Book Review(spoilers)

Hickory Dickory Death by Agatha Christie follows the intelligent Hercule Poirot, alongside Mrs. Hubbard, Inspector Sharpe, and a collection of students staying at 26 Hickory rode, investigate a story of theft and murder.

As always, for Agatha Christie is a master of telling mysteries, the book is quite enjoyable with an interesting level of depth and interesting characters to read. While it had taken a while for me to get really interested in it, and when compared to some of her other extraordinary works it is very small, Hickory Dickory Death is a book I recommend any mystery fan reads at least once.

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Tad sad imo

Midway thoughts on book

Midway Thoughts On Book

I'm a little over a seventh of the way into House of Leaves and thought I'd share my current opinion(without any major spoilers)---largely just so I can look back on it.

So far Zampano's book and The Navidson Record are incredibly interesting, and while at times it may seem he rambles, I've found it pays off. I look forward to seeing what further developments revolve around the closet, and whether or not they will eventually move on from it and have the house shift to reveal some new, impossible oddity. At the same time I'm not sure as so far it feels---though who knows if it'll stay like this---like things are about to go terribly wrong at the closet (in part they've already started to).

Truant also provides some interesting background information and he at his best he too can be rather interesting. But every now and then he throws a run on sentence spanning across the page(one even seemed to be two in length, but I might have missed so periods in all that mess of words). Then there's the bigger thing I find annoying about his perspective.

Sex

For the love of whoever has the authority to silence you, shut up about sex. And strippers, and breasts, and legs, and how all the girls look, and their privates, and cum, and doing drugs while thinking about sex, and again, sex. It provides nothing to the story but I keep having to read it anyways to make sure I don't miss out in anything important.

I like me thrilling and surreal meta-mystery without crappy adult smut, personally

But that aside the story is going well, still a lot to uncover and fail at understanding as it's 709 pages long, will update later.

Absent-Minded Man by Jerome K. Jerome

This is a humorous story about a man named McQuae who is inattentive to anything around him. He can’t remember invitation details, appointments and even the women he were engaged to. However, when he finally gets to marry a jolly woman named Leena, his friend, the writer thinks that it won’t last long as he will forget about her too. After a considerable time, the writer unexpectedly meets his old friend McQuae, drenched in water on a rainy day. McQuae as always informs that he has moved to the new place with Leena and has forgotten all about it. The writer very calmly takes his friend to a solicitor and finally restores him to his wife.

The story is hilarious. Some of the conversations made me laugh out loud. The first part of the story was narrated in second person, which is the rarest in English literature. This is the only story I’ve read which has this style of writing. So, I enjoyed learning something new.

I didn’t like the fact that the character of Leena was mostly in the shadow of her husband, McQuae, the protagonist of the story. Although she was explained as a cheerful woman, we don’t see her express any such action.

If I could change anything from the story I would have added more detailed information regarding Leena. So that the readers can have a clear idea of how she was able to live with a man like McQuae for so long.

Other than the aforementioned point, I found the story genuinely amusing. It shows that how absent mindedness can put someone in absurd situations. I, myself, often get distracted in many occasions. Now, I have started to focus more on my surroundings. This story has taught me a fine lesson.

I’ve actually wrote this for an assignment where I was supposed to write about a short story I liked. But unfortunately, the teacher is making us write a review on the story SHE tells us. I was so excited about this assignment in the beginning. Now, I’m devastated.
