I'd assume the spring maiden would've been roughly the same age as vernal if she was supposed to a decoy for her (and I'd imagine they'd resemble each other as well for the same reasons). But I also really want to know what the deal between them was, and I love your speculation about it.
okay but this is actually another interesting part of "who the heck was the spring maiden" and where the lack of her name really starts to stand out.
i think we can safely assume that people like qrow and lionheart would have known the spring maiden before she left, right? qrow especially, since he knew amber and fria.
yet, when they see vernal, the presumed spring maiden, there's no reaction from them; no familiarity, no questions on why she changed her name; and in an event that vernal didn't resemble the spring maiden at all, no mention of how the powers have changed host and they're now dealing with a spring maiden they don't know.
so, in my mind, there are two options:
vernal was the perfect decoy and resembled the previous spring maiden so much that no one questioned the name change—or the spring maiden's name was vernal and the vernal we knew decided to add identity theft on top of all the other crimes that come by default with banditry. it wouldn't explain the lack of familiarity, but that could be chalked up to time and place... OR
qrow and lionheart never actually met the spring maiden and simply presumed that vernal must have been her based on what they did know about her... which admittedly doesn't sound like was much, but it also does raise a question where and from whom they got that information from (most likely ozpin, but you never know)
this is why the lack of name and raven never mentioning the time frame starts making things a bit suspicious, because frankly, can we even say that these people are talking about the same spring maiden? there have been many spring maidens over the years, so some identification would be nice!!
for all we know, they're talking about two different spring maidens and we're all just assuming it's one and the same.
and honestly if that's the case then i'll applaud the writers but also it drives me mad.
This suggests publically funded, socialized magical girl agencies, which would amusingly make said magical girls government employees.
Political/social satire where a Republican party analogue is trying to defund magical girl agencies~
Tumblr is really great on days where a bunch of stuff happens. Because it all just melts into this congealed mass of memes, and its completely impossible to tell what the fuck is going on.
Tumblr is the one website that will just tell me shit, and refuse to elaborate in any way that makes sense. Like some kind of unnecessarily cryptic wizard giving dire warnings of worldwide events.
Trying to kill him, sure. Understandable. That's something Qrow's probably willing to shrug off.
In fact I fully believe every member of team strq has tried to kill at least one other team member at some point (because they are both individually and collectively disasters).
But this time Raven's throwing of Qrow under the bus also put Ruby and Yang (and the rest of his kids, but I don't think he's willing to admit that) in danger.
And true to form Qrow seems to care far more about them being put in danger than himself. Hence his statement "you've crossed a line".
Its definitely something they can move past, especially if Raven ends up helping get the kids out of the ever after. But I think the twins are too stubborn to just move past it without outside help.
Outside help most likely taking the form of Taiyang lamenting that he's gonna be babysitting these two idiots for the rest of his life, and Robyn barely resisting the urge to pull out the popcorn and egg them on further.
i find it so funny when people are like "qrow's going to be so mad at raven for trying to kill him the next time they meet" when
qrow wouldn't even know that? he wasn't there when raven claimed she wanted qrow dead, and she certainly did not tell him at haven either
raven didn't even actually want qrow dead. if he was going to be such a big problem for knowing about the spring maiden, raven had plenty of opportunities to get rid of him after higanbana... ya know, like that time he was dying of poison
qrow doesn't exactly have the highest of high horses here; he was planning on attacking the tribe to get the spring maiden, and considering he was trying to recruit huntsmen and huntresses for the task, it didn't exactly sound like they were going to ask nicely—which on its own is pretty damning because based on what they knew, the spring maiden had ran away to get away from them, and here they were, planning to take her back by what sounds like force
the very first thing qrow did when he found out raven was there at haven was to shoot at her, and raven was offended he didn't do it properly.
they're siblings with a very fucked up relationship. i feel like attempted murders at each other are basically water under the bridge by default for them.
Alright it's 5:30 in the morning so I'm gonna make one more post of my thoughts about the teaser then go to bed... and fail to fall asleep because I will still be thinking about it.
