Dacey, the she bear

"There's a carving in our gate," said Dacey. "A woman in a bearskin, with a child in one arm suckling at her breast. In her other hand she holds a battleaxe. She's no proper lady, that one, but I always loved her."

Aeron: "Men Fish The Sea, Dig In The Earth, And Die. Women Birth Children In Blood And Pain, And Die.

Aeron: "Men fish the sea, dig in the earth, and die. Women birth children in blood and pain, and die. Night follows day. The winds and tides remain. The islands are as our god made them."

Some scenes for the prompt "Home" for twoweeksoftheon

(The scene with Aeron hit me, when I reread. We often fault Theon for his homecoming, for failing to get to know the people and find allies first. But one of the first things he does on the Iron Islands is in fact ask for advice and information in full humility, from someone he remembers as potentially helpful. Aeron isn't.)

Sometimes someone likes this silly post from ages ago and I remember how much I love this song and this gown.

the oak leaf dress

Hey guys. So. Did you know there is an actual, historical “oak leaf dress” made all of yellow silk? It is in display in the Fashion Museum of Bath, England.

The silk satin dress features over 400 oak leaves, outlined in satin cord and chenille thread. The darker leaves on the skirt were created by actually cutting out oak leaf shapes, and backing the holes with silk net.

It’s fitting, don’t you think? These two need not be mutually exclusive…

My featherbed is deep and soft, and there I’ll lay you down, I’ll dress you all in yellow silk, and on your head a crown. For you shall be my lady love, and I shall be your lord. I’ll always keep you warm and safe, and guard you with my sword. And how she smiled and how she laughed, the maiden of the tree. She spun away and said to him, no featherbed for me. I’ll wear a gown of golden leaves, and bind my hair with grass, But you can be my forest love, and me your forest lass.

Har!

When Tom Sevenstrings sings this song to Arya, she’s wearing the infamous acorn dress (green and brown, bear that in mind) and the dress has just been ripped apart in a ‘fight’ instigated by Arya - an act of refusal to conform with the proper little girl part. Just like in the song, where the maiden of the tree refuses the featherbed (but not the love).

The acorn motif and the green color both symbolize youth and naivite. In the asoiaf universe we come across sayings like “the acorn dreams the oak” (to denote passage of time) and “green as summer grass” (which speaks to a lack of experience).

Yellow/golden is the colour of autumn and maturity. Yellow is to green what the oak (and its leaves) are to the acorn.

“I’ll wear a gown of golden leaves” is a bold statement of maturity and ownership of onesef.

Here is our gown of golden leaves, all in yellow silk:

Certified dietitian and nutritional epidemiologist here: just cut out ultraprocessed food as much as you can and limit the amount of processed foods and you'll be fine.

Regarding wheat:

Bread can be processed (fine in reasonable amounts) or ultraprocessed (definitely not good for you). Dried pasta is minimally processed and very much fine to eat as part of a meal, but some noodles are processed (Asian noodles which contain table salt or alkaline salts) or ultraprocessed (think instant ramen which has been deep fried and instant pasta that's loaded with cosmetic additives). Home made culinary predations that use wheat flour as major ingredient (all kinds of dumplings and fresh pasta and dough for pies) is very much a "healthy carb" (yes even if it's made of white refined flour) as long as the recipe doesn't include other ultraprocessed ingredients (such as margarine, shortening and the like) or sugars/sweeteners. I swear to you that having a diet that relies on minimally processed or processed wheat products for bulk and calories, while also rich in unprocessed foods (lots of vegetables and fruits, small amounts of meat and dairy) is not going to harm anyone unless they actually have cealiac disease.

Personally I think the medical profession should stop asking "what normal God-made nutritious foods that have been staples of the human diet for 5,000+ years do people need to completely cut out of their diet to be healthy" and start asking "how do we fix what's making people's body not tolerate wheat"

If you told me that Rayla would be bound and gagged by pirates (after being tortured in front of Callum, who decked her tormenter square in the nose for it) and lowered into the ocean to be ripped apart by sea monsters, only for a desperate Callum to break free of his own restraints with dark magic, then save her life and connect to the ocean arcanum out of his love for her, I’d say that came from a self-indulgent fanfic I’d never publish and not an actual scene in the show.
