Chameleon Boy (Part 1)

Chameleon Boy (Part 1)

Pairing: Gryffindor!Jin x Ravenclaw!reader

Words: 6.3k

Genre: Hogwarts AU, also pretty sure I created the new genre of Idiots to Morons to Lovers...

Warnings/rating: SFW (but with a fun sprinkle of spice), cursing, reader is emotionally constipated, Jin is somewhat of a perfectionist, mild violence

Author's Note: This is part of the BTS Hogwarts collab hosted by @homeofbangtan! Loosely based on the concept of the song Chameleon Boy by Blue October. I enjoyed writing this fic SO MUCH, y'all. So much that it became a behemoth novel of a thing, totaling 24.3k in total (parts 2 and 3 forthcoming)! Special thanks to @ttaetae for the banner, @min-yoon-kween for being my official beta reader, @hyungieyoongi for being my unofficial beta reader and official hype woman, and @sunshinejunghoseokie and @mochi-molala for putting up with me sending you ideas and snippets of story for over a month straight!

“Kim Namjoon!”

You wince over your Full English sitting in front of you...it was entirely too early in the morning for anyone to be yelling that boisterously across the Great Hall. You look over your shoulder to see Kim Seokjin, Gryffindor’s Head Boy and Quidditch Captain, walking purposefully towards your best friend, Kim Namjoon, who’s sitting next to you.

“Kim Namjoon!” Seokjin repeats, clapping him on the shoulder and sliding onto the bench between the two of you. His broad shoulders push you down the table.

“...yeah? What do you need?” Your friend smiles up at him, dimples forming in his cheeks.

“I wanted to pick your brain about the essay we had for Herbology. I know the Venomous Tentacula is poisonous and turns you a color if you drink its juice, but for the life of me I can’t remember which one, and I couldn’t find it in the text...care to help a friend out?” Seokjin smiles at Namjoon pleadingly.

“What, had one too many bludgers to the head and can’t remember?” You scoff. Seokjin swiftly turns towards you, suddenly remembering you’re still there. His movement shoves you further down the bench, conveniently towards the edge, where you proceed to topple off completely and land on the cold stone floor of the Great Hall. You can hear sniggers from the Slytherin table as they watch the whole exchange.

“Are you okay?” Seokjin asks, eyebrows raised in concern. He leaps off the bench and offers you a hand to help you up.

“No thanks to you, Seokjin,” you huff, refusing his hand and standing up on your own. You dust yourself off and start to gather your books to leave.

“Call me Jin, everyone does,” he offers up, trying to get you to look at him so he can properly apologize for his carelessness.

You continue to scoop your books into your bag, and only turn to face the boys after you’ve slung the bag over your shoulder.

“Joon, I’ll see you later in the common room. Jin, was it?” You smile with sarcasm dripping from your voice. He hums in acknowledgement, too afraid to push his luck with an actual sentence.

“Venomous Tentacula juice turns the drinker purple. It’s on page 394 of Flesh-Eating Trees of the World.”

Jin stares helplessly after you as you stride away.

------------------------------

“Smooth, Kim.” Jin turns around, only to see Park Jimin, Slytherin’s Seeker, rolling his eyes at him from the next table over.

“Mind your business, Park.” Jin snaps, ears starting to turn red.

“You made it my business when you shoved that poor girl onto the floor in front of the whole school. I’m sure she loved that,” Jimin sneers.

“I said mind your business, Park. You forget I can dock Slytherin points for you talking back to the Head Boy.”

Jimin just glares in response. Jin turns back to Namjoon, gives a hurried goodbye, and heads back over to the Gryffindor table.

How in the world was he going to make up for embarrassing you in front of everyone at breakfast? He knew he had to figure something out, and fast.

------------------------------------------

Jin is still wracking his brain trying to come up with ways to apologize to you as he walks to Defense Against the Dark Arts. Maybe he could do some fancy charm-yes, that sounded good. But wait...what was he going to do, knit you a scarf? He rolled his eyes at that thought and went back to square one in his head as he opened the door and headed to his seat.

Maybe he could bake you something? He was good at kitchen charms, he had the evidence (or should he say lack of evidence) to prove it every time he made treacle tarts or pumpkin pasties for his team. Jungkook would never shut up, asking him continuously about the next time he was planning on making something. Little did JK know, he was planning on making something special for their first game against Slytherin the following week. He smiled to himself thinking about it as he pulled out his quill and paper, prepared for whatever the lesson of the day was. He had to make sure he was on top of his game if he wanted to be a Curse-Breaker after graduation.

A minute till class starts, the door to the classroom bursts open forcefully and you sprint through it breathless. You frown as you see that the only empty seat is next to...Jin. Of course it is. You sigh and take your seat before the professor shows up, quickly pulling out your supplies.

Jin leans in to whisper something to you, but before he can say a word, the classroom door bursts open again to a frazzled, gray haired witch who marches to the front of the room and immediately begins lecturing.

The two of you furiously scribble as she talks, looking over at each others’ notes occasionally if you aren’t able to catch something she said. Jin’s broad shoulders bump into yours several times throughout class, luckily not sending you to the floor this time.

Towards the end of class, the professor mentions that there will be a semester-long project over some form of advanced dark magic.

“Your table mates will be your project partners for the semester!” The professor chirps cheerily.

You smirk across the room at your other best friend, Sunny, who is sitting at the same table with none other than Park Jimin.

“Sunny and Jimin, your project will be over horcruxes,” your professor smiles at them before turning to you.

The smirk that had been on your face falls instantly as you realize who your project partner is.

“Seokjin and Y/N, your project will be over the Imperius Curse.”

Jin turns to you with a nervous smile. “Hey...partner.”

“...hey,” you return in a small voice.

“Do you want to maybe...work on our first essay at the library this weekend together? I’m sure you probably have a better handle on this than I do already, being a Ravenclaw and all.” Jin smiles at you more genuinely this time.

“And what exactly is that supposed to mean?” You question, eyebrow raised.

“Oh, um. Just that you’re smart and stuff. You knew about Venomous Tentacula poison without even double checking the textbook this morning. So I figured you’re probably really good at essays...I just have to work a little harder sometimes at school stuff, I promise I’m not dumb!” he rambles, pink dusting his cheeks. He’s cute when he’s flustered, you think.

“I know you’re not dumb, idiot,” you smirk up at him.

“...but you just called me an idiot?” he questions, eyebrows furrowed.

“I know you’re not dumb, Jin. You wouldn’t be able to be Head Boy if you were. Plus Joon doesn’t associate with idiots,” you smile warmly, a true grin gracing your face.

Jin chuckles in response, running his hand through his hair to push it out of his eyes. “So meet me in the library this weekend?”

“...I bet you say that to all the girls,” you reply, grabbing your things and walking out of the classroom laughing.

Jin is left dumbstruck staring after you for the second time that day. As he turns back to his notebook, he sees your handwriting in the top corner of his notes. When you had time to write that without him seeing, he has no idea.

Meet me in the restricted section at 4pm on Saturday.

Jin smiles to himself as he finishes packing up his things and heads out. This was going to be a fun project.

--------------------------------------

You busy yourself the rest of the week with your studies, hanging out with Joon, and making fun of Sunny, who is agonizing over being partners with Jimin-who you’re pretty sure she has a huge crush on.

Come Friday, you’re sitting in the Ravenclaw common room poring over your notes for Potions, when you hear a strange clicking sound. You look around the large armchair you’re in and don’t see anything. No one else is in the common room currently because it’s the middle of the afternoon-everyone else is either in the library or out enjoying the sunshine while it lasts. So where is the clicking noise coming from?

As you continue to look around, it becomes louder and more insistent. You can tell it’s coming from outside, so you look towards the window only to see a tiny pygmy owl frantically tapping its beak on the glass.

You immediately jump up from your chair and rush over to the window, opening it as quickly as you can. The little owl flutters in and lands on the arm of the chair you were in before, seeming to scowl at you indignantly for not letting it in sooner.

“I’m sorry, little one. I didn’t realize you were at the window, I thought someone had left Exploding Snap or something out, I would have let you in much sooner had I realized!” You reach forward to pet the owl’s head with your finger, it being much too small to touch with your entire hand. It trills softly at you as you pet it, and you think it may have forgiven you for leaving it outside so long.

“Who are you looking for, hmm? You’re incredibly adorable, you know?” The owl preens under your compliment and sticks out its leg to you, where you can see there is a small folded note with your name on it.

“For me?” You’re surprised-no one ever sends you things unless it’s for your birthday or a holiday. Christmas is more than a month away, and your birthday isn’t until spring term. You reach out and gently remove the note from the owl’s leg, and it promptly hops into your lap and bumps its head against your finger for more affection. You oblige as you unfold the paper, only to see two lines in a messy, loopy scrawl.

Chocolate or cinnamon?-KSJ

P.S. This is HooDini, he likes attention. Maybe too much, actually.

You can’t help the smile that tugs at the corners of your mouth as you look down at HooDini. He’s made himself at home in your lap, looking as if he’d like to fall asleep under your touch. You scoop him into your palms and place him back on the arm of the chair so you can pull out a quill to respond. He looks highly offended, and turns his head away.

“Sorry, HooDini, I didn’t want you to fall,” you laugh softly at the owl’s antics. He peeks his head back around at the mention of his name, settling for watching you write out an answer to Jin.

...cinnamon, for sure. Chocolate is overrated.

P.S. Your owl is cute and I think he might like attention as much as his owner does.

You aren’t sure why Jin is asking about chocolate or cinnamon, but you can’t be too mad. You needed a break from working on your Potions homework, and being able to pet an owl was the perfect remedy...plus, if Jin cared enough to write a whole note, you figured you would indulge him. You tie your response to HooDini’s leg and carry him over to the window.

“Don’t be a stranger, okay?” You give him one last pet, and he nips your finger affectionately before taking off. You head back over to your armchair and start flipping through your notes again.

------------------------------------------

A few minutes later, HooDini comes flapping through the Gryffindor boys’ dormitory window, crashing onto Jin’s four poster bed with his leg stuck up in the air.

“Hoo, you alright, mate? That was quick!” Jin scoops his owl up into his hands, bringing him to eye level to make sure he’s okay.

HooDini hoots softly, insistently shoving his leg towards Jin. He takes the note off the owl’s leg and places him on the blanket at the end of the bed. HooDini immediately makes a burrow for himself and stares at Jin while he reads your response to your question.

He was hoping you’d say cinnamon instead of chocolate...now he knows just what to make you for your study date. Or, not date. Whatever it is. He shakes the thought away. Just because you were cute, did not make this any kind of anything. You barely knew each other anyway. He rummages around in his trunk until he finds what he’s looking for-his mum’s Muggle cookbook he brought from home, as well as a magical cookbook he’d picked up from Flourish and Blotts at the start of the year. He rolls up his sleeves and starts to flip through the pages, making notes from each.

He’s determined-he’s going to make you the best bake of his life.

--------------------------------------

The next day, after lunch and working on Herbology homework out in the greenhouse with Joon, you head to the Ravenclaw common room to pack up for your trip to the library to meet up with Jin. You quickly shove as many books about dark magic as you can into your bag without splitting the seams, and sling it over your shoulder. As you do so, you notice dirt smudged on your sleeve. You attempt to rub it off, and it just smears more into the fabric. You shrug to yourself-you’ll use a spell to get it off later. Jin can deal with a little bit of dirt, it’s just a trip to the library. You head out of Ravenclaw Tower, hoping you won’t have to wait too long for Jin to arrive once you get to the library.

To your surprise, he’s already there once you make your way to the back of the library, and he’s set up a table for the two of you. From the looks of it, he’s been there a while...his hair is mussed from running his fingers through it and he lets out a deep sigh as you approach the table.

Hearing your footsteps, he glances up, startled.

“Oh...hey! Grab a seat,” he reaches to try and straighten up his belongings that are strewn about everywhere with one hand while simultaneously trying to pull out a chair for you with his other hand.

You grab the chair from him and slowly pull it out for yourself.

“I can do that myself, thanks…” You raise an eyebrow at him.

“Of course! I mean, I know that. Sorry,” his ears go slightly pink at your statement as he meekly pulls his hand away from the chair.

You sit down and pull out all your books one by one, his eyes going wide as the stack keeps growing.

“How many do you have in there?...it is one of those bottomless bags? How does it work?” His eyes alight with curiosity.

You stifle a laugh (you are in a library, after all), and shake your head.

“It’s not a bottomless bag, you doofus. I just know how to pack efficiently is all...and I think I have 7 in here? Just things I had that I thought could maybe be useful for our project.”

Jin smiles at you softly as you finish your explanation.

“What?” You look over at him, not understanding what’s amusing about you packing books to use for your project. Doesn’t he want a good grade as well?

“Nothing, you’re just a nerd.” His soft smile doesn’t leave his face as he answers you, but he’s not able to keep eye contact for long.

“Oh, I’m the nerd? Don’t think I didn’t see what you just put away as you were trying to clear the table...Advanced Arithmancy, I think it was?” You smirk, knowing you’re right as his eyes grow wide.

“Well, how else am I supposed to become a Curse-Breaker after graduation? I have to take that class...doesn’t mean it’s not kicking my arse in the process though. It’s why I look like I’ve been electrocuted, it’s stressing me out so much I’m pulling my hair out!” He exclaims, pointing to the mess of hair sitting on top of his head.

“You’re lucky I know what electricity is, otherwise I would think you’re crazy right about now.” You smile as you reach forward across the table, smoothing down an errant strand of Jin’s hair that’s managed to find itself standing straight up in the air. He freezes when your hand makes contact with his head, eyes going even wider than before.

As you pull away, a faint pink dusts your cheeks. Maybe you shouldn’t have gotten in his personal space, seeing as you don’t know each other that well. Before you can dwell on it too much, you notice Jin smiling at you again.

“I forget that not everyone knows what electricity is...goes to show what a Muggleborn I am. You too?” He inquires, genuinely curious to hear your answer.

“Pureblood actually.” You can see his face fall slightly at that, and you rush to clarify. “I absolutely do not buy into the pureblood shit that a lot of the Slytherins like to brag about. I’m not better than you, or anyone else, just because my parents happened to be a witch and a wizard. It’s just dumb luck, that’s all.”

“Wait..so how in the world do you know about electricity then?” Jin cocks an eyebrow at you in confusion.

“I’m in Advanced Muggle Studies, that’s how. I think Muggles are fascinating,” you shrug, the answer seeming simple to you.

You notice a smirk slowly making its way onto Jin’s face, though he is clearly trying to fight it.

“Oh, what now?” You roll your eyes as Jin gives in to the smirk, his eyes twinkling in mirth to match.

“...you really are a nerd, aren’t you?” He chuckles and ducks out of the way as you swat at him with one of your books.

