Sea Witchery - Tumblr Posts
This is so beautiful
my DIY seaglass rune set đđđ
I've referenced this post before in my own practices, way back before I had a Tumblr account. Now that I'm here, let me reblog it so I don't lose track of it!
đťđSkyeâs Landlocked Sea Witch Tipsđđť
Iâve seen a lot of aspiring sea witches being discouraged due to not living anywhere near the ocean. And Iâm here to tell you that you can still be a sea witch and be landlocked! Being landlocked will only hinder you if you let it.
So, letâs get going!
đMaking Your Own Sea Waterđ
You will need:
đA jar/air tight bottle. I find a swing cap bottle works best
đSea salt, eyeball amount depending on jar size
đWarm spring water
Ground and centre. Listen to ocean sounds and visualise and feel the power of the sea. Connect with the ocean by doing a Sinking/sea centering.
Pour the water into the jar. Add the sea salt. Mix until the salt has dissolved.
Hold the jar in both hands in front of your heart, saying:
âđ Mother ocean, from whom life flows, Bless this water with your love and nurturing power, your endless beauty and strength, For this I am grateful. So mote it be đâ
(Feel free to replace mother ocean with the name of your sea deity, if you have one)
Close your eyes. Continue to hold the jar at your heart and visualise the ocean. With your hands, feel the seaâs energy emanating from the jar. When the feeling is strong, open your eyes. Your sea water is ready to use.
đđSea Sound Scapesđđ
Your sea water can be placed in a bowl and you have the ocean right there. Combine that with the sound scape, listening to the waves coming in and going out. Synch that with any spell work you want to do regarding waves, tides, giving things to mother ocean etc. With me, I place things in the bowl and then pour the water and item (if itâs eco friendly) in the stream near my house.
I also use this technique to place myself at the beach through the senses. Hold a seashell or touch some sand, taste some salt, listen to ocean sounds, have an image or video of the sea, and if you can (I struggle with this) have a scent thatâs ocean themed. Iâve struggled to find one as most scented candles labelled sea breeze smell like soap⌠And with this, you can perform rituals and workings centered around that water you made. Through your visualisation skills you can be by the sea, even when you physically arenât. Cool, huh?!
đYou Are Oceanđ
The ocean is within you. Itâs your blood, the sweat, your tears, your breath, your pulse. The ocean has a rhythm, so does the human body. Weâre 65% water. And whatâs even cooler is we also have a tide. The moon affects the bodyâs fluids, just like it affects the ocean. These ideas have really helped me with my craft because being landlocked, Iâm sometimes like âhow can I connect with the sea?â So knowing I have a tide and the rhythm of the sea, which is like the rhythm of pulse, just totally blows my mind and amazes me!
đ§đŚInland WaterđŚđ§
Now this is something that kinda quenches my sea thirst. If you can, travel to a nearby lake, river, stream etc. Sit near it. Connect with it. Follow your intuition and connect with its energy. Ask Mother Ocean/Your water deity to help you.
Honestly, Iâve been in meditation near freshwater and the smell, if I focus enough, reminds me of the sea air and it literally transports me in my mind and senses to the beach. And thatâs one of my vital tools in my craft. (talk about water being adaptable and water witches doing the same, eh?!)
đđżBath & Shower Magicđżđ
đBath bombs. Look up their ingredients to know the correspondences, or, just make up your own. Lush are honestly amazing and their products have been used a lot in my bath rituals
đSallllttssss! You can make a saltwater bath, meditate and relax and really tap into that ocean energy
đBath tub altar. Have a little altar going on when you take a bath. Shells, candles, incense, trinkets youâve collected or purchased, statues. Anything you have that makes you feel connected with the sea
đ You can use crystals that correspond to water if you like. Aquamarine, moonstone, fluorite, amethyst, labradorite, selenite and rose quartz are just a few examples. If youâre putting crystals in your tub please research which ones are water safe!
đHerbs and oils. You can add these to your bathtub. Please research again. Some herbs are toxic and some you may be allergic to. The same with oils, as some people have allergic reactions to them! I donât often use herbs and oils for this reason. I get irritated skin very easily. I use coconut oil in my bath for purification and I just looooove coconut oil and the scent. Also its amazing for your skin! I use lavender oil and thatâs literally it. I use oils outside of the tub, though. For candle dressing and other spell work.
