You and Jacob have been friends ever since you became his neighbour when you were 7. You two even attended the same primary school, secondary school and now, an arts college. “What’s the reason behind the name Bae-by?” Kevin asked and you were pulled out of your train of thoughts. “Lee Yuri, you better not!” Jacob pointed a threatening finger at you and you lightly tapped Kevin’s shoulder, “Hey, how fast can you run?” Kevin burst out laughing, “Faster than Jacob anyday.”
“Why do I even try to stop you.” Jacob sighed in resignation. “So a long time ago, when I was first enrolled into the same primary school as Jacob, I used to live really far away. So for convenience, my dad decided we should move. But this is the real story behind Bae-by.”

You were seated alone at a table, for you hadn’t made friends yet. You knew your neighbour was in another class and you saw him for the first time today, but you hadn’t asked him which class, thus you were seating at the corner of the long bench. You pulled out your lunchbox and was about to dig into your sandwich, but you heard an all-too-familiar voice, “Can I sit here? The other tables are full. I’m Jacob, by the way.” Jacob didn’t even hesitate as he slipped into the seat opposite you.
“O-Okay.” You’ve never really interacted with Jacob. But thankfully you didn’t need to think of questions as he asked, “What class are you in?” “I’m in Class 1-2.” You finished up your sandwich, “What’s your class?” “I’m in Class 1-4, just two rooms down from yours.” You looked up from your lunchbox to see his eyes quaking. “What’s wrong?” Before he could answer you, a group of 3 bullies (pot-bellied bullies, you added) brushed past you and tugged Jacob violently out of his seat, “Hey Jacob Bae. Let’s talk outside.”
You shot out of your seat, “You aren’t taking him anywhere. Let’s go Jacob.” You grabbed his and your lunchbox, before nudging the bully and pulling Jacob away. “Are they following us?” You had your eyes glued at the outline of the general office. “Y-Yeah.” He huffed as he tried to catch up with you. “Hey little girl! Who do you think you are?” The leader caught up with you and you shielded Jacob with your body.
“I’m Lee Yuri. And if you dare mess with me, you’re not going to get the nice end of it.” You handed Jacob your lunchbox, and while your hands were behind your back, you signalled to him to run to the general office. He paused but when you glared at him from the corner of your eyes, he sprinted. “Guess he is too scared. What a baby!”
“Jacob isn’t a baby. He is highly intelligent unlike you guys.” You lied, your hands in a defense position, clenched fists hovering in front of your chest as you spread your legs out. One of the bullies (Seungyoun, you read the name tag) threw a punch, but you effectively blocked it and the impact sent him off balance. “What are you doing? Let Daejung show her who’s boss!” His sidekick, Youngho patted the leader’s back. Daejung puffed out his chest and you mentally rolled your eyes.
“I’ve a blue belt in taekwondo.” You brought up but Daejung didn’t heed your comment and begin to run to you, but once again you proved him wrong. “Mr Kim, they were the ones who were bullying me!” You halted and watched as Jacob cried, and the teacher sternly hollered at the three bullies, “Ahn Daejung! Kim Seungyoun and Lee Youngho! My office! Now!” The three of them cowered in shock and the discipline master herded them into the office.
Jacob wiped off his tears, “Are you okay?” You stared at him, “Are YOU okay? You were crying!” “I’m highly intelligent. It was supposed to get the discipline master all riled up.” He handed your lunchbox back to you. You continued to link the dots together, but he held your hand, “I’m fine! Come on! Let’s go back to class.”
“You cried because you’re scared. So that really makes you a baby.” You didn’t get the point.
“No! I tried to gain his sympathy. Do you know what sympathy is?”
“Jacob Bae. Bae-by. It’s a cute nickname. And no, I’m 7. That’s such a hard word!” Jacob facepalmed himself in embarrassment.

“So he will forever be Jacob Bae-by to me.” Jacob hid his blush behind the bags and thankfully you didn’t notice as you launched into another humiliating story. “Did I tell you when we were 13 and…” Kevin eagerly awaited your story.