“Shhh!!” The librarian shushes you both as she walks by your table. You’re honestly surprised that it hasn’t happened before now with how loud the two of you have been.

You both duck your heads down, burying your faces in your books while stifling laughter. Once the librarian is out of sight, you raise your head to look at Jin over the spine of Secrets of the Darkest Art.

“So, our project. The Imperius Curse?” You question.

The two of you get to work, poring over endless amounts of books for hours on end, scribbling notes down about anything even tangentially related to the Imperius Curse. Jin comes up with the idea for your first essay to be over the creation of the Unforgivable Curses, and historically how the Imperius Curse has been most frequently used. You’re pleasantly surprised to see he’s prepared an outline of his ideas before showing up to meet you.

Your stomach growling breaks up your study session hours later. Jin glances up at the sound, then looks over at the clock on the wall.

“It’s nine already! I’m so sorry I kept you here this late, you could have left me to go down to the Great Hall for dinner...they’ll have cleaned up already,” he exclaims worriedly looking back at you.

“It’s fine, I’m not that-” Your stomach interrupts you with an even louder sound. You can’t help but laugh at your stomach’s protest.

“Lucky for you, I’m here,” Jin bends down to rummage through his belongings. You peer over, curious.

He pulls out a covered tray of some sort, putting it down on the table. You raise an eyebrow in question. Jin whips off the lid with a flourish, looking extremely proud of himself.

The library is immediately filled with the scent of buttery cinnamon goodness. Your mouth drops open in surprise, and Jin’s eyes sparkle when he sees your reaction.

“Cinnamon chip scones...for you. An apology for embarrassing you at breakfast earlier this week, since I never properly apologized. Thanks for answering my note-I would have hated to have made chocolate chip scones instead. A travesty, really.”

“Jin, you really didn’t have to-” You try to protest, but as you move your hand in front of you to shoo the idea of him feeding you away, he’s placing a scone and napkin in your hand instead. The warmth seeps into your hand through the napkin, a welcome difference from the damp chill in the library.

“How is this still warm? You’ve had them in here for hours…” You’re confused, this isn’t how baked goods work.

“A semi-permanent warming charm, I can teach you sometime. I’m surprised I found something you don’t know about...nerd.” He smirks at you again, enjoying that he’s found something he knows about that you don’t.

Instead of giving him the satisfaction of an answer, you take a bite of the scone instead. It may have been a better bet to try and give a sarcastic comment back to Jin. As soon as the scone hits your tongue, it starts to melt and you let out an involuntary sigh of delight.

“...good?” Jin looks nervous, glancing at you, trying to gauge your reaction.

“...delicious. I think it might be the best scone I’ve ever had?” You admit, as much as you don’t want to.

Jin’s cheeks warm at your praise, a large grin breaking out across his face. He reaches across the table to you suddenly, and before you have the chance to react, he’s brushing his thumb over the corner of your mouth.

“You had a crumb,” he laughs, then furrows his brow and moves his thumb across your cheek. “And...dirt?” He asks, dumbfounded.

You pull away, embarrassed yet again in Jin’s presence.

“It’s from working in the greenhouses earlier today with Joon,” you murmur as you bury your face in your hands, frantically wiping at any other dirt that may still be on your face. Why did you care so much anyway?

Jin laughs goodnaturedly. “Don’t worry about it, I just figured I’d help you out while I was already at it with the crumb...but you’ve been working on homework all day? You need to get out more,” he states matter of factly.

You glare at him across the table in response.

“I’ve got it! You should come to the Gryffindor-Slytherin Quidditch game next week, it’s the first game of the season. Jeon and Park will be at each other's throats, so it should be entertaining for you at least.” Though he labels it as entertaining, his face scrunches in thought while he’s talking.

“And of course, you can come see yours truly, ‘Kill ‘Em Kim’, in action.” He winks at you. “I didn’t become Quidditch Captain for nothing, y’know.”

“I was considering saying yes, until you decided that winking and referring to yourself as ‘Kill ‘Em Kim’ was a good idea.” You roll your eyes as you gather up your belongings to head back to Ravenclaw Tower. Jin follows you as you exit the library.

“Don’t make me Imperio you to come to the game!” He calls down the hallway after you.

You turn on your heel to face him. “You couldn’t Imperio me if you tried, and even if you did, I’m strong enough to break it. Plus it’s an Unforgivable Curse, did you forget? You’d be arrested,” you huff as you turn away and march off to your common room.

“...nerd.” Jin chuckles under his breath as he turns to make his way to his own common room.

When you finally make it to your dormitory, you shrug your bag off your shoulder onto the bed and sink down beside it. You’re exhausted after working on schoolwork all day. You open the bag to unpack its contents-all seven of your textbooks, copious notes, and-what’s this? Even after taking out all your books, there’s still a weight to your bag. You reach inside and pull out Jin’s container of cinnamon chip scones. When had he managed to sneak this inside your things?

There’s also a note in his messy scrawl sitting on top.

One’s not enough if you didn’t eat dinner-consider it a midnight snack. Maybe I can show you that semi-permanent warming charm sometime, or even better, how to make cookies the Muggle way, since you’re so fascinated with us. ;) Hope to see you at the game (supporting Gryffindor, of course)! -Kill ‘Em Kim

You smile to yourself, before tucking the tin into your bedside table drawer...after all, you might want a midnight snack later.

---------------------------------------------

“Come on...please? Pretty please come to the game with me? Jin invited you anyway, you should come!” Sunny whines at you over breakfast the morning of the Gryffindor-Slytherin match. She’s made her way over from the Hufflepuff table just to plead with you with big doe eyes.

“Excuse me, you just want a reason to watch Jimin play since you’re not in either house. You’re using me as a cover because I was actually invited!” You accuse, pointing your fork at her across the table.

She laughs goodnaturedly. “Yeah, so what? I want to watch him play, but I also don’t want to go alone. Please-” Her pleas are cut off by a loud commotion across the room. You both look over to see Jin and Jeon Jungkook, Gryffindor’s Seeker, being clapped on the back by housemates as they laugh and head out of the Great Hall down to the Quidditch pitch to get changed for their game.

Sunny turns back towards you while you’re still staring after the two of them.

“Don’t think I don’t see you admiring his broad shoulders!” She accuses, making you tear your eyes away and look at her again.

“Huh?”

“My point exactly. You’re coming with me, and you’re gonna see Kill ‘Em Kim in action,” she demands.

“Fine,” you sigh as you get up from your table. “Why is his nickname Kill ‘Em Kim, anyway?” You roll your eyes as the name falls off your tongue.

“Have you never been to a game before when Gryffindor’s played?” You shake your head. “Oh, you’re in for a treat then.” Sunny smirks as the two of you walk out of the Great Hall.

-----------------------------------------------

A few hours later, you and Sunny are weaving and dodging your way through throngs of people on the Gryffindor side of the pitch, trying to find the third member of your trio. You had promised Joon you would meet him at the game. You eventually collapse onto a bench once you find him, already sweating. Before you can get too comfortable, a booming voice echoes through the pitch, and the crowd immediately erupts into cheers and collectively stands on their feet. The match must be starting, you suppose.

The announcer welcomes the Slytherin team to the pitch first, giving them all individual introductions. The crowd surrounding you boos lightly throughout each name, until Park Jimin steps on the field. As he hops on his broom and alights from the ground, the boos around you grow in volume. Sunny, seemingly oblivious, claps excitedly and draws stares from several students around you.

“Sunny, people are staring. You can’t cheer for Slytherin in the Gryffindor section,” you hiss under your breath.

“Oh yeah…” She lowers her hands, but can’t seem to wipe the grin off her face as she watches Jimin fly around the pitch.

“And now for our Gryffindor team!” The announcer bellows loudly.

The boos turn into cheers, screams, and stomping around you. It feels like the stands may collapse under you if it keeps up like this.

The announcer introduces the Keeper, three Chasers, and a redheaded girl who’s one of the team’s Beaters.

“Jin’s next!” Sunny squeals in excitement, elbowing you harder than necessary, you think.

Sure enough, the next words out of the announcer’s mouth are-

“Give it up for Gryffindor’s other Beater, and Team Captain, KILL ‘EM KIM SEOKJIN!!”

The cheers around you are deafening...it’s very clear that Jin must be one of the team favorites. However, you are caught completely off guard by what happens next.

As Jin kicks off from the ground and starts to soar at eye-level with the crowd, he pulls his hand up to his mouth and begins to...blow kisses.

You are utterly confused, but before you have time to think, shrieks from female fans drown out any thoughts you may have had. It’s completely overwhelming, but as you look around, you can see the girls around you practically melting into puddles. It’s not just Gryffindors...it’s literally girls from each and every house.

“Kill ‘em with kindness, get it?” Sunny laughs from beside you. You look at her bewildered. Why had you even agreed to come to this stupid game?

As you look back towards the pitch, you find Jin looking your way and you lock eyes. He stops blowing kisses, but has the widest grin on his face because he’s noticed you.

The redheaded Beater comes up behind him and taps him lightly on the head with her bat, and makes an impatient motion with her other hand, clearly trying to communicate that he needs to get his head in the game. He nods at her, and goes to get in position for the start of the game, but not before turning back to you and sending you your own personal kiss and a wink. Now you’re the one that would like to melt into a puddle, and from the looks of some of the girls around you, they’d also like you to melt into a puddle-albeit for a completely different reason.

Sunny shrieks beside you as she grabs your arm. “He blew you a kiss! Kim Seokjin just made eye contact with you and blew you a kiss!”

“I thought you were here for Jimin, yeah?” You look over at her, still a little dazed, but recovered enough to whip out your signature sarcasm.

Before she can answer you, the announcer starts speaking again.

“And finally, Gryffindor’s Seeker, JEON “GOLDEN BOY” JUNGKOOK!!”

The cheers seem loudest for Jungkook, but you’re too busy following Jin’s movements across the field to care much.

The game is intense-Gryffindor’s Chasers are top notch, scoring goal after goal, but Slytherin’s Beaters are fast and furious, frequently sending Bludgers not only towards the Chasers, but also towards Jin and his counterpart, trying to take them out of commission. There’s even a moment where Jin gets sideswiped by a Bludger in his non-dominant arm while having to duck out of the way of the other Slytherin Beater swinging their bat towards his face.

Meanwhile, Jimin and Jungkook are circling the match from above, searching for any glimpse of the Golden Snitch. The game goes on for quite a while, each side occasionally scoring, but it seems the Snitch is nowhere to be found.

Suddenly, both Seekers nosedive towards the ground-you know they must have seen the Snitch, but you can’t seem to find it.

“There, there!” Sunny screams, pointing to the ground near the Slytherin goalposts, where sure enough, you can see a glint of gold in the waning sunlight.

Both Jungkook and Jimin chase relentlessly after the elusive ball, reaching beyond their brooms as much as they can. You can see Jungkook adjusting his position where it almost looks like he’s trying to stand on his broom to get more leverage.

The two Seekers zoom past your area of the stands, following where the Snitch goes. As they pass, there’s a loud crack as Jin winds up and uses the momentum and power of his broad shoulders to blast a Bludger Jimin’s way. The Slytherin ducks out of the way while still reaching his hand out to attempt what seems impossible in the moment-but you see it as well as everyone else does. His hand closes around the Snitch at the last second.

There’s a collective groan throughout the Gryffindor crowd, but then a mumble of confusion.

“It seems we’ve got an interesting result on our hands, folks...Park Jimin catches the Snitch for Slytherin and ends the game, but Gryffindor wins the match!!” The announcer seems as stunned as everyone in the crowd.

The stands around you erupt with noise.

“We won! He won!” You scream in disbelief at Sunny, more excited than you ever thought you’d be about a sporting event.

“Yeah he did!” Sunny shares your enthusiasm. “Should we meet the boys outside the pitch? Congratulate Jin?” She wiggles her eyebrows at you.

“Sure,” you roll your eyes in response. “And you can console Jimin,” you add with a laugh.

By the time you’re able to make it through the stands and to the outskirts of the pitch, the sun has started to set and the crowds have mostly dispersed. The two of you hang around outside where you know the locker rooms are for a little while-just as you’re about to give up and walk back to the castle, players start to file out of the pitch.

Jimin is one of the first to come out, looking rather disgruntled. Sunny looks at you questioningly, wordlessly asking you if you are okay with her leaving to go talk to him. You smile and nod, and she breaks out into a grin as she skips toward him. Though he looks upset, you can tell his mood lifts a little as she makes her way over to him.

“What’re you grinning about?” A deep voice in your ear startles you and you turn to see Jin smiling at you.

“Young love, I think,” you reply, gently motioning towards your friend as she walks away.

“Park and Sunny? Cute, he needs someone to lighten him up a little.” Jin clearly must have just stepped out of the shower, because he keeps having to push wet hair out of his eyes and he’s in a casual tee and pants instead of his Quidditch robes. As he sweeps his hair off his forehead, you notice a blue and purple mark starting to bloom on the outside of his left bicep.

Without thinking, you grab his arm as he brings it down beside him to take a closer look. “Is this where that Bludger sideswiped you?” You ask softly, running your fingers gently over the mark.

“What? Oh...yeah, guess so.” He looks unbothered by the injury.

“Doesn’t it hurt?” You look up at him, and he is taken aback by the concern in your eyes.

“I mean...a little, but it’s not a big deal. A risk of the game, y’know?”

“Yes, but the Slytherins were playing way too rough!” you exclaim. “They sent a Bludger your way while the other one tried to take your head off-that’s against the rules!” You’re getting more riled up the more you think about it-who did Slytherin think they were exactly?

Jin chuckles in response. “The Slytherins always play dirty, and the refs don’t always catch it. I knew what to expect. It’s cute that you’re so fired up about it though.” His signature smirk made its way onto his face yet again.

You roll your eyes at him, but keep your hand on his arm. “Let me take a closer look at this, please,” you plead while looking at him. “At the very least, it’s good practice for me.”

“...practice?” He cocks his head to the side, somehow managing to look like a confused dog.

“I want to be a Healer when I graduate,” you state matter-of-factly. You take his arm and gingerly move it in your hands to take a look from multiple angles.

“It got you pretty good, Jin. I think it might be a bone bruise, it’s hard to tell though with all the pooled blood under the surface.” Your diagnosis is quick-you’re just glad he doesn’t have any broken bones, to be honest. You whip out your wand from your bag and point it at his arm.

“Episkey.”

The blue and purple marks on his arm slowly vanish, as if being siphoned away. As his arm returns to its normal color, he stretches it out experimentally.

“How does it feel?” You ask, wanting to both make sure that he’s okay, and that your spellwork was up to snuff.

“Good as new. Thanks, Nerd.” He smiles down at you, genuine in his gratitude despite the nickname.

