tw: tic disorders and tourettes syndrome
ik this isn't my usual blog stuff but pls reblog if u see this. as someone with a tic disorder, i wna try and clear a few things up <33 (if ive made any mistakes, pls feel free to correct me)
if you only notice someone ticcing when tics are being discussed or someone else is ticcing, this DOES NOT MEAN THEYRE FAKING! discussing or seeing someone else tic is a common trigger.
if someone is ticcing e.g. banging their fist against their chest, don't try to restrain them because it can be very overwhelming and uncomfortable, best way i can think to describe it is like when someone is holding your nose and you can't breathe. if they're hurting themselves the best thing would be to get a pillow or something and put it in the way so they hit that instead.
a tic disorder and tourettes syndrome is not the same. im not an expert, but i believe the difference is that tourettes has quite strict guidelines that need to be met and a tic disorder is when it doesnt tick all the boxes. both can be disabling and long term or life long. there are also different types of tic disorders.
there is a difference between redirecting or suppressing tics and just choosing not to tic. there is no on or off switch, like how theres a difference between masking autism and choosing not to have it.
You know what is a terrible disease that people don’t talk about enough? Eczema. People think that its just itchy skin, but it’s not. It’s an autoimmune disease that has no cure and doctors don’t even know what actually causes it.
I’m dealing with a bad flare right now due to the heatwave in my area and all the smoke in the air from wild fires and my skin fucking hurts. Really fucking badly all over my whole body. It hurts to move. It itches so bad but when I give in and scratch, it hurts more. It hurts and it itches and all I can do is lay here and try to distract myself.
It makes it hard to sleep. I wake up from pain every time I switch positions.
It’s on my neck and I can’t turn my head without major discomfort.
It’s on my back and torso and I can’t turn my body without major discomfort.
It’s on my legs and it hurts to walk.
It’s on my arms and it hurts to reach for anything.
All I can put on my body is Vaseline because anything else used to moisturize makes it burn.
It feels like I’m on fire. My immune system is literally killing my skin.
And guess what? One tube of ointment, the only thing that gives me relief, costs $100. My insurance only pays for it every two weeks but a tube only lasts me five days.
Eczema isnt just a nuisance, it’s terrible disease that causes pain and scarring and sometimes even disfigurement. It deserves more attention and sufferers deserve more support. The medicines we need to stop our suffering are exorbitantly priced and we have no choice but to pay whatever amount they demand because we cannot function without it. And in the fight to lower medicine costs, we are forgotten because people think it’s a minor disease with minimal symptoms whos affects are only superficial in most people’s eyes.
Don’t forget about us in your disability activism.

Reminder that if an "accessible" toilet requires a key to open, it is not, in fact, accessible.
fuck self-closing disabled toilets that require a key all my homies hate self-closing disabled toilets that require a key
I present: the Leaves Yer Door Ajar 3000™
ID1: a sort of wide rectangular brick-like object in my hand, made out of several layers of folded up paper towel, inside a disabled toilet. end ID1
ID2: the same brick shaped rectangle of folded paper towels, now placed in a crack in the door of the disabled toilet, leaving it ajar. end ID2
(it'll only leave it open for the next person unless they put it back or make a new one when they leave, but hey it'll save at least one person from this inaccessible bs, and hopefully the staff of this place will get the hint)

Growing Up Disabled
Maybe I’ve always been this way.
Always in need of a helping hand
Always in need of more support.
Would my parents love me any more
If I was born
The way I was supposed to be
Without the pain
Without the awkwardness
Without the need?
But I grew up this way,
It’s all I’ve ever known
So why be sad
When I can be glad
That today is better than most.

Mobility Aids
Walking can be hard
So I don’t.
I wheel around
To avoid the hurt.
The pain
The suffering
Is all too much
So I use these tools
To avoid the muck

