A Life of Learning Shaina Tranquilino June 1, 2024 In the grand classroom of Earth School, every day presents us with new lessons. Unlike traditional educational systems, Earth School offers an immersive curriculum that goes beyond textbooks and tests. Here, we learn not only with our minds but also with our hearts and souls. This education, though less formal, is profoundly transformative, shaping who we are and how we navigate the world.
Embracing the Journey
From the moment we are born, Earth School enrolls us in its endless journey of learning. Our first lessons come from our immediate environment. We learn to trust, to love, and to communicate, guided by the nurturing presence of our caregivers. As we grow, our interactions expand, and with them, the complexity of our lessons.
Lessons of the Heart
Compassion: One of the most fundamental lessons Earth School teaches is compassion. Through our interactions with others, we learn to feel and understand the emotions of those around us. Whether it's through the joy of a friend's success or the sorrow of a neighbor's loss, these experiences open our hearts and teach us the value of empathy.
Forgiveness: Another vital lesson is forgiveness. Holding onto anger and resentment can be a heavy burden. Through the trials and tribulations of relationships, we learn that forgiveness is not about excusing bad behavior but about freeing ourselves from the chains of negativity. This lesson often comes with time and reflection, teaching us to let go and move forward with a lighter heart.
Love: Perhaps the most powerful lesson of all is love. Love comes in many forms—romantic love, familial love, friendship, and even self-love. Each form teaches us about connection, vulnerability, and the beauty of giving and receiving love unconditionally. Love is the foundation upon which all other lessons are built, the ultimate expression of our humanity.
Lessons of the Soul
Resilience: Life is filled with challenges, and Earth School provides countless opportunities to develop resilience. Through personal losses, failures, and hardships, we learn to adapt, to pick ourselves up, and to keep going. Resilience is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and a crucial lesson for navigating the ups and downs of life.
Purpose: Finding one's purpose is a profound journey of the soul. Earth School encourages us to explore our passions, our talents, and our dreams. This exploration often requires introspection and the courage to pursue what truly matters to us. In discovering our purpose, we find meaning and fulfillment, guiding us towards a life that feels both intentional and rewarding.
Connection: Beyond the physical, Earth School teaches us about our connection to the greater whole. This might be through moments of awe in nature, the realization of the interconnectedness of all life, or spiritual practices that transcend the mundane. These lessons remind us that we are part of something larger, fostering a sense of belonging and peace.
The Lifelong Student
In Earth School, we are lifelong students. There are no diplomas or graduation ceremonies, only continuous growth and discovery. Every experience, every person we meet, every challenge we face, contributes to our education. This perspective encourages us to embrace life with curiosity and openness, recognizing that each moment holds the potential for learning.
Earth School's education of the heart and soul is a beautiful, intricate journey. It shapes us into compassionate, resilient, and purpose-driven beings, connected deeply with ourselves and the world around us. As we navigate through this grand school, let us remember to cherish the lessons, embrace the growth, and honor the profound wisdom we gain along the way.
How We Age Matters: Making Every Year Count Shaina Tranquilino July 14, 2024

Aging is an inevitable companion. As we grow older, the notion of age transcends mere numbers on a calendar. It becomes intertwined with the quality of our experiences, our relationships, and the legacy we leave behind. Indeed, how we age profoundly impacts not just our own lives but also those around us and the broader community.
Rethinking Longevity: Quality Over Quantity
In today's world, the pursuit of longevity often dominates discussions about aging. Advances in medicine and technology have extended our lifespans, but the real essence lies in how we fill those years. Aging gracefully isn’t merely about adding years to our lives but adding life to our years.
Cultivating Meaningful Connections
At the heart of a fulfilling old age are meaningful relationships. Whether with family, friends, or the community at large, nurturing these bonds provides emotional sustenance and a sense of belonging. Shared experiences, laughter, and support networks become invaluable as we navigate the challenges that come with aging.
Pursuing Passions and Purpose
Retirement should not be seen as the end of productivity but as an opportunity for personal growth and fulfillment. Engaging in hobbies, pursuing new interests, or even starting a second career can bring renewed purpose and satisfaction. Age should never limit our ambitions or desire to contribute meaningfully to society.
Prioritizing Physical and Mental Well-being
Taking care of our bodies and minds becomes increasingly crucial as we age. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate rest are foundational to maintaining physical health. Equally important is nurturing our mental well-being through activities like meditation, lifelong learning, and creative pursuits, which promote cognitive agility and emotional resilience.
Embracing Change with Resilience
As we age, adapting to life’s inevitable changes becomes essential. Whether it’s adjusting to new living arrangements, health challenges, or evolving roles within our families, resilience allows us to navigate these transitions with grace and acceptance. Each phase of life presents its own opportunities for growth and learning.
Leaving a Lasting Legacy
Ultimately, the mark of a life well-lived lies in the impact we have on others and the world around us. Whether through mentorship, philanthropy, artistic expression, or advocacy, our contributions can inspire future generations and shape a better society. Aging with intentionality means reflecting on the values we hold dear and imparting them through our actions and words. Aging as a Journey of Meaning
How we age truly matters. It’s about embracing each year with gratitude, purpose, and resilience. By fostering deep connections, pursuing passions, prioritizing well-being, and leaving a positive imprint on the world, we not only enhance our own lives but also enrich the lives of those we touch. Let us celebrate the wisdom and vitality that come with age, and strive to make every moment of our journey count.
As we continue to redefine what it means to grow older, let’s remember that the true essence of aging lies not in the passing of time, but in the richness of experiences and the depth of relationships that define our lives.

Tonight’s study topic: The 3 Difficult Practices —teachings by Pema Chödrön
1. Notice when you’re hooked. 2. Do something different. 3. With enthusiasm, make this a way of life.
Grateful to Pema, for her devotion to the practice.
Grateful to her root teacher, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, who shared the concept of and teachings on Basic Goodness.
“Basic goodness, available to anyone, at anytime, just by connecting with the immediacy of our experience. Take heart. The more we practice in this way, the more confident we become in our basic goodness, the more access we have to our inherent openness and wisdom.” -Pema
May all beings be free from suffering and the root of suffering. May all beings know happiness and the root of happiness.