“No problem,” you smile back.

The two of you begin to walk back to the castle, sunlight almost completely gone from the horizon. There’s silence, but it’s comfortable. As you walk through the main doors, Jin turns to you.

“So what did you think of the game, hmm?” He has a mischievous twinkle in his eyes as he asks the question.

“I thought it was fun, and I’m glad you guys won.”

“Now you know why they call me Kill ‘Em Kim,” he winks obnoxiously at you, and you roll your eyes.

“Yes, because apparently the entire female population of this school wants you to blow them a kiss. You’re in high demand.”

“And yet...you’re the one I blew a kiss to. You must feel special.” He raises an eyebrow at you, daring you to disagree.

“So special,” you laugh. He tries to keep a serious face, but ends up laughing as well.

You both reach a landing in the Grand Staircase where you need to separate to head to your common rooms.

“Well, this is me,” you gesture upwards at the many stairs you still need to climb.

“Yeah…” Jin rubs the back of his neck, looking like he doesn’t want to leave just yet. “Thanks for coming to the game, and thanks for healing my arm for me...you didn’t have to do that.”

“Of course I did! You were hurt, and like I said, practice for me,” you grin up at him.

Jin leans in to hug you goodbye, which is a welcome surprise. You find that he feels warm and comforting, and smells a little like cinnamon-even though he’s just showered. He leans down mid-hug and murmurs in your ear.

“I blew you a kiss because you are special, whether you feel like it or not.” As he pulls away from the hug, he lands a quick but chaste kiss to your cheek.

Before you can say a word, he’s disappeared around the corner with a small wave in your direction. This was not how you thought today would go.

Kill ‘Em Kim, indeed.

----------------------------------------------

Days after the match, you still feel the phantom of Jin’s kiss on your cheek. He made you feel...safe. Like you could be yourself around him. Not that you couldn’t do that around your other friends, but Jin was just so much more than you expected. Funny. Smart. A good person. You weren’t quite sure what was happening between the two of you, but you were curious to find out. If you were being completely honest, you were excited to see him again-you just didn’t know when that would be.

“Hello in there? Hello?” You’re snapped out of your thoughts by Namjoon gently tapping on the side of your temple.

“Huh?”

“Don’t worry about it, your brain clearly isn’t in this room, and you’re thinking about something. Or should I say someone.” He chuckles as he smirks at you, but there’s kindness in his eyes.

You toss the pillow on your armchair across the room, and Namjoon bats it away to the floor and raises his hands in surrender.

“I’m just saying, you seem really lost in thought these days. Care to elaborate? I can maybe give you the male perspective…?” Joon offers.

You consider your options. You could keep things to yourself and possibly implode while trying to figure out what was going on. Or you could tell Namjoon, and maybe ask him some questions, get some insight. He might make fun of you, but that was a risk you were willing to take.

“Okay, fine, I’ll tell you,” you sigh and roll your eyes, even as you grin at your best friend. “I can’t figure Jin out. He’s partners with me for this DADA project, but he brought me scones? And then invited me to his Quidditch game, blew me a kiss, and then kissed me on the cheek when we said goodbye after the game?” You’re not sure why each statement is coming out as a question, but they’re hanging in the air nevertheless as you finish talking.

Joon lets out a laugh. “Okay, so what are you confused about?”

“What does all that mean? I mean, half the school is in love with him or something, and he’s kind of flirty in general. I can’t tell what his angle is,” you motion with your hands exasperatedly as you further explain yourself.

“His angle? His angle is, he likes you.” Namjoon looks very self-satisfied as he leans back in his chair, arms folded over his chest.

“Okay, but you don’t know that, he didn’t tell you that…” you start, “-or did he? Wait-has he talked about me? To you?!” you screech.

“Calm down...no, he hasn’t. At least not yet. But I’ve seen the way he looks at you in class. And when you’re not looking over breakfast in the Great Hall. Whoops, he probably doesn’t want you to know that,” Namjoon looks slightly abashed as he sinks deeper into his chair.

Your eyes widen at this new information you’ve gathered from your friend. Before you can process it into a reply, there is a small tapping noise from the window. You both look over to see HooDini rapping his beak against the glass.

“Speak of the devil, and he shall appear. Or, I guess his owl will.” Joon laughs as you glare at him. You choose to ignore his statement and go open the window to let the owl in. HooDini swoops joyfully across the common room before landing on your armchair, leg stuck out self-importantly with a note attached.

You’re quick to unfurl it, sinking back down in your seat as you absentmindedly pet the owl, your eyes roaming over the now-familiar script.

Hey Nerd-meet me outside the kitchens tonight at 10pm. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, I’m going to teach you how to make cookies the Muggle way. I couldn’t wait until class to see you again, so I figured why not be spontaneous? Don’t get caught sneaking out-I’d hate for you to lose house points...you study too hard and too much for that. :) -Jin

You smile to yourself as HooDini preens under your attention...at least you didn’t have to worry about when you were going to see Jin anymore.

“What’re you smiling about?” Namjoon grins over at you knowingly from his own armchair.

“Oh, nothing.” You tuck the note into your pocket and quickly scribble out a reply before sending HooDini back out the window to his owner.

“I have a feeling ‘nothing’ might also have a lot in common with a certain Gryffindor Quidditch captain,” Joon raises his eyebrow at you, daring you to disagree.

You just smile and shrug, and head up to your dormitory, leaving Namjoon with more questions than answers.

----------------------------------------------

Later that night, you made sure to leave your dormitory while the other girls in your year were out and about. Just as you go to leave the common room, you hear someone clear their throat. You freeze in place and slowly turn around to see who exactly has caught you the one time you’ve decided to break the rules.

“Going somewhere after hours, are we?” You meet the eyes of your best friend for the second time that day.

You breathe a small sigh of relief. “Joon, don’t scare me like that!” you whisper yell. “And yes...I am. Please don’t tell anyone?” You look at him with what you hope are convincing puppy dog eyes.

“Tell me where you’re going, and I’ll consider it.” You can see the corners of his mouth threatening to turn up at any moment, so you decide to just come clean.

“I’m going to meet up with Seokjin, okay?” you hiss as quietly as you can.

“Going to have a quick snog in the Room of Requirement, then? I thought you were confused about how he felt? Or how you felt?” Joon laughs goodnaturedly as you turn beet red.

“No, I am going to the kitchens and we are making cookies,” you state, willing your face to turn back to its normal color.

“Go, have fun. I won’t tell anyone...just tell Jin I said hi please, I haven’t hung out with him in a while. You seem to be taking up all his free time these days,” your friend winks at you and shoos you towards the door.

----------------------------------------

You are out of breath when you arrive outside the kitchens, a mixture of nerves and having to sprint down the staircase to avoid getting caught out after hours. As you look down the basement corridor, there is only the flicker of torchlight. Were you here at the right time? Did Jin stand you up?

Just as you start to panic, a long shadow turns the corner and makes its way toward you. If it isn’t Jin, you are screwed. There’s no way to explain why a Ravenclaw was down in the basement, near the kitchens. Maybe you could say you were visiting Sunny and lost track of time?

“Hey!” The shadow calls out down the hallway in a familiar deep voice. You squint down the hall, and the shadow comes into view as Jin walks in front of one of the torches casting light off the stone walls.

“Hey,” you breathe a sigh of relief as he draws closer to you.

“Ready to make cookies?” He grins widely at you, and you nod. Satisfied, he turns and tickles the pear in a still life painting that sits in front of you. The pear giggles and the painting opens towards the two of you. Your eyes go wide in wonder as you both walk through the entrance to the most cavernous kitchen you’ve ever seen.

“How did you know how to get in here?” you breathe out softly, too afraid to talk any louder for fear of your voice echoing off the walls.

“I know a Hufflepuff or two, don’t worry about it. They owed me a favor.” Jin winks at you and grabs your wrist, pulling you over to the side with a large oven and plenty of counter space to work on.

“Here-”, he gestures grandly at the counter, “-is where the magic happens.”

You immediately go to pull your wand out of your back pocket, and he laughs.

“No, no, no...put that away, I told you we’re doing this the Muggle way. No wands. I get to teach you something for a change.” Jin nods approvingly as you move your wand back to your pocket.

He motions for you to put your hands out towards him, and as you do, he begins to gently roll up your sleeves for you. Every time his hands brush your arm, it makes your stomach feel funny. When he’s done, he holds out his own arms expectantly.

As you carefully roll back the sleeves of his maroon sweatshirt, you look up at him and smile. “If you’re teaching me something, doesn’t that make you...a nerd?”

Jin pretends to consider your question thoughtfully. “I suppose it does...I guess we’re just a couple of nerds then, aren’t we?” His eyes glitter with laughter as you smile up at him.

It’s then that you notice he’s got a backwards ballcap on his head.

“What’s with the hat? You know we’re inside, right?” You whisper conspiratorially to him.

His eyes go wide in shock. “Oh no, I didn’t realize! Call the fashion police, I deserve it.” He rolls his eyes at you as you laugh. “I’m wearing this to keep my hair out of my eyes. Plus my hair looks like a Hippogriff’s nest right now, it’s awful...and my Muggle habits die hard, I used to wear hats like this all the time.”

“Ooo, we’ve got a cool guy on our hands, watch out,” you tease as you finish rolling up his sleeves. “Speaking of watch, what’s this?” You point at a vintage style watch adorning his wrist that you’ve never seen him wear before.

Jin is practically glowing as he answers you. “My mum and dad sent it to me as a present, I got it in the post today. Just a ‘we’re proud of you’ gift. I swear, they’re entirely too nice sometimes.” He tries to play down the significance of the gift, but you can tell that he loves it.

“Well, that must be where you get your kindness from.” You look at him with pure sincerity in your eyes, and he can feel his heart somersault in his chest. He needs to change the subject, and quickly.

“So, cookies,” he clears his throat. “I’ve got my mum’s cookbook to go off of, and all the ingredients should already be here.”

The two of you set to work, gathering all the ingredients from the numerous kitchen shelves that surround you, as well as the refrigerator. Jin shows you how to crack an egg properly, and puts you in charge of mixing all the dry ingredients while he claims the wet ingredients (you could say that eggs were not your friends, even after Jin showed you how to work with them).

The two of you combine the two sets of ingredients, and he mixes them to the right consistency. You’re in charge of scooping the batter onto baking sheets, and then you place them into the oven.

“And now...we wait.” Jin stretches his arms above his head, his stomach peeking out from under his sweatshirt. Your eyes travel down to the exposed skin, noticing the outline of his abs. Must be from all that Quidditch, you think as your eyes go wide.

“...like what you see?” Jin smirks at you, having noticed your line of sight. Your face burns with embarrassment, you open your mouth to retort but can’t think of anything to say. Your eyes glance around the room, and land on the bowl you had been using to mix the dry ingredients. Before you can think too hard about it, you’ve reached in and scooped the leftovers into your hand and are tossing them towards Jin.

His mouth drops open into a position similar to yours. “Oh, no you don’t! C’mere!” Jin darts towards you, but you’re too quick for him. You run around the counter to the other side, sticking your tongue out.

“So that’s how it’s gonna be? You want to play dirty?” He grabs an egg off the counter and starts tossing it from left to right.

You weren’t prepared for retaliation, you weren’t even planning on throwing anything in the first place-but he just had to show his stupid abs off…

You fake right and dodge left around the counter, but Jin is too quick for you. He follows you as you dart across the kitchen, his long legs making it seem effortless. You turn to run around a set of cabinets when you suddenly feel something wet dripping down your back. You whip around to see Jin mere steps from you. He reaches out, grabs you by the waist, and pulls you toward him. The momentum of his speed moves you quicker than either of you realize, and you crash into his chest, breathing heavily from chasing each other around the kitchen.

You look up and find Jin already looking down at you, his gaze much more intense than you were prepared for.

“Gotcha,” he whispers, his eyes slowly traveling down your face from your eyes to your mouth.

What little breath you had left is quickly gone because of how Jin is looking at you. He slowly leans down towards you, wetting his lips in the process. You find yourself reciprocating, almost without thinking. Leaning towards him, eyes fluttering closed. You feel his hand move from your waist to your jaw, angling you towards him, bringing you even closer. Just when you feel that you can’t wait any longer and are about to take matters into your own hands-

BEEP-BEEP-BEEP

Your eyes shoot open and you immediately back out of Jin’s arms. What were you even doing? You’re making cookies, not...whatever was just about to happen between the two of you.

You look at Jin and see what you think is hurt flash across his countenance, but it’s rapidly replaced by his signature smile.

“That’ll be the cookies, then.” He slides an oven mitt on and opens the oven, retrieving the cookies and placing them on the counter. He starts to pout as he looks towards them.

“What’s wrong?” you ask. The cookies look perfect to you, you’re not sure what he’s upset about.

“Now we have to wait for them to cool before we can eat them.”

You can’t help but laugh as you pull out your wand and use a mild cooling charm to remedy his problem.

You pick up a cookie and hold it up to his mouth. He obliges easily, taking a large bite. His face collapses into bliss.

“Mmm...so good. You’ve got to try it.” He takes the cookie from your hand and holds it up to your mouth. Normally, you would take the cookie for yourself, but he’s so excited, you let him feed you a bite. “Good, right?” Your only answer is groans of delight.

The two of you polish off a few more cookies apiece, splitting the remainder between the two of you to take back with you. You each pull out your wands to speed up the cleaning process, since you had made a right mess of things. Finally, you both walk back out of the painting and into the basement corridor.

“Thanks for inviting me out tonight...I’ve never snuck out after hours before,” you state bashfully, looking at your feet.

“Glad I could be your first,” Jin wiggles his eyebrows at you and laughs, while your face whips up, appalled.

“You’re insufferable!” You whisper at him as harshly as you can manage.

His response is to take the pad of his thumb and gently wipe at the corner of your mouth. “You had a bit of chocolate...just there.”

His hand remains cupping your jaw, a warm smile gracing his face. “I’m so glad you agreed to do this and that I could see you again before class. And I got to witness your first batch of homemade cookies from scratch? That’s ten points to Ravenclaw, I’d say.”

“Jin, you can’t just say things like that! You’re a Head Boy, you can actually give out points!” You fret worriedly as his hand drops toward his side.

“Oh, I know,” is all he says with a smirk, as he slowly starts to walk away from you. “I know.”

---------------------------------------

The next time you see Jin is in Defense Against the Dark Arts a few days later. He rushes in right before class starts, and slumps into his chair as his bag clatters loudly to the floor. You make eye contact and he gives you a small strained smile. You lean over to ask if everything is okay, but as you open your mouth, the professor strides in and starts class.

