me : oh wow these two make an amazing pair! they were canonically best friends for decades that i wish we could've seen, there's just the right amount of angst with them falling out, the first half of the otp dies later in the series and their last act was a clue to their murder that ONLY THE SECOND HALF OF THE OTP WOULD BE ABLE TO FIND OUT, that second half quite literally risked dying just to kill the first half's murderer, even years after the second half's death the first half still relies on them heavily, its the perfect best friends to lovers (to strangers) trope-

first, there's a criminal minds scene i really like. it's that scene in 3x07- the one where emily and morgan (and reid, against his will😭) slip into rossi's new office. they look around for a minute, profile the place, and morgan grabs what looks like a painting from a box. reid analyzes it, assures the rest of the team that it's definitely an original piece. they assume their new team member to be an "italian who loves the classics and had a strict catholic upbringing".

... see, the art is only shown on screen for a minute. and the only screenshot i could get of it was so blurry-

it's titled "study for a christ", and it's by famous italian renaissance artist andrea mantegna. it was created around 1478 - to 1490.

i think they only used it because the last name is mantegna, like the actor who plays rossi (joe mantegna), but wowww......

this also makes me giggle a little bit because Wow 😭😭😭! rossi's "that piece cost more than my first house" comment makes a lot of sense now.

this painting is a little chilling! two great-footed hawks devouring these poor ducks, the way one of them stares into the "camera", the way the other has blood dripping down its beak. not even MENTIONING the way one of the ducks is nearly crying blood.

. it's wild!

this was it!

this was the painting that jason gideon, while bleeding out and panicking and trying to figure out SOME way to leave a clue for the team to find- because he knows the team would find him soon- shot. he shot it right in the bloodied beak of that bird (alliteration!), too.

this is the painting that rossi picks up and stares at, in total shock. silence. morgan barely has a chance to ask him what he's thinking before rossi grabs spencer and takes him on that trip to the bunker.

that painting is the One Thing that solved that case.

gideon KNEW rossi was on the team, somehow. he knew rossi had taken his place, and he knew that rossi would immediately be able to figure out the clue. he knew that rossi would push it enough to go all the way to roanoke, even if everybody else on the team thought it might be a stretch.

so what does all that mean? it's simple, really :

jason gideon's dying thoughts were of david rossi.

and there's one more thing to mention.

as this is pretty much gideon's official "farewell" episode, i think the inclusion of the ducks is.. very cool! especially if they're dead.

The new reboot is already killing me. Wrote a tiny blurb fanfic to get it off my chest. I can’t stand what they did to Krystall..

broke : gideon is represented by birds (more specifically nelson's sparrows)

woke : gideon is represented by DUCKS (because of rossi shooting a duck in his intro in "about face"- signaling that gideon is gone for good, AND the duck painting gideon shot in "nelson's sparrow")

bespoke : Rossi Is Represented By Nelson's Sparrows (because the "nelson's sparrow" case basically became gideon's obsession, his "white whale", and killed him in the process- and rossi has long since picked up the habit of obsessing over cases)

thinking very much today about how the entirety of "nelson's sparrow" was probably like ripping open the stitches of an old wound, for rossi?

(yes of course the episode focused a large amount on reid's grief, and you could say the exact same thing for reid!... but literally Everyone Has. like. come ON ?????? did you SEE ROSSI'S FACE WHEN HE SEES STEPHEN AGAIN??? DID YOU SEE HIM ALMOST CRYING IN THE CAR WITH REID? BECAUSE HE WAS SO CLOSE!)

rossi had convinced himself he was okay with whatever feelings he still had left lingering for gideon as they drifted apart during his retirement, platonic or otherwise. either way, they were close close ! you can't deny that. gideon literally named his son after rossi 😭.

and then gideon died.

and, nearly immediately? rossi questions if gideon ever truly cared for him, as much as he cared for gideon.

"you know, back then, i would've bet my life we'd always be close...... but maybe we never were. maybe, after all these years, i just... rewrote our history."

(<3 kirstin vangsness killing me, as usual. i love when she writes so much. that is such a raw line dude)

back to my main point :

even WITH these feelings, these awful feelings of doubt? in the end of "nelson's sparrow", he KILLS to avenge gideon!

he could say he killed mallick in self defense. he could say he killed mallick because he was just outraged at the torture he'd put those poor girls through.

... but that wouldn't be true!

not completely, anyway.

he killed mallick because of that picture gideon kept in his wallet.

he killed mallick because of the years and years of torment this monster put gideon through.

he killed mallick because maybe, just MAYBE, killing him would make the loss easier. (it didn't.)

rossi SAYS he doesn't see the unsubs they face as monsters anymore- they're just humans who made bad choices. killers, but not monsters. he compares it to underestimating an opponent on the battlefield.

... but that sentiment doesn't apply when they hurt his family. they're "cowards", "bastards", ANY name he can throw at them.

blah blah blah yes i know that the entire team knew gideon very well, i know that they all definitely help with the funeral (which. the proceedings of gideons funeral is something i never thought id be contemplating deeply at 9 oclock on a saturday, but here we are).

... but God. rossi, hotch, and reid knew him the best. rossi more than ANY of them! they had to be the main 3 that took charge. obviously including stephan, too, which.. *slams my head into a wall* yeah! im normal about that

it's just... how many times did the team quietly bring up a question about "what gideon would've wanted" and turn their heads toward rossi for an answer, who has just been staring at the obituary, that HE himself wrote, completely dissociated from the conversation?... after all- he has the best handwriting out of all of them. (he's holding the pen a little too tight. his fancy cursive shakes and the ink bleeds into the page.)

how many times has rossi been a pallbearer...? we all know reid probably couldn't even speak at gideon's funeral, and i personally know that hotch probably said something there, but. Christ. rossi had to have spoken, too. how many times has he spoken at a funeral?. how hard was it, this time, to write down all his thoughts? (the hardest it's ever been, for a man that is a well-renowned author.)

did they have any recent photos of him, lying around the house? did they have to use an old one? where was he buried?

how many graves does rossi visit now?

1. THE KISS. THE KISS?! OH MY GOD??!!!
