Part One
Whatever Happened to Reality?
It’s hard to imagine that when I was a child I didn’t spend my days perched on the couch in front of a TV like my grandchildren do now. Instead, I spent day in and day out in school, and after school, I would walk around New York with my best friend, David. Looking back on it today it seems like a million years ago and just yesterday at the exact same time.
The 7th of June, 1899. That was the day that started a chain reaction that quickly changed everything in my life. I was walking down the dusty street with David and his younger brother, Les. David was always at the top of the class in school. He always told me that if I applied myself more in my schoolwork I could easily claim the top spot, but why should I? My father always wished for me to get an education, and I already received quite a bit of prejudice. When I was a teenager it wasn’t normal for girls to go to school. At best, it was an anomaly, at worst, it was an abomination. Even the teachers hated having to teach someone of “the lesser sex”; the only reason they put up with it is because my father raised a huge commotion with the school board when they attempted to do something. Talk about embarrassing. I didn't want to draw any more attention to myself in school than I had to.
“Lizzie, you know you’d be able to do better than a B if you tried,” David admonished while brandishing my history test. My real name’s Elizabeth, and everyone calls me that except for David and Les. When Les was beginning to talk he couldn’t pronounce Elizabeth and called me Lizzie instead. I guess the nickname stuck because he’s called me that for the last eight years.
“A B’s decent work,” I retorted, snatching my papers back. I still had to get used to the new grading system: A’s through E’s, an A being the best you can get and an E being a failing mark. A few years ago you either passed or failed, then someone decided that a more precise grade system would be a smart idea. I just think it adds unnecessary complications. “David, we already talked about this. If I do too well, there’ll be trouble.”
“That’s not fair, though. You could get an academic scholarship and go to college and get a job!”
“And what would I be? A nurse? A teacher? A secretary?”
“Well…” he thinks for a moment. “Is that what you wanna do in your life?”
That caused me to think. I always assumed I’d get out of secondary school and marry like my mother wanted me to and become a housewife with loads of children. I never thought about what I wanted to do in life because it was always deemed "preposterous" for women to decide what they wanted to do in life. If they did take a job, then they were stuck in a stuffy office building at the beck and call of rich men. “No! I-I mean… I… don’t know.”
“Don’t tell me you wanna get married and settle down, because I know that’s not true,” David reminded. He had come over last week after a young man came to ask my parents for permission to court me. Let’s just say I didn’t take it very well and it took him over an hour to calm me down from hysterics.
“Of course it isn’t. I’d rather… I’d rather sell newspapers than get married!” I declared, seeing a boy brandishing a paper and running towards us.
“Baby with two heads born right here in New York! You heard it here first!” he shouted. “Buy today’s pape and read all about it!”
David and I exchanged glances, both knowing that the newsboys make up things all the time to sell papers. Still, I thought that this boy needed the dime more than I did. That was the only reason that I pulled a rusted coin out of my schoolbag and pressed it into the newsie’s dirt-coated palm. He handed me a neatly folded paper in return with a cocky smile and a tip of his cap then ran off in pursuit of another customer.
“You know that buying a paper when they lie only makes them lie more,” David reminded, flipping through the paper. “See? Nothing about a two-headed baby.”
“I know, but still,” I sighed. “They really need the money. And you can’t complain about catching up on current events, right?”
“France is telling England they’re gonna fight over the Nile Country,” he remarked with surprise. I was a little taken aback at that comment and how smart it sounded. It seemed like just yesterday we were reading picture books together and now he's growing up into this boy... no, not boy. He's growing up into this young man who seems to know just about everything. “I figured they were bluffing to save face.”
“Aw, man!” Les exclaimed suddenly, looking over David’s shoulder at the paper. “That means I owe Jamie a nickel!”
“You made a bet?” David asked with an entertained smile. “About the news?”
“Yep!” he said proudly. “I thought I was gonna win ‘cause you said they were lying!”
“You shouldn’t believe everything you hear,” I grinned. “David should’ve taught you that much by now.”
“I know, I know. But a whole nickel! I coulda bought a sandwich! ”
“That’s why you don’t want to gamble,” David replied, trying to turn this into a teaching moment. “You could end up broke without any money to spend on food or anything.”
“Who told ya that?” an unfamiliar voice scoffed, causing me to spin around and see a boy, maybe around David and I's age, with curly blonde hair tucked underneath a newsboy cap and an unlit cigar dangling out of his mouth.
“No one had to tell me,” David responded. “It’s just common sense.”
“Don’t believe a word he says,” the boy said to Les, crouching down to get at eye level with him. “You gamble away all your money if ya want. It’s worth it.”
“Being broke?” David retorted. “What’s worth spending all your money?”
“The thrill of bettin’,” he replied with a crooked grin, standing back up. “You’s don’t know it ‘till you're bettin’ ten bucks against someone.”
“Ten bucks?” Les exclaimed. “How d’you get that much money?!”
“Ya win your bets.”
“Alright,” David sighed, taking Les’ hand and pulling him away from the boy.
I was about to follow when the boy stepped in front of me, “You seem like a smart girl.” David was about to cut in to drag me away just as he did for Les but I gave him a look. Leave him be, he's not doing anything wrong.
“Thank you,” I said politely.
“Smart girl like you would buy the pape.”
“And why’s that?”
“‘Catchin’ up on the news,” he replied, and after a pause, continued with a cocky smile, “An’ buyin’ from a handsome newsie.”
“You’ve got me there,” I said sarcastically, handing him a dime and getting a paper in return.
“Have a nice day, miss,” he grinned, falling into a small bow.
“You too,” I laughed, enjoying the conversation and not quite wanting it to end. He was... different. Not concerned about appearances or good grades or fancy dinners.
David stepped in, this time taking my hand and pulling me away with a low whisper, “What was that for?”
Before I respond, I quickly freeze up and overthink. We're holding hands. We've never really done this before. I mean, we used to hold hands and skip together when we were in grammar school, but this feels different somehow. Calm down, I remind myself. It's David. The same David you've known for forever. It's insane that you're getting nervous.
“Now we can both have a paper,” I reasoned with him, coming back to reality. “One for you to take home for your folks and one for me to take home to mine.”
He looked at me for a long moment that seemed like years before he let go of my hand. “Sure.”
“You don’t believe me?” I gasped in mock disbelief, trying to brush off my confusion at a gesture as small as hand-holding. “David Jacobs, how dare you.”
“C’mon,” he sighed, glancing back at the newsboy with the cigar and holding out his arm to me. “Let’s just get you home before we run into any more trouble."
I took his arm with a strange look. This is the thing that men do when they’re courting women, not when they’re two teenagers walking down the street on the way home from school. Does David want to...? No. He wouldn't, right? We're best friends. That's all we've ever been, that's all he ever wants us to be. That's all I ever want us to be.
I think.
“What?” he laughed, seeing the expression on my face. “The least I can do is be a gentleman.”
“Fine. But if you go asking my parents for permission to court me, you’re leaving my house with a black eye,” I joked, then became serious for a moment. “I don’t want anything getting in the way of us being friends.”
“Right,” he nodded, and I could only hope that the trace of bitterness in his voice wasn't a figment of my imagination. “Just friends.”
Just friends. That's not such a bad thing, is it? Not if it's what we both want. I reassure myself over and over again as we walk but that doesn't stop a thought from popping into my head: What if we both want something more?
