I just love that before I even had baldurs gate and knew anything about the dark urge I created a dnd5e character that was an elf barbarian (thought that was funny) with the 'haunted one' background.

I made a version of him for my dark urge run through <3

Brief overview of his story ⤵️

His name is altair and his story was that he was adopted by a half-orc barbarian family, raised to fight like they do, loved unconditionally. He had strange blackouts growing up but never did anything malicious (without good intent). He was (unbeknownst to him) picked by a bhaalist cult as their chosen. When he was 15, he ended up blacking out and killing his entire family. They lived in a small house in the forest, so the only ones that knew what happened were the cultists that always spied on him (through spells and such). They saw him unconscious and took him back to their temple.

When Altair came to, and realised what he had done, he tried to take his own life. The cultists didn't let that happen, but it resulted in injuries that left him unable to speak. The cultists indoctrinated him. Told him he was meant to be there, told him what they were doing was important and good for the world. So he stayed, every night he was visited by apparitions of his siblings, who encouraged him to carry on and do good.

Until he found documentation of his families incident, he learnt that it was the cult initiating the blackout. He went into a rage and tried to escape, killing any cultists that got in his way, but also creating paths for any trapped/indoctrinated children to follow. He destroyed as much as he could.

Afterwards, all he does is travel from town to town, using his strength to help who he can, getting rid of anyone he deems morally wrong. He knows he was 'destined' to harm people, but he doesn't want to.

I feel sorry for Orin

repurposed from an old Reddit post of mine

Raised from birth in the Bhaal cult and has never known ANYTHING else. Literally the result of incest between her mom and Sarevok (her father AND grandfather) - and for her entire life is actively manipulated and groomed to worship her "Grandfather" second only to Bhaal (leaving a disgusting implication that Sarevok might eventually try again). Literally every single day of her life spent in a murder cult, never knowing anything else.

Her mother is actively manipulated when Orin is seven to try to kill her daughter, only for Orin to reflexively kill her first, at which point Orin was briefly possessed by Bhaal himself (per some Sarevok dialogue). AT AGE SEVEN. And even from a young age, Orin's true gift is her artistry, a talent that outside the Bhaal cult probably could have been nurtured into something phenominal, but inside the cult is twisted into a sinisterness in the kill that, when she's out of earshot is decried as wasteful.

She eventually rises through the ranks (never have had any choice), having never felt a meaningful moment of compassion or kindness and, desperate to be cared about, sees the power and fear and respect her bloodkin (The Dark Urge) has gained and uses their hubris to take them out.

Ironically, in the timeline where Durge lives, they get a gift Orin couldn't even dream of - a 2nd chance. With their brain scrambled and the tadpole present but being interfered with, the Dark Urge got a chance to be someone new. (Whether they accept or reject that 2nd chance, they at least got a choice this time).

What did Orin get for her troubles? Her (grand)father openly coveted to either take her out, or worse, take her out - when the time was right, her own allies both detested her (Gortash openly revels at the idea of working with the Dark Urge again)

and most brutally, if you manage to confront her with the truth, any of it? About Sarevok, about her mother, etc? She immediately believes you. And for one (1) moment, maybe there's hope for her.

Hope that Bhaal immediately rips away; an Orin confronted with the truth and showing even the slightest hesitation is immediately forcibly transformed into the Slayer by Bhaal himself, with a strong implication that the core of the old Orin is gone forever win, lose, or draw. "No more doubts, no more fears, no more Orin. Become murder.". Seeing what Bhaal's reaction was the moment Orin had one (1) instant of hesitation also confirms that she'd likely have never had the chance to choose differently, either Bhaal would always step in or else she'd eventually meet her end.

Imagine the AU where Orin takes her CLEAR flair and artistic talent to become a truly great artist. Where she gets the same second chance that Durge got - If she'd been able to use her talent for impersonation and desire to great to do something powerful instead of being forced by her family from childhood into the family business of murder.

She literally never had a chance. Even Bane and Myrkul and their respective cults were never so unfathomably cruel, and she never knew anything else.

At least for my own first game, though, my Durge recognized that without her "sister," she'd have never gotten the chance to save the world, never met Shadowheart, never stopped a century worth of Ketheric's torture on Dame Aylin, never set in motion the liberation of the Githyanki...In the right world states, Orin unwittingly saved the world, but it's a world she'll never get to see or know, and probably never could have.

That's tragic as hell.

okay but imagine if you will: durge still struggles with chronic migraines even after being cleansed of the urge because of all the, yknow, head trauma and post-game is finally able to take care of themself a little bit so when they get a migraine/headache the big scary bhaalspawn needs to go lie down for a bit and close their eyes. and their romanced partner (could be any of them) makes them some tea or strokes their back or something.

Larian said give something to the duregtashers, as a treat. Can someone tell me what this looks like in the game?

