minor spoilers for season 5 of the dragon prince
If you haven’t watched season 5 of the dragon prince, you should.
I binged it all on the plane, obviously, and one scene I find hilarious is one in episode 4, where callum, rayla, and amaya are getting ready to leave, and then janai storms in dressed in full queen regalia, with guards, demanding what the hell is going on, YOU DEFIANT LITTLE SHITS, and callum and rayla are freaking out, and amaya’s just in the back like, lol, don’t worry, she’s just a dramatic little shit sometimes :).
I love them.
Deeply enjoying the fact that Amaya and Janai’s wedding is the biggest event on the Sunfire elves’ calendar meanwhile Amaya hasn’t even let her nephews know she’s engaged
I know almost nothing about this fandom, so I might be missing some context.
but, um, why do the hermit crabs have swords?
YOOOOO WHAT THE?!!!
So In the meantime I watched new season of the Dragon Prince.
1. Why the fuck was it earlier??? I thought I messed up the dates again.
2. Please, I neez Zubeia to be alright.
3. Love Janai and Amaya.
4. Karim and his girlfriend can go and drop dead. I had enough of them. (More than Viren)
5. About that guy. Gosh, I love the choice he made. (Not that I want him dead). I mean, he gave up dark magic. Finally!!!!!!
6. Btw, what was that about child Soren???? Was he sick? I mean, what was the reason Viren even chose that dark path?
7. I need people to stop saying it’s all Viren’s fault Claudia is messing with that dark magic stuff. Yes, he introduced it to her, but it was her choice. She had every opportunity to give it up, just Like Viren finally did. Don’t get me wrong again, I still kinda like her, but she’s even more messed up than her dad.
8. Once again dark magic. Callum, really? Ok, I get it… you want to protect your precious Rayla… no. Don’t. Don’t you ever touch that stuff again.
9. Some stuff was predictable, like Captain Villads and Nyx (ir maybe it only was me 😂)
10. I guess I need a lil but more of Kim’dael
11. Akiu was funny. I wanna see more of her
12. So, elves and dragons said that humans are evil, but they asked a human to create a jail for Aaravos? Can’t they finally decide on one thing?
13. What’s more it was a human who exposed Aaravos’ treachery. (I know it was the previous season)
14. About this freaking elf. What the heck did he do to Aditi? Swollowed her? What???
15. I love the homunculus. Don’t you dare to touch him Aar. Seriously, he may be his “child” (is he gay and has crush on Viren?😂. Please no.) but it doesn’t mean he can be its father.
16. Please, Callum, fund a way to free Rayla’s parents and Runaan. I beg you.
17. Young Viren looks almost like Soren (or maybe again it’s just me?)
18. Whi is this one guard always talking about food?
19. I can’t believe Callum was tortured, And Soren was beaten. And rayla was supposed to be a fish food.
20. Finnegrin vs Domina. Hmmm…
21. I hate that Pirate.
22. Yay, Callum has new powers!!!! Ocean magic rules.
23. Soren really worries about his new family, doesn’t he?
24. Who the fuck is Mushroom Mage???? (I couldn’t stop humming after that)
seasons 1 to 3 don't take place over just one week! It can't be just that. Now this show is VERY BAD at letting us now visually what time of the day it is, BUT, I'm pretty sure each season covers roughly five days... I'll have to check later for seasons 2 and 3, but I'm absolutely certain season 1 takes places over one week because in S02E01 Callum explicitly states it in the letter her writes to King Harrow.
