Snippet #1

TW: light description of injuries

Snippet #1

“I’m not as bad as the others say, you know.” Villain tried.

“Quiet, Villan.” Hero’s Sidekick barked.

“Ooh, so scary. Truly, I’m shaking in my boots.” Villain’s Sidekick scoffed.

The cuffs rattling was the only other sound as the group made their way through the hospital wing.

“If you just talk to Hero-“

Hero’s Sidekick cut Villan’s plea off. “I’ll do what I want, thank you.” Villain sighed. There really was no way to get anything through their thick skull. Just like Hero warned.

Hero’s Sidekick opened a door at the end of the hall, shoving Villain through before entering themselves. “Thank you, Hero’s Sidekick. You can take Villain’s Sidekick to the medbay and check over their wounds.”

Out of the corner of their eye Villan saw their sidekick and Hero’s Sidekick back out of the room. Villain wasn’t for sure, but they could’ve sworn they heard one of the sidekicks whispering. Something about going somewhere private.

“I figured they could use some time alone.” The Hero clarified after the door closed. They stood, crossing the room to get a proper look at Villain. The Villain felt hands— ever so lightly— brush against theirs, the handcuffs clattering on the floor a heartbeat later. Villain didn’t dare look up.

“Look at me.”

Villain wrapped their arms around Hero instead.

“Hey,” The hero lifted the villan’s chin. Shallow cuts, split lip. A black eye. Tears rolling down their face. “Look at me.”

Their eyes met.

“Tell me who did this to you.”

“You know what I think?” Hero’s sidekick asked.

“You think?” Villan’s Sidekick laughed.

The other scoffed and tossed a piece of candy at their foe, grinning when it hit them in the face. “Yes. Now listen. I think I have a plan to get Hero and Villan together.”

“Ooh, do tell. But it had better involve something illegal.”

Hero’s Sidekick smile widened. “How do you feel about getting kidnapped by Vigilante?”

“By who?” Vigilante’s head peaked around a corner. “Why would I be kidnapping them?”

“You’re kidnapping both of us. And it’s to get Hero and Villain together.” Hero glanced between Vigilante and the hideout decorations. “We can stay here, they don’t know where your base is.”

“That is both a terrible and incredibly stupid idea. But I’m down to getting those two together. Let’s do it and see what happens.”

The next morning, the three of them made the 6 o’clock news.

Snippet #3.01

TW: needle, asphyxiation, implied kidnapping

Snippet #3.01

“Not many get to see the my face and live,” a voice behind Hero hissed. A sharp object pressed against their neck.

Their brain regestered the thing too late. A needle. Before they had a chance to protest, the contents were injected and needle removed.

Villain circled to their front, studying. “You won’t remember what I look like. How maddening that will be for you. So close, yet, never close enough.”

Hero’s eyes were wide, their hand at the base of their neck.

“What was in that?” The hero rasped. Their breath was coming up shorter by the second.

The villain’s brow wrinkled in confusion. “It was chloroform, w-“ The hero’s breaths were gasps, Villain noticed. Something was wrong. Terribly wrong. Before they could ask, however, the hero collapsed. The villain caught them, by some miracle.

The hero was still conscious, which was somewhat of a good sign, Villan noted as they lowered Hero to the ground. Villain checked for a pulse whilst Hero tried to fight them off. It registered in the villan’s mind why they were panicking.

Hero wasn’t breathing. They must of had a reaction to something. They needed a hospital, not to run away!

Villain had froze, allowing Hero the time to get away for just a moment before Villain grabbed for their wrist again. Hero made it a few paces away before grabbing ahold of their boot and ripping it off. They fished out one of the items stored inside the heel. An epipen. They opened the case just as their world went dark.

When the hero awoke, they knew they weren’t in the hospital.

Snippet #4.01

TW: description of wounds, use of medical equipment

Snippet #4.01

“As fascinated as I am watching you work with this kind of expertise, I am curious as to how you know to stich someone up so professionally. Do you work for Hero, or Superhero perhaps?”

’Twas but an awkward situation, that one. Supervillain had been in the process of fleeing leaving a fight downtown between a few of the city’s biggest and brightest supers on both sides. When they had taken to the air, they didn’t realize how bad their injuries had been. Their vision turned black within moments- and miraculously -Supervillain crash landed on a balcony instead of plummeting to their untimely demise. When they came to hours later, they had been brought indoors and set on a couch, apparently owned by this civilian.

The supervillain had been surprised. This person had an opportunity to do anything. Call the cops, flag down a hero, even unmask them. But they hadn’t. And since Supervillain considered themself as a slow-to-destruction kind of person, the civilian wouldn’t be killed on sight.

