Can be a mixture of fluffy , angsty and smutty😊

Pairing: Kate Lethbridge-Stewart x fem!Reader
Word Count: 4223
Warning: 18+, oral sex
Summary: When you drive to Scotland with Kate and spend the night in a pub where a guy hits on you something in your relationship finally shifts.

A/n: So it's just a hint of the one-bed trope and more of a shared proximity. I also sprinkled a bit of pretend/fake relationship in there. I hope it's what you had envisioned!!! It's a bit longer than I had planned, hence why it took a bit longer. @freshmoneyalmondathlete <3 It's also my first time writing for Kate, so I hope it not totally off-character. I would love a repost, like, or comment <3
■----------------------------------------■
It had been months. Months since this strange sort of dance had started. You both knew there was something, but no one acknowledged it and work was way too time-consuming and hectic to talk about it.
You’d been working for UNIT for some time now, having started there as an exited young scientist just finding out about the wonders of the Universe. And you were good at your job, which helped you quickly work your way up into a bit of a lore important position. You still did mostly lab work, and that was a part you’d never give up. But it was nice to be recognised for your hard work and to be given more responsibility.
More and more often you were right in the middle of the action. A trusted consultant for Kate when hell went loose, and it felt good. To know your opinion was valued by the boss herself. But it was more than that. You admired her, no question about it. What she does and the way she worked for it couldn’t be described as anything else than admirable. But you also couldn’t keep your eyes off her when you were in the same room. She took your breath away in all her smart pantsuits and high heels.
And whether Kate knew about it or she felt similarly, there’d been a sort of charged air around the two of you right from the beginning. It wasn’t unknown for the two of you to flirt even, or maybe especially in life-threatening situations. A way of staying grounded, keeping some light-heartedness to the job was all you could do to stay sane.
You obviously cared for each other immensely, but no one dared to make a step forward. And whenever you thought you’d ask her out something happened. Cybermen came, the earth was nearly invaded, the Doctor showed up. It felt like the Universe itself was against you. At least until now.
Your hard work had led to Kate taking you with her to a call they’d gotten up in Scotland. Someone had apparently seen something that could be connected to a scientifically unexplained phenomenon that Osgood had picked up upon a few days ago. It needed to be looked at and that’s how you found yourself in the passenger seat of a UNIT vehicle next to Kate on the way up to Scotland. It was cold outside. And considering it was November and you were driving up north, that was not surprising. You had thrown a sweater over your long sleeve, but you were still cold.
„Turn the heating up.“ Kate suggested, clearly having registered that you were cold. The way you were practically curled up into the passenger seat and had your arms crossed, it probably wasn’t hard to put one and one together. You turned to look at her and shook your head.
„Too much heating air gives me a headache.“ You explained and looked back out the window. It looked peaceful, just miles and miles of fields and flat land. In the corner of your eye you saw Kate nod in understanding. It was silent for a few seconds before she spoke.
„I have a jacket in the backseat. You can put it on.“ You looked at her and then turned your head around very uncomfortably to look at the backseat. Sure enough there was a cardigan, looking soft and incredibly warm. For a moment you hesitated. Another look at Kate, but she was just smiling softly. It was probably a bad idea and would make you fall even more in love with her. But you were so cold.
So you bent your back awkwardly and reached behind your seat to grab the cardigan. Your shoulder brushed Kate’s and your face was far too close to hers. The sift smell of her perfume filled your nose, and it made your heady dizzy. As soon as your fingers wrapped around the soft fabric of the cardigan you pulled it to the front and sat back normally. With a little bit of fidgeting you put the jacket on. The fabric a little tight around you, but so wonderfully warm. You let out a happy sigh and nuzzled into the cardigan with a soft smile.
„That’s much better, isn’t it?“ Kate said and even though you’d closed your eyes you could hear the smile in her voice. That beautiful smile, the one you wished would always be because of you. The familiar sensation of fluttering butterflies made itself known inside of you. You hummed in agreement and just nuzzled deeper into her cardigan. It smelled exactly like her and that gave you so much comfort.
You felt a tender touch on your cheek, soft fingers brushing over the skin there. Unconsciously you leant into it, humming happily. A warm chuckle, soft like honey made its way through the fog of sleep.
„(Y/n), dear. We’re there.“ The same warm voice said, soft and quiet. Sounding so much like Kate. Suddenly your eyes snap open. It was Kate. You immediately sat up straighter and untangled yourself form the complicated mess you’d brought your limbs into in the seat. You blinked a few times to adjust to the darkness around you, just a little light in the car on around you.
„I remember when I could sit like that.“ Kate chuckled amused as she pulled the car key out of the ignition. You looked at her next to you, still a bit out of it from the sleep. You hadn’t even realised you’d fallen asleep. But that soft, tender touch in your cheeks… You couldn’t stop thinking about it, you craved more of it.
„My old body won’t allow something like that anymore.“ She said, laughing, and before it registered in your brain she had stepped out of the car. You hastily put your shoes back on and in an attempt to quickly get out of the car, nearly fell face-first into the mud. In the last second you caught yourself, albeit not very gracefully. When you looked up you saw Kate peeking around the car from behind and grin at you, eyebrow raised. A bit embarrassed you stuck your tongue out to her and closed the car door. A hearty laugh came from Kate, slightly morphing into that absolutely ridiculous laugh of hers. It wasn’t heard too often around UNIT headquarters it always made your heart warm.
„You’re being mean.“ You said, sounding like a petulant child, but it was clear you were joking. You rounded the car and stepped up next to her, grabbing your bag from the boot.
"And you’re not old.“ You added, the actual reason you’d even started that ridiculous exit from the car. Without waiting for an answer you walked away from the car and into the little inn that Kate had parked in front of. Kate looked after you, as soft smile on her lips and slightly shaking her head. She closed the boot and followed you inside.
The inn really wasn’t big and was more of a Pub with a few rooms than an actual inn. Very Scottish, but cosy and most importantly warm. You could just hope the rooms would be warm as well. There were a few people scattered across the room and an old man behind the bar. You walked up to him and his thick Scottish accent immediately woke you up. Half asleep you wouldn’t have understood a single word he said.
Kate came up next to you, and you looked at her, right in the middle of paying for the room. Room, not rooms. Kate suspiciously eyed the one key you had. You quickly wrapped up with the man and practically shoved her through the room and into a very badly lit hallway with creaky stairs.
„I didn’t understand a single fucking word of what he said.“ You told Kate as you walked up the stairs. The whole Pub had an unmistakable smell of spilled beer to it. „I think he said something about the other rooms all being full. And I think he assumed we were a couple.“ You explained, trying to remember the few words he’d coherently spoken and string them together. You heard a sharp intake of breath behind you and stopped in the last step to look back at her.
„Everything alright?“ You asked a bit concerned, it was hard to make out faces in the near complete dark of the hallway. But you could see Kate nod and wave you off. For a moment you hesitated but figured she’d speak up if something was wrong, so you kept walking. The room was at the end of the hall, and you opened the door easily, though just like the stairs, it creaked a bit.
You stepped inside holding the door open with your foot until you felt Kate hold it. Two steps, and you were in the middle of the room, and you abruptly stopped, resulting in Kate practically walking into you.
„What-…“ She started but immediately got why you stopped. Not only was it fucking freezing in the room, and you shortly thought about sleeping in the much warmer hallway, there was also just one bed. One, quite small bed. Your insides practically fell over themselves, fluttering at the thought of sleeping in that bed with her.
„I’ll sleep on the floor.“ Kate’s words pulled you out of your daze. Turning around to her, an eyebrow raised critically you shook your head. Absolutely not.
„Don’t be ridiculous, your back would kill you.“ Was your simple answer, and you stepped further into the room, rounding the bed and setting your bag down on the right side of the bed. You took Kate’s cardigan off and slipped out of the pullover underneath, leaving you in a long sleeve shirt. It was definitely freezing in the room. You just wanted to put on a thicker sweater on when you see Kate remained standing by the door, just watching you.
„Kate, we are grown people. We can share a bed for two nights.“ You nearly sounded like a scolding mother and that seemed to snap Kate out of it. She walked to her side of the bed and silently started unpacking her bag.
A part of you wishes Kate really would sleep in the floor. It was the reasonable part, the one that this couldn’t end well. The bed was too small, the room to cold. Your body would surely seek warmth in Kate.
„I’ll treat you to dinner downstairs. As compensation for having to sleep in a bed with me.“ Kate said a bit softer again and looked up from her bag, now nearly completely unpacked. You look at her, your pj’s in hand and tilt your head.
„That’s really not necessary, but thank you.“ You knew arguing would get you nowhere with Kate, so you just accepted it. Quickly you finished unpacking your things as well and saw her waiting for you. She was leaned against the wall, hands stuffed into the pockets of her pants. She had taken her blazer off and the pale blue blouse underneath drive you crazy. The upper buttons were opened, and her sleeves were neatly rolled up. The sight alone made your mouth water.
You shook yourself out of it and without thinking put Kate’s cardigan back on. You missed the way Kate looked at you in her jacket and smiled softly, her cheeks ever so slightly flushed. The long sleeve and the cardigan would be too cold for the room, but the bar room had been nice and warm, with the fireplace alight. You walked over to Kate and gave her a smile. Opening the door you gestured for her to step into the hallway. She shot you a smirk and walked past you.
Nothing had changed in the bar room since you’d crossed it to get to your room half an hour ago. The old Scottish man still stood behind the bar, now reading a newspaper. Seven people were spread around the room. Three young women, crouched into a corner chatting and giggling like teenager. Best friends, you assumed. An old, presumably married couple sat at a table by the bar, eating fish and chips. And two men, about your age sat at a high table on the wall opposite the bar. They were just drinking beer, a bag of crisps in front of them.
You simply followed Kate to a table close to the fireplace. Sitting down across from her, your back turned to the warm fire you sighed happily. Kate smiled at you softly and opened one of the menu’s. When she was done looking through it, she turned it around and pushed it to you.
„What will you eat?“ You asked absent-mindedly, while looking through the menu. She leans back in her chair and crosses her legs, running a hand through her blonde hair.
„Fish and Chips and the bitter they have on cask.“ She answered and pulled her wallet out of her bag. She looked ready to stand up and walk to the bar, just waiting for you to decide.
