The effects that no one saw
- After second year, Ginny could no longer stand snakes. Everytime she saw them, all she could think about was how she had woken up in an unfamiliar place, knowing that she had been the one harming everyone, and discovering that the monster had been a basilisk. What if someone had been killed?
- After everything that happened with the Snatchers, Hermione never wore perfume again. She didn't understand how anyone could. They would just lead the enemy right to their own doorsteps! It took her a long time to remember that there was no enemy anymore.
- For the first time ever, Luna hated darkness. She had always loved it before, but after she was held captive in Malfoy Manor, something had changed, and her love of the darkness turned to hatred. She learned how to make glowing balls of pure energy, and in her room, thousands of them floated in the air. It helped to remind her, when she woke up from another nightmare and forgot where she was, that she wasn't in the dungeon anymore.
- In his second year, Harry found that he couldn't look into mirrors anymore. Every time he did, all he thought of was the Mirror of Erised, and whenever he looked at his reflection, he couldn't help but hope that his parents would be looking out at him again. Every time that they weren't there, his heart broke a little more.
- Ron had always been fine with leaving his friends alone. But he was seventeen, and whenever he tried to leave a room that his friends were in, all he felt was the overwhelming panic of them disappearing, leaving him behind even though all he wanted was to join them again.
- "Please let them be okay," Neville whispered to himself whenever he went to sleep. Because after his seventh year, he had grown so used to his friends disappearing in the night, reappearing days later with new injuries and a haunted look in their eyes. He was terrified to close his eyes, because there was always that fear that one day, one of his friends would vanish and would never come back.
- Whenever her children visited her, Molly Weasley was overjoyed. But whenever her family sat down for a meal, that joy soon turned to grief, as Molly realized that once again she had laid a place for a son that would never eat with them again.
- Andromeda Tonks lived in a house that felt far too big for just herself. She was used to laughter filling up the halls and tripping over messes left by a bubbly girl who changed her looks to suit her mood. She was not used to the empty feeling of grief that followed her everywhere she went. A few days a week, her grandson would go to her house to spend time with her, and he was just as bubbly and irrepressible as her daughter had been. She loved him for that, but sometimes, she hated him for it too.
- For five years after the war, George refused to speak, because he could not fathom how he was supposed to say anything when there was no one who would finish his sentences.
- It took years until Draco could allow people to hug him. And even then, it took everything in him not to shudder and recoil, as his mind flashed back to a pair of cold arms embracing him as he chose his family over his friends.
My gf is an actual amab cis girl. They wrote male on her birth certificate by mistake
holy shit tell your girlfriend congrats on the fun gender
A comprehensive compilation of why Severus Snape is an awful person that doesnât deserve redemption, pity, or any kindness ever (not in any particular order):
- He is obsessed with the Marauders when they are younger, and tries to compare their antics to the actions of very real, blood supremacist, dark magic-using bullies that Snape was hanging out with and found amusing. (Edit: Iâm adding that Iâm not saying James and Sirius were right in their actions, Iâm simply pointing that Snape wasnât either. This post isnât about the marauders, this is about Snape)
(DH, The Princeâs Tale, p673-674, Arthur A. Levine Books edition)
ââThey sneak out at night. Thereâs something weird about that Lupin. Where does he keep going?â âHeâs ill,â said Lily. âThey said heâs illââ âEvery month at the full moon?â said Snape. âI know your theory,â said Lily and she sounded cold. âWhy are you so obsessed with them anyway? Why do you care what theyâre doing at night?ââ
- Snape was very clearly trying to out Remus and actively trying to prove his case about knowing Remus was a werewolf. (More on this later)
-Calls Lily a mudblood, and then tries to excuse his actions. Then Lily says â...you call everyone of my birth Mudblood, Severus. Why should I be any different?â Snape says absolutely nothing to defend himself on this statement, so we can only assume that it is accurate and he commonly uses a slur to describe other students around him.
-We know Snape invented Levicorpus, which we later see James use. How do you think James learned it if not because Severus had used it on him or another student before? We even see Snape use Sectumsempra on James. Sectumsempra, aka the spell capable of cutting someone open and leaving them to bleed to death. This is the kind of experimentation Snape did with Dark Magic.
