Supernaturals like werewolves and other shapeshfiters would not be harmed by this due to their supernatural healing abilities, they feel sting which wouldn't mean anything. Banshees however can be harmed by this flower but not killed, while Mages and Sorcerers often craft these flowers against humans who hunt them should they ever get caught by humans. A single petal is only needed to craft into a deadly weapon. Could be used against werewolves, kitsunes and other shapeshfiter creatures excluding Hellhounds, but would not be painful as they have intense regenerative abilities.

Sometimes Sirens may use Carnation flowers to enchant their lovers or victims.
Deaton was a man with a wealth of knowledge and a intriguingly phenomenal person who wasn't just a druid and a veterinarian, but also a mentor and father figure to Scott. He made me interested in him the moment he saved and aided Scott in season 1 without asking any questions of how he received critical injuries
I have this teen wolf headcanon that the reason Deaton started teaching Scott all this veterinary stuff that was far too advanced for a teenager working part time was because he thought Scott would make a good emissary in the future and so he was going to eventually introduce him to the world of the supernatural and train him to be one.
