……….

[Setting: 2012 Lair]

[Time period: After Kavaxas Arc (2012); After Kraang Invasion (Rise)]

……….

After the shock of a blue portal spitting out four turtles, each different kinds and sizes—

“AGAIN WITH THE ANOTHER DIMENSIONAL US?!”

“That would be ‘Nardo’s fault”

“Fascinating. They’re all different species. So that one is a box turtle, a soft shell, and—“

“Gee, that’s really interesting Donnie. I just got another call from someone named ‘I don’t give a flying fuck!’”

“Raphael!”

— and sorting out what to call each other and not get confused, 8 three-dimensional turtles stood around getting to know each other. Leonardo was standing with Raphael and Raph. His hot headed brother seemed somewhat intimidated by his counterpart’s size. In turn, the alligator snapper was slightly jealous at Raphael’s natural instinct of being good with animals and that he owned an alien space turtle. As gentle as he seemed, the other Raph wasn’t good at getting affection from animals, particularly a creature named Mayhem. Donatello and Donnie were having a conversation at a rapid rate talking about science and machinery (“Oh it’s so nice to have an intellectual conversation!”). Leonardo smiled softly watching his younger brother’s brown eyes sparkle as he could finally hold a conversation that he was passionate about and didn’t have to dumb down the words. Michelangelo was introducing Mikey to Ice Cream Kitty. The youngest terrapin of the bunch was starry eyed over the mutant cat.

All in all, it was a good time… except for one turtle.

Leon was at a loss in this dimension. His counterpart was nothing like him. He was serious, focused, short, and all-in-all kind of boring. He also seemed very bossy. But even all that was forgivable. It was the fact that everyone had seemed to push him to the side while they got to know each other. His first thought was to go to the youngest pair of siblings. They had broken off from the group first and went to the kitchen, yelling catchphrases:

“BOOYAKASHA!”

“COWABUNGA!”

“You should try combining them”

“Oh me gosh!”

“BOOYAKABUNGA!!”

Leon poked his head through the curtain and watched them. The two were grabbing ingredients out of the cupboards and fridge and talking at a rate and level only a Michelangelo could comprehend. Leon smiled softly, happy his baby brother could be as carefree as he wanted without annoying another turtle. He decided to let the two of them be, before going to the next group of turtles, the Donnie’s.

Donnie and Leon had always had similar mannerisms, temperaments, and actions. Both of them could bounce off another's thought, either for agreements or arguments, the latter being the most likely. But that is where they ended. Donnie was extremely intelligent and preferred machines and science to people… or creatures. Leon needed to have eyes on him and chat with someone who would be willing to listen. Donnie too craved praise, but was often more confident in his work than Leon. He pushed the metal door open and saw his twin and the other Donatello talking about robots or something…

“What’s up Donnies?!” He interrupted their conversation, nearly knocking some liquid in a beaker over in the process. “Oops. That’s on me”

Donatello blew out a breath of limited patience and Donnie just rolled his eyes. “Did you need something, ‘Nardo?”

“Just wanted to see if you needed any help with your nerd stuff.”

“It’s actually quite fascinating,” Donatello started going off on a tangent. Leon groaned aloud. Apparently this world’s Donnie had a speech mode too. Donatello flashed Leon an annoyed look. Donnie snarked.

“Please ignore my dum-dum of a brother. Nardo, don’t you think you can be annoying elsewhere?” Donnie asked. While he wasn’t usually dismissive of his twin so quickly, he was delighted to meet another genius like himself. One that he didn’t have to trick anyone into a machine to make them match his own. He could use large words and the other Donatello knew perfectly well what he was talking about. He had been in the process of talking about one of his metal robots, Metal Head— Michelangelo had named it and was the undecided namer of mutants and machines— when Leon had interrupted.

Leon smirked amusingly, masking his hurt. Donnie’s barbs didn’t always strike a blow, but they hurt worse than anyone else’s on the rare occasion.

Actually, it hurt a lot more than he let on if he thought about it. It was rarely Donnie’s intention to hurt anyone’s feelings. He didn’t understand how his blunt words could affect other people and Leon usually did a terrible job of showing how much it did. And it isn’t like he hadn’t gotten his purple-clad brother back. Heck, even in one of the most stressful moments of their lives, he couldn’t help but gleefully yell out:

“Donnie’s wrong!”

“The world is ending, yet the barbs continue” he had mocked back, huffing irritably.