-Snape was willing to sacrifice the life of a BABY without a second thought until he discovered that the child was Lilyâs. Even after this, he prioritizes Lilyâs life and isnât concerned whatsoever about the life of Harry, who at this time is less than a year old.
-If Voldemort had decided that Neville was the Chosen One instead of Harry, Severus Snape would still be a death eater. He didnât think being a Death Eater was wrong in any way- it wasnât until he was directly affected by a childhood crush did he reconsider. James and Lily Potter fought for the light because they believed in the light. Severus Snape fought against the dark because the dark had offended him. Had Voldemort gone after the Longbottoms instead, Snape would have lived and died as the most loyal Death Eater in history. Edit: I understand that we can say âifâ all day long. The point here Iâm trying to make is that Severus Snape is only supporting the light side because it benefits him in this situation. Iâm simply pointing out that heâs selfish by nature.
-The prophecy states that the child will be born to parents that have thrice defied the Dark Lord. So therefore Lily in some way defied Voldemort 3 other times. And only now Snape wants to save her? No. It has more to do with the guilt heâs feeling for telling Voldemort about the prophecy. It wasnât her death that phased him as much as how heâd feel if he caused her death.
-Snape hates Harry simply for the fact that Harry looks like his father. Have you ever considered how Harry wouldâve been treated if heâd been a girl that looked like Lily? Edit: I AM NOT INSINUATING ANYTHING PEDOPHILIC. I am making the point that when Harry come to school, Snape saw him and recognized his childhood bully, and instead of making the mature decision and not making judgments about Harry beforehand, he just assumes that Harry will be like his father was in school. If Harry had looked like Lily, Snape wouldâve been more inclined to favor him the way he did Draco or Pansy. Not in a creepy way, just in a confirmation-bias kind of way.
-Severus snape once intended to publicly kill a studentâs pet as punishment for getting a potion wrong. This pet was also a gift to Neville from his Uncle for getting into Hogwarts- something that his family didnât think would happen because he wasnât âmagic enoughâ. So to him- Trevor is a reminder that he is a wizard and that his family is proud of him. Then Snape wants to kill him because Neville got a potion wrong, reinforcing the idea that Neville isnât âmagic enoughâ.
-When Snape covers for Lupin's class (told you weâd be back here), Snape taught the DADA class and made all the students write essays on how to kill werewolves so that Lupin would have to read these when he came back from going through an incredibly painful time.
-Snape did everything in his power to get Remus fired despite the fact that Remus had spent 16+ years pretty much homeless and without a job.
(OotP, Percy and Padfoot, p302, Arthur A Levine Books edition)
ââI know sheâs a nasty piece of work, thoughâyou should hear Remus talk about her.â âDoes Lupin know her?â asked Harry quickly, remembering Umbridgeâs comments about dangerous half-breeds during her first lesson. âNo,â said Sirius, âbut she drafted up a bit of anti-werewolf legislation two years ago that makes it almost impossible for him to get a job.ââ
Edit: So letâs do some basic math here. This happens in Order of the Phoenix. The anti-werewolf legislation was written two years prior. This wouldâve been during or around The Prisoner of Azkaban. Why would somebody randomly write a piece of legislation like this? Letâs just say that there was a teacher that was outed as a werewolf and people were not happy about it. That would give pretty good reason for someone to write a piece of legislation that would make it hard for a werewolf to get a job. Not just Remus. Every werewolf. Who outed Remus to the wizarding world at large? Severus Snape. So for anyone suggesting that what I wrote below is as good as fanfiction, maybe actually read the books and pay attention to smaller plot lines.
-When Snape tells everyone that Remus is a werewolf, heâs not just telling students or their parents. Heâs telling the wizarding world. Because of this, Dolores Umbridge wrote a law that made it almost impossible for Remus to find a job. So not only did he ruin Remusâs life. He ruined the life of Every. Single. Werewolf. in the UK.
-Neville Longbottomâs greatest fear is Severus Snape. Not the woman who tortured his parents into insanity, not the worst wizard of all time, not even any of his other followers. His TEACHER. And this is at an age where Neville doesnât know everything about Snape and all heâs done. That speaks VOLUMES.