„I’ll have the pie and mash and the lager on cask, please. Thank you.“ You said and closed the menu, putting it back in its holder. She stood up and walked over to the bar to order your food and pay. You were thankful actually, at least you wouldn’t have to talk to the old man again. His accent really was not understandable. You watched her lean on the bar, looking so effortlessly attractive. One hand pushed into her pocket and the other gripping her wallet.
She had one leg behind her other, foot propped up in the tips and tapping on the floor impatiently. It brought out her figure even better, and you shamelessly stared at the way her suit pants clung to her ass. She paid and as you saw her reaching for the two pints in front of her you turned your head away. She placed the beer down in front of you and sat down on her chair again. You blinked your glasses together and spent the time waiting for the food talking about anything but work. A welcome change to your usual conversations.
At some point your mind slipped away, and you barely listened to a word she was saying. Her lips were moving, but the words didn’t hit you. You couldn’t help but stare at her lips, your eyes flickering down the few open buttons of her blouse, a tantalising amount of cleavage exposed for your eye. You were thankful that at some point the food had come and Kate was too preoccupied with it to see where your eyes were directed to.
„What do you want to drink? I’ll buy you one. You already paid for the dinner.“ You said after you had both finished eating and shoved your empty plate away. Without warning, she grabbed your glass and took the last sip of it.
„I like that. I’ll take one of that.“ She said nonchalantly and puts the glass back down. All you could do is nod, your eyes still glued to where her lips had touched the rim of the glass. You grabbed your wallet and headed over to the bar, trying to get your head straight. You ordered two half pints and paid for them.
„I’ve never seen you here before.“ Surprised you turned your head to the side. You saw one of the man from across the bar standing next to you. He was your age, brown curls, a tad taller than you. A slight Scottish accent could be heard in his voice. He actually looked kind of nice. Like someone, you’d be friends with, definitely not someone you’d date. But with men you could always see it in their eyes, he definitely wanted to pick you up. You gave him a polite smile.
„That’s probably because I’m not from around here.“ You said, putting your card back into your wallet and looked back at him, waiting for beers to be ready. He had his eyebrows raised, the question clear on his face.
„London.“ You offered as an answer, and judging by his understanding nod you’d read his question right.
He leaned on the bar, trying a bit too hard to look relaxed. You turned to him fully and grinned, in the corner of your eye you could see Kate's eyes glued to you. A tilt of your head helped you take a look at her. She looked...jealous?
"And what does such a pretty London lady do in a dump like this?" His word shook you out of it, and you looked back at him, chuckling amused.
"I'm afraid, that's classified." He looked a bit taken aback, but he quickly found his smirk again and nodded.
"Classified, huh? What are you, the MI5?" Awfully pleased with, he grinned at you and just at that moment two half pints of Lager were placed in front of you. You took them, shoving your wallet into your jeans and smirked at the man.
"Maybe." You simply reply and walk past him, towards Kate. You missed the dumbfounded look on the man's face and just saw Kate's eyes still trained on you. A hint of possessiveness and jealous still gracing her features. You more assumed than knew that the man would be following you. And when you set down across from Kate he stood right beside the table. You sighed and crossed your legs. Taking a sip of your beer first before giving him any attention.
"Let me give you my number, we would have to talk about your classified work." He said, and the innuendo was clear in his tone of voice and the smug expression on his face. You had to concentrate hard to not roll your eyes. You shot Kate a look and hot an idea.
"Sorry, mate. But I'm already spoken for." You said and looked at Kate in just the right moment to make it clear who you were spoken for. You saw Kate's eyes widen a bit, but for the sake of the moment she pulled herself together.
You did not like the look in the man's face when he eyed Kate. Not at all. He looked at her disparagingly, like he would be a better match for me. And no doubt that's what he thought.
"Come on, how old is she?" He said and that was definitely a mistake. Your little thread of patience you had with men like him ripped in mere seconds. You looked up at him and raised an eyebrow.
"I'm not sure that's any of your business. Besides, she gives better head than you." Well, that effectively shut him up. He gawked at you for a moment, like a lost fish and then retreated back to his table. You snickered amused and sipped on your beer, but when you looked at Kate you didn't see the smirk you had expected.
Her whole demeanour had changed, and her eyes had darkened. The only word you could think of to describe what you saw was hunger. Sure, the two of you had danced around each other for months. And you were quite sure that there was something between you. But this was new.
"Drink up." She said and her tone of voice cut right through you and went straight to your core. A bit perplexed you stared at her, blinking a few times. But there was no patience in her eyes, so you quickly drank the rest of your beer. She stood up and reached out a hand for you to take. You took it and followed her through the pub, past the guy that had hit on you and into the darkened hallway. You went up the stairs, her hand still tightly gripping yours, and towards your room.
Inside the room you were immediately pulled flush against her and soft, warm lips pressed against yours. Considering the hunger and possessiveness you'd seen in Kate's eyes downstairs the kiss was surprisingly tender. But that was Kate for you, full of care and gentleness. It was what made her such an excellent leader. She always kept a clear head and could lead and make aliens falter with one look. But she never lost the care and empathy she felt for the world. For her officers and her team. For you.
Instinctively your hand reached up and tangled itself into her honey-blonde hair, soft and silky. You’d wanted to touch it for so long, and it nearly made your legs give out, the way she kissed you, so fiercely and yet so loving. When you both felt like you might suffocate if you don’t take a breather she pulled back and rested her forehead against yours.
„I don’t like men flirting with you.“ She admitted and nearly sounded embarrassed, like she had no right to feel that way. And you assumed in some ways she didn’t, but you wanted her to feel jealous. You wanted her to want you for herself.
„I figured as much. You were quite jealous.“ A soft giggle bubble out of Kate as you said that and the sound was so unfamiliar, so unusual for her, it made your heart stop for a moment. And with the way your heart warmed and everything inside you felt like you just wanted to hear her make that sound again, there was no denying your feelings anymore. You were head over heels, absolutely stupidly in love with her.
Gently you let your hand wander from her hair into her neck and played with the soft hair there. You felt her shiver slightly and a soft sigh escaped her. Her hands gripped your hips a bit tighter, her fingers digging into the material of her own cardigan draped around you.
"So, you think I give better head than that douchebag, huh?" She whispered, but there was a hint of a challenge in her tone, and you chuckled in responds. Slightly pulling back you were able to look her in the eyes. With a mischievous smirk on your lips you spoke.
"Why don't you show me?" She answered with a grin and suddenly her hands were all over you. Tugging the cardigan off your shoulders, pulling your shirt out of your jeans and pushing you back towards the bed. With a slight oof and a giggle you fell back onto the sheets, and you quickly kicked your shoes off. The sight in front of you made heat pool between your legs. Kate easily fell to her knees, settling between your legs in front of the bed. Her slender fingers made quick work of the button on your jeans.
"You'd like that, huh?" Kate practically husked, and it was enough to tell you that she was just as affected by all this. Eagerly you lifted your hips when she hooked her fingers under them hem of your jeans. Tantalisingly slow she pulled them down your legs, exposing more and more of your skin. From up in the bed you had a delicious view right into her blouse and the soft pale curve of her breast drove you crazy. Before you knew it your knickers were gone as well and strong hands pushed your thighs apart, digging wonderfully into your flesh. Your head fell back onto the mattress, and you just heard her hum.
"You're dripping, darling." She commented and that alone nearly made you burst. You needed her, now. One of your hands made its way back into her hair, impatiently pushing her closer to where you so desperately wanted her. She chuckled, deep and warm and the sound went up your spine and through your whole body like honey. The next thing you heard was your own moan as her tongue trailed through your folds and your fingers tightened their grip in her hair.
"Shit, Kate." You gasped. She was good at this, really good. No doubt better than the guy from earlier. Her tongue on you felt like heaven, and you asked yourself how you'd been able to resist her all these months. Your hips lifted up involuntarily, and you ground against her. Desperate for more, for her. Her hands held you steadily in place, fingers massaging the soft flesh of your thighs. Gasps and moans filled the room when she sucked on your clit, a wonderful mix of hungry and gentle that made your head spin. Your free hand gripped the bedsheets desperately. When you came your back arched off the bed and your thighs wanted to squeeze shut. But Kate held them open, spreading them for her to ride you through it and clean every bit of you up.
The smug smile on her lips when she pulled back and looked up at you made you laugh. Breathless but absolutely content. Gently to untangled your fingers from her hair and cupped her cheek.
"Come here." You said, smiling and pulled her up on top of you. One leg wrapped around her, you pulled her flush against you. Your thumb tenderly trailed over her bottom lip.
"You were definitely better than that douchebag." You confirmed and chuckled at her happy face, she looked awfully pleased with herself. Swiftly you pulled her into a kiss and switched your positions on the bed.
"Your turn."
The small, single bed definitely wasn't a problem anymore.

Misplaced Doubt
Pairing: Kate Lethbridge-Stewart x fem!Reader
Word Count: 1200
Warning: NSFW being hinted (just minor), bit of anxiety
Summary: Kate finds out you're not human, but actually a Timelady. How will she react?

A/n: So, I made Reader a Timelady, cause it fits best with the physiology. Seems the most human. I settled with Timelady but there's no use of pronouns, so it could also be read as gn!reader. Let's just ignore that the Timelords are all dead. Hope you like it!! Would love a repost, like or comment. <3
■----------------------------------------■
You were torn. Obviously, you were aware that this approach was not the right one. Kate meant a lot to you, and you really liked her. So keeping secrets was wrong. But what were you meant to do?
At the beginning, you'd just been scared of telling her. Scared she'd reject you or wouldn't want you and at some point so much time had passed that it would have just been awkward to tell her. Cause how were you supposed to tell your girlfriend of nearly a year that you were a Timelady? That you had two hearts, could very well be a different person entirely tomorrow and would live to see her die.
Right, you just wouldn't. And if one day you'd regenerate or simply not grow old, well that was a problem for your future self.
Except it wasn't. In a very stupid string of events you'd managed to fall down the ladder when trying to change a light bulb and Kate was fussing. All her motherly instincts made themselves known, and she went slightly overboard with her worry.
