Hannibal Lecter would only think he was initiating contact with Pinhead.

In reality, Hell has been watching him for a long time.
Hannibal Lecter is not the first cannibal Pinhead has come to collect, but he would surely be one of the most interesting. I imagine Leviathan has been wanting him as a cenobite for a while.