The lecture is nothing to write home about, just going over review material from last year, making sure everyone is on the same page before starting the material that will be on your N.E.W.T.s. The professor gives you a few minutes to connect with your tablemates at the end of class, and you turn expectantly to Jin, who gives you the same strained smile as before.

“Are you okay?” You ask tentatively.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Here, you can read over my sections I’ve been working on for our project, and I’ll take a look at yours.” Jin’s smile doesn’t reach his eyes, and you choose not to push him on the subject. Instead, you take the papers he hands to you and give him yours in exchange.

Your eyes scan over his work, and you’re impressed. He’s clearly put a lot of effort into what he’s put together, sentences scribbled through, rewritten, and notes added on the sides. You weren’t sure what to expect from a popular Quidditch captain when you were first paired up, but you have been pleasantly surprised by his smarts, not to mention his kindness...and you weren’t complaining about him being easy on the eyes either.

You turn to each other at the same time, and he motions for you to go first.

“Jin, this is good! You’ve got a comprehensive history of where the Imperius Curse came from, and how it spread in usage. The only thing is you’ve got this date wrong, the Great Wizarding War started in 1476, not 1434. But other than that, I’m impressed.” You smile warmly at him, hoping your praise will help him feel a little better. Instead you see his eyes narrow and the tight smile he had completely fall from his face. Your face falls in response.

“The only thing? Where the fuck do you get off telling me that ‘oh, everything’s all great, except for this major date is wrong’?” Jin scoffs derisively at you while rolling his eyes. “I’m sorry Ms. Perfect, I spent two days working on this with barely any sleep, but I guess I should’ve known it-sorry, I, wouldn't be enough for you, right?”

You pale at his accusation, and scramble to right what seems to be a massive wrong you’ve committed.

“Jin, I-is this about the other night? I don’t...your paper is fine, really. You asked me to go over it for you, so I just…” You stumble over your words, trying to figure out what this is all really about.

“You know, here’s your work back...should be no surprise that it’s perfect, right? Guess you really are a nerd.” You gasp hearing him use his usually affectionate name for you turned into a slur. You suddenly feel tears pricking at the corners of your eyes, which you try to quickly blink away.

“If you think crying’s going to get me to feel sorry for you, you thought wrong,” Jin hurls aggressively at you, causing some of the tears you’d been fighting to fall over your waterline.

Your argument has gotten progressively louder as it’s gone on, drawing curious stares from classmates. You see Jimin lean over towards Jin.

“Trouble in paradise?” The blond is smug, sarcasm dripping from every word. Jin’s eyes flash dangerously as he turns to face him.

“No, Jimin...didn’t you hear? I’m not good enough for her,” he turns back to you at this statement, his eyes now a mixture of anger and the hurt you saw the other night in the kitchens. “I’m done here, if no one has any more questions?” Jin looks around at everyone else, their eyes on the trainwreck happening in front of their eyes, no one daring to speak. He shoves his belongings in his bag and storms out of the classroom.

“...class dismissed?” Your professor looks just as bewildered by what happened as you feel.

As you gather your things, you see a Slytherin with pitch black hair rush out after Jin, looking highly perturbed by what just happened...Yoongi, you think his name is. What would he be so concerned about?

You abandon that train of thought to question whether you should try to talk to Jin after what happened. He seemed so angry...but why? Did he think you rejected him when the timer interrupted the two of you? You thought that your friendship was moving into uncharted territory, but after the exchange that just happened, maybe not. If he was going to be this emotionally volatile, you wanted no part of any kind of relationship with him.

You decide that you’ll leave him to sort out his feelings himself. From now on, he’s your project partner...and that’s it.

--------------------------------------------

Jin storms down the empty corridor, fuming. Who did she think she was, correcting his work loud enough for everyone to hear? And Park Jimin can keep his stupid mouth shut and his nose out of other people’s business. He just needed to go...somewhere. Be by himself. Clear his head. Lately, his brain had felt foggy and his emotions a little all over the place. He had a lot on his plate-Head Boy, Quidditch captain, classes, preparing for N.E.W.T.s, keeping Jeon in check, friends, family...it was getting to be a bit much, that was all.

His thoughts are interrupted by the sound of footsteps rapidly approaching from behind him. He turns to tell whoever it is to piss off, but before he can say a single word, Min Yoongi is pulling him into an empty classroom and closing the door behind them.

“You’re acting like a right git, you know that?” Yoongi crosses his arms over his chest, looking highly unimpressed.

Jin’s eyes go wide in surprise.

“Don’t look at me like that, you just yelled at that poor girl for what seems to me to be no reason in front of the whole class. And if my hunch is right, which I’m sure it is, almost took Jimin’s head off. What’s your problem?” He raises an eyebrow at Jin.

“What’s my problem? What’s your problem? You’re the one who’s hiding your blood status from everyone you know, afraid that Slytherin house will throw you out or something if they find out you’re not a pureblood. No one knows who you really even are. For God’s sake, every time we hang out, we’re skulking about after hours because you’re embarrassed to be seen with me,” Jin seethes.

Yoongi’s other eyebrow raises to meet the first.

“You know, I was going to try to talk some sense into you, but I see you might be a lost cause at the moment...so I’ll just say this. She deserves better than this. I deserve better than this. And honestly, Jin-you deserve to treat yourself better than this too.” Yoongi shakes his head softly at the man across the room from him, and heads towards the door.

Before he leaves, he turns back, eyes filled with disappointment and hurt. “And just so you know...I’d never be embarrassed to be seen with my best friend.”

He gently closes the door behind him, leaving Jin staring in his wake, head pounding, guilt slowly filling his insides. One question keeps making itself known, even through the fog filling his brain.

Was he actually the problem?

------------------------------------------------------------

The week seems to drag on more than usual with the absence of Jin occupying your free time. Luckily, you don’t have any other classes with him, and since you don’t share the same house, you’re able to avoid social interactions. You try to hide how off you feel (with some success), but it’s no match for Namjoon or Sunny who you’ve been best friends with for six years now. They each have their own ways of trying to distract you from you overthinking every interaction you’ve had with Jin - which is how you find yourself sitting in the Hufflepuff side of the stands during their Quidditch match with Gryffindor, though you’re not particularly pleased about it.

“Why am I here again? Jin is playing, I don’t need to be here. I don’t want to be here,” you pout looking over at Sunny.

“You’re fine! You’re in the Hufflepuff section, he has no reason to look for you here. Plus you’re being a good friend because I wanted to come,” she reassures you gently. You sigh in response, settling in for the game.

Sunny turns out to be right. Either Jin doesn’t see you, or if he does, he chooses to ignore you...you’re not sure which you’d prefer. Even though you haven’t talked to him in almost a week, you can’t stop yourself from watching his every move. He’s playing much more aggressively than he did last game, his bat sending Bludgers careening towards every Hufflepuff player he can manage. As the game goes on (much longer than the Slytherin match), Jin starts playing dirty when the ref isn’t looking-Bludgers flying towards players that don’t have the Quaffle, the crack of his bat even sending a hit towards Hufflepuff’s Seeker, narrowly missing Jungkook in the process.

You see his redhead counterpart sidle up next to him, clearly yelling in frustration at the way he’s choosing to play, and he simply yells back in return. You don’t know what’s being said, but she eventually retreats back to her position. Whatever she attempted to get across clearly isn’t working, because from that point on, Jin is covering both of their positions, still playing dirty when he can get away with it. It makes your stomach turn seeing him behave this way...you thought that your almost kiss was the reason he had been upset in class, but it seems like his behavior is just getting more erratic.

Sunny suddenly tugs on your arm and directs your attention across the pitch, just in time to see Hufflepuff’s Seeker grab the Snitch from right in front of Jungkook’s face. There’s a giant ‘ooooo’ through the crowd at the unexpected action, and the Hufflepuffs explode into cheering. Gryffindor was the favorite going into the match, and the underdog had managed to upend everyone’s expectations.

The two of you exit the stands, the buoyant atmosphere of the Hufflepuff win finally lifting your spirits a little. As you turn to head back to the castle, you notice a small crowd gathering around a couple of Gryffindors, one with their voice loud enough not that you could hear the words spoken, but you definitely recognize the timbre.

Jin.

You urgently pull on Sunny’s arm, dragging her over to the crowd. As you shove your way through what seems to be a gaggle of first years to the front of the group, you hear Jin absolutely tearing into Jungkook.

“I created a foolproof plan for this game...simple instructions, simple execution. This was supposed to be our easiest game of the season, yet somehow, Hufflepuff won. The Snitch was sitting right in front of your face-” Jin looks up, barely registering the massive group that now surrounds him and his team’s Seeker. He fleetingly makes eye contact with you as he scans over the front of the crowd, and immediately turns back to Jungkook.

“The Snitch was sitting right in front of your face, and you were too busy making goo-goo eyes at some girl to see it, and Hufflepuff literally grabbed it out from under your nose.” You can hear the venom dripping from his voice, and you can tell he isn’t just mad about some random girl Jungkook is interested in. When he emphasizes the word girl, you can feel an icy chill run through your veins-he’s still mad at you.

Jungkook opens his mouth to respond, but Jin cuts him off. “Tell me, Jeon, how does it feel to be the weakest link on the entire Gryffindor team?” The Seeker’s usual bravado seems to fall away as he shrinks under the uncharacteristically harsh gaze of his captain.

Just then, Park Jimin steps out of the crowd with a sneer on his face, eyes trained on Jungkook.

“Yes, Jeon, please enlighten us. You haven’t been able to catch the Snitch one single time this season, have you? Lost your touch, hmm?” Jimin strides closer to the two of them. “Or maybe...your captain just doesn’t know how to get you to perform.”

Jin’s brain is so fuzzy he can’t think straight. Jeon’s underperforming, his foolproof gameplan has proved otherwise, and everyone is a spectator as his emotions go haywire, flying out of control.

Jimin steps even closer. “I should have put 10 galleons on Hufflepuff today, honestly. So much for Golden Boy Jeon and Kill ‘Em Kim, eh?” Jimin asks, clapping Jungkook on the shoulder.

There is a sudden flurry of motion in the middle of the crowd. Jin closes the distance between himself and Jimin, a loud crack sounding as his fist collides with the blond male’s face. Jimin is lying in the dirt, Jin kneeling down to grab him by the collar of his shirt.

“You’re lucky I don’t have my bat on me, otherwise your face would look much worse,” he spits, pulling Jimin back up to his feet to do who knows what else to him. Just as Jimin regains a wobbly sense of balance, the black haired Slytherin boy from Defense Against the Dark Arts class rushes forward.

“Jin, stop!” The blood rushing in Jin’s ears prevents him from hearing anything. Instead, he brings his fist back, prepared to connect with Jimin’s face again.

“SEOKJIN, STOP!” Yoongi bellows, grabbing Jin’s wrist as he tries to move it forward. There are murmurs around the crowd, whispers wondering why this Slytherin boy seems to know Gryffindor’s Quidditch captain so well. Jin harshly yanks his arm out of Yoongi’s grasp, and the motion sends his wristwatch flying into the ground, shattering the clock face.

“I’ve known you since we were 6...you’re better than this. What’s going on?” Yoongi demands concern lining his face. There’s a collective gasp through the crowd at this revelation.

The fog slowly lifts from Jin’s brain, leaving a heavy pounding in his head. There’s a shooting pain coming from his clenched fist, and when he looks down, he sees blood covering his knuckles. But he’s not bleeding, so...his gaze travels up to where he sees Jimin, clutching his own hand to his face, blood pouring from his nose. What has he done?

Yoongi is still staring at him, and the crowd is murmuring to themselves. They know. They know he and Yoongi are best friends. He sees you, and you look so incredibly disappointed. Disappointed in him. He’s disappointed in himself.

Jin is overwhelmed, and quickly pushes his way through the crowd, setting off in a sprint towards the castle once he’s cleared through the throngs of people.

In the meantime, you push your way through to Jimin, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder. He flinches when he realizes who you are.

“Here to finish your boyfriend’s dirty work?” he asks thickly, trying to stop the horrendous nosebleed he has, coming from what you suspect is a broken nose. He can’t hide the fear in his eyes as he tries to glare at you.

“I’m here to help, I’m studying to be a Healer-,” you pull out your wand from your robes, “-and he’s not my boyfriend,” you add quickly.

Jimin looks at you, disbelief etched all over his face. “She can help, it’s okay.” Sunny has appeared beside the two of you, and is pleading with Jimin to let you help him. He looks at you again, giving a brief nod.

“Brackium Emendo,” you breathe out quietly, pointing your wand at Jimin’s face. There’s a loud crack as his nose goes back into place, but you can immediately see the bleeding lessen.

“...thank you,” he murmurs under his breath as he dusts himself off. He then turns and marches off towards the castle, Sunny trailing in his wake, no doubt going to see if he’s really okay.

As Jimin leaves, the crowd starts to disperse as well, seemingly sad to see the dramatic incident end. You see Yoongi lingering behind, not sure what to do with himself.

“Hey,” you grab his attention from watching other students leave. “Thanks for stopping him...that could have been a lot worse than it was,” you sigh, not wanting to think about the further damage that could have been done.

Yoongi looks at you curiously. “He’s my best friend...I had to stop him.” He shrugs as if this was the most obvious thing in the world. There’s a beat of silence before he continues. “Just so you know, he’s not ever like this. I don’t know what’s gotten into him, but it must be really bad. I overheard what he said to you last class, and you didn’t deserve that.” He picks at his robes, avoiding eye contact with you.

“Thanks,” you smile softly. “It’s Yoongi, right?” He looks up at you, surprised you know his name, and nods.

“He likes you a lot, you know. I can maybe see why if you’re kind enough to heal a Slytherin that he punched in the face.” Yoongi laughs a little as he says this.

“Do you...know where he went? I think he and I need to talk,” you state matter-of-factly.

Yoongi considers you for a moment before he decides to trust you with the answer. “He’s one of two places...either the Owlery, or the Astronomy Tower.”

You nod in thanks, giving Yoongi a small wave as you depart toward the castle. You notice the broken wristwatch on the ground, gathering it up as you leave to give it back to Jin…it was time to get to the bottom of things.

-------------------------------------

After an unsuccessful trip up to the Astronomy Tower, you find yourself cautiously peering around the corner of the entrance to the Owlery. What you find makes your heart sink through your stomach and land at your feet. Jin is sitting in an alcove, head in his hands. HooDini is settled into the crook of his neck, rubbing his head against Jin’s face in an attempt to comfort him. It would almost make you smile, if it wasn’t for the events you knew had led the boy in front of you to hide away from the rest of the world. You tentatively step forward, and HooDini swivels his head towards you, letting out a soft “Hoo”.