"It's fine, Katie. I promise." You assured her as you sat in her couch, Kate kneeling beside you and looking worried. She was convinced you should see a doctor. You're sure they'd be delighted to find out about your second heart.
"You fell of the ladder. It's not fine." She insisted, eyebrows adorably furrowed and nervously biting her lip. A side of her anyone but you rarely got to witness.
"Look at me, I'm smiling and talking and breathing. I'm fine." You assure her again and smile at her as if to prove your point. But she was stubborn, you knew that. And if she had something in her mind there was no way going around it.
"No, I'll take you to the Doctor. I won't accept a no." You sighed, knowing that there was a good possibility your little, actually not so little, secret was about to come out.
"Kate, we can't go to the Doctor." You said, sighing and defeated. She had just gotten up and turned away to get her stuff when you spoke. So she turns back around and looks down at you confused.
"Why not?" She asked sceptically and crossed her arms. You sat up a bit in the couch, already feeling your body easily heal whatever had been hurt by the fall. You looked at her apologetically, as if to apologise for what was yet to come.
"I haven't been entirely truthful to you, Kate." You sighed and rubbed your face, elbows propped up on your knees. You looked up at Kate and gestured to the armchair across from you. "Please, sit down."
And she did. She sat down, though she still looked sceptical. Her arms were crossed, and her eyes fixed on you. You felt your hearts beat rapidly in your chest the tell-tale signs of anxiety rising in you.
"There's something I haven't told you. And I'm sorry for keeping that from you. I just didn't know how..." You sighed and closed your eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath. "I'm a Timelady, Kate." There, it's out. No going back now.
After what felt like forever you opened your eyes and looked at Kate. She hadn't said a word. The silence was excruciating. The look on her face broke your heart, and you were sure it was all over now. She looked so hurt. So heartbroken. And it was your fault. She untangled her crossed arms and rubbed her palms over her jeans, then she stood up and paced up and down in front of you.
"How could you not tell me that?" She asked and besides the hurt there was an obvious layer of anger in her voice. She stopped pacing and crossed her arms again, looking down at you in the couch. She even looked angry.
"Listen, Kate I didn't mean to keep a secret or anything..." She scoffed and didn't even let you finish. She couldn't even look at you.
"You didn't want to keep a secret? Well, newsflash, you kept a secret." She shot back, and you could feel yourself shrink with every word you said. You'd ruined everything. You'd been dishonest with her and why would she want to be with someone who's not even human. It had been eleven wonderful months. But that was over now. Great.
"I'm sorry, Kate." You said again, practically sinking into yourself, eyes downcast. Silence. When you look up you nearly expected her to be gone. But she was still there. Her arms hanging at her sides and the hurt back in her features. It was killing you.
"Don't you trust me?" She asked and it sounded so broken. You looked at her confused. Of course, you trusted her. With your life. "I work for UNIT for fuck's sake. I can keep a secret.
"Course you can. That's not-..." you watched her for a second. She seemed hurt that you hadn't told her, hurt that you'd kept a secret. But...she didn't seem repulsed or disappointed or like she wanted to reject you.
"I didn't want to lose you. You're too important." Now it was her time to look confused. Silence, again. Until she sinks back into the armchair, this time leaning forward. Towards you, a good sign.
"Loose me?" She asks with that adorable high tone that she always used when she was curious about something she didn't quite understand. Her brows were furrowed as she waited for an answer.
"Yeah. Loose you." You said and shrugged helplessly. "I'm not human, Kate. Above that, I'm a Timelady. It could might as well happen that you come back from work next week and I have a different face, a different personality." You explained, dreading the second she'd understand the full impact of this. But it didn't seem to come.
"But you'd still be you." She said as if it was the easiest thing in the world. How could she just not mind at all? People would talk if she suddenly had a 'new' partner. She can be alright with that. Can she?
"But, how can you just not care?" You asked dumbfounded. Confusion written all over your face.
"I'm pissed that you kept that from me. And you'll have some making up to do for that. But I love you. I'd never leave you because of something like that. I fell in love with who you are. Not the face or the body you have." She explained, more gently now. Then she even smirked slightly. "Not to say I don't appreciate the body." You blushed slightly, still a bit shocked by her nonchalant approach to all this. This woman was truly remarkable.
"I love you so much, Katie. I'm sorry I doubted you." You said and reached over to gently take her hand in yours. "Let me start with some of those amends I have to make." You said and pulled her to her feet, immediately wrapping an arm around her waist and pressing her flush against you. She giggled and looked up at you with those beautiful eyes, filled with love and the world was back to being alright.
Please another story with Kate Stewart! Perhaps, if you’re interested, something like a reunion story? They meet again after Kate’s been away for a while?

Summary: Kate comes home after a worktrip after not having texted you for two days

A/n: Hope you like it anon, made it a bit more angsty. Would love a repost, like or comment. <3 Can also be read as a gn!Reader ♡
■----------------------------------------■
Dating Kate wasn't always easy. She worked long hours, often had to go on trips and wouldn't come back for multiple days or even longer. And she wasn't allowed to tell you what she even worked as. All you knew was that she worked for a government organisation protecting the planet from extraterrestrial forces. Great explanation, thank you very much. As if that wouldn't make approximately three million questions pop up in your brain.
But you loved her, and you made it work. Sometimes it was hard work, but it worked nonetheless. It was particularly hard work in moments like these. She'd been gone for eight days, off to some place off the world you weren't allowed to know too much about.
You missed her rotten. But mostly you were worried. You always were, but now more than ever. Usually she texted you every morning and every night. Even if she didn't have time for anything else, that was a given. But she hadn't texted you since yesterday morning. No text last night. No text this morning. No text now, and it was already dark outside.
So obviously you were worried sick and couldn't sleep. You tossed and turned, for what felt like hours. The familiar feeling of dread and anxiety settling deep inside of you. Your mind wandered and conjured up the worst scenarios possible. That went on until you heard a car pull up in front of the house and a few moments later a key unlocking the front door. It was unmistakably Kate's key, and the way she tried to be silent but immediately went into the kitchen for a tea gave her away as well. Trying to be silent was considerate, very Kate. But did she really think you could sleep right now? In seconds, you jumped out of the bed and ran down the stairs, barefoot and simply in a top and shorts. You didn't even bother giving Kate a warning of any kind, you practically flew into the kitchen and right into her arms. She only had a second to register what was happening and open her arms for you.
You immediately buried your face in the crook of her neck and took in her scent, that was so uniquely Kate. A wonderful mix of her perfume and shampoo filling your senses. Your arms around her neck clung onto her and her hand gently rubbed your back. Never in your life did you ever want to let go again.
"Did I wake you, my love?" She asked you, and the question was so ridiculous that it actually made you laugh a little through the silent tears that had formed in your eyes. You pulled back a bit and looked at her, a few tears slowly running down your cheeks.
"Do you really think I could sleep with how worried I was?" You asked her and her expression formed into a mix of guilt and confusion. When will she understand that you always worry about her when she goes off to these work trips? She always comes back injured in some way. It was the whole reason why you always made her text you, to know she was safe and alive.
You took a step back and looked her up and down, checking for visible injuries. You didn't see any, but she was fully clothed. Looking back up at her, you put on a stern, no nonsense look.
"Where are you hurt?" You asked, worried and eyes still slightly filled with tears. She shook her head, and you immediately knew she'd play tough.
"I'm fine, darling. Nothing happened." She said and tried to make her voice sound reassuring and calm. But she sounded exhausted instead. You could see right through her. She was lying. You crossed your arms in front of your chest and shook your head.
"Don't lie to me. Where are you hurt?" You repeated the question again. And you would until she'd answer you. "You didn't text me for nearly two days, something happened." You said and felt yourself choke up a bit, remembering how worried you'd been. Kate's gaze softened a bit at that, and you could see the decision she'd made in her eyes. She'd tell you where she was hurt. She was too exhausted for drama and arguing. She craved care and love.
She took off her blazer and then unbuttoned her blouse, taking it off and throwing it over the back of the chair. Her left side and rips where black and blue and a fairly big bandage was wrapped neatly around her right underarm. The sight made you gasp, and you immediately felt awful for the way you jumped into her arms. That must have hurt like hell.
"Kate, honey..." You whispered, eyes big and glossy, full of concern. "I want you to tell me things like this." You added quietly, eyes glued to the bruising on her rips.
"It's nothing, really it's not-" She started, no doubt trying to keep you from worrying. But it was too late for that. Right now you just wanted to take care of her.
"Katherine." You said in a tone of voice that cut her right off. She looked at you a bit surprised. No one called her Katherine, not these days at least. But it was effective, Kate closed her mouth and just nodded.
"Alright. I'll make you the tea you were no doubt making when I jumped on you. And you go upstairs and change into something comfy, but keep the top off. I'll put some lotion on those bruises." You explained to her, already moving around the kitchen to boil water and get her a cup. In the corner of your eye, you could see Kate's shoulders relax a bit. She grabbed her blazer and blouse and walked out of the kitchen. While you waited for the water to boil you could hear Kate walk around upstairs and when it stopped you knew she'd settled into bed to wait.
When the tea is done you go up to join Kate. You set the tea down in the little night stand next to your bed and placed a soft kiss on Kate's head. She was half sitting half lying down, leaned against the headboard. You grabbed some lotion from the bathroom.
"Any injuries at the legs?" You asked gently, standing next to the bed. Kate looked truly exhausted. She took a sip of tea before answering, but already shook her head.
"No, I showed you everything." You gave her a smile before climbing onto the bed and settling in her legs. Kate's hands immediately found a cosy home on your naked thighs. You just wanted to make a comment about it and tell her 'no funny business' when you see that she closed her eyes and immediately relaxed. It always astounded you how much of a relaxing effect you had on her, so much that just her hands on your skin calmed her down. You simply smiled to yourself and very gently started to spread the lotion on her rips. You could see that it hurt in the way she pressed her eyes close a bit firmer and lightly bit on her lower lip. But you tried to be as gentle as possible. When you're done you place the lotion on the night stand as well and gently lean in to kiss Kate on the lips. She hadn't seen it coming, her eyes still closed, but she kissed you back nonetheless. It's a short, soft kiss. Tender and full of love, and it nearly makes you choke up again.
