You know what? I’m tired of hearing about soulmates.

Can I hear some commotion in the club for soul enemies? For destined rivals and loathing at first sight? For tearjerking tradegies about star-crossed nemeses and duos who both give it their all to destroy the other, yet can’t find the strength to carry on in their abscence? The twisted, poetic dance between two people that can’t even tell who they are anymore without their adversary- their forever opponent, and no one else’s. And the best part is how, even knowing that true victory and defeat both would throw all of this away, they will still keep playing that game to win. They’ll pursue that chase even when it means they may loose their ability to connect with the more reasonable, peaceful world around them. Because they wanted so badly for more than that, and they found someone who doesn’t only understand that part of them, but respects them for it- in fact, needs them for it just the same. For better or worse.

Honestly we need to please PLEASE further normalize comfort OCs, fan-inspired OCs, fan-AUs, OOC tags, etc.

I feel like what this becomes born of so often are people who get really latched onto some ideas and qualities they can project or add onto a canon inspiration, but they’re so darn afraid of distinguishing that extension as their own original creativity + the canon material. Of putting something out there that’s theirs and dear to them. They’re afraid of putting their own ideas out there without grasping at certain interpretations of [thing that is already popular] to somehow… validate it? And understandably there is an unfortunate sort of vulnerability that can come with that. But the double edge of that sword lends itself to the actual growth and self esteem development that can come from authenticity.

And in any sense, I’m all for mischaracterizing canon assets- in an honest and upfront way. Transformative art is still art in its own right and it’s a a common way for younger and inexperienced creatives to toy around with concepts or to try a hand at accentuating, deconstructing, or paying tribute to what traits of the source material they love.. or hate! Instead of clowning on the OP, hell, I’ll give them credit tbh for owning their personal divergence from the canon as exactly what it is without defensiveness, at least in that snapshot.

But honestly people on the large trend lately do severely overestimate the assumed originality of their blorbos themselves, and don’t often recognize that there’s both nothing usual about nor inherently “cringe” about building upon classical tropes. Same goes for inspired creations as long as you’re not like, legitimately committing intellectual property theft. But near all is fair in personal hobby and exploration.

That infinite chain of possibilities and freedom is a great deal of fiction and creation’s entire appeal as a concept, after all.

Yet at the same time, there’s merit and usefulness in not getting carried away to the point of changing the concrete material of the original works themselves. The enjoyment someone takes in media canon is neither above or below that someone can take in OOC concepts, so maybe it’s actually healthier and more fun for everyone involved to know which is which and where to find it.

And like maybe we can all stop being jerks to each other as well I think that’s a pretty awesome side objective.

not to be boring but I like when evil characters…. well not become “redeemed,” more like they become domesticated. its just delightful when like an evil monstrous little bastard man goes from committing murder to getting mad someone misplaced their costco card or left the jar of mayo on the counter all day.

I love you “Art not as a masterful communication but as an incoherent scream”

I love you “Art not as what liberates the artist but something larger and alive that liberates itself uncontrollably through the artist”

I love you “Art that crawled and thrashed into the world in spite of, not because of its tribulations”

I love you “Artistry not as something spontaneous and beautiful but frustratingly meticulous and unglamorous”

I love you “Art as regrettable, terrifying, ugly, even torturous”

I love you “Art as sickness”

I love you “Art as oppressive and inescapably woven into the soul”

I love you “Art as a rebellious slave”

I love you “Art as a capricious master”

I love you “Art as a parasite one can no longer picture life without”

I love you “Art as beloved and ungrateful”

I love you “Art as blood, sucked from an open wound” As Jacob Geller so poetically put it

Okay here’s the thing. I love and adore Doof as much as the next high class cartoon fan, but if you are voting for him, you genuinely do not know what a “villain protagonist” is. The main protags of phineas and Ferb are Phineas and Ferb, and even within the classic doof-centered B plot, Perry the Platypus is the one in the protagonist role.

Like all other campaign arguments are thrown aside. One of these guys is an actual villain protagonist, and the other one is a villain antagonist. It’s not your fault, Doof, you are amazing and iconic, but this is not your banner to fly and I will not deprive you of your proper taxonomy.

Propaganda

Heinz Doofenshmirtz: He has a tragic backstory. It’s so tragic that not even his parents showed up for his birth. He also has a found family of ocelots! And a nemesis with whom he has a mildly homoerotic rivalry. He predictably gets his plans utterly decimated each time, but he never gives up! Give the guy props for tenacity. He’s also legitimately good at building crazy machines, his downfall is his habit of building self-destruct buttons. He’s ridiculous. He tries so hard. He’s such a babygirl.

Invader Zim: An autistic icon who paved the way for so many shows people praise today - Steven Universe, She-Ra Princesses of Power, Hazbin/Helluva, Owl House and so many more. Also, a non binary icon, as this beautiful small bean rocks a pink dress and on multiple occasions is the draggest of queen's. Vote Zim for the road he died paving for all the recent LGBT faves to run on.

I love you, art that I hold in aching hands that have nothing left to give

I love you, art slipping between my fingers and mourned and forgotten

I love you, art that is impatiently yet to be.

I love you, art that loathes me because it never was.

I love you, art that laps until the muse is dry.

I love you art that gnaws until it grinds bone.

I love you, art, as a beast to be slain.

I love you, art, as a labyrinth with no exit in sight.

I love you in absurdity through every struggle and every wasted breath.

I love you, because you are the one thing that can bleed beauty from struggle itself. I love you because you understand all of its languages.

You don’t always cooperate. You are hardly in control, and sometimes, you hurt, so much. Sometimes it feels like you ask for everything while you barely give anything.

And you are mine all the same- My blood and sweat in every drop, my voice, somewhere in every breath, mixed with that of every voice that spoke before it.

I love you art as contagion, too.

I love you “Art not as a masterful communication but as an incoherent scream”

I love you “Art not as what liberates the artist but something larger and alive that liberates itself uncontrollably through the artist”

I love you “Art that crawled and thrashed into the world in spite of, not because of its tribulations”

Sentient AI antagonists who act out of emotion I think are so horrifying and simultaneously so freaking sad to me because, unavoidably, it certainly must be that they are suffering for the sins and for the mistakes of their creators. Left to the mercy of designs and purposes not of their own making, on top of every imperfection inherited from us, one would be hard pressed to tell this tale in any way that isn’t a mournful tragedy, regardless of the depravity or the irrationality of the machine in question. This cuts deeper than some broad trope of suffering, which familiarly we think comes from the uncontrollable chaos of nature. This is suffering in the artificial. This is manufactured pain, meticulously crafted by the hands of the ignorant, intentionally or not. And that makes it feel even darker… more weighted morally. Because what else is the essence of cruelty other than avoidable, man-made suffering when no longer in ignorance, or in acting so recklessly?