Jin slowly lifts his head out of his hands to see what has caught his owl’s attention. As he sees you, his body seems to crumble in on itself...broad shoulders bending inward, pulling his knees up into the alcove and hugging them to himself. As you draw nearer, you motion to the empty spot in the alcove beside him. He nods meekly, telling you to sit. No one says anything for a while, awkward silence hanging in the air between the two of you.

“...hey,” he eventually croaks out, voice wobbly with emotion.

“Hey,” you respond, unsure how to broach the subject of his recent behavior. Instead, you draw his broken wristwatch out of your pocket and try to hand it over to Jin. He instantly recoils from your hand, face going pale.

“G-get that away from me!” he exclaims loudly. “Please,” he adds in a more controlled tone, taking shaky breaths to calm himself.

“What’s wrong?” You are extremely confused-he loved this gift from his parents, and you figured he would want it back, strange behavior or not.

“It’s...cursed,” he breathes out.

“What?”

“The watch, it’s cursed.” Jin looks at you, pleading with you to understand.

“Wait, how do you know it’s cursed? I thought your parents gave it to you?” You’re still confused, none of this makes any sense.

Jin takes a deep breath before he starts to explain. “My parents did give it to me, but they found it at a vintage shop, so they must not have known. This whole week, I’ve felt...off. Strange. My brain has felt foggy, and my emotions have been almost impossible to control. Almost anything could set me off, no matter how trivial.” He looks at you meaningfully at this statement, knowing you’d been a victim of his anger. “I’m sorry for the way I acted towards you, truly,” he says softly, reaching forward like he wants to grab your hand, but thinks better of it and stops. Instead he continues with his explanation.

“I wasn’t acting like myself. I yelled at you, I yelled at Yoongi, I punched Jimin in the face…,” he blanches again as he lists his actions out loud. “But when Yoongi stopped me from punching Jimin a second time, the watch broke. As soon as it did, it felt like the fog lifted from my brain and I could finally think straight. Even though I had a massive headache, I realized it was cursed. I’ve been studying different types of curses since fifth year...it all made sense.”

“Well, at least you know what happened and now I know why you were acting so strange?” you offer gently. “You know, I was coming up here to give you a piece of my mind...I thought you were acting like this because…” you trail off meekly, suddenly embarrassed and staring at your feet.

You feel Jin lay his hand on your arm, and you look up at him. “Because of what?”

“Because...that night in the kitchens...I didn’t kiss you, and I-,” you start, but Jin quickly cuts you off.

“Merlin’s beard, I would never be mad about that! Whatever you’re comfortable with is fine with me, I just…” Now it’s Jin’s turn to be embarrassed, his ears starting to turn red. “I mean, did I want to kiss you? Yes, but I never would force…I’m so sorry you thought that.” He stammers out, ears getting redder by the second.

You elbow him in the side, laughing. “Good to know you aren’t a complete arse, then.”

He lets out a weak chuckle in response. “Yeah, I guess...I just...the watch was cursed, but that doesn’t excuse anything that I did really. It just magnified the way I was feeling and made me express it in ways that I wouldn’t normally? I shouldn’t even have had those feelings, but I’ve been stressed lately, and I-,” Jin starts to ramble, his voice going thick with emotion the more he talks.

“Hey, it’s okay...Jin, it’s okay,” you gently murmur, your hand patting his thigh. “I’m here if you want to talk about what’s been stressing you out.”

His eyes widen in surprise at your offer. HooDini, who has been intently listening to your conversation from Jin’s shoulder as if he understood every word, softly taps his beak on his owner’s cheek, as if to encourage him to talk.

“Well...my classes are hard, but the same goes for everyone’s seventh year,” he starts. “I think part of the reason I lashed out at you in class was because I know you’re really good academically, and I just have to work really hard to perform at that same level. Head Boy duties aren’t hard, they just take up extra time. You know I’m Quidditch captain, so that means long nights of developing gameplay strategies. I’m constantly looking out for Jeon, making sure he doesn’t overstep with Park - and then here I go, punching Park in the face instead. I’m the first wizard in my family, and I need to make sure I’m making my parents proud. My best friend is in Slytherin, which means we hang out in secret, which is so dumb now that I’m saying that out loud…”

Jin looks over at you. “I know I said a lot of messed up things while I was wearing that watch, but I am afraid one thing I said was right...you’re too good for me. I don’t deserve you coming up here and comforting me after all the things I said and did to you.”

You glare at him. “Good thing that’s not for you to decide, who I’m too good for. Jin, you are so deeply good...listen to you! I asked you to explain why you were stressed, and you started to talk about everyone’s classes being hard, and looking out for Jungkook, making your parents proud...you’re so concerned with making sure the people you care about are taken care of, you’re forgetting all about yourself. You have to make sure to take care of you. You are allowed to care about all those things you mentioned, but please ask for help if you need it. At least ask me. Or I’m sure Yoongi would be happy to help too, he really cares about you.”

All of a sudden, you’re pulled into Jin’s embrace, his head sitting on top of yours.

“Thank you,” he whispers softly in your ear, sending shivers down your spine. You wrap your arms around his torso in return as tightly as you can, hoping to convey your care through your touch. After a few moments, he pulls back, eyes watery with unshed tears.

“Are you okay? Are we...okay?” he asks nervously.

“We’re okay,” you smile. “As long as you promise to never call me a Nerd as an insult ever again.” You glare jokingly at him.

“Deal,” he chuckles.

“C’mon, I think we can still make it downstairs for dinner if we hurry.” You stand up from the alcove, putting your hand out to help Jin up. He gladly takes it, and HooDini flaps off his shoulder to a perch above your heads.

You both move towards the exit, and Jin keeps a tight grasp on your hand, causing your cheeks to warm.

Suddenly, he turns to you. “How did you even know to look for me up here?” he muses.

“Yoongi told me you’d either be here or in the Astronomy Tower...he’s a good friend, you know,” you smile.

“I know,” Jin grins at you, starting to look more and more like his normal self.

“The three of us should hang out sometime,” you offer as you walk downstairs.

“I think I’d like that-” he says, rubbing circles over your thumb with his own.

“-Nerd.” He finishes with a firm squeeze of your hand, smiling as he opens the door to the Great Hall.

-----------------------------------------------

The next few weeks go by quickly, and it feels like you have fallen into a comfortable routine. Breakfast in the Great Hall with Joon, classes, dinner with Sunny, and homework with Jin in your common rooms, switching off depending on the day. You’ve come to love the roaring fire and plush armchairs of the Gryffindor common room, it’s much cozier than drafty Ravenclaw Tower. You’ve spent so much time there, you’ve gotten to know Jungkook better, who likes to join you for homework sessions sometimes. You can tell he respects and admires Jin more than he would ever admit out loud, and it makes you smile every time you catch him trying to emulate him.

Jin has also gotten to hang out with Joon more because of being a semi-permanent fixture in the Ravenclaw common room. He’s even made good on his promise to include Yoongi, inviting him to your study sessions. It’s worked out rather nicely, since your common room is a more neutral space for the two of them. Ever since the showdown after the Hufflepuff game, Yoongi and Jin have dropped the pretense of their friendship being a secret, and started to hang out in the open. You know that if they met up in their respective common rooms, they would be inviting speculation and questions which they wanted to avoid (they would never tell you this, but you had a hunch). You found Yoongi a steady presence-he was quieter, much quieter than Jin, but he was kind and rational.

Your project has come along rather nicely with all your study sessions, in fact, you’ve found yourself ahead of your classmates. Which is how you currently find yourself being pulled by Jin out to the Quidditch pitch to watch the Gryffindor-Ravenclaw match. His fingers intertwined with yours, he laughs as you drag your feet and try to act like you aren’t excited.

This was now normal for you two...intertwined hands, always spending time together, falling asleep on each other’s shoulders when you stayed up too late working on homework. There had been no more almost-kisses, but you were comfortable like this. You weren’t sure what exactly all of it meant, but you were happy that you were back to feeling safe with Jin.

He laughs again as you protest. “If you’re making me go to this game, we’re sitting in the Ravenclaw section. You’re the one who’s benched for punching someone, so what I say goes,” you huff with a pout on your face.

“Oh fine, we can sit on your side. Only since I’m not playing...if I was, you’d have to sit on the Gryffindor side and cheer for your favorite player.” He shoots you a playful wink.

“You wish, Kim...it’s all over now that I know Jungkook, he’s my favorite. AND he’s funnier than you!” you exclaim, using his appalled silence to drag him over to the sea of blue and bronze on the Ravenclaw side of the stands.

The two of you climb up to the top of the seats, Jin insisting that the higher up you go, the more he can see of the game and make sure his players are following his game plan.

The game starts, the players mounting their brooms and taking off to the skies. The first half of the match goes smoothly, no sign of the Snitch from either Seeker. Every time there’s any kind of close call with any of his players, Jin tenses beside you, his hand jerking and grabbing your wrist. The third time a Chaser dodges a Bludger, you quietly slip your hand in his just before he goes to grab you. He looks over at you with a soft smile on his face and gently squeezes.

“Why are you so nervous? Don’t you trust them?” you ask.

“Implicitly, yes. I just want them to do well, that’s all-” he starts to reply, before rapid motion catches his eye. “JEON, WATCH OUT!” he suddenly bellows with no warning.

You turn your gaze to the pitch, only to see Jungkook narrowly miss a Bludger that had been aimed at a Chaser nearby.

Jin squeezes your hand again in apology. “Sorry I just yelled in your ear, I just don’t want him hurt.”

“You can’t yell for Gryffindor in the Ravenclaw section,” you tut, pulling out your wand with your free hand, “but I know an easy fix.” You wave your wand, and all of the red and gold on Jin’s robes morphs slowly into blue and bronze.

He looks down at himself in horror. “What did you do?! I’m the Gryffindor captain, I can’t wear Ravenclaw colors! Fix it, please?” He looks at you with big eyes, silently pleading with you.

You simply laugh and shake your head. “Nope. You dragged me to this game, you are sitting in the Ravenclaw section, and you will cheer for Ravenclaw, I don’t make the rules. Plus, you look cute in blue and bronze, maybe you should wear them more often.” You give him a cheeky wink to rival his own, and his cheeks go pink.

“I-you-,” he splutters. “You’re lucky I like you, you know that?”

“I know...you’re the best, Jinnie.” His cheeks go even darker upon hearing the new nickname, but he can’t help the enormous grin that spreads across his face.

“Ravenclaw it is, then.”

-----------------------------------

His choice to cheer for your team turns out to be wise, as Ravenclaw’s Seeker manages to nab the Snitch in a neck-and-neck race with Jungkook about an hour later, winning the game for your house.

“Aren’t you upset?”

“Nah...it’s just a game. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I love Quidditch, but I don’t live or die by our stats. My players followed the plan, and played excellently, what’s there to be mad at?” Jin’s leading you out of the stands, his broad shoulders carving an easy path to follow through the crowd.

You smile at his response, though he’s too busy saying ‘excuse me’ to people to notice it. As the crowd starts to thin out, you see Jungkook exiting the locker room.

You wave to get his attention and he smiles in your direction. “Good game, Jeon!” You rush forward to give him a hug, which he eagerly reciprocates.

“Thanks...wish we would’ve won though,” he sighs. He then catches sight of Jin approaching the two of you. “Kim, what are you wearing?” As you pull away from Jungkook, you see the look of utter disbelief on his face, eyebrows furrowed and his nose scrunched.

“You like? They’re this one’s doing,” he motions at you. “She said since I made her come to the game, I had to sit on Ravenclaw’s side with her, and then she had the audacity to charm my robes to her house’s colors. The gall, honestly.” Though he’s pretending to be annoyed, his eyes are sparkling with mirth and something else you can’t place as he gazes at you.

“Oh, get a room,” Jungkook rolls his eyes watching Jin banter with you, but can’t help laughing. “Seriously though, how was execution? I thought we were a little sloppy towards the middle of the game, including me…” Jungkook’s face scrunches up in thought.

“Jeon? You were fine, I couldn’t have asked for better execution. You’ll make a great captain next year. Keep it up.”

The Seeker’s eyes go wide at Jin’s statement, a grin slowly spreading across his face. “Really? Captain?”

“We’ll talk about it later, I need to make sure Nerd here gets back to her common room safely without getting distracted by the library or something else academic.” Jin waves goodbye to Jungkook, then grabs your hand and the two of you set off toward the castle.

“Distracted by the library, really?” You raise an eyebrow at him with a glare.

“I’m kidding...I just wanted to hang out with you alone.” He wiggles his eyebrows at you.

Your face pales, your hand dropping out of his out of nerves.

“Relax, it’s okay!” he quickly blurts out. “I made you banana bread, that’s all. Didn’t think you’d want to share with Jeon.” He reaches for your hand again, and you allow him to take it. He starts tracing soothing circles onto it, and you feel like you can breathe again.

“No funny business, I promise. Unless you want there to be,” he smirks at you. When you respond with silence, his eyebrows raise in surprise, but he doesn’t say anything. He simply leads you up the staircase towards the Gryffindor common room so he can grab your banana bread (that he hopes you’ll share with him), before the two of you head up to Ravenclaw Tower. You’re lost in thought the entire time up, not realizing you’d arrived until you hear the eagle door knocker asking its riddle of the day.

“Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?” the eagle asks in a melodious tone.

Of all things, it had to ask this. You’re honestly not sure...just as you think you’ve landed on the answer, another thought pops in your brain to disprove it.

“Neither,” you hear Jin’s baritone beside you. “It’s a cyclical relationship, and circles have no end. Or beginning.”

His answer is acknowledged by the door swinging open and letting the two of you inside. You gape at him in surprise.

“What? I’ve heard that thing ask enough riddles to figure out what kind it likes, and I’ve been able to guess most of the answers in my head by the time you answer. This is one of the easier ones, I reckon. Figured I’d help you out.” He shrugs and plops down on a couch.

You suddenly have the overwhelming urge to fling yourself at him and kiss him silly for being so cavalierly intelligent, which alarms you. Instead, you decide to sit down beside him and curl into his side with the piece of banana bread he offers you.

“See, no funny business.” He smiles down at you, wrapping his arm around your shoulder to draw you further into him. You sigh contentedly at the deliciousness of the bread, but also at the fact that you’re warm and cozy despite the wind whistling outside the window.

No funny business.

But what if you wanted something more to happen? What then?

----------------------------------------

A few days after the Ravenclaw-Gryffindor game (the last of the season), it’s confirmed over dinner by the headmaster that the Triwizard Tournament will be occurring. You’d talked with Sunny about the rumors swirling around, but you’re in disbelief that it’s actually happening.

During your study session that night (burrowed deep into a comfy armchair in the Gryffindor common room), you notice Jin seems preoccupied more than usual.

“Bee in your bonnet, Kim?” He looks up at you and smiles.