Carefully you climb off her and settle down next to her, nuzzling into her non-injured side. Her arm easily wrapped around you and pulled you a bit closer, your head rested in her bare chest. The lotion had to dry before she could put her shirt back on.
"You scared me." You whisper quietly after some time of just cuddling in silence. "Please text me next time. Or make that scientist text me. Osgood? Something to know you're not dead." It hung heavy between the two of you and made you swallow hard. It was a possibility, you both knew that. Kate better than you, but even with how little you knew of her job you knew enough for that possibility to settle in your mind more often than you liked.
"I promise. I'm sorry I worried you." She answered, her soft voice ringing through the room and soothing your soul and heart. You simply nodded and nuzzled even closer, if that's even possible.
"I missed you."
"I missed you too."
"I love you."
"I love you more."
"Not possible."

Two years. It had been two years since you'd seen the Doctor. Back then she'd been blonde, a bit awkward and a woman. Now he was the complete opposite. Slightly Scottish, Black, an enthusiastic and loud man, seemingly not that much older than you. Colourful clothes, different ones each day and a strangely shaped sonic screwdriver.
But he was still somehow so uniquely the Doctor. And it felt like coming home. The second he stepped out of the Tardis and enveloped you in a hug you felt like no time had passed. Hell went loose as always. But the running, the adrenaline, the fear and uncertainty all felt like coming back to something you'd missed so dearly.
You could see Kate's eyes sadden with each second. She probably knew exactly how this day would end. And it broke her heart, which broke your heart. It had been an amazing year. Wonderfully domestic and normal. But it had become too normal. Sure UNIT had crazy things happen every day. But the feeling of going out into space, travelling through time was something that nothing could ever live up to. And you craved more of it. So badly.
"You should come and travel with me again." The Doctor had yelled across the room, right in the middle of a crisis. In a moment of pure chaos and stress. You simply flashed him a knowing smile and went back to work. Kate's heart sank even further. If she hadn't known before, she knew now. She'd never compare. She'd never hold a candle to the wonders of the Universe. To the wonders of the Doctor.
So after everything had been solved, and you'd helped clean up the headquarters you can feel Kate's stare on you, practically drilling a hole through you. You sigh and turn around, giving her an apologetic smile. That smile was enough to make it abundantly clear to Kate how this day was going to end.
"You'll leave, won't you? Go with him." She said and the hurt in her voice broke you apart. You swallowed hard and leaned back against one of the desks. You looked down at the floor for a moment before looking back up at Kate. Her eyes were slightly glossy, but she'd never let the tears fall. It stung. She'd started to open up to you, allow herself to be vulnerable around you. With hurting her you took that privilege away.
"I'm sorry, Katie." You simply answered. It was answer enough. The nickname a weak try to make the blow hit her less hard. Soothe the pain. It wasn't working. Obviously. She let out a shaky breath, her arms crossed in front of her chest. She looked away, off to the side like she couldn't bare to see your face.
"I'll come visit." You tried, almost like a plead to not lose everything. You couldn't ask her to wait, that was unfair, and you were aware of that. How long would she need to wait? A year? Five? Fifteen?
She turned her head back to look at you. One single tear rolling down her cheek. She wiped it away, almost angry at herself for even showing that much vulnerability. You took a step forward. She didn't back away. A very small success.
"I love you, Kate. Don't question that." You said absolutely sincerely. The pain in her eyes was almost enough for you to not go. But just almost.
"But out there. The wonders of it all." You spoke, voice full of admiration and awe. "It's amazing." Kate knew she couldn't compare to that. She nodded. Almost defeated.
"I know." Another shaky breath.
"I'll come visit." You said again, like you wanted to convince yourself of it. "And you know there'll come a time where I'll stop travelling with him again." Your tone was hopeful. Hopeful that she'd wait. But you'd never ask that of her.
"My door will always be open for you." She said and you doubted she'd wait. She wanted to. You saw it in her eyes. But eventually she'd move on.
"You could come with us." A futile offer. She had a life here. Responsibilities. Children. Work.
"No, I couldn't." She spoke what you'd tried to ignore. You knew she was right. Behind you, you heard the Tardis materialise to pick you up. Your answer had been given hours ago. Gently you kiss Kate. It was a goodbye and you both knew it.
"I'll come visit." You repeated again and ignored the pain in your whole body. Ignored the tears you felt on your own cheeks. Ignored the few tears on her cheeks. She nodded. Before you stepped into the Tardis you turned back around, locked eyes with Kate and blew her a kiss. Then you were gone and Kate stood alone in the barely lit headquarters, tears rolling down her cheeks as the Tardis vanished.

■----------------------------------------■
It had been a hell of a day. And on top of that it was your birthday. Not the greatest birthday you'd had. It had started as a slow day, lots of paperwork for Kate. A few meetings you had to usher her to and remind her to eat in between them. She always managed to forget that somehow.
She had promised you a short day, to go home earlier and celebrate a bit. You didn't tell her that you didn't really have anyone to celebrate with and would rather stay by her side. Instead, you smile thankfully. But all that was forgotten the second Osgood came rushing out of her lab with unusual readings just out of London, a little into the countryside.
From that moment on it was pure chaos and stress. Different readings, all unusual and unfamiliar. All scientists trying to make something of it and failing, even Osgood. Kate was calm and collected, but you saw that it took a toll on her. She'd again failed to eat, and you were rushing after her with a sandwich in hand. It took you an hour to get it into her completely.
At some point Osgood had isolated the signal and had a location for you. Kate put together a team of scientists and soldiers to get out there and look at it. The drive was excruciatingly long, the rush hour on the streets not helping at all. For a second your mind drifted to the bottle of wine and take out you could have right now. At home, on your couch.
All in all, everything went well. No one had died in the field, only a few were injured. But every attempt of Kate's at diplomacy had been shut off and failed. So in the end you had used sheer force and a lot of bullets.
Osgood was disappointed that you hadn't found out what species the aliens had been. That you hadn't learned more about them, but Kate promised her to take one of the dead bodies back to HQ for studying. That at least made her beam.
Everyone was clearing up, injured soldiers being brought to the Doctors. The alien, whatever it was had some sort of venom in its system that paralysed humans. Apparently it was in its tongue, as some soldiers had been practically licked by the creatures. But nothing much happened besides being temporarily paralysed, so it didn't seem too bad. Until it suddenly seemed very bad.
You'd been talking with Kate, going over some logistics of taking a dead creature back unnoticed to HQ when you heard a sizzling somewhere very close. It was unmistakably the sound all the aliens had made when ready to attack. Mere second later you see it run right towards you. You had obviously missed it when clearing the area, and it had hid. Until now.
You couldn't even think as quickly as you acted. You stepped in front of Kate and pushed her away. In the corner of your eye you saw her tumbling to the ground and in the next second you cried out in pain. Sharp teeth sinking into the flesh of your shoulder and tearing your shirt apart. You were thrown to the floor and a second later you heard what felt like a thousand shots all directed at the creature.
Apparently the venom was stronger in its teeth. At least that's what you assumed cause unlike the others who'd just been licked you felt numb and paralysed all over. Not just in the arm. Your view got foggy and the shouts and words around you sounded like they were spoken from behind a thick door. You faintly registered someone kneeling over you. A pretty sight with blonde hair falling into her face. A bit like an angel.
"Kate..." you whispered, and then you were gone. You didn't register one bit of all the fuss around you. You didn't register Kate's nearly hysterical cry for a medic. You didn't register Sam and Josh guarding you in case more creatures came. You didn't register Osgood having half of an asthma attack and Kate being too out of it to remind her of her inhaler. You didn't register the medics coming and taking you with them. Nothing.
The first thing you did register was beeping and light. Really bright light. You groaned slightly, a sharp pain shooting through your shoulder as you tried to move. You settled back into the pillow and cleared your sight a bit, by blinking a few times.
Slowly the bright light turns into a white ceiling, a few lamps and a few monitors in the corner of your eye. You figured that's where the beeping came from. You looked around a bit, seeing a big window showing the blue sky on your left. Ahead of you was a TV and a door, supposedly leading to the bathroom. On your right was a door that led out of the room and a chair. In that chair was Kate. She looked awful, tired and worn out. But mostly she looked angry.
You tried to sit up a bit but groaned when your shoulder hurt again. Kate stood up from her seat, looking at you, arms crossed. "Lie back, don't move."
You frowned a bit at her sharp tone, but complied. Slowly sinking back into the pillow, you settled in a way that would make your shoulder hurt as little as possible.
"Are you insane?" She asked you in a way she usually scolded soldiers who didn't follow her orders. A tone that made you question your own decision immediately and showed you she was more disappointed in you than anything else. It was a good tone, very useful. Usually. Not now. You looked at her a bit perplexed.
"Saved your life. A thank you would be nice." You mumbled under your breath and immediately regretted it. Kate's eyebrows shot up, and she looked at you like she was ready to catapult you back into the hospital herself the second you could leave.
"You risked your life unnecessarily, that's what you did. It was irresponsible and frankly idiotic." She scoffed in disbelief. She threw her hands up into the air and pinched the bridge of her nose.
"You can be happy I'm not putting you on desk duty for the next few field missions." At that you looked not just confused but offended. Again you tried to sit up, but a sharp look from Kate made you lie back down immediately.
"Desk Duty? What the hell for?" You asked in disbelief and stared at her dumbfounded.
"You acted irresponsible. What tells me you won't disobey orders the next time?" She spoke, arms crossed and a stern expression on her face. She wasn't joking and it confused you.
"You're being ridiculous, Kate. You know I always obey your orders." It was true. You always obeyed every order. You trusted her, completely. And you trusted her judgement, even in a seemingly dire situation. She just huffed and turned away from you. But not completely, just enough, so she wouldn't have to look at you anymore. You studied her, her side profile never seized to take your breath away. Just like every thing else about her.
You snapped out of your trance when you see Kate's hand reach up and wipe her cheek angrily. You focused on her a bit more, brows furrowed in confusion.
"Kate, are you crying?" You asked surprised, but softer. She turned away from you a bit further, trying to hide her face completely. You contemplated getting up, but that might be a stupid idea. Kate would probably kill you. "Kate?"
She huffed angrily and looked at you, now looking more in pain than anything else. "You nearly died!" She snapped at you. For a second, you weren't sure what to say.
