The Idiot - Tumblr Posts
you meet an idiot on the train and you become good friends but then he sees the picture of the love of your life (he knows her from and dream) and she agrees to marry you only to save him from herself (she knows him from a dream) and your life becomes a constant battle for this love between the two of you (you exchanged crosses and are brothers) (he sees your eyes everywhere) until eventually she leaves him at the alter and returns to you and you use the knife you've had since you met him and place her dead body on her bed and you and him sleep next to her and you whisper to each other as his tears fall onto your cheek
What's more sexy than a guy trying to kill you over a woman but you keep being nice to him so he kills the woman instead
Crosses as a sign of affection in Dostoevsky's works
When Sonya gives a cross to Raskolnikov, it's a sign of her great affection for him (romantic even, one can say), it somewhat means that she supports him in his path to get better and the cross is a symbol of faith in general, but it can also imply her faith in his change
But Raskolnikov does not give Sonya any cross back (there is no exchange), because he doesn't have any
Which I read as a symbol that he hadn't have the emotional capacity to care for somebody (maybe like, for somebody new because he already cared much about his sis and mom)
He slowly realised his affection for Sonya while he was on Syberia, so after some time (years even) after Sonya showed him affection first
There still wasn't crosses exchange there but they got a touching confession/apology scene so I think it counts also
And then we have The Idiot which has that scene between Myshkin and Rogozhin at Rogozhin's place which consists of a long talk which mentions the love-pity difference suspiciously frequently, every time Myshkin wants to leave Rogozhin literally begs him to stay and sit with him, because if the prince leaves, Rogozhin will start to miss him and then hate him all over again (yeah, totally straight to this moment, right?) and then we have that cross exchange scene and they give each other (!!) crosses (!!) so it can mean... they care for each other??? Like it's a mutual feeling??? But what feeling???
Why did Dostoevsky write two similar ship dynamics but one with a one-sided cross giving (meaning one-sided feelings at that moment in the book) and then one with a literal cross exchange??????!! Sir, what did you meannnn.....
Okay the thing about Dostoyevsky is that you have „the idiot“ which is like the saddest thing you‘ll ever read and all good and kindness is in vain in this world but you also have „Crime and Punishment“ which is like „oh, maybe, redemption is possible“
In that face... there is so much suffering,
Prince Myshkin; The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky
he tells you “you’re beautiful”, but when Prince Myshkin said when Nastasya asked him
“Will you love me for as I am, nothing?”
“I will, Nastasya Filippovna”
sometimes I'm just nastasya filipovna because I'm born with this body, mind and soul. and i need a prince myshkin to love me beyond my flaws, my rotten body, my sins, and mistakes for being born this way.

Dostoevsky writes like he’s desperately trying to reach a 15,000 word count on a paper that’s due at 3am and he hasn’t slept in three days and he’s also a little high(it helps him focus)
Next time anyone tells me "Dostoevsky is a boring classic", I'll point them to the whole Tumblr fandom that actually exists. His works are close to 200 years old, by the way, and still amazing.
“Don’t let us forget that the causes of human actions are usually immeasurably more complex and varied than our subsequent explanations of them.”
— Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Idiot (trans. Constance Garnett)
when nastasya filippovna wrote “I almost do not exist now and I know it; God knows what lives in me in place of me” and raskolnikov told sonya “Your worst sin is that you have destroyed and betrayed yourself for nothing” and liza said “It has always seemed to me that you would bring me to some place where there lives a huge, evil spider, as big as a man, and we would spend our whole life there looking at him and being afraid” and the underground man was like “It was from feeling oneself that one had reached the last barrier, that it was horrible, but that it could not be otherwise; that there was no escape for you; that you never could become a different man; that even if time and faith were still left you to change into something different you would most likely not wish to change; or if you did wish to, even then you would do nothing; because perhaps in reality there was nothing for you to change into” and ivan said “I must respectfully return the ticket” i. just. Felt that.
Bruce jumped when he felt Andie's powers take control of his limbic system, his heart rate steadying in a way it rarely did unless she was around and feeling a bit controlling. He jumped a second time when she started screaming in his face, but he found it easier to get himself under control when Andie was forcing it upon him. The Hulk grumbled unhappily in the back of his mind, but there was nothing either of them could do about it.
He had forgotten how much he missed her, red-faced and pissed as she was. She had done something new with her hair, he knew it, and she looked... well, good. He just stared at her face for a moment, trying to think of a good answer, before he just said, softly, "Andie." He shook his head, trying to remember what- Oh, right.
"It was the right choice," Bruce said back, trying to work up an argumentative spirit as best as he could with Andie gripping his emotions like she was. "You're both safe, aren't you? I made the right choice, Andie, don't think for a second that I haven't, because God knows if you two would've made it to this point if I hadn't left!"
Andie’s eyes had adjusted to the darkness after a few minutes, a determined look on her face. She used her powers, trying to see for sure if the figure holding the candle was Bruce. It was. She turned and handed the still sleeping toddler to Hank who just looked on helplessly as Andie trudged forward, hands balled into fists at her sides. The look of anger on her face was down right thunderous as she expanded her powers out to cover Bruce and keep his emotions in check. She didn’t particularly care if he liked it or not. Hulk was taking a time out while she talked to Bruce and that was all there was to it.
"Bruce Banner what the ever loving fuck were you thinking?! How dare you just up and leave me like that!” She hollered, stopping mere inches from him.