okay after much fucking around, here's what I've got
this is morning:
and this is sunset:
we already know that seasons conform generally to those of the real-world northern hemisphere
I'm sure someone has intricately laid out the timeline of s1 but I can't find it so, briefly recreated:
s1 begins the night of the full moon
the events of s1-s3 take place over a span of about a week
TTM begins days before the next new moon after the end of s3, covers the span to the following full moon, and ends on Callum's birthday
Callum's birthday is July 15
this means, counting backwards, that s1 begins in mid-June, possibly very close to the summer solstice, meaning a) everyone is by my estimation WILDLY overdressed, and b) the sun is rising and setting close to the furthest north point of its annual path
so if the balcony is actually oriented in some northeast-ish direction, it's theoretically possible to have these shots explained by something other than "sunrise/sunset occurs in whatever direction is most dramatic, fuck you"
(also that the shadow assassin headed for Neolandia isn't quite as off course as I thought, but on the other hand the one going to Del Bar is literally going 100% the wrong direction)
TDP SHIPPING POLL!
🔴CLICK HERE TO VOTE🔴 (Please share for more accurate results)
Hello and welcome to the second TDP Shipping Poll! It’s an online survey that will help us understand the shipping preferences of our fandom. I ran the first poll in 2020 after season 3 and now that season 5 is approaching, I decided it was time to run a new one. Two new ones, actually, as I would like to run one poll before and one - after the upcoming and later compare the results.
So let’s start with this one. The poll will run from June 1st to July 1st. I’m leaving the exact hours vague because I might need an extra hour or two to finish things up. I also leave myself the right to extend the poll if such need arises (e.g. I am physically unable to close the poll or the number of votes is very low)
More information is on the poll itself and under cut
How does this work?
The poll consists of three main parts: general questions, opinions about specific ships and the final wrap up. The general section covers basic demographic information as well as your shipping preferences. The questions about specific ships are divided into 6 categories to make the lists more manageable. Please note that the 6th category is dedicated to controversial ships - adult/minor, incest and ships with animals. This category will be hidden and you will be able to see it if you choose to.
Which ships are included?
Basically, all ships I've encountered online as well as the ships that people asked me to add, with the only exception being ships with the characters from Tales of Xadia (at least for now). If a ship you like wasn't included, you can submit it manually at the end of the poll and I will include it in the next poll.
Why were problematic ships included?
They are part of our fandom's shipping preferences and without them the picture would be incomplete. As mentioned before, they are hidden and you won't accidentally see them.
However, it is worth pointing out that I only consider adult/minor, incest and animal ships to be problematic. The following may not be everyone's cup of tea, but they're perfectly normal ships: - young adult x late teen ships where the age difference between the young adult and the teen is 5 years or less;
- older adult x young adult ships no matter the age gap. Both characters are adults;
- human/dragon or elf/dragon ships when both characters are adults.
Please remember that just because something squicks you out, doesn't mean it's inherently problematic.
Where will the results be posted?
The results will be published on twitter, tumblr, TDP subreddit and dreamwidth. I will publish the results bit by bit, because there are a lot of different categories to work through.
Have any questions?
Feel free to DM me on the mentioned platforms. I also accept constructive criticism!
YESSS!!! It was the very first thing through my mind! A lot of Ironborn references in Scumport! Nagga's bones anyone?? Rayla's fighting in Nagga's bones.
Anyone else getting Euron Greyjoy vibes here?
yeah, ideed, she's come to appreciate humans, but... What really gets me in that first passage is how she says humans "could be anything, they could take their own fates and change them"... As if elves couldn't. That is certainly what she believes: that she is bound to persue a path she may not really want, but cannot change.
Rayla really came to admire humans thanks to Callum. After all he did the impossible as a human, he could do anything or become anything just as he will change his "fate" with Aaravos' path of darkness, with her help.
"safe and warm" Callum is her home isn't he? she feels safe and loved with her, I can't with this.
Amazing how miserable she is in this story yet she's seems way more happy in season 4. Yes she isn't fully happy and a is a lot quieter than before given the circumstances but at least she's happier and not totally emo (cartwheel moment). She missed her boy (s).
how come no one is commenting on Rayla praising Soren for comming out?