"Kate, come here." You said softly and held up a hand for her. She looked down at your hand and back up at you. For a moment, she didn't move an inch. Then, slowly, she approached you and sat down at the side of your bed.
"I'm sorry for scaring you, Kate. I know that can't have been easy. But please, don't be angry at me for trying to save you." You softly spoke, grabbing her hand and squeezing it. She still wasn't looking at you. You let go of her hand and reached up to turn her head in your direction. Her eyes were shining with tears that she stubbornly refused to let fall.
"I'd do it all again if it meant saving the woman I love." You spoke softly, merely more than a gentle whisper. Like a warm blanket wrapping itself around Kate's heart. Her eyes widened slightly, and finally she let a few of those tears fall down. Slowly rolling down her cheeks. You caught them with your thumb, lovingly wiping them away.
"I thought I'd lost you." She said, voice shaky and broken but still so strong. Still so stubbornly put together. So uniquely Kate. You looked at her fondly, fingers still brushing over her cheek.
"But you haven't. I'm here. Alive and breathing. And so very much in love with you." You softly reassure her and grabbed her hand again. Pulling it up to your mouth you gently kissed her knuckles. Her breath got caught for a moment as she looked at you. Eyes wide and nearly confused.
"Was I that good at hiding it?" You chuckle as you saw her confused expression. She was fishing for words, highly unusual for Kate. You chuckled again.
"Just kiss me." You whispered. Her eyes widening comically. When she didn't move a millimetre, you reached up and put your hand in her neck, simply pulling her down to you. Her lips are soft on yours, the kiss tender and cautious. And for a moment to forget what had happened. You forgot the pain in your shoulder. You forgot the world even existed outside of this kiss.

"You're still here." You stated softly, albeit not very surprised, as you stepped into Kate's office. It was well past 10 pm, and it had been a long, eventful day. She looked tired, exhausted by the day. You never liked her staying so late to work.
“Yes, why wouldn’t I be?” She said without looking up from where she was trying to finish some paperwork. You raised your eyebrows at that reply.
"Because it's half past 10?" You spoke and stepped a bit closer into her office. You were already wearing your coat and had a bag thrown over your shoulder. She laughed, finally lifting her gaze from the papers to look at you. “Oh please, I’ve been here much longer than that before, you know that.”
"Is that supposed to make it better?" You questioned, hands in the pockets of your jeans. She shrugged and put the papers down, then sat back in her seat, crossing her arms over her chest. “You’re still here too you know”
"Yes. But I stay this late every few months. You do it 90 per cent of the time." You pointed out. She raised her hands defensively, but it was clear she was struggling to think of a good comeback. “Just admit you care about me."
"Ok. I care about you." You simply replied and chuckled a bit as Kate looked a bit surprised. Her hands dropped, and she tried to think of what to say next but for once in her life, she was at a loss for words. “Oh uh, well uh, yeah-“
"Look at that. Kate Lethbridge-Stewart speechless." You said and grinned slightly. You stepped forward and closed the file in front of her. Then you lean forward and saved the file on her computer, turning it off after. "Come on."
Normally she had argued, but something about you had completely thrown her. With a sigh, she looked at you. “I do still have work to do, you know?”
You turned your head and looked at her. You smiled softly and booped her nose. "Yes. Tomorrow." You said and pulled back, standing up straight in front of her desk again. Arms crossed and looking at her expectantly.
She scrunched her nose and frowned. Despite the fact that you were younger than her, she couldn’t bring herself to boss you around. She sighed heavily and stood up.
“Fine. But I’m driving”
"Be my guest." You said and smiled triumphantly at getting her to stop working.
She grabbed her car keys and jacket and motioned for you to follow her out. “I’ll even stop to buy ice cream on the way home too."
"Really?" You jumped up and down a bit excitedly and grinned at that. You didn't have any ice cream at home anymore, so this was a fantastic idea.
She laughed softly at you looking like an excited child and nodded. “Yes, yes. But you have to be quiet when I park, so you don’t wake up the kids."
"You're taking me to yours?" You asked her surprised. She gave you a look as she locked her office door.
“Yes. I’m not dropping you back home half an hour away at eleven at night. You can sleep on the sofa or take the spare room. Whichever you’d prefer." A bit surprised by the turn of events you smiled warmly at her.
"Oh, thank you. That's very kind." She smirked and placed a hand on the small of your back, gently guiding you down the hall. “Oh don’t sound so surprised. I’ve let you stay over before”
"Yeah, when I was injured from a mission. And I always assumed you just felt guilty." You said and shrugged. Then you added: "Which you never need to. I never blame you. No one does." Her hand on your back moved up and down gently as you entered the lift.
“Oh I know that” She pushed the button to send the lift to the ground floor and waited a short while for it to start moving before speaking again.
“I don’t blame myself anymore. Sometimes I just want you there. Especially after…things. You understand the stuff we deal with, and you’re not afraid to call me out when you think I’m wrong. It's refreshing." You grinned and stepped out of the lift as it pings and the doors open.
"Well, someone needs to talk some sense into you." She rolled her eyes but couldn't stop herself from smiling. She led you to the car and unlocked it, holding the front passenger door open for you. “Very funny. Just get in the car”
"Yes, Ma'am." You said and saluted as a joke, grinning at her and getting into the car. She shut the door and walked round to the drivers side, opening her own door and getting in. She started the car and leaves the underground car park. The drive was mostly silent, neither of you speaking much but when she pulled up outside a supermarket, she turned to you. “What flavour do you want?”
"Mint Choc Chip." You replied excitedly. Kate laughed gently and started to get out the car, calling back to you over her shoulder. “I should’ve guessed. You can come in if you want, just keep quiet please."
You jumped out of the car and ran after her. "What? You think I'm gonna embarrass you in the supermarket?" Kate raised an eyebrow as you caught up to her but smiled fondly. “With the way you like to joke around? Yes” She turned back around and started walking into the shop.
"Don't tempt me." You teased grinning mischievously. She looked back at you and tried to give you a stern look, but was unable to keep the smile off her face. "Don’t you dare. You know I’ll just make you sleep on the sofa instead of the guest room."
"What's the alternative? Your bed?" You teased and grinned stupidly as you followed her. If anyone had told her a few years ago she’d be standing in a supermarket car park, talking to an attractive woman half her age about sleeping in her bed, she’d have never believed them. She stopped in her tracks for a split second and looked behind her, blushing slightly. “I’ll make you sleep on an armchair”
At that you chuckled and held your arms up defensively. You made a show of 'locking your mouth shut' and followed her. “Good”
She continued walking towards the frozen aisle, a slight smirk on her face as she tried to hide her red cheeks. She glanced sideways at you, seeing you ‘locking your mouth’ and tried not to laugh. “You’re such a child. How old did you say you were again?”
You pointed at your mouth and acted innocently, like it was actually locked, and you couldn't answer. Kate rolled her eyes and took hold of your chin, so you actually were forced to look at her. “I’m trying to have a conversation. Unlock it.”
You made a show of unlocking it and throwing the key away. "I'm 31." Kate nodded slowly as she started to look through the ice cream, still holding your chin. “And you still have the same sense of humour as a 12-year-old."
"But I made you laugh." You said triumphantly and poked her side. Kate let go of your chin to swat your hand away but was still smiling. “That’s a fair point”
She found the tub of mint choc chip she wanted and started walking again. “Come on. Let’s go pay and get home before I change my mind and make you sleep in the kitchen."
"Close to the food source. Might not be so bad." You grinned as you jogged after her. Kate glanced at you and rolled her eyes, trying to hide that she was amused by you.
“If the kids wake up and find you sleeping in the kitchen, they’ll never let me hear the end of it. You know they already think it’s funny you keep staying over." You chuckled amused as you walked over to the self-checkout. "I bet they do." Kate scanned the ice cream and then fished her wallet out of her bag. As Kate paid you took the ice cream from her to make it easier for her.
Kate smiled when you took the ice cream from her, and she grabbed the receipt from the machine, putting it away in her back pocket. “Come on then, let’s get going.” She started to walk out of the shop, holding the door open for you on the way.
"Thanks." You smiled and stepped through the door. Together you walked back to her car. Kate got in the driver's seat and started the car, making sure you were in before she sets off towards her house. You both thought about what it means that Kate let you stay over so often, so willingly. The kids were probably right to think it slightly strange. Kate kept her eyes on the road, her hands on the steering wheel almost clenching slightly. She seemed to hesitate for a moment before asking in a low voice.
“Do you think the kids get the idea you and I are…together?” You shrugged and looked at her for a moment. You hesitated, thinking about how much you should reveal. You decide to just joke.
"Your fault for always letting me stay over." Kate sighed slightly, pulling up outside her house and killing the engine. “But friends can stay over. It’s nothing strange, I’ve got a spare room.” She got out of the car and started walking towards her front door, rummaging in her jacket pocket for her keys. You followed her, the ice cream freezing your hand. You furrowed your brows a bit at the lack of a laugh from her.
"They're kids. They care about your happiness. They probably just want you to have someone, and they already know me. It'd be convenient for them." You said and shrugged. You'd effectively hidden your massive crush on her until now. You weren't going to ruin that now. But you still wanted to assure her a bit. She had good, kind kids.
Kate finally found the keys in her pocket, pulling them out with a small triumphant noise. She began to unlock the front door, but as she spoke, she looked over her shoulder at you. “You might be right. But do you really think they’d want me to be with someone like you?” She was trying to keep her voice light and airy, but you had known her long enough to know she was overthinking something.
You stepped into the house behind her, trying to lighten her mood with a joke. "I'll try and not take that personally." You teased as you took your shoes off inside.
For once, Kate didn't laugh, she seemed too lost in her own head. She shrugged her coat off and hung it up before slowly turning around. “You know I didn’t mean it like that." She paused, suddenly unable to meet your eyes.
"Hey. What's wrong? You're overthinking something. I can see it." You said softly as you hung up your coat as well. A slightly concerned look on your face. Kate shook her head, still unable to look directly at you. She swallowed and forced out a small chuckle.
“It’s nothing. Really. Just a thought” Finally, she lifted her gaze to meet your eyes, but almost instantly regretted it. She’d never realised how attractive you were. She could feel her heart racing, her hands clenching slightly.