đAnd if you donât have a bathtub, all of those above ingredients and can be made into shower scrubs! Theyâre super easy to make and thereâs a tonne of amazing tutorials around online!
đMeditate or work in the shower. Feel that water flowing down and through you, allow it to cleanse and charge you. Go with your intuition and explore the possibilities
đŠđŞď¸âď¸Weatherâď¸đŞď¸đŠď¸
Weather. It all begins at sea. Snow, rain, thunder storms, winds, hail. Its all from the sea. The water is ocean water thatâs traveled to the land. Weather magic is just a more expanded form of sea magic. Go out and let the rain cleanse you, collect weather water of any kind and make your sea water with it! Feel the power of a storm and focus on how much energy the sea has during that time. Feel her with you when you are on land! Remember to stay safe when practising weather magic, too.
đâ¨Seashell Magicâ¨đ
And if you have seashells, they have amazing uses and correspondences. Offering bowls, amulets, charms, talismans, runes, charging items and so on. I highly recommend the book Sea Magic by Sandra Kynes as a lot of the tips Iâve given you were inspired or taken from that book :)
A quick PSA regarding seashells:
If your shells are store bought, they may not be ethically sourced. Some craft stores sell them by the many so try to be wary of this. Itâs down to your moral compass whether or not you decide to use them in your craft. And if you do choose to use them, I advise cleansing them before any magical use. Furthermore, do not purchase nautilus shells, starfish or seahorses. Nautilus shells are endangered. Star fish and sea horses are taken alive, then killed to be sold in stores.
I really hope this helped! Have a swishy day! đđAnd if you have any questions, feel free to ask :)
Sea Witchcraft: "Sinking"
What I refer to as âsinkingâ is another form of grounding and something that I think every sea witch (or any kind of witch) should try.
In the typical grounding practice, one takes time to calm the mind and align your energy with that of the Earth, in sinking you are instead aligning your energy with the ocean. This is good to try before any spell, especially if you want it to pack a bit of a punch.
Now, a few notes that I feel should be taken here;
The ocean is a strong, untamed force of nature. Respect that.
You do not take from itsâ power, you simply borrow it.
Alright, now that being said, sinking is very powerful. The first time I tried it I was overwhelmed and had to take a tiny break just because the sensation is a lot stronger than any Iâve ever gotten while grounding. But thatâs just me. Anyhow, here we go!
How To Go About Sinking
Things youâll need:
Water. (Sea water if you can but if not, any other kind save for tap is fine.)
Sea Salt
A sea shell
A candle that reminds you of the ocean.
A picture or video of the ocean
The sound of waves, seagulls etc (easily accessible on Youtube.)
Make sure that youâre somewhere that you canât be disturbed. Turn your video on or place your picture in front of you and play the ocean sounds. Light your candle as well. Just listen, take it all in for a few minutes. Imagine that youâre actually there, try to picture the way the sand feels against your skin. Once you begin to truly feel the sand and all of that, grab your shell and hold it in your hand. Take all of this in and until you can feel yourself actually by the shore.
Take a pinch of your sea salt and taste it (Do not drink or even sip your sea water! Itâll make you sick!) Tell yourself that the salt in the sea and the salt you have just eaten are one and that the waves that splash against the shore are also in your blood and that the very sea itself rages in your veins.
When you are ready, take your sea water and drip it on your wrists, feet, wherever you would like and feel the water. What I like to do is imagine myself sinking but not struggling for breath, feeling the water, the energy around me and allowing my body to be a receptor of that energy. It moves through you and strengthens you.
Now as Iâve said, this is simply how I do it and what works for me but yeah, there you have it!
Crab 'Alarm' Protection Charm
Note: This is one of my personal sea spells and it is probably going to be the only one Iâm ever going to share.
I have a shit ton of wards and protection charms up because Iâm a paranoid mother fucker and this is also one of my favorites. Especially since I like crabs a lot, I donât know why theyâre just kind of adorable. Anyhow..