So the opening shot of Ruby in the fog room, we see her shake her head slightly suggesting she's talking, also she's seemingly by herself, so either the team doesn't reunite until a ways into the volume or Ruby is separated from the others. Might be some sort of personal trial thing? I've heard in another post that apparently the island reacts to their emotions so maybe this is just what happens when Ruby finally breaks down? it summons this... ominous fog.
The next scene is from the last teaser, and unless we are getting scenes of what's going on back in remnant it will likely be the opening scene of the volume. Not much to say here.
Then the crazy m.c. escher-esque bell tower and butterfly. The view outside the tower windows make it seem like the structure is horizontal, but differentsides don't match up, and the butterfly's movement says vertical. So clearly some trippy shit going on here. Can't quite make out what the pattern is inside the grid at the end of the structure is, but it kinda looks like a raised dias with a set of stairs leading up to it.
The next scene has Ruby holding one of penny's summoned swords. So if they made it down here then its possible her body did too, which... is unpleasant to think about given the general fuckery of this place. Crwby don't do us dirty with some kind of zombie penny please.
Then Ruby looking shocked in the forest with the mouse, I'm guessing this is fairly early on and she's just seen something that's made the otherworldliness of this place land for her.
Followed by a shot of the team on a cliffside overlooking some absoultely bonkers terrain. This could actually be a shot directly following from the last one and this view is what has Ruby shocked. We have the world tree, a hexagon of big glowing mushrooms, some smoking geyser/volcano rock formations, a floating island, some icy peaks and weird columns off in the distance, and oh yeah, fucking candyland apparently. If the terrain responds to their presence then Neo is definitely somewhere in the candy zone. We've also got a red area that reminds me of forever fall and a purpke area that kinda looks like a town covered in shadecloths that are partially hidden by the cliff and trees. So... a lot of ground to cover.
Then we've got a knight with armour seemingly reminiscent of Jaune's standing in flames. Is it jaune? Maybe, he doesn't appear anywhere else in the trailer. Definitely framed like a bad guy though. So either it's someone else or we're getting evil/corrupted jaune this volume.
Then this weird horned masked guy standing in what looks like a tree structure with glowing mushrooms around, some kind of village maybe? Also the figure has some kind of armour, shell, or exoskeleton over sinewy tissue. Not much to work with, but the stance, twitchy movement and the horns do remind me of the god of darkness a bit.
Neo looking feral in the rain and using her semblance on herself, though the scene cuts off before you can tell what illusion she's making. The terrain looks purple and rocky I don't think we've seen that so far in the trailer, so she might be in a very different area.
Someone with a bandage around one leg walking from the beach following another (likely Ruby's) set of footprints. A lot of people are saying Alyx and I'm inclined to agree mostly because they looked quite human, unlike a lot of the stuff we've seen so far, and I don't have any other good guesses except neo in disguise, abd why would she bother disguising herself if no one's there.
Then we get a montage of things asking what. The mouse talks, there's soneone with a crown, a chesire cat creature that said fuck you I'm gonna have my own artstyle, something with three eyes lurking in a pile of leaves, a lady in some kind of metal exosuit, and Ruby standing over someone (or something? We hear a what here too, but she closes a lid, so maybe whoecer spoke did so from a different place than Ruby's eyeline. That or she's locking someone in a trunk, which... normally I would say she wouldn't do, but hey she's under a lot of stress, who knows) off screen with death in her eyes. Too brief to be able to tell much about each of these. Though the exo-suit lady looks to have something to do with jaune/the knight from earlier just because they appear to be in the same place surrounded by fire. If not the person on the beach then this would be my next guess for Alyx, and it turns out she's maybe not gonna be as helpful as we hoped. No Idea why Ruby's so pissed off, but I guess that depends on who/what she's standing over.
Then we get shots of each of team Rwby and the trailer ends.
All in all, I have very few answers here. Team Rwby definitely seems to cover a lot of varied terrains, but whether they're doing so with intent or just searching remains to be seen. Jaune might be having a horrible time this volume as some kind of corrupted enemy, or that could be something completely different and they just decided not to show him in the teaser.