"Kate. Talk to me. I'm your best friend." You said and smiled warmly at her. Kate opened her mouth, suddenly finding herself unable to find the words. She took a deep breath, but before she could speak, a voice from upstairs broke through the moment.
“Mum? What’s going on?” Sarah appeared at the top of the stairs, clearly woken up by the noise. You looked up to the top of the stairs. Seeing the thirteen-year-old stand there in her pj's. You smiled at her. "Hey, sweetheart."
Sarah smiled when she saw you, her eyes flicking between you and her mother. “Hi. I thought I heard you guys”
Kate suddenly regained her ability to speak, looking up at her daughter. “We’ve only just got back. Sorry if we woke you up, love."
"We'll be quiet now." You assured her. "We just had a long day at work."
Sarah nodded slowly, but she clearly wasn't quite done speaking to her mother. “Can I talk to you? In private” Kate looked surprised and glanced at you. She turned back to her daughter. "Yeah, of course. Just give me a minute”
"It's okay. I'll be in the kitchen." You softly assured her and smiled as you took the ice cream and left for the kitchen. Kate watched you leave and turned her attention onto Sarah, motioning for her to sit on the stairs. Once Sarah was down, she stood opposite her. “What did you want to talk about?”
Sarah fidgeted slightly, fiddling with the hem of her pyjama shirt. “It’s a little bit weird.” Kate gently placed a hand on Sarah’s knee and smiled reassuringly. “Honey. You can talk to me about anything."
You smiled softly to yourself as you heard Kate's voice echo into the kitchen. She had always been an amazing mother. Even if she didn't always believe it.
Sarah took a breath and finally spoke, her words coming out quietly. "I’m worried about you. Gordon is too." Kate’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion. “You’re worried about me? Why?”
Sarah played with the hem of her shirt again. “You’re always working. You never go on dates.” She looked at her mother with a mixture of confusion and slight concern. Kate was surprised. She hadn’t actually realised her daughter was paying so much attention to her dating life but as she thought it through, she started to get where Sarah was going. “You think I’m lonely?”
Sarah nodded slowly. “I want you to be happy, mum. You’re always working or looking after me and Gordon.” Kate softened slightly, suddenly realising how mature her little girl had become. She reached out and gently tucked a lock of blonde hair behind Sarah’s ear. “You want me to get a partner?” Kate asked, a little amused but still impressed.
Sarah sighed and tried to think how to explain it. She knew her mother was intelligent, but sometimes she needed to be a little more direct. “Yeah…I guess” She paused and glanced at you in the kitchen. Before looking back at her mother. “Especially someone like Y/n.”
At that your head shot up. Up until now you had obviously heard them talk but had tried to ignore them. It wasn't polite to eavesdrop. But this... You had to listen to this.
Kate’s heart skipped a beat, and she suddenly had to concentrate on keeping a neutral face. She swallowed and tried to appear as indifferent as possible. “What do you mean, ‘someone like Y/n’?”
Sarah rolled her eyes, already sensing her mother’s defensiveness. With an amused tone she spoke again. “Mum, I’m thirteen. I know when adults like each other.” Kate suddenly felt her cheeks flush. She couldn’t let Sarah see how flustered she was.
“Wha- Sarah, we’re just friends!” That was a pathetic cover up, and she was well aware of it. Sarah raised an eyebrow at her mother, clearly not believing her. “Mum. It’s so obvious. You like Clara. Just admit it." Kate’s stomach felt like it had dropped out of her body. She’d known that the kids suspected something for a while but now her own daughter was openly calling her out. She couldn’t come up with an excuse, but she wasn’t going to admit it. “Sarah. I’m too old” It was a weak response, and she knew it.
Well, that was just a load of Bullshit, you thought. What did she mean? Too old? What a ridiculous idea.
Sarah rolled her eyes again. For an intelligent woman, her mother could really be stupid. She took a breath and spoke again, her voice gentle. “You’re not ‘too old’. You just a bit scared she doesn't want you, Mum."
That one hit closer to home than Sarah could have realised. Kate’s mind flashed with thoughts of you, thoughts that had been plaguing her for months. She was a workaholic, middle-aged parent with all the emotional baggage she could imagine and Sarah was right. She didn’t think you’d want her.
You still listened intently, seemingly holding your breath just to not miss a single word. You hadn't imagined Kate could think something like that about herself. She was so incredible. Sure she was also gorgeous and beautiful. But she was so much more. So smart and cunning. A brilliant leader and UNIT head. How could you not be in love with her?
Sarah glanced into the kitchen, noticing you by the counter. Then she turned back to her mother, noticing her sadness. She suddenly felt bad for her mother and spoke again, gently this time. “You do realise Clara is completely in love with you, right?” Kate’s heart skipped another beat. Love? That was a strong word.
Sarah hit the nail right in its head, you thought. You were absolutely, hopelessly in love with Kate.
Kate couldn’t do anything but silently shake her head. In her opinion, there was no way you could be in love with her. She was old and worn out, working most of the time, you were young and beautiful, what on earth could you see in her?
You decided to step in and free Kate from her misery. "You know the ice cream is melting." You said as you stepped out of the kitchen and leaned against the door frame, looking at Kate and Sarah.
Kate was snapped out of her thoughts, turning to glance at you. The sight of you leaning against the door frame, a slight smile on your face sent her heart into overdrive again, and she tried to keep her voice as steady as possible. “Yeah yeah, I’m getting to it”
"Go to sleep, Sarah sweetheart. Your mum needs some relaxation. It was a long day." You said softly and smiled at Sarah warmly. Sarah nodded slowly, but she couldn't resist looking between you and her mother once more before reluctantly heading back upstairs. Kate turned, watching her daughter’s door close before turning back to you, her eyes wide.
“How much of that did you hear?” For a moment you just looked at her, arms crossed and casually leaning against the door frame. "Enough." You simply reply.
Kate swallowed nervously and took a small step closer to you, her heart still racing from her conversation with Sarah. She couldn’t even look you in the eye, instead her gaze was fixed firmly on your shirt. “You probably think I’m pathetic, don’t you?”
That made you furrow your brows in confusion a bit. When you spoke your voice was much softer. "Why would I think that?" Kate took a deep breath and continued to avoid your eyes, her hands clenching into small fists. How could you not think that? She was old, miserable and lonely. You had the whole world to explore, but you spent your time with her. “Come on, Clara. Look at me. I’m pathetic, you can admit it.”
You studied her for a second and then reached out for her hand. You grabbed them and softly unclenched them. "Why would you think that?"
Kate’s hands shook as you unclenched them, making it clear how nervous she was. She could feel her eyes starting to sting with tears. You were surprised by the sight in front of you. It was so unusual for Kate. To be this nervous and this unsure of herself. You'd never seen her like this. Despite that, she forced herself to continue. “Because it’s true. I’m older, I’m miserable…and I’m obsessed with you” That comment made you smile in absolute delight.
"Obsessed with me, huh?" You teased. Kate felt her cheeks flaming, her eyes darting back to yours as a tear slipped down her cheek. “Yes. Obsessed. Absolutely in love. Do you need me to be even more graphic?” A sassy remark. That at least was more like Kate.
"Hey, no." You said much softer again as you saw the tear on her cheek. You reached out and wiped it away. "Don't cry."
Kate’s body shuddered gently at your touch, a shiver running through her spine. She takes another step closer to you, her chest practically touching yours. She finally manages to hold your gaze with her own tear filled, watery eyes. “I do, you know. Love you. Completely and hopelessly." You smiled happily at her.
"Then it's a good thing that I'm hopelessly in love with you too." You spoke sweetly, your hand cupping her rosy cheek. Kate’s eyes widened, her heart leaping up into her throat. She didn’t believe you, you couldn’t possibly be in love with her, could you? She swallowed and tried to find her voice and when she did, it was just a whisper. “You can’t be…”
"Why not?" You asked softly, hand still on her cheek and gently brushing your thumb over her cheekbone. Kate couldn’t find an answer. Your touch was too distracting, your voice too soft. She let out a shaky exhale, closing her eyes and gently leaning into your touch. “You’re too young. You’re beautiful, smart, and you could have anyone you want”
"Good thing I want you." You whispered, lips suddenly mere inches from hers. You hesitated for a split second before you pressed your lips against hers. And it felt like everything you had craved for months. And it felt like everything you had craved for months. Better than anything you could have ever imagined. Her lips so soft, so cautious against yours.
Kate let out a small, quiet gasp as your lips met hers. She practically melted into the kiss, her body almost going limp, her mind hazy from the sudden sensation of your lips on hers. It was a short, blissful moment before she snapped to her senses and pulled back, a shaky hand covering her mouth as she studied your face. “You…you…” Kate stammered, suddenly finding herself speechless.
"Speechless again. Two times in one day." You teased softly, a mischievous gleam in your eyes as you looked at her. "I'm sorry I just kissed you. I could have asked." You softly apologised then.
Kate immediately shook her head, her eyes still wide. “No, no, do it again.” There was hardly a moment between the words leaving her mouth and her grabbing your shirt, pulling you back in for a second, more needy kiss.
You hummed delighted as she pulled you in and practically crashed her lips against yours. You let your hands run down her hips and slide into the back pockets of her pants, squeezing her arse slightly. As Kate felt your hands on her arse, a very unladylike noise to slip from her lips. She suddenly realised that they were still in the hallway and the risk of Sarah or Gordon waking up and seeing them was very real. She gently pulled away, her hands still gripping the front of your shirt. “Not here”
You nodded and bit your lip a bit to pull yourself together. Your eyes wander over her, she was slightly blushy, lips parted beautifully. "Bedroom?" You whispered. Kate’s heart raced again when you whispered that. Her brain couldn’t come up with a reason to say no anymore. At the rate you were going, you were definitely not going to end up eating the ice cream anytime soon. She reached out to grab your hand, intertwining her fingers with yours. "Yeah…bedroom. Now."
You gently but firmly tugged on her hand and pulled her up the stairs not even bothering to turn off the lights downstairs. At the top of the stairs, you couldn't help myself. You pulled her against you and kissed her hungrily. Your hands tightly holding her hips. Kate gasped again, her back slamming into the wall as you pin her against it.
