A few years ago a roommate abruptly decided to move out to live with her boyfriend, and I ended up spending half a year sharing an apartment with someone I had never met before: an Egyptian girl with very limited English.

She was confused by my appearance and asked me “boy or girl?” It took me a while to understand what she was saying, but eventually she got the point across, and I told her that I was a girl. She seemed unsatisfied, and I explained that I was transgender. Unsurprisingly, she didn’t know the word.

We ended communicating by typing our respective sentences into Google Translate. Unfortunately, whatever the Arabic word for “transgender” is, it wasn’t a word she knew either. Eventually I ended up typing in “I used to be a boy but it made me unhappy so I decided to be a girl.” She stared at it for a moment then asked “You are happy now?” I said yes, and she smiled and looked thoughtful.

A couple hours later she came up to me and said “You and me, we are sisters,” and gave me a hug. “You say you are girl, you are girl.”

The word "narcissist" was named after the Greek mythology character Narcissus.

That would make it similar to the word "draconian", which was named after the Athenian tyrant Draco.

By that information alone, it would seem as if there's nothing ableist about calling abusers narcissists.

Now imagine that people were diagnosed with Draconian Personality Disorder, which was a trauma response that caused those affected to respond extra harshly to those who slightly wronged them. Imagine that it was common for people to say "draconians do this, draconians do that, 5 ways to spot a draconian", and they seemed to always use the word "draconian" even though it would be so easy to use a synonym. Imagine that abuse victims struggled to be taken seriously but were easily taken seriously when they say they're a victim of "draconian abuse". Imagine that people frequently wished death on all draconians while applauding people with power who have the exact same patterns that get labeled as draconian.

That would clearly be ableist. And that's exactly what's happening with narcissism.

We get shit for not being independent and on our own, for living with family members, for being unemployed, for depending on caregivers. People call us losers, leeches, burdens, lazyasses. Like, all of this happens to us all the fucking time. We literally live this.

It doesn't matter one jack bit, doesn't mean a rat's ass to us, that it hasn't happened to you. You are not what these conversations are for.