I have no idea, but writing all this down instead of having it rattling around my brain will hopefully help me sleep better.
Okay so I know a lot of people are proposing Summer as the narrator, but that just doesn't sound right to me.
For one, the voice just sounds a little younger than I would've expected summer to sound.
For two, I'm unconvinced they'd reveal summer in a teaser rather than leaving it for a big moment in the show itself.
And three, the actual wording of the narration seems to ve talking about the story of the girl who fell through the world (while obviously drawing a parallel for us, the audience, to Ruby), and who would know that story in the ever after if not Alyx herself.
So yeah, I think the narrator is Alyx not Summer, no I do not have any strong evidence for that claim. It's purely vibes based atm.
I stayed up till 4:30 in the morning for a minute of footage that gave me no answers and only more questions.
And I honestly could not be happier about it.
Could be. My money's on Alyx though.
NARRATOR IS A WOMAN WE HAVEN’T HEARD BEFORE.
Calling it now that this is Summer!
Welp, guess this is the only thing I'm going to think about today.
Now I just have to stay up until... 4:30am.
Lets fuckin go.

LET'S GOOOOOO
Yes I have spent the last 3 hours replaying parts of Ice queendom.
Yes I have watched Ruby take out Roman's goons like 15 times in a row.
No I do not want help.
Leave me here.
I did have a similar joke reaction to this retcon, but then I thought of a funnier explanation.
He's lying.
He just doesn't want to admit he sent in 50 box tops of the stuff to get the hoody he is *currently wearing*

Ice Queendom sucks, I can't believe they ruined Monty's vision like this.
this is satire please don't execute me
Weiss: there's only enough screentime for one cool anime dictator in this dream, and by the gods it will be me.
not team jnpr literally being extras in weiss’s dream world 😭
The actual episodes of Rwby Ice Queendom haven't even started and I'm already unhinged just from the pre-release livestream
It is interesting that when Yang was leaving in volume 4 it never even seemed to be a question between them whether Tai was staying or not. I mean both of his daughters, his ex-wife and his brother-in-law were either in, or heading to anima. From what Oobleck and Port said during their visit the situation in Vale was... not exactly great, but under control. No one would've faulted Tai for going after his family, but he didn't.
And as enjoyable as theories about the relic of choice being hidden under the house and guarded by Tai are, I find it much more moving the idea that he stayed simply to make sure everything was still standing when they got back. That this man who has lost some of the most important people in his life is capable of tamping down on his own overprotectiveness and trust his family to look after each other when he's not there. To stay at home and try and actually improve the situation in Vale while everyone runs off on their big-picture save the world journey.
And it makes sense that its what he'd do, he's been doing the same thing for Qrow for years at this point. He's used to it, no matter how much the worry must eat at him.
Its definitely a trademark xiao long "this is definitely hurting me but its also the thing the people I care about need, so I'm gonna do it anyway" move.
both yang and especially ruby have this thing where they... not quite ignore but definitely shove their own problems aside for the moment to be there for others, even to the point of traveling across continents if so required. it's all about staying by others' side. 'until the end', a ruby song, says it best for ruby; i promise i'll be here until the end.
i can near guarantee they did not get this trait from summer or raven or qrow, all three who have either left and kept their distance; all either confirmed or heavily hinted as a way to protect their family.
no, this is a trait they got from taiyang, the depressed single father who worries about his daughters a lot. the one who stayed, no matter what, doing his best to be there for ruby and yang, even when his emotional state wasn't the greatest.
(and that's something ruby and yang definitely picked up on; those little changes, when his smile turns almost sad at something they said or did, when all the memories come flooding back, a reminder of a time that once was but can never be brought back)
like, tai stayed, so much so that even when everyone else left, he's still home, taking care of everything so that his kids have a home to return to.
to sum it up; the whole "there's no time to deal with our own problems there are others depending on us" is a certified xiao long trait and gods they need therapy.