“We have to be quiet” She said breathlessly as she broke the kiss off for a moment and looked into your eyes. Despite her words, she tugged on your shirt, pulling you back in for another kiss, her hands pulling the shirt up impatiently. You kissed her back, desperately. Only breaking it off for a second to let her pull your shirt over your head, leaving you in just your bra. The shirt fell to the floor somewhere without any care.
As soon as your shirt was off, Kate’s hands were on you again, roaming over your exposed skin. At the same time, she started planting needy kisses on your neck, occasionally biting down gently.
"Kate..." You trued to hold back a moan as your head fell to the side slightly, instinctively giving her better access to your neck. "The kids..." You try to remind her, the words coming out shaky and breathlessly.
She pulled away for a moment, glancing down the hallway towards the kids rooms. “You’re right…bedroom…” She took your hand again and practically dragged you down the hallway. As soon as the bedroom door closed, she was on you again. Her lips crashed into yours as she walked you backwards towards the bed. Your hands desperately tugged on the buttons of her blouse, opening one after another until it hung open and showed a hint of her blue bra. Your legs hit the bed frame behind you and nearly made you topple over onto the bed.
Kate let out a shaky sigh as you undid the final button and the material of her blouse fell open. Her hands immediately went to your hips, grabbing them to guide you backwards onto the bed. She started to move to kneel over you, but she was suddenly hit with a thought, a thought that made her stop in her tracks. “The kids…we should lock the door." You nodded and caught your breath for a moment.
"Yeah, you're right." You supported yourself on your elbows and looked up at her, waiting for her to go and lock the door. She let her eyes rake over you as you looked up at her with your messy hair and flushed cheeks, and she had to resist grabbing you again. She forced herself to break eye contact and go lock the door. When she had crossed the room and locked the door, she returned to you, a smirk on her face. “Now where were we?"
"Come here." You said and reached your hands out for her, desperate to feel her lips back on yours again. A shudder ran through Kate’s skin as you beckoned for her, and she was happy to obey. Within seconds, she was back on the bed with you, straddling your hips. She bent down and brought her lips back to yours, starting to unbutton your jeans as she did so. You pushed the unbuttoned blouse off her shoulders, letting it fall away. Immediately your hands found her breasts, trailing over the blue fabric of her bra and then cupping them gently. Kate moaned against your lips, the feeling of your hands on her already driving her crazy. She broke the kiss, breathless, and reached behind herself to unclasp her bra. She pulled it off with one hand, letting it fall to the ground as she looked back down at you, a smirk on her face. “Like what you see?” You nodded mindlessly, eyes glued to her naked breasts, breath caught in your throat.
"Very much." You replied biting your lip. Your hands can't keep themselves off of her. Immediately finding their way back to her breasts. "So goddamn beautiful." You whispered as you cupped her now naked breasts. They fit so perfectly into your palm, the skin warm under your hand.
The other woman moaned a little louder as your hands found her again. She couldn’t handle it anymore, your hands on her and your eyes studying her hungrily was too much. Her hands started to travel over your body, tugging at the denim of your jeans again. “Pants…off. Now."
You pinched her nipples and slightly tugged on them, reluctantly letting go. Quickly you help her with your pants, lifting your hips and kicking them off the bed as soon as they were off. Then your hands travelled down her smooth stomach and to the button of her slacks. Sh shivered as your fingers trailed very her skin and start undressing her. Once her pants were unbuttoned, she was too impatient and simply moved off the bed. She pushed her pants down and stepped out of them, leaving her in just her underwear that matched her discarded blue bra.
"Panties off." You managed to say, voice shaky with desire. You shifted a bit on the bed, till you were lying pretty much in the middle of it. "I want you on my face." You said, still looking at her. You were so desperate to taste her, to have her come on your tongue.
Kate’s breath caught in her throat and heat pooled in her stomach. She glanced over to you and saw the way you were sprawled out across the bed, the words you just spoke ringing in her ears. She quickly pulled her panties down and moved back to the bed. She climbed up, her legs on either side of your hips, a smirk on her face. “You sure you can handle me?"
"Don't get cocky." You said but grinned amused. Your hands rested on her hips and impatiently pulled, wanting her to move up. Kate smirked again as you pulled on her hips, but she let you, shifting forward until she was kneeling over your face. Her hands found the headboard of the bed, gripping it as she looked down at you, a bit breathless already.
“This what you wanted?” You nodded, a hungry look in your eyes as you looked up at her. Your senses were flooded with her. Her smell, the feeling of her skin under your hands... "You've got to be quiet. The kids..."
Kate swallowed nervously, her eyes fluttering shut as your hands ran over her skin. A slight shiver ran through her body as your words registered in her hazy brain. She knew it was going to be hard work keeping quiet with what you could do to her with your mouth. She could feel her thighs already shaking slightly as she spoke. “I’ll…I’ll try”
"You better." And with that you pulled her hips down, resulting in her sitting right in you. Your tongue immediately running through her wet folds.
Kate let out a small gasp at the same time as you pulled her down. Your firm hands holding onto her hips kept her stable. It took a few seconds for her to find her voice again as her hands clung to the headboard firmly. “If you keep…oh…keep doing that, it’s g-going to be difficult to be quiet."
You simply hummed against her clit, delighted by her sounds even though you knew she was definitely being too loud. Kate moaned softly as you hummed against her sensitive skin, her legs were already shaking above you, and it took all of her willpower not to let any more sounds slip out. One hand left the headboard and went to her mouth, she bit down gently on the skin of her knuckles, hoping that that would silence her sounds of pleasure a bit.
Her eyes fell closed, the combination of your hands on her hips, your tongue on her and your soft moans sending vibrations through her were almost too much. She had to fight hard to stay up on her knees, not wanting to crush you as she felt her legs turning to jelly. She was doing a good job of keeping herself quiet for now but her teeth were digging hard into the skin of her knuckles and she struggled to find some sort of control. "I…I think-“
You looked up at her as she spoke, by kept feasting on her. Your tongue swirling over her clit, alternating with soft sucking. Her taste on your tongue filling your mind with a blissful haze. And she looked so stunningly radiant over you. Breathless and stuttering, skin slightly sweaty and hair messy. The way she bit down on her knuckles, desperately trying to stay quiet. She’s interrupted by another moan escaping her as she tried to speak. She tried again, determined to get a full sentence out this time. “I…I’m c-close, and I don’t th-think I can be quiet."
Your eyes widened a bit, and you nodded, trying to quickly think of a solution. Then, in a swift motion, you lifted her off your face and flipped you around. You hovered over her, one hand coming to cover her mouth the other reaching between her legs and sliding through her folds before skilled fingers concentrated on her already sensitive clit.
The gasp that left Kate’s lips at being suddenly flipped onto her back was quickly muffled by your hand. The same hand that she had bitten down on now went to grab the pillow next to her, her fingers finding the fabric and gripping hard. Her eyes rolled back and a stream of strangled moans escaped against your hand, her back arching off the mattress. You're completely mesmerised by the sight in front of you. Kate looked absolutely gorgeous in that moment, desperate and in pure pleasure. Hair messy and sweaty, slightly sticking to her forehead. It was a shame you couldn't properly hear her moans.
Kate looked at you desperately, like there was nothing that she wanted more in the world than you. She moans against your hand again, the muscles of her stomach contracting as her back arches off the bed again. She let go of the pillow and her hand was suddenly on your shoulder, her nails digging into your skin, her knuckles going white from the pressure.
"You look so beautiful." You whispered softly as you looked down at her. Your fingers picked up speed a bit and pressed against her clit firmer.
Kate tried to speak, but it turned into a moan instead. Her body was shuddering and shaking under your touch and her legs were trembling. She managed to pull your hand away from her mouth to look up at you, her eyes pleading. “I…I need you…p-please."
"What do you need? I'm here, darling." You spoke sweetly, not getting what exactly she wanted from you. Kate practically whimpered as you spoke, your sweet words almost sending her over the edge right then and there. She was desperate for you, your touch, your voice, all of you. There was a faint hint of a blush in her cheeks when she looked up at you. “Inside…I want you…need you."
Your eyes widened as realisation hit you. A soft oh leaving your lips. Your fingers moved down, through her folds and obeyed her wish. She was wet enough for your fingers to easily slip inside of her. Kate let out a strangled moan at that, her hips bucking up against your hand. There was little space left between you now, and she brought her hands up to your face, her fingers tangling in your hair, pulling you down to bring your lips to hers. You gasped slightly into the kiss. It was a messy, desperate kiss as her body rocked against your touch, searching for more friction, more of that wonderful pleasure you gave her. Your fingers easily moved inside her, curling up a bit and hitting that sweet spot while you kept frantically kissing her, sloppy and needy.
Another wave of shudders ran through Kate, and she couldn't help the whine that left her lips as you hit that sweet spot. She’s completely overwhelmed but just couldn't get enough. Her legs wrap around your waist, pulling you closer and her hands start roaming anywhere they can touch, any part of your body. You could feel the way she started to tense under your touch, the way her walls clenched around your fingers. Her lips parted, another moan undoubtedly already on her lips. You quickly silenced it with another kiss, your tongue slipping into her mouth. She can’t think anymore, all coherent thoughts go out of the window, the only thing on her mind is you, the pleasure you’re bringing her. Her legs pull you even closer and her hands scratch down your back in a desperate attempt to bring you impossibly closer, leaving red streaks in their wake.
You could feel the moment she came. Her walls clenched impossibly around your fingers, her back arched closer into you, and she couldn't kiss you back as her lips fell open, eyes rolling back into her head. She trembled under you, desperately clinging onto you. Her legs went limp against your body and the hand in your hair went slack. Her breathing came in short pants as she tried to catch her breath, her chest rising rapidly as she shuddered against you. It took a few seconds for her mind to start working again and for sense to return. Her eyes slowly opened as she gazed up at you through the messy strands of hair that had fallen onto her face. Her voice was shaky and weak when she spoke. “Come…come here…”
You pulled your fingers out of her and gently brushed the hair out of her face. A soft smile on your lips. "I'm here, sweetheart."