What Youâll Need
A crab claw collected from the shore
A mortal and pestle (or something that you can crush things with)
A knife or clothes pin
Sea water
A spray bottle (optional)
1. There a few personal things I like to do with the shells and skeletons of dead creatures but those are optional and I donât think Iâm going to list them here. But youâre going to want to cleanse the crab claw before hand.
2. Grind the claw into a fine dust or how ever much you feel like grinding it up.
3. Mix in a tiny bit of sea water
âAs this creature protected itself against predators of the deep with its pinch may it protect this space and alert me with its sting when malicious and unwanted spirits are near.â
4. Take your knife/pin or whatever you have and prick your finger.Â
âMay its pinch always alert me of these dangerous entities and energies.â
5. Prick your finger again and this time try to draw blood. Let a few drops mix in with the sea water and crab. Imagine that this is what you will feel each time a negative spirit or entity is near.
6. Focus. Like really focus on feeling this and training your body to feel this. It could take a while.
7. If you want, put this all in a spray bottle and spray it around the space you want to protect. Or simply sprinkle it.

Simple Beach Magic 2
Make poppets out of sand! You could build a sandcastle around them for a protection spell, finish making the poppet then stepping on it for a quick curse
Find a shell to represent someone/something then throw it as far as you can back into the ocean for a quick banishing
Use seaweed for a quick knot spell and bury it at the beach
I went to the beach for the first time ever (squeal) and I wanted to leave an offering of thanks to the ocean because I'd planned on taking a few shells. I didn't have anything physical to leave though, other than 2 sigils in the sand. Is that okay?
Absolutely.
I defiantly want to encourage that our dedication and gratitude towards the Ocean doesnât have to just take place while at the beach, it can take place through out our lives daily. Simple gestures like donationing to organizations that help Ocean life, or spreading awareness, or second guessing the cleaning products we use and switching to more eco-friendly products, or just picking up garbage whether itâs found on the beach or not, can help immensely.
Leaving sigils in the sand can be a better offering than any physical thing since youâre not using, and possibly littering, anything at the beach.
And as long as you collected seashells respectively, as in you only took a few and didnât take anything that still belonged to or helped a creature in some way, then youâre fine. And if you ever find yourself with too many seashells that havenât been used in a while, then feel free to return them to the beach.
If you want to offer more to the Ocean from time-to-time, take the seashells youâve collected, project your energy into them and send it out to the beach youâve visited.
What Iâm say is thereâs always something we can do for the Ocean.
Iâm glad you got to visit the Ocean and left a gift.

A Sea Witchâs Guide to Seashells
A handy guide to properly cleaning shells, when and how to collect them, and a few creative ideas for using them in witchy matters or altar decoration!Â
By rainy-day-witchcraft
Cleaning
Seashells, whether inhabited by an organism or abandoned on the beach, almost always have that funky sea smell~ which can only grow as they are dried and left out. When cleaning shells, there are many different techniques. You can:
Boil ~ gently drop your shells into a stove-top pot and turn up the heat until the water reaches a boil. After a few minutes, turn it down to about half that heat, and let them simmer for 20-30 minutes. Tips: Shells must be dropped into the water while it is still lukewarm, so they gradually heat and do not break or crack from the cool to hot transfer / Take caution not to let the pot boil over, as the water is salty and will leave a residue that will need to be cleaned afterwardsÂ
Bleach~ Soak your shells in a 50/50 water/bleach ratio for an hour or so. There is no set time, but be careful not to leave them in for too long, as the bleach will break them down!
Baking Soda scrub~ Mixing a paste-like mixture of water and baking soda, take an old toothbrush and scrub the shell for a few minutes. If you are dealing with a sanddoller, be sure to scrub more gently and in small circular motions
Burying~ Because barnacles, tiny organisms, or bits of the previous shell-owner can be left in hard-to-reach areas of the shell, burying a shell 18 inches into the ground for a few weeks is a useful technique to get rid of any stink-inducing sea thing. Because it is buried at this depth, it allows insects, larva, and ants to eat the remains of organism and leave the shell with no reason to smell after cleaning! If using this technique, bury it opening-down; it works especially well to preserve glossy shells, as most of the other methods may cause de-shining
If you are more of a pro-collector, consider using:
Muriatic acid~ dipping a shell in this chemical can majorly restore color and finish. However, on OLIVE shells (seashells that already have a shiny finish) this will do the opposite, and dull them
Shell Collecting
The best times to collect shells are during the New Moon and Full Moon, when the tide is at itâs most powerful. Beginning your collecting an hour before and after low tide is also a key time when seashells end up on the sand! While searching near the wet sand usually yields fresher shells, make sure you also do a little digging or check near the high-tide line.
