Oh, the symbolism.
I loved the early seasons of the angels/heaven storyline. Dean was genuinely scared of these eldritch horrors and their unspeakable power, but he reacts to being scared of anyone by upping his 'being a little shit' quotient by a factor of 10 then waiting to see if it gets him dead.
And Castiel is like, "I don't know what this human is or why it's defiant to the point of being suicidal, but I'm keeping it," from the second they meet.
