Snippet #6

Tw: violence, blood, self sacrifice, threats

Snippet #6

She saw it coming. Just a blur of movement, shadows rushing closer. No time to think.

“Run!” She shoved the student away from the window and her world exploded. Screams filled her senses as debris rained, the force of collision knocking her off her feet.

She was losing the fight with consciousness. Fast. The last thing she saw, a figure standing up from the rubble. And the kids weren’t running, they’d hurt them.

No! Don’t hurt her students! Not them. Anyone but them…

~~

No, anyone but Teacher!

She shoved them out of the way, sacrificed her safety for theirs. She was their rock, always there for them, especially when their parents—

Focus. Focus. Their teacher is unconscious. That gash on her forehead is still bleeding. And a quick glance around the room showed Hero there was a passed out student on the floor, too.

Perfect. Just perfect.

“You four, take your friend and get out of here. Pull the fire alarm when you go, it’ll clear everyone else out. {Sidekick}, use the confusion to get gauze and bandages from the nurse’s office.” Their classmates stared, eyes wide, terrified.

“Behind you…”

Hero turned.

Villain was getting up.

Bad. Badbadbadbadbad. Another kid from their class was suddenly in front of Hero, their stance protective, ready for a fight. Wait, what were they- Oh.

Hero nodded to them, turned around and stepped away. “Go.” The command rumbled through their throat, demanding an objection.

“And pull the fire alarm!” Other Hero called after the swarm of students rushing out of the door. Probability any of them will return? 0%,” Other Hero cracked their knuckles as Villain regained their balance. “But the probability Villain gets their butt handed to them? 100%.”

Other Hero’s eyes landed on another classmate still in the room. “Sidekick, go get Hero.”

“No need,” Hero piped. They never imagined their identity would be exposed like this, but oh well. “Sidekick, I need you to get the bandages.”

“You’re- oh, we are going to have words.”

“Later.” The fire alarm screeched. “Sidekick, go!” Hero turned their attention back to Villain, only to see them being thrown through the nearest wall. Other Hero rushed past, towards their teacher, pulling debris and rubble away in their wake.

Hero dropped into a fighting stance beside the other kid as Villain charged.Hero blocked Villain’s punch and swung their leg out, catching them in the back of the knee. The villain tried to get back to their feet, but they were held down by their classmate.

“What did I tell you would happen if you came after them?” They spoke slowly, their voice a mix of chastisement and barely contained rage. “Go ahead, remind me what I said to you.” Hero was about to intervene but their sidekick called their attention to their teacher and the messy bandages. Teacher was covered in so many cuts, so many wounds. Mostly small ones, but there were a few larger gashes still oozing blood. They needed a hospital. But for now, the bandages would have to work.

Hero stood once they finished, carefully taking Teacher in their arms. They took a look around to survey the damage, their eyes catching on the student holding the unconscious villain by the back of their suit. Wrath swirled in their dark eyes. “I’m taking this one. Don’t try to stop me.” Their voice held a sinister promise. Hero nodded and moved to let them pass. They should have tried to stop them, Hero didn’t know what would happen to the villain, but they couldn’t bring themselves to stop them.

“Wait, you’re just going to let them take Villain?” Hero turned to the source of the voice, Other Hero. “What about arresting them? Isn’t that our job?”

“Villain hurt our teacher. They’re going with me.”

“Seriously, just who do you think you are? I mean obviously you’re a super, but there’s no way we’re letting you take Villain, he belongs in our custody.” Sidekick pointed an accused look their way.

“Sidekick don’t-“

The teen laughed and began to levitate. “Me? You know me as Supervillain. Now get Teacher to safety. I’m going to make sure this villain regrets his decision.”

Villain was never heard from nor seen again.

Part 1

Tw: description of wounds, knife, blood, accidental violence (marked as violence in the tags)

~~

Two cracked ribs. One fractured vertebrae. A dislocated ankle. A stab wound to the shoulder. All fresh, and the only one that had come from the fight was when the kid jumped in front of the knife to try and save their mentor. Hero was asleep, but Villain doubted they would stay that way if they started working on patching up Hero’s wounds. They needed sleep, evident by the dark circles under their eyes, but Villain needed to patch those wounds, and soon. Sleep wouldn’t help Hero if they bled out or died from an infection.

“Hero? Hero, wake up.” Villain reached for Hero’s uninjured shoulder, shaking them slowly. The kid’s eyes snapped open in an instant, their entire body going rigid when their eyes met Villain’s. “Hero, hey, you’re safe here. You’re okay.” They recoiled from Villain’s touch, but still stayed on the table. They weren’t running, which Villain perceived as miracle in itself. The kid looked around with wide eyes, no doubt taking in every detail of the place they could.

“You’re at my base Hero. You needed medical treatment, and I didn’t want to leave you where I found you after um… all that. This was the best option.” Hero took in a sharp breath. Tears formed in Hero’s eyes as they murmured the superhero’s name. They tried to sit up, but collapsed against the table with a whimper. Villain watched the irregular rise and fall of their chest speed up with a grimace. It must hurt when Hero took a breath.

“Look kid, I can’t even imagine what you’re going through right now.” They placed a hand on Hero’s shoulder and squeezed it lightly. To Hero’s credit, they didn’t shy away again. “I need you to stay still so I can get you somewhere to rest. Can you do that for me?” Hero nodded and squeezed their eyes closed. Villain picked up the hero, only for them to start squirming.

“Hey! What- let me go! I can walk!”

