I know/feel like this kind of takes away from his character growth and Kai stans are free to correct or add on but Kai's "I should've been the green ninja" but in a "I should be the one to bear the responsibility instead of you because your just a little kid and thats not fair" kind of way.
Chapter 1 ----- 🌊Swallowed🌊
 NINJAGO HAVOC AU
I’ve had this au in my head for a while, and the season finale for season 15 finally gave me the inspiration/motivation to write it! So, hope you enjoy it! Comments and reblogs are super appreciated!Â
*Post-season 15 AU*
————————-
Every part of the ocean looks the same.
It’s just water. There were no distinguishing landmarks, unless they stuck up out of the surface. There was no change to the “landscape”. It was like a vast, dark, and deep desert. A desert that pulsated, as if it were alive. A living desert, full of life, just beneath its moving skin. A desert that simultaneously destroys and gives life. A desert full of gaping mouths that will swallow you up if you get too close. And when you’re swallowed, it gives you up as food to those residing inside it. It was fluid, it was so big it….it…
It made his head hurt.
He had no idea how long he had been flying above the ocean. It was so…so vast. The night sky made the ocean look like a second, moving sky. A churning void of black ink and glittering lights. He pulled a scroll of paper from his bag.
He had tried to be strong.
He had tried not to run away.
After all, he had his parents now. Oh but what did they know? Sure, it wasn’t their fault they had vanished, but, it didn’t change the fact that they weren’t there. Nobody was there, when it was just him and her. Alone, against the world. She was the only one who understood. She was the only one who could truly comfort him. Sure, the others were family, and they did their best, but it was nowhere near…she wasn’t there anymore.Â
He had promised he wouldn’t leave again but-
But this was different.
She left first.
And now?
Now she was a part of the ocean. Kai wasn’t even sure if she was… if she had a physical form to her anymore. Water can’t- water can’t hold its shape unless it’s contained in something. That he knew. He was certain there wasn’t a Nya shaped container in the ocean. But then again, their elemental powers, and the magic they had seen, didn’t exactly obey the regular laws of science, so why should this.
His elemental dragon flapped in place as he stared at the map he had snagged on his way out. He didn’t know he could summon a dragon anymore, but somehow, he had managed. Maybe it was out of anger, or grief, or guilt, or…something. He didn’t know what he was feeling, but whatever it was had caused him to create a dragon.Â
He ran a hand through his hair, keeping the other one on his dragon’s back, on the map, so it wouldn’t blow away in the steady breeze. He sighed, letting his hand fall limply onto his dragon’s back. His dragon let out a low rumble, attempting to comfort Kai. It didn’t work.
His mind felt just like the ocean below him. A tumultuous thrashing of darkness and confusion, of hurt and guilt, of sadness. He just wanted his sister back…was that too much to ask?
The crashing of the ocean was his only reply.
His dragon let out another low rumble, louder this time, snapping Kai out of his thoughts. He gave the elemental dragon a half-hearted pat, still holding the map down with one hand. He reached back into his bag, pulling out a black pen and adjusting himself. Fortunately, the soft, warm glow of his elemental dragon gave off just enough light for him to see the map.
It was a map of Ninjago and the surrounding ocean. The ocean around Ninjago had been marked with at least 100 crudely written x’s, starting from the top of the map and going down. She couldn’t have gone far…right? She wouldn’t just-just leave them. Surely, she would have gained back more of herself with time, she would-should have started to remember them.
She wouldn’t just…forget about the ninja. She wouldn’t forget about Jay, the love of her life, the man who Kai now hoped he could eventually call “brother” one day. Jay was a dork, but he was good for her, and she loved him, Kai had come to accept that.
She wouldn’t forget Cole, the one who was able to hold his own against her, strength wise. The kind-hearted soul of the group, the big brother, the shoulder she had cried on. A true friend, especially to her. They had a special bond that he couldn’t put into words.
She wouldn’t forget Zane, or Pixel, she had fixed them countless times, they talked for hours on end about stuff Kai couldn’t begin to grasp. Zane was such a steady calm to her, to all of them in fact. And she was a rock for him too.
She wouldn’t forget about Lloyd, the one they considered their little brother. The one she had stayed with when Zane had…when he couldn’t-She wouldn’t forget Lloyd, the one she whole-heartedly supported and cared for.
She wouldn’t forget about their parents. Sure, she hadn’t known them, but they were back now. And things were finally…they had a chance to build something that had been torn from them.
She wouldn’t…she wouldn’t forget about him. Right?
He should have been better. He should have heard her when she walked away. He should have stopped her. It…. was just like Zane. Like everyone else on this seemingly cursed team. It should have been him. He would have gladly taken her place, had he had the chance to. After all, he’s just the loud-mouthed, cocky ninja. The idiot, the screw-up. It would have…it would be better if he had taken Nya’s place. Or Zane’s.