Even more worms in my brain

Okay so I'm writing my pre-game durgetash fic and I think I'm going to title it To The End. That song really encompasses the vibes they have going on in my head. Mania, my Dark Urge, and Gortash were married either for political reputation or for mutual obsession. I remember in the "Forgive me Father" letter Mania says that Gortash will be the last one she kills at the end of the world. And I do believe in the temple of Bhaal there is a letter that says the bhaalists treat marriage like a suicide pact. That's crazy.

Also in my head-canon shortly after this peak in their relationship and shortly before Orin's assassination attempt Mania goes crazy, AKA her own mind already trying to break from the urges. She makes the Oath of Vengeance/Redemption. It's literally "say goodbye to the life you made" and "walk away from the choice you made". She doesn't fight back Orin to her whole strength but her last thoughts are still heart broken.

Yeah yeah, all the events of the game happen. But eventually, Mania does end up "allying" with Gortash. She's in a close relationship with Astarion at this point but that doesn't stop her body and mind from having intoxicating reactions to "my favorite assassin" and "my nearest and dearest" and other nobles at Wyrm's Rock confirming the nature of their relationship.

If the earlier paragraph didn't make it clear Mania obviously resisted Bhaal and her urges. Her convictions to end the absolute are higher than ever. But she holds onto Gortash still the very end. She walks down the morphic pool in silence while Gortash speaks praises of their combined power and the companions waiting on her signal. At the very first brain quake, knowing this is the end. She smites him. It's over in 3 turns (haha I was playing on explorer mode).

"If you marry me Would you bury me? Would you carry me to the end?"

Besides the brain itself, he was her last kill as it was always intended to be.

So there's To The End, which was what the whole post was about. I didn't want to go line for line in explaining, this was more interesting, it but I could've. I made a non-serious post that Drowning Lessons reminded me of them too. But I think there's a lot of My Chemical Romance songs that I relate to this relationship. Probably because I've been listening to them since I was a kid. Its gonna take me forever to write this fic because I keep thinking of stuff lol.

This is my Dark Urge Mania btw. I don't have good screenshots because I was playing on Xbox. When I made her I just looked up "evil names" lol and thought Mania sounded cool. But I was reading my player's handbook recently and tieflings actually have "virtue names" that can describe either their personality, a goal, or a grim destiny. The latter in this case. So it fits. Of course, she's not really a Tiefling, just a cruel mimic of one made by bhaal.

She started as Oath of Vengeance subclass and that outfit is what I typically picture her "canon" clothes to be. I purposefully made her an oathbreaker by freeing Sazza at the enclave. I thought the spells were cooler. But it fits the lore. She wouldn't have even remembered what her oath was. And then post-game I imagine her taking up an Oath of Redemption. She kills Gortash right before the brain. And then right after Karlach dies in her arms so she's just like "I'm so over all this death stuff". She's fine still witnessing it and being a chaotic vigilante but she'll never be the one to do the deed of killing herself. (That's Astarion's job)

I'm going to cosplay her.

Other stuff:

She doesn't know how old she is. Younger than Abdel Adrian. But definitely older than she looks. She's functionally immortal thanks to Withers.

She's got crazy scars (magic and physical) thanks to victims fighting back, Kressa's months of vivisections, self-inflicted, and bite marks. Is missing several organs and lots of brain matter.

Her favorite weapons were the Everburn Blade and Sword of Chaos. I used a bunch of weapons but those are the standouts.

She was semi-apathetic about killing Alfira. She was more concerned about the lack of control she felt after. She felt a similar wave of unconscious overcoming her at Last Light and tried to warn Isobel about it. She was almost begging to be retrained. But ultimately Isobel didn't make it. She still has nightmares about it.

Closest platonically with Lae'zel because they mutually respect the high-strength stat. (She was nearly always in my party, I was trying to a mostly melee run)

Quickly fell in love with Astarion. At first it was just because she's into biting. But she knows what its like to not be in control so she would fight tooth and nail for his freedom too. Araj and Cazador and the like made her see red more than Bhaal ever did.

Divorced from Gortash. Had a consensual affair with Halsin. Straight😔

She is 5' 3" (at the top of her head).

It looks grey in the picture but her hair is like a darker blue with just gray highlights.

I think she'd like to get tattoos with Astarion after the game but I haven't decided what.

She's prone to mood swings thanks to Orin's "lobotomy". For example some days she hates Orin and draws pictures of her just to rip up but sometimes she cries over her and wishes she could've resisted too. Very extreme in everything she does and says.

She enjoyed being under the control of her family, allowing them to have complete control over her and relieving herself from the burden of thinking or making decisions on her own. She planned heavily on staying there for the rest of her life.

However, everything changed when an intruder targeted her household. Tragically, they mercilessly murdered her entire family, leaving a gruesome sight in their wake. Surprisingly, though, Aaven was left unharmed and untouched. This cruel act left her bewildered and isolated, thrusting her into a life of self-reliance. In the midst of her newfound autonomy, she ventured outside, seeking to inflict chaos upon Baldur's Gate. But fate had a different plan in store for her. One fateful day, she found herself ensnared by the clutches of the nautiloid.