But now, when Donnie called him dumb in front of the other genius stung more than it should have. He wasn’t sure if he was overreacting. He probably was. He mentally shook off the feeling.

He waved the two brainiacs off and went back to the living area where both Mikey and Michelangelo were animatedly talking as a TV show of a couple guys, a lady, and a ghost of sorts were riding on horseback, saying cheesy dialogue. He cleared his throat and they turned and smiled at him, though Mikey seemed a little upset to be interrupted.

“Do you know where the Raphs and other me is?”

Michelangelo grinned and jerked a thumb backwards. “Dojo. I think your Raph is loving my Leo’s dedication to training.”

Leon rolled his eyes. Yet another thing he and Leonardo didn’t have in common. If it weren’t for the blue mask, Leon wouldn’t have guessed that this… stick-in-the-mud that put Raph’s Raph-chasm to shame was his counterpart.

He wondered if it was an oldest sibling thing that made his counterpart and his big brother act so… blehhh. Then again, Raph had fun on missions and at the lair. Leo had a mix of both surprise and the look of someone who was used to turtles popping through portals. Then again, Donatello had said they’d encountered other counterparts before. But after the initial disturbance in their day, Leo seemed to just be… extremely… boring. The most expressive Leo seemed was at Raph’s personality. Apparently this world’s Raph was a bit of a hothead, but he had a gentle spirit under his gruff exterior. You just had to be patient and get to know him better.

He thanked Michelangelo and was about to leave when an idea occurred to him.

“We should go skateboarding!”

“Another time, Leon” Mikey smiled “Michelangelo is telling me about this show, Crognard the Barbarian”

Mikey and Michelangelo turned and began to talk animatedly and gathered close to the TV

Leon didn’t know why, but his baby brother rejecting his offer to go have some fun hurt more than ever. Mikey was the turtle Leon looked to when he needed someone to hype him up or go and be silly with. Donnie was cynical and Raph spent more and more time worrying about looking after the three of them, further increasing his Raph-chasm. And now Mikey seemed to have found someone that was like him in almost every way. Who was Leon to protest that or compete even? God, he was so right when he’d poured out his heart to Hueso. He wasn’t anything without his brothers, and now? He wasn’t anything in comparison to their counterparts.

After standing there for a couple minutes, drowning in self doubt, while being completely ignored by Michelangelo and Mikey, he headed to the dojo where he could hear the sounds of metal on metal, and a calm voice offering guidance. Inside he couldn’t help but admire the serenity of the place. Raph and Raphael sparring was the only thing out of serenity. The slider was a bit surprised this dimension’s Raphael could hold his own against his big brother, given how much smaller he was. His counterpart stood by the large tree eyes watching the two red-banded turtles fight, occasionally commenting on Raph’s fighting techniques. No one had noticed him.

Leon couldn’t take this anymore, even though he kept a fond smile on his face. He got that sparring took concentration, but his big brother was happily bouncing off Raphael’s snarky retorts, adding some barbs of his own. He was a bit surprised Raph was trash talking, he was fairly polite. But that might have been him just trying to set a good example. It was good to see his brother “relax” and enjoy sparring as much as he did. But right now, Leon just wanted the reassurance from his big bro that he was important and interesting to be around… and that wasn’t happening. He willed Raph to come over and put a hand on his shoulder and bend down to his level having another one of his serious talks… the ones Leon dismissed but now wanted more than ever. But he guessed that he would just have to deal with being second place to… well everything.

He grinned and turned around to leave when he heard Leonardo call out:

“YAME!”

……….

To say Leonardo and Raphael were surprised by the demeanor of the other Raph was an understatement. Raphael was a bit suspicious if he was a “Raph.” Leo wasn’t sure how to process that. His own counterpart was extremely different. The two had exchanged pleasantries, but that had been their only interaction so far. Leon had seemed to be more fascinated with exploring the place or being with the Mikeys. Leo didn’t mind; Leon would come talk to him if or when he wanted, though he was looking forward to talking to his own counterpart. He was also a bit wary of another dimension visiting. That usually meant the Kraang were up to no good or some world catastrophe was about to hit. Thankfully, they explained that Leon’s swords could create portals and they’d somehow wound up making one to Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo’s dimension.

Anyways, Leonardo learned pretty quickly that while Raph had a much more relaxed aura, he still liked using brute force and had a temper. Raphael seemed rather pleased about that and Leo couldn’t help but worry slightly, as the two red banded turtles talked about how the best plan in a fight was smashing things to bits.