Then Supervillain noticed their injuries, treated and either bandaged or stitched, save one rather nasty gash over their ribs.

And it was only after that did they noticed the civilian crouched on the floor. Frozen in place, holding a string-like fiber and a hooked needle in their clutches. This civilian was not normal, that was for certain.

Said civilian, now, shrugged and continued their work. “I don’t work for any super in this city. Maybe once however, I was a super living in a different city. It would have been years ago, obviously. I would have learned how to use sutures to patch myself up because it was the only way I could survive, because there was no one I could go to for help,” They paused to look them in the eye.

Or maybe,” They tugged the thread a little too harshly, getting a hiss out of the supervillain. “I’m a paramedic who does this kind of procedure nearly every day, because ya’know, it’s my job.” They tied the last knot and set the hook-like needle down.

“Speaking of going to some one for help, stitches should come out in two weeks. I assume one of your villain friends can help you with that?” The civilian helped Supervillain to their feet before leaving them in favor of cleaning their equipment.

Supervillain didn’t acknowledge them as they made their way to the balcony, testing their flight abilities and then leaping off the fourteen-story balcony ledge. Today must’ve been their lucky day.

Snippet #3.02

First part here!

TW: description of wounds, needle, held down, explosion

Snippet #3.02

All they knew for certain was their leg was in pain. No, that wasn’t the right word. Burning, aching… throbbing? Yeah, those were better descriptions. All three fit the agonizing feeling that made Hero want to scream.

They knew the walls were a dark green, the cabinets were a shiny silver color. The hero tried to focus on the things around them. It’d keep them from full blown panic.

They swallowed— though their throat was sandpaper —when they noticed a cut about mid-thigh too clean to be accident, right where the searing seemed to originate from.

Upon closer inspection it almost looked like someone slashed their suit then stabbed them. But there wasn’t blood anywhere? Just a blackish-blue bruise the size of a fist?

Hey, wait a minute, that was the same mark an epipen would leave. Wait a minute, did an epipen do that? Did their epipen do that?

It was at that moment the door swung open. The hero froze as two people walked in. Lab coats, one in a turtleneck, the other in a set of off-blue colored scrubs.

They immediately categorized them as civilians, medical workers. The two kept their heads buried in their tablets, effectively not noticing the hero’s awakened state. That was until one of them pulled out a needle and reached for the IV.

The only way Hero could describe what happened when they grabbed the medic’s arm as pure chaos. The medic shrieked, scaring the other nurse who in turn tossed their tablet. The scream apparently alerted others, and now there were more people flooding through the door.

The command for someone to hold Hero down came from the first nurse, and moments later their arms, legs, and shoulders were pinned down. They couldn’t get up. They couldn’t fight them. No, nononono.

“Getoffgetoffgetoff. Get off me!”

“Let them alone,” A new voice rang, calm, but yet still commanding. It was enough that the nurses backed off, thank goodness.

“Its morphine, if that’s what you were so dearly frightened about. You were afraid of it being poison?”

Did they just-? How did they know that?

“Or was it something else entirely … You’ve been quite on edge, even before the doctors arrived…” Oh, they’re a mind reader. Great, just what Hero needed.

“Now now, that’s no way to greet your savior,”

Who is this, who do they think they are?

“You’ll call me a concerned party. If I may ask, do you remember what happened that landed you here?”

Hero couldn’t seem to remember anything. The last thing they could remember was sprinting across rooftop after rooftops towards a bank vault heist in progress. They could see a figure in the distance, but Hero was too far away yet to see who. Was it Supervillain or Thief, perhaps?

No, it was someone they’d never seen before. Hero made note of the stormy grey body suit, a deep green glow illuminating from lines carved into their suit. They couldn’t tell for certain, but it looked like the suit was the expensive stuff— fireproof, bulletproof, the works.

Whoever this was, they had deep connections. And money. Lots of money.

Hero made their presence known as they approached. The figure swiveled, eyes wide. They took a step back. And another. Then they were running into the bank? Despite the questionable action, Hero gave chase.

When the person took a left turn down a corridor, Hero didn’t expect them to come barreling back at an inhuman speed. Hero crashed into the figure, falling face first to the ground. They looked up.

Oh, so that’s why they were running like they saw a demon. That’s a bomb.

Well, it was close enough to a demon.

The last thing they could remember was running. The other person was nowhere in sight, so they must have already made it out, right?

