Aussie Here. Its Happening Here, Too. Everything, Especially Essentials, Is Getting A Hell Of A Lot More
Aussie here. It’s happening here, too. Everything, especially essentials, is getting a hell of a lot more expensive. Also, there’s a rental crisis caused by greedy rich people and years of a government that catered only to the wealthy and stripped necessities from the public and gave tax cuts to the rich. People are living in tents under bridges because there’s literally 0 affordable rentals available, and those of us that were lucky enough to get into rentals a few years ago are being extorted by landlords for rent that is $100+ higher per WEEK. I’m a broke uni student, the only way I can afford anything is because of a student rental assistance scheme. What the hell am I gonna do when I graduate? See if the awful job market is looking for people with my skills, despite being legally disabled. Yes, they’re forcing legally severely disabled people under 35 to work, now (they changed it recently). It’s disgusting to watch this great country’s decline because the rich know they can get away with anything and keep taking as much as they want until we have nothing left, and boy, do a great number of us have sweet f all while there are literal empty houses not being rented out to anyone so it drives the housing prices up.
I’m not endorsing violence, but if people riot, I completely understand and support their decision to choose to do so.
“people only *think* the economy is bad because of rising grocery costs!” okay but that’s called food insecurity, and I cannot overstate how big of a deal that is. food prices are, historically speaking, the number one thing that people have rioted about.

Does this count as call of the void?
Humans are born wanderers. Don't tell me you don't wanna veer sharp left off this trail and get lost for 30 days. I fucking know you do, deep down. You love it.

100% agree with this. My mother was so toxic and never recognised me for any achievement as a kid, from getting awards at school to cleaning the house. She just said that’s “what you should do”. What she expected. It felt so invalidating. This and a whole bunch of other reasons is why as an adult I haven’t spoken to my mother in years. This shit is important.

I’m 26 this month and I’m a uni student in a degree that combines all my passions in one. It took me 8 years to figure out what I loved. Had I took the shitty advice people give you at 17/18, I would’ve become a psychologist, which I’m sure I would’ve been good at but I found out it’s not my passion. I would have a degree in something I’d grow loathing for while longing for passions unknown. I wouldn’t have had the time to reflect on my thoughts and actions that led me down this path.
Kids, if it takes you a decade to figure this shit out, then take a decade. 20 isn’t old, and neither is 30. Keep trying things out, of course, keep furthering your life and being productive, but if you don’t have an answer for who you want to be for the rest of your life in your teens, don’t let other people tell you what you should be.
Try out new things until you find something you love, then grind your skills in it until you’re good enough to make money from it or go to uni for it (if you truly want to! A good portfolio can get you very far without uni in a lot of cases! Research what minimum qualifications you need thoroughly, not just the first result on google). Please, don’t be pressured into doing a degree you aren’t excited to do. Yes, the excitement will likely wane after it gets harder, but if it’s truly for you you’ll stick through it.
Self-reflection should be a skill taught in schools, but unfortunately it isn’t, so you’ll need to develop it yourself. It’ll hurt, but you’ll grow so much.
Please don’t rush life, it’s not a super Mario 64 speed run, the only person you’re in competition with is yourself, and don’t expect to be the same level of productive every day, be gentle and patient with yourself. /end rant
I think that when we tell teenagers that their lives will be over if they don't have the most perfect possible trajectory through the education system, that this is, perhaps, if I may be bold, not good for them,
