Ted Lasso S3 Prediction: from the moment I first heard the “be a goldfish” line, I have been waiting for Ted to realize that we have to remember the difficult moments in order to grow.

I’ve been thinking a lot about The Lasso Way. Season 1 Episode 3 was the moment on my first watch that I said “something about this is different.” I’ve spent literal weeks trying to put it into words. Here it is. Maybe.

The Lasso Way is bewildering kindness. It is inauspicious, un-self-conscious, and completely disarming. Often, the fear that comes with sincerity of this kind is that we will be taken advantage of. But his refusal to be suspicious of others is the very thing that makes Ted un-sabotage-able. He is trusting: he sees people for who they could be, and with that vote of confidence, they become that person.

The Lasso Way is acting out of security in who you are and what you believe. We see villainous action from these characters not when they become wicked, but when they are guided by their insecurities. That’s what motivated Rebecca at the start of season 1. She wanted to take back control of her identity. One of the few times Ted lashes out is the night he signs the divorce papers. In some way, the same thing is happening with Nate. Maybe that’s why Ted shows up to that game in the trailer: he wants to remind “Nate The Great” who he can be.

No here’s the thing. While watching Ted Lasso, I thought to myself “this is the kind of person I want to be: kind, sincere, watches out for others.” Ted is so genuine that it confuses the people around him. And then, he is told that it is not enough. What more is there? I’ll see you all in S3.

Ted doesn’t care about winning. Rebecca does. The only moment we see him care about a trophy is when he promises her they’ll win it all. When you care for someone, you want the things they want. This is gonna be a good season.

It’s the “who’s on first” moment in the locker room for me

The second half of the game was hard to watch, but do take a moment to imagine being SO COOL AND SO BELOVED THAT AN ARMY OF HIMBOS WOULD COMMIT UNSPEAKABLE CRIMES ON YOUR BEHALF.

First we get “who’s on first,” now “I OBVIOUSLY CANNOT TAKE THE CUP IN FRONT OF YOU!” Thriving.

The shrink on the radio show in “Sleepless in Seattle” is named Dr. Fieldstone. That’s rom-communism, baby! Who else is keeping a tally of Nora Ephron references in the soccer show? Just me?

This is a shift, lads. This is a big shift. The sign is was? the front that Ted’s been putting up, and he’s done. He’s tired of that shit. It’s real now. The belief is inside. I mean right before the speech, we saw Ted successfully fucking COPE instead of hiding his pain. And he told Henry something REAL. This is a whole new ballgame, so to speak.

Now, about that Tedbecca scene—

If I had a nickel for every time an English television show brought me near tears over Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.

The whole of s3, everyone (myself included) has had a lot of predictions about the events of the coming episodes. Like, really specific, down to the way the scenes play out. I don’t see as much of that this week, and I can’t help but think it’s because Sunflowers was such a hard reset. Now, we are all walking around with question marks over our heads going “STRINGS? WHAT STRINGS?” And as much as I love being right about things, I am kind of psyched about going into an ep with almost no expectations, rom-communism style.

I deleted tumblr for finals but I’m back now and I have to tell someone about how symmetrical and poetic it is that we overheard someone calling Nate a wanker in episode 10 when he starts to actually act in a way that is consistent with his morals and what he learned from Ted.

What are they trying to tell us here? That you can do the right thing, even when it puts you in a bad position? That people are gonna talk shit no matter what? That British football fans really like to call people names?

I would like to posit that it is all of the above.

Hey I have a thought nbd just a thought: what happens to the AFC Richmond family when someone leaves? Like leaves for real?

Transitions are so hard. Change is hard. Leaving is hard. And it’s like the one thing the soccer show has not instructed me on.

THIS THIS EXACTLY THIS. IF NATE SHELLEY HAS NO SUPPORTERS I AM DECEASED.

I’m in love with Nate facilitating his own growth through his own connections, through connection with his family, through connecting with his own values. It’s not a Ted inspired speech. Nate did this on his own. He saw through Rupert and left. He worked through his anxiety and fear. He connected back to his family. He did all the work. And I love that Will is the person he made amends to - not the guys that used to bully him, not even to Ted. The kitman he was shit to because Will reminded him of himself, and he tried to treat Will the way his father treated him. The healing, you love to see it.

Okay about Nate’s apology to Will, tho. As someone who has never shut up once in my life, I can kind of relate to both Ted and Nate in the ways they describe and connect things when they talk, especially when they’re trying to be funny.

But Nate doesn’t do any of that with his note to Will. He doesn’t explain. He doesn’t grovel. He just says “I’m sorry.” He doesn’t hide behind clever turns of phrase. He doesn’t even call himself the wunderkind.

Idk I just thinks it takes a lot of courage to let a simple “I’m sorry” like that drift out into the open where anything could happen to it.

This week's Ted Lasso episode with Nate's father acknowledging the mistake he made while bringing up Nate and calling him "genius" and prioritising his son's happiness above everything else and this week's episode of The Marvelous Mrs.Maisel where Midge's father acknowledges his daughter's strength and fearlessness and how he regrets the things he didn't do for her.......interesting
