The Homunculi are the definition of good character design

Rhys is cool and competent and clearly the smartest of them all, but his relationship with Ava is entirely based on the fact that she trusts him more than the others. She trusts him to keep the others in check and acknowledges he is the most responsible and therefore trustworthy. A romance with him is most unlikely for Ava.

Next is Pierce. Don’t get me wrong, he’s considerate of Ava’s emotional state, and despite his stoic soldier’s demener, clearly cares for her (plus the petting thing is literally the CUTEST shit). He’s the second easiest for Ava to work with, and despite there being potential for Ava to have a relationship with him, the shows does not spend much time on the dynamic between them.

Leaf is originally intolerable in Ava’s eyes, but over time the two have more moments together, learn more about each other, and truly connect. Despite this being a strong basis for a potential relationship, in my opinion, this connection is more of a strong kinship, a growth in understanding that allowed them to see each other better. Their personalities don’t quite clash anymore, but a romance with Leaf is unlikely for Ava.

Noi is a tricky case. He’s somewhat dependable, and much kinder than the others. His naivety can be sweet, if troublesome, and his energy and polite manner is clearly seen by those around him. Both Mrs Oat’s granddaughter and Ava’s pop believe Noi to be the obvious choice, and in my opinion, he would be. However, intentionally or not, Ava often treats Noi as more of an annoyance, trivialising his emotions and growing tired of him more than once. Her attitude towards him is similar to her original attitude towards Lorelei. Therefore, a romance with Noi is fairly implausible.

Finally, Ash. Ash is the character that has probably shown the most growth throughout the series, and though he and Ava do still clash, he’s grown fond of her, clearly showing a genuine attraction for Ava outside of times they all fell a mutual enamerment towards her (like the kiss scene). While there has not been much development in that area of their relationship as far as interactions go, the tone of the show is clearly in favour of a relationship between them. However, right now, ignoring the show clearly picking favourites, I’d say their romance is a tad undecided.