“Not on that ankle you can’t. It’ll have to be popped back into place before you walk anywhere.” Villain shushed their continued protests until Hero finally fell completely silent. That was, until the hero suddenly tensed in Villain’s arms. “Is… is that-”

“Villain…” Supervillain strolled down the hall towards them, looking not at the villain, but towards the hero. “I have a few plans to discuss with you. But first, why is Hero here?”

“Supervillain, I’ll explain everything in a minute. Could you get Healer for me, while I get them situated?” Supervillain— albeit confused— nodded to the other and watched as Villain carried Hero past them and stopped at the door of a small guest room.

Villain looked around at the room- just a bed and a small table off to the side. They brought Hero in the room and carefully set them on the bed. Villain moved to the table and grabbed the first aid kit. They reached in and pulled out a cold pack, holding it out to Hero.

Hero swatted the hand away, pulling themselves up to a sitting position and swinging their legs over the side of the bed before Villain could stop them.

"Hero lay down, you need to-"

"No."

"No?"

"I need to get back to them. I can't leave Superhero." They slid off the bed, failing to hide a hiss from the criminal.

“Superhero is gone, Hero. There’s nothing you can do.” They started softly. But when Hero didn’t stop, Villain stepped in front of them and tried again. “Hero, they’re dead. Now lay back down. You’re going to hurt yourself even more.”

Hero didn’t budge.

“Please let me go.” They whispered. But Villain didn’t move. “Please… Please let me go. You- you don’t know what they’re capable of. Please-

“Hey. Look at me.” Villain set a firm hand on Hero’s shoulder, and Hero looked up, eyes wide, jaw trembling, the poor thing was still afraid of-

Hero punched them square in the jaw.

Stars exploded in their vision. They barely heard the terrified apologies and questions of concern spewing from Hero’s lips as Villain stumbled back into a wall. A figure slipped past them into the room, Hero suddenly crying out in agony.

Villain honed in on the supervillain standing over the hero laying at their feet, curled up so tightly Villain couldn’t see their face. “Supervillain don’t hurt them! It was an accident!” Supervillain turned to look at Villain, their normal mask of indifference gone, replaced by something the villain couldn’t comprehend.

“Get Healer.” Villain didn’t know how they’d suddenly gotten beside the two, but they really didn’t care at this moment.

“All I did was touch them…” Supervillain gestured to the trembling human ball of limbs with a bloodied hand before turning back to Villain. “Tell me the person responsible for turning Hero into this is dead.”

Whumptober day 28 - Beaten

This @whumptober2019 fill is a High School AU and is also available on Ao3. No pairings, but it’s sort of pre-Avengers as family :) There is some cursing in this.

----- ----- -----

Tony gritted his teeth as another foot hit his legs, the same time another one hit his back. By now, he’d curled up to protect his chest and head, but they didn’t show any sign of stopping.

He would not give them the satisfaction of seeing him cry, though. He might be bruised, and bloody, and dirty, but they would not break him.

"Yeah, not so high and mighty anymore, are you, Stark?"

The best thing to do would be to stay silent, to just let them get it out so they’d feel like they won and would walk away. But if there was anything Tony was terrible at, it was keeping his mouth shut when he should.

So he looked up at Stone, at Hammer, at Killian, at Vanko, at Beck, and sneered. “Fuck you.”

Just in time, he managed to protect his face from the kick that followed. They got even more vicious, and he wondered if his ribs would be broken, but he couldn’t bring himself to regret it. Not when he’d seen the way it had knocked all of them off the high horses they felt they were on, the way it made them feel like they were the weak ones.

Which they were, honestly. Five against one, there was no way Tony could fight back and win and they had known it. Which was why, despite most of them usually hanging out with others, they’d gone for this together.

Because they all hated Tony.

Being smart, and rich, and good-looking, had not made him all that popular overall. There were enough people who wanted to be his ‘friends’ as long as they could get something out of it, and there were times where he was tempted. But if there was anything he’d learned from his Aunt Peggy, aside from how to defend himself, it was not to compromise himself for others, not when they would never return the favor.

It had left him fairly alone, which was an unfortunately familiar feeling, but at least he still felt like he could respect himself.

Unfortunately, that also left him vulnerable. And when the people who disliked him didn’t even have the courtesy of dealing with him individually, there wasn’t a whole lot he could do but try to make sure they wouldn’t do any lasting damage.

With the way they were carrying on, he was starting to worry.

“Hey! What’s going on here!?” The voice sounded vaguely familiar, and the hitting stopped.

Tentatively, Tony looked over to where the voice had come from, only to see Steve Rogers. And not just him, either - he had his entire group of friends with him, and none of them looked very happy.

“Mind your own business,” Hammer told them.

“Just teaching the Stark kid a little lesson,” Stone elaborated a little. Considering Tony was well-known and unpopular, he probably thought they’d leave them be after that. And Tony had to admit, for a moment he was afraid they would do exactly that.

But apparently, their rumored intolerance of bullying even extended to Tony himself, because Rogers only stepped closer, the others right with him. “Leave him alone.”

“Why the hell do you care?” Beck snapped. “Not like anyone gives a shit about him.”

“Last chance, assholes.” Rogers tended to be nicer about things - until he threw himself straight into a fight. Barnes, his best friend, had no such compunctions. “Back off or get your asses beat.”

They did not back off, and all Tony could do was watch in astonishment as Rogers, Barnes and the others completely swept the floor with the five of them. For him.

Huh. They might have hurt some ribs after all. His chest was feeling warm in a way it usually didn’t.