-Condones and takes part in bullying a CHILD when Hermione had enormous teeth EXTENDING PAST HER CHIN growing because of a hex, Snape says, âI see no difference.â After this, Hermione permanently modifies her teeth.
(HBP, Snape Victorious, p160, Arthur A Levine Books edition)
ââI was interested to see your Patronus.â He shut the gates in her face with a loud clang and tapped the chains with his wand again, so that they slithered, clinking, back into place. âI think you were better off with the old one,â said Snape, the malice in his voice unmistakable. âThe new one looks weak.ââ
-Mocks Tonks when her Patronus changed when she fell in love with Remus despite the fact that his changed to match Lilyâs.
-âSnape took the page bearing Lilyâs signature, and her love, and tucked it inside his robes. Then he ripped in two the photograph he was holding, so that he kept the part from which Lily laughed, throwing the portion showing James and Harry back on the floor, under the chest of drawersâŚâ She was laughing at her husband and son. People she loved dearly enough to give up her life and Snape took that and cut them out of it so he could pretend she was laughing for him. Her love in the letter was for Sirius who was the best man at her wedding and her good friend in the order. Snape took that so he could pretend her love was for him. This isnât romantic. Itâs creepy. Snape feels entitled to Lilyâs love even though heâs done nothing to deserve it.
-The ONLY reason Snape protects Harry is that heâs under an obligation to by Dumbledore (who is blackmailing him, so Snape doesnât have a choice). Snape isnât doing it because he wants to. Heâs doing it because if he doesnât, Dumbledore could sell him out to Voldemort and heâd be killed.
-Again, when he kills Dumbledore, itâs not out of the kindness of his heart or his care for Dumbledore. Itâs because heâll be killed or severely punished if he doesnât.
-Snape may have done good things, but it isnât because he wants to. Itâs because he doesnât have a choice.
Essentially, at his roots, Snape is a self-centered blood supremacist who bullies people and only does good things when being threatened and emotionally abuses children because he canât get over somebody he was attracted to in middle school and is perfectly fine killing adults and infants alike when itâs in his best interest.
Iâd like to say that much of this is heavily borrowed or inspired by other writers on this app. I have tagged every user I have access to. However, if you see anything you have written on here or anything please feel free to message me or leave a comment. :)

Do you think that grrm meant Lyanna to parallel with Helen of troy?
With Rhagar being obsessed with prophecy which compelled him to "steal" Lyanna it seems very similar to Paris and Helens relationship, especially with the starting of a war and Robert ( who in this case is both Agamemnon and Menelaus- with cersie killing him and all)
it does not align perfectly but with Sansa's own connection with the whole little finger pomegranate = underworld thing it creates a very interesting contrast as both Pesephone and Helen are considered the daughters of Zeus.
I am sorry if this does not make much sense english is my second language and I very much enjoy your metas!
Hi anon!
(Please don't apologize, and thank you so much!)
I do think that GRRM is very intentionally creating literary and mythological and biblical parallels all over the the book series, and some are more overt than others. It's all about storytelling as a larger theme within the series, as history, romanticized legends, fiction, even outright lies.
Lyanna as Helen is certainly one such allusion, and it works beautifully with how romanticized the story is on all sides - obfuscating the much rougher, political truth beneath.
Other allusions include Agamemnon and Iphigenia in various father daughter relationships, chiefly Stannis and Shireen (but also Ned and Sansa). Or Persephone and Hades, as you mention. Sansa and Littlefinger create an obvious reference to the concept of a stolen daughter, while Catelyn/Lady Stoneheart and Arya reflect other aspects of the story, the maternal figure turned wrathful, the daughter who must return from the underworld to give her peace. The connection to the seasons obviously suggests that there may be an even larger reference at play to the Long Night, some forgotten tale of theft and grief and wrath.
GRRM has also directly referenced his admiration for the confrontation between Hector and Achilles, to illustrate his "the villain is the hero of the other side" approach to conflict.
Basically, when in doubt it's not unlikely that a recognizable parallel is intentional. It may just be a passing nod to similar themes, as opposed to a blueprint for an exact copy of the plot, but in many cases he seems to want us to keep these ancient stories in mind.