Me just going up stairs 😩
rant incoming but
actually can’t believe how some people value certain people less and think of them as less of a person just because they have a condition that affects their ability to do things. like. use your brain for more than two seconds. why does it matter to you if someone can’t exist in the way you do? how actually dimwitted do you have to be to get pissy because someone else can’t run a fucking marathon? ableism is a very real thing and i know that regardless there will always be someone hating someone else for one reason or another, but it never fails to confuse me as to how someone can think of someone as a problem due to a disability that does not affect them. HOW????
this thought may or may not have been provoked because of something that just happened lol
and the thing is with this. if anyone who is disabled (mentally or physically) complains about these things people WILL get mad about it. they get all bothered because how DARE someone who is experiencing something that limits their ability to do things be upset about it. do people have no fucking souls? you see someone who is dealing with something far out of their control and your first reaction isn’t to try and help them, but to YELL AT THEM??? to push your anger and annoyance onto them instead of just keeping your mouth shut. if you see someone on the street with a mobility aid? it’s FINE to think whatever the fuck you want about it. do NOT comment on it. if you know someone who’s struggling to clean around the house because of chronic pain? is it annoying you? TOO FUCKNG BAD!! that’s not an excuse to blame them or say “they’re apart of this house!!!!!” “they have to take responsibility too!!!” there are many other ways to work around that than do that. and god forbid if someone has a mental disability!!!!!!!!!! the stigma around that is genuinely so awful. people always say they’re in support of mental health and disability awareness until they see the “bad” side. autism is something to not be afraid of and to be aware of UNTIL it’s having mental breakdowns over “small” or “childish” things. until it’s lashing out at people and getting so overstimulated and mad at minor things that you hurt others. FOR GODS SAKE, there will always be things people don’t like. they see something, a symptom, a behavior, and they decide “yes, i support your condition, BUT-“ you’re terrible. i don’t care if im mean for this. if you blame people with a restrictive disability for any of this, GENUINELY DIE. the world is becoming a safer place for people, but it’s NOT there yet. people are still terrible and things are still hard. it doesn’t matter if we have more support. we still need it.
Heat Intolerance
This disability pride month I'd like to talk about heat intolerance. Because honestly although it's not the first health issue that presented symptoms in my life. It was the first time I was like "I don't think my body works right".
And honestly given disability pride month is during one of the hottest months in the year. It seems fitting. Especially because there's a lot of disabilities and medications that cause it.
What is heat intolerance?
Simply speaking it's the inability for the body to regulate it's temperatures especially in hot settings to cool itself down.
Why is awareness important?
Because gaslighting people or worse not providing them a place to cool down just because you "feel fine" is extremely fucking dangerous.
What are the medicines that can cause heat intolerance?
Antihistamines (Allergy medications) . Decongestants (Sudafed or any medication that has the D at the end of it). Stimulants (ADHD medications. Steroids. Caffeine.) Beta-blockers (blood pressure medications). Overactive bladder treatment. Psychiatric medications (including but not limited to medications for depression and anxiety). Pain relievers. Antibiotics.
What medical conditions can cause heat intolerance?
EDS (Elhers-Danlos syndrome). Autism. ADHD. Migraines. Brain/spinal-cord injury. Sensory processing disorder. Chronic fatigue syndrome. Endocrin problems. POTS. Menopause. Hypothyroidism. Diabetes. Heart Disease. Multiple sclerosis. Mental health disorders.
What should I do if I suspect I have heat intolerance?
Reduce time outside during hot months. Keep your electrolytes up. Drink plenty of water. Stay out of the sun whenever possible if outside. Be aware of the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Clothes that are best worn for heat intolerance. Loose lightweight breathable fabrics. Natural fibers. Long sleeves that protect from sunburn as sunburns will increase your risk. Light clothes that reflect light. Wide brimmed hats that shade the face and neck.
Cool. So what are those symptoms I'm supposed you be looking for?
Headaches. Excessive fatigue. Mood changes. Muscle cramping or weakness. Nausea/ vomiting. Rapid heartbeat. Excessive sweating or not sweating at all.
When should I do to the doctor?
If you suspect you have heat intolerance you can go to your PCP to discuss what medications you may be on and what you can do about it. Otherwise, please go to the emergency room if you have symptoms of heat stroke.
This is good information and all but why are you making this post?
To raise awareness. Not just for the people that have it but weren't aware of what it was called. But for all of the idiots that tried to gaslight me when I was in school because I was like "I don't think this is normal. Every time we do our mile run outside I vomit all over the place but other kids aren't doing that."
Also because people always blame me for over heating if I wear long sleeves or pants. I always like to take notes from what people in the middle east wear because they literally live in the excessive heat and spend long hours in the excessive heat. Often in clothing that covers most of their body. They've gotta know what they're doing, right?
I have some type of xenophobic comment about why people from the middle east cover up
Shut the fuck up 😊

Where my Autistic people with OCD at?!
They don‘t get enough recognition from the media and get forgotten in general (In my opinion).
In honour of disability pride month, we made a disability Pride Knight! Stay proud! ⚔️🌈
Gaza has a large disabled population. Wissam is just one of tens of thousands, who need medication and care, facing the devastating choice of being slaughtered at home or out on the streets. All districts in Gaza but one have been declared combat zones.
I wasn’t going to derail the disability pride month post for people with peanut allergies but in relation to that topic
I have never seen another allergy that has been so viscerally hated and mocked by people working in education like nut allergies. I’ve seen fellow teachers cringe that their classroom was the “nut free” classroom that year. Support staff that are trained and willfully don’t follow cross contamination protocol in the lunchroom because it’s too “tedious” or “time-consuming”. Full preschools + childcare centers that refuse to accommodate nut allergies. Schools where the only free lunch is a PB&J. Before/after school programs and summer programs whose food curriculum has nuts and doesn’t provide an alternative activity.
Allergy discrimination is so so insidious and prevalent. It’s happening behind their back and it is everything from the exposure joke to possibly causing someone to go into anaphylaxis from willful ignorance.
Also other parents in the classroom are guilty too. The “not my child not my problem” brain rot means that those lunchboxes are like bombs for airborne exposure allergies