“Hey.” Someone shook Hero’s shoulder, effectively bringing them back to reality. But what about the epipen bruise? They couldn’t explain where the mark came from.

Their savior chuckled. “I’ll let you alone for a moment. There’s someone waiting, they can clarify I do believe.” And without answering Hero’s question, they left.

The next person to enter the room sent Hero’s heart in a frenzy.

“I’m told you recognized me,” They held out a hand to shake. It was them. They were alive! “I’m Villain. And I believe we have a few things to discuss.”

Snippet #5

TW: attempted murder

Snippet #5

“So this… this is the Chosen One?” The figure laughed to themselves as they looked down upon the squirming bundle of joy in the crib.

“You’re the one who everyone thinks is going to stop me one day, aren’t you? Aren’t you?” The villain cooed playfully, sending the baby into a fit of chortles. “Well, guess what? Guess what? It’s not going to happen!” The villain’s finger wiggled in the baby’s face, receiving a toothless grin in return. They unsheathed their dagger.

But before they could do anything, the hallway light flipped on. Footsteps… Multiple sets. People were coming. And then the villain was back out the window and long gone, before the baby’s bedroom door ever opened. They vowed to be back. But don’t worry…

Promises are broken all the time.

Snippet #6

Tw: violence, blood, self sacrifice, threats

Snippet #6

She saw it coming. Just a blur of movement, shadows rushing closer. No time to think.

“Run!” She shoved the student away from the window and her world exploded. Screams filled her senses as debris rained, the force of collision knocking her off her feet.

She was losing the fight with consciousness. Fast. The last thing she saw, a figure standing up from the rubble. And the kids weren’t running, they’d hurt them.

No! Don’t hurt her students! Not them. Anyone but them…

~~

No, anyone but Teacher!

She shoved them out of the way, sacrificed her safety for theirs. She was their rock, always there for them, especially when their parents—

Focus. Focus. Their teacher is unconscious. That gash on her forehead is still bleeding. And a quick glance around the room showed Hero there was a passed out student on the floor, too.

Perfect. Just perfect.

“You four, take your friend and get out of here. Pull the fire alarm when you go, it’ll clear everyone else out. {Sidekick}, use the confusion to get gauze and bandages from the nurse’s office.” Their classmates stared, eyes wide, terrified.

“Behind you…”

Hero turned.

Villain was getting up.

Bad. Badbadbadbadbad. Another kid from their class was suddenly in front of Hero, their stance protective, ready for a fight. Wait, what were they- Oh.

Hero nodded to them, turned around and stepped away. “Go.” The command rumbled through their throat, demanding an objection.

“And pull the fire alarm!” Other Hero called after the swarm of students rushing out of the door. Probability any of them will return? 0%,” Other Hero cracked their knuckles as Villain regained their balance. “But the probability Villain gets their butt handed to them? 100%.”

Other Hero’s eyes landed on another classmate still in the room. “Sidekick, go get Hero.”

“No need,” Hero piped. They never imagined their identity would be exposed like this, but oh well. “Sidekick, I need you to get the bandages.”

“You’re- oh, we are going to have words.”

“Later.” The fire alarm screeched. “Sidekick, go!” Hero turned their attention back to Villain, only to see them being thrown through the nearest wall. Other Hero rushed past, towards their teacher, pulling debris and rubble away in their wake.

Hero dropped into a fighting stance beside the other kid as Villain charged.Hero blocked Villain’s punch and swung their leg out, catching them in the back of the knee. The villain tried to get back to their feet, but they were held down by their classmate.

“What did I tell you would happen if you came after them?” They spoke slowly, their voice a mix of chastisement and barely contained rage. “Go ahead, remind me what I said to you.” Hero was about to intervene but their sidekick called their attention to their teacher and the messy bandages. Teacher was covered in so many cuts, so many wounds. Mostly small ones, but there were a few larger gashes still oozing blood. They needed a hospital. But for now, the bandages would have to work.

Hero stood once they finished, carefully taking Teacher in their arms. They took a look around to survey the damage, their eyes catching on the student holding the unconscious villain by the back of their suit. Wrath swirled in their dark eyes. “I’m taking this one. Don’t try to stop me.” Their voice held a sinister promise. Hero nodded and moved to let them pass. They should have tried to stop them, Hero didn’t know what would happen to the villain, but they couldn’t bring themselves to stop them.

“Wait, you’re just going to let them take Villain?” Hero turned to the source of the voice, Other Hero. “What about arresting them? Isn’t that our job?”

“Villain hurt our teacher. They’re going with me.”

