Element Study 2: Fire & Stories

Today’s lesson was a bit less specific than the last one. Everyone had an idea about what to do with fire in general, but no idea with its unique properties. Then nobody wanted to poke stories after I told them not to use it.

1. Fire

Fire is an interesting element for me, I don’t tend to use it because for the most part I can replicate it using water, air, and solar properties. Sometimes I need to though, and so that’s why it became number 2 on the list of elements to take a look at.

To start with, fire is the element of passion and warmth, as well as, fire and burning. Meaning this can be used for weapons, protection, and assistance. Yes, it’s not just for burning people. Wild.

I personally have used fire in the past for speed, and to back things up with power. I’ve also seen fire used for comfy blankets, instant warming clothes, a lot of cold resistance gear, and some incinerators. Although my personal incinerator is now a web of decay energy stretched over some wards. Fancy.

Fire is also useful for boosting your physical abilities in the astral: faster, stronger, better at improvising. If fire works for you, it’s an amazing tool.

Go forth and find out about fire for yourself! It’s a spot of fun.

2. Stories

Stories is extremely powerful, if I’m being honest it’s the most powerful element I’ve dealt with. Stories can manipulate people and effect the world around you, and as a result the elemental version has the power to manipulate reality.

This is why you Should Not Use It, unless you are Very Experienced. Reality could be fun to manipulate but it’s not a good idea unless you know what you’re doing. It could backfire badly, especially for people not used to handling high-power elements. Stories itself is one of the more powerful elements to try and handle, nearly everyone believes in stories, and as a result it’s strong.

Stories can be used to effect reality, emotions, the programming of other elements, and the creation of new things.

3. Bonus Round: Flowers

I had enough time to cover the element of flowers, this isn’t a very powerful element, and it’s closely tied with wood and earth. Flowers is the gentler sibling of these elements, better being used for healing. It can effect moods, as well as provide a stable base for other elements.

Also, a more romantic idea, make a little bouquet of flowers with it for someone special.

Wendigos, Demons, Dragons.

I need to do a PSA about this, so please bear with me. This is about a phenomenon I’ve seen where inexperience will give rise to people assuming they’re dealing with a cooler/more dangerous entity then they are.

1. Wendigos

The first rule of wendigos is, it’s probably not a wendigo. If you think you’re being hunted by a wendigo then go through this short checklist before anything else, because the chances are that it’s going to be a nature spirit.

What season is it?

Where do you live?

Is there a forest nearby?

What temperature is it where you live?

Can you hear the wind howling your name like some kinda weird horror movie?

If the answer to 1 is anything other than Winter, move on. Wendigos are a Northern North America phenomenon (think Alaska, Canada, a little ways into the northern US states.) They hunt in forests, if you’re in an urban area chances are you’re fine. Temperature? Temperature is important, wendigos need cold. If it’s warmer than 10ºC or 50ºF, then the chances are you don’t have a wendigo.

That last one is probably optional but still, if the wind is howling your name then you check in with your nearest experienced witch.

Fun Fact: Wendigos can unlock doors.

↓ One ugly motherfucker.

2. Demons

As opposed to wendigos, if you think something’s a demon, it might fucking well be.

Demons do exist, and the issue I’m actually going to talk about with demons is that a lot of people assume when trying to work with demons, that demons for some reason will not fuck them over. They will and they do, if you have to deal with demons remember this: Get checked for parasites. Also, do not keep your demons, they can cause more harm to you than you could think possible. A fight with something mildly terrifying like an eldritch god is something I’d take over having a demon parasite farm.

Fun Fact: You should not disrespect Goat Man’s bridge until you have some serious experience.

God bless Shane Madej.

3. Dragons

Guys, for real though, if a dragon is talking to you get that shit checked out. Entities lie, a lot, there are a lot of entities who will screw you over for fun.

New Server!

Hi everyone! I’ve been working hard behind the scenes and I now have my most fabulous brand new discord server open and ready to go!

It’s called the Bamboo Teagardens and we’re now open for business!

Bamboo Teagardens is a witchcraft server focused on both community and mental health. While we’re currently rather small (we only actually opened for business two days ago), we already have some master witches around (myself and a bone witch for example, so we have novus and serusgen covered.)

We’ve managed to get a few partnerships too, and would really like to expand enough to start classes and such soon! Here’s an updated invitation as the last one became invalid.

Southern Hemisphere & Yule

The time of year is upon us.

Every witch will be on discord or tumblr seeing people gearing up for that yuletide spirit, and with that comes a bunch of us Southern Witches (and by southern I mean the kind with corks hanging off their hats) looking around in confusion and wondering, quite frankly, what the hell we’re meant to do with this bushfire filled horrible lovely hot summer?

Well, you could, of course abandon the yuletide spirit and switch it up for the Sabbat of Litha. Bonfires, honey, oak... the usual really.

My personal favourite option is to play it what I call Chaos Style. There are always similarities in Celtic celebrations, common threads are very very easy to find. The first one is: BONFIRES. Celtic paganism is full to brim with bonfires. Harvest time? Bonfire. Winter solstice? Bonfire. Party for any reason? Bonfire. So you can always start with a little bit of fire.

Total Fire Bans will usually be in place though, so maybe substitute a campfire scented candle for a real fire.

Next up? Mistletoe. Both Litha and Yule have strong associations with mistletoe, so if you’re wanting to decorate a little traditionally then mistletoe works no matter what.

Now you’ve got the basics, let’s get the rest. Basically, do whatever makes you happy at Yule, because even though you’re a witch, or a pagan. Christmas is Christmas and Christmas is something I’m pretty sure we can all get behind. Put that LEGO Christmas Village up as an altar, make some gingerbread. Elderflower champagne is traditional Litha drink? Great, elderflower cordial is in every Christmas themed home magazine in Australia, usually.

Make your own rituals and live your best life. Happy Yule, happy Litha, joyous Hanukkah, and Merry gosh diddly darn Christmas.

I love Christmas.