Leonardo also connected well with Raph as both of them were the eldest brothers and got generally annoyed when their little brothers didn’t listen. They both ranted a bit when Raphael left to go get Chompy Picasso to show to Raph.

Eventually, Leonardo had started a conversation with Raph about training and was very excited to talk to someone who was just as passionate about training. While his brothers were skilled and still trained, they didn’t have the same passion as he did. The only other one was his father. Leo still kept expecting his father to be in the dojo whenever he entered. He wondered if that would go away anytime soon.

While Raph was the bigger of the two, Raphael seemed to best him in skill. But Raph didn’t seem to mind.

“Pops is usually watchin’ his shows, so we don’t get a lot of training time in” Raph explained to the two of them. “But he taught us stuff about using our surroundings and blending in with the shadows!” Raph also shared the knowledge of his Hamato ninpo and his Gram-Gram had taught him. Leonardo and Raphael were surprised she had been the start of the Hamato clan and was dated so far back in genealogy. They were even more flabbergasted to learn that her name was “Karai” and her father was Oruku Saki and was possessed by some demonic armor, becoming their dimension’s Shredder.

Leo and Raphael took turns explaining their own dimension’s Karai and what she was like. Raph was surprised and got a bit misty eyed upon learning she was their sister and still… alive. Raph explained how she had sacrificed herself to buy them time to escape, but her spirit now somehow had connected with their April O’Neil. In turn, Leo and Raphael struggled keeping their emotions in check while they had pointed to the shrine in their father’s memory and explained simply that their father had been slain by their Shredder and Leonardo was now the sensei of the Hamato Clan. Leonardo still hated that title. He knew he would never be worthy of it. And if he somehow did? He still wouldn’t like it. That was reserved for Master Splinter alone.

After some hugs on Raph’s part and condolences were exchanged, Raphael insisted upon getting back to sparring. Raph seemed to hesitate at first but soon jumped back in. Leonardo made a mental note to talk to his younger brother tonight and make sure he was okay. Sparring was one of Raphael’s ways to cope and deal with his feelings whereas Leonardo found himself being able to refocus by giving guidance or orders. Raph had asked to have some lessons, so Leonardo was more than happy to instruct and regain composure. Raphael also guided his counterpart and in turn learned some cool moves.

Midway through the sparring session, Leonardo was instructing Raph on something when he noticed his own counterpart slip in. He had an amused and slightly smug grin on his face and lax posture. To the average person, or mutant, Leon appeared to be chilling. However, Leonardo took one look at his counterpart and could see how well the younger turtle was masking what he was truly feeling. Leo had that look down and it was easy and saddening to see in Leon’s face. He took note of how the smile didn’t reach Leon’s eyes. They seemed distant and slightly melancholy if you were looking hard enough. They also seemed to be locked on his older brother, seeking out his attention that wasn’t being given. A few minutes more of this, and Leon had grinned while starting to turn around and walk out the room and Leonardo found himself calling out, “YAME!” before realizing it. Raphael stopped of course, but Raph seemed a little confused.

“It means ‘stop’ in Japanese,” Leo explained as Raph nodded in understanding. Leonardo cleared his throat before speaking again, “If you guys don’t mind, I’d actually like a chance to hang out a bit with Leon for a bit.”

The two red clad turtles turned in surprise, taking note of Leon’s presence. Leonardo watched as several unhappy emotions flashed across Leon’s face, though he hid it under witty dialogue and a mischievous grin. Raph asked Raphael if he could see Chompy again to which he agreed. They said their goodbyes and left Leon and Leonardo in a slightly awkward silence. Leo cleared his throat again— the scar tissue from his fight during the Kraangs’ second invasion was getting irritated— and gestured for Leon to join him, which he hesitantly did.

Leo gave him a gentle smile, “I was meaning to talk to you earlier, but I got carried away with training with our brothers.”

“Psshh, all good,” Leon put on a casual, disinterested face, not aware of how well Leo could see through it. “Hardly noticed”

“Uh huh,” Leo gave his counterpart a look, but let it go. “So, how is it going with our other brothers out there? I haven’t had much of a chance to speak to them either.”

“Oh, just dandy. Donnie’s doing his nerd things with Donatello and the baby brothers won’t stop going from activity to activity.” Leon prattled in a tone that Leo couldn’t quite place. It wasn’t quite jealousy or sadness.

