’s not every day you see the person you like in swimwear and Jamil thought she looked good anyway.
He guided her to the warm water spouting from overly fancy vases held up by statues of women, modelled after those in the Twisted Wonderland equivalent of Greece. It was far too fancy for his liking but this was built in reference to Aljah’s bath back at home, the sibling he mentioned to Ace and Floyd. Sweet kid, they were friends with his sister apparently and very into Greek mythology and the like at the moment.. well they had been for years but what gives, today and especially right now there’s no need to be specific. As they sat he checked in on them and how Inky felt about the temperature, was it good? Or too warm? Cold? He breathed out and sort of let himself relax when she told him it was fine, moving her legs underwater to enjoy the sensation.
“I thought.. you know.. at the game today, I thought you looked really cool. I don’t like sports and I’m not really into them either, but I liked watching you play.. I think you know, but I do admire you a lot- uhm visually and because you’re amazing.. not sure you know how much but I think you might.. well I think you might’ve read a ‘letter’ I lost. Kalim came to me by the way, he was worried because a you were in your room all the time.”, The prefect confessed, scooting closer to and leaning on Jamil slightly, resting her head on his shoulder. They sighed, more-so to express their comfort right then and their enjoyment in Jamil’s company, though their voice changed with a laugh. “Gonna be honest here I thought you hated my guts after your Overblot.. I’ve never been happier to be wrong in my life. Thanks for the towel when you picked me up that day.. and the party situation too.” Another pause followed after it breathed in and out, coming just that little bit closer. “I’m glad you’re here with me”
Those words touched his heart, set it ablaze all over again as he put his arm around her shoulder, holding her there in his embrace but not too tightly, resting his head on hers and taking a breath. “I’m glad you’re here with me too.”
In the silent chamber a creak echoed, all was quiet and unmoving until… a coffin opened itself from the inside and out poked a head, the long face bore a confused and startled expression, maybe even scared. A brief look around told them they were not where they were supposed to be and they did not care to find out any more than that. “..Oh hell no..”, they spoke before retreating into their coffin, pulling it closed once more.

Fresh Spring air sure was delightful on a comfortably warm sunny day. Inky yawned, they couldn't sleep the night before, for no particular reason. She looked around at the fields she'd just finished maintaining. They were small, but big enough to produce food for two and sell a bit. She looked down at her dirt covered hands and smiled, moving to the hose to water the crop growing there right then.
It was all so peaceful now. Life was basically what she wanted since she could think for herself. Living on a farm and being self sufficient with someone they loved that is. And that someone was Jamil. Now you might be thinking something like shouldn't he be serving the Asim family or something like that, but no. What happened was that, with a bit of help from Kalim, bless him, both Inky and Jamil ran away to a small farm in the countryside of pyroxene. Was it easy to convince Jamil? Absolutely not. But he was happy now. And they had time for days off, for holidays, for trips. Kalim still supported them financially a bit. As a thank you for Jamil's years of service and friendship and an apology for not exactly being easy most of the time, since Kalim could cause a lot of work for Jamil. Inky washed the loose dirt off her hands with the running water, wiping their hands on a cloth they had attached to their belt.
The beloved man of the house was hanging laundry at the moment, since he was much more adept at household chores than Inky was. He didn't pay much mind to the footsteps he heard approaching, he knew that step pattern well after all and maybe that was because it was his favourite to hear, because it would mean he'd get to see the one he more than adored. He didn't expect a pair of arms do wrap around him though.
"Good morning, you all done in the field?" Jamil asked.
"Mhm..~" Inky nodded mostly into his back, "all done.. now I can look after the chickens.. and then.. I don't know what then.. can we take a nap later? I want to cuddle but I'm tired."
She could feel his chuckle and see his grin, but it wasn't malicious at all. He nodded, laying a hand on one of her's.
"Sure, Meri Jaan, we can cuddle.. but you have to go take care of the chickens first, I'll finish the laundry in the meantime, alright?" He told them, to which he felt them nod into his back again. The two stayed like that before separating. Someone had to finish the work they had for the day after all. And once that was done, they could afford to be lazy in one another's arms together. Maybe they could take a walk later too. Yeah. This was the life that felt right, perfect even, for the two of them.

nah bc like. i was planning on drawing yuusha anyway but like. i finally saw her ref sheet. and the hairstyle 2.0 got my ass. DID NOT EXPECT THAT AT ALL, LIKE IM OBSESSED W IT SHE LOOKS SO SHARP.
it was just so different from the long braid she has. her head must feel super light now. and it must be so much easier to wash her hair (less shampoo and conditioner, yeahhh saving money‼️‼️ deffo needed for the ramshackle prefect tm)
anyways i imagine this is what jamil felt seeing her haircut for the first time (unless he cut it, which like, is cute too. either way he’s shocked she looks so good with shorter hair)