S5 needed more jammies. Let those kids be comfy, not lying down to sleep on top of the covers in full armor and boots 😭
About Callum’s nightshirt… listen, S5 had so many Callum-Viren parallels, it had to be done. I maintain he’s pulling it off!
This poll os about this post.
Someone in the comments asked me if this really did happen and when it happened. It's in episode five. Several people commented on Rayla and Callum fist bumping, but I saw no one talking about the joke (?) itself!
how come no one is commenting on Rayla praising Soren for comming out?
I've been thinking... Maybe dark magic stems straight from star magic?
For a second there I even thought the "big reveal" would be that dark magic might just be star magic pure and simple, but that doesn't click.
Then season five came and I've got a little theory: dark magic is corrupted star magic, it's star magic backwards. This could make sense because while dark magic drains power from life, by way of killing/exploiting body parts from animals and magic creatures, I propose star magic creates life. Case in point: Sir Sparklepuff, aka viraavos' baby.
What Viren did there with Aaravos' help was using his own blood (therefore his own power/life force) and some incantation to bring life into the world. If that was indeed star magic (I'm inclined to think so) then star magic created a magical creature with its own unique existence.
What do y'all think?
I don't know what that would mean for the story but... the wheels are turning in my head.
from consuming butterflies' lifes to keep your good looks to -> making a living butterfly son with your own blood
From crushing butterflies to butterfly son 🦋
I've been thinking a similar line of thought, actually.
The lore we have says something something divination and seeing beyond, but they also focus on how little is truly known about Star Magic. So maybe that is somewhat off? I've speculated Star Magic might be connected with creating life (which is very god-like or deity-like, really).
In season five we learn that startouch elves are known as 'first elves' and that got me thinking about how we are all ultimately made of stardust? Like literally, from what I gather about our current knowledge regarding the origins of the universe, stars are nuclear reactors from which all matter comes from. It was in their nucleuses that atoms first formed and fused and became what eventually would be everything else. It's inside stars that Hydrogen becomes Helium and successively heavier mass is possible... Every atom in every molecule in each cell of our bodies was once part of a star.
And when some stars become bigger and heavier and older they become... black holes, right? And they swallow everything around them, warping even light, space and time itself.
So yeah a Star Magic -> Dark Magic pathway seems likely. And that would so reinforce the creating life -> destroying life motif.
This is more of a showerthought (that may become a longer meta later), but there does appear to be some sort of relationship between Dark Magic and Star Magic.
Callum mentions there is a Star spell that lets one recreate bodies for captured spirits. Which is interesting because that doesn’t seem to have much to do with divination or destiny (what Stars are mostly associated with), but sounds instead like a Dark Magic spell.
But then on the other hand, it does make a lot of sense when you think about what the Stars represent. In Callum’s Spellbook, Callum does point out that “Star magic” is really more like “cosmic magic.” It’s not just the stars themselves, but the cosmos as a whole that represents this primal source. Well, what does the cosmos mostly consist of.
That’s right, darkness. The haunting emptiness from which light consist of only a small minority of space.
So maybe it’s possible that Dark Magic is a “seventh source” in the sense that it is an offshoot of Star magic, but without the guiding light of the stars, it simply leads to rampant corruption and decay.
I mean Callum and Amaya being similar is not just something someone thinks, they are canonically similar. As per the Janai quote @theredhairedmonkey brought up above, but also like, word of god. There is a whole song in the soundtrack titled Like Aunt, Like Nephew.
It’s never not gonna be funny watching people fixate over vague Callum-Viren parallels when the show EXPLICITLY mentions the similarities between Callum and Amaya instead.
But actually.
Like, are there a few similarities between Callum and Viren? Yes.
Are they similar people? Not by a long shot.
They are foils, for sure, and probably the most important foil relationship in the show. But their foil relationship rests more on how different they are despite similar circumstances (I.e. both being high mages to a king).
There’s probably a list of ten or so named character that Callum has more in common with than Viren.