Normal Jacob? Cute. A drunk Jacob? Utterly adorable. The thing is, no one really wants to be his drinking buddy. The other 10 members of The Boyz would find an excuse, usually leaving either Eric and Kevin behind since Jacob would giggle in English and the only the two of them can understand him. So when you heard a knock and an all-too-familiar laughter, you turned the knob and pulled the door towards you.
“Eric?” He smiled at you, “Hi noona! We’ve got a delivery!” Eric moved into your humble abode as Kevin heaved Jacob, “Hi. Parcel for the girlfriend of Jacob Bae?” You rolled your eyes, chuckling at their antics, “You know where my room is.” Kevin removed his shoes and he lugged a very tipsy, red-faced Jacob into your bedroom. They’ve been here a couple of times and every single time it’s because of a pretty drunk Jacob.
“Let me guess. A celebration?” Eric nodded his head vigorously as he made himself comfortable in the dining room, “Yeah. It’s to celebrate us getting first place in the Road to Kingdom!” He added the last part excitedly and you grinned, “I saw! I’m really proud of you all.” You reached out to pinch his cheeks and he swatted your hands away. “I'll grab water for the two of you.” You offered when Kevin emerged from the room, brushing his messy bangs out of his face, “Thank you. Awh dang, it’s a little too late to go back to the dorm right?” Kevin pouted, clearly meaning something else.
“Fine. You two can stay here for tonight. But as soon as the sun comes out, all three of you are going to go back to your dorm.” They held up their pinky fingers, “We promise!” Kevin once told you his fellow 98’ liner Changmin had weird tendencies and he had scared the life out of Eric and Kevin thrice, when he was drunk on three separate occasions. “Take off your coats and finish up your water. I’ll take the blankets out.” You did a quick work of settling the two of them and you bid them goodnight (and good morning because it was past 12 am).
Pouring a third cup of water and popping another two pills out of its shell, you headed into your bedroom. “Hi baby! Kevin told me we’re coming to see you.” He hiccupped and you pressed a kiss, “Hey boo, I need you to drink a little water.” You helped him up and he took a couple of gulps before gently nudging it. “Geez, how much did you have?”
“I might have a few shots. It was fun~!” He dragged out the final word and you removed his coat and placed it on the chair. “Let’s go to bed.” “No! I want to tell you about our final stage! Did you see me? I was fake fighting against Eric!” You hushed Jacob when his excitement got a little too loud but you answered him nevertheless, “Yeah, I saw. You were really dashing.” You tucked him into bed and he flipped to face you, eyes all hazy. Despite having drunk a couple of shots, you could still smell his citrusy scent and you gazed at him, brushing his brown locks away from his face.
“And...and I was so so happy! That we got first place you know? I had thought of you when we were giving our thanks. You’ve been here for me and I love you so...so much.” He hid his face in embarrassment and he giggled, “Yeah I love you so much!” You laughed, “I adore you too, my love.” In that position, Jacob fell asleep, his body hunched protectively around you.

Jacob raised an eyebrow incredulously at you from inside his car, his lips turning upwards, “Yes you. Hop in. I’ll give you a lift back home.” He definitely didn’t miss out on the fact that your face turned a shade redder at his offer.
Leaving his left hand on the steering wheel, leaned towards you who were still standing at the entrance of the company, “It wouldn’t be nice if I left you standing in the cold.” He supplied.
Jacob saw your resolve buckle as you finally reached out for the door handle, sliding into the car next to him. “There we go! Let’s buckle you in~!” Pulling the black seatbelt over you, he securely strapped you in as you stared dumbfounded at him, “I...could have done that myself, but thank you, Leader-nim.”
“We’re out of the company. You can just call me by my name.” Jacob waved you off and begin driving, eyes occasionally darting to you. You got comfortable as you rattled off your home address and Jacob keyed that into the GPS system.
“Didn’t expect you to be working this late. I thought you had went off with Juyeon, Kevin or Changmin.” You sheepishly rubbed the back of your neck, “Chanhee needed some help with with the excel sheets, but he left a little earlier because he needed to do something.”
“And by earlier you meant just after Juyeon and Changmin left?” Jacob knew you a little too well. “Yeah, but it’s alright I didn’t have any other engagement after work.” You (rather adorably) defended your colleagues as Jacob flicked the lights, signaling that he was going to turn right. He glanced at you as you stifled a yawn. As expected of his most hardworking junior working with him.
“Take a rest. I’ll wake you up when we reach.” Jacob assured. You were mid-yawn when your eyes widened, “I...can?” “I can’t stop you for taking a short nap, right?” Jacob teased back. As the car slowed to a stop at the traffic light, he grabbed the blanket and draped it over you.
“Sleep.” He firmly stated, patting you on the head twice before returning his attention to the road. “Thank you...Jacob.” You tucked the blanket under your chin as your eyes fluttered close. He couldn’t help but smile at your vulnerable sight, unlike your usual serious and uptight self.