“Seriously, just who do you think you are? I mean obviously you’re a super, but there’s no way we’re letting you take Villain, he belongs in our custody.” Sidekick pointed an accused look their way.

“Sidekick don’t-“

The teen laughed and began to levitate. “Me? You know me as Supervillain. Now get Teacher to safety. I’m going to make sure this villain regrets his decision.”

Villain was never heard from nor seen again.

Snippet #7

Tw: none

Snippet #7

“Is something the matter? You normally don’t like to stick around after a heist.”

The person across the rooftop looked up from their trance, focusing of center of attention back on their opponent. “Yeah, fine. Let’s just get this over with.”

Hero dropped their fighting stance in an instant. “Thief, that isn’t like you either. What’s going on?” They stepped a little closer, careful not to invade their personal space, but also careful not to be too far away. They knew the thief would prefer the distance, but they needed to make sure they weren’t too distanced either. They’d bolt the first chance they could get.

“Nothing,” The other bit out. “Nothing at all. Look, just- just stop asking questions, all right? I’ll give you the van Gogh back just-” They trailed off, and Hero found themselves wondering what they were thinking about yet again. It must have been something important.

“I was told to retrieve a Monet, but I’ll take the van Gogh too, if you’re offering.”

“Fine. Take them both. I don’t need them anyway,” The thief slung a long tube from off their back and held it out in front of them. “Give me an hour to retrieve the Monet and come back. You know what? Forget it, I’ll just return the painting myself. I can leave it-” They trailed off, lost in their little world again.

Well, that was concerning. Thief, willing to give up a two paintings, both of which were valued at several thousands, if not millions? Just to get Hero to stop talking? It must be serious. They needed to know what was happening to them. Now.

“Thief,” Hero took two steps forward. “Thief, talk to me, please.” Another step. They were at arm’s reach now. “I can help you, but only if you let me. Let me help you. Please.”

The thief tensed but didn’t bolt, still holding the painting out expectantly. Their eyes shone, screaming worry, fear, but most importantly, trust.

“I’m- I’m not supposed to tell you anything,” They dropped the tube into Hero’s hands and backed away. “But come the museum roof in an hour and I’ll tell you everything.”

Snippet #4.02

Part 1

Tw: use of medical equipment, death mentioned, burns mentioned, car accident mentioned,

(all mentioneds’ are marked as tw.death, tw.burns, ect. ect.)

Snippet #4.02

When the door clicked shut behind Civilain, they all but collapsed into a heap. Their bag slipped from between their fingers and to the ground with a heavy thunk. A breath they didn’t know they’d been holding escaped them as they dragged a hand through their hair. They let the silence stretch around them, as if it could say ‘there is peace in the city, it’s okay, it’s all okay now’. They dropped to a crouch beside the bag they had dropped.

*Cough*

Civilian shot their feet, their eyes darting across the apartment. “Who’s there?” Their eyes landed on a shape at their kitchen table. “Show yourself.” They growled as they groped for something, anything on their belt. Anything they could use as a weapon. The shadow in return, put their hands up in surrender. “Calm yourself. I have no interest in a fight.” Yeah right. Why else would they be here? A thief wouldn’t stick around so whoever this was wanted to be seen. So what did they want?

“I’m only here because the boss wants to talk to you, something about two weeks being up? Said you’d know what that means.”

Two weeks? What did that m- oh. Something close to relief bubbled in Civilian’s chest. Supervillain wanted them. That really shouldn’t have been reassuring, but— hold on, why did they want them?

“I… I told them-“

“Look, I don’t care what your excuse is, you’re going to their base. Grab whatever things you need, you’re coming with me.” The person stood, then crossed the room to stand in front of Civilian. Wow, this henchman-person is short.

“I am not short! I am Supervillain’s right hand, and I am not some lowly henchman.” But okay, they weren’t that short, but then again they only came to Civilian’s shoulder! What were they supposed to say?

“You’re not supposed to say anything. And I am a normal height, I’ll have you know.” They growled before not-so-subtly changing the topic to what supplies Civilian might need and basically dragging them back out of their apartment.

It was a quick ride to Supervillain’s base. At least, from what Civilian could tell with a blindfold on. They’d handed off some of the equipment— a set of tweezers and their trauma shears— to be sterilized, and after had been whisked through corridor after corridor until their guide shoved them towards a door and sped off.

But now here they were, in the presence of Supervillain. Answer the questions thoroughly, answer all of them, the right hand had instructed on the way over. Answer the questions thoroughly, answer a-

“I’ll admit, it took me a minute or two after I left before I realized I wasn’t in pain,” the super swiveled in their chair, now facing the poor civilian. “Care to clarify?” They didn’t hesitate with their answer.