Kate gave you a weak smile as you tucked her hair back. She pushed herself up against the pillows a little more, so she was now sitting against the headboard, and she immediately reached out for you. Once you were sitting up as well opposite her, her arms wind around your shoulders, pulling you closer. Her voice was still shaky, her eyes still a little glazed over as she speaks. “You’re wearing too much”
"I think you're a bit too exhausted for more." You softly spoke, leaning into her embrace and kissing the side of her face tenderly. Kate let out a quiet huff at your words, a pout forming on her face as she heard the implication that the night was over in your words, which it wasn’t if she had anything to do with it. She looked up at you, a determined look in her eyes as she spoke. “I’m fine…I’m not tired, you…you haven’t finished yet." Your heart melts away a bit, equally parts from her sweet words and from the cute pout on her lips. Something you had never seen on Kate's lips.
"That doesn't matter, sweetheart. You need sleep." You spoke softly, playing with her hair as you leaned against her. Kate continued to pout a little at your words but deep down she knew you were right, she was absolutely exhausted. The orgasm had tired her out more than either of you had realised, but she wasn’t going to admit that, no matter how weary her body was. “But…I can’t just leave you like that…”
"Yes, you can. It's been a long day, you worked hard. You're exhausted." You gave her another kiss on her temple and moved away from her gently. She whined, a sound so adorable you would have never guessed it could leave Kate Stewart's lips.
"I'm gonna clean you up, and then we'll sleep. No discussion." And to your surprise she actually didn't argue again. She simply let you clean her up and then cuddled into your side when you climbed under the covers with her.
The lights turned off, you're settled and already half asleep when a thought stroke you. You let out a sudden laugh. "What?" Kate mumbled sleepily, not even closing her eyes. She really was exhausted.
"I think we'll have to buy new ice cream." You replied fondly. You had left it in the counter, and it was surely completely melted by now. And likely wouldn't be good anymore by tomorrow, cause neither of you was going to stand up again. Kate chuckles amused, albeit very sleepily in your arms.
"Doesn't matter."
You kissed her temple and smiled.
"Yeah, you're right." Cause in the face of this moment, nothing else mattered.

Being held captive had definitely not been how you had imagined your day to go. But here you were, in a dark and dirty cell with a flimsy excuse of a light. You were all alone, though you knew Kate had to be somewhere close. The cell had no windows, nothing to give you any sort of information about neighboring cells or where you even were.
Kate and you had been undercover on a high-class event. It was one of those typical companies that had very suddenly gotten very popular and managed to get their products into nearly every home in Great Britain. And in 99 per cent of the cases that meant problems. Big, big problems. Home invasion kind of problem.
You had originally simply meant to try and gather some intell, but one thing had led to another, and you'd been caught and thrown into cells. Which was where you were now. You were torn between kicking the uncomfortable heels off you'd been wearing and keeping them on as to not stand barefoot on the disgusting cell floor. In the end you chose the latter option and let out a sound of disgust as you felt something wet on the soles of your feet. The hemline of your dress trailed over the dirty floor, and you were already making plans on how you'd burn it later.
You hoped the walls between cells weren't too thick as you knock against the wall loudly. "Kate?" You yelled hoping she was close by and could hear you. You heard some very faint shuffling, clicking of heels and then...
"Y/n?" Kate's voice rang through your cell, a bit muffled by the wall but clear nonetheless. You let out a relieved breath and closed your eyes for a second.
"Yeah, it's me. Are you alright?" You asked a bit concerned. You hadn't been hurt, but that didn't mean she couldn't have been hurt.
"I'm fine. You?" That was good. You both hadn't been hurt. Yet, at least.
"I'm fine." You replied and slid down along the wall until you were sitting on the floor, leaning against the wall. You figured your dress was already ruined, so it really didn't matter anymore.
"You're still wearing your heels." You stated, remembering that you had heard the click on the floor a few minutes back. You heard very quiet chuckling.
"Bloody uncomfortable." Kate replied, and you heard her kick them off and suddenly her voice was much closer to your ear again.
"Don't know why I kept them on." She spoke, her voice sounding a bit clearer. You supposed she had sat down as well.
"Don't sit down! Your suit was so beautiful, you'll ruin it." You protest. It really had been gorgeous. A nice blue, tailored to her body with a white blouse underneath. You hadn't been able to keep your eyes off her.
"Too late." She simply said. It really was a shame about the suit. But you supposed she had enough other ones. And truth be told the suit really wasn't the important thing right now. You were unharmed. Kate was unharmed. That was enough for now.
"The others will know something's wrong if we don't report to them." You said after a few silent moments, probably more to calm yourself down. Kate was trained and more experienced in situations like these. She probably wasn't half as nervous as you.
"They will. And they'll find us." Your happy she indulged you for a moment and simply assured you. No judgment. You had always been a bit more fidgety and nervous about stuff like this. And dark underground rooms, without even a window really didn't sound like things that you'd put on your list of 'Things I absolutely love'.
"What's your favourite colour?" You suddenly asked, it had been the first thing that had come to your mind. You wanted to distract yourself and talk to Kate. And you'd always wanted to know more about her. Though you could have asked a more intelligent question.
"Blue." She simply answered. To be fair, you could have guessed that. Made absolutely sense. For a moment you stay silent again.
"Mine's purple." You said. She hadn't asked. But she was Kate. She'd talk to you about the greatest nonsense and listen to you babble on for hours if it calmed your mind.
So you asked more questions. Unimportant ones. But they took your mind off the matter. You asked her what her favourite book was. The thousand autumns of Jacob de Zoet. You didn't know it, which surprised you not one bit.
You asked about her favourite movie, her favourite musicians and bands, what she did in her free time besides gardening and playing bridge. You asked why she started working at UNIT and why she had become a scientist.
The questions morphed from unimportant and superficial, to personal and intimate to absolutely ridiculous.
"Do you have tattoos?" You asked next. A surprised snort was heard from the other side of the wall. You raised your eyebrows, though of course Kate couldn't see that.
"God, no." She replied finally and that made you laugh.
"You sound awfully negative about the matter." You stated, curious on her take on tattoos. You had a few yourself. Not really visible and all rather small. But you wouldn't be opposed to more.
"I wouldn't mind one with a meaning. For my kids for example. But even that would have to be small and easy to hide. I think they can look good. Just not for me." She explained, ever the polite and supportive Kate. Never to judge people for what they chose to do. It was one of the reasons she was such an incredible boss and head of UNIT. You hummed in response, your head lent back against the cold stonewall.
"Do you? Have tattoos I mean." Kate asked back. You nodded and then remembered she couldn't see you. So you answered.
"I do actually. But not a lot and I can hide them." You thought, but maybe you imagined it, that you heard Kate hum softly. She asked about the tattoos after a moment, and you told her about every one and the story behind it. She just let you speak and after some time you weren't even sure if she was still there. You panicked slightly and stopped talking.
"You still there, Kate?" You spoke, voice just slightly worried. Scenarios of the most horrible things filled your mind for the few seconds that it took Kate to answer.
"I am. Sorry. Your voice is very soothing, and I'm really tired." You felt warmth rise into your cheeks and a stupid smile graze your lips. She liked your voice. But she was right. It was late, and it had been a long day. You couldn't see the sky, but you assumed it was long dark.
"Maybe you should sleep a bit." You offered, tone a bit softer. "I'll stay awake. I'm not tired." A lie. And Kate probably knew that it was a lie. But she didn't comment on it. She simply thanked you, and then you didn't hear her talk for quite some time. Quite frankly you were bored out of your mind. You couldn't watch the stars, not that they'd be visible in London, you didn't have a phone or a book or anything that would be remotely interesting. You didn't even have something to tell the time, so you had no idea how much time had passed since Kate fell asleep.
"Y/n?" A very sleepy voice asked from the other side of the wall. You smiled fondly. "Yeah?" You asked softly.
"Thought you might have fallen asleep as well." She responded and then yawned loud enough for you to hear. You chuckled.
"I promised to stay awake, didn't I?" You sweetly answered, getting simply a hum from Kate as an answer. She was probably still half asleep.
"You know...when we get out of here, we could go to dinner." You said after a few minutes of silence. It was a bit pathetic that the time you finally found the courage to ask was in a cell where you couldn't see her, but at least you asked. As an answer you simply got silence. At least for a few seconds.
"Do you mean that?" The hidden question was clear. Do you really want a date with me? Or is this just a heat of the moment thing 'cause we're captured together. Your answer was as simple as the question.
"Yes."
Silence again. You already expected her to just ignore you and act like it never happened. "Ok." Her voice was soft, nearly hesitant. Again it was silent. You were the one to break it.
"You could wear a dress. I've never seen you in one." You spoke softly. You really never had. Whenever you went with her to any sort of event, like today, she'd worn a suit.
"I bet you'd look amazing." You added after a moment as Kate hadn't yet answered. Your voice was careful but sincere. You were sure Kate would look amazing in a dress.
"You think?" She asked back and sounded uncharacteristically unsure of herself. Smaller and more hesitant. It surprised you.
"'Course. It'd look great. Maybe one that shows off your legs." Silence. You already thought you had said something wrong. Had been too forward, maybe crossed a line. But then she spoke again.
"They're really nothing special. And besides, I've gotten old." Silence again. But simply because you didn't really know what to answer. Was she being for real? Did she actually think that was a problem?
This evening had brought out many truths. From personal and maybe a bit too private questions asked earlier, over your revealed crush on her, to insecurities you had never guessed even existed. But then again, everyone has them. You have them. People you see in the street have them. Why not Kate?
"Are you pulling back out of that dinner?" She asked, voice small and quiet. She nearly sounded afraid that you actually would.
"No, of course not. Don't be ridiculous." You quickly answered and leaned your head back against the stone. "I just guess I hadn't ever thought about the fact that someone as beautiful as you could have insecurities about the way they look." You admitted softly, shrugging more for yourself than anything else. She couldn't see it anyway.
"Thank you." She eventually replied. A bit stronger again, more like the Kate you're used to. You'd gladly remind her of it every day.
It was no surprise that a few hours later when Osgood and the guys had finally found you and gotten you both out of that dirty shithole Kate hugged you a bit longer than usually. It hadn't surprised you either that her cheeks were tinged pink just a tiny bit and when you gave her a kiss on the cheek.
A minute later she was all business again, and you smiled amazed at her ability to slip into the role of the leader so easily.