The DONâTâs
Fragile shells, such as sand dollar, can crumble if cleaned too harshly or left in the sun
Do not clean with any type of vinegar! Vinegar can erode calcium, which is a main component in almost all shells
If you find two shells sealed tightly together, or anything that resembles a live clam or shellfish, do not collect these! There is an organism living inside, and it is illegal at many beaches to collect living seashells. Do the little guy a favor (and the environment) and throw it back into the ocean or leave it be ~Â
If any trace of sea creature is left inside or outside the shell, it will mostly never loose the fishy smell
Putting Shells to (Magickal) Use
In addition to looking nice or being cleaned/polished and made into decoration, they can also be used as:
Offering bowls
Talismans or Amulets
Representation of ocean or sea related gods/goddesses
Various magickal utensils (Magickal tools adorned with seashells, decorated on bowls or cups, hung as ornaments or charms, etc.)
In magick and witchcraft, they represent and are useful in:
The element of Water/West direction
Rounder, whiter shells can represent the moon, because of itâs influence on the ocean tides
Spells for emotion (water=emotion) protection (A shell is the protective covering for an ocean organism) creativity (water also=creative spirit), love (In reference to Aphrodite), and prosperity (Used as currencies around the world long ago)Â
Particular shells also have their own meaning, such as these~
Abalone - general use and containment of empowered herbs and stones
Clam shells - purification and love
Conche shell - love
Cone shell - protection
Cowrie shell - prosperity, money - if you look at a cowrie shell is also looks very âfeminineâ)
Whelks - dramatic positive change
Limpets - courage, confidence, strength
Scallops - travel, movement
Sand~doller- prosperity, good luck

Voice Theft Curse (Disney Inspired)
A curse to stop someone who has been spewing hateful speech and words and return that negativity they put out back into their life.
You Will Need:
Sea Shell (preferably a clam shell)
Paper
Black Marker or Pen
Black Candles
Taglock (if you can manage)
Pencil
Sea Water (sea salt in water will suffice if needed)
Steps:
On your small slip of paper write down your targetâs name in pencil.
With your black marker write in large letters covering the name âSHUT UP!â
Crumple up the paper between your fingers, rolling it and squashing it. Put all of your frustration and anger into this action.
Place the crumpled piece of paper into your sea shell. To release more negativity and return it to the target spit onto the shell and paper. If you have a taglock place it in the shell as well.
Place your candle onto of the sea shell and light it, let it burn down and cover the shell and paper in wax
Once it is sufficiently covered take your sea water and pour it over the candle drenching it and the shell. Take the shell and bury it in the ground or into a planter. If you cannot do this then store it somewhere dark.
cleanse your space and yourself afterwards and rest.
Animals in Sea Witchcraft
Hi everyone! I had a lot of questions about animals in sea witchcraft and what they represent so I thought Iâd make a list <3Â Because the sea is home to many animals and plants of different shapes, sizes, and species, animals in sea witchcraft is important and can make your craft more versatile.Â
Before I list all the animals and what they can do for your craft, I want to talk about first how you can implicate characteristics of the animals. You can use the sound they make during rituals or spell casting to incorporate their characteristics or make your spell/ritual stronger. You can use a picture or statue of them to incorporate in rituals, or carry a statue or picture of the animal to give yourself their characteristics. You can put the picture or statue under your pillow (if the statue is small enough and youâre okay with it) to bring you dreams that pertain to their characteristics.Â
Sea turtles These are very old creatures, so they carry with them the characteristic of wisdom and patience, and because of their shells, they also carry the characteristic of protection and strength. They can also represent home, and carrying home with you wherever you go- a characteristic of being rooted. In Hawaii, they represent good luck. Uses: Use for good test scores or quality work, rooting for yourself or others, insight, and anxiety.