“Just thinking about the Triwizard Tournament...it hasn’t happened in so long. Not since 1994, I think?” Jin muses aloud.

“Yes, and for good reason-someone DIED. You’re not thinking of putting your name in, are you?” You narrow your eyes at him.

“I mean, it would be kind of cool-”

“Kim Seokjin, absolutely NOT! You are not going to enter the Triwizard Tournament, it’s way too dangerous, and don’t you have enough to be getting on with anyway?” You’ve put your homework aside, standing up and starting to pace in agitation. “You’re Quidditch captain, Head Boy, studying for N.E.W.T.s, and you want to be TRIWIZARD CHAMPION on top of all that?!” You’ve worked yourself into a frenzy, starting to emphatically emphasize each point you’re making with large hand gestures, refusing to look at the boy you’re yelling at.

“Hey, hey, hey...look at me, please?” Jin’s quiet voice breaks your rant. You look over at him, hands falling to your sides in defeat. “Come here.” He pats the space next to him on the couch. You collapse beside him, head falling back onto the cushion behind you.

“I said, come here.” He picks an arm up and places it across the top of the couch, motioning with his head for you to come closer. You scoot in, placing your head on his chest, his arm enveloping you once you settle.

“I just can’t have you getting hurt...or dying on me,” you murmur into his chest, not sure you’re loud enough for him to hear.

There’s a moment of silence where the sound of the crackling fire is the only thing filling the room.

“I won’t do it if you don’t want me to, love. If it worries you that much.” Jin’s voice is muffled through your hair, as he places a kiss on top of your head. The term of endearment has your heart beating so loud in your chest you’re sure he must be able to feel it. If so, he doesn’t say a word.

Instead, the two of you sit there in comfortable silence until you both fall asleep late in the night, only leaving when Jungkook shakes you awake gently with a knowing smile on his face.

--------------------------------------------------

The next Defense Against the Dark Arts class is a review of boggarts, your professor correctly assuming that everyone’s minds are preoccupied with the Triwizard Tournament and the choosing of the champions.

You expect the class to go by quickly, but a minor hiccup occurs when Jimin goes first to face his boggart. Two cold, icy blondes step out of the cabinet your professor is using to house the creature, and you can only assume they are his parents. Sunny quickly intervenes in the situation when she senses Jimin losing control. Once the boggart is contained, Jimin storms out of the classroom in embarrassment, Yoongi following closely behind to check on him. The chaos and distraction take up most of class, though your professor asks Jin to stay behind since he was the only one who didn’t get a chance to face the boggart.

You linger behind as well once the professor gives you a kind nod, agreeing that you can watch. Jin reaches in his robes, grabbing his wand and readying himself. What happens next startles both of you.

A carbon copy of yourself strides out of the cabinet, looking way more confident than you’ve ever felt. She smirks at Jin as she draws closer to him, beckoning him forward with a crook of her finger. You see him stumble forward a few steps, forgetting that she’s not you. As he leans down toward her, you hear her quiet voice.

“Kim Seokjin…” the boggart sounds almost seductive, pulling him closer with her words. She lays a hand on his arm. “You know no one really likes you, right? All your effort, for nothing. We’re just pretending,” she sneers, her voice cold and venomous. You see his eyes go wide and your heart clenches.

“That’s enough,” you step forward, wand at the ready. Your clone turns to you, calculating its next move. “Riddik-”

Before you can get the full spell out of your mouth, your own cruel smirk is replaced by one belonging to someone much taller with broad shoulders.

An eerie copy of Jin steps closer to you, eyes void of any emotion. It’s your turn to be caught off guard, wand clattering to the floor.

“You really thought you were different, hmm?” Boggart Jin sneers in derision at you. “Gryffindor’s Head Boy and Quidditch captain and some nameless Ravenclaw nerd? I could do much better.” He raises an eyebrow, daring you to disagree.

“And that’s quite enough for this class!” Your professor steps in front of the two of you, banishing the boggart back to its cabinet. She waves you off as you both try to apologize profusely, shooing you out the door.

You look at each other once you’re out in the hallway. You’re sure that the shell-shocked look Jin is giving you is mirrored on your own face. “Can we-” you start.

“Was that-” he says at the same time. You both laugh a little, though it feels stilted.

“...I don’t really want to talk about it, if that’s okay,” you confess.

Jin looks surprisingly relieved. “Yeah, I don’t think I want to either. I need some time to wrap my head around it.”

You sigh in relief. There’s no way you want to tell Jin how much it would hurt you if you were just a waste of time to him.

---------------------------------------------

The following days are a blur. Champions are announced for each school, with the stunning revelation that Sunny had secretly put her name in the Goblet of Fire as some sort of plan to make it less likely to choose Jimin. You were hazy on the details, but the fact that one of your best friends was competing, possibly to the death, made you feel sick to your stomach. You felt like you had no way to help her, but instead insisted upon Jin teaching her flying techniques once you found out the first task involved dragons.

“I don’t know how much help I’ll be, honestly. I don’t do agility flying, I’m there for the muscle,” Jin argues. “Besides, isn’t Park helping her? He’s a Seeker, much better equipped for that.”

You glare daggers at him.

“...but since it’s your best friend, of course I will help her,” he sighs in defeat and trudges away, going to find Sunny.

He reports back several hours later looking worse for wear, muddy and exhausted.

“Well, I helped. And that will be the last time I help.” He runs his hand exasperatedly through his hair. Before you start to protest, he cuts you off. “No, listen to me. Park was there helping too, and it was awkward. We were more of a distraction together than help, I promise you that. I apologized to him for punching him, by the way...I think we’re good now. As good as it’s going to get, anyway. But, as I was saying-Park’s got this. He’s got talent, he can help her, he cares about her. Let him do this. Can’t believe I’m saying that, but here we are.”

“...thank you,” you whisper.

“You’re welcome. Now, I’m going to go shower before this mud sticks to me permanently. I’ll see you later tonight.” He smiles at you before heading off to his common room.

Now you just hoped Park Jimin could figure out a way to make sure your best friend came out of this alive.

---------------------------------------------

The day of the first task comes too soon for your liking. You can’t help but clutch Jin’s hand tightly on the way to the arena, worried sick for your friend (who for some reason did not seem as worried about herself as you were).

You’d agreed to sit with Jungkook, Namjoon, and one of Jin’s other friends, a Hufflepuff named Hoseok. You’re surprised when you arrive to see Yoongi, Jimin and another black haired Slytherin boy in the same area. Stranger things have happened, you suppose...you were all cheering for Sunny, since she was the Hogwarts champion.

The announcer states the order of the champions facing the task, with Hogwarts being named last. The first two champions’ face-offs with their dragons seem to fly by, as Jin and Yoongi make sure to keep you distracted with conversation. Just as Sunny’s about to be introduced, the black haired Slytherin boy you don’t know turns to you.

“Hi, I’m Taehyung, one of Jimin’s friends. You’re pretty, how come we’ve never met before?” He throws a boxy grin your way, and you feel your cheeks go pink.

“Yes, she is really pretty, isn’t she?” Jin inserts himself in the conversation, making a point to put his arm around you.

Taehyung simply nods, grin never leaving his face, and turns back to his friends, continuing his conversation with them.

You glance up at Jin, who still has his arm slung around your shoulders.

“Jinnie, are you jealous?” you hum in amusement.

Before he has the chance to answer, the announcer’s voice booms out over the arena, announcing the beginning of Sunny’s task. As soon as she takes off from the ground, you squeal in nervousness and bury your face in the sleeve of Jin’s robes. Every so often, you peek at the chaos occurring, enough to know there is a smaller copper red dragon chasing your best friend, who is attempting to pluck a golden egg from its nest.

Even though your face is hidden, Jimin’s reactions combined with Jin’s running commentary (who knew he knew so much about dragons??) help you piece together what’s happening during the task. At one point, Jin’s gasp drags your attention to the action, where you see Sunny get injured. “She’ll be okay,” he murmurs in your ear as your eyes go wide as saucers and you hide again.

Around 15 minutes later, Jin is pulling you off his side. “Look! She did it, she got the egg!”

You see Sunny triumphantly holding the egg in her hands. You whoop and cheer loudly with your fellow students-your best friend managed to have the fastest time, putting Hogwarts in the lead coming out of the first task.

You hug Jin tightly in excitement, and don’t miss the relief painted across Jimin’s face.

Maybe you didn’t need to be so worried about Sunny after all.

----------------------------------------

It’s a gray, cold day several weeks later when you feel like you’ve forgotten something major. You look through your belongings, and you have everything you need. You weren’t meeting up with Jin until later, and Joon had just left from having breakfast with you, saying something under his breath about worms? You can’t figure out what it is you’re forgetting, if anything at all.

You decide to go to the library to shake off the feeling. Surely working on homework will help focus your brain.

An hour deep into studying, you feel like you’re being watched. Just as you’re about to get up and search through the stacks to see where the feeling is coming from, a small ball of feathers crashes onto your open textbooks.

“HooDini?!” you exclaim, as the tiny owl rights himself. He’s got feathers sticking every which way, and you can see a little sliver of blue on him.

“What’s this, then?” He hops in your hand when you place it in front of him and you bring him up to eye level. There is a small blue bow tie around the owl’s neck, which leaves you confused. Owls have clothes? They make clothes for owls? Why is he wearing a bow tie?

HooDini sticks out his leg, which has a small velvet pouch attached to it. You untie it gently and shake its contents out onto your hand, a small folded note. You open it, and you see Jin’s handwriting, alongside a drawing of two stick figures dancing.

Yule Ball with me?

Ah, so that’s what you forgot about. The large, ever looming dance for all three schools participating in the Triwizard Tournament.

You smile at his drawing, which includes convenient labeling of ‘You’ and ‘Me’ over the two figures. Snow dusts your hand and the top of HooDini’s head as you continue to look over the note. Wait...snow? You look up and a little cloud has formed over your hand and the note, soft flakes collecting over the surface of your palm. Poor HooDini keeps having to shake the fluff off his wings and head, but at least the snow isn’t cold.

As you watch, the cloud slowly disintegrates as if it was never there. The last flakes form a small pile in your hand, and you notice it feels heavy. You breathe out slowly, sending the flakes flying to the ground, and underneath you see something that wasn’t there before. A dainty gold snowflake necklace. Your eyes go wide, and even HooDini cocks his head, attention drawn by the shiny object.

You look back at Jin’s note, and see that another sentence has appeared underneath the first.

A pretty necklace for an even prettier girl. Hope you’ll say yes.-Jinnie

You feel dazed as you place HooDini down on the table, fastening the gift around your neck.

Gathering yourself, you scrawl out a response in the affirmative, sending HooDini back to his owner with a grin you can’t seem to erase.

---------------------------------------------

The days leading up to the Yule Ball are filled with excitement throughout the castle. Christmas decorations go up, even more extravagant than normal. Though you love the season anyway, it brings an extra wide smile to your face every time you see professors enchanting bits and baubles to hang from wreaths and trees scattered throughout the halls.

Though Sunny is a Triwizard champion, even they are given some time off to enjoy the excitement as well. The two of you plan a trip to Hogsmeade to catch up and to buy dresses for the upcoming dance. You’re not surprised when she tells you that she will be attending the ball with Jimin after all the time you’d noticed them spending time together. She even manages to pick a dress that will match his tie.

Sunny squeals when you tell her how Jin had asked you to the ball. “That’s so romantic,” she sighs. “Have you gone on a date yet?” You look at the floor in response. “Yah, what is wrong with you?! He’s clearly head over heels! I’ve been extra busy lately with the tournament, but even I’ve had time to notice the two of you being all snuggly on the couches in the common room, him feeding you his baked goods of the week. Is something wrong?”

You look at your best friend and sigh. “No? I mean, he’s good. Great. I think I’m what’s wrong…”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, remember how I told you about that night I snuck down to the kitchens to make cookies with him and we almost kissed?” Sunny nods, you had to tell someone about what had happened that night.

“Then the curse thing happened, and I thought he was mad that I didn’t kiss him, but he wasn’t, it was the watch...and then from there we just kind of fell into this routine of holding hands and hanging out and, and...I don’t know!” you exclaim, drawing stares from other customers of the shop you’re in.

“Do you like him?” Sunny’s question bounces around in your brain and makes your stomach queasy.

“I don’t know!” you repeat, quieter this time. “I like spending time with him...he’s kind, and he’s smart. Good at Quidditch, not that that matters in the long run, really. So funny. Is friends with everyone, and genuine about it. Obviously handsome.”

“Obviously?” Sunny snorts.

“You’ve seen him, haven’t you?” you glare at her. “You’re the one who pointed out his broad shoulders to me! Anyway, he’s all those things. Plus his baked goods are to die for.”

Your best friend hums in agreement, she’s been the recipient of some of your leftover treats.

“...and I kind of wanted to kiss him once when he answered the riddle to get into my common room?” you finish, your cheeks going bright red.

Sunny can’t help the wide grin that spreads across her face.

“I’ll ask you again then, since you didn’t actually answer. Do you like him?”

There’s a moment of silence as you wring your hands, looking anywhere but at your best friend.

“...yes?” you pitifully whisper, looking at the ceiling.

“What was that? I couldn’t hear you.” She leans in toward you with a hand cupped around her ear.

“I like Jin,” you manage to squeak out.

“Well now that you’ve finally admitted what we’ve all known for months, let’s find you a dress that will knock his socks off.”

--------------------------------------------

You nervously smooth down the skirts of your dress, the movement causing the gold sparkles to catch the light in your room. This level of fanciness was entirely out of your comfort zone...you would much prefer to be in your robes or a simple top and pants.

Instead, you are in a deep red dress that has a sparkly gold overlay over the bottom half. Your hair is pulled back into a low bun, showing off the necklace Jin had gifted you alongside dangly gold earrings. Though you are nervous, you can’t help smiling at the fact that you had thought of dressing in his house colors. You figured it was only fair, seeing that you’d forced him to wear Ravenclaw colors during the last Quidditch game of the season.

You head down to the Great Hall with Sunny and one of your housemates, who you’re pleased to find out is meeting Jungkook as her date. As you arrive at the main landing of the Grand Staircase, you smile as Jungkook approaches the three of you and offers your housemate his arm. After waving them off, you and Sunny continue downstairs to the entrance hall in front of the Great Hall.

You’re nervous, fiddling with your necklace when you see Jin waiting with Jimin at the bottom of the staircase. He looks nervous as well, making sure his normally messy hair is smoothed back off his forehead with one hand, the other hand pulling at his tie to make sure it’s not too tight. As you get closer, you can’t help but laugh. He looks very dapper, almost like a prince has been ripped out of one of your childhood fairytale books and placed in front of you. What makes you laugh is that his dress robes are deep blue, his tie bronze. A Ravenclaw prince.

