Se especula que el número 666 proviene del nombre de Nerón. En su época, en la parte oriental del Imperio Romano se acuñaban monedas con las palabras en escritura hebrea de las palabras griegas Neron Kaisar (Emperador Nerón) — "נרון קסר".

Si no consideramos las letras en sí, sino sus valores numéricos, su suma es 666. A favor de esto, un fragmento de un verso encontrado en el sitio de Oxirrinco afirma que el número del diablo es 616 (en la escritura griega "χιϛ").

Si tomamos como base la ortografía de Nerón César, la suma de los valores numéricos se reduce en 50 y es igual a 616, es decir, Ireneo tomó una ortografía errónea.