ITS BEEN 84 YEARS
this anime has the longest game of among us i’ve ever seen

Hey so if we're going with that second version of the myth it's probably worth remembering that Fenrir also eats Odin during ragnarok.
And given all of Ozpin's allusions to Odin...
in norse mythology, there are two wolves—sköll and hati—who chase mani (the moon) and sol (the sun) through the sky in hopes to devour them. at ragnarök, they finally catch their prey. according to one other version of the myth, it is the wolf fenrir who devours the sun.
team strq already has norse mythology allusions (raven and qrow are huginn and muninn), so if grimm!summer is real and intended to be a version of big bad wolf, well...

...those sun and moon are looking incredibly tasty on the background.
i wanna. Strangle Elon Musk.
No one:
Amphibia, The Owl House, and RWBY fans: here's why someone's gonna lose an eye
Hey so, a bit over a week ago i was feeling pretty similar to where you seem to be at now.
I had just skimmed the IPCC report and spent most of that day with the yawning sense of climate doom looming over me.
Not a fun time.
Eventually I managed to distract myself with this and that until it wasn't weighing on me so heavily, but that sense of impending doom didn't really go away.
One of the things that helped get rid of that feeling was this video
To be clear, this is not a video saying, "actually its all good, the whole situation will work itself out."
This is a video that lays out some of the worse case scenarios, and its not good...
But it's not apocalyptic either.
My brain has a habit of coming up with worst-case scenarios, when faced with a question like climate change the scenario I can come up with is human-extinction level bleak.
But this scenario, as the video explains, is actually unlikely.
In a way I found it comforting, to be told what were the worst-case scenarios that were actually likely. They were bad, but not as bad as I thought they'd be.
I don't say this to minimize the issue or your feelings about it. I get it. Against a problem this big its hard not to feel overwhelmed sometimes.
So do what you need to do to feel better, maybe you find the video helpful the same way I did. Maybe you'd prefer to just distract yourself and not think about it for awhile, give a little room so you can stabilize.
Do whatever you need to do.
Just don't give up.
Because climate change is going to be the most important fight we face as a species.
And we haven't lost the fight yet.
I may not be suicidal but I do kinda hope I die before the world becomes completely unlivable y’know
Too add on to the "red eyes symbolize protecting those close to you" part, the two other characters with red eyes are Emerald, who's primary motivation was loyalty to Cinder and tried to protect her on multiple occasions, and Qrow who seems to spend like 50% of his fights trying to keep everyone else alive.
whenever yang's eyes turn red, whenever she uses her semblance due to an emotional outburst, it's always been out of anger or frustration. always to attack someone.
not in worthy, though. she's not angry, or frustrated, nor is she trying to attack neo. it's fear and worry for ruby's life, her goal is to push ruby out of the way of harm, and her semblance activates and her eyes turn red along with it.
and i feel like that's noteworthy, because it's not like yang's semblance gives her more defense, it's purely offensive semblance—if anything, using it just spent more of her aura. so why did it activate in that moment, so unlike any usage of it has been before?
all i can think of is symbolic meaning. eyes are important, and with yang and ruby especially they tie them to their mothers. silver eyes are fueled by desire to protect life, and they do that by targeting grimm. outside of silver eyes, red eyes are only other eye color that has been mentioned in the show—first in reference to grimm, which nicely makes them "opposite" of silver eyes, and second time in reference to raven.
yet yang's eyes turned red by using her semblance in a moment where her sole focus was to protect someone; not by attacking the person threatening them, but by pushing them out of the way. with all this in mind, it's certainly a change from the past, but i can't find it unexpected; raven's semblance seemingly allows her to know when someone she's bonded to is in danger / about to die, and gives her a quick way to protect them.
and i find it neat, that we have two different eye colors, silver and red, one so very anti-grimm and the other grimm-like, yet both symbolize protection in their own way.
Rwby, Amphibia, and The Owl House all canonically have methods of crossing dimensions and have fandoms with some significant overlap...
Just saying.