“My jump bag has morphine in it. I took a chance you weren’t allergic to it and administered. I hoped you wouldn’t mind.” The civilian set the bag down and began to fidget with the bagged supplies. “Where and how many stitches, again?”

“You don’t remember?” The supervillain had the audacity to sound surprised.

“I’ve been busy.” Their mind whirred through the scenes, one after another. The flashing sirens and radio calls. The chaos and the screams. The anguish and flat-lines.

“Surely you’d remember stitching up someone in your living room.” The supervillain sounded both smug and incredulous in a way that made Civilian’s blood boil. They didn’t dare look at them, else they might get the urge to throw something at their face.

“Look, in the past few days I’ve been in countless living rooms. I’ve been to three different fire scenes and treated numerous burn victims. I’ve been transport and lifeline for six heart attack victims. I have been to over twenty car accidents and encountered far too many DOAs than I’d care to count.” The images flashed through their mind, one haunting face after another. “So many people, too dead, too soon. So forgive me if I don’t remember the one instance that involved you.”

It was only after that they remembered who they were snapping at.

Their hand flew over their mouth— they didn’t mean to say that! Civilian couldn’t help but look at the supervillain, to survey their reaction or out of pure shock, they couldn’t tell.

The supervillain laughed— they were laughing?! What did that mean? Civilian was going to die weren’t they? And even after their laughter died down until it was nothing more than a sly smirk, Civilian knew there would be trouble for their outburst.

“Two on the left arm and one across the ribs. And the last one is here.” They gestured to a spot just above their hip.

Civilian nodded but didn’t move towards them. Where was Right Hand? Where was their equipment? Surely it had been long enough, right? Between the time they had been separated from Right Hand and now, it had easily been a half hour, probably longer. It didn’t take that long to sterilize equipment. Civilian stared at the door, before glancing back to the supervillain. They grimaced. Supervillain seemed a bit annoyed with having to wait. And they were not known as a patient person.

Civilian had the feeling that if Right Hand took too much longer, Civilian would surely pay for it.

Snippet #8

Snippet #8

“What are you still doing up?” The person in question, Villain, blearily looked up at the hero standing by the bedroom door.

Villain turned back to the notes and documents littered across the floor around them. The case files and photos. The evidence. “I’m working on the case. But what are you doing up, its-“ And they cut themselves short when they looked at the clock. They blinked once. Twice. Three times. There’s no way it was nearly 5 o’clock in the morning.

Villain had been staying at Hero’s base for a good part of the past week. They considered it the safer option when there was a new Supervillain on the loose. And since Villain had received a personal threat from them, they decided to take precautionary measures. To make matters worse, there was little to no evidence against this super… which meant the threat— and the living arrangement— wasn’t stopping anytime soon.

“I… Supervillain is-”

“Most likely asleep right now.” Hero cut. “And if they are awake, they must be half delirious, much like you.”

The poor villain could only give Hero a guilty smile at their statement. Their eyelids drooped closed for a brief moment, before fluttering back open again. All right then, if they left them no choice-

Villain glanced over at the file again as their eyelids fell closed, before flying wide open as a pair of hands slid under their arms. “H-Hero? What are you doing? Let me go!” Their movements were slow and jerky, too weak for the fight they were trying to give.

“Nope. You need to get some sleep.” They laid the flailing villain on the bed and sat down beside them, acting as a barrier between Villain and their work.

“Just… just leave me alone. I was fine how I was.” It was meant to be a growl, but it came out as a half-hearted mutter. A hand began to card through their hair and Villain found themselves melting. Why was it so hard to keep their eyes open all of a sudden?

“I’m not leaving until you get some rest.” The hand continued to play with their hair, even scratching their scalp lightly in places.

“But I’m- *yawn* -I’m not even tired.” The villain whined. Hero almost mentioned how they sounded like a child, but they didn’t want to dissuade Villain from actually trying to sleep. Besides, the criminal was so stinking adorable when they were tired!

Villain looked up at the fond smile of the hero. Their eyes fluttered closed, and when they opened again, hero was lying beside them with villain’s arms wrapped around them.

Villain tried to get their arm out from under them… until the hero shifted and murmured some variation of ‘I don’t think so’ and pulled Villain a little closer. They listened to the silence— only interrupted by the sound of Hero’s breathing— and succumbed to the darkness once again.

Hero smiled again, watching how the other snuggled closer in their sleep. To bother them now would almost be a sin. They took a deep breath and closed their eyes. This villain was too adorable.