“So, Raph told me you’re now the leader of your team? How’s that going for you?”

Leon wasn’t sure why but the way it sounded upset him. He crossed his arm glaring into Leo’s sapphire blue eyes. “Why? So you can gloat about how much better you are than I am?”

Leo looked surprised but decided to say nothing as his younger counterpart ranted on. Leo figured this was a long time coming of holding too much in, if Leon was anything like him.

“I get it! Okay! I screwed up with the kraang attacking us! I was selfish and overconfident! I didn’t want to be the leader! I didn’t even ask for it! Just out of the blue—pun totally intended— pops appoints me as leader! That’s Raph's job! I don’t train or meditate or whatever it is you do! That’s not me! I just want to be the face man of the team! That’s all I’m good for anyway.”

Leo was taken back and before he can stop himself he’s glaring right back at the slider with a hand gripping his shoulder. Leon looks surprised.

“I don’t know what things are like in your dimension,” Leo starts. “But you are so much more to your brothers than what you think you are. You're their brother and they would do anything for you. I didn’t ask how it was going to gloat. I wanted to see how you were truly feeling. As different as we are, we both seem to have the tendency to put up a facade of what we’re really feeling. I get what you’re going through on some level. I’m not perfect, in any way. I have screwed up leading my brothers on missions and fights more than I can count, but they always had my back and were there for me. That’s what family does.”

Leon’s eyes widened and stared at his counterpart before looking down in shame. He was flabbergasted that Leo could read him so well. He didn’t seem insulted by Leon angrily thinking Leo was flawless. It was comforting to know that the older turtle had his struggles too. He didn’t know why he had an outburst like that, especially with someone he wasn’t familiar with.

“S-sorry,” he stammered. “I, I didn’t mean—“

Leonardo squeezed his shoulder and asked him to take a deep breath and focus. Leon was hesitant but did so and felt a lot calmer. Huh, maybe this meditation was worth something after all.

Leo smiled, “All good.” The two sat in a peaceful silence, Leon breaking it off once again as something in Leo’s spiel hit him.

“You said you messed up before?” He ducks his head again, the way it sounds. But Leo let’s out a small laugh.

“Ha. Yeah, many times. And I’m still learning.”

Leon looked down. Leo’s misdeeds probably weren’t as bad as his. God, he couldn’t believe it took a kid from the future to get through him. Leo must have sensed something again— the dude was really observant— as his ocean colored eyes shifted, staring at him intently before speaking,

“One time, I didn’t tell my brothers and Master Splinter that I was dressing up in black gear and burning down buildings with my sister and her childhood friend, Shinigami, resulting in Donnie getting badly injured.”

Leon’s jaw was on the ground. “Wait. What?!”

Leonardo shot him a wry smile. “Not such a goodie-two-shoes, huh?”

Leon laughed and felt some of the tension and awkwardness dissipate

And after a few more stories on Leo’s slip ups as the leader and eldest, the tension seemed to melt away completely and Leo found his younger counterpart bombarding him with questions about his position as the team’s leader. He shared some of his father’s wisdom when he was struggling with his own issues of being the leader, minus a few things he thought were detrimental and didn’t agree with anymore.

“What if,” Leon swallowed. He didn’t want this to happen. It nearly did when he led against the kraang. It was such a disaster. “What if I fail?”

Leo stared sympathetically at him before straightening. “This isn’t what you want to hear, but it is the truth. As the leader, failing is always a possible outcome. But that doesn’t mean you give up. There is always hope to hold onto. And your brothers and team will be there to back you up and smack sense into you. You don’t have to be alone. That’s something I’m still learning.”

“‘Where there’s a Hamato, there is hope’” Leon quotes. Leonardo gives him a curious look and Leon lets out a sad laugh. “My gram-gram Karai said that. We met her briefly. She sacrificed herself to save us from our Shredder.”

Leo squeezes his shoulder, “I’m so sorry. She seems wonderful. In my dimension, Karai is my sister. She was raised by The Shredder after he took her away from our dimension’s Splinter.”

Leon lets out a relieved sigh. It’s nice to know that while she isn’t alive in his world, she’s here in this one. She lives through April, but it isn’t the same. He hadn’t been around during the discussion of Karai and Splinter, so he feels much more awful when he asks, “Where is your Splinter, by the way?” Leo’s face falls and he stands slowly and walks over to the shrine that is on the side of the room and carefully takes a picture off the top shelf. A tall and stern rat mutant stands with a soft and proud look in his eyes and four young turtles smiling brightly are in front of him.