He was sure he was cursed to watch everyone else’s curses play out. Why…why does everyone he starts to love have to be ripped from his grasp, in some way or another. He…was starting to doubt it. He had gotten just about everyone back! Or maybe this…”curse” was just preparing him for the biggest hit yet.
His sister. His little sister…
It should have been him.
Kai blinked, bringing himself back to the present. Enough.
He blinked again, trying to get his eyes to stay open as he moved to mark the map. His hand hesitated above the paper. Where was he again?
He looked around, seeing nothing but the black void of water and the night sky. His elemental dragon’s reflection shimmered in the inky water down below.Â
He…he couldn’t have gone too far from where he was last. He looked back at the paper. Which x had been last?
He was starting to realize how…pointless this search method was. Nya could be in any part of the ocean.
He had started searching the ocean two days ago, and had been searching nonstop since. He figured she would be a bright…glowing blue, like she had been that night. Or that she’d be a giant water dragon. But he hadn’t seen anything like that. What if she was deep inside the ocean? What if…what if…
He rubbed his eyes with his right hand, smearing a bit of ink across his face. His vision was blurry. He hadn’t slept, hadn’t eaten or drinken anything since that morning…he wasn’t sure how many days ago. It had been days, he knew he’d seen the sun set at least twice. Or was it three times?
Funny how there was a bunch of water below him, even funnier that he couldn’t drink it. But he wasn’t going to quit. Ninja don’t quit. Brothers don’t give up on their sisters.
Lloyd had been so worried about him. They…they all had been. But he would never forget the look Lloyd gave him the night before he decided to start his search. That sad, pitiful, desperate look that seemed to bore its way through his whole body. A full-body-wrenching look of “please don’t go.” It was Kai’s fault. It was all…He should have done better.
He had tried, he really did, but he failed, again. He couldn’t keep himself together. He had almost stopped sleeping entirely, barely ate, barely moved from that dreaded room. Surrounded by books, scrolls, texts, and just about anything else that could possibly tie into saving Nya. They had all tried to help him, but Lloyd was the most persistent. Kai…he had pushed him, he had…pushed them all away.Â
He felt terrible now, but…he needed to find her. He wanted…no, no…needed her here, with him, with all of them.
He blinked some more, trying to sit up straight. A excruciating wave of dizziness racked at his brain, and he fell back down into a hunched position, gripping his head with shaky arms. What was happening, and why so sudden?
His elemental dragon let out a surprised grumble, turning its glowing head towards him. Was it just his eyes, or was his dragon…fading? It looked like a dying fire. Kai gave himself 30 seconds before the world stopped spinning at 80 mph.Â
“I’m…..I’m fine, bud. Let’s keep going,” Kai started, trying to get back up. He finally succeeded after a few minutes. He sat, panting harshly. He was…so tired. He lifted his arms to prompt his dragon to move, but he couldn’t seem to keep his eyes open.
Suddenly, his body went limp, against his will, and his hand slipped from the reins and his map.
He was falling.
He was barely able to blink open his eyes, and watched as his dragon let out a pained roar, before dissipating into nothing but a shower of glowing embers. His bag, pen, and map were falling above him. It was almost like he was moving in slow motion.
He turned his head to look behind him, seeing the oceanic void, desperately opening one of its many mouths to swallow him up. That wouldn’t be too bad. Drown this and all his other failures. Nya was there…in that void. Would she be happy to see him, or upset that he’d given up? He shouldn’t be so scared of the ocean anymore…he would get to see Nya again…right?
The pounding of his heart, still terrified, rang in his ears.
He stared down at the ocean as he fell, finally willing himself to fall into the darkness as millions of watery teeth and hands grabbed hold of him and pulled him into their hungry depths.
Hi! I've been following your profile for a while now and I love how you draw Ninjago characters! This ask was inspired by your recent post about Kai's powers and reminded me of an hc of mine concerning Kai specifically; if either of his younger siblings are cold (such as perhaps nearly drowning once or twice, cough cough Lloyd cough cough) then he'll use his elemental power to raise his internal temperature, trap them in a hug, and warm them up. The rise in body temp might not affect him, so sick younger sister or brother? Nope you aren't going anywhere, you're staying right there Nya/Lloyd and you are recovering. P.s. Lloyd going limp pretty much because dragon instincts go brrrrrt and he loves being warm
Hi! We loved this headcanon so much that someone (Kass) magically summoned a comic script at 2 AM. Someone else (Rach) then actually decided to draw the whole thing. Enjoy!
Bonus RGB sibling reunion
FR though, thank you so much for the ask! We love talking with you guys and this hc is like the cutest thing tysm