His eyes light up when he sees you, his long legs taking wide steps to get to you as fast as he can. He offers you his hand when he reaches you, and you gladly accept. He pulls you away from the wall, spinning you in the middle of the entrance hall, your dress flaring out around you.

“You look absolutely stunning,” he breathes as you feel his gaze travel down your body. He pulls you closer to him, his hand lightly trailing over your exposed collarbone until he lands on your necklace. His touch feels like it’s leaving fire in its wake. “You wore it,” he smiles, his eyes meeting yours again.

“You gave it to me, of course I did.” You grab his hand, intertwining your fingers and holding him at arm’s length. “Seokjin, you look so handsome.” Both of you flush at your comment.

“And you look like a princess...a Gryffindor princess, at that,” his lips quirk up into a smirk.

“Seems we both had the same idea then,” you smile, gesturing at his outfit.

“You said I looked cute in blue and bronze, I only dress to impress, my lady,” he says, offering you his arm. You take it, and he guides you into the Great Hall.

You gasp as you walk in. There are giant Christmas trees everywhere, a live band, and the ceiling is enchanted deep as the night sky, stars twinkling while snow falls, disappearing just above the crowd of students milling around.

The two of you watch as the champions begin the festivities with a ceremonial dance. As soon as it’s finished, Jin immediately pulls you out onto the dance floor. Dancing is not something you’re great at, but with Jin’s lead, the two of you manage to look like you’re floating. Is there anything he’s not good at?

After a few dances, you weave your way through the crowd to get drinks. As you approach the large punch bowl, a younger boy with shaggy long black hair walks up, clapping Jin on the shoulder.

“Kill ‘Em Kim, murdering the dance floor, too?” The younger boy laughs.

“Beomgyu, what are you doing here?” Jin matches his smile.

“Yule Ball’s for fourth years and up, remember? Plus I invited Adélie...and she said yes.” Beomgyu cackles with glee, pulling a flask out of the inside of his robes.

“The Beauxbatons champion?!” Jin splutters in disbelief. He just nods, as if it’s no big deal.

“What are you doing?” you ask, catching the younger student’s attention as he unscrews the lid of the flask.

“Making this ball more exciting, that’s what. I’m Beomgyu, by the way-since Kim’s too rude to introduce me. 4th year, Gryffindor’s star Keeper.” He reaches out with his free hand, grabs yours, and brings it to his lips.

“Hey, that’s no way to speak to your captain!” Jin has his eyes narrowed at Beomgyu, but they’re sparkling with mirth.

“Yeah, yeah...you gonna tell on me Head Boy, or look the other way?”

“What are you doing?” you ask again.

“Laughing Potion,” he shrugs, tipping the flask toward the punch.

Jin catches his wrist just as the liquid is about to pour out, and leans closer to Beomgyu, making sure his next words can’t be heard by anyone but the three of you.

“You’re sure you’ve brewed this right, and won’t be sending half the school to the hospital wing in hysterics?”

The younger Gryffindor scoffs. “I’m top of my year in Potions, or did you forget? As much as all the Slytherins hate it.”

Jin lets go of his wrist and smirks. “I didn’t see anything. Have fun with your date, Beom.”

The two of you walk away from the punch bowl. A few minutes later, you see Beomgyu walk over to a group of French students like nothing ever happened.

You join Sunny and Jimin at a table where they’re taking a break from dancing as well.

“I’m getting thirsty...you want anything?” Jimin goes to stand up, looking at Sunny to see if she needs a drink.

“I wouldn’t get the punch,” you giggle.

“Why?” Sunny raises an eyebrow at you.

“It just tastes...funny.” Jin makes eye contact with you, emphasis on his last word. You both burst into laughter, Jimin and Sunny utterly confused.

Just then, Jungkook and his date walk by your table, the former covering his mouth looking alarmed at the loud laughter that’s pouring out of him.

Your eyes find Beomgyu across the room, and he salutes you with a smirk.

All of a sudden, Jin grabs your hand and pulls you towards the door.

“Where are we going?” you ask.

“I wanted to escape before the ball breaks down into a cackle of hyenas...nothing can be traced back to us then,” he grins. “Plus, I wanted to show you something.”

Jin leads you to the Grand Staircase, up and up and up seemingly endless amounts of stairs.

“How...much...further?” you huff, breathless.

“We’re here.”

He opens a door to the top of the Astronomy Tower. You step through, him following behind you.

The night is crisp and chilly, the stars burning brightly in the sky. It’s even more beautiful than the Great Hall had been. When you turn back to Jin, he’s holding out his hand.

“May I have this dance?”

“You may.” You grab his hand, and he pulls you in close, his hands on your waist. Your hands snake around his neck as the two of you start to sway, no music necessary.

“I wanted to show my favorite person my favorite place in the castle. And maybe I’m selfish and wanted you to myself for a little bit.” Jin smiles softly down at you, his forehead leaning against yours.

You sway in silence for a little bit, his fingers tracing absentmindedly over your hips. His touch feels like fire again, even through your dress. You lean your head against his chest and close your eyes. This feels...right. You can’t explain it.

“You remember in class when we had to face our boggarts?”

You hum in acknowledgement of his question.

“I know we talked in the Owlery about how I feel a lot of pressure to do well, including in my relationships with friends and family. So I’m sure you understand why the boggart said what it said about people pretending to like me.”

There’s silence between the two of you. You can sense there’s more he wants to say, and you allow him the time he needs to say it.

“But I couldn’t figure out why it was you at first. Wouldn’t it make sense for it to be Yoongi, or my parents? Jungkook even. But then I realized...I would be heartbroken if the one person who really sees who I am was pretending.” Jin sighs.

You pull gently away from him, looking him in the eyes. He’s being completely truthful, you can tell. His emotions are written all over his face.

You reach out and wrap your hands around his.

“I would never pretend,” you breathe quietly, but it feels like you’re screaming. “Never.”

“I know.” Jin is looking at you with that same emotion you couldn’t place after the Ravenclaw-Gryffindor Quidditch game.

You take a deep breath. “My boggart…”

“You don’t have to talk about it just because I did.” Jin squeezes your hands in reassurance.

“No, I want to. My boggart caught me off guard because I didn’t expect to care so much about you so quickly.” You sigh. “I couldn’t stand the thought of you thinking I was a waste of your time.”

His face falls at your statement, his hands dropping from yours to cup your face instead.

“You could never be a waste of my time. Ever. I love spending time with you, I-,” he starts to stumble over his words.

“You what?”

He’s tapping his foot on the stone floor, looking seemingly everywhere but you. When he finally brings his gaze down from the heavens to you, it looks like some of the stars have been transplanted from the sky into his eyes. He’s looking at you with that same emotion you can’t name, the one that’s appeared more and more frequently lately.

“...I think I love you. And I think I have for a while.”

Your mouth drops open. The fire that was localized to his touch is now spreading through your entire body, contrasting with your brain that feels completely frozen.

Jin’s hand is now carding through your hair as your brain tries to play catch up.

“You don’t have to say anything right now, I know you, and I know you need time to process. I’ll wait for as long as you need. But for now, I’m just glad you said yes to me. To this moment.” He drops a kiss on top of your head.

Jin’s right. Your head is spinning, and you can’t completely figure out what’s happened. What you do know is you are very much in awe of the man standing in front of you.

“How in the world are you so brave?” you wonder out loud.

“I think you’re just as brave as I am, you just have to let your heart be courageous when it wants to be,” he smiles, interlocking your fingers once again. “Plus I’m a Gryffindor, remember?” You shove against his chest with your joined hands, laughing.

“Come on, Prince Charming...let’s go make sure our friends haven’t collapsed into a permanent fit of laughter, yeah?”

The two of you head back to the Great Hall hand in hand. You can’t help but notice the fire Jin had set burning inside you has settled into a warm, cozy feeling that only grows each time you see him look at you.

That’s what that feeling was that you kept noticing but couldn’t name...love.

----------------------------------------------

The next morning you’re eating breakfast with Sunny when she casually mentions that Jimin kissed her at the Yule Ball.

“What?!” you squeal, bacon dropping off your fork back onto your plate.

She just grins back at you, nodding her head in affirmation.

“Well, are you dating now, or what?” You steal a glance over your shoulder to the Slytherin table and see the blond boy chatting with Taehyung and Yoongi.

“I don’t think so...we didn’t talk about it. The tournament is kind of my first priority.” Sunny looks slightly perturbed, but you don’t press the subject.

It’s her turn to be shocked when you tell her about your conversation with Jin on top of the Astronomy Tower. Her mouth forms a small o, gaping at you.

“Okay, but what did you say back?” she hisses, trying not to draw extra attention to the two of you.

“Nothing yet. He knows I don’t do well in the moment with feelings sometimes, so he just said what he wanted to say and that was the end of it.”

“Okay...so what are you gonna say back? You’re going to tell him you love him too, right?” Her eyebrow is raised expectantly.

“I mean...I think so? I’ve never been in love, so this all feels weird. I like him a lot, I know that much,” you shrug.

Sunny rolls her eyes and turns back to her breakfast.

“And I thought I made my life complicated.”

---------------------------

Things between you and Jin feel surprisingly normal after his confession. He knows he needs to give you time, and doesn’t push you to say anything. Instead, he devotes himself to showing how much he cares for you through his actions.

During your study sessions in the library, he brings your favorite baked goods (that just so happen to be his favorite to make).

Jungkook and Beomgyu become his personal delivery boys, bringing you freshly conjured flowers each week. Each week is something different, until he notices how much your eyes light up the day you receive purple roses. Every delivery from then on is full of the purple blooms.

His favorite moment, however, is the final night of working on your Defense Against the Dark Arts project. Despite the roar of the fireplace, he’d still noticed you shivering every so often. He gives you one of his sweatshirts, a deep gold with his last name and Quidditch number embroidered in maroon on the back. It absolutely swallows you whole, shoulder seams falling halfway down your arms and the length could almost pass for a dress.

It makes Jin’s heart beat double time to see you wearing his last name, and it takes everything in him not to just grab your face and kiss you. Instead, he sits next to you on the couch and continues talking with you about your final presentation on the Imperius Curse.

You feel surrounded by him. His voice, his warmth as you curl into his side, his scent that lingers on his sweatshirt you’re wearing. Nothing fancy, just a clean smell, always with a hint of cinnamon from his baking.

“Earth to Nerd, hello?” He squeezes your shoulder to grab your attention.

“H-huh? What?”

“I asked if this looked okay to you.” He points at the last paragraph of your presentation notes.

You spare a quick glance over what he’s motioning to, nodding your approval. Just then, a clock strikes eleven.

“I should get going, it’s late. I don’t want Jungkook to have to wake me up again.” You stand and stretch, beginning to remove Jin’s sweatshirt to return it to him.

He stops your motions by grabbing your wrist. “Keep it, it looks good on you,” he smiles softly.

“Are you sure?”

“Absolutely positive.” He walks with you across the room. Just before you exit, he grabs you and pulls you into a long hug. “I’ll see you tomorrow in class. Try to get some sleep, please? Sweet dreams, love.” He gently kisses your forehead.

Once you return to Ravenclaw Tower, you can’t bring yourself to remove Jin’s sweatshirt, instead opting to sleep in it. You stare at the ceiling of your four-poster bed for a while, thinking back to what Sunny had asked you earlier-what are you going to say back? Because right now, you only have one thought continuously running through your head like a heartbeat.

I love you too.

-----------------------------------

A few days later, you’re still riding high on the Outstanding marks you’d achieved on your project, gushing to Namjoon over lunch about how excited you were that your hard work paid off, how proud you were of Jin for the compliments his work had received.

Suddenly, a large bouquet of purple roses moves toward you from across the room. As it gets closer, you see shaggy black hair peek around the sides.

“Hey Beom,” you greet the younger boy as he shoves the flowers toward you.

Instead of greeting you in return, he scowls. “If you don’t tell him how you feel, I will put love potion in your pumpkin juice and force you. I know he’s patient, but I’m not...and I am not a flower delivery service.”

“You wouldn’t…” You narrow your eyes at the Gryffindor Keeper.

He matches your stare as you take the roses into your arms. “Try me.” And with that, he walks back over to his table.

Joon laughs into his goblet of juice as you struggle to put the bouquet on the table.

“He’s right, you know. You should tell him.” Your friend smiles gently over at you, amusement dancing across his features as you finally get the roses to sit without toppling onto your plates.

“I know. I’m just...nervous.” You fiddle with the small snowflake around your neck.

“What about it makes you nervous? What you’re going to say? Or how he’ll react?” Joon has turned toward you, intent on making you feel heard and supported as best he can. After all, you’d helped him work out his own feelings towards a certain Hufflepuff.

“I think how to say it, or what to say exactly? I already know how he feels, so I know it will be a good reaction. Or I hope, anyway.”

Your friend lays his hand on your arm and squeezes gently in reassurance. “Hey...I know you think things need to be perfect, but love is...messy. Dirt included, in my case.” He chuckles. “What I’m trying to say, though, is there’s no perfect way to be in a relationship with a person. Whatever you decide to say, however you decide to say it, I’m sure Jin will love it.”

“But how do you know?” you plead, searching Joon’s gaze for the answer.

“I know because I know Jin. And Jin loves you more than I think even he realizes.” He gestures behind you to the Gryffindor table. As you look over, you see Jin animatedly telling a story to Jungkook, Beomgyu, and the rest of his Quidditch team, arms windmilling around in large circles. He looks over and sends you an equally over the top wink and blows you a kiss.

Even as your cheeks darken, you stand abruptly and start gathering your things.

“Where are you going?” Namjoon questions, curious if what he’s said has helped.

You glance over at your best friend, grinning.

“I’m going to make scones.”

-----------------------------------------

Several hours later, you are covered in flour and dough residue as you make your way up to the Ravenclaw common room. It had taken three tries to get it right, but you have a tin of cinnamon chip scones tucked under your arm that you are planning on giving to Jin after class the next day...and then you would tell him you loved him too.

You smile to yourself as you set the tin on your nightstand and crawl into bed. You’re still nervous, but after talking to Namjoon, you’re mostly excited.

The next morning, you walk into Defense Against the Dark Arts just before class begins, only to see your tablemate suspiciously missing. This was not how this was supposed to go. Jin’s absence makes you nervous...did something happen? Was he sick? You nervously tap your foot against your chair for half the class, the professor asking you to stop several times because it’s so distracting.

As the clock strikes 30 past the hour, you can’t take it anymore. You hastily throw your books in your bag and sprint out of the classroom with a quick apology, Jimin, Sunny and Yoongi staring confusedly after you.

You barrel your way up to Gryffindor Tower, and arrive in front of the Fat Lady’s portrait out of breath.