“My father was slain by the Shredder,” Leo says, his voice tight and says no more and Leon gets it. There’s nothing more to be added and given by his stance, he guesses Leo doesn’t want to talk about it right now.

The two sit soberly back down before Leon turns the conversation back to being a leader. He asks Leo about his beginning challenges as the leader. Leo couldn’t help but laugh for a bit before explaining himself.

“Being a leader is crazy and not at all what I expected,” Leo admitted, staring at his father’s shrine, echoes of his father’s voice ever present. “I used to annoy my brothers to no end saying dumb one liners and quoting Captain Ryan.”

Leon raised an eye ridge. “Who’s Captain Ryan?”

Leo’s eyes widened and stared at his counterpart before launching into a “shortened” version of the best show ever, Space Heroes. Leon bounced excitedly and began talking about Jupiter Jim, the two blue-clad turtles going back and forth animatedly talking about their favorite shows. Leo was jealous that Leon got to meet Jupiter Jim and eagerly agreed to give them a watch as long as Leon was willing to watch Space Heroes. The two exited the dojo and Leo was about to go off to his room to get his Space Heroes comics when Michelangelo ran to Leonardo.

“Safe!” The orange banded terrapin exclaimed as he ticked himself behind his eldest. Mikey came over behind him holding some stuffed animal that looked like a rabbit with floppy ears. Leon recognized it and his eyes sparkled and high fived his little brother and got a disapproving look from Leo.

“MIKEY!!! I AM GONNA—“ Raphael and Raph stopped short of an unamused Leonardo putting distance between them. Leo lets out an aggravated breath and turns to his youngest, hands on his hips.

“Michelangelo,” he starts, sternly and thankfully, his baby brother indulges him and listens to the repeated lecture on not teasing Raphael with things he’s terrified of. He also gives the same lecture to the other dimension’s Mikey. Surprisingly, the other Mikey finds himself obeying Leonardo. Something about him seems… almost motherly. He can’t explain it. Perhaps it’s the way that Leonardo is standing or the way he’s speaking. He seems much older than a nineteen year old. Leonardo also turns and makes sure both Raphs are okay, before lightly reprimanding both Raphs in not dishing out too harsh a retaliation towards the youngest.

Leon is a bit amazed at how quickly his counterpart defused rising tension. Michelangelo says “Yes, mama,” teasingly, causing Leo to look slightly irritated and Raphael smirk and fist bump the youngest. Leon continues to curiously observe Leonardo act “motherly” to all of them, whether it’s giving Leon advice or helping him fit in or praising both Donnie’s— the younger Donnie looking like he was gonna have an aneurysm. He whispered to Leon, “does that count as parental praise?!” Leon shrugs and Donnie takes it and begins showing Leonardo several more of his designs, soaking in the praise Leonardo gives him, while looking a little concerned. The eldest in blue also hung out with Mikey and Raph, “adopting” them both as brothers, taking interest in Mikey’s art and cooking, or combatting with Raph and helping perfect techniques.

In turn, Donnie showed the counterparts Jupiter Jim and Lou Jitsu films. Everyone was yelling variations of “HOT SOUP!” by the end. Mikey and Michelangelo tried to combine it, but it was too much a mouthful, so “Booyakabunga” stayed the united catch phrase between the two dimensions. They swapped stories and Leo was very impressed with Leon’s strategic skills, from making the Statue of Liberty laugh— “SEE! Violence is funny!” “Raphael, get off Michelangelo!” — to using sword fish as weapons. It soon turned into Donnie and Leon trying to one up each other. Raph settled the two somewhat and told more tales of the mystic city and the villains they faced, all while partaking in pizza.

At the end of the day, Leonardo and Leon were pouring over Space Heroes comics, finally, and Leo turned and smiled at him.

“How are you feeling now?”

“Welcomed.”

I truly enjoy Sir Leon of BBC Merlin for a number of reasons, but the thing that will always stick with me about him is that he willingly shoved a weapon into Merlin’s hands, and did not fear for Arthur’s life one bit when it was mentioned that Merlin was intent on killing him. The utter faith that man had in Merlin, though unfortunately at that time misplaced, just absolutely cracks me up every time.
