For the 'give me a character' ask, Lae'zel π
Thank you for the ask! Let's go with Lae'zel!
How I feel about this character β I like her, it is especially interesting to see her progression and development through the story. Many people don't like her, but I see her honesty and straightforwardness as good traits.
All the people I ship romantically with this character β Gale! Really, Gae'zel is a captivating ship. I romanced Lae'zel on my Gale origin run, and it fit so perfectly. When she proposes to spend another night, he tells her he wants to cuddle. He teaches her what romance is, she is ready to protect this istik from anyone including himself. When they travel the Astral Sea, she shows him the libraries of the Githyanki people. Gale teaches her Common, for example, takes her to the libraries of Baldur's Gate and Waterdeep. They're so cool together.
Astarion. The idea that at first they both crave for only physical connection, and then they both discover the feelings they can have for each other. An interesting dynamic. And they both like a partner who can bite! Literally, Lae'zel can eviscerate Astarion, but that makes him even more intrigued and invested into the relationship.
My non-romantic OTP for this character β Shadowheart. I want these girls to have a bromance. To talk about partners, to find solace and understanding in religious brainwashing trauma. To be there for each other when they lose everything they held dear.
My unpopular opinion about this character β she's actually very brave, and she is ready to do anything to protect her people. And she comes to think of tadpals as her people eventually. Yes, she's initially racist, but she never kills anyone for fun (like the Urge tells Durge to do). And she comes to understand that istiki are no less good than githyanki by the end of the journey.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon β I wish she could participate in the party after the final battle!
I hope you like the answers!
Some people say making all romanceable BG3 companions pansexual was "for commercial reasons". I think there was an idea behind it:
Whoever you are, you can be loved and cherished.
It doesn't matter who the main character is in terms of gender, species and race (or race and subrace in game terms), they have a chance to be loved. A comfort for traumatized souls.
Imagine a person start playing the game where they know there is romance with companions, trying to flirt with someone they like and being rejected. It would be heartbreaking. And it is not the game easily replayed, my first playthrough took 200 hours.
What I want to say is... Thank you, Larian Studios, for this masterpiece of a game. There is nothing like it, and I doubt there will ever be.
A year ago my husband told me that I definitely need to start playing this hyped game that had been finally released. A year ago I bought the second copy of the game, turned it on and closed my eyes when the mindflayer tadpole screamed and rushed from the screen into me. A year ago my husband told me not to miss a funny wizard in the rock.
I didn't expect this game to change my life. I didn't expect it to show me so much of myself. I didn't expect it to be a gateway to a vast community of wonderful people. I didn't expect it to give me friends from different parts of the world.
Baldur's Gate 3 did all that and more. It etched itself inside my heart and became more than just a media to me. I saw myself in it, and I analysed myself through it. Baldur's Gate 3 was the first game I started playing on a difficulty higher than "Normal" (or "Balanced"). The first game I played more than once. More than twice. More than thrice.
I haven't been a part of the fandom for several months, but then I discovered a community of creative and supportive people, BG3 fandom in general and Galemancer fandom in particular. It is a huge chaotic fandom where I was able to find my place. With other fandoms I was just a ghost lurking in the shadows, here I am proud to be a part of it.
Thank you, Larian Studios, for the best game (of the year, decade, century). It saved my soul, it gave me peace, it showed that I am not alone. You gave me a place to be myself, even if I am an insufferable talkative romantic nerd.
Happy Anniversary, Baldur's Gate 3! π