“Are you okay, love?” You look up to see the portrait in question staring at you with concern. You give a barely perceptible nod, still trying to catch your breath.

“Oh, you’re that sweet Ravenclaw that our Captain and Head Boy is seeing...I always thought you’d be cute together!” she coos as you finally stand up straight. “Where is he?” She attempts to peer around you, as if Jin will magically appear.

“That’s what I’m trying to figure out...he didn’t show up in class this morning, so I thought I would check here first,” you explain.

“Well, I’m not supposed to let non-Gryffindors in without an escort…”

“Please, I-he told me he loved me, so I need to give him these scones and tell him I feel the same way-” You’re not sure why you’re telling the Fat Lady all about your life and feelings, but she cuts you off.

“Say no more! Password?” She smiles down at you.

“Fizzing Whizzbee?” You ask, hoping the password hasn’t changed since you were here last.

The Fat Lady’s portrait swings open, granting you access to the Gryffindor common room. You think you hear her murmur something about ‘young love’ as you enter.

You glance around the room, the boy you’re looking for nowhere to be seen. You decide you’ll wait for a little bit to see if he appears. Rounding the large armchairs, you’re surprised to see Jungkook half asleep in one. He jerks fully awake as you sit down beside him, his eyes widening when he realizes it’s you.

“How’d you…?” he starts.

“I knew the password. Jin didn’t show up in class and I don’t know where he is. So I figured this would be a good place to start.”

Jungkook nods. “Be my guest. I haven’t seen him today, so he may still be upstairs.” He watches as you start to nervously tap your fingers against your tin of scones. “You okay?”

“I think so...actually, you can help me.” The younger boy raises an eyebrow expectantly. “Try one of these scones for me and tell me how it is?” You lift the lid and push the tin towards him. Jungkook is so used to trying Jin’s baked goods, he doesn’t even question it, grabbing one from the top and taking a bite.

You watch nervously as he chews, looking deep in thought. “Well?”

“...pretty good. It’s a little dry though. Not as good as Jin’s.” Your shoulders sink in disappointment.

Just then, you hear steps on the staircase up to the boys’ dormitory. You look over to see Jin rubbing his eyes, hair mussed from sleep. His eyes widen as he catches sight of you.

“Nerd? What are you doing here? How did you get in?” You grab your tin from Jungkook and walk towards Jin, the Seeker using the opportunity to slink out of the room to give you privacy.

“I remembered the password from the other day. You weren’t in class and I got worried, so I figured this would be a good place to look first?” You answer shyly.

Jin gives you an embarrassed smile. “That’s sweet of you...I overslept, that’s all. Thus the hair.” He points to the unruly mess on his head and chuckles.

“I brought you scones.” You lift the tin towards him, and he takes one and bites into it, chewing thoughtfully.

“Did you make these yourself?”

“By hand,” you nod. “What do you think?”

“I think...” he starts, grabbing the tin from you and setting it on a table, “...it might be the best scone I’ve ever-”

His sentence is interrupted as your lips crash into his own. You’re not sure what exactly had come over you, but you don’t have time to figure it out because everything is suddenly Jin.

He smells like soap, he tastes like cinnamon, and he feels...he feels simultaneously safe and dangerous all at once. The kiss had surprised him, but once his body unfreezes from the shock, one hand wraps around your waist, the other finding its way into your hair. As his hand toys with the hem of your shirt, fingers tracing over your bare skin, you gasp into his mouth.

Your gasp elicits a low moan from the back of his throat as his tongue makes its way into your mouth. The fire you felt from his touch at the Yule Ball reappears, exploding into an inferno. As you explore each others’ mouths, you pull him backwards onto a couch, where you awkwardly fall into his lap. The two of you break apart momentarily, Jin breaking into a husky laugh. Then his mouth is attached to yours once again, your hands roaming over his chest and sneaking under his shirt to discover that feeling his abs for yourself was so much better than the sneak peek you had gotten all those months ago in the kitchens.

His grip tightens around your waist as if he’s afraid you may slip out of his grasp. You move your mouth from his down towards his neck, his breath growing ragged as you start to leave a wet trail of kisses from his jawline to his collarbone.

“If I would have known complimenting your baking was all it took, I would have asked for scones forever ago,” he growls in your ear, sending shivers down your spine.

You lean back to look at him, his dark eyes blown out with want. “I think it’s a little more than just the scones, don’t you think?” you ask, landing a kiss on his temple. He cocks his head to the side in response.

“I didn’t come up here to do this-”, you motion between the two of you, where you still sit on his lap, “-I came here to tell you I love you too. My heart decided it wanted to be brave.”

His eyes immediately soften and he leans in and kisses your forehead. “That scone really was the best I’ve ever had, then.”

---------------------------------------------

Though the two of you hadn’t had a formal conversation about your relationship and where it stood after what you both starting referring to as the ‘infamous scone incident’ occurred, Jin quickly made his intentions known when he showed up to breakfast one morning with a large package of Fizzing Whizzbees from Honeydukes. He sat down beside you, placing the candy in front of you.

“Be my girlfriend,” he blurts unceremoniously. Namjoon can’t help but laugh from across the table. Jin glares at him and turns back to you.

“What I mean to say is, would you be my girlfriend? These are for you,” he pushes the Fizzing Whizzbees in your direction. You raise your eyebrow in question.

“The password to the Gryffindor common room the day of the infamous scone incident,” he smirks. You proceed to turn as red as his tie. Jin chuckles and leans in for a quick kiss, causing you to go even redder, if that was even possible. “What do you say, Nerd?”

“I say...I’d love to,” you bring yourself closer to him, “And I love you.” You tap your finger on the tip of his nose, causing him to go slightly cross eyed following the motion, nose scrunching at your touch.

“C’mon loverboy, we have things to do.” Jungkook pulls Jin up by the hood of his robes, laughing. The older boy starts to follow him reluctantly, but not before dashing back to give you another quick kiss on the lips.

“I’ll see you later!” you call out to his hastily retreating form, turning back to Namjoon.

“You two are gross, you know that, right?” he smiles, and you can’t help grinning in return.

“I know.”

------------------------------------------

Surprisingly, there isn’t that much that changes once Jin is your boyfriend. You still have meals with Joon and Sunny, classes go on as normal, and the two of you still switch common rooms each night to work on homework.

There are small changes that make you smile, though. Beomgyu and Jungkook are no longer flower delivery boys, Jin bringing you fresh blooms instead. Sometimes you make Jin baked goods, though nothing compares to that first batch of scones you brought to the Gryffindor common room. If he’s feeling cheeky, Jin will pull you into the restricted section of the library for a quick (sometimes not-so-quick) makeout session, whispering in your ear about how you’re his favorite nerd.

Sunny manages to survive the second task of the Triwizard Tournament, though it’s almost a close call for Jimin. She had to rescue him from the bottom of the Black Lake. After watching from the sidelines, you feel like you’re being extra clingy with Jin, getting lost in imagining what you would have done if it was him dragged to the bottom of the lake. However, he’s the one that surprises you that night, turning to you outside the Ravenclaw common room to say goodbye.

“Hey...I’m glad you talked me out of putting my name in the Goblet of Fire. I don’t think I could have survived you being taken from me like that.” He traces small circles on your skin where your hands are intertwined.

Tears suddenly form in your eyes as you bring your free hand to his face. “Me either. I love you. So much.” You lean forward to kiss him.

“I love you more, Nerd.” He squeezes your hand before letting it go, watching you reluctantly enter your common room.

Epilogue

The third task occurs towards the end of the year, a month before N.E.W.T.s. Sunny ends up passing out from an injury before she can find the Triwizard Cup in the Forbidden Forest, but you’re honestly just relieved everything is over and your friend hasn’t died like Cedric Diggory did all those years ago.

You and Jin are regular visitors at the hospital wing until she’s released, but it seems like Park Jimin never leaves her side. It makes you smile to see the normally cold Slytherin’s mask fall the more he’s around your best friend. Jin whispers conspiratorially to you that he thought they would be good together since the Gryffindor-Slytherin Quidditch game, and you just roll your eyes.

Once Sunny is back on her feet, Jin invites you, her, and Jimin on a double date to Hogsmeade to celebrate the end of the year. You and Sunny are wary of keeping the two boys in the same space for an extended amount of time, but there is a surprising lack of glares and snide remarks between them. They even offer to accompany each other to The Three Broomsticks for butterbeers while the two of you shop for clothes. It gives you a chance to catch Sunny up on everything she’s missed while she’s been in the hospital wing recovering, including all the juicy details of your relationship with Jin. You’ve missed her. Joon was great, but there was just no replacing your best friend.

On the way to meet up with the boys, you pass a small secondhand bookstore, which you drag Sunny into.

“What are we looking for, exactly?” she asks.

“We’re just looking, that’s the point...you don’t know what you’ll find,” you state, eyes growing wide with excitement as you look at the tall bookshelves surrounding the two of you.

30 minutes later, you’re exiting the shop with a large bag full of books. The Healer’s Helpmate and Healing at Home with Herbs, so you could take notes on your future career. An old copy of The Beaters’ Bible, so you could better understand your boyfriend’s Quidditch position. A Muggle cookbook that you’d found shoved on a back shelf that you were planning on surprising Jin with later. And A Magical Attraction, just for fun.

You’ve only walked a few steps when a pair of arms envelops you from behind. “I missed you,” Jin whispers in your ear as you giggle. He releases you and you turn towards him. “What’ve you got here?” He reaches into your bag and pulls out the romance novel that’s sitting on top. “A Magical Attraction? I didn’t know you were into centaurs…” He points at the male lead on the cover, a ridiculously muscular half man, half horse hybrid. You reach to grab the book from Jin, but he moves it out of your reach. “My abs are definitely better than this guy’s...or did you need an in-person reminder?” He smirks dangerously at you, reaching for the hem of his shirt. “I seem to remember you telling me that they were one of your favorite features of mine.” You burn scarlet as you quickly jump up and grab the book out of his grasp and shove it back in your bag.

“Remind me to never go shopping with you again.”

--------------------------------------

You’re sitting in the Ravenclaw common room a few days later, reading A Magical Attraction away from your boyfriend’s prying eyes, when you see HooDini tapping on the window.

Scurrying over to the window, you let in the tiny owl who looks like he’s about to be blown away by the wind. He lands on the arm of the chair you were just sitting in, sticking out his leg with a note attached. You pet his head as you untie the note, the owl tilting his head and looking at the writing as if he can understand his owner’s message.

Study date in the library tonight instead of Gryffindor common room? Meet me in the restricted section. ;) -Your favorite boyfriend

You stifle a laugh as you send HooDini back with your answer.

True to his word, you’ve barely set down your things that night and said hello before Jin is pulling you behind a bookcase, his lips finding your neck.

“J-Jin…” you stammer.

He hums in response. “Say my name again.”

“Jin…” you repeat, your thoughts starting to cloud with desire. He grabs your hands and guides them under his shirt, over his toned stomach.

“You’re so beautiful, you know that?” Jin pulls away from your neck to kiss both cheeks, finally landing on your lips.

You drag your fingers across his abs, and he shudders. “Is this your way of proving you’re more attractive than a fictional character?” you laugh.

“And what if it is?” he pouts, removing his backwards ballcap to run his fingers through his hair.

“It’s working.” You reach out and grab both sides of his face, pulling him down into a kiss that he smiles into.

“Good. Now, I believe I promised you studying?” He grabs your hand, intertwining your fingers and leads you back to your table.

By the end of the night, the two of you are exhausted, making each other yawn every ten minutes or so. During one particularly large yawn, you take advantage of his distracted state to slip the cookbook you’d bought a few days before into his bag without him noticing.

You smile to yourself as he walks you up to Ravenclaw Tower, knowing he’s none the wiser. He refuses to let you answer the door’s riddle, the door swinging open for his display of intelligence. You kiss him goodnight, and tell him you’ll see him in class the next day.

When he arrives back at his dormitory, he throws his bag on the bed and flops down beside it, causing his books to spill over the edge and onto the floor. He leans down to pick them up, and notices an unfamiliar text. He grabs the blue cover and turns it over. Simply Scones.

He flips through the pages, a piece of paper fluttering out onto the ground. When he picks it up, he notices your simple neat handwriting.

I picked this up for you the other day in that secondhand shop and wanted to surprise you. I’m sure we can use some of these recipes to fuel N.E.W.T. study dates, and I wouldn’t even mind a repeat of the infamous scone incident. ;) -Your favorite Nerd

P.S. I’d choose you over a centaur any day.

He smiles to himself as he places the cookbook on his bedside table, crawling under his covers and turning out the light.

He hopes you’ll be his favorite nerd forever.

Request From An Anon: Ravenclaw Reader X Harry Where She Meets James, Lily, Sirius, Remus, Etc For The

“You’re sure the house apparel is okay?”

The words tumble out your mouth as you smooth out your blue sweater for the fifth time over the ten minute walk back to Harry’s Parent’s house. You thought meeting his family after your date instead of before would ease some of your nerves, but the opposite had occurred. Dinner had giving you more time to ponder over all the things that could go wrong.

While you don’t doubt that his family is just as amazing as he is, meeting them is working you up a little. For some reason, meeting them just feels so official. Not that you aren’t sure about Harry. You plan to cling to his side until he’ll no longer have you. (Which you hope is a day that’ll never come.) It just sends a kaleidoscope of fast-fluttering butterflies to your stomach to know things were getting serious. That he was serious about you.

“I’ve told you, it’s fine.” He squeezes your hand And kisses the side of it. The affection is almost enough to make you drop the anxiousness completely. “They won’t pay much attention to your sweater. And even if they do, you look great. Better than that. You look perfect.” His words bring a warm flush to your cheeks as you nibble on your lip, now with something akin to bashfulness.

“I just want this to go—“

“—perfectly, I know.”

His smile is calm and kind, like you’re being completely reasonable and not freaking out over nothing. “If I’m honest, I don’t see how it could go any other way. You’re perfect, so everything you do is just as. By extension.” A sheepish giggle bubbles from your throat as you squeeze his hand. “Science?” You tease as your shoulders start to relax “Hardly. Everything you do is magic,” he stops walking to give you a little smirk. “Literally.” You reward him with another, louder and more boisterous, laugh. (Next time he wants to go for full belly.)

As you approach his house, you look at him one more time for reassurence. He presses his lips to your cheek. “They’ll love you. Seriously, what’s not to like?” He kisses your other cheek. “And even if they don’t—which won’t happen—they’ll have to warm up to you because I really, really like you. More than that. I love you.” Your eyes widen like saucers, but he chooses is to ignore it for now. “So this’ll be fine, yeah?” He doesn’t wait for your answer as he pushes the door open, dragging you and your saucer eyes through the door.