Dolphins Dolphins are very fun and intelligent creatures, carrying with them the characteristics of intelligence, charisma, playfulness, open-mindedness, helpfulness, community, love, and companionship. They are one of the more versatile of ocean animal totems, because they can represent so much. Depending on your intent for using the dolphin in your craft, the characteristic will come out into your work. Some other characteristics might also come out to help make your work even more versatile. Uses: pretty much anything honestly. Mainly used for companionship, such as strengthening bonds that might be strained or broken.Â
Manatees Manatees are an underrated animal in witchcraft. Manatees have the characteristics of relaxation, flexibility, open-mindedness, patience, and self acceptance. In our world today, we have no time to slow down and relax or take 5 minutes to reflect on ourselves. When stressed out or stuck in a tight situation, try incorporating the manateeâs energy into your work. The energy of manatees will slow you down and give you the relaxation and open-mindedness you need to reflect and will give you the self acceptance you need. I highly suggest using this animal in your craft. Uses: Stress relief for yourself or others, depression, anxiety
Whales There are many different kinds of whales, all with different characteristics. As I donât what this post to be too long, I plan to go into all the different species in a different post, but for now I will share what characteristics are generally attributed to whales. Whales carry the characteristics of power and creativity, as well as friendship/friendliness, and emotion / self discovery and awareness. Because of their size, their power shines through. The unique and individual songs whales sing represent their creativity. Whales represent friendship and friendliness, as well as some undertones of patience. Whales can reach deep depths of the ocean, representing ourselves reaching deep into our minds and emotions and bring about self understanding, discovery, and awareness. The whale can help us understand our emotions and who we are. Uses: Good for when you or someone you know feels weak or helpless, good for calming after someone or yourself has done something against you or someone else, as it helps to calm and understand. Rays Rays are a popular creature at many aquariums and during many sea life tours. There are multiple species, like the string ray, manta ray, butterfly ray, etc. Just like with the whales, Iâll probably go into them into another post but say the general characteristics. Rays represent fluidity, grace, flexibility, protection, and camouflage/blending in. Rays move with grace, carrying a go-with-the-flow and fluidity and flexibility characteristic. Because they are called âthe birds of the sea,â they also carry a characteristic of freedom and flight. Use rays in your work when you want to let go of something that might be causing you stress and bring your mind to a place of go-with-the-flow, as well as getting out of the situation gracefully and protected. Rays also help with blending in to surroundings, and can be helpful especially helpful for people with anxiety.  Uses: Anxiety, procrastination, stress
Jellyfish Jellyfish are known for being dangerous because of their stingers, but they can teach us important lessons. Jellyfish carry the characteristics of harmony, balance, responsibility, and learning from our mistakes. They can also represent self love. Jellyfish represent harmony and balance, being in harmony with the environment around them and being balanced. They represent being cautious and being responsible, looking around for danger before stepping into the water. When we dive in head first into something we havenât taken the time to reflect on, we can get stung, so jellyfish represent learning from our mistakes. They can also have an undertone of self love, as once put in danger or feeling threatened, the jellyfish will attack and wonât put up with someone walking on them.Â
Uses: Use during divination or prayer before making a big decision, or use the jellyfish for reflection after a mistake you made to help you learn from it and get out of the mistake a changed person. Otter Otters are incredibly friendly and cute animals, and are a famous attraction at zoos. Otters are more of the smaller marine creatures, and can represent being one fish in a whole ocean full of them. Otters carry the characteristics of usefulness, wit, curiosity, freedom, and relaxation or âwind down time.â Otters are easy going and can help after a stressful day of work or school, or just a stressful day in general. They are extremely witty and can use the resources around them, such as when they use rocks to open shells for food. They represent freedom in that they are happy where they are, and happy as an individual, like being a small part of a huge ocean. Uses: Use the otter when someone you know or yourself has had a stressful day, week, month, year, etc. Use the otter to become more witty and see solutions in the area around you, even when there seems like there is no solution. Seal Seals are another popular sea creature, and represent open-mindedness in seeing two sides of a story and seeing different view points. They represent difficulties that will come to you and the balance to fight against or go with the difficulties. Seals can see above and below water, two entirely different worlds, so the seal can help you see two entirely different worlds of the same story, or can help someone you know to understand. The two ways of seeing the world also represent two paths that you can take- you can either fight against difficulties that come your way, or just swim along with them and let them pass. If you are having difficulties balancing your life, maybe balancing personal and professional life, the seal can help with this too. Uses: Use the seal whenever there are 2 options and you donât know which one to take, or use it when you want further understanding. Orca / Killer Whale The orca is part of the dolphin family, unlike what the name suggests. Orcas carry the characteristics of understanding, peace, intelligence, community, and quick learning. Orcas are intelligent and are quick learners and can easily learn new tricks, whether these be taught or something they learn themselves. They bring about peace and understanding, as often times people misunderstand orcas. If you feel misunderstood, use the orca. Orcas travel in pods and create their own distinct âlanguageâ within their pods, so they can not only represent community and relationships, but also the orca has a meaning of understanding oneâs language and using oneâs words. Uses: Expressing yourself, especially in the case that someone has misunderstood you and/or your relationship with someone is deteriorating or is broken. Also can be used during studying or reading to learn things quickly and absorb knowledge. Seahorse The seahorse is a popular animal in many aquariums. Seahorses represent uniqueness, love, good luck, rooting/anchoring, and determination. Because of the uniqueness in not only their appearance but also in the way they procreate, seahorses represent uniqueness and can bring out the uniqueness in you. They are monogamous, and sea horse couples rely on each other, which represents the love the seahorses bring about. They are a symbol of good luck. They anchor themselves to plants like grasses and can be helpful with rooting/anchoring. Because these little creatures have small fins, they can easily tire and die from exhaustion, but they keep going, representing determination and endurance. Uses: Use seahorses before working to root yourself and anchor yourself. Use them during spells or other work that takes a long time and determination to accomplish, such as energy or spirit work. You can also use the seahorse to strengthen relationships, especially love. Shark The shark has the characteristics of protection, power, awareness/alertness, understanding, and determination. Sharks are territorial creatures, feeling threatened when something is in its territory and always ready to strike back if something gets too close. They protect their territory, and they have immense power. They are always aware and alert of their surroundings, and are constantly moving forward, representing determination. Like the orca, sharks are often misunderstood, so they carry the same meaning as the orcas. Uses: Use the shark when you feel threatened and want to be more aware and alert and want protection from whatever is making you feel threatened. Use the shark when you want power and determination. The shark is especially good for people with anxiety, and are good for people who are or want to be head strong and confident. Starfish The starfish, or sea star, is a very common attribute of the sea. When we sea pictures of the beach or sea, we will generally sea sea shells or star fish. These beautiful creatures carry the characteristics of aliases and blending in, disguise, balance and harmony, wishes, and flexibility. Sea stars can be called many different names, and hence represent aliases and disguise. This can also translate into them blending in, as well as how they blend in with their surroundings. They can see black, white, and gray, and represent a balance and harmony, like yin-yang. There will always be a little black in the white and there will always be a little white in the black, and nothing is set in stone or perfectly outlined. Because of their star shape, they represent wishes and prayer, and can be helpful during these actions.Â
Uses: Use the starfish for making decisions and during prayer or when making wishes. This can also be in spell casting or potion making to heighten the potency of the spell/potion. Use the starfish for blending in and going by unnoticed.Â
That will be all for now, but if there are any animals you want to know the attributes of or want to know what attributes go to a certain animal, please message me and Iâd be happy to help! Overall you can use these animals in any way, whether you use their energy for spirit work, energy work, potion making, spell casting, rituals, worship, prayers, divination, dreaming, etc. Keep in mind that you need to have an intent that you want the animal to bring out, and be open minded to having other effects resulting from the use of the animal as well. The sea represents harmony, balance, self love, self acceptance, self discovery, self awareness, emotion, power, beauty, and so much more, so the use of pretty much any sea animal will also carry the attributes of the sea. It mainly depends on your intent for using the animal. I hope this helps with your craft and hopefully it helps all of you every day, whether you have a good or bad day. Thanks for reading!
